Fourth graders find inspiration from hockey players Fourth-grade students at Edison Elementary School in the Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda school district recently found inspiration from members of the Canisius College men’s hockey team. Four Golden Griffins visited the school on Dec. 10 and worked with the students on drills and gave them pointers on developing their hockey skills. Their visit focused on much more than athletics, though, with the players engaging the students as role models on

topics such as teamwork and dedication to academics and athletics alike. “Our students were able to connect with the players on a personal level by asking them questions about their playing history, family life and college career choices and goals,” said Edison Elementary physical education teacher Nicole Zugelder. “The Canisius players took the time to explain to the students how much hard work, practice and dedication goes into playing sports and studying

in college.” Visiting the school from Canisius College were junior Ralph Cuddemi, freshman Jeff Murray, senior Braeden Rigney and junior Chris Rumble. It was all part of Edison Elementary School’s focus on wellness, which will culminate with the Winter Wellness Sports Day on Jan. 30 and the Wellness Night on March 25.

The kindergarten classes of St. John the Baptist School in Kenmore found the perfect way by making their own gingerbread homes, in the longstanding German tradition. Although gingerbread has been around formore than 1,000 years, it wasn’t until the Victorian Era when German Europeans began elaborately decorating gingerbread structures for fall festivals and Christmas. Over the years, the custom was eventually brought to the United States where its popularity soared. Running to remember a fallen hero By Kaitlin Urban

NT SUN CORRESPONDENT

Marine LCpl Christopher Shank proudly completed the Marine Corps Marathon for the first time, while his wife, Kristie cheered him on. “The overall atmosphere was pretty amazing,” said Kristie. “At the end, there were Marines cheering everyone on.” This is what motivated the couple to participate in next year’s marathon together. “Being at the marathon has motivated me to get into running because I had never ran before that,” said Kristie. “It was super motivating.” In addition to the atmosphere, Chris and Kristie

both noticed there were many runners wearing shirts representing a fallen hero. This was when they decided to run next year in honor of their fallen North Tonawanda High School former classmate, LCpl Timothy Serwinowski. “There are close to 30,000 people running it every year,” said Chris. “During the run, there’s a stretch of names of the fallen and that’s where I got the idea to do it for Tim.” Serwinowski paid the ultimate sacrifice in Afghanistan in June 2010. The loss affected many residents, including the Shanks. They’re encouraging others to join them on their journey toward the 26.2 mile race. While Chris has been an avid runner for some time, Kristie has

just begun her training and says it’s not too late for others to start too. The marathon will be held on Oct. 25 in Washington D.C. The Shanks are hoping to get a group together to make the trip and participate in honor of Serwinowski. Chris and Kristie have created a Facebook page for their cause and welcome anyone interested to join. Anyone is able to participate in the marathon. Active and reserve military members can register on Feb. 23. Others can sign up on March 13 and names will be randomly selected by March 25. There is also a 10k that participants can sign up for on May 20. For those who don’t enjoy running, the Shanks are still encouraging friends to

come along. “We really want to encourage people who don’t want to run just to go for the weekend,” said Kristie. “We kind of wanted to make it a weekend of remembering Tim.” The Facebook page created for the event is titled “26.2 for Tim”. Kristie and Chris have already been posting training tips and encouraging members of the group. Kristie most recently posted that marathon runners should begin their training six months in advance. Before then, they should be running three to four times per week. For more information on the marathon, please visit www.marinemarathon. com.

Local sports Ken West upends Sweet Home in Ken-Ton Classic By Dave Ricci SPORTS REPORTER

It was a tale of two basketball teams that have more in common than they probably even realize. Mark Taylor went 2 of 2 from the line with 32.3 seconds left in the game to help Kenmore West secure a 56-55 win over Sweet Home in the opening game of the Ken-Ton Holiday Classic that was held at Kenmore East Dec. 26-27. The win vaulted the Blue Devils into the title game against Cardinal O’Hara, but more importantly, it proved to be huge confidence booster for a talented team that has not found its rhythm as a group. “We needed this. We needed this one,” said Ken West coach Mike Meetze. “I said to them, ‘I think two weeks ago we lose this game.’ Down the stretch, we didn’t play with a lot of composure. We

played young, we had two first-year point guards on varsity. We threw the ball away a couple times, but we hit big free throws. We did enough with the ball down the stretch in the last minute and got some pretty good communication in the last play to get a 15foot runner off the glass.” Jordan Heine, who led all scorers with 18 points, set the stage for the Panthers last-gasp attempt at the hoop when he sank a bucket with 20 seconds left. Sweet Home got one final look at the basketball, as Meetze alluded to, but the Blue Devils’ defense was able to bat away the attempted buzzer beater to hang on for their second win of the year. Almost mirror images of each other, the Panthers and Blue Devils both have very athletic, skilled players. But both teams entered the Ken-Ton Classic still searching for a way to bring all of the pieces of the puzzle together. Tied 10-10 after the first quarter, the Blue Devils began to turn the tide in their favor when Trent White (13 points) hit a two-pointer and Jon Lo-

renzo went a perfect 4 of 4 from the line. Ken West took a 28-22 lead into halftime. The combination of Heine, Jordan Evert (16) and Brandon Smiley kept Sweet Home in the game and pulled it within one point, 54-53, just prior to Mark Taylor’s winning free throws. “They were huge. Huge,” Meetze said of Taylor’s frees. “He struggled early on in the game, he had six turnovers in the first three quarters, for him to come back and play with that composure down the stretch is a credit to him.” For Panthers coach Scott Martin, it was back to the drawing board to see what they could do to get better results in the weeks and months ahead. “Right now we’re clearly a work in progress,” said Martin. “We have a lot of very good athletes, kind of similar to Ken West. We just don’t have that one (pure) basketball kid to kind of get us over the top.” The Blue Devils would fall to O’Hara, 55-52, in the title game while Sweet Home beat Kenmore East in the third place game.

Local sports Haeick’s accountability an asset for Ken East hoops By Dave Ricci SPORTS REPORTER

Justin Haeick sat on the bleachers inside the gym at Kenmore East. The Bulldogs had just been handed a 72-58 loss by Cardinal O’Hara in the first round of the Ken-Ton Holiday Classic on Dec. 26. While the loss was obviously upsetting, for Haeick, what was far more bothersome was the fact that in his heart, he knew he didn’t have his best game. Through a quiet, measured tone, Haeick admitted that he let the team down by not being at his best. That accountability, even more than the numbers he usually puts up, is a prime example of Haeick’s value to the Bulldogs this season. Though the ‘Dogs have stumbled out of the gates with a 1-5 start, Haeick has been one of the team’s most consistent producers as he has hit double digits in four of the ‘Dogs six games and notched doubledoubles twice. “He holds his ground. He’s strong,” said Bulldogs coach Jay Robbins. “He’s been one of our most consistent guys.” Haeick has indeed been the model of consistency for Ken East this season. He had 10 points and 10 rebounds in an opening-night win over Orchard Park, 11 points and eight boards against Niagara Falls and a huge game of 26 points and 10 rebounds against Lewiston-Porter. “I love coming off a game with a double-double,” Haeick said. “It makes me more motivated for the next game.”

DAN HICKLING

Justin Haeick has recorded two double-doubles and has hit double digs in scoring in four of the Bulldogs’ six games this season. Though his numbers have been good, the best thing Haeick has brought to the floor in his third season of varsity is accountability and hard work. He doesn’t make excuses after a bad game. He shoulders the blame for what he did wrong and does his best to learn from it and move forward. “I’ve got to show up to prac-

tice and work hard every single day,” said Haeick. “That’s the only way I’m gonna get better, keep being consistent. I don’t want one of these games. Six points isn’t good enough for me. If I produced (against O’Hara), we probably would have had the win.” Haeick, angry with his turnovers and fact he only

had six points against O’Hara, rebounded with 11 points and a better all-around game the next night against Sweet Home. “He’s a hard worker. He’s a good kid and he’s gonna try hard and he’s give you everything he’s got,”said Robbins. “That’s really all you ever ask for when you’re a coach.” Beyond the hard work,

Haeick is a great example of the phrase ‘don’t judge a book by its cover.’ Haeick is the first to admit that he isn’t the fastest guy on the court and that he won’t be the star of a highlight-reel slam dunk. He knows what his strengths are and makes the most of them. His raw, natural strength and willingness to get his nose

dirty have been the catalyst for Haeick scoring so many points inside off of rebounds. “A lay-up is worth the same amount as a dunk,” Haeick said. “You get those points. They’re worth the same.” Most of all, Haeick just wants to work hard everyday and set a good example for everyone.
