East Aurora Fire, Police join Unyts’ holiday blood drive By Tim Fenster

ORCHARD PARK SUN EDITOR

East Aurora firefighters and police will be joining the Unyts Holiday Heroes campaign to help increase blood donations during a time of year when these life-savings donations generally drop. The East Aurora Police Department and Fire Department will be hosting a blood drive at the East Aurora Fire Hall, 585 Oakwood Ave., on Saturday, Jan. 3 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. This marks just the second year of the Unyts Holiday Heroes campaign, and the first year of participation by East Aurora police and fire agencies. The fire company has long held an annual blood drive in conjunction with its annual open house, typically held in October. But when firefighters approached Unyts this year about the open house blood drive, they were instead offered the opportunity to take part in the Holiday Heroes campaign. East Aurora Fire Captain Thomas Ess said joining the campaign allowed them to partner with the police department, which he expects to double participation.

Unyts held a drive at last year’s East Aurora Street Festival & Sidewalk Sale. The community has been very supportive of the organization. The two departments join 23 other agencies from across the region, including the Buffalo Police Department, the Erie County Sheriff’s Office, state police, U.S. Customs and Border Protection in Buffalo and Lewiston, West Seneca’s Winchester Fire Company and others. “They’re both new to this program so we’re excited and grateful that they decided to join,” said Steve

Catalano, account executive for blood donor services. Typically, the holidays are a slow time for blood donations, as many would-be donors become absorbed in the holiday rush. But the need remains as large as ever, especially with the onset of winter and increased traveling contributing to accidents and illnesses. “It’s a critical time of

year for blood donations,” Ess said. Catalano points out that a single blood donation can save up to three lives. The campaign is also encouraging more people to sign up to become organ donors. A single organ donor can save up to 60 lives.

Local toymaker Fisher-Price has donated a $500,000 scholarship to the Explore & More Children’s Museum’s $10 million Play It Forward campaign. The campaign aims to cover costs of the installation of The Tinkering Tank, a new larger facility planned for Canalside. “We’re obviously very thrilled with the gift,” said Explore & More spokesperson Jennifer Fee. “Fisher-Price has been a great partner since {the museum’s} inception.” The donation came as Explore & More is nearing the second year in their two-year drive to fundraise the new facility. With this latest gift, the campaign is coming up on $5 million raised thus far, Fee said. Other large donors have included the Community Foundation for a Greater Buffalo, the John R. Oishei Foundation and Wegmans supermarkets, which sponsored two exhibits with a combined value of more than $1 million. “We want to put a gold standard museum on Buffalo’s waterfront,” Fee said. The new facility will occupy 40,000 square feet inside a few waterfront building at the former Memorial Auditorium site in downtown Buffalo. The current facility, at 300 Gleed Ave. in East Aurora, is only about 6,000 square feet. Like the current facility, the Tinkering Tank area will feature large open rooms with several hands-on learning exhibits spread throughout. While the current facility serves about 50,000 people on site per year, the new facility is estimated to bring in more than 250,000 in its first year of operation, and about 200,000 annually in the years following. Fee called those estimates “conservative,” and said they had not factored in the tourism impact of the new HarborCenter on Buffalo’s waterfront. In addition to providing a new and exciting range of activities for children, the new Tinkering Tank is expected to bring a number of economic and educational benefits to the City of Buffalo.

Don Lorentz honored for under the radar public service What if one day we all woke up to a world devoid of generosity? It’s a concern that former Orchard Park High School marketing teacher Don Lorentz takes very seriously. As the 2014 OP Post of Fame Honoree, the 27th to be awarded as such, Lorentz is keenly aware of what’s required to keep traditions alive and well in our modern world. He’s made it a point throughout his career to live by example and help the up-and-coming generation understand the spirit of selflessness that allows a community to really flourish. “My biggest fear is that when my generation is gone, there’ll be nobody left to take up volunteerism,” Lorentz explained during a recent phone chat. “These are things above and beyond the call of duty, and I worry about who will make it their business to carry on traditions so they

be going to Canalside,” Fee said. “We believe it is absolutely a positive thing for Buffalo.” Fee added that a downtown location may also help improve school readiness in Buffalo children. The museum’s current location in East Aurora poses a difficulty for many poorer Buffalo families. Even the closest bus route, Fee pointed out, stops about a

mile away from the Gleed Avenue location. Explore & More plans to partner with a number of Buffalo-area schools and community groups in order to better prepare city children for school. “Moving to the city is a big leap for us in moving the needle on school readiness in buffalo,” Fee said. The Erie County Harbor Development Corporation

is currently reviewing construction bids for the new facility, and is expected to make its decision by March. Explore & More is eyeing a late 2016 opening for The Tinkering Tank. Fee said that so far they have been on track every step of the process.

Thoughts and tips to keep your resolution this New Years By Anna Cappello ORCHARD PARK SUN INTERN

Whether it’s saving money, eating smarter or managing stress, everyone has a goal to improve his or her lifestyle. And what better time to start than on Jan. 1? Well, the problem is that making a resolution seconds after the ball drops at a party is a lot easier than putting that thought into action. A wish to start eating healthier disappears as soon as the cake is put on the table. Managing stress seems like a great idea until life gets in the way. And that fit body you envisioned doesn’t seem so alluring when it’s time to put on the running shoes. So what are the key ingredients to keeping a resolution this 2015? The first step: set a goal that will improve your lifestyle that

is within reason. “You have to find it in yourself and say ‘this goal will better my life in some aspect,’” said Brooke Enderle, an Orchard Park High School student. “If you feel like giving up remember why you wanted it in the first place.” The next step is to form a specific step-by-step plan to create a dependable schedule in a specific time frame. Instead of “I want to exercise more” try “I will run on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 3.” This is an improvement over the classic “whenever I feel like it.” A vital part of keeping a resolution is to write the plan down. Put up sticky notes or set alerts on your phone as reminders. “What helps me in my New Year’s resolution is to set a picture of my goal as my screensaver,” said Kristina Powers, an Orchard Park resi-

dent. “So every time I look at my phone it’s there to remind me.” If saving money is your objective, keeping track of every purchased item forces you to acknowledge the amount spent. There are also apps that keep track of calorie intake and send out reminders for those wishing to lose weight. “You can always write the number of your weight loss goal on a sticky note and put it in the cupboard,” Powers added. “It might discourage you from reaching for that donut.” One of the most powerful tools for New Year’s resolutions is motivation. Have someone hold you accountable to follow up on your progress. And don’t get discouraged if the results show right away; with time and commitment, the wish you made on Jan. 1 will become a reality.

Hubbard Film Society to screen black comedy Bernie This month, The Hubbard Film Society presents the 2012 black comedy, Bernie, starring Jack Black, Shirley MacLaine, and Matthew McConaughey, and written and directed by the acclaimed Richard Linklater (Boyhood, After Sunrise, After Sunset, After Midnight). Based on a true 1996 story, Bernie is about a muchloved mortician (Black) in a small Texas town who befriends the town’s most cantankerous elderly widow (MacLaine). She dominates his life to the breaking point for Bernie, and he finally snaps. Despite his drastic actions, the town rallies behind him, much to the chagrin of the local D.A. (McConaughey). Linklater even used many of these locals in the film, expressing their feelings for Bernie. This film is especially relevant, because a huge turn of events just happened last spring that will surprise the audience! Bernie will be shown on

Sunday, Jan. 11 at 4 p.m. at the Parkdale Auditorium, 141 Girard Ave., East Aurora. Please join us, and stay for the post-film discussion. Our restaurant partner this month will be Taste. Coupons for a discount at the restaurant will be handed out at the film, with hopes you and your party can make it a “dinner and a movie” event. We thank Yvonne and her staff for supporting HFS! The Hubbard Film Society is a division of the Roycroft Campus Corporation. Tickets are $6 for members, and $8 for non-members. Discounted group rates of $6 per person are available in advance. Memberships can be purchased the day of the event – please come early to enroll. See you at the movies! For more information on HFS, please go to: www. roycroftcampuscorporation.com/HFS.html.

Village committee ‘honored’ to host holiday events

Photo Submitted

Joe Wales Orchard Park Village Trustee

In the last month, the Village Events and Celebrations Committee was honored to present two holiday events to our community. The first being Holiday in the Park on Dec. 6. At the WNY Railway Historical Society Train Depot, children got a chance to see Santa and Mrs. Claus. Each child received a treat from Santa’s helper elf and nearly 400 were distributed. Meanwhile at the Orchard Park Public Library, attendees had opportunities to participate in various activities; a performance from some very talented dancers from Mary Alice’s Dance Studio, a story hour with Mrs. Claus, and many different arts and crafts provided by the Orchard Park Recreation Department. The Department of Public Works building provided food and beverages. Tree trimming by event sponsors took place on the grounds nearby.

There were also horse and carriage rides and a fresh wreath and arrangement sale by the Orchard Park Garden Club. Overall, it was a great community event. It brought friends and neighbors together and kicked off the holiday season. More recently, the Village Events and Celebrations Committee hosted its third annual New Year’s Eve Celebration. North Buffalo Street was closed from Quaker Street to Princeton Place and a ceremonial ball drop took place at midnight. Local restaurants provided food, drinks and entertainment to ring in the New Year. This event was a great way for the Village Committee to bring the community together and help support the local restaurants that anchor our business district. Each restaurant had a very successful evening as their locations were full of customers all night. The Village Board would like to wish everyone a joyous New Year. If you have anything you would like to bring to the Village Board, we are available 24/7 at VillageOffice@OrchardParkVillage.org and the Village Office can be reached at 662-9327. It is hard to believe that my first year in office is complete and we recently welcomed in the New Year of 2015. As a result of their efforts we were blessed that our community did not experience any storm related deaths. With neighbor helping neighbor, we once again showed that Orchard Park is “The Town of Good Friends. With the challenges and accomplishments of 2014 now behind us, I look forward to the New Year with great anticipation. It is an honor to serve as Orchard Park Town Supervisor and a pleasure to work with all of our wonderful, dedicated town employees including Councilmen Gene Majchrzak and Mike Sherry. During mid-summer I met with the managers of every town department to assess their accomplishments during 2013/2014 and discuss their future needs to operate effectively and efficiently. This was an important step in crafting our 2015 budget. With input from Councilmen Gene Majchrzak and Mike Sherry, we created a budget that remained under the tax cap, while at the same time providing the services our residents expect and deserve. Orchard Park Librarian Jude Jacobs retires By Christopher Treacy ORCHARD PARK SUN CONTRIBUTOR

Some folks retire only to feel a void with all the additional time on their hands. Former Orchard Park Librarian Jude Jacobs, who retired from his position in late fall after an accumulated 15 years in the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library system, will not be one of those people. And he’s fine with that. Jacobs has spent many years juggling three careers, and while he says leaving the library was difficult, he will remain very active in his other vocational pursuits. As the owner of both a seven-acre farm with a half dozen horses and an anodizing factory in Depew, handed down from his father, Jacobs has no shortage of work to claim his waking hours. “This was the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make, a terrible dilemma for me, really... it’s a decision I came to with a heavy heart, but I knew for myself, my family, and for the community, it was the right

decision to make,” he said recently over the phone. At 55, the Depew native is well aware that he could have continued his work at the library, which took on numerous facets, for many more years. But he says it was time to give young Library Science graduates a chance to apply their skills. It’s a final gesture of generosity in a career that’s been built in the spirit of giving. Despite this, Jacobs says it’s the residents of Orchard Park who have enriched his life more so than the other way around, and he feels a debt of gratitude to the community he’s taken such great pride in serving. He is quick to point out that, particularly in Orchard Park, the library is more than a quiet reading room. “It’s definitely evolved over the years, and it’s now a hub for the community where people can come and fulfill any number of interests in their lives,” he said. “Outside performers, educational activities, computer classes... it’s no longer your traditional

‘come get a book and be quiet’ setting. My time at the library in Orchard Park was a blessing, enriched by the people I served every day, and the folks that take my place will continue to serve them with excellence.” Jacobs’ most recent position at the Orchard Park Library was a hybrid of community outreach and public relations. He also became a participant in the Orchard Park Youth Court program, overseen by longtime area educator E. David Rebmann, who would selectively send youths to work with him at the library. Jacobs found himself in the unexpected capacity of mentor, and when Cub Scout Pack 230 awarded him Citizen of the Year in 2012, he questioned whether he might have missed his true calling. “Young people are going to make mistakes,” he said. “These were kids that have sat in judgment by a board of their peers, which is how the Youth Court works, but I never really knew what their in-

dividual offenses were. I tried to teach them about making better choices and to recognize that feeling of conscience in their stomach, and in turn, they got to know me and my sense of humor.” Jacobs plans to spend more quality time with his wife, who he credits with graciousness and patience for the sacrifices she’s made that have allowed him to pursue multiple careers. She shares his passion for horses and together they plan to take up a trail-riding hobby and spearhead a Sunday trailriding club. He will continue to start his days by feeding the horses between 3:30 and 4 a.m. and plans to continue serving Rebmann’s Youth Court. In the end, it’s an enthusiasm for positively impacting the world around him that gives him the energy to keep going. “It’s the opportunity to make a difference that keeps me moving,” he said. “If I can positively impact someone’s life then I feel that’s a blessing. East Aurora High School Latin teacher Brian Serwicki has received word from the SUNY at Albany Classics Professor Dr. Angela Commito that two of our Latin classes have been approved for college credit. Tenth and 11th graders in Latin III will be able to apply for four units of college credit. After completing Latin III as well as the final exam, they will be eligible to receive a SUNY college transcript from the University at Albany for ACLL 102. Eleventh and 12th graders in Latin IV will be able to do likewise and receive a transcript for three units of college credit for ACLL 201. Students taking a Latin sequence therefore could possibly earn up to seven college credits before their senior year, and still take AP Latin their senior year. Students in Latin III bridge the gap between reading modified Latin literature at the beginning of the year, to authentic college level literature by the end of the year. At the beginning of the year students read modified versions of Cicero’s Catilinarian Oration, Suetonius’s biography of Augustus, Vergil’s Aeneid, Book II, Ovid’s Andromeda, and Catullus’s Lesbia, they go on to complete through Stage 40 of the Cambridge

Latin Course where they are introduced to unmodified versions of Martial and Ovid. Throughout the year, they also focus on Roman emperors, marriage customs, imperial politics, and the use of Latin in the legal profession. Students in Latin III finish the year with a brief survey of unadapted works by Phaedrus, Catullus, Horace, Ovid, and Vergil. Latin IV (ACLL 201) focuses completely on unadapted college level literature. They start the year with the Carmina Burana, and Martial’s Epigrams, and read selections from Horace’s Odes, Catullus, Ovid’s Metamorphoses, and Vergil’s Aeneid, Book IV. They also read prose literature in depth like Petronius’s Satyricon, Caesar’s Commentaries, and Cicero’s Pro Caelio. During our readings they study rhetoric, scansion, and later adaptations and influences our literature has inspired. This course also provides a sound basis for the intensive reading of Caesar and Vergil that the AP Latin course requires during one’s senior year. Lorentz instills importance of volunteering, community support Award from Page 1 “I want young people to understand that there’s more to business than just making money,” he said. “You have to look for ways you can support the community that’s supporting you, and I’ve really tried to instill that idea in every aspect of my career.” Lorentz received his Post of Fame award at the Post’s annual breakfast event, which was held at the Orchard Park American Legion Hall on Saturday, Dec. 13. The Post of Fame is not affiliated with any American Legion Post, however. It’s a local honor usually bestowed upon peo-

ple who quietly serve the Orchard Park community - a “behind-the-scenes” award, if you will. “When it started, the Post of Fame was just a group of individuals getting together for breakfast... maybe some town officials, sports figureheads, etc.,” he said. “They eventually decided to begin a tradition of awarding people in the community that work hard to make this a better place, but in less obvious ways.” Lorentz says that during his 30-year-plus teaching career, from which he retired in

2012, he continually found ways to bring his students out of their scholastic bubble and into the world at large, involving them in parades and designing business window displays. He often invited local figureheads to come speak in his classes and eventually came to be the designated chairperson for the annual Community Marketplace trade show, wherein business owners would attend as vendors, allowing students to see how they market themselves outside their usual brickand-mortar comfort zone.

Despite his concerns about selflessness and maintaining tradition, Lorentz can already see former students applying what he taught them in the local business community. It pleases him to know that he’s had a hand in rearing students who have gone on to find fulfillment in Western New York. It presents an interesting parallel to his son’s journey as a professional musician, having watched him chase a career all the way out to Los Angeles, only to come back here six years later and find surprising gratification

at home. “I talked to John Ricotta about letting me build a piano bar upstairs from Mangia’s in the M Lounge, and it’s like coming full circle,” he said. “I, too, have had a side career in music, and now my son and I both get to play at the piano bar it allows us both to achieve some fulfillment in a unique and unexpected way. “ Lorentz now works as Marketing Director for Main Mobility in Clarence, doing what he does best by helping to develop that company’s relationship with the local

community. He still lives in Orchard Park, stays involved with the OP Chamber of Commerce and relishes his musical connection to the town through the piano bar. “What I most treasure about being given the Post of Fame honor is that I’m not the person in the foreground that everybody recognizes,” he said. “I’m not looking to be the face of anything, but it’s reassuring to me when people in the background are given accolades for their contributions.”

We just go after each other all the time. It gives us the heart that we need to compete. It really gets us into the games.” In one-on-one matchups, it’s truly offense (Joe) versus defense (Nick). That’s the other advantage of being dif-

ferent players — they are able to practice their strengths at a level and in an environment not available to most. “The main thing that’s helped me be the offensive player that I am is (Nick) being such a great defender and us just playing against each other since we were little,” Joe said. “He’s thrown everything at me, I’ve seen it all. It helps me go against some of the best defensive players in Western New York.”

Even last season, when both were receiving time on varsity as freshmen, Nick sometimes guarded the opposition’s best scorer. Since, he’s grown to 6-foot3, added some bulk, and is covering premier players more regularly. Nick has the height to cover centers and at the same time possesses the proper agility and swiftness to go up against point guards. “He’s that kid who has always thrived on defense,”

EA coach Chris Koselny said of Nick, one of the Blue Devils’ best rebounders. “Even last year when he was 15 pounds less than he is now, we were putting him on other teams’ best players. I think that built up his confidence, knowing that we were willing to put him on the other team’s best player on some occasions.”

Freilicher a Quaker-of-all-trades for OP hoops By Aaron Garland SPORTS REPORTER

Dan Freilicher is a junior, but with all factors taken into consideration, it’s like he’s another senior for the Orchard Park boys basketball team. The Quakers have three seniors, but just two of them are returners. Other than that, Freilicher is the lone player who was on OP’s varsity prior to this season. He possesses leadership as

a tri-captain, athleticism and size (6-foot-4), a thorough understanding of the team’s system, an accurate outside shot, the ability to spread the ball around and active hands on defense. On top of it all, Freilicher was pulled up from JV after a handful of games his freshman year and he has been a steady presence for the Quakers since. His experience is plentiful, and on a young team, Freilicher provides elements more akin to what a senior might bring. “He really brings something to the table in just about every facet of the game,” OP coach Justin Abel said. “He sees the floor well and he’s not selfish with the ball. He’ll find the open guy and would rather get it to that

person than force a shot of his own. He’s what a lot of the other guys on the team aspire to try to get to.” In the Quakers’ scheme, Freilicher, who moved into the Orchard Park district from Lafayette, California, when he was 9, is classified as a three guard, but he can also play the four, if need be. He’s a bigger guard, but he prefers being on the perimeter rather than on the inside. And with the range he has, it’s a suitable fit out there. “That’s one of the reasons we keep him along the perimeter is because he has that ability,” Abel said.

Quaker swim continues undefeated streak By Aaron Garland SPORTS REPORTER

If Art Aungst’s Orchard Park boys swimming and diving team has a successful meet, that’s great. But for the longtime Quakers coach, nothing compares to a thorough, productive, hard-working practice. It’s a core of almost any coach, but especially to Aungst. Being pushed by external competition to be better is good and all, but a well-executed practice produces ideal long-term results, Aungst said. “I just get a lot more excited

about good practices than I do meets,” Aungst said. It may seem like a simple principle, but there is nothing basic about what the Quakers’ sound preparation has led to recently. They entered 201415 as owners of back-to-back undefeated seasons. And that streak has continued early this year, with OP winning its first two dual meets and then the North-South Challenge over Starpoint and Clarence while paired with East Aurora. “I think we really spend most of our time talking about how we can get faster,” Aungst said. “We found in the past that it’s the attention to detail on a daily basis that yields better results in the long run. “I always ask the guys ‘What’s the most important stroke in a race?’ The correct answer is ‘The one you’re doing right at the moment.’ We

try and instill that in them.” The early success is coming despite OP losing nine accomplished seniors who are being replaced at the front of the lineup by a bevy of underclassmen. But while the roster sports just two seniors, much of it returns from last season, so experience is existent. The team is picking up right where it left off a year ago because it is mimicking many of the practice tendencies that were so prominent over the last few seasons. It’s mostly a new-look squad in terms of who is leading the events for the Quakers. But with the parallels in work ethic between those undefeated groups and this one, it’s almost like that’s a non-factor. “I don’t think we have as much talent as we had last year because we just had a lot of older kids,” Aungst said. “It’s hard losing those

seniors because they were great swimmers and great leaders. But the people who are here now picked up a lot from them, so thus far the effort has been great. They are carrying it over.” The lone seniors on the Quakers are Jake Ortiz and Liam Hoover. They’re the captains and are crucial in the pool. Ortiz has already set a new school diving record multiple times this season, and also recorded an all-time high score at Clarence, which is home to many championship meets. He’ll be right in the mix to qualify for states once Section VI Championships roll around. Hoover is a top swimmer for OP. He was a state participant in the 200 IM last winter, and was part of the 200 free relay and 400 free relay teams that also went to the champion-

ships. While Hoover is strong in the IM, he swam to a lifetime best in the 100 fly earlier in the year, so Aungst said it’s still unclear what his main focus for states will be. What is perfectly apparent is that he’s the right person to guide OP. “He is my kind of leader because he really doesn’t say an awful lot,” Aungst said. “He just does what he needs to do. Everybody just needs to look around and do what Liam does and we’ll be fine.” Following the captains’ lead is an assortment of able, young swimmers. Sophomore Alec Hoch is a freestyler who has done well in the 50 and 100 thus far. Fellow sophomore Drew Deren is versatile, as he can go in the 200 IM, 100 fly and distance freestyles. Freshman Josh Blake is back while his brother, eighth grader Joe Blake, steps up to

varsity for the first time. They can each compete in several races. Junior Quinton looks good in the freestyle, Aungst said. Sophomore Sean Duffy, who is qualified for sectionals in the 100 breast, can provide OP with consistent points, as well. When Snowvember hit, two weeks of practice was wiped away from the Quakers, and, of course, practice is supreme. But Aungst said they responded commendably, which is the expectancy at Orchard Park. The amount of practice time has been down, but the quality of it, once again, has met the approval of the coach. “I’ve been very impressed with them so far because we’ve had a lot of issues to deal with,” Aungst said. “I’ve just seen that they don’t waste practice time, which is great.” Twitter: @Garland_SUN

OP, Frontier set longtime rivalry Junior is one of OP’s top scorers on aside for Girls Fed hockey “Quakers” from page 7

But it’s not only that, as the junior likes to find open guys in half-court sets — something not as easily done in the paint, he said — and his length makes him a tough defensive matchup for any guard. The path to get around his wingspan is a lengthy one, which allows the whole team more reaction time. Abel also said he has good anticipation when it comes to jumping passing lanes. Freilicher, one of OP’s top two scoring threats along with Wes Siegner, is just extremely versatile. He can play just about anywhere. But the three spot is home to him, and there is a whole lot to gain from putting him on the outside. “I’ve always preferred the guard,” Freilicher said. “I prefer to shoot and I just want to get my teammates the ball. I have always had a keen ability to pass and see the play and find my teammates.” Freilicher is used to performing all of the characteristics at

Goalie Mikaela DiTonto has backstopped the Orchard Park/Frontier hockey team to a 5-2-1 record.

By Marquel Slaughter SPORTS REPORTER

Frontier and Orchard Park are neighboring high school districts that are used to being rivals in every sport. The students and student-athletes come prepared to sporting events for contests that are going to be competitive, tough and loud, no matter if it is a girls sport or a boys. Things are a lot different on the ice for the girls, though. While Frontier and Orchard Parks have their own respective boys ice hockey teams, the girls are teammates on Jim McCarthy’s Frontier/ Orchard Park Fed hockey team. Kids away from the hockey team don’t understand how their Frontier or Orchard Park classmates can even play with another kid from their rival school. But for the ones on the team, it is a bond that cannot be broken. “All the other sports we play each other in, there is a huge rivalry,” said Ta-

tum Walber, a senior from Orchard Park on the girls ice hockey team. “But when we came together and it was our first year we were mostly excited about playing hockey together and we built a family. I don’t think the different schools affected any of it. We were just excited to be a part of something.” Walber is just a hockey player, but plenty of girls on the team play other sports for their schools. One of them is Grace Page. Also a senior, she is a student at Frontier and played soccer, too. Teaming up with OP was not a big deal for her since she knew some of the girls through Walber, already. “Tatum had a friend on the soccer team so I knew her, and then I met one other girl through Tatum (from the OP soccer team),” said Page. “So I only knew like two girls and everyone else I didn’t know. So it really wasn’t a big deal.” Hannah Roche played alongside Page at Frontier on the pitch and admitted that the joining of the rival schools for the ice hockey team was also easy because the girls knew each other from their travel hockey days. “We already played

with a majority of the girls on the team anyways,” said Roche, who played travel for West Seneca. “So we were already friends before varsity even started.” Olivia Jacobs is a senior from Orchard Park and remembers the first days of practice when she was in middle school like they were yesterday. While she joked about how she was terrified of the coaching staff then, she has grown accustomed to them now, as well as many of the other girls on the team, since she plays volleyball in the fall against Frontier at least two times a year. “Our games went back and forth nonstop,” said Jacobs. “It is kind of like soccer, where I hate playing Frontier in volleyball. But it is cool to see how we can come together in a different sport and actually build friendships.” Frontier/OP was on a fivegame winning streak before falling to Williamsville before break to sit at 5-2-1 on the year. “This is probably one of our best years,” said Walber. “We’re equipped with more skillful players. The younger girls are stronger. They’re better with their hands and they’re fast. “I’m excited. I think we can win the championship. I’m ready for this.”

the core of any effective guard. But a section of his game, and, really, self, he uncovered this year is leadership. It’s an added responsibility that he’s taken seriously, and carried out with the maturity of a senior. There is both high talent and potential on OP (2-4, 0-2 ECIC I, as of Dec. 28), Freilicher said. The trick is to get the team more versed in the varsity game with a majority of the roster being newcomers. Once that happens, “We can really do some damage,” Freilicher said. A paramount step to getting there is Freilicher and his cocaptains, senior Jake Heath and junior Kevin Looney, laying out the model for the rest of the Quakers. “I’ve taken on the role of teaching all my friends who I have played with for years, but haven’t played with on the varsity level,” Freilicher said. “It’s been helping me lead and teach them to get

on the same level we all need to be on. We’re improving. We’re getting there.” Freilicher is an ideal player at the forefront of the Quakers because he simply gets the sport. As Abel said, “Danny is a basketball player.” That’s taken him a long way. He knows OP’s offensive and defensive sets backward and forward. His basketball IQ is sky high. And Freilicher still has another year with Orchard Park after this one. That’s good news for Abel, who feels the Quakers are in good hands for the duration of his eligibility. “He’s really a student of the game,” Abel said. “That’s all he does is play basketball, and he tries to play against the best talent whenever he can. He’s been wonderful to have on the team.” Twitter: @Garland_SUN

Brothers push each other to be better through criticism “Twins” from page 7 Meanwhile, Joe stands slightly shorter at 6-foot-1, and Koselny applauded him for having “a great offensive mindset.” In the sophomores, East Aurora has a pair of athletes settling comfortably into their respective roles. “They have really turned themselves into two nice basketball players,” Koselny said. To get there, Nick noted he and his brother played every day over the summer. That’s been plenty evident to Koselny, who said that he has seen marked improvement in almost every facet of their games — ball handling, defensive awareness and the general knack for making plays. “The game has slowed down so much,” Joe said. “It’s a lot slower for me, and that’s made it a lot easier than it was last year.” “It’s amazing the change from last year to this year, just in terms of what we can contribute to the team,” Nick said. They are second coaches to each other, which also aids in the enhancement process. While Joe said they haven’t experienced any instances of twin telepathy — whether that’s realistic or a myth — they do share pointers and critiques with

JEFFREY T. BARNES

Nick Montgomery and twin brother Joe have had the advantage of practicing their skills against one another their entire basketball careers. one another. It can be harsh criticism, too. But it’s always constructive. “It’s easy to play together because I can be brutally honest with him,” Joe said. “He’s someone who I can talk to and be honest with, more so than anyone on the team.” While the practice sessions and basketball talks are productive, the most rewarding part of being teammates is just that — they are able to play on the same squad. Their appearances and playing styles

may differ, but they share an identical viewpoint when it comes to that. They’ll move forward the next couple years as key figures to the Blue Devils, pushing to progress together. “It’s awesome,” Nick said. “Being on a team with your brother, there is nothing like it. It’s just a great experience.” “It’s definitely been a fun ride,” Joe said. “There is no person I’d rather experience it with than my brother.” Twitter: @Garland_SUN
