Football players help students with reading and writing

The day before their homecoming celebration, most Kenmore West High School varsity football players could be found reading alongside much younger students at Lindbergh, Roosevelt and Holmes elementary schools. The players – including the iconic Blue Devil mascot – provided feedback to the children, who eagerly showcased their most recent writing and reading assignments. This is the third year that Matt O’Malley, a special education teacher and

assistant varsity football coach at Kenmore West, has brought the players out to elementary schools to read alongside younger children, and it has become an annual tradition, growing each year. “I think it’s important for the players to read to kids, especially since, when they get older, they are going to be reading to their own children,” O’Malley said. It was a coincidence the event fell the day before homecoming, but that didn’t deter the players from taking part. They started at Lindbergh Elementary

School, where they not only read with the children but engaged them in a pickup football game too. At Roosevelt, they worked alongside struggling readers who have been working hard to advance their literacy skills. Finally, they finished the day with two classroom visits at Holmes. The younger students were excited to be paired with the players, who wore their jerseys and were accompanied by the Blue Devil mascot. The first year, O’Malley only took his players to one class at one

When we put them in a position to be successful, they do it.” O’Malley expressed his appreciation toward Brett Banker, district athletics

director, and Rich Harris, head coach, for their support for the program. The activity accomplishes a lot. For one thing, it shows the elementary school students that the players on the field are also students in the classroom. It is also a learning experience for the players. “It is important for the younger students to see our athletes in class,” O’Malley said. “But it’s not just

important for the younger kids. We are trying to mold these young men who are probably going to be fathers at some point.” And as for the younger students, it gets them excited about what they are reading and writing in class. “To have a different kind of audience is really exciting for them,” said Rita Klipfell, a teacher at Holmes Elementary School.

Hydraulic Hearth to host reading and book signing

“An Arsonist’s Guide to Writers’ Homes in New England,” which was a national bestseller and has appeared in a dozen foreign editions and three other books. He lives in Portland, Maine, and teaches creative writing at Bowdoin College. Novelist, blogger, nature writer and essayist Bill Roorbach has not, to our knowledge, previously read in Buffalo, but he has visited Talking Leaves and spent some time here, impressed enough that he is eager to share his work with us, in the company of fellow Maine resident Clarke. His recently released novel, “The Remedy for Love,” drops two strangers into a shabby, ramshackle cabin in the Maine Woods in the midst of a monster snowstorm. Character driven, and laced with subtle humor, the book, like Clarke’s, plays with readers’ expectations – it is a quirky romance, a suspense novel and a field guide to survival in the midst of one of nature’s cataclysms; funny, poignant, sad, thrilling and unpredictable. Roorbach is the author of nine books of fiction and nonfiction, including the Flannery O’Connor Prize and O. Henry Prize winner “Big Bend,” “Into Woods,” “Temple Stream” and the bestselling “Life Among Giants.” His craft book, “Writing Life Stories,” is used in writing programs around the world. He taught for many years at Ohio State University, and now lives and writes in Maine, frequently blogging, with fellow writer Dave Gessner, at billanddavescocktailhour.com. Talking Leaves…Books, in conjunction with the Larkin Square Author Series, is pleased to announce that we will host a reading and book signing with two acclaimed novelists, Brock Clarke and Bill Roorbach, who share a publisher (Algonquin Books) and who have each recently been touring with their new works of fiction. We bring them together to appear at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 17 at the Hydraulic Hearth, 716 Swan St., across the street from Larkin Square. The Hearth will have available a selection of freshly brewed Buffalo beer (from Community Beer Works, which will have a satellite brewery there, and from nearby Flying Bison) to go with the intoxicating (or is it sobering?, maybe both) work we’ll hear from the visiting writers. Beer aficionados, and fans of our fair city, the authors suggested we pair them with local brew when we proposed that they visit. The event is free and open to the public—anyone wishing to have a book signed is expected to purchase it from Talking Leaves, as an act of respect and support for the authors and the independent bookstore who is sponsoring their visit (in collaboration with the Canisius Contemporary Writers Series and the UB English Department’s Exhibit X Series). Brock Clarke has made well-received visits to Buffalo for both Canisius and UB series in the past, in support of his short fiction and earlier novels. His new book, “The Happiest People in the World,” is a spy novel/comedy of errors that brings international terror and conspiracy to a small Upstate New York town – it is incredibly funny and unbearably sad in equal measure. Clarke is the author of “Exley” and

Hertel Computers keeps pace By Dave Ricci COURIER CORRESPONDENT

Computers are in Don Luscombe’s blood. As the owner of Hertel Computers, Luscombe has seen the technology age boom to new heights as his business has kept pace. Originally located on Lovering, Hertel Computers has been serving North Buffalo for 11 years. “I’ve been in computers most of my life,” Luscombe said over a cup of coffee at Kostas. Involved in virtually every aspect of the computer business, from sales to services, during his life Luscombe made the plunge to open his own store. Luscombe was at the Lovering location for just over a year before moving to a large store front at the corner of Hertel and Parkside for roughly six years. Now, located at 1567 Hertel, next to the previous store front, Hertel Computers is a perfect one-stop destination for your computer needs.

Like other locally owned businesses Luscombe has to find his ways to carve out his niche in the market to survive against the bigger chain style stores. His plan? Simple. Give the people what they can’t find else where at provide it at a fair price. “We stock a lot of parts that they don’t stock,” said Luscombe. “They just do retail sales. So we have power jacks and cables and smaller parts-hinges for laptops. We also carry a lot of screens for iPhones and iPads.” Along with the hard to find items, Hertel Computers also offers bargains of high quality preowned laptops, desk tops and Apple computers. The wide variety of items that they sell coupled with the plus of being able to repair on sight gives Hertel Computers a leg up on the competition. “It’s more than just accessories. It’s more like items needed and repairs,” said Luscombe. “Everybody can (sell) a cable but they don’t have (the means) to fix it there themselves. They send everything out (of state). We do everything locally.”

Dave Schmeidler, who has been with Hertel Computers for eight years and Chris Barr (six years) are two highly qualified and experience technicians who handle repairs on sight. “Five years ago you didn’t see the things that we have now,” said Luscombe. “Cell phones weren’t smart and iPads weren’t around.” Luscombe said that Barr and Schmeidler work to remain update to with the changing technology of the products in their field so they can serve their costumers as best as possible. Having moved a couple of times Luscombe is committed to keeping his business in the heart of North Buffalo and, with a data base of over 11,000 names, he has no intentions of heading for the suburbs. Hertel Ave. is home. “There’s a lot of people. There’s a good density of people here,” he said. “So there’s a lot of costumers in the area.” Hertel Computers can be reached at 873-3362.

ECC honored as one of the nation’s best colleges for vets

Erie Community College is known as a Western New York leader in providing support and career-focused education for returning U.S. serviceman. But thanks to recent accolades in a servicemen-focused national publication, the college will enter 2015 recognized as one of the country’s best colleges for veterans. Military Times – an independent news and information organization dedicated to service members and their families; and comprised of the Army Times, Navy Times, Air Force Times and Marine Corps Times – recently ranked ECC seventh overall (and tops in New York State) among the country’s best career and technical colleges in its annual “Best for Vets” issue, determined by a highly respected, nearly 110-question analysis of a college’s efforts to provide veterans an environment for success. ECC’s devoted Veterans Affairs offices (at each campus), affordability and staff support for the college’s over 550 student vets earned high marks from the organization, but also validated the college’s veteran commitment at a national level. “This is not only another example of how ECC is gaining national recognition for its

With a supportive community, classroom-to-career opportunities and Veterans Affairs coordinators helping over 500 student veterans every year, ECC has positioned itself to provide the best educational, retraining and counseling support for Western New York’s servicemen and women. Sacred Heart soccer upsets Nardin in MMAA finals By Tom Gallagher SPORTS EDITOR

The Sacred Heart Academy girls soccer team has, according to head coach Amy Drozen, been set on establishing itself as one of the premier programs in all of Western New York this fall. The Sharks took a major step forward in doing so by punctuating a strong playoff run with an upset victory on Sunday (Nov. 2). Kelsey Kramer scored the go-ahead goal with 1:58 left and Sacred Heart, the No. 3 seed in the Monsignor Martin Athletic Association large school playoff bracket, knocked off top-seeded Nardin Academy, 2-1, in the playoff finals at Niagara University. The win, which grants the Sharks a trip to the State Catho-

lic Championships on Sunday, Nov. 9 at Owl Hollows Park in Staten Island, New York, came a week after the team beat No. 2 Nichols in the semifinals. “I’m extremely proud of them,” said Drozen, whose team also won the MMAA crown in 2012. “The girls really wanted to make a name for themselves this year. They wanted to be recognized in Western New York and they’ve fought for this.” The Sharks (10-10) had to fight. Nardin, the defending MMAAchampion, entered the tilt having won seven straight and 11 of its last 12. Additionally, the Gators had defeated Sacred Heart 5-0 and 2-1 in the teams’ two regular season meetings this year. But much like they’ve done since a midseason injury knocked starting goalkeeper Alexandra Dwyer out for the year, the Sharks rallied around backup goalie Cara Manzella. The junior keeper had eight saves in the first half alone and thwarted several prime scoring chances generated by a power-

JEFFREY T. BARNES

Emma Gervase and the Nardin girls soccer team fell in the MMAA championship game Nov. 2. ful Nardin attack. “She’s been in covering for [Dwyer] after she had knee surgery and she’s emerged as a leader,” Drozen said. Neither team broke through until the second half when Sacred Heart senior Katelyn

Matre finished off a nice cross from junior Madison Koons in the 64th minute to give the Sharks a 1-0 lead. Playing withoutAll-Western New York standout Tricia Mangan, the Gators drew even with 3:37 left when sophomore

Sydney Scello headed in a set piece off a free kick. Emma Gervase earned an assist on the play. “We gave up a tough ball near the end and they capitalized,” Drozen said. “Good teams capitalize.” Good teams respond, too. And that’s what the Sharks did. With 1:58 to play, Kramer crashed the net and bodied in Taylor DiMarco’s free kick, which bounced off the crossbar. For Nardin, it was, in coach Frank Cotroneo’s eyes, a disappointing end to yet another successful season. Though the Gators were unable to come away with a second consecutive Monsignor Martin playoff championship, they finished 14-3-1 and won the regular season league title. “The girls played well this year,” Cotroneo said. “They played real well. We beat Aquinas and we tied Mercy (Rochester).” Like Sacred Heart, the team endured its share of adversity when starting keeper Clare Galbo went down with a sea-

son-ending knee injury early in the season. And they faced a little more after learning that Mangan, an alpine skier, was injured on a recent ski trip and wouldn’t be available for the championship game. “It was a huge difference not having her,” Cotroneo said, before adding that fellow midfielder Eileen Rath had a strong day in Mangan’s absence and a very strong season overall. “She wins all those 50s, she scores, so my center forward was gone. So we had to try and figure it out, who would do what in a short period of time.” Still, Cotroneo said that the Gators played well enough to win against the Sharks. “We outshot them by a bunch,” he said. “They didn’t have many quality shots. Their goalie had a lot of saves, we hit the crossbar — just couldn’t put it in.” The Gators will graduate six seniors this year in Mangan, Madison Bradley, Alyssa Lesakowski,Amelia Simpson, Emilie Maggio and Madeline Lofaso.

Canisius maintains focus as MMAA postseason begins By Dave Ricci SPORTS REPORTER

Stay humble and stay hungry. That’s the message the Canisius football team will take with it as it heads into the postseason. The Crusaders wrapped up a spotless 9-0 regular season

mark and the top seed in the Monsignor Martin Athletic Association when they dispatched St. Francis, 48-13, Nov. 1. But while finishing in first and earning the first round bye in the playoffs is a nice plus, by no means are the Crusaders satisfied with just that. “We had a lot of team goals that we set out with in the preseason and one of those was to get the spot and get the bye week,” Canisius head coach Rich Robbins said. “We’re happy with that.

It’s a great time of the year, especially with the tough schedule that we had, to get some time to kind of rest, heal up. Give the program an overhaul. We’re gonna make it almost like a (training) camp week. We’re going back to basics, we’re going back to fundamentals, we’re not really preparing for an opponent right now because we don’t know who it’s going to be. So it’s a nice opportunity to look in the mirror and fix what we want to fix and just have a really good week of development

and conditioning and things like that.” Ending the regular season holding down the No.1 spot on the WNY Large School Poll, the Crusaders were ranked 39th in the most recent USAToday High School Poll. Canisius knocked off powers like Cardinal Mooney (Ohio), Aquinas and Class AA South champion Jamestown and scored a 17-0 win over St. Joe’s. Throughout the year, Robbins said his team has done an exceptional job of shut-

ting out the expectations of others and just focusing on the process of taking it one day at a time. “Coming off the unbeaten season in 2012, I think last year we got too focused on those big goals and talking about national rankings, unbeaten seasons and all those types of things,” said Robbins. “We really learned our lesson from that last year and really maintained (our focus).” Looking to take care of business in the MMAA semifinals that will take

place Nov. 13 at Ralph Wilson Stadium and the finals on Nov.20, the Crusaders have their eyes on the NYS Catholic State Championships on Nov.29. “We have a lot of football left to play,” said Robbins. “We’ve got two games at Ralph Wilson Stadium to win our championship here locally and the exciting thing this year is the league champ gets to go down to New York City to play for a state championship. Obviously we hope to be in that game.”

Nichols edges Buff Sem field hockey Nardin, St. Mary’s play for MMAA title By Dave Ricci SPORTS REPORTER

Amazing things can happen when you will do anything for the teammate next to you. The Nichols field hockey team can attest to that. Jessica Gates scored twice and Lydia Gavner added a pair of assists as the No. 4 Lady Vikings scored a 3-0 win over No. 5 Buffalo Seminary in their NYSAIS quarterfinal game that was played Oct. 29 at Peek Field on the Nichols School campus. The victory earned the Lady Vikings a return trip to the state tournament in New York City, where they faced top-seeded Rye Country Day School in the semifinals on Oct. 31. Rye went on to down

Nichols in the semifinals, 4-0, ending the Vikings’ season. Against Buff Sem, Gates put Nichols on the board 11 minutes into the first half when she took a sweet feed from Lexi Mediak. Gates notched her second goal a minute later when she posted the ball into the net after Lydia Gavner drove the ball down low from just outside the circle. Gavner, who also set up Elizabeth Bourne’s goal in the second half, used her slick stick handling and play making skills to help the Vikings control the tempo all game long, as they limited the Red-Tailed Hawks to just two shots. If you were to ask, the Lady Vikings would be quick to tell you the secret to their on-field chemistry is found off the field. “We have coach (Mike) Masters come every Tuesday,

which helps us a lot,” Gates said. “(He tells us), ‘be relentless and just leave everything on the field and never give up.’ And that’s what we did today.” Gates said that meeting with Masters, the well-known WNY team-building skills guru, every week gave the girls a different perspective and taught them how to truly believe, love and fight for each other off and on the field. “It really helped us bond,” said Gates. “...It kind of brought us more together than we were before.” Lady Vikings coach Beth Stone said without question the sessions with Masters were enlightening for everyone on the team and helped them forge an off-field bond that has transcended to tighter play in games. “Coach Masters has done a great job with us,” said Stone. “Through the CrossFit Train-

ing program it’s really helped us bond together as a team. We were close to start with, but it really makes us that much stronger. Everybody really cares for each other. They want to make sure everybody is taken care of. Just a genuine love between everybody.” Sem, which played Nichols tough in a scrimmage last week, had a strong contingency of mostly red and white-clad supporters trying to will their girls to the upset win. But it wasn’t to be. Hawks coach Helen Marlette said that her girls emptied the tank and that she was proud of the effort they gave. “This was the first time in our history playing in the playoffs. So it was exciting for them,” said Marlette. “This group of seniors has left a legacy that Sem will benefit from in every sport, every year. It’s a good way to start the year, athletically.”

JEFFREY T. BARNES

The Nardin volleyball team took on St. Mary’s for the MMAA playoff championship on Nov. 5. Results weren’t available at press time.

Nardin swim still unbeaten in league this millenium By Dave Ricci SPORTS REPORTER

And the streak continues. As the Nardin swim team prepares for the All-Catholic champions that will be held Nov. 11-12 at the Flickinger Center on the ECC City Campus, the Gators will be riding an impressive wave of momentum to the tune of 181 wins in a row in league competition. “I approach the beginning of our year by telling our kids

that all the fans that are here are not here to see the other team win. They’re here to see Nardin Academy lose. To see Nardin Academy fail,” said Nardin coach Brad Boyle. “I sort of put out the (challenge) that they’re not the ones to give these other people that satisfaction.” In addition to non-league wins over West Seneca East, Niagara-Wheatfield and Frontier, the Gators went 9-0 in Monsignor Martin Athletic Association to claim the league title for the 17th year in a row. Nardin has not lost in the league since Buffalo Seminary defeated them in the second meet of the 1998 season when the two teams shared the regular season title. “It’s definitely something

we’re very proud of,” said junior co-captain Arianna Revalas. “Before swim meets we always say ‘we’ve got to keep (the streak going for) those six seniors. We’re not going to lose it now. ‘This is not the time.’ There will be a time when we will stop winning, but I just tell everyone this is not the time.” Along with Revalas, the Gators are led by senior Anna Rubino (sprint/freestyle), sophomore Danielle Orie (sprint/ free), sophomore Julia Martin (distance/free/breaststroke), and junior Sarah Townsend (IM/breaststroke). In past years, the Gators have relied on one or two strong swimmers to carry the load

and be the main reason why the streak remains in tact. But that Gators do not have that go-to girl this season. In fact, Sacred Heart had a brush with destiny when it almost ended the streak early in the season. But as the year has unfolded, the overall depth of the Nardin roster has proven to be up to the challenge. Though the Gators aren’t notching as many first-place finishes as in the past, this year’s team is earning the bulk of its points by placing more girls in the top three than it usually does. “I think what’s so special about the Nardin swim team is we have so much depth,” said Revalas. “In every race, if we second- and third-place that

cancels out (the opponent’s) first place. That’s what I think is really special about our team. The past three years that I’ve been on it, I think that’s one of our greatest traits.” Maintaining a winning streak of epic proportion not only speaks to the talent but also the mental toughness of these young ladies as they have struck a perfect chord of protecting the streak yet not letting the pressure overwhelm them. “We really ride them pretty hard to make sure that regardless of your competition you’re putting forth your best effort all the time,”said Boyle, “so that you don’t lose your focus as the weeks go on.” Revalas said that as a team

they are always aware of the streak but over the course of time, girls have learned to put it to the side until the end of the season. Then, if the streak is still alive, they reflect on the accomplishment. “We’re definitely not obsessed by it. I know that some of the freshmen didn’t even know that we were undefeated for so long until they joined the team,” said Revalas. “Even though it’s something we’re very proud of, we don’t boast about it. It’s in the back of our minds during races. We try to focus on the individual meets. Take each meet at a time until our championship meet and then say, ‘ok this is the end of the season.’”
