Wilson wins Section VI Class B2 championship Carlin’s golden goal lifts Lakemen over Falconer/Cass. Valley
By Nick Sabato SPORTS REPORTER
At the beginning of the year, Jeffrey Hart was elevated from JV to the varsity head coach at Wilson, and his first goal was to restore the program back to its glory days. Wilson has had a strong soccer tradition for a long time, with players like Andy Wright in the 1990s helping the team win 63 percent of games in school history, which ranks 10th all-time in Section VI history. That tradition has tailed off in recent years, but now it is back after the Lakemen edged Falconer/Cassadaga Valley, 1-0 behind Cesar Carlin’s goal in overtime to win the Section VI Class B2 championship on Wednesday evening (Oct. 29). “I had very high expectations for the team this year,” said Hart. “I can honestly say that they exceeded them. I knew we had talent, I knew we had some good returning players but I also knew that we were very young. We played really tough nonleague games and I really felt that we kept improving all season. “I had the kids lay out their goals ahead of the season and a lot of them said ‘sectional champions.’ I said that if we want that to reach that goal, we have to keep working towards it and I felt that we kept improving all season to get to this point.” Wilson had started the season 3-4-1 but has rattled off wins in nine of the last 10 games, including six in a row and an upset of topseeded Lackawanna to get to the finals.

NCCC girls volleyball team boasts high number of locals
Local businesses donate dugouts
By Nick Sabato SPORTS REPORTER
There is a bit of local flavor on the 2014 Niagara County Community College women’s volleyball team. Nine of the 13 players on the roster come from high schools within Niagara County, which is convenient for so many reasons, but mainly recruiting. For any collegiate team to be successful, it needs to recruit well within its own area (especially when there are multiple competing schools in that area) and that’s just what head coach Joe Daigler has done as his team sits at 16-9 heading into the NJCAA RegionalTournamentthis weekend.

Generosity can be hard to come by nowadays, especially with scholastic athletics. You often see teams in desperate need of new uniforms, equipment or facilities. That was the case at Roy-Hart, as the field hockey and softball teams dearly needed new dugouts for their fields. Luckily, a few local businesses came to the aid
of the teams and the sports boosters to not only donate the materials necessary to build the dugouts, but they built them as well. When proposition to build the dugouts came about in October, Lisa Draper, a parent of a field hockey and soccer player, contacted Dave Hill of A Superior Concrete in Gasport. That was all that was needed. “Lisa Draper contacted me about donating the concrete for the bases,” said Hill. “Then I spoke to Dom [Ciliberto] about the fact that they were going to put shelters up and he jumped right on board to donate the metal for the shelters.”

Reid races his way to five victories in 2014 season By Nick Sabato SPORTS REPORTER
Everyone in Lockport knows of Reid’s Drive-In as one of the most popular local burger joints in the area, but what most people don’t know is that Jonathan Reid, son of owner Tom Reid, is one of the top midget car drivers in New York and Pennsylvania. Reid is a part of the New York Pennsylvania Midget series and this year, he finished as one of the top racers in the circuit. The 28-year-old Lockport High School graduate finished with five wins this season and he is rapidly rising as one of the best drivers around. What probably scares his competitors most is that he is still relatively new to the sport. “When I was a freshman in college I met a guy named Harry Macy,” said Reid. “He had run a midget [car] for 40 years. I hooked up with him through a mutual friend and drove for him for six years. He unfortunately passed away last year and that’s when my dad took over our midget operation.”

Jonathan Reid, right, finished with five wins this season. As an avid racing fan that started in go-carts at the age of 6, it was natural for Reid to try the midget car circuit, but it did take him some time to learn the ropes. The differences in midget cars and go-carts, such as a different engine as well as shocks and springs, took some getting used to,
so it took him nearly four years before he found the winner’s circle for the first time. “My first year, I didn’t know that much about the cars,” said Reid. “I was running about mid-pack to start but we had a lot of mechanical issues to begin with because I wasn’t that familiar with the car. Harry
taught me a lot as we went and we gradually started to move up. I actually won three times in his car. That was a big deal because it was an old car and he was 83 at the time.” With his mentor’s passing, Reid’s father Tom took over the operation to form Reid Racing along with crew members Jack and
Jake Cain and crew chief Matty Palia. He now takes what he learned from Macy and his father’s knowledge to continue to gather as much information as he can about the sport. “Harry taught me a lot,” said Reid. “My dad helps me out and he knows a lot. I just get help from everybody that I can. I ask the faster drivers and I just try to learn every chance that I get.” With a new car this season, things began to take off for the racer, winning five of 19 races and winning the NYPA Midget series. He also finished the season impressively in the U.S. Open at Lancaster Speedway as he finished second in the NYPA race and won the open division race. When Reid first began racing midget cars, it was as a fun hobby, but now that he has had significant success, he wants to win every time he takes to the track. “As soon as we started running faster and competitive lap times with the guys in the front, all you want to do is be able win,” said Reid. “We are in a tough series with a lot of good
cars so it feels good to win and just to run up front is a good deal.” While many people in Reid’s position as an upand-coming racer might have their sights set on moving up in the racing circuit, Reid isn’t. With the combination of costs and the fact that he and his wife Brittany will be welcoming in their first child in the next few weeks, Reid is comfortable with racing midget cars, unless his daughter wants to race when she is old enough. “Racing is tough because you have to have a lot of money and sponsors because everything is so expensive,” said Reid. “I’m having a kid in the next couple of weeks so probably the midget cars are all that I end up doing. Hopefully my daughter will want to race. I just race because I love to race and there is a thrill like no other when you are out there.” While Reid will have to wait until next year to defend his NYPA title, he will have two races over the winter with one coming on Dec. 19 in Trenton, NJ and the other on Jan. 26 in Atlantic City.
All Metal Works donates all siding and roofing for dugouts “Champions” from page B1 Hill, whose daughter also plays softball, contacted Dom Ciliberto of All Metal Works in Gasport and he donated the materials for the siding and the roofing for the dugouts. For any business to donate time to build the structures and the materials, it is something that they do not have to do, but for Hill and Ciliberto, it was beneficial in several ways. “My personal opinion is that the girls are out here and it gets cold during the season or even when it’s hot and sunny, I thought it was a worthy cause for donation,” said Hill. Ciliberto felt compelled to donate for multiple reasons, one being his good friend’s daughter would get use out of them, and he saw it as an opportunity to advertise a new portion of his business. All Metal Works has recently just gotten into steel
framing, so Ciliberto saw it as a great opportunity to get his name out in the community for potential clients. “Dave’s daughter plays on the team,” said Ciliberto. “So being good friends with Dave, that’s why I donated. Steel framing is a new part of our business. So I wanted get a little exposure with that and what better way than to help the kids here locally.” Both businesses are frequent donors to fundraisers and auctions to Roy-Hart programs, so it is obvious that the school means quite a bit to them. Wilson, Newfane girls soccer fall Hot Shot in sectional semifinals Basketball Contest By Nick Sabato SPORTS REPORTER
It would have been a dream matchup of two rivals meeting on the grandest stage in the Class B Finals. Unfortunately, those dreams were dashed on Tuesday night (Oct. 28) as Wilson and Newfane were both eliminated in semifinal play at Amherst High School. The third time was not the charm for Wilson, losing in the semifinals for the third consecutive year by a score of 1-0, this time to East Aurora. “I thought it took us some time to get our feet underneath us and play,” said Wilson head coach TJ Baia. “Once we did I thought we competed better, wind may have been a factor, but I thought we had a great second half. We just couldn’t put one in the net. Credit to East Aurora, they played well, they played hard. We always come into this thing as one of the top seeds and whether or not we put too much pressure on ourselves, I don’t know. We’ve not been
able to get past this round for three years now.” Makenna Crosson was able to get East Aurora on the board midway through the first half and that was all that they needed to upset the second-seeded Lakewomen. Wilson had dominated the majority of the contest and particularly in the second half, but couldn’t get the ball past a stingy East Aurora defense. “They definitely defended well,” said Baia. “They definitely did what they had to do to defend. We had the theory in the second half that we’d rather lose 3-0 than give ourselves the chance to push for that last chance. We definitely pressed and tried to score but they defended it.” In the night cap, Newfane’s Cinderella run came to an end in heartbreaking fashion, losing to Falconer, 1-0, in quadruple overtime. The ninth-seeded Lady Panthers controlled much of the second half and into the first three overtimes but the fourth overtime was all Falconer and eventually they succumbed to
the pressure as Sydney Moore took advantage of a misplay to put the ball past Gabby Sinnott with 31.7 seconds left. It’s always difficult to lose the last game of the season, but to lose in quadruple overtime at this stage of the season can be devastating. “They played their hearts out and they have nothing to be ashamed of,” said Newfane head coach Chelsea Buzyniski. “We fought until the end. There is nothing we can do, that’s part of the game and somebody has to win.” Newfane had a dream run, upending top seed Lackawanna in the quarterfinals, and was just seconds away from penalty kicks to determine a winner in this contest, but it was not to be. The Lady Panthers were particularly effective at the end of each period, with Kayleigh Daniels coming inches from putting the game away with less than a minute to go in regulation and then Kaylee Heschke’s corner kick in the first overtime went unconverted. In the end, the missed opportunities became too much
to overcome and Falconer was able to pounce on the last mistake. “I just think we didn’t step at the right time,” said Buzyniski. “There was miscommunication and that’s what can happen. It wasn’t even one person, it was as a team. We controlled most of the game and if we capitalized early it wouldn’t be a problem.” Both teams will lose key players to graduation, including Wilson losing the likes of Lauren Austin, Rebekah Blasius, Gina Godwin, Baylee Olds and Katlynne Tubo, while Newfane loses two valuable seniors in Sinnott and Natalie Moreland. Both teams will, however, return potent scorers like Wilson’s Kayla Neumann and Emily Paterson and Newfane returns Daniels and Heschke so there are reasons to look ahead for the Niagara-Orleans League rivals. Wilson finishes the season 16-3, while Newfane winds up 13-6. East Aurora and Falconer will square off for the Section VI Class B Championship on Saturday (Nov. 1) at Amherst High School for a 7 p.m. start.

Carlin clinches Class B2 crown shortly after ringing crossbar “Champions” from page B1 Perhaps one of the biggest turnarounds has been the team’s play on the offensive end, especially considering that the Lakemen have been a stingy defensive team all season long. A huge part of the offensive success was switching Zack Sarratori from defender to midfield, and it certainly paid dividends in this game as Wilson controlled the play for the majority of the game despite only winning 1-0. “Zack Sarratori is one of those special players that I can put at any position on the field and he’s going to be the best at it,” said Hart. “He even plays goalie at times. If I know if it’s a team that has a really strong offense, I know I can drop him back to keep a low score but games like this I can put him at striker. He is the most valuable player of this team because I can really put him anywhere and he makes everybody around him play better.” The Lakemen controlled the play to start the game, but Falconer/Cassadaga Valley would turn the tables and rattle off some solid
scoring chances. In the first half it would be Wilson keeper Stephen Lyman that kept them in it, stopping Andrew Beckerink and Josh Gedor on consecutive shots to keep it scoreless. In the second half, it would be all orange and black again as they had several golden opportunities, including Sarratori pushing a ball just wide on a free run and Tyler Van Buren ringing one off the crossbar. “We knew that we just had to come out and attack,” said Sarratori. “They were very strong up top so we decided to put more pressure up top and see what happens.” Much like they did against City Honors in overtime, the Lakemen came out looking for the quick goal, dominating the extra period and they nearly ended it on a shot by leading scorer Carlin, but it bounced off of the crossbar and just outside of the post. Luckily the freshman was able to redeem himself on the ensuing corner kick as he was able to get his head on the Sarratori boot and
put it past keeper Trevor Dyskstra exactly halfway through the first overtime to get the victory. “I just lost it for a second,” said Carlin. “I thought I had it but then I didn’t. I had to rebuild my confidence. It was super for my teammates and my coach to tell me to keep my head and don’t let myself down.” Carlin’s 20th goal of the season came at just the right time because it would nullify any possibility of going to penalty kicks, where anything can happen. “It was huge,” said Sarratori. “You never want to decide a game on penalty kicks. It doesn’t really show the true winner. They were putting pressure on us and to end it like that felt good.” Wilson will move on to play Class B1 winner East Aurora on Saturday (Nov. 1) to determine who will be the Section VI Class B overall winner that will take on the Section V representative in the Far West Regionals. The Lakemen will face the Blue Devils at Hamburg High School with a start time of 2:30 p.m.

Jordan Glosser, a Wilson graduate, is a key player for the NCCC volleyball team. “The majority of the years it’s a lot of local talent,” said Daigler. “There is a lot of local talent around here that could be playing at higher Division II or even possibly Division I schools. The cost of school is a factor for a lot of them. The last couple of years we have had a lot of great talent come through here for two years to save that money and they continue elsewhere.” Not only is it helpful to get local talent on the recruiting trail, but it is even more helpful when you are successful with that talent. At 16-9, this has been another stellar season for Daigler and it will certainly help him continue to get some of the top volleyball players in Niagara County for years to come. “It’s huge for the program,” said Daigler. “Between [ECC], Buffalo State, Medaille, D’Youville…they are all around the same talent level so going after the same talent in the area is tough. Establishing a good program and graduating three All-Americans in the last three years gives us a little bit of an edge when girls are thinking about where they want to play.” There is something unusual about the local talent on the squad this year as five players graduated from Wilson High School. Freshmen Allie Bubar, Miranda Newman and Alyssa Schlosser along with sophomores Anna Tuttle and first
team All-Western New York Athletic Conference pick Jordan Glosser all played for the Lakewomen in their run to back-to-back NiagaraOrleans League titles from 2012 to 2013. You often see former high school teammates play together at the collegiate level like the former Niagara Falls basketball duo of Jonny Flynn and Paul Harris did at Syracuse a few years ago, but it is almost unheard of to have five players from the same high school play together at the next level. “I am kind of glad,” said Glosser. “I love playing with my Wilson girls. I really missed it. I think we all get along. It’s not like all of the Wilson girls are together, we all hang out together.” It is not just Wilson that has contributed to the Thunderwolves’ success this season, as former Lew-Port graduate Morgan Boss, Starpoint’s Nicole Cyr, Grand Island’s Kassie Bennett and NiagaraWheatfield’s Leanne Wills are all wearing the blue and gold. When you have a team that has nine players that have played with or against each other at the high school level it contributes greatly to the continuity of the team. Not only are the players familiar off of the court, but they know where they will be on the court and what skills they bring to the table, which makes the college experience easier.
Starting libero Wills and Boss are perhaps more familiar with each other than any two players as they not only played against one another in the Niagara Frontier League, but they are cousins as well. “It’s really awesome, we’ve always played together,” said Wills. “Our high schools always played against each other and now it’s really cool to be on the same team. Our families like to come watch the games together so it’s really interesting.” Wills is the most local of all of the Thurnderwolves as she attended high school not even five minutes down the road. Not only does she get to play with some familiar faces, but playing in her home town allows her family and friends to watch all of her home games. “It’s like five minutes down the road,” said Wills. “So I’m constantly seeing people I know; which is a good adjustment. My cousin is on the team so that’s good too.” NCCC will play the biggest tournament of the season this weekend, starting Saturday (Nov. 1) with the NJCAA Division III Region III Championships as they try to earn a bid for the national championships in Rochester, MN. If they can advance, it will only enhance the amount of local talent that wants to play for the Thunderwolves for the next several years.
It’s common, just before embarking on a new venture, for someone to have that unmistakable combination of excitement and dread. The excitement comes from looking forward to the opportunity to try something unique and perhaps succeed beyond anyone’s expectations. The dread comes from the uncertainty about potential failure and being unable to perform the task at hand. That combination doesn’t seem to apply to Alex Wood, the interim head coach of the University at Buffalo football program. After finding himself on the losing end of a 20-14 score against Central Michigan in his first game at the helm last Saturday, the 59-year old came across as unflappable. Wood, you see, is a true football veteran. He had already logged 11 years of being an assistant coach at six different colleges when he took over as wide receivers coach with the Miami Hurricanes in 1989. Yep, those Miami Hurricanes, the team that won two national championships in Wood’s tenure there (in 1989 and 1991) and posted a perfect 12-0 record in claiming the second title.
The native of Massillon, Ohio (the birthplace of football, need you be reminded) eventually became a collegiate head coach at James Madison (from 1995 to 1998) and spent six years as an NFL assistant, including being offensive coordinator for the 2004 Arizona Cardinals. So, 12 days after replacing the fired Jeff Quinn at UB, Wood hardly seemed excited when asked if he was glad to finally get a game out of the way: “We’d much rather have won the game. It’s good to go play, absolutely, to go compete after the time off and the transition that took place.” His reaction to the loss itself, which crippled UB’s chances of a second straight bowl bid, was slightly more emotional: “It didn’t turn out the way we wanted it to. We still have a great deal to play for, and we’ll get our players ready to take on that challenge.” While Wood doesn’t have the distant and dismissive public demeanor of New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick (or the hockey world’s John Tortorella), he’s a far cry from giving off the frenetic energy of Quinn. I’m sure Wood gets as fired up as anyone when it comes to the inner workings of football, but after this many years of being around the game, it’s understandable that he won’t
make much of it available for display. That might be a good thing for UB right now. There were surely moments where Quinn’s breathlessness was exhausting. Wood appears to view the adversity of a 3-5 record as a learning experience while willingly caretaking a program which has embarked on a national search for its next head coach. Sure there was some awkwardness on Saturday, as the Bulls’ Senior Day ceremonies featured a head coach congratulating players with whom he never had total control. But if senior center Trevor Sales is any indication, the players have rallied around Wood and refuse to believe that 2014 has become a lost season. UB resumes its schedule next Tuesday with a prime-time matchup at Ohio. After that come two prime-time home games against Akron and Kent State, followed by a Black Friday tilt at UMass. “Our backs are up against the wall, but we’re not going to hide in the corner and cry about it,” Sales said. “I have four games left in my life to play. We’re going to come out swinging and we’re going to finish this thing strong. There’s going to be some fun ones to watch, so stay tuned.”

Courtney Mann had a special feeling about the University at Buffalo women’s soccer team all the way back in preseason training. She turned out to be right. UB clinched the MidAmerican Conference regular season championship last weekend with a 2-0 victory over Miami (Ohio). Mann, a Frontier graduate and fourth-year starter in the midfield, was one of eight seniors honored on the field at UB Stadium prior to the game. “What a tremendous accomplishment for the girls,” UB coach Shawn Burke said. “I am so
proud of their effort and to clinch against one of the top teams in the MAC says a lot about our team.” The Bulls (12-2-3, 8-0-2 MAC) will look to finish unbeaten in conference play for the first time ever when they host Akron on Thursday (Oct. 30). UB will enter the MAC championship tournament as the No. 1 seed and host a quarterfinal game Sunday at UB Stadium. Riding a nine-game unbeaten streak, UB has also jumped up to 47th in the NCAA Ratings Percentage Index, a high watermark for the program. “Our current RPI ranking is recognition for all their hard work and dedication to attain our ultimate goal of an NCAA
Tournament appearance,” Burke said. UB last won a MAC regular season title in 2000 but has never won the MAC tournament or qualified for the NCAA Tournament. Burke is in his first season as UB’s head coach after five seasons as an assistant. When Burke first joined the UB program after two years on the men’s staff at Canisius, he made recruiting Mann one of his first priorities. Mann, one of the Bulls senior captains, has provided steady leadership throughout the season. “In eight years of coaching in college, she is one of the best athletes I’ve worked with,” Burke said. “She literally never takes a day off. Not in
training, or in games. For the past four years, one centerpiece has been her being in that lineup every day.” Other locals on the UB roster included sophomore defender Rachel Cook (Williamsville South) and senior goalkeeper Sarah Moore (Orchard Park). Freshman goalkeeper Laura Dougall has a goals-against average of 0.36, a .915 saver percentage and 11 shutouts, ranking first in the MAC and in the top five nationally in all three categories. Sophomore Katie Roberts leads the MAC with 10 goals and 22 points. Celina Carrero has six goals, including three game-winners, and 17 points.

Bulls fall in Wood’s first game as head coach By Jonah Bronstein SPORTS REPORTER
Changing coaches couldn’t reverse the course of the University at Buffalo’s football season. And neither could a standout game from senior linebacker Adam Redden (St. Francis). After firing head coach
Jeff Quinn and promoting offensive coordinator Alex Wood, the Bulls had their worst offensive performance of the season Saturday in a 20-13 home loss to Central Michigan. UB (3-5, 1-3) has now lost three straight in the Mid-American Conference and must win its final four regular season games to become bowl eligible.
The Bulls gained just 38 yards rushing on the day. Running back Anthone Taylor had a season-low 25 yards after coming into the game ranked 10th in the country in rushing yards. “They rendered us to be one-dimensional offensively, and when that happens, it’s tough to win,” Woods said. Redden, who grew up in
Buffalo and Amherst, did his best to keep the Bulls in the game. The senior linebacker had 10 tackles (3.5 for loss), to sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery to earn MAC East defensive player of the week honors. Redden created a turnover on his first sack that led to UB’s first touchdown after the Bulls had fallen be-
hind 14-0 in the early going. A third-team all-MAC pick as a junior, Redden is on his way to earning allconference honors again this season. He leads the MAC in tackles for loss with 12 and is second with three forced fumbles. He has 55 tackles this year and a team-high five sacks. Quarterback Joe Licata (Williamsville South)
threw for 233 yards and two touchdowns Saturday. He passed Joe Freedy to move into fourth in school history with 5,994 career passing yards. The Bulls play next Wednesday at Ohio. UB’s remaining home games at both weeknight matchups, Nov. 11 against Akron and Nov. 19 against Kent State.
Bengals lose to Utica, need win this week to regain first place By Jonah Bronstein SPORTS REPORTER
The Buffalo State football team’s NCAA Tournament aspirations took a major hit Saturday with a home loss to Utica. Off to their best start since 1999 and sitting atop the Empire 8 standings for the first time, the Bengals turned the
ball over three times in the 31-21 loss. Buffalo State (5-2, 3-2) now visits nationally-ranked St. John Fisher needing a win to regain first place in the Empire 8 standings. The conference champion automatically qualifies for the NCAA Tournament. Another loss would also likely take the Bengals out of consideration for an at-large
berth. Mike Doherty (Kenmore East) led the Buffalo State offense with five catches for 165 yards and a 40-yard touchdown that gave the Bengals an early 7-0 lead. Utica went up 24-7 by halftime before John Alessandra (Kenmore East) recovered a fumble that led to a Rich Pete touchdown, bringing the Bengals within
10 points. Quarterback Kyle Hoppy (Orchard Park) fumbled on Buffalo State’s next possession, however, and Utica would take advantage of the opportunity to push its lead up to 31-14. Dan Serignese relieved Hoppy at quarterback in the fourth quarter and connected with Doherty on a 50-yard gain before finding Ryan
Carney (Olean) for an 8-yard touchdown pass that brought the Bengals within 31-21 with 7:16 remaining. But Buffalo State couldn’t get any closer, and in the process, gave up pole position in the Empire 8 title race. St. John Fisher, coached by Lockport native Paul Vosburgh, is coming off a 61-0 win over Alfred State. James Chambers (Lockport) scored
his third touchdown of the season in the win, and Sammy Hasan (Williamsville South) recovered a fumble in the end zone for a score. The Cardinals are ranked 15th in the latest D3football. com poll. Buffalo State is no longer receiving any votes after getting top 25 consideration the past two weeks.

Lawmakers donate to PB&J Drive “This is a good reminder of why we’re here.” That’s how Niagara County Legislature Majority Leader Rick Updegrove, R-Lockport, explained what has become an annual tradition to a pair of new lawmakers Tuesday: the donation, by Majority Caucus legislators, of a heaping portion of peanut butter and jelly to boost the local Peanut Butter & Jelly Drive. “We are here to improve our community, and to support the people who work every day toward that goal,” Updegrove said. “The Peanut Butter & Jelly Drive turns five this year, and it has become a local charitable effort we should all be proud of. Along the way, it’s helped thousands of people.” Updegrove and Legislator Wm. Keith McNall, RLockport, welcomed the volunteers at thecore of the Peanut Butter & Jelly Drive Tuesday night, presenting them with a proclamation declaring November “Peanut Butter & Jelly Month” in Niagara County. Majority Caucus lawmakers also donated 11 dozen jars of sandwich spreads: six dozen jars of peanut butter, equally divided between creamy and chunky, three dozen jars of grape jelly, and two dozen jars of strawberry jam. Lawmakers showing personal support for the PB&J Drive has become an annual fall tradition in Niagara County. Updegrove and his colleagues embraced the unique food drive in its second year, when he, McNall, and Legislator Tony Nemi, R-Lockport, made a surprise donation of six dozen jars of peanut butter andjelly to support the drive. Since then, support for the drive has been a rite of passage in the Majority Caucus, with Republican lawmakers expected to each make a sizeable donation to the local effort. It also has, in some years, provoked goodnatured competitionbetween

Volunteers and county lawmakers surround Niagara County Legislature Majority Leader Rick Updegrove, R-Lockport, and Peanut Butter & Jelly Drive organizer Tina Sheley after Niagara County declared November Peanut Butter & Jelly Month. the Legislature’s Majority and Minority, with the two groups vying to show more generosity to the drive. “The Peanut Butter & Jelly Drive keeps food that children like on the shelves of our local food pantries, and we wanted to recognize them tonight for proving, five years in a row, that good people can make the world better,” McNall said. “Making our caucus’s donation to the Peanut Butter & Jelly Drive is one of the truly satisfying things we do every year, because it’s good to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with neighbors who are making good things happen for both people they know and total strangers.” One of the major forces behind the drive has been New York State Courts Sgt. Pete Robinson, who helped organize the inaugural drive and every year’s collection since. Robinson was on hand Tuesday night at the Niagara County Courthouse. “People want to be a part of something that they can
see the fruit of their labor,” Robinson said in a recent interview in East Niagara Post. “You can make a change one jar at a time ... like our logo says, ‘spread the love.’” That message resonated with freshman legislators Randy R. Bradt and Richard L. Andres, both of North Tonawanda, who made what they both said they hope will be the first of many donations Tuesday. “As a social studies teacher, I try to instill in my students that they can make the world a better place, but they need to start with their own communities,” Andres said after handing a dozen jars of grape jelly over to Robinson. “The Peanut Butter & Jelly Drive proves that’s true. It was a real honor to get to talk with these great volunteers.” The Peanut Butter & Jelly Drive will continue through Dec. 6. Individuals interested in learning more can visit the Drive’s Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/ groups/peanutbutterandjellydrive/.
Lawmakers also urged county residents to do what they can to support the drive, pausing for a bi-partisan photo with PB&J Drive volunteers to promote the event. Individuals interested in supporting the drive are invited to stop by the Niagara County Clerk’s Office in the Courthouse, 175 Hawley St., Lockport, or any of the following sites (a full listing of collection sites is available on the Peanut Butter & Jelly Drive Facebook page): Niagara County Sheriff’s Office Niagara County Department of Health Lockport City Hall North Tonawanda Parks & Recreation Niagara County Community College Administration Building Niagara University Middleport Village Offices Hartland Town Hall Royalton Town Hall Newfane Town Hall Information on the drive is also available by calling Robinson at 510-7108.

Ken-East band director in running for Grammy Award By: Lauren Kirchmyer It has been said that Kenmore East High School has one of the best music programs around, and the students and faculty of the school point to Phil Aguglia as the reason why. “I was one of those awkward kids who didn’t really fit into a lot of places,” Aguglia said. “I struggled a lot but it was through band that I found a place. It became part of who I was.” He started taking trumpet lessons, an instrument his dad played, in fifth grade at Southside Elementary School in Buffalo. During his sophomore year at Hutchinson Central Technical High School, his band director allowed him to work with and help other students. Seeing his peers succeed because of his help filled him with satisfaction. “No matter what my personal successes were, I felt more accomplished when people I worked with did well. That’s why I wanted to be a teacher,” Aguglia said. He went on to receive a bachelor’s in music education from Ithaca College and a master’s in music with a focus in education from SUNY Fredonia. He taught in Massachusetts, followed by West Valley, before making his back to Western New York to teach middle and high school band for Cleveland Hill Union Free School District in Cheektowaga.

“He took a program that was in its infancy with very basic skills and turned them into a very respected band and music program in Western New York, all on his own,” said Joseph Greco, who started with Aguglia at Cleveland Hill around 1997 and currently is the assistant principal at Kenmore East High School. “He put in hours after school, weekends, working with kids for extremely long hours.” And his ways haven’t changed. In 2002, Aguglia moved to Kenmore East. His workday starts at 7 a.m. and sometimes goes until 10 p.m. He is in charge of wind ensemble, concert band, three jazz bands, two jazz combos, several small chamber groups, individual lessons as well as pep band. He puts in around 70 hours each week. He will even work on week-
ends and during the summer to make sure his students are getting the best music education. “The way he teaches things is indescribable,” said Isabelle Bertino, a senior at Kenmore West High School. “You’re not just learning something you have to memorize, he makes sure you can understand it, which is what a lot of teachers are not capable of doing.” Last year, the Recording Academy and the Grammy Foundation introduced the Grammy Music Educator Award. It only takes one nomination to apply for the award. Aguglia received about 60 nomination emails, but he didn’t pursue. When the competition opened for 2015, Aguglia’s email was flooded with nominations once again and he decided to

give it a chance. This year about 30,000 people were nominated for the award. Approximately 7,000 people followed the link in the email to fill out the application. From there, 222 music educators from around the country were selected for the quarterfinals. Aguglia is now one of only 25 people who remain in the competition. Aguglia made sure to include the entire school in his nomination process in return. When he found out he was one of 25 who remained in the competition, he had to film videos answering questions about why he was deserving of the award. Besides showing video clips and pictures of his students past and present, Aguglia shared in his videos how he brings in guest artists, allows his students to perform throughout Western New York and travel to places like Las Vegas and Disney World, recruits students through unique programs, proposes ideas to the school district to receive new instruments, and is involved with charitable and educational organizations such as Music is Art. He even had busloads of students collect instruments and volunteer in New Orleans, La. after Hurricane Katrina hit. Should he win the Grammy Award, he would receive a $10,000 honorarium. Kenmore East’s Music Department would receive $6,000 through the Ford Drive 4 UR School program and a $10,000 grant, allowing Aguglia to start an artist in residence program at the school and let the students work with a mentor, a professional from the music industry.

Cornell Co-op Extension announces 2014 awards
The 4-H Training Center auditorium on Cornell Cooperative Extension of Niagara County’s (“CCE”) grounds in Lockport was the location for CCE’s Annual Meeting and Farm to Table Dinner. This farm to table event was attended by 130 local dignitaries, 4-H families and local citizens who wanted to learn more about CCE while enjoying local foods and wines. The Walker Junior Leadership Award is given in memory of Raymond R. Walker and Marjorie E. Walker. Raymond was a project leader while Marjorie was the Head Leader of the Hartland Hotshots. This year the award was presented to Zack Alt, 16, of Newfane. With his passion for the 4-H Program and agriculture, Alt has participated in a variety of leadership roles. He is a member of the 4-H Ambassadors and Dairy Cattle Club. for more than five years, and who has made a contribution to the 4-H Program. This year’s award winner was Connie Zimicki of Lockport. Zimicki grew up as a member of the 4-H equine program and when her children were old enough to show ten years ago, she started the Northeast Herd 4-H Club. She continues as leader of the club today, even though her children have graduated from 4-H. Zimicki is a member of the Niagara County 4-H equine committee and was instrumental in remodeling and reopening the Equine Food booth and restrooms. Zimicki is the organizer and administrator of the Equine 5-star program each year, which tests a 4-H’ers continuing knowledge of horses thru their years in 4-H. The 4-H Leadership Award is presented each year to a leader who has been a volunteer with the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Niagara County for five years or less, and who has made a contribution to the 4-H Program. This year’s leadership award winner is Barb Stevens of Wilson. As the assistant leader for the 4-H county dog program, Stevens has helped many 4-H’ers learn about dog obedience, showmanship and was instrumental in getting the rally program started. She has been the constant needed to keep the county dog program running.

The 4-H Family of the Year award is presented in memory of John A. Hall, his wife Lorraine and his daughter Betty for leadership and dedication to 4-H work in Niagara County. This year the Randall family of Cambria was selected for their sheer dedication to 4-H over the years as well as their involvement in many of the Niagara County 4-H programs. This year will be the third generation of this 4-H family to receive this award. The grandparents won the award in 1966. And the great grandparents won the award in the early 1940’s. eral Niagara County 4-H programs. Josh, 15, and Ashley, 14, are members of the Sour Patch Club participating in 4-H consumer science programs entering those exhibits in the youth building at the Niagara County Fair and NY State Fair. In the animal science area they both participate in the equine program competing in county, regional and state horse shows, hippology and they both have received stars in the equine 5-star program. Both children can be found at almost any horse work-bee, horse camp, horse meeting, setting up for shows, helping in the equine office or working as part of the ring crew. Karen, the mother of this family, is a member of the Niagara County 4-H Equine Committee, the 4-H Region 1 committee and the NYS 4-H Equine committee. On the county level she is an instructor for the horse bowl program and the Hippology program, helping many 4-H’ers to learn more about their horses and how to care for them. She is also the show secretary at local county and regional shows. Mark Randall is always supportive and helping the children with their woodworking, electrical and vegetable projects, along with helping at all the horse shows and work-bees. The Gertrude Warren Leadership Award is presented each year to a leader who has been a volunteer with CCE Niagara County
