Local woman looks to help community with affordable consignment shop By Rebecca Gunning THE STAR EDITOR

In today’s society where everything seems to be overpriced, Pam Weller opened a business to help people not only save a few bucks, but also make a few – Ruthie Rae’s Consignment Shop. Weller was on disability from her job a little over two years ago when the idea came to her. In a family which has many women, she found they all had gowns in their closets going unused while there were other women out there who were unable to afford gowns. “I thought to myself, ‘There’s got to be a way to get these gowns to girls who can’t afford to pay hundreds of dollars for a gown’,” Weller explained. Initially she considered renting the gowns, but wasn’t sure where to get them. Then a place called Laurie’s Bridal Shop went out of business, at which time Weller bought the close to 300 gowns. After doing some research, Weller found a place in Clarence to dry clean the gowns for a reasonable price as well as a storefront over on Davidson Road. “I was like now what am I going to do? No one is going to want to rent gowns right away,” she said. “Then people started throwing me clothes.”

After receiving bags and bags of clothing donations, Weller decided to make her store a consignment shop. “We take everything from newborn to adult clothing on consignment,” she said. “We have outfits from 18 months to size 28 for gown rentals. I have little boy’s suits, little girl’s gowns, bride’s dresses,

short dresses, long dresses, mother of the bride dresses, etc.” Ruthie Rae’s also has a variety of jewelry, bags, ties, scarfs and other accessories. The variety of items in Weller’s store makes her somewhat unique among consignment shops, which are often geared toward a specific target market.

Anyone who is interested in consigning can come right to Weller’s shop anytime at 389 Davidson Rd. “We accept 10 items per person,” she explained. “We can go through them right on the spot or they can leave them and we’ll go through them at our leisure. We give 30 percent on our clothing and 50 per-

cent on our gowns.” Weller will accept gowns in any condition, as there are people who will buy them for Halloween or other costume parties, but she is a bit pickier with her clothes. “I’m very fussy with the clothes. The only things you’ll find ripped on my clothes are jeans and that’s because they’re supposed to be like that,” she said. “Other than that I’m very fussy. If you find something in my shop that’s not marked and has a stain on it or is missing a button, please let me know.” While Weller does have tons of clothing in the store, she has even more sitting down in her basement that she is unable to make room for. “Women are insane. I just want you to know that,” she said with a laugh. “I have more women’s clothing in my basement then you could shake a stick at – most of them with tags on that women said, ‘Here, take them. I don’t want them.’” Between consigned and rentable gowns, Weller estimates she has around 400 for women to choose from in her store. Those that have the option of rental or purchase have both those prices on the tag along with the appraisal price.

WNY military honored at Russell’s Steaks, Chops & More By Matthew Ondesko MANAGING EDITOR

During the holiday season, it is easy sometime to just think about yourself and your family. The hustle and bustle of this time of year normally has something to do with that. So, when someone takes the time do something nice for others, it makes the holidays that much more special. Russell Salvatore didn’t need to go out of his way Sunday night to put on a special dinner at Russell’s Steaks, Chops & More. He wanted to. Salvatore hosted 18 young men and women, and their families, in a show of appreciation for their dedication and service to the United States. All the young men and women that were

honored are attending West Point, the Naval Academy and the Air Force Academy. “To me it feels great,” said Salvatore, before the reception started. I feel very, very proud to do this. The entire staff feels very proud. It shows that we have fine young people growing up in the United States.” The event had all the young men and women from Western New York dress up in their dress uniforms. It started off with a reception at 5:30 p.m. before dinner at 7 p.m. During the reception, it gave these young individuals a chance to catch up with friends and family.

New year brings new chances to volunteer If one of your New Year’s resolutions is to help improve the life of another or to do more good, Niagara Hospice has a volunteer position for you. Niagara Hospice will hold a new volunteer training Tuesday, Jan. 13 and continuing Wednesday, Jan. 14 at 5-9:00 p.m. Niagara Hospice Volunteer Coordinator Andrea Haseley stated the organization is looking for compassionate individuals who want to make a difference in the lives of Niagara County residents as they make their final journey. Haseley said, “Volunteer positions include patient related and non-patient related jobs. Volunteers are needed to assist with comfort tote deliveries, hairdressing, and to simply visit with patients.” Visits take place in the patient’s or caregiver’s home, at Niagara Hospice House, and at area long term care facilities where hospice patients reside. Other opportunities include helping with community outreach, clerical tasks and fundraising efforts of the Niagara Hospice Alliance. Haseley said Volunteers can choose to help in areas of their preference. The agency’s most immediate needs for volunteers are in the areas of making home visits to patients in the Lockport and Niagara Falls areas, visiting residents at Hospice at Jeanne’s House at Northgate and at David’s Path at Schoellkopf Health Care Facility, and certified pet visit volunteers. Veterans are also needed to serve as hospice volunteers as part of the We Honor Veterans initiative launched by Niagara Hospice in partnership with the WNY Veteran’s Administration. Tricia Degan, Director of Marketing & Public Relations said, “Our hospice patients who are veterans often don’t talk about their service, but we have found that when we pair them up with a volunteer who is also a veteran, a special camaraderie is shared and patients find comfort and even relief being able to talk about their experience in the service with another veteran.” The Jan. 13 and 14 volunteer training will be held at Northgate Health Care Facility at 7264 Nash Rd. in North Tonawanda. Anyone interested can contact the Niagara Hospice volunteer office at 280-0748 for an application and to register. More information and volunteer applications are also available at www.NiagaraHospice.org. 535 Division St. Twin City Highway North Tonawanda www.budweysmarkets.com 693-2802 VISIT US ON THE WEB!
