Hertel Ave. preps for Halloween By Dave Ricci COURIER CORRESPONDENT

Ghost and goblins’ of all shapes and sizes will be on the prowl this weekend as families prepare for the third annual Halloween on Hertel event on Oct.25 from 11am.1pm. “For the past two years we weren’t blessed by the weather gods unfortunately. We’ve had some rain, but they’ve still come out. Kids are hard core when it comes to candy, event organizer Sarah Nichter said with a laugh. Nichter said that every business on Hertel Ave. is welcomed and encouraged to take part in the Halloween on Hertel walk. But the bulk of

the foot traffic, based on the first two years, seems to be centered between Saranac to Wellington. Nichter said there will be

plenty of activities for the whole family to enjoy as kids prime themselves for Halloween. The North Park Theater

will be showing the Bill Murray, Dan Akroyd classic “Ghost Busters as it’s weekend discount matinee movie that weekend as well.

The Chuck E. Cheese mascot will be roaming about handing out cotton candy, photographer Tess Connolly will be on hand taking professional quality photos. Nichter said having Connolly available to take photos will allow mom’s and dad’s more time to enjoy the walk with their children without having to worry about fumbling around to take photos themselves. “And she’ll give you the proof of it so you can have it printed. To have someone there who’s a professional, to actually their attention for five seconds, is always really nice. Floral Explorations will be hosting a free pumpkin painting event. Being held on Oct.25, early

in the day, is a two-fold benefit for families looking for trick or treat fun. It won’t interfere with traditional trick or treat time on Halloween night or conflict with parties. Most of all it provides yet another safe, family-friendly event for people of North Buffalo. Participating businesses have orange and white “Halloween on Hertel signs hanging in their windows to signify they are a stop along the walk. “The kids have made it a game. It’s like a treasure hunt for them almost, said Nichter. “They’ll walk be and they’ll scream ‘there’s one!’ And it’s sooo cute to hear them because they go all excited. So that in itself becomes an activity for them. It’s like where’s Waldo? It’s so cool.

Tully Rinckey PLLC donates to Buffalo Criminal Law Center

Wanting to help law students and scholars advance criminal law scholarship in Western New York and beyond, Tully Rinckey PLLC donated funds raised through a firm community support initiative to the SUNY Buffalo Law School’s Buffalo Criminal Law Center (BCLC). Tully Rinckey PLLC Buffalo Managing Partner Mary Beth DePasquale, Esq. delivered a check for $250 to BCLC Director Luis Chiesa. The BCLC is a national leader in criminal law scholarship. It hosts academic events and provides opportunities to students of domestic, international and comparative criminal law with the goal of “promoting the convergence of common law and civil law approaches to criminal justice.” Funds for Tully Rinckey PLLC’s donation to the BCLC were raised through the firm’s “Jeans and Sneakers” initiative.

In February 2010, Tully Rinckey PLLC adopted a Friday dress down option, dubbed “Jeans and Sneakers.” Under this initiative, employees are allowed to wear jeans and sneakers to the office on Fridays in exchange for a $1 donation for each apparel item worn. The firm matches these employee donations dollar-for-dollar. Over the past four years, the “Jeans and Sneakers” initiative has driven over $16,000 in donations to dozens of employee-nominated organizations across New York State, such as the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, Western New York Heroes in Williamsville, City Mission of Schenectady, the Albany Housing Coalition, Trillium Health in Rochester and Helping Hounds Dog Rescue in Syracuse. To speak to DePasquale or for more information, contact Ilene Strober at 439-4700 or istrober@1888law4life.com.

Caruso’s Italian Imports By Dave Ricci COURIER CORRESPONDENT

Erik Hoertz smirked as he stated it was definitely a wise business move to retain the name of Caruso’s Italian Imports. “It’s nice to see your name on the side of the building but I’d rather see the business do well instead of changing it,” Hoertz said with a smile. “Hoertz’ Italian Imports doesn’t quite have the same ring.” Located at 1212 Hertel Ave., near the corner of Lovering, Caruso’s has been a staple of this diverse yet still very Italian neighborhood for nearly a quarter of a century. When word circulated earlier

in the year that long-time owner Vincent Caruso was looking to retire countless people lamented that this jewel of the neighborhood with it’s fresh deli meats and cheese and endless supply of Italian themed foods would be closing its doors forever. Enter Erik Hoertz who purchased the business from Caruso at the end of June and officially reopened about one month later. Longing to open his own business for some time now, as soon as Hoertz heard the store was for sale he contacted Caruso and started the ball rolling. But Hoertz was hardly a stranger to the store as his wife, Rosa Hoertz, worked at Caruso’s from 1999-2000. Rosa’s father,

Angelo Falcone, is among the many regulars that still make their way into the store a couple times a week. Hoertz said that maintaining the integrity of what Vincent Caruso built over his 24 years of was a top priority. Going with the motto of why change it if it works-the only “changes” that Hoertz focused on were cosmetic ones. New paint job, redo the floors and lights. Basic upgrades to enhance the experience of entering Caruso’s “It’s very good,” said Vincent Caruso. “He made a lot of improvements.” Hoertz said that Caruso, though technically retired, has been a great source of advice for when it came to ordering merchandise and just settling into the day-to-day operations of running the business. “It’s been such a smooth transition because of him,” said Hoertz. Caruso’s is still a haven for the very best in Italian foods, deli meats like Boars Head, nuts and a wide-range of cheese as well as fresh fruits and vegetables. Most of all Erik and Rosa Hoertz want Caruso’s Italian Imports to remain a destination where as soon as customers walk through the door they feel like they are among family.

Learning Choices Network plans three-day alternative learning workshop in Buffalo

Learning Choices Network (LCN), a community partnership that provides alternative educational opportunities for local youth, will host its second annual Regional Gathering Nov. 8-10 in the Buffalo History Museum, One Museum Court, Buffalo. The event will offer a wide variety of topics and workshops of interest to families, homeschoolers and educators who value rich learning experiences. Distinguished speakers will include progressive educators from New York, Washington, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Vermont. “The best learning is not found at a desk endlessly preparing for tests. Learning happens through engagement within one’s environment and with the people occupying it,” said Megan Mills Hoffman, one of LCN’s key organizers. “Our programs develop the kind of leaders who are

engaged in their community and are able to put their ideas into action from a very young age.” The event will highlight cultural organizations, independent schools, study programs, colleges and universities that offer dynamic learning opportunities for students of all ages. Topics will include how to develop one’s personal learning plan and objectives; how to develop a competitive portfolio for college admissions and employment; the creative economy and how it affects the relevance of school, testing, college success and gainful employment; technological tools available for learners and their families; the importance of creative inquiry in developing critical thinkers, problem solvers, innovators, small business owners and entrepreneurs; and the history of education reform and social movements in the

WNY region. Participants can register for LCN Annual Gathering at http://learningchoicesnetworkbuffalo.brownpapertickets.com. LCN’s programs are open to the public. “What strengthens learners is choice. We develop self-reliance, responsibility and competence when we do the thinking about our own learning. As an educator for 40 years, I have dreamed of the possibilities that the Learning Choices Network offers,” said Dr. John E. Newton, director of Mandala School, East Aurora. “This program is designed for parents who may be questioning the mainstream educational program that their children are currently enrolled in, and provide direction for those interested in creating a more personalized learning path,” Mills Hoffman added. “Issues such as Common Core, standardized testing and classroom over-

crowding are a concern for parents in every school district across the country. Our goal is to provide those parents with alternative solutions and creative options.” The cost of this unique educational workshop is just $20 per day or $50 for a three-day pass. Daily themes include Family Day on Nov. 8, Thinkers Day on Nov. 9 and Educators Day on Nov. 10. For more information, visit www.learningchoicesnetwork.net or www.facebook.com/LearningChoicesNetwork. The Learning Choices Network is a community coalition of educators, independent schools, community activists, advocates, entrepreneurs, homeschoolers, friends and families working together to create, facilitate and promote alternative opportunities for authentic learning in the local community.

Nardin girls soccer captures MMAA crown By Dave Ricci SPORTS REPORTER

It was the pivotal point when the season could have gone in two drastically different directions for the Nardin soccer team. Senior goalie Clare Galbo had just sustained a horrific knee injury during a Sept. 10 home game against rival Nichols. Gators coach Frank Cotroneo tried to focus his emotionally distraught team by challenging them to rise to the occasion and stay strong for Galbo’s sake. “The very (minute) Galbo got hurt I knew it was serious,” said Cotroneo. “In the back of my mind I knew she was done for

the year. I got everybody together about 25 yards away from her after the game and I said, ‘Look, now is the point in your season. This is it. How are you going to respond? What are you guys going to do?’ She was over there crying because she thought she hurt us. That’s how (upset) Galbo was. She was crying because she thought she hurt us. That was the demise of our team. But the girls never quit. I put the challenge to them. ‘This is your challenge. Let’s see how you respond. I want to see what you guys are made of.’” The Gators did in fact rise to the challenge as they have clinched first place in the Monsignor Martin Athletic Association North Division. Nardin will go into its final regular season game

JEFFREY T. BARNES

The Nardin girls soccer team had to overcome key injuries to win the MMAA regular-season title.

against Mt. St. Mary on Oct. 21 with a 6-1 league record, 12-2-1 overall and the top seed in the semifinals that will be played at Nichols School on Oct. 25. The games are tentatively slated for 1 and 3 p.m., but will likely be changed because of SATs that are taking place that morning. Galbo, the backbone of the Gators’ defensive game, was a huge part of the team winning the league playoff title and going to states last season. In addition to Galbo, the Gators were without two-year varsity veteran Hailey Mills, who missed eight games due to injury. With Galbo down, Emma Stephenson stepped in between the pipes. But, according to Cotroneo, it was the overall character of each girl that kept the team together when most clubs

might have unraveled. Senior leaders Tricia Mangan, Emily Maggio and Eileen Rath were key in keeping the team together. “They’ve been good leaders. They really are good leaders,” said Cotroneo. “Tricia is a little more vocal than Eileen is. Eileen leads a little more by example then she does vocally. Emily Maggio, another senior, she speaks up. ‘C’mon girls let’s go!’ So they try to keep the troops alive.” Likely to play Mt. Mercy in the semifinals, Cotroneo said he believes his team will go into the post season with a strong, ‘we can’t be beat,’ mind set “They just have the mind set that we’re going to go out there and play hard,” he said. “We’re gonna play hard regardless of who’s on the field with us.”

CSAT seniors pass torch to new leaders By Dave Ricci SPORTS REPORTER

Passing the torch. We tend to think of it as a rite of passage reserved only for champions. One leader of a dynasty passes the torch of leadership to the young stud who in entrusted with the future of leading the team into it’s next chapter of greatness. But what about teams that are still at the start of their story? They have a torch to pass, too. Just ask the Charter School for Applied Technology volleyball team. On Oct. 15, the CSAT

Lady Eagles played their final home game against Wilson. It was a night in which they said thank you and goodbye to nine seniors. What made this night different than other senior nights around WNY is these nine girls weren’t just the departing seniors — they were the original members of this program that was founded in 2010. “I know we’ve never really won a game but it’s really important to succeed,” said senior captain Francelis Dejesus. “Keep trying. Work hard. Never give up. That’s really a big message that I want to give to them. Because you

just need to work hard and keep working.” It’s been an interesting, yet far from easy, journey for the Eagles these past four seasons. Most of the girls had no volleyball training or experience of any kind before they walked into the gym that August morning in 2010 for tryouts. Having never won a game has tested the character and dedication of every girl. Through it, the bond of their sisterhood keeps them coming back and trying to capture that elusive first win. Junior Jessica Cassanova, is one of those underclassmen who will be counted on to take the Eagles into the next stage.

“I want to show them you left a mark on us in order for us to succeed,” said Cassanova. “Just like you wanted us to.” Cassanova said respect and working as a team through the ups and downs are the biggest lessons she learned from the outgoing seniors. Coach Doug Whitehead said that Dejesus and fellow seniors Marissa Lettiri, Danielle Manikhout, Janessa Perez, Yazmine Garcia, Zahra Ahmed, Iyanna Taylor, Haley Indelicato, and Lauren Schihl all did something special they can be proud of. “Those seniors they built a great foundation for these kids,” said Whitehead. “The

juniors, the sophomores, the freshmen, they all look up to those girls. They most definitely started a tradition. It might not be a winning tradition just yet, but it’s a tradition of these kids are growing. They’re becoming great members of the community and they’re going to be successful because of it. They just keep fighting. They’re fighters.” With a good core of juniors and some talented girls on JV, the Eagles have been left in good hands. The returning Lady Eagles know it’s about baby steps. They have to walk before they can run. Though they lost to Wilson, the third set

going 25-23, the level of compete that they displayed on the court mixed with the energy on the bench gave the Eagles a taste of what they are capable of and that success is closer than they think. “Every single game just bring the passion. You’ve got to want it,” said Dejesus. “In order to win you’ve got to want it.” Dejesus said along with working hard she wants the returning girls to seize the moment, because the time in high school with your teammates goes quicker than you think. “It does go by fast,” said Dejesus.

DeMarsh earns 100th victory, still has one goal in mind By Jonah Bronstein SPORTS REPORTER

Nick DeMarsh took over the struggling women’s soccer team at Buffalo State College a dozen years ago with one goal in mind. “I wanted to win the conference and represent this school on the national level at the NCAAs,” said DeMarsh, a three-time All-SUNYAC player for the Bengals who assisted the men’s program for four years prior to becoming the women’s head coach. That has not happened yet. “So we still have some work to do,” DeMarsh is quick to point out. But the program has come a long way under DeMarsh’s direction. DeMarsh entered this weekend’s homestand with 101 career victories. In the 21 seasons prior to DeMarsh taking over, the Bengals won 114 games. “I have to give a lot of credit to Jerry Boyes, our athletic director, for allowing me to build the program and build the team,” DeMarsh said. “This was a situation that really needed to be built from the ground up.” DeMarsh was teaching at Native American Magnet school and coaching the Bengals part-time during his first two seasons, before Boyes promoted him to a full-time coaching position. “When you are a part-time coach, you are going to get part-time results,” DeMarsh said. “We really didn’t start

COURTESY OF BUFFALO STATE ATHLETICS

Buffalo State women’s soccer coach Nick DeMarsh has 101 career coaching wins. winning until I got the job fulltime.” The Bengals have posted winning records in seven of the past 11 seasons, and last year finished second in the SUNYAC.

With a very young roster this season, the Bengals are 6-7-1 and 3-4 in conference play. Buffalo State hosts New Paltz (8-6-2, 2-3-2) at 3 p.m. Friday. A win would solidify the Bengals at sixth place in

the SUNYAC standings and keep them out of the play-in round of the postseason tournament. “We want to take it one game at a time, and really, all that matters for us is our next

game,” DeMarsh said. Buffalo State hosts defending champion Oneonta at 10 a.m. Saturday and wraps up the regular season Oct. 29 with a non-conference home game against St.

John Fisher. When DeMarsh took over the Bengals program he had players who weren’t even starters on their high school teams. DeMarsh, who lives in North Buffalo and is the director of coaching for the Kenmore Soccer Club, has extended his recruiting range throughout the state and into New Jersey – and even has one player on the team from California. But the Bengals are captained by local recruits in senior Liz Malinowski (Williamsville South) and junior Gabrianna Boldinski (Kenmore East). “Liz came to us with great experience in terms of highlevel club soccer and has really learned the ropes of college soccer,” DeMarsh said. “She’s a very smart player, a good student, and a good example for our younger players.” Boldinski is “probably the best center defender in the SUNYAC,” DeMarsh said. “She’s an absolute monster of a ball-winner. I could probably player her at any position on the field.” Sophomrore midfielder Katie Shaw (Newfane) has been key contributor for the Bengals this year and is pushing to be a captain next season, DeMarsh said. With 100 wins in his review mirror, DeMarsh has no plans to stop before he reaches his ultimate goal. “I’m pretty stubborn,” he said. “I would never leave the job undone.”
