Symphony orchestra looking for new members By Debra Kelly
COURIER CORRESPONDENT
There’s something undeniably moving about classical music – that’s why it’s lasted through the centuries, after all. Moving and mystical, it has the ability to touch the soul, and performing it for an audience is one of the most rewarding things a musician can do. The Cheektowaga Symphony Orchestra is looking for new members to join them in doing what they do best. Currently, their biggest need is for string players, and they are particularly interested in auditioning violinists.
The orchestra’s biggest need is string players.

The orchestra has been an integral part of the community since it was formed in 1960, a joint effort between the Town of Cheektowaga and the adult education programs in the school districts of Cheektowaga-Sloan, Cleveland Hill, Maryvale and Cheektowaga Central. Now, there are 75 members in the orchestra and they’re looking to add more talented musicians to their ranks. “Being in a community orchestra is quite remarkable when you think of who your fellow musicians are outside of rehearsals and concerts, said Brenda Small, principle oboist and general manager. “Of course, many of us are music teachers and freelance musicians, but there are also many players who are engi-
neers, lawyers, doctors, executives and scientists who love to perform. We are all one big, happy family who volunteer our time and talents for the joy of music. And that’s at the heart of what they’re looking for in prospective members. All the musicians of the orchestra are truly doing what they do – including putting in hours of practice and rehearsal time – because they love the performance and the music they play. Small has been a part of the orchestra for 20 years, and knows as well as anyone what kind of dynamic is present backstage. “I am extremely proud of each and every member and what we have accomplished together, she said. “We only want to be able to continue to bring beautiful
music to our community. Prospective members should be prepared to participate in the orchestra’s six yearly concerts, as well as rehearsals that take place from 7:30 to 10 p.m. on Tuesday evenings in the band room of the Cheektowaga High School. For those that don’t play an instrument but would still like to support the orchestra, donations are always a critical part of keeping the concerts free to the public. Donations to the organization are tax deductible, and help the hard-working volunteers keep presenting the soul-stirring performances that they do. For information on how to set up an audition, call 834-2738 or email personnel@cheektowagasymphony.com.

Life Transitions Center offers help for caregivers By Debra Kelly
COURIER CORRESPONDENT
Taking on the role of the caregiver to a loved one can be one of the most rewarding, stressful, overwhelming, difficult jobs a person can accept in life. It’s a lot of different things to a lot of different people at a lot of different times, and one thing that it always is to everyone is allencompassing. The Life Transitions Center, located on 150 Bennett Rd. in Cheektowaga, knows just that. From 6 to 7:30 p.m. on the first and third Wednesday of every month, they offer a support group for those people providing care to a friend or family member going through a serious illness. “In general, I don’t think caregivers realize how exhausting and all-encompassing being a full-time caregiver can be when they first take on the role,” said the group’s leader, Lacy Stewart. “Their main focus is their loved one
and what they need.” For a lot of people who find themselves taking on the caregiver role, it might not be known how long they’re going to be taking on the position, or what’s going to happen down the road. Because we’re reaching out to help a loved one, that’s the most important thing to us in those moments. And it’s during those times when it’s most important to take care of yourself, even though that might be the farthest thing from your mind. Stewart likens it to being on an aircraft when the oxygen masks come down. It’s always necessary to put your own on, first, before helping others, and it’s about making sure you’re strong enough and prepared enough to take on the challenges that need to be faced. “The demands of being a full-time caregiver often make caregivers feel like they don’t have time to take care of themselves, even if they want to,” Stewart said. “Most
caregivers put the needs of their loved one before their own needs.” And that can be an incredible burden, one that builds up before you’re even aware that it’s piling on your shoulders and wearing you down. The Life Transitions Center support group is designed to be a place where caregivers can recharge, where they share with others in the same situation all of their tips on how they take care of their own needs, find outlets that they enjoy, and deal with the pressures of responsibility. Everyone at the group is going through a similar thing, and sometimes, it can be a valuable thing just to know that you’re not alone. The group also gives people a safe place to say what they need to say, unloading thoughts and feelings that they may not want to burden anyone else with, or that they may feel guilty about telling others. With everyone going through the same thing,
everyone else understands. At a time when someone might feel even more alone and more isolated, it’s an incredibly valuable thing to be surrounded by people who absolutely understand every moment and every thought of every day. Being a caregiver can be stressful and it can be overwhelming, but there’s also community resources – like this one – that are there to help those who are so focused on helping others that they occasionally forget about their own well-being. Stewart says that among the other things that she sees group members sharing, it’s a love for the person that they’re caring for. “I think even if caregivers knew in advance the demands of being a fulltime caregiver, they would still take on the responsibility because the decision comes from the heart. It’s a labor of love.” To register for the group, call 836-6460 or email Lynn Lyons at llyons@ palliativecare.org.
Canisius presents ‘Broad Matter’ studio art show
ArtsCanisius presents “Broad Matter,” a collection of female portraits and places that matter to painter, illustrator and muralist Alixandra Martin. An opening reception will be held 5 to 7 p.m. Fri., March 6 at the Peter A. and Mary Lou Vogt Gallery in the Andrew L. Bouwhuis Library, 2001 Main St. in Buffalo. A native of Sarasota, FL, Martin is a self-taught
artist who has traveled all over the world to study and create art. She has maintained a gallery with working studio art space for the past decade. Martin exhibits her work, including large-scale mural projects, throughout the U.S and Canada, and has illustrated an award-winning children’s book. According to Martin, “I travel as much as possible to open my lens through which I see
culture and history, art and architecture. Creating art is the voice in which I have always used, expressing relationships and humanity to understand and identify with diversity in cultures through the constructed image. I do not intend to covey explicit meaning; I mean to stir curiosity.” The exhibit continues through April 3 during regular library hours. For hours and other informa-
tion, visit canisius.edu/library or call 888-2900. The ArtsCanisius series at Canisius College presents concerts by professional musicians, including members of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and Canisius faculty, art shows and lectures by professional artists, as well as student recitals. For more information, contact the Fine Arts Department at 888-2536.

Resident unhappy with lack of sidewalk clearing I have lived in Cheektowaga for a few years and my husband has been here for about 8 years. We have a high energy dog that requires several walks a day. We find it very frustrating when we go to walk our dog and find that many home owners are not shoveling their sidewalks. What’s even more frustrating is that because we walk a great deal we are pretty familiar with many of the home-
owners. It’s aggravating to know that some of these unshoveled homes are inhabited by homeowners that are younger than my husband and I and appear very healthy. I’m really not sure what their excuse for not shoveling is. I was a single female in my 20s living in Buffalo prior to moving to Cheektowaga and whenever it snowed, at minimum, I made sure my sidewalk was shoveled. If it
was too difficult for me to do, I would pay someone to do. Please be responsible and clear snow around your home. It’s dangerous for people to have to walk in the street or they can get hurt on your property trying to navigate and uncleared sidewalk. Aren’t there fines that can be imposed if this is a chronic problem as well? Dana M. Crestview Avenue
Local man frustrated with electric company My issue is about the NYSEG in Cheektowaga. They put in a new light pole almost a year ago , and they left the other behind the new one. I called them and asked a couple of times when they were going to take the old one out. However, they said it was up to me to call the phone company and the c a b l e c o m p a n y ( Ti m e
Warner) to get the wires off the old pole. Then the last one to get the wires off will take the pole out of the ground. I called the two companies, and it’s still not out. By the way, the electric company didn’t call me asking if they can put in a new pole and leave me to call the other companies to do the rest of their job.
I have a small lot. There is a tree on my front lawn, a city tree on the other side of the sidewalk and now two light poles. Do you think it’s right for the land owner to have to call and complain about getting a light pole taken out? Timothy Riley Alaska Street

Protect your heart (and others’) for Heart Month By Debra Kelly
COURIER CORRESPONDENT
It’s no coincidence that February is Heart Month. People are already thinking about hearts, after all, before, during and after Valentine’s Day. That also means that it’s the perfect time to sign up for one of the American Red Cross’s classes, geared toward not just protecting hearts but saving lives. The Red Cross offers a number of classes that might just allow you to save someone’s life, including one on First Aid, CPR, and AED use and practices. There are a number of different types of courses to chose from, with lengths that vary from two to five hours and end with a twoyear certification from the Red Cross. Those that take the courses are also given
access to free, online refresher courses. The first aid section of the courses teaches the basics – how to treat common injuries like burns and cuts, and how to deal with stabilizing individuals who have been in accidents or suffered head and neck injuries. The CPR section of the course deals with knowing how and when to perform CPR, while the AED section of the course covers something that might be a little less familiar. An AED is an automated external defibrillator, and it’s used in the treatment of sudden cardiac arrest. Sudden cardiac arrest, or SCA, is often fatal if not treated immediately and correctly, and it’s estimated that for every minute that passes after it happens, a person’s chance of survival drops by 10 percent.
And according to Jay Bonafede, Chief Communications Officer for the American Red Cross’s Western and Central New York Region, it’s absolutely not unheard of that they see people who have taken their courses use their skills and their knowledge to save lives. While the majority of the classes are taken on location with a certified Red Cross instructor, there are also a number of classes available online for anyone to take from the comfort of their own home – and that includes the refresher courses. Instructors recommend taking a refresher course about once every three months, and being able to do that online makes it easy to keep up with your knowledge and skills. In the classroom, participants will learn all the OS-

in a party atmosphere. While on tour the past couple years, the group had the chance to teach music in schools on an international level. These experiences proved the value of music in the classroom, especially when considering the language barrier: “In Hong Kong, we taught kids for an hour and a half and with the language barrier they didn’t really understand us until we started to perform. It’s a potent reminder of how music is a language that everyone can speak, says Richard Steighner, another member of The Exchange. Since The Sing-Off, the guys have been touring like crazy and created three original albums, starting with “Get Ready, then “The Good Fight and most recently “Pursuit, which came out the first day of tour, Feb. 17. The third album describes where they are right now in their lives: “The third

Local Professor featured in poetry anthology By Debra Kelly
COURIER CORRESPONDENT
For Villa Maria professor Joyce Kessel, there’s something infinitely personal not only about the act of writing poetry, but of reading it aloud. It’s only when the work is read out loud that you truly share with others, and it’s when you share it with others that it absolutely, positively turns into something special. “Poetry doesn’t let you lie,” she said. “But it’s also the most personal things that are the most universal.” Most recently, her work is being featured in a collection of poetry that was put together specifically to spotlight the best poetry in Western New York. The collection is called A Celebration of Western New York Poets, and is edited by Patricia Tansey. Kessel’s included works include “Buffalo Icons”, “Intonations”, and “At Abiquiu”.
As a professor and as the chair of the Liberal Arts department at Villa, Kessel is also making sure that she passes on her love for poetry to her students. For her, it’s not enough just to write the words and then keep them from the world; she makes sure that they’re not just learning to go through the motions of tapping into the innermost feelings to find the words, but also that they’re putting themselves out there and doing the most important part of of writing – sharing. “I’ve had the chance to do a lot of observing on what writing means to my students and what it means to me,” she said. “It’s so important to read your work out loud; it gives you the chance to listen to your own voice. I know how difficult the process can be, and I wouldn’t put my students through it if I didn’t go through it myself.” In addition to reading in class, Kessel can often be found at various poetry read-
ings around Western New York. There’s something invaluable that an audience gives you, and truly amazing poetry gives so, so much back to the audience as well. It’s the most personal themes – themes like love and loss – that everyone can relate to, in one way or another. Although they’re often the most difficult to share, they’re also the ones that connect us all – and that’s what makes Kessel’s poetry so moving. Her last book, Describing the Dark, is still available through Saddle Road Press (saddleroadpress.com) and on Kindle. There, her work focuses on the dark grit that surrounds so many moments in life, for us, for our ancestors, and for everyone who lives in Buffalo and beyond. A Celebration of Western New York Poets is currently available through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and will be available at a number of local bookstores.

Find out what the chamber of commerce is all about By Debra Kelly
COURIER CORRESPONDENT
The Cheektowaga Chamber of Commerce will be holding a special, informal social event at which they’re hoping to see all those who aren’t yet members. The Cheektowaga CSI: Chamber Social and Informational Meeting will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 26 at the Cheektowaga Residence Inn, 107 Anderson Rd. “Cheektowaga CSI is a fun and informational event for those looking to join the Cheektowaga Chamber of Commerce, new members, and current members,” said Debra Liegl, President and CEO of the Cheektowaga Chamber of Commerce. “New, future and current members of the Chamber attending the event will find out the clues of their membership, identify information to help their business, discover and create new contacts and examine all the possibilities of Chamber membership.” Even those who have been members for some time might uncover something new at the event – a chamber membership comes with many, many benefits, and oftentimes, business owners are so wrapped up in the hectic dayto-day that it’s easy to forget how many helpful tools are right at their fingertips. In addition to the regular networking opportunities and meetings, the chamber also offers a number of purchasable marketing opportunities from being featured on their web site and in their membership directory, to the chance to purchase advertising space in their newsletter, which is mailed out monthly. Members are also opt to be
spotlighted with an article in the newsletter, include a flyer in the mailing, and get help with a direct mail campaign. There’s also a number of other member services available to those that participate. The chamber offers group health insurance plans from several providers, giving business owners another opportunity to provide affordable health and dental care to their employees. They also offer a number of training opportunities and programs on a regular basis throughout the year, often in aspects of business that can be overlooked and fall to the wayside when owners are juggling all that goes along with running a business. Those over at the chamber also act as an invaluable voice and advocate for small business owners around the area. Interacting on a regular basis with numerous contact in agencies like the Small Business Development Center, the Cheektowaga Economic Development Corporation, and the Town of Cheektowaga, the chamber brings questions and concerns to those that need to hear them in order for things to change and grow. At the event, prospective members will be able to network with those that have seen all the benefits the chamber has to offer, and ask any questions while making evervaluable contacts. Hors d’oeuvres will be provided by Bravo Cucina Italiana, Texas de Brazil and the Cheektowaga Residence Inn. Those that attend will also receive a free gift and have the opportunity to participate in prize drawings. The event is free, but reservations are recommended and can be made by calling 684-5838.

Local sports Bears hope to make noise in postseason
Sullivan a leader for Eagles
By Mike Pidanick
SPORTS CORRESPONDENT
As far as Section VI playoff brackets go, there might not be one more competitive than Class B2. Defending champion Buffalo East has the likes of Cleveland Hill, Wilson, Fredonia, Health Sciences and Lackawanna to deal with when the postseason gets started. Nobody’s talking about John F. Kennedy – at least not yet. But the vastly-improved Bears have the talent and have long shown they’re not going to be eliminated without a fight. “We are really looking to make some noise this year; it’s been a long time since we have,” JFK coach Tony Krupski said. “With this group, I really believe we have a chance to advance a little bit this year.” After winning just twice in 2013-14, Kennedy has been competitive just about every night this season and look to finish the regular year with a winning record. “We have to pick it up, this is playoff time,” senior standout Joe Braniecki said. “We have a lot of confidence. Everyone’s been playing really well and we’re doing even better than I was expecting.” Braniecki has been the top guy for the Bears this sea

No matter the sport, chances are that Anthony Sullivan has the ball in his hands. The Cleveland Hill senior has been a focal point in basketball and was in football as well. And it’s no coincidence that both teams won division championships. “He finds a way to get to the basket,” Cleveland Hill hoops coach Jason Przybysz said “ One of the keys for him is ball control. When he distributes the ball and finds the open man, he does a better job for us.” Sullivan leads the Eagles in scoring (14.1 points per game), assists (28) and steals (2.8). And again, he has stepped into a major role as Cleveland Hill was forced to replace two of its top three scorers from last year’s club. “It’s definitely a good feeling that in my two seasons here, we were division champs both years,” Sullivan said after the Eagles clinched the ECIC IV crown with a 76-60 win over John F. Kennedy on Feb. 10. The division title was the fourth straight for Cleveland Hill, which entered its final game with a 23-1 mark in ECIC IV during Sullivan’s varsity career and a 45-2 mark since the start of the 2011-12 season. Local sports JFK Bears looking to make noise in the postseason “Bears” from page 10 son, leading the team in scoring, rebounding, blocks and dunks. But he’s not the only weapon the Bears have - and if JFK wants to be a major player in the postseason, everyone knows it will take everyone on the roster to get that job done. Braniecki leads JFK in scoring with 18.8 points per game but the senior tri-captain knows his teammates are also very capable of putting the ball in the basket. “That’s what we try to do every game is get everyone involved,”
Braniecki said. “We don’t want to have a few try to score 20-plus every game, we need everyone to contribute.” Contributions from Braniecki, as well as Cale Byczkowski, Josh McMahon, Shawn McPhail, Brendan Fox and others will be needed if the Bears are going to compete with some of the big dogs in Class B2. A year ago, JFK didn’t win a game until February and had just two victories all season long. The Bears had last year’s win total topped
by Game 4 this year and are on the cusp of a winning record. They’ve also had some down-tothe-wire losses against fellow Class B2 teams Cleveland Hill and Lackawanna – and also a decisive loss to each of those clubs. When the ball is tipped on the postseason, the Bears hope to have their best version on display. “We’ve been a little inconsistent; that’s been an issue for us,” Krupski said, “but we’re hoping to put it all together. This is when we need to step up.”
Braniecki leads JFK in scoring with 18.8 points per game.
Joe Braniecki JFK
In his third varsity season, John F. Kennedy senior forward Joe Braniecki has led a turnaround season for the Bears with his scoring, rebounding, blocks and dunks. The 6-foot-6 standout has averaged more than 19 points per games this season for JFK and reached double-figures in scoring in each game, headlined by a career-high 37 points in a non-league tilt versus West Seneca West. The tri-captain averaged 20 points per game in JFK’s first four February games.
NCAAA to host a fundraiser The North Cheektowaga Amateur Athletic Association is hosting a meat raffle fundraiser on Saturday Feb. 21 from 6-10 p.m., at Leonard Post 2450 on Walden
Avenue in Cheektowaga. A $5 donation gets you into the doors (which open at 5 p.m.) and allows you all you can eat and drink. Door prizes
include a dinner for two and one night’s stay at Russell’s Steaks Chops and More Hotel. All proceeds go to benefit the NCAAA basketball program.

Sullivan a leader for Cleveland Hill Eagles “Sullivan” from page 10 team last season with 6.7 points per game but with the graduation of Aaron Phillips and Jared Watkins, the Eagles needed high performance levels to rise. And it has. “I’m just looking to control the ball and lead the break if I have to,” Sullivan said. “I’m just
doing whatever it takes to help win.” That’s what he did in football, as well, quarterbacking the Eagles to a second straight Class C North championship and a 6-3 overall record. He threw for 533 yards and six touchdowns and added 353 yards and three more
scores rushing. Now, he’s looking to end his basketball career in similar style. The Eagles are part of a Class B2 bracket that is as competitive as any in Section VI. Defending champion Buffalo East, as well as Wilson, Fredonia, Health Science and Lackawanna
are among the teams fighting for a trip to Buffalo State College. “Whoever we play, it’s going to be a good game,” Sullivan said. “So we just have to be ready for that. We’re playing really well right now and we just have to keep it going if we want to advance.”
“I’m just looking to control the ball and lead the break if I have to,” Sullivan said.

HOME IMPROVEMENT Cost-saving winter tips can keep your family safe and warm foundation walls, and plug any gaps with fiberglass insulation. Dial Down the Thermostat—Most people can live comfortably with a temperature around 68 degrees. Setting it lower than that when you’re away or asleep will also save on energy. Consider purchasing a programmable thermostat that will lower the temperature automatically during off-peak times. Replace or Insulate Windows—Consider replacing old windows with energy-efficient ones, or put up window-insulating kits. The clear plastic film can reduce drafts, saving energy and avoiding the costs of window replacement. Fill Gaps with Caulk Sealants—Replace old caulk joints around your window and door trim (both inside and outside) that can shrink and leak over time. Use a spray
foam sealant to fill in the gaps left around pipes, wires, TV cables or bath and dryer vents. Get an Energy Audit— Most local utilities can arrange a home energy audit to pinpoint where to focus your winterizing efforts. Thermal-imaging cameras, which use infrared technology to show where heat is escaping the house, are available to rent in many areas, so try one out before winterizing to know exactly what needs to be done. Install a Source of Backup Power—Because power outages are also a concern during winter storm season, FEMA recommends investing in a source of backup power, like an automatic home standby generator from Generac, that automatically provides power for heat and electricity when there is a power outage. ators turn on as soon as the power goes out and stay on until utility power is restored. That means homeowners won’t lose money on holiday food costs if the refrigerator won’t work during a power outage. And homeowners can still work remotely, even when the power is out, plus families won’t have to relocate to a hotel. As a leader in power equipment serving residential, light commercial, industrial and construction markets, Generac’s products are available through a broad network of independent dealers, retailers, wholesalers and equipment rental companies. Basic winterizing for a home can be done for less than $200, but by investing in installations like attic insulation and a Generac home standby generator, you get the best level of protection from winter storms.

Sasquatch is a very handsome 3 year old Persian mix kitty who is desperately looking for a home. He apparently was left to fend for himself by his previous owners because when Second Chance rescued him he was VERY matted and living alone on the cold streets of Buffalo. Sasquatch would prefer a home where he can be the “King of the Road or a home that has Felv/FIV kitties in it already, as he is positive for both. He gets along well with other cats and loves to cuddle. Sponsored by Community Papers of WNY
