Explore Buffalo to offer course, training, season pass As Explore Buffalo continues to grow in scope and popularity throughout Western New York, the organization, which offers outstanding architectural, history and neighborhood tours, is adding even more local programming. New additions include a five-part history course called Adventures in Buffalo History, and the offering of a new Explore Buffalo Season Pass. The organization is also currently planning a new round of docent training classes beginning in February. Adventures in Buffalo History, featuring experienced and knowledgeable Explore Buffalo docents, will focus on a wide variety of local historical topics ranging from the French, English and Native Americans to the forts of Buffalo. Sessions will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursdays in First Presbyterian Church, One Symphony Circle, Buffalo, beginning Jan. 15. Each session is only $10, or attend all five sessions for just $40. Courses are free to Season Pass holders. On Jan. 15, topics will include “Before Buffalo — The French, English and Native Americans” with guest speaker John Fagant,
and “Women of Millionaire’s Row” with Chuck LaChiusa. “Before Buffalo” examines the Niagara Frontier during the period of 1600 to 1800, just as the Buffalo Creek settlement was forming. The region was inhabited by Native American tribes who represented a buffer zone between the strong Huron Confederacy to the west and the Iroquois Confederacy to the east. The French, and later the British, were the first Europeans to enter the region. This lecture will discuss their activities and adventures during a rich and fascinating period of Western New York history. While the men of Millionaire’s Row often receive the most attention, their wives deserve equal if not greater attention for their fascinating lives. “Women of Millionaire’s Row” will feature stories and photos of several of these women including Kate Robinson Butler, Jewett Williams Pratt, Carolyn Tripp Clement, Grace Millard Knox, Ethel Mann Curtis and Ella Portia Goodyear.
