City twinkles once again By Mery Dorr

NT SUN CORRESPONDENT

A crowd of about 100 people gathered for a conversation with author Lauren Belfer in the City of Tonawanda library Saturday, Oct. 11. The author has penned two novels; however the focus

of the gathering was on the authors’ first novel “City of Light.” The novel is a historical fiction that showcases Pan American Buffalo and the technological revolution that occurred in the city in the early 1900s. Belfer was raised in the 1970s in the height of the economic de-

pression in Buffalo. After a lifetime of being unmotivated by the city she was raised in, it was serendipitous that the author was inspired to write “City of Light.” The novel took six years to research and write. On Saturday it took the author about 30 minutes to give the audi-

ence a visual and oral tour of her inspiration and the effort it took for her to gather material. Belfer described how she was inspired to include additional characters as she unearthed articles and accounts of influential people during Pan American Buffalo. Along with her husband Michael Marissen, who manned the visual equipment, Belfer showcased pictures of famous, and some forgotten, significant Buffalonians. She included slides of Buffalo architecture, some of which made it into the novel. The audience laughed at Belfer’s story of how she spontaneously received a tour of the Coatsworth mansion, after approaching someone moving into the home. Belfer pointed out Mary Talbert was only known to her for the housing project with her namesake in Buffalo. During her research, Belfer re-discovered Talbert and her contributions to the city and was inspired to write her into the novel. Belfert now lives in New York City; she explained much of her research was done at the library. She explained the libraries, both in New York City and Buffalo, are loaded with information about Buffalo and the surrounding area. While researching in Buffalo she did venture outside to find existing hints of historical Buffalo. She said, “The old city is all around us.” The slides showed the transformation of majes-

Lauren Belfer at the City of Tonawanda library. tic mansions and parks into parking lots and highways. Belfer also pointed out existing structures that hint to Buffalo’s regal past. On West Ferry Street the red brick wall that once fenced in the Albright estate now stands among a cluster of homes. Librarian Betsy Higgins invited the author to speak at the library. Higgins explained “City of Light” was published in 1999, making it really old in book years, but it still gets checked out. Higgins described Belfer as an advocate for libraries. She said, “She really does her homework. She goes to the NY public library. When

she comes to Buffalo, she goes to the downtown library; she goes to the historical society library, so she really uses libraries. It comes out in her books, she knows her stuff. She is very informed.” Belfer’s first short story was published after 43 rejections and her second after 27 rejections. Belfer credits her tenacity to her Buffalo roots. She joked that in Buffalo she learned to never give up and always keep going, akin to the city itself. Belfer believes the city of Buffalo is rejuvenated and once again the twinkling city of light.

Record fundraiser secures the future of assistance for families

A record setting fundraiser has secured the future of tuition assistance and scholarships for the families of St. John the Baptist School, 1085 Englewood Ave., Kenmore. Over $34,000 was raised at this year’s annual Scramble Golf Tournament and Scholarship Dinner. While other schools are cutting scholarships and tuition assistance, these proceeds will allow St. John’s to continue its commitment to help their families in order to make the choice of a Catholic education possible. One parent who receives assistance explained, “Although my husband and I both work very hard, we are ‘that family’ that ‘rides the line’ and struggles to keep current on the mortgage, utility payments, etc. Without this assistance, my children would not be able to attend St. John’s. It’s a miracle and an investment in my child’s future.” Each year, the school receives numer-

ous applications for financial aid. Principal Cynthia Jacobs said the impact from this event is, “Simply incredible. I am very grateful to be able to assist our families in this way. We’ve been doing for a decade now. I am humbled by the loyalty of all who have supported us for years and invigorated by the enthusiastic first timers. This event is testimony to the vitality of the St. John’s community.” In addition to financial aid, a portion of the proceeds will be dedicated to the Mary E. Kirwan Catholic Education Scholarship Fund, established in honor of the founder of the event, Mary E. Kirwan. A $1,000 scholarship is awarded annually to a student in sixth or seventh grade who has been nominated by the faculty for noteworthy service to the community and academic performance. The winner of this scholarship will be announced in spring 2015.

Ken-Ton Meals on Wheels gears up for Thanksgiving dinners By KImberlee Sabshin NT SUN CORRESPONDENT

In preparation for another holiday season of serving the Ken-Ton community, several local service organizations will work with Ken-Ton Meals on Wheels to ensure those in need will have a Thanksgiving dinner complete with perennial staples. The Ken-Ton Kiwanis, Kenmore Lions, the Town of Tonawanda Youth, Parks and Recreation Department and the Zonta Club of Kenmore are helping Meals on Wheels, which delivers meals to seniors with limited mobility. As the holidays approach, they are collecting turkeys and pies from the community, with a goal of receiving 50 turkeys and 80 pies. “[Town Supervisor Anthony Caruana] stops by every year to see how we are doing, and [Councilman] Dan Crangle has volunteered,” Dan Wiles, executive director of Ken-Ton Meals on Wheels,

said. “Their support is excellent, and they are grateful the service clubs do this program. As for the residents, the support in terms of donations and volunteering is excellent, and I know firsthand the recipients are grateful.” All turkeys must be received by 4 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 13, and should be dropped off at the town Youth, Parks and Recreation Department office at 299 Decatur Rd., between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. All donated pies should be delivered between noon and 4 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 26, to St. Andrew’s Church at 1525 Sheridan Drive in Kenmore. Turkeys must be between 15 and 16 pounds so they will fit in small ovens and cook at the same rate. Last year, KenTon Meals on Wheels was able to provide 400 meals, including some at a public dinner at McNulty Hall in St. Andrew’s Church on Sheridan Drive. Mike Rizzo, of Banchetti by Rizzo’s in Am-

herst, donates the equipment and helps cook turkeys at his restaurant, and St. Andrew’s donates the kitchen and hall, Wiles said. “The Ken-Ton Kiwanis and Kenmore Lions donated $400 apiece and volunteered the day before and the day of. The Zonta Club of Kenmore donated $250,” Wiles said of the group effort from last year. “Other residents donated money or turkeys or pies.” Wiles, who initially began working with Ken-Ton Meals as a volunteer driver, is also an active member of the Kiwanis, a Big Brother, and a Special Olympics coach, and said he has introduced his own children to Ken-Ton Meals on Wheels so “they would see how lucky we are and they would learn to volunteer,” he said. “I want my kids to get the same joy out of giving back that everyone who volunteers experiences…I’m honored the folks who ran this for years asked me to spearhead it, and I en-

joy it immensely.” In order to locate seniors who are in need of the program’s services, Ken-Ton Meals on Wheels will send notices to local senior housing locations, churches and the Ensminger Senior Center, and will also offer meals to all Ken-Ton Meals on Wheels clients. The Thanksgiving turkey program initially began “decades ago as an Eagle Scout program,” Wiles said, until the Sertoma Club took over and “did it for over 20 years.” “I am proud that we serve over 83,000 meals a year to neighbors in need and we provide those meals to them at a cost lower than our operating cost. We make up the difference with fund raisers and community donations (service clubs, annual fund drive),” Wiles said. “Our local and county governments are very supportive and we could not operate at such a low cost without support of the Town of Tonawanda.”

Plan to raise elected officials salaries not supported Recently the Citizens Salary Review Commission released its report, calling for salary increases for the county executive, comptroller, sheriff and clerk. It was the first report since 2004 and analyzed the fact that elected officials’ salaries hadn’t been raised since 1996. I think the Commission did a thorough job and I want to thank the members for the time they committed to creating their recommendations. The total increase would be $77,305 annually and the commission said the increases would bring Erie County on par with comparable counties. The following increases were recommended: county executive - $103,248 to $126,400, a 22 percent increase; sheriff - $79,092 to $102,400, a 29 percent increase; comptroller - $80,613 to $98,750, a 22 percent increase; and the clerk - $79,092 to $91,800, a 16 percent increase. It was recommended that the legislators’ salaries remain the same. After the report was released, I joined my colleagues in the Majority Caucus in issuing a statement that we opposed the recommendations and that we would vote against increases. I believe that now is not the appropriate time to raise elected officials’ salaries. While I believe there is some merit to certain points made in the report, my decision to not raise the salaries is because of the taxpayers who would fund them. I have met many families who are struggling, making the same wage they have for

years because our local economy is not strong. Businesses are fighting to stay open and as a result, workers are impacted. I have also met many residents who were forced to switch jobs, start over and take a cut in pay just to find work. Right now, to raises the salaries of elected officials would be imprudent. We pay some of the highest taxes in the country and Erie County’s economy continues to struggle. A recent report on poverty shows we have a long way to go to recover. Right now, elected officials should not receive a salary increase. Many residents have reached out to me, voicing their opinion about this topic. To date, everyone I have heard from opposes the raises. The Legislature’s Majority Caucus wants to ensure we provide ample opportunity for residents to weigh in before we vote. A public forum will be held soon to provide residents that platform. As soon as the date and location are finalized, we will be announcing the details. You can also send your comments to me at ted.morton@erie.gov or directly to the Clerk of the Legislature at 92 Franklin St., Buffalo, NY 14202, where they will be part of the official record. If you have any questions about the Citizens Salary Review Commission’s recommendations or another county matter, please contact me at 858-8856. Erie County Legislator Ted Morton

A Democrat supporting Ortt Recently there has been a series of letters in several newspapers in support of Johnny Destino for State Senate. Their general theme has been guilt by association of Rob Ortt because he is a republican. The letters mention the “debacle in Lockport,” Steve Richards, and George Maziarz’s resignation, yet they fail to mention the halting of the campaign investigation of irregularities by the democrats Cuomo and Schneiderman. The letters say they’re not “antiOrtt.” Oh Well! The infer-

ence is that we should be suspicious and question Ortt’s integrity, yet they fail to mention Ortt’s military service to his country in defense of our freedom. Nor do they mention Destino’s change of party affiliation to suit his political aspirations. In another letter some of the Republican Party’s chairmen mention the tax rate in North Tonawanda versus Lockport and Niagara Falls, but fail to compare the progress that has been made under Ortt’s leadership. Nor did they mention the life support

the city of Niagara Falls is on from the casino, or that Lockport needs to borrow money to provide standard civic services. One of the non-mentions is that Destino has never governed anything, as has Ortt, but they conveniently omit that. Another letter alludes to Destino’s support of education. While I’m sure that Destino is good man, I don’t know where it’s said that being a supporter of education is what qualifies one for leadership at the state senate level. Lastly, it would be to-

tally naïve to think that if the democrats gain control of the senate, in addition to the assembly that they already basically own, that it won’t affect what upstate and Western New York receive in financial assistance from state government. I’m a life-long democrat, but this time I have to think of what I believe is best for my home and community, and that means supporting Rob Ortt for state senate. Karl E. Bauer North Tonawanda

John Leguizamo premieres new show in Buffalo By: Lauren Kirchmyer John Leguizamo’s work has appeared various times across stage and screen. His roles have landed him Emmy and ALMA Awards, and nominations for Golden Globes and Tony Awards to name a few. His oneman shows have gone from Broadway stages to HBO specials. His voice has been heard by billions of people around the world in the “Ice Age” franchise, he has appeared in numerous television shows and feature films, and he still has time for his wife and children. Though next week hee will be back in a recordding studio, working onn the fifth “Ice Age” film, m, Leguizamo has put timee aside to come to Buffaloo this weekend to perform m four shows for local fans ns at Helium Comedy Club. “People will be entertained, and they’re going to learn something,” Leguizamo said. “My stuff is always pretty out there and daring if I do say so myself.” Those who attend his performances are in for a treat as Leguizamo is premiering his brand new show. “Buffalo is the first place I’m trying it out at,” he said. “I’m curious to see how people relate to the subject matter – the jokes, inappropriateness and intellectual aspect of it.” Performances begin at 7:30 and 10:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17 and Saturday, Oct. 18 at Helium Comedy Club, located at 30 Mississippi St. in Buffalo.

Leguizamo guizam lloves performing for live audiences because of the immediate feedback he receives. “When a union happens between me and the audience, all of a sudden the show goes places I never thought it would go. They inspire me,” he said. “This is the rawest and most organic dialogue I have. I love the possibility that anything can occur.” Besides acting, Leguizamo is an avid writer. He released an autobiography in 2006 through Harper Collins and created multiple awardwinning one-man shows, performed in Chicago and both on- and off-Broadway in New York City. “There is always something burning in me, a passionate

question or a quest, something I couldn’t deal with and needed to learn how to deal with,” he explained. He truly felt like a “legit writer” however when his show “Spic-O-Rama” won a playwriting award through Warner Hall. Leguizamo performed his one-man show “Ghetto Klown” on Broadway in 2011, and it is now available on HBO on Demand. Through this show, he learned to forgive, let go and move on. He recently revisited this show and plans to release a graphic novel of “Ghetto Klown” next year through Abrams Books. “The artist I got for the novel captures the reality of the story and then elevates it further,” Leguizamo said.

“It takes you other places. It travels through 40 years of my life, different countries and cities and time zones and cultures. Now it’s all visualized.” Leguizamo has learned many times in his career if you don’t accept defeat and keep your eyes on the prize, you will find success. He didn’t expect his show “Freak” to go to Broadway, and then it received an Emmy award and several other nominations. Fox didn’t imagine “Ice Age” to be a box-office sensation, now no there are toys, video games and multiple movga ies i for the franchise. ie “It “ was magic to do. We “I had ha so much fun,” he said about the first “Ice Age” ab film. “The movie came out and saved Fox for the fourth quarter of the year financially. It was a crazy surprise.” Besides being excited to play the lovable sloth “Sid” and start on his next film, Leguizamo is anxious for the upcoming Nov. 7 release of a film he wrote titled “Fugly.” The film – about a guy who grows up ugly, improves himself in college, attempts to be the “Don Juan” character but always finds himself fallings in love – will be available on iTunes and Video On Demand. To keep up with Leguizamo and his momentous career, follow him on Twitter (@ JohnLeguizamo). To learn more about his show taking place this weekend, visit www.heliumcomedy.com/ buffalo.

Ken West’s Ford has record-setting day as Falcons fall to Blue Devils

By Dave Ricci SPORTS REPORTER

A title won and a record tied. Terrell Ford further etched himself into the Kenmore West record books by scoring five touchdowns as the Blue Devils breezed to a 56-0 win over Niagara-Wheatfield in Section VI Class AA North football action that was played at Crosby Field, Saturday afternoon. The win clinches the AA North title for the Blue Devils (4-0, 4-2) for the third time in the past four seasons. KenWest won it in 2011 and 2012. Last season Class AA North and South were merged into one division. Coach Rich Harris said that even after his team dropped the first two games of the season to Williamsville South and Orchard Park, he never lost faith in his young squad and said it was just a matter of his players getting to know each other. “It was a learning curve.

It was a learning process,” said Harris. “It’s tough to get guys ready when you only have a couple returners. But you know what, we’re Kenmore West. We keep filing in every year and it’s just a matter of getting them a little bit of experience and we get better all season long. It’s really coming true for this football team.” Ford, who rushed for 125 yards on nine carries, was the Blue Devils’ offensive star of the day as his five touchdowns tied the record that was set by his older brother, James Mallory, who did it against Williamsville East in 2004. “Oh yeah. It was a special day,” Ford said with a smile. “I wasn’t expecting to do it... It’s an accomplishment tying my big brother.” Sam Gagliardi, Tim Hersey and Martin Bailey also share the record of five rushing TD’s in one game. Ford scored on a 35-yard punt return and on TD runs of 70, 5, 14 and 7 yards. Ford’s 14-yard run helped Ken West take a 35-0 lead

Niagara-Wheatfield QB Andy Doricko was 10 for 13 for 100 yards in the Falcons’ loss to Ken West. into halftime. Ford, who had a 2-point play as well, also ties Martin Bailey for most post (32) in a single game. Bailey set the record in 2010 against Williamsville North.

Ford took charge on the opening kick off when the Falcons kicked to Trent White, who caught the ball, then lateraled it to Ford who blazed upfield for a 50-yard

gain. DeAngelo Walker (7 for 11 for 125 yards) would connect with White on a 30yard TD catch on the very next play. White had two receptions for 35 yards and goes into next week’s game against Kenmore East just 13 yards shy of the Blue Devils’ record for receiving yards in a career. White set the alltime receptions mark in last week’s win at Williamsville North. Charlie Milks had 12 tackles and two sacks to lead a Blue Devils defense that held the Falcons (0-4,0-6) to -5 yards rushing. “I love those wrestlers. They don’t miss many tackles,” Harris said. Falcons QB Andy Doricko was 10 for 13 for 100 yards with Brian Leising being his favorite target, catching five passes for 77 yards. Coach Brent Tylec said his team has shown extraordinary character by sticking together and working through a very challenging season. “It hasn’t changed their outlook. They still ask ques-

tions. They still want to know what worked, what didn’t. What they can do differently,” said Tylec. “Put in that time in practice working on their craft. Like I said, putting in the time in practice that’s something that a lot of lesser teams would choose to pass on. Let’s go through the motions and get it over with on Saturday. But that’s not at all the attitude of our guys, which it a testament to type of players we have out here.” Harris gave a tip of the hat to the Falcons and appreciated the fact that they brought an honest, stand up effort. “They deserve some credit. I know they’ve had a tough season. I give them all the credit in the world,” said Harris. “They played clean. They kept their composure today, which is hard.” Jamir Lynch had a pair of second-half touchdowns for Ken West, highlighted by a fumble recovery he took 76 yards for the score. The Blue Devils will face the Bulldogs in the Battle of Kenmore at 2 p.m. on Oct. 18 at Sparky Adams Field.

Football Friday: Falcons aim to find end zone, win column in final game of regular season heading into the final week of the regular seaSPORTS REPORTER son, there is still plenty to play for in this contest. the last three games and have lost by a combined score of 150-0; in fact the Falcons have only scored one touchdown all season long. Lew-Port has struggled this year also, as the Lancers have lost four consecutive games after starting the season 2-0.

If N-W is going to come out with a victory, it will obviously have to get the connection of Andrew Doricko and Brian Leising working and will have to run the ball better with KJ Welch and Keith Pittner. Defensively, the Falcons must eliminate the deep ball, as Drew Al-

lender has thrown for eight touchdown passes this year and his favorite target has been speedster Michael Fritz, who is averaging close to 17 yards per catch. A win can go a long way for the Niagara-Wheatfield football program, considering that it would

avoid a third straight winless regular season and it would end a regular season losing streak of 22 games. It would also give the team some momentum heading into the final two Chuck Funke Bowl games, both of which the Falcons won last year.

Starpoint golf sustains another dominant season By Nick Sabato SPORTS REPORTER

Imagine never losing a game or a match…ever. That is what the Starpoint golf team is looking at as this year’s group of seniors has never lost a match. To be accurate, the Spartans have won 39 consecutive team matches over the last four years and have dominated the ECIC in that time span. “It’s pretty cool,” said Starpoint co-captain Nick Larson. “It’s nice but this year we have had to work pretty hard for it.” Larson is one of three seniors on the squad this year and has averaged a 43 for the year, which places him second on the team. While he has been a fouryear stalwart for the Spartans, his love for the links goes back even further to when he served as the team manager in seventh and eighth grade. “I like that it is almost all on you,” said Larson. “I just like playing. It’s fun.” Golf is the ultimate individual sport, as many professionals will say that they are playing against themselves, rather than an opponent. When you factor in that sentiment along with the pressure that comes with winning nearly 40 matches in a row, it can weigh heavily on anybody. “We all have our bad matches now and then,” said senior Evan Lemma. “While at times you know you are going to do well and beat the other

team, other times it’s mentally stressful.” Larson and Lemma are joined by co-captain and lead golfer Sean Brown as the senior leaders on the team. Brown, a fifth-year player, leads Starpoint with an average of 42 and was just one match away as an eighth grader from being unblemished for his entire career. When a team exhibits such dominance over a long period of time, it is only natural for it to house friendly competitions between players on the team rather than with opponents. “Absolutely,” Lemma said of competing with his teammates. “To be honest, I think we compete with our teammates more than against other teams. It’s a lot of fun to play with these guys.” While Starpoint head coach Dave Schopf boasts three experienced seniors, he also has a number of younger players on the team. The Spartans have three juniors in Noah Day, Jake Brown and Brandon Joslin, but they also have three players that are still in middle school. They have two eighth graders in second-year player Connor MacDonald and Braden Zdrojewski, along with seventh grader Joe Dell’oso. In a tradition that was started when a senior took Sean Brown under his wing, the seniors have done the same with the underclassmen this year. They often pair up with one of the younger players in matches to help them navigate the stress and mental pressure on the course. “Sean [Brown] knew the process,” said Schopf. “This year, Sean has assumed that leadership role and worked with the younger kids and so has [Larson]. They have

DAN HICKLING

Senior Sean Brown, who averaged 42 this year, has spent five seasons on Starpoint’s golf team. both done a great job of being willing to work with the younger kids and help them as much as they can. It’s almost like it just keeps going from one season to the next where the seniors assume that role. They have done a great job with that and hopefully it continues next year.” In an individual sport, sometimes it helps to add the team element and to add a calming influence to an inexperienced

player, which is exactly why Schopf pairs his older players with younger players. This is especially helpful on the road, when one of the younger players may not have played at a particular course. “I think it’s a great idea to help them play like that,” said Schopf. “When we are going to a golf course where the younger kids have not played, Sean and Nick have played there three or four times so

they have that experience and they share that experience with the younger kids.” Starpoint has one team match remaining, as each of the division winners in the ECIC will square off to determine an overall champion. Should the Spartans win the match, Brown, Larson and Lemma will finish their careers a perfect 40-0, which is something that all players and coaches dream of in any

sport. “It’s a blessing,” said Schopf. “I knew the teams were good in the past, but this year’s team I wasn’t quite sure about. This team has worked really hard at getting better. Sean and Nick I knew were going to be good but the other kids have had to really work at it. It’s a credit to them that they are willing to put in the hard work and it paid off this year.”
