Trocaire students express gratitude to their South Buffalo neighbors Recently, the Student Radiologic Technology Club at Trocaire College decided to undertake a “Town and Gown” initiative to express appreciation to the neighbors adjacent to the College. Club members assembled holiday gift bags containing goodies and treats for the neighbors to enjoy during the holidays. Tucked inside each bag was a special letter, expressing appreciation and thanks for all that the neighbors do for the Trocaire community. Then students hit the streets – Whitfield, Choate and Belvedere – hand delivering each of the 80 gift bags to residents within a few blocks of the College. Every day the neighbors surrounding Trocaire College experience many students and employees heading to class and work. The students involved in the Radiologic Technology Club wanted to find a way to say thank you, on behalf of the College

community, to the neighbors who embrace Trocaire as a partner in their neighborhood. Radiologic Club co-president Victoria Lyle said, “We are visitors and we appreciate that they welcome us into their neighborhood.” During this special holiday season, and throughout the year, students, staff and faculty of Trocaire College are especially proud and grateful to be a part of the wonderful South Buffalo community, all taking part in education in the spirit of the Sisters of Mercy. To learn more about Trocaire’s “Town and Gown” initiative and read up on other news and information from the College, visit our Trailblazer blog and subscribe for the latest updates: http://www.trocaire.edu/trailblazer-blog/

“Right now, it is hard to think of warmer days where dozens of area youths are playing baseball on the four baseball diamonds at Okell Field, but it will be here before you know it,” stated Matt Fisher, Boardmember for South Buffalo Baseball Association. And he’s right. Believe it or not, spring is just nine weeks away. And sign-ups for the South Buffalo Baseball teams are happening now. The first scheduled sign up date is Thursday, Jan 22 from 6:30 to 8:30pm at Tosh Collins Community Center, 212 Cazenovia St, with additional dates at Tosh Collins during the same time on Fri, Feb 6 and Thursdays, Feb 12 and 19. You can also sign up at the Connors Kait Harrity Memorial Pool at 626 Abbott on Saturdays, Jan 24 and March 7 from 9am to noon. The league has been a tradition in the South Buffalo area for more than 50 years with many of the parents and grandparents in attendance being former players on the fields. Sponsors are needed for this upcoming season. Sponsorship of a team is great for the league and the community. Twenty new team sponsors are needed this season to help support the costs of making improvements to the league and for much needed equipment. The sponsorship cost this year

You will be honored with a team photo, sponsorship recognition at the 2015 fundraiser event, and your business will be identified on the league’s website with your sponsorship name and logo. Businesses and organizations interested in taking advantage of this opportunity can contact Fundraising Chairman Ben Coughlin (335-1110). Sponsors will be accepted until Jan 30. High school students looking for a fun option for community service hours are invited to assist with the base coaching, assisting at the concession stands, working on field maintenance, park clean-up and other related duties. Retired residents and others seeking to support the league are also welcomed to volunteer. Contact President Jim Craver (3806336) or Jerry Isch (374-2030) to find out more about available

volunteer opportunities. This year will see new improvements to the league. You will notice an increased use of certified umpires, improved social media sharing of information on Facebook and through emails, and further development of teams to participate in outside tournaments. “We are looking forward to an exciting year of baseball in 2015 with our new added improvements,” shared Fisher, “And as always the most important part will be shaking hands with the other team after the game and getting and ice cream or piece of pizza for the effort!” The 2015 season promises to be fun for the players and parents alike. Sign up, sponsor, volunteer, get involved and find out why the South Buffalo Baseball Association has been one of the longest running seasonal activities for the children in our area.

By Catherine Miller COURIER CORRESPONDENT

Take four hours and three venues as you travel to the heart of Larkinville and what do you get? One great day of winter fun in Buffalo as Larkinville presents its First Annual Larkinville Ice Fest on Saturday, Jan 31 from 11am – 3pm. This one-of-a-kind festival will incorporate various venues, local artists, writers, speakers, beer brewers, wine makers and ice sculptors for a unique mix of entertainment. “We are excited to extend the fun beyond Larkin Square to invite the public to the first Larkinville event which includes our new Larkinville neighbors, The Hydraulic Hearth and Flying Bison Brewery,” stated Leslie Zemsky, the ever-imaginative Director of Fun at Larkin Square, “Folks could extend the fun and do some skating at Canalside before or after a visit to Larkinville. Buffalo embraces winter and we do too! The Larkin Filling Station will feature several speakers beginning with Chris Hawley who will speak about Sweet Peggy

Students at the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute will perform ice carving demonstrations at Flying Bison Brewery during the upcoming Larkinville Ice Festival. O’Neill from 12:30- 1pm. Hawley will discuss how Buffalo actress and singer Peggy O’Neill took New York and London by storm on the stage, after making her way up the school play ladder to stardom – and it all started at St. Patrick’s School on Emslie Street. Ethan Cox will then present an informal chat from 1:15 – 2pm on his book Buffalo Beer: A History of Brewing in the Nickel City. Cox, one of the founders of Community Beer Works, will be available for a book signing as well as his discussion on the history of

Buffalo’s finest beverage. From 2:15 – 3pm join Carl Schmitter and Frank Weber, of Chateau Buffalo and Buffalo Distilling Co., will join the local speaker series with discussions on their latest projects. Across the street the Hydraulic Hearth will feature live music along with their newly formed Saturday tradition of the Bagels and Booze brunch. Join them for the morning opening of artist Mickey Harmon’s new exhibit, “A Pie-Eyed Night with Peggy O’Neil”. Flying Bisons will be

And don’t forget to visit a food truck or two. Whether nestled in the warmth of one of the venues with great food, drink and company, or enjoying a stroll through Larkinville in the crisp winter air, this Saturday afternoon event is sure to bring the monotony out of the winter months. It seems Buffalo is embracing its unique characteristics more than ever. It’s a great time to get out and about and become re-introduced with all that Buffalo has to offer yearround. The Winterfest at Canalside, sponsored in conjunction with HarborCenter, was held Jan 9-11 and saw three days of cold temps and blowing snow in the Canalside area, but that didn’t seem to keep the coldweather lovers home during the inaugural Winterfest event. While Sunday proved to be the mildest day for the three day event, Friday and Saturday were still met with enthusiasm by the droves of skaters and others that came to the Ice at Canalside. “Wind, what wind,” joked one skater as he tried to keep up with his two children, “You just have to keep moving.” That seemed to be the trick as all those with skates and ice bikes were continually in motion. While inside the HarborCenter the ice was utilized for the Women’s World Hockey Championship

Buffalo Bills Hall of Fame Quarterback, Jim Kelly, along with the Board of Directors at the Kelly for Kids Foundation are pleased to announce their 2014 grant recipients (list attached). Organizations were awarded their grants at the eighth annual luncheon, which took place at Ilio DiPaolo’s Restaurant Even though Jim faced a challenging year in 2014 and had to be absent for his own tournament, everyone rallied around him and the Jim Kelly Celebrity Classic was able to achieve another successful year. Through continued support, the Foundation is able to grant over $200,000 to charities in our community. One representative from each organization will be present at the luncheon; we have randomly selected a handful of these organizations to briefly share their story and share what they hope to accomplish in the coming year. The event has become a catalyst in providing local charities the opportunity to get together and become familiar with each other. It not only sets the stage for opportunities but it provides these organizations with the ability to assist and collaborate as a unified force

Local sports Shoot-happy Harrison helpful to Timon hoops’ attack By Mike Pidanick SPORTS REPORTER

JEFFREY T. BARNES

Timon’s Joe Harrison (right) tries to block a shot during a recent game against Will South. Harrison is third on the Tigers in points per game.

As it gets into the heart its Monsignor Martin Athletic Association schedule, the Bishop Timon-St. Jude boys basketball team knows it needs kids with the confidence to take big shots with the ballgame on the line. The Tigers have a roster full of such players and sophomore Joe Harrison has proven to be as fearless as anyone. “He’s one of our best shooters and we certainly like having him take a big shot,” Tigers coach Joe Mihalics said. “He’s a guy that’s going to keep shooting and when you do that, it’s going to go in.” Harrison is averaging 10.4 points per game,

ranking third on the team, and also leads the team in 3-pointers made and attempted. And he has shown that he will be at his best when his team needs him the most. Perhaps Harrison’s best game came shortly before Christmas as the Tigers picked up a quadrupleovertime win at St. Mary’s of Lancaster on Dec. 23. He led Timon with 21 points, including some big 3-pointers in the overtime sessions. “My teammates set me some screens and I just make the shots I can,” Harrison said that night after an 82-80 victory. “We all work well together to try to get a win.” The Tigers have had a variety of standouts on any given night this season and they expect that to continue going forward. In fact, Harrison is one of five Timon players averaging in double figures, joining fellow sophomore Will Lamar (14.2 points per game), senior Derick Simp-

son (13.3), junior Quinton Lamar (10.2) and senior Claudious Modi (10.2). “We have a lot of guys back that can shoot,” Mihalics said. “It’s nice to have a variety of guys we can turn to every night.” Timon moved into midJanuary with a 5-4 record and that included a championship at the Clarence Holiday Tournament with wins over Fredonia and Iroquois. The Tigers split their first two MMAA contests, following the win over St. Mary’s with a tough fourpoint loss to St. Joe’s. Close games have been commonplace for Timon, which has already collected three two-point wins on the season. As the Tigers continue to improve, the goal is to turn some of the close losses into more big wins. “We’re just getting better every week,” Harrison said. “We have a lot of big conference games we’re looking forward to. And every week, we’re getting better and better.”

Notre Dame Academy basketball teams continue strong play • The first/second grade team basketball team at Notre Dame Academy, coached by Greg McOwen and Joe Insera, played well in an 18-9 loss to Mary Queen of Angels. Notre Dame got scoring from Joey McOwen (three points), Kelly Beale, Joe Insera and Joe Swiderski. Isabella Scarcello and Meagan Bell had strong games at guard. • The fourth grade girls played a scrimmage during

halftime of a varsity game featuring Mount Mercy Academy and Holland. Their play drew cheers and applause from the crowd. • The fifth grade Saints (boys), coached by Kristie Moore, looked forward to playing OLV after a long winter break. It was a close game until the fourth quarter when Nick Moore and Evan Coronado scored to put the game away with a final score of 16-9. Moore and Coronado,

along with Joshua Bentkowski, had four points each, Billy Paladino and Jonah Sherrieb each had a bucket. Paladino, Coronado and Sherrieb led the team with five steals each, as well as Moore and Anthony Snyder having four each and Brody Krombach with two. Ryan Adamy and Brendan Dargavel chipped in with strong performances on defense for the Saints. Everyone on the team had at least one rebound.

• The fifth/sixth grade girls, coached by Jack Hoffstetter, lost to NCCS, 13-12, in a game in which the lead changed three times. Hannah Fredo and Mary Snyder led Notre Dame scorers with four points. Other scorers were Aubrey Monaco and Athena Parisi.

Local sports Monsignor Martin puck progressing with playoffs approaching By Mike Pidanick SPORTS REPORTER

The goal all along for the Monsignor Martin girls hockey team has been to steadily improve day-by-day — and that’s exactly what the team has done. MMAA moved into midJanuary at 5-2 overall and also owns victories over the two teams responsible for its losses. And with playoff time not too far away, Monsignor Martin is working toward playing its best when it matters the most. “As a coach, my main concern is that the girls are improving as a team and individually and that’s what they’re doing,” MMAA coach Linda Mroz said. “They’re doing great, they’re gelling as a team and they’re really becoming a tight-knit family. We have a great group of kids.” A big sign of MMAA’s improvement was on display at the Lincoln Arena on Jan. 6. Less than a month after a sound defeat at the hands of defending Section VI champion Kenmore, Monsignor Martin persevered for a 1-0 win on the road against the Devil Dogs. The big win improved Monsignor Martin’s record to 5-2 and as usual cemented its status as one of the teams to watch out for going forward. “We’re playing great,” said Sacred Heart Academy sophomore forward Kaitlin Drew-Mead, who netted the game-winner with just seconds remaining against Kenmore. “We’re doing a lot of things well. We have a lot of big game players and everyone is doing their part.” Monsignor Martin’s perse-

JEFFREY T. BARNES

The Monsignor Martin girls hockey team is comprised of a handful of Mount Mercy Academy student-athletes this season. verance was on full display in the third period of a hard-fought game against Kenmore. MMAA was whistled for three straight penalties in the final minutes, but the penalty-killers did their work. And when Kenmore was called for a final-minute penalty, Monsignor Martin

cashed in during a 4-on-4 when Drew-Mead deflected home a shot from the point by Maeve Christ (Mount St. Mary). “We’ve been working on low, hard shots and tipping in front” Mroz said. “So they just proved that I know what I’m talking about and I’m not

speaking some third-world language. “We knew we just had to stick to our game. The penalties that come, we just have to play through it. We practice power play and we practice penalty kill. We just had to find a way and the girls did that.”

Drew-Mead was the league’s top goal scorer as a freshman and she’s been just as dynamic as a sophomore. A year ago, she had the luxury of having the since-graduated Rachel Lenard on her line, but this year, Drew-Mead was taken her game to the next level. In a preseason interview,

Mroz said of Drew-Mead: “I told her, ‘You need to step up,’ and she said, ‘I’m ready for the challenge, coach. I’m glad you put me here.’” And she has proven her confidence on the ice. Through the second Kenmore game, she had five goals and six assists.

Another Clue To Help You Spot Sampson

Have you spotted Sampson yet? Community Papers of WNY and LAMAR Outdoor Advertising have joined together to welcome Sampson to his hometown. The Buffalo Zoo’s newest baby giraffe can be seen in a series of eight billboards throughout the Buffalo metropolitan area, through February 1, 2015. These billboards are helping to usher in a new year of

Expert advice on enticing kids to eat their fruits and vegetables (NAPSI)—As many parents know, kids can be picky eaters. And according to a recent study, moms are concerned that their kids aren’t eating enough fruits and vegetables. “We found that moms understand the health benefits of fruits and vegetables but struggle to get their family to eat them,” said Elizabeth Pivonka, Ph.D., RD, president and CEO, Produce for Better Health Foundation. “Today, Americans are currently eating less than half of the recommended cups of fruits and vegetables each day.” To better understand the situation, the Produce for Better Health Foundation conducted its annual research on “Moms’ Attitudes and Beliefs Related to Fruit & Vegetable Consumption.” The study found: • Ninety percent agree that a diet that includes fruits and vegetables may help their child avoid obesity. • Ninety percent agree that a diet with more fruits and vegetables promotes their family’s overall health and may prevent disease, now and in the future. • Ninety percent agree that a diet that includes fruits and vegetables may help promote well-being of mind and body. • Eighty-nine percent agree that more fruits and vegetables plus more physical activity means the family can be at its best. There’s been a steady improvement over time in the level of ease moms reported regarding their ability to access fruits and veg-

etables for their families at restaurants and quick-service restaurants. Setting out a fruit bowl, having vegetables cut up and ready to eat in the refrigerator, and finding ways to hide produce in other foods are some of the ways to get more fruits and vegetables into a family’s diet. The research also found that kids tend to eat more produce when they are involved in the growing, selecting and preparing of food. To get kids more involved, Pivonka provided these tips: 1. Let kids get involved in planning meals for the week and challenge them to find ways to make sure a fruit and vegetable are included in each meal. Remember, canned, frozen and dried fruits or vegetables, in addition to fresh, are all great options! 2. Get kids involved in using produce to make juices or smoothies. It can be a fun activity for kids to use a blender or juicer to show them there are other ways to eat your fruits and vegetables. 3. Teach kids about produce that’s in season and how to select the best produce. Take them to a farmer’s market to talk with growers. This also provides a great opportunity to try new produce they didn’t know they enjoyed. 4. Starting a backyard garden can be a great way to get kids interested and involved. Monsanto, through its Seminis Home Garden division, is working to make growing backyard produce more accessible for busy families by creating seed varieties that are easy to grow.

our upcoming Valentine’s Day items along with special coffee cake items.” South Buffalo CREW [concerned residents engaged in work] is sponsoring the cash mob, the fourth of its kind, in their continued efforts to maintain and improve the South Buffalo area. While you will soon see the CREW members taking to the streets for their clean up events, the pre-spring cash mob is just another way that South Buffalo CREW continues to stir our economy and call attention to the great small businesses in our neighborhood. Now going into her fifth year at the Abbott and Dundee location, Cunningham is thrilled with the community

response to her Neapolitan hued bake shop. Known for her sensibly priced baked goods available at the shop on Sundays 11-4 and through phone orders, Cunningham is also considering a Saturday opening once a month, thanks to positive community response to her specialty shop. New items at KupKates include Irish soda bread, rice krispy treats drizzled in chocolate, and a variety of cupcakes that include a carrot cupcake with cream cheese frosting, an Oreo cheesecake cupcake, and a red velvet cupcake. A wide assortment of pies adds to the appetizing ensemble and there are new items in the shop each week. Cunningham’s creativity

with the mixing bowl seems limitless as she adds an ongoing number of items to her pink and white bakery shelves. KupKates is becoming known as the go-to place in the South Buffalo area for catered bakery occasions. Weddings, baby showers, bridal showers and bachelorette events have sought out the assistance of KupKates for their unique bakery designs and their ability to bring a next level of sweetness to all of your special event ideas. Phone orders are also always welcome for cupcakes, pies, cookies and other baked goods. Orders can be placed by calling Kathy Cunningham at 828-2282.
