I guess so.” Calling Buffalo home for 17 years now, the Rigney

Three things not to do in 2015 (NAPSI)—It is not surprising that most New Year’s resolutions revolve around health and financial matters, two areas that emerged as key priorities for Americans in Northwestern Mutual’s 2014 Planning and Progress Study. The study underscored the need for better decision making, with 60 percent of Americans stating that their financial planning needs improvement and more than half admitting that they do not feel financially secure. Moreover, with longevity and costs increasing at a steady pace, there is also likely heightened pressure to prepare for the future, especially considering that, per Bankrate research, one-third of American workers have no retirement savings whatsoever. However, as the saying goes, “the best laid plans of mice and men often go astray,” and New Year’s resolutions seem to prove the point. A recent Forbes magazine poll found that only 8 percent of Americans actually succeed in keeping their resolutions. In fact, a different survey showed that more than 10 percent of New Year’s resolutions don’t even make it to the Super Bowl. “While the new year is a logical starting point for new endeavors, resolutions likely have a high fail rate because people tend to set lofty, unrealistic expectations or view change as a short-term goal,” said Rebekah Barsch, vice president of planning at Northwestern Mutual. “Life is a marathon, not a sprint, and people would be better served to change their mind-set from New Year’s resolutions to solutions for a lifetime.” According to Barsch, building solid financial habits that last requires broadly changing

overall attitudes, which will then shape ongoing decision making across a broad range of financial matters. To that end, instead of a “to do” list, Barsch suggests the following “don’t” list as a foundation for improving long-term financial well-being: • Don’t put off important conversations— Northwestern Mutual research shows that Americans would rather discuss death and intimacy than money. Overcoming this discomfort is essential, as open dialogue with partners, loved ones and professionals is the foundation for effective financial planning. And the benefits of planning are clear. According to Northwestern Mutual’s 2014 Planning and Progress Study, disciplined financial planners feel substantially more financially secure than those who consider themselves informal or nonplanners. • Don’t put all your eggs in one basket— While Northwestern Mutual research shows that most Americans over 25 (67 percent) have a savings account, just a fraction own stocks, bonds and real estate. Considering a wide range of solutions to meet financial and lifestyle objectives can play an important role in strengthening overall financial security. • Don’t pass poor financial habits to your children—A strong motivation to improve your own financial behaviors is to set a positive example for your kids as early as possible. Good and bad habits have one thing in common-the earlier they start, the harder they are to break. Themint.org and themintgrad. org have information, tools and resources to help younger children and millennials, respectively, enhance their money smarts.

Local sports CSAT embraces team-first mentality FC Buffalo wins tourney

By Dave Ricci SPORTS REPORTER

It’s coming sooner than later. At the start of the season, coach Lindsay Bergman said she wanted to foster a teamfirst mentality within the team circle of her Charter School for Applied Technology girls basketball team. Her Lady Eagles truly did play with the mindset that the name on the front and the success of the girl next to you was more important than your own wants and needs. “The girls are doing really well and really taking to the team-first mentality,” said Berg-

man, who is in her first season coaching the Lady Eagles. “We have gotten some great compliments on how far the girls have come.” CSAT dropped its opener to Immaculata, but then went on a nice three-game winning streak, knocking off Lackawanna, Global Concepts and Royalton-Hartland for its first win this season in the Niagara Orleans League. The Eagles returned from holiday break on Jan. 6 when they fell to Wilson, 44-42, in a nail-biter that went down to the last possession. While obviously disappointed that the Eagles lost, Bergman said that she felt her team can, and did, take a measure of pride by hanging with the defending Section VI Class B2 champion Lakewomen. More than the way the Eagles hung with Wilson on the scoreboard, Bergman said the most

encouraging part of the game was the energy and excitement from the players, how they cheered for their teammates and how they were genuinely a part of every single second of the game. “I think the Wilson game showed how important it was for the girls to get through the good and the bad together,” Bergman said. “Seeing how we were up in the game and then we had to come back, seeing everyone being a part of it whether they were in the game or on the bench.” The Lady Eagles have primarily gone with the starting five of Chelsea Carrier, Renazja Harris, Mia Jones, Jordan Frasier and Surenaty DavisPatterson. Bergman said all five have brought consistently good attitudes and efforts that have been the basis for this strong start. Bergman said that Frasier, one of the team’s veterans, has

really stepped up as a voice of leadership on and off the court. “She’s been a great leader on the floor,” Bergman said. “She’s fully embraced the role of being a captain and does as much as she can for the team.” Bergman said Davis-Patterson, a sophomore, has also been a wonderful surprise and bonus to the team. “She’s a never-ending positive influence on the team,” Bergman said. Bergman praised DavisPatterson as someone who gives 110 percent and can be trusted with the ball in all situations. CSAT’s Jan. 9 home game against Barker was postponed because of the storm that rolled into WNY. The Eagles traveled to Newfane on Jan. 13, then returned to hostAkron (Jan. 16) andAlbion (Jan. 20) at the CSAT Middle School on Shoshone. Games are JV/varsity 4:30/6 p.m, starts.

The FC Buffalo soccer team won a tournament last week in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. In front of scouts from Major League Soccer and several other professional leagues, FC Buffalo defender Bobby Ross scored two match-winning goals in a pair of weekend wins as the MidWest won the National Premier Soccer League Combine Tournament in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. A Grand Island native and SUNY Brockport graduate,

Ross was one of four FC Buffalo players to represent the MidWest Conference at the combine: center midfielder Chris Walter (Nichols School/ Hartwick College), outside midfielder JeffThomas (Canandaigua, NY/Alfred University), and goalkeeper Waleed Cassis (Ottawa / University at Buffalo) also played both games for the winning side.

College football title and UB are pipedream — for now By Mike Haim COLUMNIST

I’m not sure if it was a moment of sheer hopefulness or just delusional thinking from a battle with a flu bug this past weekend, but there was a short period of time last Monday night when I actually pondered what it would be like if the University at Buffalo actually made the College Football Championship game. The thought didn’t last long, mind you. The reality is that smaller conferences, like the Mid-American in which UB competes, aren’t even in the mix when it comes to big-time bowl games, much less this newfangled (but long overdue)

invention to have one game decide the nominal national champion (remember, the title is not officially sanctioned by the NCAA). Even if UB’s “New York Initiative” eventually results in the football program becoming big enough to move up to a bigger conference, the question remains whether UB could migrate to one of the “Power Five” leagues that have a markedly better chance at getting their teams into the semi-final bowl games which feed into the title game. NCAA football isn’t like basketball, where a team can ride a hot streak during March Madness and seemingly magically make the Final Four. There is no football equivalent to

giant-beating hoops underdogs like Virginia Commonwealth, Wichita State, or Florida Gulf Coast. That said, it’s awfully hard to imagine the Bulls ever moving into one of the power conferences: theAtlantic Coast (ACC), Big Ten, Big 12, Pacific-12, and Southeastern (SEC). The one remote possibility might lie with the ACC, which in recent years has added Pitt, Syracuse, Louisville, and Notre Dame to its ranks. The current geography of the conference wouldn’t necessarily eliminate Buffalo, but I would anticipate it taking many years for UB to assemble the necessary infrastructure, fanbase and financial support to make the move feasible.

Even if the Bulls were to garner those prerequisites, there’s also a more basic aspect to worry about: establishing some sort of competitiveness against long-established programs. You can be optimistic by the glimpses seen in recent seasons: playing closely for portions of road games against Pitt, Georgia, and Ohio State, for example. But those are nothing but glimpses; being close for a half against a ranked opponent is simply not good enough if your eventual goal is something bigger than the Idaho Famous Potato Bowl. Don’t get me wrong – UB has done a fantastic job of making progress with their football program over the past 20 years. Athletic director Danny

White has to be given credit for keeping his eyes squarely on raising the school’s profile after his predecessors – Nelson Townsend, Bob Arkeilpane, and Warde Manuel – helped propel UB from its previous Division III status. But the proverbial mountain gets steeper the higher one climbs, and there isn’t exactly a long line of universities looking to demote themselves. UB’s growth will eventually depend on conferences becoming larger and covering more geographic ground. Along UB’s difficult “road to the national championship” is its ability to foster an unspoken tradition which keeps alumni coming back for years and decades. While the football

program has a devoted, loyal group of older graduates, there isn’t the rabid following as seen during Monday’s Oregon-Ohio State game, where middle-aged men had their faces, heads, and bodies painted in ways not even seen at NFL games. It doesn’t seem possible for the Bulls to magically acquire a group like that overnight. Then again, it seemed impossible 20 years ago for the terms “UB” and “bowl game” to be used in the same sentence. So maybe it wasn’t the flu that made me think of those national championship possibilities, but rather a willingness to be patient. www.twitter.com/mikehaim

Local sports Canisius basketball finishes strong, drops St. Joe’s

By Dave Ricci SPORTS REPORTER

It’s not how you start, but how you finish. And the Crusaders finished strong. Madut Ayiy and Stafford Trueheart joined forces to score 22 of Canisius’ 27 fourth-quarter points as the visiting Crusaders scored a 60-50 come-from-behind win over the Marauders in the first round of the Canisius/St. Joe’s basketball rivalry that was played on Jan. 10. The game was played before an estimated crowd of 1,000 fans that were not scared off by the poor weather conditions that had engulfed WNY. Knowing that their Delaware Avenue rivals had speed and athleticism on their side, the Marauders felt their best

chance for victory was to throw a high-pressure, uptempo, in-your-face style of defense at Canisius in hopes of getting the Crusaders off their game. It worked, as strong play from Marcell Davis (13 points/ nine rebounds), Matt Fritz and Edward Tabone helped St. Joe’s take a 12-9 lead after the first quarter. The Marauders’ lead grew to a shocking 27-15 advantage at halftime. “They only had 15 points at halftime,” St. Joe’s coach Mark Simon said. “So you have to think what we tried to do had some kind of impact on them. So I was proud of the way our guys played. They played hard. We were aggressive.” “No excuses,” said Canisius coach Kyle Husband. “They did outwork us. That’s usually not a characteristic of one of our teams. They came out and they played hard and we didn’t in the entire first half. especially in the first quarter.” Lack of communication

JEFFREY T. BARNES

Stafford Trueheart had 14 points in Canisius’ win over St. Joe’s on Jan. 10. on the court hampered the Crusaders throughout the first half as the scrappy Marauders simply out-worked and outhustled Canisius. Poor foul

shooting was also an issue for Canisius, as the team went just four of 12 from the line in the second quarter and missed a total of 17 free throws in the

first half. “We flowed better in the second half than in the first. We were kind of like scrambled in the first half. Not playing

well,” said Ayiy. “But in the second half, coach (Husband) came to us, yelled at us, told us what we had to do.” The play of Josh Huffman (13 points/five rebounds/four steals) helped Canisius chip away at the St. Joe’s lead and the Crusaders closed the gap to 40-33 after the third. St. Joe’s sophomore Nas Jackson (seven points/two assists) hit the first bucket of the fourth, but a 10-0 run that culminated with a bucket by Ayiy put Canisius in the drivers seat, 43-42. From there it was all Ayiy (14 points/17 rebounds) and Trueheart (14 points) as St. Joe’s had no way to contain the 6-foot-7 Ayiy and 6-foot-6 Trueheart. Even in defeat, Simon was pleased by what he saw from point guard Nas Jackson, who did not back down in the face of more experienced opponents. “He’s a sophomore. He continues to grow,” Simon said. “The one thing about Nas is you put him on the court, something is going to happen.”

Ayiy becoming one of best bigs on Canisius, in WNY as I should have,” Ayiy said. “But then as it progressed I SPORTS REPORTER kept practicing, kept learning new moves and I got better.” Canisius head coach Kyle At 6-foot-7, Madut Ayiy Husband said that Ayiy has knows that others expect a made tremendous strides lot of him when he steps onto each year as he has worked his the basketball court. But no one expects more from Ayiy way up through the program from freshmen ball to junior than he does himself. A junior in his first season varsity to varsity this season. Ayiy certainly made his of varsity with the Canisius Crusaders, Ayiy is well on his presence known with his way to establishing himself double-double of 14 points as one of the best big men in and 17 rebounds in Canisius’ 60-50 win over St. Joe’s on Western New York. “It started off hard for me. Jan.10, a win that helped the I just wasn’t playing as well Crusaders remain unbeaten By Dave Ricci

in Monsignor Martin Athletic Association action. At 6-foot-7 with long legs and a long reach, Ayiy, who plays both center and forward, has that pure basketball frame. But while his height and athletic ability for the game are a blessing, Ayiy knows that with those natural physical gifts, there comes the pounding pressure of expectations. People see a tall kid walk onto the court and automatically assume he will dominate the game, no matter how young he is. “It’s a lot of pressure,” Ayiy

explained. “Being big, they expect you to drop 20 and they expect you to get all of the boards. I just play as hard as I can.” Husband said that Ayiy has worked hard to learn the game and make the most of the size he has been blessed with. “Credit to him on how hard he has worked,” Husband said. “Whether it was the summer, whether it was freshmen, whether it was JV the kid has worked his tail off and he deserves everything he’s going to get for the next

two years and beyond.” Through the rise to the varsity ranks, Ayiy has found himself in that seemingly never-ending battle of having to deal with the lofty expectations others have set on him because of his size. The junior even admitted that in the first half of the Joe’s game, he could feel pressure mounting as he began to question himself from within. But while some kids might find the mental aspect of dealing with the expectations of others too overwhelming, Ayiy has

found a way to handle it. Trying to learn more and more each day, Ayiy said that he is fortunate to have such talented teammates, like Tyrone Wheatley, who push him to be his best. Ayiy also took another step forward in his career and he experienced the rite of passage of being the target of chatter via the St.Joe’s student-fan base. “This may sound weird, but I kinda like when the crowd is screaming at me,” Ayiy said with a smirk. “It kind of motivates me to play harder.”

Transitowne Jeep Chrysler Dodge Ram helps to raise money

Transitowne Jeep Chrysler Dodge Ram helped raise $3,770 in funding for Harris Hill Elementary with Chrysler brand’s Drive for the Kids® program. The check presentation was held January 7 at the Harris Hill Elementary PTO meeting and attended by members of the school board, Harris Hill PTO, and representatives from Transitowne. The actual fundraising event was held on October 9, in conjunction with the school’s Open House. Harris Hill Elementary earned a $10 contribution to the school on their behalf from the Chrysler brand by taking a brief test drive in a 2014 model Town & Country minivan—highest ranked in loyalty 12 years in a row—as well as other Chrysler vehicles made available for test drives

thanks to Transitowne Jeep Chrysler Dodge Ram. “Drive for the Kids is a mutually beneficial program. We are pleased to support our local schools, and enjoy demonstrating a terrific, world class product,” said Tom Shanley, Manager of the Northeast Business Center for Chrysler Group LLC. “Parents are genuinely interested in testing our 2014 Chrysler Town & Country minivan with all of the advanced safety, technology, and economy features, and we are happy to help raise extra dollars for the school. Drive for the Kids allows us the opportunity to work together for the kids and everyone has a great time!” At the conclusion of 2014 program, the school with the highest number of test drives in

each one of the five geographic regions (Southeast, Northeast, Midwest, Central, and West) will win an additional $5,000, for a total of $25,000 in additional funding from Chrysler through the Drive for the Kids program. Chrysler supports schools in the communities where the company does business. Since 1993, when Chrysler introduced Drive for the Kids, Chrysler dealers have worked with parents and educators in communities across the nation. Chrysler has contributed over $5 million directly to local schools for student needs, from playgrounds and field trips, to reading programs and new computers. Chrysler is proud of this tradition of community involvement. For more information, visit www. drive4kids.com.
