Check out the Garden Railway Exhibit By Amy Robb

LANCASTER SUN CORRESPONDENT

The Western New York Railway Society will be presenting the Garden Railway Exhibit until Jan. 4 at the Botanical Gardens. Charles Bartel, president of the railway society, said the club has had a partnership with the gardens for quite some time. “We’ve been doing this for nine to 10 years now, each year it has grown.” The exhibit consists of five themes: Buffalo Botanical Gardens, Western Town, Winter Wonderland, Thomas the Train, and Harry Potter. Each themed zone will have detailed miniatures to bring the land to life as you walk through, with members dedicated to make the experience enjoyable on multiple levels. The entire exhibit will have 150 feet of total

track, with three trains and a trolley. The Harry Potter level has a Hogwarts Express with electric motor, scaled mountains like the ones Harry

sees from the train window on his way to school, Kings Crossing Station, Hogwarts Station, and a Quittitch field. “If you look real close

you’ll see Harry going through the wall with his trolley…there are molded figures on wires over the Quittich field. One member made a miniature replica

of his house and put letters inside and owls perched everywhere,” remarked Bartel. It’s amazing to think the society members started in September, especially when considering the level of detail going into each section. With the November storm hitting right when the exhibit was supposed to be set up, coordinators for the event were worried. The five sec-

tions were ready for viewing in just four days – a task that usually requires at least a week, according to Bartel. In addition to a limited amount of time to set up, there was damage to the Botanical Gardens to deal with too.

Twin Village Music: Walter Deinzer retires Effective Jan. 1, Walter Deinzer has retired from Twin Village Music, located at 44 Central Ave., in Lancaster. Prior to his arrival in Buffalo, Deinzer held a variety of positions including executive director of the Killington VT Music Festival and IT coordinator for the Vermont State Colleges System. After early retirement from the Vermont State Colleges System, he enrolled in the Band Instrument Repair Program at Renton Technical College in Washington State. Upon graduation from Renton, he was appointed as woodwind repair technician at Twin Village Music. He has held this position for the last five years and was responsible for repairs of flutes, clarinets, saxophones, oboes, and bassoons. While in Western New York, Deinzer performed with the Boston Town Band and Amherst Chamber Ensembles, and continued with advanced studies on the oboe and English horn with Anna Mattix of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. Deinzer was instrumental in organizing and hosting National Association of Professional Band Instrument Repair Technicians (NAPBIRT) clinics at Lancaster High School for the last two years. Several dozen members of the NAPBIRT traveled to Lancaster from across New York State, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Ontario to learn advance repair techniques from guest clinicians. Upon retirement Deinzer and his wife, Michele, will be making their new home in Phoenix, Ariz.

“Greenhouse 5 took the worst hit, which we were supposed to be in,” said Bartel, recounting when they got the news. Fortunately, the gardens have been working with the railway society to make sure the greenhouse is fully enclosed to preserve the plant life and delicate model trains. The society’s mission is to “promote and encourage the enjoyment of garden railroading through friendship, family education, public involvement

in building and operating model train layouts,” according to the club’s official mission statement. Bartel, a member of the society, believes the exhibit upholds the goals of the club, while being up to date on pop culture and family fun. The society currently boasts 36 members, but they’re always looking for more train enthusiasts. There are a lot of families in the society, often started by going to events like the one currently at the Botanical

Gardens. “You watch the young ones chase the trains around the tracks. One side to the other chasing the trains, and there’s a joy to that…it just can’t be described,” said Bartel. For more information on the exhibit or on the railway society, visit wnygrs. com. The Botanical Gardens is located at 2655 South Park Ave., in Buffalo. The exhibit only runs for two more days from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The nicotine levels in eliquids can vary with the majority at between 1.8 percent and 2.4 percent. At this level of concentration, it will cause sickness in a child, but rarely death. However higher concentrations, such as 7.2 percent or 10 percent, are widely available on the Internet. As quoted in a New York Times article “Selling a Poison by the Barrel: Liquid Nicotine for E-Cigarettes” (Matt Richtel, March 23, 2014) “A lethal dose at such levels would take ‘less than a tablespoon,’” according to Dr. Lee Cantrell, director of the San Diego division of the California Poison Control System and a professor of pharmacy at the University of California, San Francisco. “Not just a kid. One tablespoon could kill an adult,” he said. Many of the accidental poisonings that have been reported in the United States have been traced to the problem of adults being unaware of the risks of having these liquids near children and being careless with control of the vials of liquid nicotine. Tragically, the death in Fort Plain, New York of a one-year old just two weeks ago has been attributed to the ingestion of liquid nicotine.” In addition, unlike nicotine gums and patches, ecigarettes and their ingredients are not regulated by the Food and Drug Admin-

Police Blotter W W W. C P O W N Y . C O M

Petit Larceny At 3:36 p.m., Dec. 19, the complainant, who is a loss prevention associate at Walmart, 4975 Transit Road, reported she observed the offender, Christopher M. Gawel, 34, of West Seneca, select two televisions and speakers from the store shelves and place the items in his shopping cart. Gale then proceeded to the northern store exit and pushed the cart out of the doors past all points of purchase. Gawel was confronted by the complainant and escorted to the loss prevention office. Gawel was taken into custody and transported to the station. He was charged with petit larceny. After being booked, Gawel was turned over to the West Seneca Police Department on a bench warrant. The total of items attempted to be stolen was listed at $695.99.

DWAI by Drugs At 10:47 a.m., Dec. 20, patrol observed a vehicle traveling east on Broadway near Aurora Street cross over into oncoming traffic, nearly striking several vehicles. The vehicle then continued to drive east on Broadway in the center turning lane. Patrol initiated a traffic stop and the vehicle stopped. During a conversation with the operator, Casey R. Lipps, 22, of North Tonawanda, glassy eyes, impaired speech, impaired motor coordination, and the odors of an alcoholic beverage and marijuana were all apparent. Lipps stated he thought he was in North Tonawanda and was going home from a friend’s house in Williamsville. After the performance and failure of several field sobriety tests and a PBT screen of .09 percent BAC, Lipps was arrested for unlawful possession of marijuana, operating a motor vehicle without inspection certificate, criminal possession of a controlled substance, controlled substance in non original container, driving to left of pavement markings, illegally driving in center lane, and DWAI combined influence or drugs or alcohol/drugs. During a search of the vehicle, patrol recovered a bag of marijuana from a backpack on the front seat and half of a hydrocodone pill from the floorboard.

Petit Larceny At 3:19 p.m., Dec. 20, patrols responded to Kohl’s Department Store, 4835 Transit Road, for a male shoplifter still in the store. Upon arrival, the complainant, who is a Kohl’s loss prevention officer, had the offender, Ryan G. Kuehlwind, 21, of Lancaster, in custody. Kuehlwind concealed a necklace, socks, headphones, sweatpants, and a candle, totaling $153.98, beneath his clothing and left the store without purchasing the items. Kuehlwind was charged with petit larceny. He was transported to the station and released on his own recognizance.

Unlawful Possession of Marijuana At 2:21 a.m., Dec. 21, patrol observed a 2003 Honda parked on the east side of the Motel Six building near the entrance lobby. Patrol walked past the vehicle to go inside the motel lobby and noted the strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. Patrol made contact with the passenger and questioned her concerning the possession of marijuana. The passenger stated she had just been picked up and did not know if there was marijuana in the vehicle, but she acknowledged the odor. Patrol next made contact with the offender, Christian O. Colon, 23,of Buffalo, who had exited the lobby. After a brief conversation, Colon admitted to having marijuana in the vehicle and handed patrol a clear plastic sandwich bag containing marijuana. Colon was issued an appearance ticket for unlawful possession of marijuana and released at the scene.

Suspended Registration At 12:30 p.m., Dec. 21, patrol was traveling north on Transit Road, near Genesee Street. The mobile plate reader alerted to a vehicle, which was traveling south on Transit Road, indicating that the registration was suspended. The DMV indicated the registration was suspended on Sept. 29, for an insurance lapse. The registration had also expired on Dec. 11. Patrol initiated a traffic stop and identified the driver as Ronald J. Peglow, 63, of Clarence. The DMV indicated there was “no insurance code on file.” Peglow had no proof of insurance for the vehicle. In addition, Peglow’s New York State driver’s license was revoked on Jan. 26, 2011 for a DWI. Peglow also has a suspension on his driver’s license on Oct. 29, for an insurance lapse. Peglow was issued tickets for operation of a motor vehicle with registration suspended, operation of an unregistered motor vehicle on highway, aggravated unlicensed operation, and operating of a motor vehicle without insurance. Peglow was released at the scene.

Petit Larceny At 9:25 p.m., Dec. 21, patrols were dispatched to Walmart, 4975 Transit Road, for one shoplifter in custody and one shoplifter still in the store. Patrols were notified when the second shoplifter was leaving the store. The offender was stopped outside of Walmart without incident and placed under arrest. The complainants observed the parties for approximately an hour in the store. Both parties were involved in taking items and trying to conceal them without paying for them. The offenders Kimberly A. Zymowski, 40, of Cheektowaga, and Samantha L. Zymowski, 22, of Cheektowaga, were arrested and transported to the station. They were charged with petit larceny and released on $100 bail each.

‘Stony Brook Shines for Others’ keeps on giving By Sallie Moppert

LANCASTER SUN CORRESPONDENT

The residents of the Stony Brook Subdivision in Lancaster truly get into the holiday spirit. And with the holiday spirit comes the spirit of giving to others. The Stony Brook Shines for Others event returned for its 7th year and raises money for local charities while spreading holiday cheer through decorations across eight streets. Event creator Jennifer Chomen explained that this charity event came out of a time when things in Buffalo weren’t the best. “It all began while I was walking down the street after the October storm,” Chomen said. “Everything was a mess and I was feeling sad, only to realize that the trees happened to survive for the most part. I saw all of the kids playing and enjoying themselves and thought that we have to do something to connect the two ideas, trees and

There’s still time to check out all the lights throughout Stony Brook. kids, while helping others.” The trees across the eight streets of the Stony Brook Subdivision are decorated and lit up from Thanksgiving and stay up until the new year. The neighbors also collect money throughout this time, which is then donated to a local charity. This year’s charity was The Kevin Guest House of Buffalo.

Inside Sales Representatives As the Community Papers of WNY’s family of products and distribution area continues to grow, our company has an immediate need for several part-time inside sales representatives in our Special Promotions Department. If your friends describe you as outgoing, relational, organized and energetic, we want to talk to you about joining our Special Promotions team. We will provide the training and the tools you need to succeed, along with the recognition you deserve when you reach your goals.

The charity received the money during a check presentation ceremony held Thursday, Dec. 18. Attendees watched as Santa Claus arrived on a fire truck and then the neighborhood pre-

sented the check of the money raised to the charity. After the ceremony, everyone joined together to enjoy the lights and decorations, along with hot chocolate and snacks.

Last year, the event took its mission to heart to rally behind a neighbor in need that was treated at Women and Children’s PICU after a serious accident. The community came together and raised more than $14,000 for Women and Children’s PICU. This year, the Stony Brook Shines participants raised more than $8,300 for The Kevin Guest House. “The most amazing and exciting part for me is seeing the look on the faces of those who we are raising money for. They typically have no idea of the amount of money raised and are shocked about how much a little neighborhood can do in such a short amount of time.” Chomen added. In fact, the success of the Stony Brook Shines for Others has spread throughout Western New York. A woman in Tonawanda,

Happy Holidays

who had stopped by Stony Brook to see a friend, saw the event and then brought the idea back to her neighborhood. The Moore Avenue Shines event takes place in Tonawanda and the money it raises is added to what is raised at Stony Brook Shines. “It is so nice to see that people are lighting the neighborhoods but also donating, as that is what it is truly all about.” Chomen said. Donations for Stony Brook Shines can be given through the event’s website or by giving donations in the two specially designated mailboxes, one at 54 Stony Brook and the other on Kelly Ann. To donate or for more information, visit www.stonybrookshines.com.

BPC Animal Shelter has been helping pets find homes since 2009 this article are Fluff, 8 years old, and Dahlia, 3 years old, looking to be adopted together. “ F l u ff ’s o w n e r d i e d nearly two years ago, and Dahlia was pulled from a kill shelter where she lived for about two years. They love each other so we would want to see them finally in their forever home, together,” said Galvin. Since Fluff and Dahlia are sponsored, their adoption fee would be $0. Those interested can call Dawn at 308-0101, although she would prefer a text message inquiry. Visit bpcanimalrescue. com for a full listing of animals in need of a good home or to get more information on what the shelter does for the area. Please be advised: adoptions and surrenders are available seven days a week by appointment only, since the shelter would need to coordinate with the foster families prior to a visit. Online forms for adoption are necessary before viewing any of BPC’s animals.

LANCASTER SUN CORRESPONDENT

Buffalo Paws and Claws (BPC) Animal Shelter is a non-profit based out of East Aurora, with cats at PetCo on Niagara Falls Boulevard in Amherst and foster homes throughout Western New York. The organization has been working to find pets their forever home since 2009, with a “no kill” policy, meaning they will not perform euthanasia on any of their animals. Taking in unwanted or surrendered pets, those that have been neglected or abused, it’s easy to see why these animals need a foster family. It’s hard to find homes for misunderstood pets with a history of abuse, so the foster home serves as a halfway home to introduce them to how domestic life should be, with a nurturing family. President and Founder Kristy Cordova, as well as Vice President Dawn Galvin, have adopted out 2,313 animals since March 2, 2009, and

She wanted them to be more comfortable while awaiting a forever home,” said Galvin, of the shelter ’s founder. Galvin joined BPC six

months after Cordova founded it, and has been a part of it ever since. Galvin used to foster for Erie County SPCA, but after they refused to treat the kittens she fostered, she decided she could no longer work with them. Through work at BPC, Galvin has seen a lot of success stories, but one

Jacobs and Judge Martoche were classmates while attending UB Law School. This is Jacobs’ second

term, as he was first elected to the county wide post in November of 2011. Jacobs was re-elected this November with 67 percent of the votes cast. In his remarks Jacobs thanked his employees at the clerk’s office, “I want you, my staff, to know that your hard work, professionalism and the courtesy in which you deal with our citizens is very much appreciated,” stated Jacobs. Since taking office, Jacobs has solved the major crisis in the clerk’s real estate division where he dis-

covered millions of dollars of uncashed checks and more than 100,000 unreturned mortgages. Over the last two years, Jacobs has recorded a $4 million surplus while introducing new technologies to the auto bureaus, such as an online reservation system. Jacobs has also become known for his success with the Erie County “ThankA-Vet” Program, the largest of its kind in New York State, which now has more than 1,000 area businesses offering discounts to Erie County veterans.

though, it was Lancaster that needed some assistance when top-ranked Orchard Park upped its record to 4-1 and dropped the Redskins to 2-3 with a 3-0 thrashing at Leisure Rinks in West Seneca on Friday, Dec. 26. “Up until this game the boys had been playing some really good hockey,” Lancaster

skipper Kevin Miller said, “but it seems like they took the holiday one extra day, you know.” It didn’t take long for that show, either, because the Quakers netted their first two goals in the first two and half minutes of the contest—the initial one in the blink of an eye from Mitchell Streety at the blue line just 22 seconds into the contest. Without much time to recover, Zach Weimer put another one past Lancaster keeper Sean Lenhard, while OP’s Tom Held made his 11 first period saves look easy. “We’re a skating team … and if you come out quick, it’s kind of tough to play against a team when you’re skating,” Quaker coach Derek Gilham said. “Obviously it puts a team on their heels pretty fast.” “It’s tough to give up a goal on the opening shift,” Miller added, “but it’s really just a credit to OP because they’re putting the puck in the net more than any other team. Good teams find a way, and they certainly did, but it was just an off day for us—and, like I said, I think the boys had too much food over the holidays and it showed.” The Quakers, on the other hand, showed that they were still hungry for more victories when Tyler Bienias netted the final goal of the night with 6:06 left in the second frame against the 5-foot-8, 190-pound Lenhard, who had a decent 1.50 goals against average coming in.

Depew drops its hoops tourney to neighboring St. Mary’s Lancers scoreless until about the two-minute mark in the first quarter. The momentum shifted from there, though, and Depew was held to no point in the second and only three in the third. “We just had such an emotional win against Lancaster, so we came out a little flat tonight,” explained Concannon, whose Lancers topped the Redskins 61-56 two days prior in the tourney opener, “but our coaches tuned us up at halftime and we came out running in the second half.” That turned into a 21-point third quarter for St. Mary’s, which only got three in that frame from Molson, the eventual tournament MVP. “We put a little token pressure on the kid,” Wildcat skipper Larry Jones explained. “We just wanted to make them have to slow down and think. If they just get into the flow and play the game, they’re going to hurt you because they have good athletes that know how to play.”

The Depew High boys basketball team was bound and determined to do two things on Monday, Dec. 22. One was to stop St. Mary’s junior Takal Molson. If they did that, they would certainly accomplish the other, which was to win the title game of their Wildcat Tournament. It didn’t quite work out that way, though, because while Depew held Molson to just one bucket and six free throws, senior Jake Concannon stepped up his game and led the Lancers to a 52-39 victory over their local rival. “It’s huge because we love coming here with Lancaster and Depew and beating our rivals around town,” said Concannon, who ended the night with a team-high 13 points, “but you gotta give them credit because they absolutely came out here thinking that they were just as good as us and they gave us a fight.” That was apparent in the early going when Depew rushed out to a 10-0 lead, holding St. Mary’s

Strong second-half D helps Lady Lancers rebound against Lancaster By William ‘Ski’ Wilczewski SPORTS REPORTER

The St. Mary’s Lady Lancers came out of the gate slow on Saturday, Dec. 27, and were lucky to be down just 28-21 to Lancaster at halftime in round one of Depew’s inaugural Wildcat girls basketball tournament. Limiting the Lady Redskins to just one third quarter bucket and a dozen second half points, though, was just what the doctor ordered in their 44-40 victory over their crosstown rival. “Giving up just 12 in the second half was big for us,” St. Mary’s skipper Keith Junik said, “and that’s what we’ll try to be all year. We’re not going to score 60-70 points, so we’ve got to lock people down. The 28 in the first half was tough, but locking them down in the second really helped us.” Annie Hamilton’s game-high 13 points didn’t hurt, either.

The junior guard sank a half dozen free throws, a pair of field goals and one three-pointer on the night. “We really wanted it for our school, and we knew we really had to pick it up after the first half, so that’s what we did,” she said. “We didn’t come ready to play. We came kind of sleepy and everything, but we really picked it up in the second half. We just needed more help defense and being more ball strong.” Ball strong, however, was exactly what Lancaster was in the early going when they had a double-digit lead in a second quarter that saw them sink 16 points, including a pair of three-pointers from freshman Hannah Wozniak, who ended with eight on the night. At that point, the Lady Redskins clearly had the momentum but just couldn’t hang onto it. “We’re young, and I feel like when we have that momentum and those leads, we don’t know when to use the clock or manage the game the right way,”

WILLIAM ‘SKI’ WILCZEWSKI

St. Mary’s junior Annie Hamilton (11) passes the ball to a teammate, while Lancaster’s Kara Paradowski (10) defends her on Saturday, Dec. 27. St. Mary’s beat Lancaster 44-40 in round one of the inaugural Wildcat girls basketball tournament. Lancaster head coach Marisa Gallo said. “I think that’s one of our biggest problems; we don’t know when to use the entire 30 seconds and slow ourselves down—but that will come with age, hopefully, and experience. “We can’t let down,” she

added, “because we’re not the type of team that’s going to be able to come back from any team and be able to persevere every game that way from behind. We had the momentum, but it was the little things. It was boxing out; it was silly passes and that killed us.”

Lancaster’s Kelly Fellner did her best to keep her squad in the game with a team-high 11 points, but with St. Mary’s’ Hannah Pufpaff netting eight and Kaitlyn Kowalewski sinking nine, it was just too much to handle. “You can see she was a little sluggish; still nervous,” Junik said of Kowalewski, who was in her third game back after an ankle injury, “but it’s a huge deal to have her back, just for our stability. With her back we’re really starting to gel, plus we know we’ve got someone else to turn to when somebody’s a little off—at least with our bigs.” And those were the girls Lancaster tried to stay away from late in the game when they were down by four and created a three-point play during a timeout for sophomore Kara Paradowski. The shot didn’t go down but “no screens were set,” Gallo explained, “so it wasn’t executed. We need to learn how to execute when we’re drawing something

up—and again, that will come with experience. “We also missed a lot of shots tonight,” she added. “We missed a lot of easy layups that we had and some free throws. Defensively, we’re right up there with any team that we play, but offensively we need to catch up. We need to learn to score consistently. Today was little things we can fix, but it was still hard because we should have had it.” Because they didn’t, the Lady Redskins dropped to 2-5, while the Lady Lancers moved to 6-4. Still, Junik knows his club has plenty of work to do before they get into league play come the New Year. For the time being, though, he was happy with the progress he was seeing. “We’re young and we’re very inexperienced, but now you can see a change,” he said. “They don’t put their heads down and cry now when things don’t go right. They get mad and then figure out a way to pick it up, so that was nice to see. That’s what we were happy about tonight.”

Lancaster Force travel hoops takes Michel 22-2 on the Aaron Graves Memorial Tourney mat so far this season “Milestone” from page 5

The Lancaster Force travel basketball team won the 14-and-under Aaron Graves Memorial Basketball Tournament Dec. 26 at Gloria Parks. The team is coached by Peter Jerebko. Front row, left to right: Jakob Jerebko and Jackson Wurtz. Back row: Will Carlone, Brandon Dunz, Andrew Hartnett, Gian Luca Fulciniti, Cameron Sionko and Jack Putney.

“So Tommy’s chasing him down,” Redskin head coach Ron Lorenz said. “He can do it; probably will, too.” Toward that goal, Michel added four more wins after the Penfield Tournament to edge even closer—something that was no surprise to Lorenz, who simply describes one of his top matmen “as a tough buck” that was 22-2 as of Dec. 23, “so he’s going to have 30 wins this year, I would say, give or take.” He’s not one to count his eggs before their hatched, but Lorenz also figures Michel will do the same next season, if not better, putting him around the 150-win range, “which is pretty astonishing for a high school kid,” Lorenz said. Those numbers, though, don’t mean a whole lot to Michel, who only has one real goal. “I want to go to states this season,” the youngster said, adding that one sixth-place and two fifth-place finishes at sectionals have been his best so far. To increase his chances this

season, though, the Michel plans to drop to 101 pounds by then; a move that Lorenz is comfortable with. “He’s gonna do it this year,” the skipper said. “He’s wrestling a lot better.” And Lorenz should know having coached Michel—who began his varsity career in the seventh-grade—since the youngster first took up the sport as a 5-year-old in the local kids club program. “That’s one of the most satisfying things about coaching,” Lorenz said. “They’re like your kids. You watch them grow up and reach all these levels in the sport, so it’s pretty satisfying.” What’s next? The Redskins were slated to participate at the Spencerport Tournament Dec. 29-30 after early holiday deadlines. They are also slated to do battle in the NCCC Tournament Jan. 2-3 before hosting matches in Lancaster at 6 p.m. on Jan. 7 (Sweet Home), Jan. 9 (Frontier) and Jan. 14 (Orchard Park).

Held stopped 33 Biersbach scores game-high 14 points shots in shutout bid “Hoops” from page 5

“Puck” from page 5 With a goal and three assists, Redskin Mathieu Rachiele also had a team-high four points for Lancaster before the loss, but his team’s inability to get past Held—even with a 17-shot third period—likely hurt Lancaster in the standings. At least three of those shots were quality chances that could have tied the score, but Held held strong by stopping a Josh Hendel shorthanded breakaway with 5:20 left on the clock, stonewalling another at point blank range with 4:26 left, and getting help from the post on one with less than two minutes left in the game. It gave Held a 33-shot shutout, while Lenhard blocked 25 of the 28 pucks that came his way. “Their goalie made some big saves when he needed to,” Miller said of Held, “so unfortunately it’s just one of those days when you don’t find the back of the net.”

“Sometimes you’ve got to have that,” Gilham added of his keeper’s hot hand. “We’re still kind of up in the air on our goaltending; who’s going to take the reins, so it was nice to see the way he played. He looked confident in there, and that’s always a good thing. “But I give Kevin credit,” he added. “He’s a good coach. We were up 3-0 and I would say dominating the game, but this kids never stopped and they had their chances in the third because of it. They kept working.” And that continued to be the plan for Lancaster, which again looked to rebound from this loss and get back on another hot streak when they battled McQuaid on Monday, Dec. 29 after early New Year deadlines. “It wasn’t one of our best games,” Miller said, “but you know what? We’ll shake it off and get ready for the next one.”

Aside from Concannon, that included St. Mary’s senior Sean Wilson, which scored 10 on the night for the Lancers. Depew, on the other hand, was led by freshman Chad Biersbach, who netted a gamehigh 14. He was followed by senior Collin Gemerek, who sank 12. “I though Chad really stepped up tonight as a freshman, playing as well as he played,” Jones said. “Collin’s also played well, but he struggled at times. He did some great things and did some things that we’re shaking or head on, but in the middle (of the game) he struggled, and when he struggles we’re going to struggle.” That could have been the case with St. Mary’s and Molson, but Rath was glad to see it wasn’t. “We needed that,” he said of Concannon’s play. “Him and Sean Wilson played really hard for us, and we gotta have that because other teams are going

to start keying on Takal, so we gotta have other guys stepping up. We need three or four players to score in double-digits for us to be successful as we go on.” “But it was a typical DepewSt. Mary’s slugfest for a little while,” added Rath, whose team remained perfect at 6-0. “It was a fun game to be a part of; sometimes a little-wracking, but it was fun either way.” Jones wasn’t quite as pleased when it was over, but said he knows what it’ll take to fix his ailing 3-4 squad. “We aren’t a great offensive team just yet,” he said. “We’re trying to get better and add some things that will make us better, so that’s got to come. We’ll just keep working to get there.” Depew earned its spot at the finals table by defeating City Honors 52-51 on Dec. 20, while Lancaster clobbered City Honors 73-52 in the consolation game on Dec. 22.

Lancaster’s Schmitz makes the tough decision

By Matthew Ondesko MANAGING EDITOR

“The end goal is to become an officer. So you think about how am I developing as an officer? How will I become a better officer after I graduate?” - West Point Yearling Jake Schmitz. Picture yourself sitting in a classroom at 17 or 18-years old. You’re choosing where you want to attend college for the next four years. Wondering what you may major in. Seeing where your buddies may end up. Now picture yourself sitting in that same classroom wondering if you should attend one of the three military academies. Forgoing a “normal” college life. The normal college atmosphere for the staunch, regimented, life of a military education. You wonder how many 18-year-olds could sit and make that decision of giving four years at an academy to then turn around and give five more years of active service upon graduation and three more of reserves. But, for some seniors in high school, it’s an easy decision. It’s a decision that

High School graduate Jake Schmitz hasn’t regretted. “It’s [academy life] everything I though it would be,” stated Schmitz recently at a dinner held, at Russell’s Steaks, Chops & More, for Western New Yorkers who are attending either West Point, the Naval Academy or Air Force Academy. “It’s challenging, but it’s not too hard.” In hasn’t been easy for Schmitz at West Point. But, like so many before him, it never is. Plebe year (freshman) is all about the Beast. Beat Barracks is meant to test you physical and mentally. If you can make it through the first six weeks of the summer, and live to tell about it, then you can make it at the academy. But, it just isn’t the military training you have to deal with while at West Point. You also have to deal with the Ivy League education and extracurriculars. Every Cadet at West Point is made to take part in some kind of sport whether it is on the varsity or club level. It makes for long days and nights. It also makes for the need for great time management. Getting up at 6 a.m. and going to 10 or 11 p.m., if not

later, could easily get you behind in your studies. “It’s a lot like most other colleges, especially during the academic year,” explained Schmitz. “Most of your focus is on academics. It’s almost like high school where you have to go to every class, and you have structured periods. Balancing academics, and I was on the cross country team, and trying to get enough sleep I would say was the most challenging.” For Schmitz, however, it’s all worth it. Sure he could be living that “normal” college life. But, he has a bigger purpose. He wants to help server and protect the freedom that many of us enjoy. “Ultimately, I want to serve the military in some capacity,” said Schmitz. “I saw how other people benefited a lot from serving our country. I wanted to give back. I was also looking at the best college that I wanted to go to. It was the best path to serving the military and finding the right college to go to.” While Schmitz was set on heading to West Point, he still had to get his parents on board. Parents have a tendency to be just a tad protective on their children. Especially when it

comes to possibly going overseas and fighting in conflicts all over the world. Schmitz said, however, while his family was a little surprised by his waiting this life, they were behind his decision. “I think they were a little surprised that I wanted to go the military route,” he said. “They were very supportive. They loved the idea.” A mathematics major at West Point, Schmitz will still have to serve five years of active duty after the graduation. He can be stationed all over the world, and will be able to experience different cultures and different lifestyles. The commitment to be in the military for that long never really entered his mind. He just knows he wants to make a difference in the world, whatever that may be. “Five years isn’t too much of a commitment,” stated Schmitz. “It’s something that you do always think about, because you become a Second Lieutenant after you get commissioned. The end goal is to become an officer. So you think about how am I developing as an officer? How will I become a better officer after I graduate?”
