Ford, Walker-Johnson lead Kenmore West to playoff victory over Lancaster in quarters By Jonah Bronstein SPORTS REPORTER

In what coach Rich Harris described as “a real rollercoaster ride,” Kenmore West emerged from a shutout loss last week at rival Kenmore East to win its playoff opener in dominating fashion. The Blue Devils rushed

for 435 yards Saturday (Oct. 25) to beat Lancaster, 41-21, in a Section VI Class AA quarterfinal at Crosby Field. Junior running back Terrell Ford racked up 267 yards and two touchdowns, while junior quarterback and fellow track star DeAngelo Walker-Johnson sprinted for 117 yards and three touchdowns,

while throwing for another score. “Our line blocked excellent,” Walker-Johnson said. “I gie all the credit to them. They gave us holes and we hit them.” Kenmore West, seeded second in Class AA, will host third-seeded Orchard Park at 2 p.m. Saturday. The winner will move on to the sectional champion-

ship game at Ralph Wilson Stadium. Orchard Park beat Kenmore West, 35-18, on Sept. 13, but WalkerJohnson missed the game due to injury. “That really hurt me that I couldn’t be out there,” he said. “We’ve got to come out this week and be focused. Because this is the biggest game of the year so far.”

Sekuterski has sights set on Depew passing record By Jonah Bronstein SPORTS REPORTER

When Dylan Sekuterski stepped in at quarterback for an injured Anthony Buono last fall, Depew coach Brian Wilson wasn’t sure what to expect. Buono was on pace to set many of the Wildcats passing records, while Sekuterski was a promising junior starting in the defensive secondary and known more for his athletic ability than his passing prowess. Wilson decided to see what Sekuterski could do on his second snap, splitting four receivers out wide and sending them all on vertical routes. Sekuterski completed a 35-yard pass to classmate Nick Perrine. “And we never looked back from there,” Wilson recalled this week.

After losing 7-0 in their big rivalry game to close out the regular season, the Blue Devils answered the bell early against Lancaster, opening an early 12-0 advantage and taking a 26-7 lead into halftime. “You go from winning the division on a Thursday night over a really good Williamsville North team and then laying an egg at

Cheektowaga defeats Depew, advances to semis

Kenmore East, it really puts a dent in your armor, in your confidence,” Harris said. “Sports, I think, is 90 percent confidence. I said to them, ‘work hard, and everything will be erased.’ And that’s what happened.”

One might have expected a much larger celebration for the Cheektowaga High School football team on Friday night (Oct. 24). After all, the Warriors had snapped a run of first-round misery and eliminated defending Section VI Class B champion Depew with an impressive 41-24 victory. And while the scoreboard on the South side of the field was certainly cause for cheers, the real buzz came from cell phone checks. And even more excitement came from the news that the Warriors will get a chance to atone for a lopsided Week 7 loss.

It will be Cheektowaga vs. Maryvale again next weekend. The third-seeded Warriors owned the second half on Friday night in front of a packed house. The Flyers, coming off a 35-6 win at Cheektowaga a week earlier, won 7-0 at East Aurora. “We want Maryvale next week,” said Cheektowaga fullback Dreqon Trotter, who had two sacks on defense and a rushing touchdown on offense. “They took our pride away last week so I want them bad.” Cheektowaga will get a chance to atone a Week 7 disaster against rival Maryvale as the Flyers visit the Warriors for the second time in three weeks. The Maroon Madness Rivalry had been all Cheektowaga for more than a decade but Maryvale snapped a 12-game losing streak to the Warriors in style in Week 7.

Hersey, Emmerson share field for first time By Jonah Bronstein SPORTS REPORTER

Justin Hersey and Dan Emmerson have been best friends since the first grade, but never played on the same football team. Hersey was called up to the Lancaster junior varsity team in eighth grade, while Emmerson played modified. T h e f o l l o w i n g y e a r, Hersey enrolled at nearby St. Mary’s, where his father, Dan, was the head coach. Hersey expected to be the starting quarterback for St. Mary’s his senior year, but when the Lancers decided after last season to change coaches, “It just didn’t feel

right playing at St. Mary’s with my dad not coaching me anymore.” Throwing the ball around in informal workouts with his former classmates felt right from the onset, and Hersey was finally able to team up with Emmerson when he transferred back to Lancaster this fall. With junior Dan Speyer entrenched at quarterback, Hersey was moved to a hybrid receiver/running back position on offense, and free safety on defense. “He’s really been the quarterback of our defense,” Lancaster coach Chris Dickson said. Hersey was eager to play different positions, he said, because at 5-foot-7, he is unlikely to play quarterback in college. “I wanted to show colleges what I could do at other positions,” he said. Dickson, who coached

Hersey for one year on JV, was happy to have such a player back in his program. “He was a nice addition,” Dickson said. “He’s a coach’s son, so he knows the game. Very knowledgeable, savvy kid. “He’s that type of kid that has grit to him, loves football, wants to play football, and he’s unselfish. He said, ‘Coach, whatever you have planned is what I want to do.’” Hersey has noticed and appreciated the success St. Mary’s has had this season. “Those are my guys over there, and they are doing great,” he said. “But I’m really happy with my decision to come here,” Hersey added. “Being able to play with all these guys in the LancasterDepew game was something special, and I took advantage of this opportunity and really enjoyed it.”

Senior stud sidelined for St. Mary’s spikers

By William Wilczewski SPORTS REPORTER

Looking back on Oct. 28’s 3-0 sweep of Nardin, St. Mary’s outside hitter Leah Meyer should have fond memories knowing her Lady Lancers finished the regular season undefeated (39-0-1 overall, 16-0 in league play). Unfortunately, the memories of that day for one of the country’s elite seniors will be anything but fond after she suffered what could be a postseason-ending ankle injury after Meyer ran into the referee stand during the contest, then fell awkwardly to the floor. “Everybody’s saddened by the loss,” Lady Lancer skipper Donnie Pieczynski said. “The good things is that it’s not career-ending.” The bad thing, though, is that the severe sprain did likely put the 6-foot-3, Duke University commit out of commission for the Monsignor Martin Athletic Association tournament, which will run Nov. 1-5. To boot, when asked on Oct. 30 what Meyer’s chances are to play in Nov. 9’s state tourney, Pieczynski simply said, “slim,” after he saw his

stalwart’s “not too pretty” x-rays. Meyer—a 17-year-old with a 99.62 average at SMHS— also had an MRI on Oct. 29, and had expected results back by this past Tuesday. “It’s a new experience for me,” she said on Oct. 30, explaining that she was hurt in the offseason last year but was healthy again by the time the season rolled around, “so I’m just going to take it day by day.” Pieczynski, on the other hand, needed an immediate solution, so he simply reshuffled his lineup, much like last season when now-junior Alyssa Zirnheld suffered a knee injury on the last point of the last set in the MMAA title game—an injury that Zirnheld is still sidelined with a year later. Meyer—who was initially wearing a boot, icing, elevating and popping Motrin for the swelling—is expected to return much quicker than that. In the meantime, though, she said a severe sprain won’t even come close to stopping her from performing her other team duties during this year’s playoff run. “I’m going to do everything I can to be the captain from the bench,” she said, “but I have complete faith in my girls and just know they’re going to kill it.” “She’ll be better sooner rather than later,” Pieczynski added about the big picture, “but how it will affect our quest for Monsignor Martin

and state titles is unknown. “That (ref) stand couldn’t’ve, shouldn’t’ve, wouldn’t’ve been there,” he added, “but I don’t want this to sound like sour grapes. These kinda things happen … but you can’t take a kid like that out and not have an impact.” Because of that impact, Meyer’s younger sister Caitlyn—a sophomore—will fill her big sister’s shoes on the court, while freshman Summer Slade will fill Caitlyn’s middle hitter spot. Pieczynski will also look to his bench—which he calls role-players—to fill in those roles in the back row. The No. 1 Lady Lancers also had some time to adjust to those adjustments, because—as the the 35th-ranked girls team in the country on prepvolleyball.com, according to Pieczynski—he wasn’t expecting too much stiff competition in the MMAA tourney, which included round one foe and No. 8-ranked Nichols on Nov. 1. Still, he obviously wishes the elder Meyer would be on the court. “She’s a huge part of what we do,” said Pieczynski, who’s been coaching at SMHS for 15 years; eight in the head roll. “You really can’t talk about replacing her, but we just need to sustain what we’ve been doing all season long. “She’s the best player I’ve ever seen in Western New York,” he added. “I mean, she’s the 45th-ranked player

in the country (on prepvolleyball.com) and she’s going to Duke. She can do things I’ve only seen the guys do.” The Duke part of that comment, though, is bittersweet for Pieczynski because “it would be so sad if (Oct. 28) was the last time for me to see her in a St. Mary’s uniform,” he said. “You get attached to these kids, and Leah’s been a joy to watch. Coaching her has been a privilege … so I hope I get another chance to (at state).” Meyer—who plans to study pre-med or biology at Duke— hopes so, too. “It was a big disappointment when it happened,” she said, and it was horrible that it happened at this part of the season. But, again, (after the injury) I told (my teammates) that it’s in their hands now, and they’ve all stepped up to the plate. I know they can do it.” News and notes: Last season, the Lady Lancers went undefeated and won the MMAA title before narrowly losing a three-set state title match by a combined seven points to St. Francis Prep of the Brooklyn-Queens Diocese. This season, aside from a tie to Pennsylvania’s Nazareth being the only blemish on an otherwise perfect slate, the St. Mary’s girls volleyball team also has three tournament titles—their own invitational, the Eden invite and the Garden City invite in New Jersey—on its 2014 resume.

Senior one-ups own passing mark “Sekuterski” from page B1 Sekuterski set a school record with 1,071 passing yards in his junior season, leading the Wildcats to a sectional title and their first trip to the state semifinals. Now, having passed for a record 1,128 yards through the first eight games of his senior season, Sekuterski entered Wednesday night’s game against Riverside needing 89 yards to pass Aaron Ertel for the all-time passing record (results weren’t available at press time). Ertel passed for 2,388 yards in 25 games, while Sekuterski sat on 2,299 yards after 18 games. Sekuterski has also rushed for 502 yards and three touchdowns this season. “He is such a competitor that there are times when he can be impatient and leave the pocket early,” Wilson said. “But when he does those things, good things

tend to happen. “And this year, I thought he was seeing the field and being very secure in his reads.” Sekuterski entered his final high school football game with a 14-5 record as a starting quarterback. “He’s the type of guy who will throw the team onto his back when he has to,” Wilson said. “Last year, when Buono went down, Dylan became the drive of our team, the heart. He moved us forward,” senior lineman Josh Sugg said. “This year, Dylan kept that drive, kept us moving forward, pushing to make the extra block, or the extra tackle.” Wilson said Sekuterski could have an opportunity to play quarterback in college, but may wind up playing defensive back, or choose to focus on baseball.

Depew held to three second-half points “Depew” from page B1 A w e e k f r o m n o w, nobody will care about the first meeting. In fact, Cheektowaga was past it long ago. “When they came in on Monday, we didn’t even watch the film,” Cheektowaga coach Mike Fatta said. “What we did instead was we made a highlight film for them and showed them the plays we’ve made during the year. We said, ‘This is who we are. I don’t know who that was last Friday, but this is who we are.’” And a second win this season against Depew didn’t come easy. But the Warriors defense, which gave up nearly 500 yards against Maryvale, came up big against the Wildcats again when it mattered most. The War-

riors held high-powered Depew off the scoreboard for the game’s last 21 minutes and Cheektowaga scored the last 20 points of the contest. “The second half we just had to turn it up,” said Cheektowaga running back Marshawn Gibson, who had 146 yards and a touchdown. “They really couldn’t stop offense so we just kept grinding and pounding. And the defense came up big for us in the second half.” Tyler Anna’s 29-yard field goal gave Depew a 24-21 lead after the first drive of the second half, but it was all Warriors from there. Cheektowaga regained the lead on Gibson’s 4-yard TD run and extended the edge on Zak Ciezki’s 7-yard

touchdown pass to Davion Stallworth early in the fourth. Naheem Shah sealed the deal with a 42yard interception return for the game’s final score. For Depew, Dylan Sekuterski threw for 228 yards and two touchdowns and added 68 yards and another score on the ground. Anna had an 86yard touchdown reception on offense and two interceptions on defense to go with his field goal. The Wildcats (6-2), who reached the state semifinals a year ago, were hit hard by injuries all season long. Standout receiver Bobby Burns missed the game, while star fullback and linebacker Nick Perrine was severely limited by an injury first suffered in Week 3.

Cheektowaga (6-2) had lost playoff home games in each of the last three years, including firstround upsets in 2012 and 2013. But that’s all a thing of the past now for the Warriors – as is Week 7. It’s all about getting back to Ralph Wilson Stadium for the first time since the 2009 championship season. One more win against a rival will net that – and the revenge Cheektowaga desperately covets against Maryvale (7-1). “That’s who the kids wanted and that’s who they’re getting,” Fatta said after learning the Maryvale game had ended, “so we’ll see how it goes.”

Ken West’s Terrell Ford had a big day in the Section VI Class AA quarterfinals against Lancaster. Walker scored on runs of 5 and 12 yards before Lancaster’s Dan Speyer answered with his own rushing touchdown to make it 12-7 midway through the second quarter. Ford ripped off an 80-yard touchdown run on the first play of the following drive, and Walker-Johnson’s 12yard touchdown pass to Gavin Sloan with just under a minute remaining in the half made it 26-7 after Ford’s two-point conversion run. Kenmore West extended its lead to 34-7 just after halftime on Ford’s 28-yard touchdown run and a two-point conver-

sion from Jayson Taylor. Speyer connected with sophomore receiver LG Castillo for a 40-yard touchdown on the next series, then found Dan Scarpella for a 27-yard catch-and-run score to bring Lancaster within 34-21 at the end of the third quarter. Lancaster was poised to get the ball back with eight minutes remaining when senior Tim Stoerr took full advantage of his first carry of the season, sprinting 20 yards to convert a fake punt on fourth-and-8. Walker-Johnson ran in from 25 yards out two plays later to seal the victory.

THE COLLEGE UB women clinch regular season MAC championship ••• Russell Cicerone was named MAC men’s soccer player of the week after leading UB to two wins last week. Cicerone, a sophomore who starred for the local FC Buffalo squad last summer, had two goals and two assists in a 4-0 win over St. Bonaventure and netted both goals in a win over Northern Illinois. He currently ranks second in the MAC with 10 goals and 23 points. The Bulls (5-8-2, 1-02) play a non-conference

game at West Virginia this weekend. ••• The Buffalo State women’s soccer team picked up a win over New Paltz and a draw against defending SUNYAC champion Oneonta to claim the No. 6 seed in the conference tournament. Gabrianna Boldinski (Kenmore East) had an assist in the 2-1 win over New Paltz. The Bengals will play at Fredonia on Saturday in the quarterfinals. Fredonia won 1-0 at Buffalo State on Oct. 4.

Courtney Mann had a special feeling about the University at Buffalo women’s soccer team all the way back in preseason training. She turned out to be right. UB clinched the MidAmerican Conference regular season championship last weekend with a 2-0 victory over Miami (Ohio). Mann, a Frontier graduate and fourth-year starter in the midfield, was one of eight seniors honored on the field at UB Stadium prior to the game. “What a tremendous accomplishment for the girls,” UB coach Shawn Burke said. “I am so

proud of their effort and to clinch against one of the top teams in the MAC says a lot about our team.” The Bulls (12-2-3, 8-0-2 MAC) will look to finish unbeaten in conference play for the first time ever when they host Akron on Thursday (Oct. 30). UB will enter the MAC championship tournament as the No. 1 seed and host a quarterfinal game Sunday at UB Stadium. Riding a nine-game unbeaten streak, UB has also jumped up to 47th in the NCAA Ratings Percentage Index, a high watermark for the program. “Our current RPI ranking is recognition for all their hard work and dedication to attain our ultimate goal of an NCAA

Tournament appearance,” Burke said. UB last won a MAC regular season title in 2000 but has never won the MAC tournament or qualified for the NCAA Tournament. Burke is in his first season as UB’s head coach after five seasons as an assistant. When Burke first joined the UB program after two years on the men’s staff at Canisius, he made recruiting Mann one of his first priorities. Mann, one of the Bulls senior captains, has provided steady leadership throughout the season. “In eight years of coaching in college, she is one of the best athletes I’ve worked with,” Burke said. “She literally never takes a day off. Not in

training, or in games. For the past four years, one centerpiece has been her being in that lineup every day.” Other locals on the UB roster included sophomore defender Rachel Cook (Williamsville South) and senior goalkeeper Sarah Moore (Orchard Park). Freshman goalkeeper Laura Dougall has a goals-against average of 0.36, a .915 saver percentage and 11 shutouts, ranking first in the MAC and in the top five nationally in all three categories. Sophomore Katie Roberts leads the MAC with 10 goals and 22 points. Celina Carrero has six goals, including three game-winners, and 17 points.

Bulls fall in Wood’s first game as head coach By Jonah Bronstein SPORTS REPORTER

Changing coaches couldn’t reverse the course of the University at Buffalo’s football season. And neither could a standout game from senior linebacker Adam Redden (St. Francis). After firing head coach

Jeff Quinn and promoting offensive coordinator Alex Wood, the Bulls had their worst offensive performance of the season Saturday in a 20-13 home loss to Central Michigan. UB (3-5, 1-3) has now lost three straight in the Mid-American Conference and must win its final four regular season games to become bowl eligible.

The Bulls gained just 38 yards rushing on the day. Running back Anthone Taylor had a season-low 25 yards after coming into the game ranked 10th in the country in rushing yards. “They rendered us to be one-dimensional offensively, and when that happens, it’s tough to win,” Woods said. Redden, who grew up in

Buffalo and Amherst, did his best to keep the Bulls in the game. The senior linebacker had 10 tackles (3.5 for loss), to sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery to earn MAC East defensive player of the week honors. Redden created a turnover on his first sack that led to UB’s first touchdown after the Bulls had fallen be-

hind 14-0 in the early going. A third-team all-MAC pick as a junior, Redden is on his way to earning allconference honors again this season. He leads the MAC in tackles for loss with 12 and is second with three forced fumbles. He has 55 tackles this year and a team-high five sacks. Quarterback Joe Licata (Williamsville South)

threw for 233 yards and two touchdowns Saturday. He passed Joe Freedy to move into fourth in school history with 5,994 career passing yards. The Bulls play next Wednesday at Ohio. UB’s remaining home games at both weeknight matchups, Nov. 11 against Akron and Nov. 19 against Kent State.

Bengals lose to Utica, need win this week to regain first place By Jonah Bronstein SPORTS REPORTER

The Buffalo State football team’s NCAA Tournament aspirations took a major hit Saturday with a home loss to Utica. Off to their best start since 1999 and sitting atop the Empire 8 standings for the first time, the Bengals turned the

ball over three times in the 31-21 loss. Buffalo State (5-2, 3-2) now visits nationally-ranked St. John Fisher needing a win to regain first place in the Empire 8 standings. The conference champion automatically qualifies for the NCAA Tournament. Another loss would also likely take the Bengals out of consideration for an at-large

berth. Mike Doherty (Kenmore East) led the Buffalo State offense with five catches for 165 yards and a 40-yard touchdown that gave the Bengals an early 7-0 lead. Utica went up 24-7 by halftime before John Alessandra (Kenmore East) recovered a fumble that led to a Rich Pete touchdown, bringing the Bengals within

10 points. Quarterback Kyle Hoppy (Orchard Park) fumbled on Buffalo State’s next possession, however, and Utica would take advantage of the opportunity to push its lead up to 31-14. Dan Serignese relieved Hoppy at quarterback in the fourth quarter and connected with Doherty on a 50-yard gain before finding Ryan

Carney (Olean) for an 8-yard touchdown pass that brought the Bengals within 31-21 with 7:16 remaining. But Buffalo State couldn’t get any closer, and in the process, gave up pole position in the Empire 8 title race. St. John Fisher, coached by Lockport native Paul Vosburgh, is coming off a 61-0 win over Alfred State. James Chambers (Lockport) scored

his third touchdown of the season in the win, and Sammy Hasan (Williamsville South) recovered a fumble in the end zone for a score. The Cardinals are ranked 15th in the latest D3football. com poll. Buffalo State is no longer receiving any votes after getting top 25 consideration the past two weeks.

Ken-East band director in running for Grammy Award By: Lauren Kirchmyer

It has been said that Kenmore East High School has one of the best music programs around, and the students and faculty of the school point to Phil Aguglia as the reason why. “I was one of those awkward kids who didn’t really fit into a lot of places,” Aguglia said. “I struggled a lot but it was through band that I found a place. It became part of who I was.” He started taking trumpet lessons, an instrument his dad played, in fifth grade at Southside Elementary School in Buffalo. During his sophomore year at Hutchinson Central Technical High School, his band director allowed him to work with and help other students. Seeing his peers succeed because of his help filled him with satisfaction. “No matter what my personal successes were, I felt more accomplished when people I worked with did well. That’s why I wanted to be a teacher,” Aguglia said. He went on to receive a bachelor’s in music education from Ithaca College and a master’s in music with a focus in education from SUNY Fredonia. He taught in Massachusetts, followed by West Valley, before making his back to Western New York to teach middle and high school band for Cleveland Hill Union Free School District in

Cheektowaga. “He took a program that was in its infancy with very basic skills and turned them into a very respected band and music program in Western New York, all on his own,” said Joseph Greco, who started with Aguglia at Cleveland Hill around 1997 and currently is the assistant principal at Kenmore East High School. “He put in hours after school, weekends, working with kids for extremely long hours.” And his ways haven’t changed. In 2002, Aguglia moved to Kenmore East. His workday starts at 7 a.m. and sometimes goes until 10 p.m. He is in charge of wind ensemble, concert band, three jazz bands, two jazz combos, several small chamber groups, individual lessons as well as pep band.

He puts in around 70 hours each week. He will even work on weekends and during the summer to make sure his students are getting the best music education. “I run a different kind of program, it’s a little nontraditional,” he said. When students are not in class with Aguglia, they are allowed to go into his classroom and work on material including chords, scales and rhythms. “Great things happen when you allow this flexibility.” “The way he teaches things is indescribable,” said Isabelle Bertino, a senior at Kenmore West High School. “You’re not just learning something you have to memorize, he makes sure you can understand it, which is what a lot of teachers are not capable of doing.” Last year, the Recording

Crossword Puzzle W W W. C P O W N Y . C O M

Academy and the Grammy Foundation introduced the Grammy Music Educator Award. It only takes one nomination to apply for the award. Aguglia received about 60 nomination emails, but he didn’t pursue. When the competition opened for 2015, Aguglia’s email was flooded with nominations once again and he decided to give it a chance. This year about 30,000 people were nominated for the award. Approximately 7,000 people followed the link in the email to fill out the application. From there, 222 music educators from around the country were selected for the quarterfinals. Aguglia is now one of only 25 people who remain in the competition. “It’s humbling,” Aguglia said. “I’ve won a lot of awards, but it doesn’t mean anything to me unless what’s happening in here, in the classroom, is working.” “He’s a big part of why Kenmore East is successful,” Greco added. “I don’t know anyone who works any harder. He’s extremely well deserving, and I know I speak for the entire school.” Aguglia made sure to include the entire school in his nomination process in return. When he found out he was one of 25 who remained in the competition, he had to film videos answering questions about why he was deserving of the award. Besides showing video clips and pictures of his students past and present, Aguglia shared in his videos how he brings in guest artists, allows his students to perform throughout Western New York and travel to places like Las Vegas and Disney World, recruits students through unique programs, proposes ideas to the school district to receive new instruments, and is involved with charitable and educational organizations such as Music is Art. He even had busloads of students collect instruments and volunteer in New Orleans, La. after Hurricane Katrina hit. “One thing that is important to me is that my students understand there is a bigger world out there,” Aguglia said. “It’s not about what just happens in this room. I say to them, ‘Leave a footprint bigger than your own so when you graduate there’s something they remember you by,’ and I’m never disappointed.” Should he win the Grammy Award, he would receive a $10,000 honorarium. Kenmore East’s Music Department would receive $6,000 through the Ford Drive 4 UR School program and a $10,000 grant, allowing Aguglia to start an artist in residence program at the school and let the students work with a mentor, a professional from the music industry. “The help we would get from the Grammy Awards wouldn’t just be used towards anything it’s for us, for the students, and Mr. A always puts his students before himself or anything else,” Bertino said. “I truly believe he deserves this award.” CPOWNY READERS

Sergeant Nathan Berry from Alden has reenlisted to continue service with the Company A, 2-108th Infantry. Specialist Brian Borden from Buffalo has reenlisted to continue service with the 152nd Engineer Support Company. Sergeant Victoria Braun from Kenmore has reenlisted to continue service with the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 27th Brigade Special Troops Battalion. Private First Class Andrew Burns from Buffalo has reenlisted to continue service with the 152nd Engineer Support Company. Staff Sergeant Thomas Cassick from Lockport has reenlisted to continue service with the Company D (Forward Support Company Reconnaissance, Surveillance and Target Acquisition), 427th Brigade Support Battalion. Specialist Lawrence Hagler from Buffalo has reenlisted to continue service with the Company A, 2-108th Infantry. Sergeant Kenneth Lilley from Lockport has reenlisted to continue service with the 827th Engineer Company. Private First Class David Olewniczak from Lancaster has reenlisted to continue service with the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 27th Brigade Special Troops Battalion. Sergeant Nicholas Sansalone from Niagara Falls has reenlisted to continue service with the Troop C, 2-101 Cavalry (Reconnaissance, Surveillance and Target Acquisition). “The New York Army National Guard has sustained our force at or above 100 percent strength for the better part of five years now,” Murphy said. “Keeping those ready forces in our ranks means that New York is ready to provide forces for state missions here at home, as we saw during Hurricane Sandy or for the federal missions supporting our nation around the country and around the world. “Each of our 16,000 men and women serving in the Army and Air National Guard has an important role and I’m pleased that so many continue to reenlist and remain part of our New York National Guard family.” For more information about the New York Army National Guard, visit www.dmna.ny.gov or www.1800goguard.com.

They say adversity makes you stronger and CASPER has had a lot of adversity to deal with out on the street. He came running up to one of our volunteers when we were doing TNVR in Buffalo. It was like he was saying ‘take me, take me...’ and we did! He is mildly positive for FIV, is a real lover and has green eyes as big as his gentle heart... please consider adding him to your home. He is good with other kitties. CASPER qualifies for our “Special Kitties for Special People” adoption promotion. If you would like more information, call Second Chance Sheltering Network at 652-6051. Bloomsbury Lane Toy Shoppe to celebrate ‘Neighborhood Toy Store Day’

Helping students start their scholastic journey Erie Community College and the Lackawanna City Court’s Education 2 Recovery and Pathways Court Initiative offers free high school equivalency classes and other education-related services to those ready to pursue vocations via two-year degree or certificate programs. And with open enrollment now available, the initiative is waiting for individuals eager to start down a new, focused career path. “ECC is proud to team with the Lackawanna City Court on this educational initiative,” ECC President Jack Quinn said. “Partnerships like this strengthen our community, and we at the college are always looking for these types of opportunities.” For over 12 years, ECC and local judicial districts have teamed up to provide individuals disabled by substance abuse and/or mental health problems with educational case management while they are participating in treatment. However, having realized that approximately 45 percent of these participants did not have a high school diploma, ECC has joined with Lackawanna City Court—just like it has with Buffalo and Niagara Falls city courts in the past—for an educational partnership that brings equivalency classes right to the court site. In line with ECC’s tag line of, “start here, go anywhere,” this partnership pathway encourages just that, and is the first of its kind in New York State. Classes are held inside Lackawanna City Court’s Hank Pirowski Education Center from 1 to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Along with courses focused on advancing eager students forward, the program also offers additional services, including career advisement; information about Educational Opportunity Program and Accuplacer test dates; referral to an academic advisor; and eventual assistance with ECC’s entry application and financial aid forms like FAFSA and TAP. For additional information, stop by the location at 714 Ridge Rd., or call Jennifer Dunn at 845-7218.

As a child, there’s nothing quite as exciting as a trip to the neighborhood toy store. Gazing with wonder at the aisles of exciting choices, holding your new toy for the very first time, and anticipating the moment when you finally take your new gifts home. On Saturday, Nov. 8, Bloomsbury Lane Toy Shoppe, will join hundreds of locally owned stores across the country to celebrate the fifth annual Neighborhood Toy Store Day, coordinated by the American Specialty Toy Retailing Association (ASTRA) to help families discover the joy of shopping at their local, independently-owned toy store this holiday season and beyond. “When you shop at an independent toy store, you are entering a universe of play possibilities,” explained Kathleen McHugh, president of the American Specialty Toy Retailing Association (ASTRA). “Neighborhood Toy Store Day is about celebrating the role the local store plays in the community. We are highlighting the

new and improved toys that promote open-ended or creative play and incorporate innovative design features. Mike and Tracy Diegelman, owners of Bloomsbury Lane Toy Shoppe, explained, “With our expert understanding of how kids play, ASTRA members have created a list of toys that deliver the highest value, inviting imaginative discovery and encouraging creative thinking.” ASTRA retailers from all over the country will kick off the holiday season by hosting Neighborhood Toy Store Day to celebrate their community, the shop local message, and the joy of play. The event delivers focused messaging to consumers on the value local businesses have in the community and for ASTRA retail members (that’s us) that come together to showcase their expertise and the important role they play in the community. And consumers can be confident that more of the dollars spent in local, independently-owned stores, stay in the community—25 percent more in contrast with national chains, ac-

cording to the 3/50 Project. Resident business owners pour more money and energy back into the community in the form of everything from tax dollars to charity donations to participating in local initiatives through civic associations and area chambers of commerce. McHugh urged shoppers to take this opportunity to be part of a celebration of community and to get to know their neighborhood toy store on Neighborhood Toy Store Day. “By shopping locally, consumers will find great toys while supporting vibrant communities and sustainable economic development,” she said. “Visit your neighborhood toy store and you may bring home more than just the perfect gift, you’ll share the spirit of the season.” For more information, visit www.yourneighborhoodtoystore.org or to contact Tracy Diegelman email: Tracydiegelman@ yahoo.com or call 6840821. The toy shoppe is located at 1 W. Main St., in Lancaster.

expertise your local store has in selecting just the right innovative, exclusive and engaging toy to help your child grow and learn through play.” As part of the festivities, Bloomsbury Lane Toy Shoppe, will offer on this special day 20 percent off your entire purchase. Join in on the fun and help celebrate in the importance of your Neighborhood Toy Store Day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8. Independent toy stores can even help you find top toys for the children on your list this holiday season with help from ASTRA’s 2014 Best Toys for Kids list.
