Local woman looks to help community with affordable consignment shop By Rebecca Gunning THE STAR EDITOR

In today’s society where everything seems to be overpriced, Pam Weller opened a business to help people not only save a few bucks, but also make a few – Ruthie Rae’s Consignment Shop. Weller was on disability from her job a little over two years ago when the idea came to her. In a family which has many women, she found they all had gowns in their closets going unused while there were other women out there who were unable to afford gowns. “I thought to myself, ‘There’s got to be a way to get these gowns to girls who can’t afford to pay hundreds of dollars for a gown’,” Weller explained. Initially she considered renting the gowns, but wasn’t sure where to get them. Then a place called Laurie’s Bridal Shop went out of business, at which time Weller bought the close to 300 gowns. After doing some research, Weller found a place in Clarence to dry clean the gowns for a reasonable price as well as a storefront over on Davidson Road. “I was like now what am I going to do? No one is going to want to rent gowns right away,” she said. “Then people started throwing me clothes.”

A sampling of the clothing available for sale at Ruthie Rae’s. After receiving bags and bags of clothing donations, Weller decided to make her store a consignment shop. “We take everything from newborn to adult clothing on consignment,” she said. “We have outfits from 18 months to size 28 for gown rentals. I have little boy’s suits, little girl’s gowns, bride’s dresses,

short dresses, long dresses, mother of the bride dresses, etc.” Ruthie Rae’s also has a variety of jewelry, bags, ties, scarfs and other accessories. The variety of items in Weller’s store makes her somewhat unique among consignment shops, which are often geared toward a specific target market.

Anyone who is interested in consigning can come right to Weller’s shop anytime at 389 Davidson Rd. “We accept 10 items per person,” she explained. “We can go through them right on the spot or they can leave them and we’ll go through them at our leisure. We give 30 percent on our clothing and 50 per-

cent on our gowns.” Weller will accept gowns in any condition, as there are people who will buy them for Halloween or other costume parties, but she is a bit pickier with her clothes. “I’m very fussy with the clothes. The only things you’ll find ripped on my clothes are jeans and that’s because they’re supposed to be like that,” she said. “Other than that I’m very fussy. If you find something in my shop that’s not marked and has a stain on it or is missing a button, please let me know.” While Weller does have tons of clothing in the store, she has even more sitting down in her basement that she is unable to make room for. “Women are insane. I just want you to know that,” she said with a laugh. “I have more women’s clothing in my basement then you could shake a stick at – most of them with tags on that women said, ‘Here, take them. I don’t want them.’” Between consigned and rentable gowns, Weller estimates she has around 400 for women to choose from in her store. Those that have the option of rental or purchase have both those prices on the tag along with the appraisal price.

WNY military honored at Russell’s Steaks, Chops & More By Matthew Ondesko MANAGING EDITOR

During the holiday season, it is easy sometime to just think about yourself and your family. The hustle and bustle of this time of year normally has something to do with that. So, when someone takes the time do something nice for others, it makes the holidays that much more special. Russell Salvatore didn’t need to go out of his way Sunday night to put on a special dinner at Russell’s Steaks, Chops & More. He wanted to. Salvatore hosted 18 young men and women, and their families, in a show of appreciation for their dedication and service to the United States. All the young men and women that were

honored are attending West Point, the Naval Academy and the Air Force Academy. “To me it feels great,” said Salvatore, before the reception started. I feel very, very proud to do this. The entire staff feels very proud. It shows that we have fine young people growing up in the United States.” The event had all the young men and women from Western New York dress up in their dress uniforms. It started off with a reception at 5:30 p.m. before dinner at 7 p.m. During the reception, it gave these young individuals a chance to catch up with friends and family.

New year brings new chances to volunteer If one of your New Year’s resolutions is to help improve the life of another or to do more good, Niagara Hospice has a volunteer position for you. Niagara Hospice will hold a new volunteer training Tuesday, Jan. 13 and continuing Wednesday, Jan. 14 at 5-9:00 p.m. Niagara Hospice Volunteer Coordinator Andrea Haseley stated the organization is looking for compassionate individuals who want to make a difference in the lives of Niagara County residents as they make their final journey. Haseley said, “Volunteer positions include patient related and non-patient related jobs. Volunteers are needed to assist with comfort tote deliveries, hairdressing, and to simply visit with patients.” Visits take place in the patient’s or caregiver’s home, at Niagara Hospice House, and at area long term care facilities where hospice patients reside. Other opportunities include helping with community outreach, clerical tasks and fundraising efforts of the Niagara Hospice Alliance. Haseley said Volunteers can choose to help in areas of their preference. The agency’s most immediate needs for volunteers are in the areas of making home visits to patients in the Lockport and Niagara Falls areas, visiting residents at Hospice at Jeanne’s House at Northgate and at David’s Path at Schoellkopf Health Care Facility, and certified pet visit volunteers. Veterans are also needed to serve as hospice volunteers as part of the We Honor Veterans initiative launched by Niagara Hospice in partnership with the WNY Veteran’s Administration. Tricia Degan, Director of Marketing & Public Relations said, “Our hospice patients who are veterans often don’t talk about their service, but we have found that when we pair them up with a volunteer who is also a veteran, a special camaraderie is shared and patients find comfort and even relief being able to talk about their experience in the service with another veteran.” The Jan. 13 and 14 volunteer training will be held at Northgate Health Care Facility at 7264 Nash Rd. in North Tonawanda. Anyone interested can contact the Niagara Hospice volunteer office at 280-0748 for an application and to register. I had never been a stranger to the life of the military. I grew up hearing stories about when my grandfather was in the Philippine Islands during World War Two, and I was always aware of the deafening silence of my uncle’s combat missions during the Vietnam War. It wasn’t until I graduated high school though when the military life became more of a reality than stories being told around the dinner table at my grandparent’s house. Several of my friends began to sign up for different branches of the military making the ultimate sacrifice for their country. I don’t think “ordinary people” as I like to call myself and others like me fully understand the choice that friends and family members

Louis truly captured what it means to be an American—the pride, resilience and the sacrifice—but most of all he captured what it meant to be an American Soldier—someone who stood by what they believed in even in the face of death. While watching the extraordinary screenplay director and actress Angelina Jolie conducted with the help of writers and the actors, I couldn’t help but be reminded of each of the people who have fought for our country and the sacrifices they take each day just to keep us safe like Louis had. As Louis sacrificed himself in order to help another war prisoner I was reminded of a childhood friend who showed great courage and honor by saving my brother from bleeding out his senior

Louis serves not only as a war hero but as a role model representing bravery, loyalty, courage, resilience and pride for those like my childhood friend as well as those joining the military today such as my best friend of twelve years. The biography serves as a great depiction of a real life account through a soldier’s eyes of what war is really like for our soldiers allowing us an inkling of some sort of understanding of what our soldiers go through. In a way it all comes down to pride—being proud to be an American soldier. Unbroken was a magnificent real life representation of what our soldiers went through and what they continue to go through as they fight to keep the American soil safe from terrorists and the like. Historic Palace Theatre set to perform ‘Harvey’

The Historic Palace Theatre proudly presents the third show in our 2014/2015 90th Birthday Season, Harvey—a comedy in three acts, on Jan. 16 through Jan. 18. Performances are Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. Written by Mary Chase and directed by Steve Copps, Harvey is a wonderfully funny comedic romp about a man, Elwood P. Dowd, and his invisible friend Harvey the Pooka which inspired the 1950 film of the same name that starred the legendary Jimmy Stewart. The story centers on Elwood’s sister, Veta Louise Simmons, and her concern for Elwood’s mental health as ‘it stands to reason nobody has ever seen a white rabbit six feet high.’ Veta decides to have her brother committed at Chumley’s Rest where we run into many secondary characters. Each one zanier and kookier than the last! So much so that the audience will begin to wonder if it’s Dowd who should be committed or the others! This production will star Eric Glynn (Hairspray!, The Importance of Being Earnest, Shrek) as Elwood P. Dowd. Veta Louise Simmons will be played by Jennifer Ossont (Ripper) while her daughter Myrtle Mae will be played by newcomer Amanda Mc-

Nulty. The family attorney Judge Omar Gaffney will be played by City Court Judge, and Palace Board Member, William J. Watson! Rounding out the cast will be Stephen Smith (The Mousetrap, The Importance of Being Earnest, Arsenic and Old Lace) as Dr. William Chumley, Jake Hayes (Shrek, Peter Pan, Scrooge) as Dr. Lyman Sanderson, Leanne Troutman (Shrek, Les Miserables) as Nurse Ruth Kelly, Dan Urtz as Duane Wilson, Peg Merrill (Ripper) as both Mrs. Chauvenet and Betty Chumley, Danielle White (Shrek, The Importance of Being Earnest) as Miss Johnson and, finally, Palace veteran William Curr (The Wizard of Oz, Oklahoma!, Joseph…, Seussical, Shrek, Peter Pan) as EJ Lofgren the cab driver. Harvey promises to be a night filled with laughs for the whole family! So don’t miss it! Tickets are $20 for adults, $18 for seniors, and $15 for students. Group rates available. Tickets may be purchased by calling 438-1130, visiting the Palace BOX OFFICE Monday - Friday from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., or at Mills Jewelers. Sweeney steps into starring role Newfane’s ‘sponge’ excelling on mats

By Nick Sabato SPORTS REPORTER

Everyone in the NiagaraOrleans League remembers Barker hoops stars Jake Haight and Mitchell Luckman. The pair led the Raiders to their first league championship since 1978. Players following in their footsteps are almost sure to draw comparisons. Current Barker swingman Christopher Sweeney is performing so well early in the season that he is making a name for himself and stepping out of the shadow of his former teammates. Sweeney was often the forgotten man the last few seasons, despite the fact that he averaged 10.2 points per game and had a team-high 41 threepoint field goals last year. Many athletes might become disgruntled with the lack of recognition or playing in someone’s shadow, but he was quite content doing what he had to do for the team to win. “I did what I had to do,” said Sweeney. “I played off-of-theball defense and I shot the ball. That was my role last year, I fit it and we went 18-0 so I can’t complain about that.” Barker lost three key seniors that filled very distinct roles on a team that won 19 games in a row last year. Haight led the Raiders in scoring (18.3 points per game), Luckman led them in assists (7.3 per game) and Bryce Moeller was strong inside with 9.1 rebounds per game. This season, though, Sweeney has taken on all of those roles and is off to a strong

He leads the Raiders in points (15.3 per game), rebounds (7.7), assists (6.7) and steals (three). Taking on such a massive workload might be overwhelming for some, but the

senior is taking it in stride. “It’s a different change,” said Sweeney. “I wouldn’t say that it’s bad, but it’s different. I’m adjusting on the fly and we have a good group of guys that are looking to

make a run.” Barker head coach Dave Carson made it clear over the summer that things were going to run through him this season. Sweeney has been impres-

sive on the court, but Carson may be more happy with the leadership that he brings to the table more than anything else.

Many athletes have been told that they are a natural at something. For Newfane’s Charlie Johnstone, it is wrestling that comes natural for him, more so than perhaps most wrestlers. The eighth grader had never even tried the sport before last year, but that didn’t stop him from posting a winning record and having his hand raised nearly 20 times. “I wanted to do basketball at first but I ended up getting dropped because I was too little,” said Johnstone. “I talked to Coach Montesanti and he got me into wrestling.” For someone to pick up a sport later in their youth is not uncommon, but Charlie’s brother Chris is another standout grappler for Newfane, so the fact that he had never tried it before last year may seem unusual. In fact, Johnstone didn’t even care to try wrestling as a child because he just didn’t like the sport at all. “I actually hated wrestling,” said Johnstone. “I thought it was a stupid sport and I never wanted to go into it. Then I got to see how people actually wrestled and I thought, ‘man, I like to fight.’”

Bronson excels at Rochester, Away from home, collects Rookie of the Year honors Lockport grad By Nick Sabato SPORTS REPORTER

It took him a few games, but Daniel Bronson had a major impact on the University of Rochester football program. After seeing spot minutes in the first four games of his freshman season, the Lockport native took over full-time as the starting quarterback. As the season went on, Bronson began to feel his confidence consistently rise and it began to show on the field as he was named the Liberty League Rookie of the Year and ECAC North Region Rookie of the Year. He even landed on the USA Football Freshman AllAmerican team. “It’s definitely a confidence booster knowing that my effort and my team’s effort were seen on a larger scale like that,” said Bronson. “It’s a big boost moving forward and building for next year.” Bronson saw a few drives here and there through the first four games before making his first start against Merchant Marine. He would go on to lead the Yellowjackets to wins in three

of his four starts, finishing fourth in the league in passing yards per game, passing efficiency and total offense per game. In total, Bronson compiled 1,093 passing yards, 10 passing touchdowns, seven interceptions and completed 53 percent of his passes. He also displayed his versatility with 415 yards and four scores on the ground. Despite all of his early success and accolades, Bronson still had to adjust to the learning curve between high school and the collegiate level. “It’s a big learning curve,” said Bronson. “There’s a big difference between 18-yearolds and 22-year-olds. There is a lot of catching up. The first couple of weeks I wasn’t getting many reps at all and my coaches kept telling me they could see the ability. From there, it was learning such a big playbook. Catching up mentally was harder than competing physically.” Once the games began, Bronson, who is hoping to become a surgeon after college, saw success come early. Starpoint club hockey expecting another strong season By Nick Sabato SPORTS REPORTER

There may not be a more dominant hockey program that few know about. Starpoint club hockey has reached ‘Super Sunday’ at the First Niagara Center each of the last four seasons, winning the small school championship on two of those occasions. While the Spartans don’t receive any school funding, the coaches are unpaid, and they receive no recognition from

Section VI, that hasn’t stopped them from building one of the top programs around. “The program is just growing,” said Starpoint head coach Clayton Wilson. “The kids work their tails off and they come to the rink every day wanting to get better. We strive to make it to Super Sunday. That’s what our goal is that we set at the beginning of the year. We’ve been fortunate enough to get there the last four years and the goal is to do it again. The way they are playing right now, it should happen, but they have to get it done. It’s not given to us.” The fact that Starpoint is on track to once again reach the small school championship is a credit to the coaching staff and

players as they face a few more challenges than the schools that play in the Section VI Federation Hockey League. Players must pay for ice time, uniforms and travel expenses, none of which are cheap. But the fact that they are used to playing travel hockey helps the cause. Club hockey programs often get a negative reputation as they are not always considered to the level of Federation programs, but Wilson claims that he would take his team against any of the small schools in Fed hockey. “I would take on any one of the local Fed small schools this year and I bet you we would be in the top three,” said Wilson. Starpoint is off to an unbeaten start this season, including a victory over Cheektowaga,

something the team hasn’t done in three years. One of the main reasons for that has been the play of a forward line consisting of captain Andrew Parrish, assistant captain Patrick Miklinski, and Josh Krupczyk. “Last year we had a very a good line, but this year it seems like we all just gel together very well,” said Miklinski. “We always know where each other is going to be. It’s worked very well; we are putting the puck in the net a lot.” Despite the prolific scoring up front, the strength of the team is on the blue line with the defense corps. The group is led by assistant captain Jake Wildt. He is joined by a quartet that logs a signifi-

Having the opportunity to play in the Kensington Lions Club All-Star Game enabled him to get his feet wet before training camp and reacquaint himself with the game. “The all-star game helped me get back into football shape,” said Bronson. “But when I got to camp I was like like, ‘Whoa!’ I was in shape

but not as in shape as I thought I was. It was just getting accustomed to playing again. It was being sore but not being hurt.” Bronson also had to get used to something rather unique in that his father was not his football coach for the first time in his life. Greg Bronson coached his son at Lockport for the better part of six years, and like so many talented coaches’ sons, Dan often had to hear that he only got playing time because his dad was the coach.

That notion may be put to rest after the season Dan Bronson had. He found the chance to play for a different coach refreshing. “It was refreshing,” said Bronson. “As you grow up you get people saying that you only play because of your dad, so it’s kind of rewarding going out to a whole new setting with people you’ve never met before. It’s a lot of fun. The program reminds me of home, and that’s why I really like it there.” Even with a stellar freshman

season under his belt, Bronson knows that he can’t remain content going into next year. Continuing to progress and get better will help him avoid having a freshman like himself take his job in the future. “There is going to be competition,” said Bronson. “As much as I want to say that I’m not going to lose, I’m only going to be able to be as good as I can be. If he’s better than me, then I have to find other ways to contribute to the team. I love competition. That’s what you play the game for.”

Growth spurt sends Dougherty down low “Prep” from page 7 “I can’t put into words how great of an experience it is,” said Dougherty. “Everybody is there for you. They are here to get you to a great school, give you a great education and make you a better person. “It has definitely gotten me ready for college. Just from the academics aspect, it’s really rigorous and we play in one of the best prep school leagues in the country. It’s a great opportunity.” One major aspect of an incoming college freshman is adapting to being on their own for the first time in their life. That comes into play in many ways, such as being homesick, interacting socially with brand new people and managing their time efficiently when nobody is looking over their shoulder. Living six hours from home, that is something that Dougherty has been able to experience before even

entering college, which he feels will prepare him well next fall. “I’m six hours away from home so it’s a good distance away,” said Dougherty. “I get to see my parents every couple months. I think it definitely gets you ready for going away to college and it’s a great experience as far as getting to interact with people socially, learning how to do things on your own and not procrastinating. My dad would always get me going, but he’s not there anymore so I have to do my own thing and grow up a little bit.” Dougherty’s post-graduation growth spurt has also affected his game on the basketball court, as one would expect when you grow so much. As a member of the Lockport High School team, he was known as a prolific shooter and his vision on

the court was described by Newfane head coach Eric Klumpp as the best he’s seen in this area in quite some time. Lockport head coach Dave Gilson prepared him in high school by allowing him to play off of the ball in order to get a feel for both guard positions, but now that he is over 6-foot, Dougherty has the ability to move to the small forward position if needed. “Last year Coach Gilson was great with pushing me to learn to play off of the ball and teaching me to play the two-guard position,” said Dougherty. “This year, my coach has been great. He’s been having me play off of the ball a little bit, and I have to, because there are other guys that can handle the rock and they are smaller than me, so I have to learn to play the off-guard. I have

always been a point guard, but now I have to learn how to score without the ball and make a difference.” Dougherty has been recruited by many Division III colleges such as the University of Rochester, Amherst College, St. Lawrence and Carnegie Melon. He is also holding out for the opportunity to earn a scholarship from a Division II school such as Daemen. But he is focusing on continuing to get better before choosing his school. “It’s all up in the air,” said Dougherty. “They are all great schools as far as I’m concerned but I would definitely love to get a scholarship somewhere. The Division II schools are definitely high on the list but they want to see how I do this year so hopefully I get a scholarship offer from one of them.”

cant amount of ice time in Justin Bender, Jeff Wawrzynek, Matt Dickerson and Josh Wildt. After being together for the majority of last year, the group feels that they are starting to come together this year. “Last year we had basically the same group of guys,” said Jake Wildt. “It showed after last year, coming into this year, that we are all coming together as a whole and starting to excel with each other because we are all the same age and we know what each other is going to do. It’s working very well.” The pressure of continuing a tradition of excellence can be overwhelming for many young players. As the captain, Parrish will be joined by two junior associates

in Wildt and Miklinski for the first time under Wilson, but they all seem to be up to the challenge. “You are expected from all your underclassmen to lead and be the person to follow,” said Parrish. “Between me and the two assistant captains that we are keeping, it’s pretty good.” This year, the goal will be to win the small school championship, and try to avoid a slip up that has happened at times on Super Sunday. Starpoint will be hoping to put it all together on the ice this year. “We always work hard but we seem to have that game where we lack a little bit,” said Parrish. “We have been playing through it and hopefully this year we can change things.”

Strong-shooting Sweeney develops inside game “Sweeney” from page 7

JEFFREY T. BARNES

Sweeney has developed his game and is strong both inside and outside this year, according to head coach Dave Carson. “He’s doing very well,” said Carson. “I’m proud of him. He’s a heck of a basketball player. He knew this summer that we were going to run everything around him. It’s a different season but he’s up for the challenge, whether it’s academics or athletics. He’s a leader. I never once said, ‘you’re the captain,’ but when the refs asked for the captain in the first game, everybody looked at Chris. That’s a testament to who he is and how the other kids respect him.” In terms of play on the court, one of the biggest additions to his game has been his interior play. Sweeney connected 69 times from the field last season, and 41 came from beyond the arc. But now that the Raiders have to fill nearly 20 rebounds per game, Sweeney has had to tweak his style of play. “Chris has really filled that

void,” said Carson. “That’s big for us, his interior play, and that goes defensively, too.” Some players want to play the style that they like regardless of how it fits within the team concept, but not Sweeney. He enjoys every aspect of the game and is willing to do whatever it takes to win, from knocking down outside jumpers to taking it to the rim and drawing contact. “Whatever helps us win,” said Sweeney. “I like grinding down there too. It’s a good, physical battle. I love basketball, it’s my favorite sport. I love every aspect of it. Whatever my team needs me to do to get a win.” If his basketball prowess hasn’t been impressive enough this season, Sweeney also recently received his acceptance to Cornell University.

Winning first novice tourney boosted youngster’s confidence “Sponge” from page 7 Johnstone has taken to the sport so well that Newfane head coach Sal Montesanti has never seen someone adapt to it as quickly as Charlie has in less than two years. It was after winning his first ever novice tournament that he found that he might have a future on the mat, and his ability to take in information quickly has helped him continue to get better every match. “I took first in my novice tournament,” said Johnstone. “I kind of caught on fast. People call me a sponge because I soak up everything.” The term ‘sponge’ is something that comes up frequently with Johnstone, both with teammates and coaches, because of his ability to learn

on the fly. Montesanti believes that his young prodigy is the most athletic kid that he’s ever coached and that he can learn a new move after one demonstration. “He’s probably one of the most athletic kids that I’ve ever seen and I’ve been teaching and coaching for 25 years,” said Montesanti. “He’s so quick. When you teach him a move, he absorbs it like a sponge. You just need to show him one time and he’s able to do it. He works hard every single day in practice. He’s everything a coach wants in a wrestler. I really think that Charlie has a great future in this sport.” Even though he is an ex-

Charlie Johnstone, right, is often referred to by coaches and teammates as a ‘sponge’ for his ability to quickly pick up and process information.

tremely talented wrestler, Johnstone still isn’t in high school, so the expectations have to remain realistic. Johnstone knows where he is on the learning curve, so he isn’t predicting any sectional or league championships right away. “I just try to get better and upgrade how I was last year,” said Johnstone. “I just try to succeed and make the state qualifiers and place so next year I can hopefully go states.” Montesanti does not want to make any predictions for Johnstone right now because he doesn’t want to limit him in any way. He does feel that if Charlie continues to keep progressing and wrestling, that he has the

ability to perform at a state level. “I expect him to have a good year,” said Montesanti. “I expect him to be in just about every match. I don’t want to say anything that’s going to predict what’s going to happen. I just think he’s going to have a really good year. If he continues with the sport he will reach a point where he will be competitive at a state level. There is no limit to Charlie.” Johnstone was able to come away with a victory in the 126-pound division at the Orchard Park Invitational earlier this year after finishing sixth at 120 pounds in the Class C Sectional tournament last season.

Twelve Days of Giving helps students have a great holiday

submitted

Andrew Smith looks forward to making a nice dinner for his family. Every day Orleans/Niagara BOCES Continuing Education teachers and staff in the Literacy Program try to help students improve their situation in life. Teacher Stephanie Bevacqua came up with a great idea to help them have a nice holiday meal as well. She asked her colleagues at the YWCA building in downtown Niagara Falls, the Trott Access Center, North Tonawanda site and Christ Community Church in Lockport if they would be willing to bring in

a non-perishable food item each day for 12 days, so that by the end of the 12 days, 12 families would have a complete holiday meal including a turkey or ham. Day one was a box of cereal, day two was a box of mashed potatoes, day three was a box of stuffing, day four was two cans of gravy, day five was two cans of soup, day six was two cans of vegetables, day seven was two cans of fruit, day eight was a box of macs and cheese, day none was one

box of dessert, day ten was two boxes of gelatin or pudding, day eleven was a bag of flour or sugar and day twelve was a ham or turkey. Teacher Rachael Rossi said: “In adult education, our students often live in poverty. They find it hard to make ends meet, especially around the holidays. We could not get over how much food we collected and how great we felt making our students’ holidays a little less stressful and a little more delicious.”
