Cleve-Hill High School named 2015 Tech Wars Champs By Rebecca Gunning LOCKPORT STAR EDITOR
On Wednesday, Jan. 14, Niagara County Community College hosted its 18th annual Tech Wars Competition. Nearly 30 school districts from all over Western New York visited the campus to compete in 21 different engineering and technology events, with Cleveland Hill High School being crowned the 2015 Tech War Champions. The event was open to students in grades 6 through 12, with middle school and high school
divisions in many of the competitions. Eighteen years ago when Tech Wars first began, there was one event with students from three schools. This year’s competition had around 700 students registered. There is a wide array of events, ranging from the amount of weight a wooden bridge can hold to robots building towers to windmill construction. One of the most anticipated ones is the Sumo Bot competition, which high school students build 20-pound robots to face off against each other.
Save Time!
“These things are built from scratch by the students,” explained Mark Voisinet, an instructor at NCCC who has been involved with Tech Wars since 2000. “They’re starting with raw materials and doing everything from mechanical construction of it to all of the mounting of electronic components to all the programing and wiring that needs to be done in order to run the robots.” Another event that saw many participants was the Cardboard Boat Regatta. In this competition, students must construct a boat

The oars also can only be created with cardboard and duct tape. “That’s one of the competitions where you see a wide array of very well done and thought-out projects as compared to the occasional refrigerator box with some duct tape holding it together,” said Voisinet with a laugh. One of the teams that
participated in the regatta was a team of four girls from Sweet Home High School, who wore squid hats and made a boat that looked like a whale. The girls’ team is made up of senior Allie Perfetto, freshman Alyssa Duffy, junior Madeline Bell, and her sister Alison, a freshman, and wound up finishing in third place. Voisinet found the allgirl team to be encouraging and follows the trend of more girls developing an interest in S.T.E.M.

Preserve offering a chance at winter exploration event. “Many people make New Year’s resolutions to live healthier and get out more,” said Center Director Meaghan Boice-Green. “This event is a great opportunity to explore new forms of outdoor recreation in a beautiful setting.” There’s going to be something for everyone, no matter what your age or interest. For the youngest visitors, the center will have a snow art area set up where kids can explore their creative side with the help of a unique winter medium, while others can show off their snowball throwing skills. There will also be a demonstration of something that the area’s perfect for, but not many people take

One of the hardest things to get motivated to do during the long winter months is to put on the warm, heavy clothes and get outside. There’s a lot of us that only do it when we have to do something unpleasant like shovel the driveway, but the education center at Reinstein Woods is making sure that everyone has a chance to come and see that winter doesn’t have to be a chore – at least, all the time. From 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 7, they’ll be hosting their annual Winter Wonderland in the Woods event. There are no reservations required for the
the opportunity to explore. Center staff will be giving visitors the chance to try their hand at ice fishing, while in other areas there will be demos of snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Rentals will also be available for those that want to try the sport for a bit longer. “My favorite part of the event is seeing people try snowshoes or cross-country skis for the first time,” Boice- Green said. “A lot of people never realized how easy it is to snowshoe or ski, and how much fun it can be to get out in nature in the winter!” Longtime volunteer Mary Hughes, better known to the regular center visitors as Nature Mary, will also be hosting an in-

Meals on Wheels looking for volunteers By Debra Kelly
COURIER CORRESPONDENT
Meals on Wheels is in need of more volunteers to deliver hot meals to the residents of Cheektowaga. Volunteers typically work in pairs, with one person driving and one person serving the meals, and a single run only takes about an hour of your time. “The routes are designed so the volunteers stay in a reasonably close area, and they aren’t driving all over the place,” said Senior Center Director Kerry Switalski. “Meal recipients get a hot meal for their lunch and they also get a cold meal for their dinner that same day.” There are three different locations in Cheektowaga that Meals on Wheels volunteers operate out
of: the Senior Center, the Maryvale Presbyterian Church, and the Lord of Life Church. All sites are in constant need of more help. The lunches and dinner come to the site prepared and ready to go, so all that’s needed are the friendly faces that get the meals to their recipients. For volunteers, it only means an hour out of their day, but for many recipients, it’s something that they look forward to all day. “We see our volunteers forming lasting relationships with the residents they deliver to,” Switalski said. “For many of the seniors on our routes, the Meals on Wheels volunteer is the only personal contact they have on a daily basis and the per-
sonal interaction is just as important as the nutritious meals they are getting.” The meals that are delivered five days a week are designed to fulfill twothirds of the nutritional requirements of a single adult. Special dietary considerations that each individual might have – such as a need for a low-salt diet – are also provided for. A donation of $3.50 per meal ($7 per day) is suggested to help fund the programs and continue providing meals to seniors who can no longer shop for themselves, but no one is turned away if they can’t make a donation. That’s why the volunteers of the program are so important. Those interested in lending a helping hand don’t have to volunteer for delivery runs five
days a week, and can sign up for whatever is convenient for them. The schedule is a regular one – the meals that are distributed from the senior center arrive at 11:20 a.m., and most volunteers are finished with their route within the hour. Those interested in picking up a Meals on Wheels route should call the volunteer representative at the location they’re interested in working from. For the Senior Center, call Jim at 601-0646, for Lord Of Life call Nancy at 6567186, and for the Maryvale Presbyterian Church call Joanne at 892-1711. For those who are interested in having a Meals on Wheels delivery made to them or know someone in need, call 822-2002. Published by CPOWNY

Common sense precautions can make for a healthier flu season New York State is experiencing geographically widespread influenza activity with Niagara County reporting confirmed cases of influenza. Obviously, this is a time when we should be taking all actions and precautions to prevent getting this infection. There is some anxiety about the “drifted” strain of influenza causing a decrease in efficacy of the current flu vaccine. However, we would like to negate this general notion and emphasize that everybody should get the vaccine. Although this year’s vaccine is not ideal match for
one strain of influenza, the antibodies made in response to it can provide some protection against different but related viruses. The current vaccine will provide valuable protection against several other common influenza strains that are present in the vaccine. We also urge you to: •Wash your hands frequently, especially when outside of the home •Avoid touching your face (mouth, nose, eyes) with unclean hands •Frequently disinfect hightouch surface areas such as door knobs, stair railings,
sink handles, counter tops, etc. If you do become sick, going to the emergency room isn’t necessary if you are mildly ill. Instead, you should: •Stay home and limit contact with others at least until 24 hours after fever is gone •If you must leave home, wear a facemask to prevent infecting others •Cover your cough with tissues or the crook of your arm and then perform hand hygiene You should, however, go the emergency room if you exhibit emergency signs of
influenza. In children, these signs can include rapid breathing or trouble breathing, bluish skin color, dehydration, lethargy, extreme irritability and fever with a rash that may seem to improve but return with fever and cough. Infants may also be unable to eat, shed no tears when crying and have significantly fewer wet diapers than normal. In adults, emergency signs of influenza include difficulty breathing, pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen, sudden dizziness, confusion, severe or persistent vomiting,
and flu-like symptoms that improve but then return with fever and worse cough. People most vulnerable for developing flu-related complications include •Children younger than 5, especially those younger than 2 years old •Adults 65 years of age and older •Pregnant women •American Indians and Alaskan natives •People with medical conditions such as asthma, neurological conditions, chronic lung disease, heart disease, blood disorders, diabetes, kidney disorders, liver dis-
orders, metabolic disorders, HIV and cancer, people younger than 19 who receive long-term aspirin therapy, and people who are morbidly obese. Peak flu season has about six weeks left to go. If we work together to limit its impact, we’ll all enjoy a healthier winter. Rajinder Bajwa, M.D. and W. Hank Cullers, R.N., B.S., B.S.N., C.I.C. Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center

Town supervisor giving State of the Town Address By Debra Kelly
COURIER CORRESPONDENT
Now that the holidays are officially behind us and the new year is several weeks in, it’s time to start looking forward at what’s going to be happening in the town for the coming months. At noon on Thursday, Jan. 22, Cheektowaga Town Supervisor Mary Holtz will be giving the annual State of the Town Address at the Cheektowaga Chamber of Commerce Luncheon. The luncheon is being held at the Millennium Hotel Buffalo, located at 2040 Walden Ave. “The luncheon is a tradition for us,” said Debra Liegl, President and CEO of the Cheektowaga Chamber of Commerce. “We have been honored to host the State of Town Address at our January Lun-
cheon for more than 20 years. We feel it is important that we provide a forum for our members and the community to hear the accomplishments in the town during the past year and the goals for 2015.” In last year’s address, Holtz had focused on priorities like luring new businesses into Cheektowaga, increasing the town’s economic growth and development. Bringing more businesses to the area means, of course, bringing in more jobs – and that’s something that never goes unneeded. She also looked at plans to streamline government and cut costs, which included plans to consolidate the Community Development Department and the Neighborhood Preservation and Housing Development. Luring new businesses to the area is increasingly important, but

The communities of the 143rd Assembly District looked to Wozniak to help heal a wound left by an elected official who abused the trust of his constituents. “I want to provide the good people of Western New York with the honest representation they deserve,” said Wozniak. “It is important for me to support anti-corruption legislation so that I can not only help our government, but also heal a wound left in my community. I don’t want to stop at the Public Officer’s Accountability Act – I plan to introduce my own legislation with even harsher penalties for elected officials who abuse their power. I am proud
that my first sponsored legislation as an elected official is a measure that will put New York State’s government on the right track.” The Public Officer’s Accountability Act would institute an eight-year term limit for committee leaders and chairs, create harsher penalties for those who act against public interest while in office, limit the use of campaign funds to only campaign activities, require that campaign funds of a convicted official be returned to donors and charities, ban officials convicted of felonies from future employment and lobbying activity, institute member-item reforms, and lastly, replace the Joint Commission on Public Ethics (JCOPE) with a new commission comprised of individuals appointed by State Court of Appeals jurists.

Local sports Bielanin blossoming as one of Eagles’ big guns in pool
By Mike Pidanick SPORTS REPORTER
Bryce Bielanin has high hopes in his fifth and final season for the Cleveland Hill High School boys swimming team. Those goals are highlighted by a trip to the state tournament and a strong performance there, as well as additional school records. His history shows, watch out for plenty of success. A clutch performer through the years for the Eagles, Bielanin is one of Cleveland Hill’s big guns as crunch time nears. “He thrives in the postseason, he’ll be fine,” Eagles coach
Dough Newman said. The records show, Bielanin is the top 100 backstroke swimmer in Cleveland Hill history. He set a new school mark last February at the Section VI Championships at Clarence High School, finishing in 56.81 seconds. “He’s looking to build on his success from last year when he set a school record at sectionals and he’s already doing that,” Newman said. Bielanin will graduate - not only with the best time in the 100 back in school history, but also with the top time for a senior, junior, sophomore and freshman. Previously, he had set the Cleveland Hill records for a sophomore (57.47 seconds) and freshman (59.52 seconds) and eighth-grade (1 minute, 1.31 seconds). And he entered his senior season looking to add his name even more to the program,
DAVE ECKHARDT
Bryce Bielanin is the top 100 backstroke swimmer in Cleve Hill history. which includes an extensive school record book, which is handed out at each home meet. “I want to break another school record, either in the 200
IM or 100 butterfly,” he said after an early-season win over Tonawanda. “And I just want to do whatever I can to help my team win.”
Bielanin’s top goals include team success and as he said, “we’ve started out well and we’re getting better every day.” He’s part of a strong
senior class that also includes fellow captains Kyle Godziak and Adam Slavinski as well as Ryan Eades, Ryan Osswald, Brandon Seifert, Ben Sullivan and Josue Vazquez. “All of our seniors are doing an excellent job,” Newman said. “They’re all pulling their weight and trying to get the younger guys behind them and following their lead.” Team goals are always imperative for the Eagles, who are also major players come postseason time at an individual level as well. When the best swimmers in New York State get together in Albany, Bielanin expects to make an impact there as well in the event he has set a new standard for at Cleveland Hill. “I want to go to states in the 100 back and do well there,” he said. “I’m just going to keep working hard and doing what I have to do.”
College football title and UB are pipedream — for now By Mike Haim COLUMNIST
I’m not sure if it was a moment of sheer hopefulness or just delusional thinking from a battle with a flu bug this past weekend, but there was a short period of time last Monday night when I actually pondered what it would be like if the University at Buffalo actually made the College Football Championship game. The thought didn’t last long, mind you. The reality is that smaller conferences, like the Mid-American in which UB competes, aren’t even in the mix when it comes to big-time bowl games, much less this newfangled (but long overdue)
invention to have one game decide the nominal national champion (remember, the title is not officially sanctioned by the NCAA). Even if UB’s “New York Initiative” eventually results in the football program becoming big enough to move up to a bigger conference, the question remains whether UB could migrate to one of the “Power Five” leagues that have a markedly better chance at getting their teams into the semi-final bowl games which feed into the title game. NCAA football isn’t like basketball, where a team can ride a hot streak during March Madness and seemingly magically make the Final Four. There is no football equivalent to
giant-beating hoops underdogs like Virginia Commonwealth, Wichita State, or Florida Gulf Coast. That said, it’s awfully hard to imagine the Bulls ever moving into one of the power conferences: theAtlantic Coast (ACC), Big Ten, Big 12, Pacific-12, and Southeastern (SEC). The one remote possibility might lie with the ACC, which in recent years has added Pitt, Syracuse, Louisville, and Notre Dame to its ranks. The current geography of the conference wouldn’t necessarily eliminate Buffalo, but I would anticipate it taking many years for UB to assemble the necessary infrastructure, fanbase and financial support to make the move feasible.
Even if the Bulls were to garner those prerequisites, there’s also a more basic aspect to worry about: establishing some sort of competitiveness against long-established programs. You can be optimistic by the glimpses seen in recent seasons: playing closely for portions of road games against Pitt, Georgia, and Ohio State, for example. But those are nothing but glimpses; being close for a half against a ranked opponent is simply not good enough if your eventual goal is something bigger than the Idaho Famous Potato Bowl. Don’t get me wrong – UB has done a fantastic job of making progress with their football program over the past 20 years. Athletic director Danny
White has to be given credit for keeping his eyes squarely on raising the school’s profile after his predecessors – Nelson Townsend, Bob Arkeilpane, and Warde Manuel – helped propel UB from its previous Division III status. But the proverbial mountain gets steeper the higher one climbs, and there isn’t exactly a long line of universities looking to demote themselves. UB’s growth will eventually depend on conferences becoming larger and covering more geographic ground. Along UB’s difficult “road to the national championship” is its ability to foster an unspoken tradition which keeps alumni coming back for years and decades. While the football
program has a devoted, loyal group of older graduates, there isn’t the rabid following as seen during Monday’s Oregon-Ohio State game, where middle-aged men had their faces, heads, and bodies painted in ways not even seen at NFL games. It doesn’t seem possible for the Bulls to magically acquire a group like that overnight. Then again, it seemed impossible 20 years ago for the terms “UB” and “bowl game” to be used in the same sentence. So maybe it wasn’t the flu that made me think of those national championship possibilities, but rather a willingness to be patient. www.twitter.com/mikehaim

Local sports Camel highlights quality depth for Cheektowaga boys hoops
By Mike Pidanick SPORTS REPORTER
A n y o n e t h a t ’s e v e n remotely familiar with Western New York high school basketball knows all about Dominick Welch and Zak Ciezki – and those are the two standouts that are expected to lead Cheektowaga Central to big things again this season. But the Warriors’ goals are sky-high in 2015, and to achieve that, they’ll need vast contributions from the supporting cast as well. That’s where the likes of Devon Camel come in handy. A 5-foot-10 senior guard, Camel has stepped up when needed for Cheektowaga and he’s shown he’s more than willing to take the big shot if that’s what his team needs. “Dev’s been with us for a couple years now and he’s more than capable,” Cheektowaga coach Patrick Cullinan said. “He’s always willing to take a back seat and set up those other guys to do their thing. When other teams try to take other guys out, he has shown to be more than capable of stepping up and making plays for us.” Welch and Ciezki were both all-state selections last season and they’re the primary reason Cheektowaga is one of the best in Section VI this year as well. But Cheektowaga’s goals this season involve a trip to Glens Falls and for that
strong supporting cast. He’s averaging about 10 points per game and if he’s left open, he’s proven to be very capable of burying a 3-pointer against a team too focused on Welch and Ciezki. Camel is part of a strong group of role players along with the likes of Patrick Plummer, Drequon Trotter and Stephan Parker. Defenses are certain to focus on Cheektowaga’s top two standouts - but the Warriors hope that’s when the team’s depth will come out and shine. “We’re a lot more than those two guys,” Cullinan said. “Obviously, Zak has had a heckuva career here, not just hoops but obviously football as well. And then we have Dom and everyone knows what he can do. We’re not going to sneak up on anybody with those guys. We’re going to see some junk defenses, we know that. And different guys need to step up and play.” The Warriors suffered some early setbacks this season with non-league losses to strong McKinley and Williamsville South teams – and of course the heartbreaking buzzer-beater loss to TC Brown and Amherst on Dec. 16. But the Warriors are heading into the heart of the schedule seemingly back on track. Preseason was limited by the football team’s historic playoff run and the November snowstorm – but Cheektowaga seems to be JEFFREY T. BARNES good to go going forward. Devon Camel is averaging roughly 10 points per game for the Cheektowaga boys basketball team. “We got back to playing our type of basketball, team basketball,” Camel said. “Our first couple of games, to happen, it’s going to take riors have these days. Camel said after scoring 15 “Anyone can step up.” we were kind of scattered. a roster full of talent - and “I’ve been saying all year, points in a win over rival Camel has done is part as We got a good break and got that’s exactly what the War- we have a lot of talent,” Maryvale in early January. a member of Cheektowaga’s our stuff together.”

ECC celebrates continued success through program Back in spring 2012, Erie County’s community college students couldn’t take advantage of a New York grant program that allows volunteer firefighters to receive tuition reimbursement in exchange for first responder service. Fast forward to the days leading into 2015, when Erie Community College officials can now boast the state’s highest enrollment numbers under the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York Higher Education Learning Plan. And thanks to this increased attendance—with nearly 150 students registered as of the Fall 2014 semester—ECC can also report over $500,000 in additional student tuition due to opportunities afforded under the FASNY plan. “I am pleased to learn that a notable number of students are taking advantage of the FASNY tuition program and committing themselves to serve their volunteer fire company,” said Erie County Legislator Edward Rath, a leading proponent of the program and its benefits to county residents. “This program
is a great benefit for the community, fire departments, ECC and students. I hope that we continue to see an increase in participation and applaud those who have enrolled in the program, earning a quality education while serving those in need.” The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) developed the plan as an incentive for people to serve in volunteer fire service. New York’s volunteer fire departments are currently experiencing a critical need to recruit and retain members. As an incentive for people to serve, FASNY developed the Higher Education Learning Plan (FASNY HELP). This program provides tuition reimbursement to individuals attending community college for up to eighty (80) credit hours and, according to ECC President Jack Quinn, provides area residents yet another way to take advantage of the threecampus college’s careerfocused education. “We at ECC are very proud of the successes we’ve experienced through the FASNY program,”

said Quinn. “We’re here for the community, so we’re thrilled to offer area residents yet another way to pursue affordable educational opportunities.” According to ECC FASNY Tuition Representative Tom Chmielowiec, the college has taken in approximately $534,603.41—from a combination of FASNY assistance, TAP and PEL grant monies, and student payment—since the program’s inception in fall 2012. He also reports that 204 students are currently on ECC’s roster to apply for FASNY assistance, and the college plans to welcome more applications as the successes of the program spread across the region. “ECC is very proud and honored to be part of the FASNY Program
and to be able to serve our firefighters with the education needs they have,” said Chmielowiec, who reports that students are currently enrolled in 18 of ECC’s FASNYapproved programs like Criminal Justice and Nursing. Under FASNY HELP, student-volunteers are eligible to have up to 100% of their tuition reimbursed in exchange for maintaining their grades and fulfilling defined service requirements. They must also be a “member in good standing” in one of New York’s volunteer fire companies during both their school years and service payback period. And, if they’re in good standing, they’ll be good firefighters on the job, something Steve DiPasquale—a 39-year
member of the North Amherst Volunteer Fire Department—notes as essential to Erie County. “It’s with great pride to know that the volunteer firemen of Erie County have embraced the program, utilized it as it was meant to be and, in the end, ECC has benefitted greatly,” said DiPasquale. “This program has been a win for all of Erie County and I would like to thank everyone that was involved from the beginning and congratulate all on a job well done.” It’s not too late for new students/recruits to take advantage of the HELP grant for the spring semester. As outlined by FASNY, students who meet the requirements, including a 4.0 GPA, are eligible for full reimbursement. Students
recording a 3.0-3.99 GPA receive 85 percent reimbursement and a GPA between 2.0-2.99 earns them 75 percent reimbursement. The grant program also requires that students/volunteers meet the necessary service demands of their fire department. Interested residents can learn more about the program by contacting their local fire department. For information on the program or to simply apply, go online to www.fasny. com/index.php/resources/ fasny-help; contact ECC’s Tom Chmielowiec at chmielowiect@ecc.edu; or send e-mail to HELP@ fasny.com to the attention of John D’Alessandro, deputy volunteer programs coordinator, or call (855) 367-6933

Wegmans’ $50,000 donation to Food Bank of WNY is a gift for affected agencies In the aftermath of the surprise November storm that crippled many communities, the Food Bank of Western New York will use a $50,000 donation from Wegmans, and funds from other donors designated toward disaster relief efforts, to procure and distribute food in areas hardest hit by the storm. More than 30 member agencies were heavily impacted by the recent storm, including those in the areas of Cheektowaga, Lackawanna, Orchard Park, Silver Creek, Springville, South Buffalo and West Seneca. These funds will be used to replenish the shelves at the Food Bank and designated member agencies. Each agency will receive monies ranging from $1,600 for small agencies to $3,400 for large agencies to acquire food from the Food Bank and distribute it to local families in our community. Collectively, these member agencies distribute an average of 179,480 meals to 24,000 people each month. “Knowing the damage that the storm caused, we reached out to the Food Bank of Western New York and learned they could use our
help,” said Michele Mehaffy, Consumer Affairs Manager at Wegmans Food Markets. “We are grateful for the opportunity to help restock local pantries devastated by the storm. As a longtime supporter of the Food Bank of WNY, we will continue to help in its mission, providing hunger relief in Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie and Niagara counties.” During the height of the storm the Food Bank of WNY was called upon by New York State to deliver food to an agency in Lackawanna where members of the National Guard delivered packages of food to families in need. In an effort to assist the Food Bank in replenishing its supply of food, Governor Andrew Cuomo encouraged companies and residents to donate. HSBC Bank responded with a donation of $25,000 for disaster relief food and WKBW-TV 7 and the Scripps Howard Foundation donated $5,000 and created a 7 Cares for the Community campaign encouraging viewers to donate on line to the Food Bank or at any First Niagara Bank. First Niagara donated $2,500 and customers
added more than $1,000 in donations. Citizens Bank also donated $3,000. “We are grateful to all who donated to the disaster relief efforts and we are extremely grateful to Wegmans. They care, and it genuinely shows in their year-round commitment to our community,” said Marylou Borowiak, President and CEO of the Food Bank of WNY. “These monies will have a significant impact in assisting our local families in need.” Darlene Sery of the Catholic Charities Food Pantries said, “We are grateful for the assistance we received from the Food Bank during the November storm. Their staff worked around the clock to get food to our agencies so we could distribute to our clients in need. Because of the hard work and the dedication of the Food Bank staff, we were able to provide our clients with food in a timely manner. “ “What a blessing these disaster relief funds will be to our clients,” said Brent Doyle of the Southtowns Christian Center’s Feed My Sheep food pantry.

HOME IMPROVEMENT Transitowne Jeep Chrysler Dodge Ram helps to raise money Transitowne Jeep Chrysler Dodge Ram helped raise $3,770 in funding for Harris Hill Elementary with Chrysler brand’s Drive for the Kids® program. The check presentation was held January 7 at the Harris Hill Elementary PTO meeting and attended by members of the school board, Harris Hill PTO, and representatives from Transitowne. The actual fundraising event was held on October 9, in conjunction with the school’s Open House. Harris Hill Elementary earned a $10 contribution to the school on their behalf from the Chrysler brand by taking a brief test drive in a 2014 model Town & Country minivan—highest ranked in loyalty 12 years in a row—as well as other Chrysler vehicles made available for test drives thanks to Transitowne Jeep Chrysler Dodge Ram. “Drive for the Kids is a mutually beneficial program. We are pleased to support our local schools, and enjoy demonstrating a terrific, world class product,” said Tom Shanley, Manager of the Northeast Business Center for Chrysler Group LLC.

Villa Maria announces new learning differences program By Debra Kelly
COURIER CORRESPONDENT
Making the transition from high school to college can be an overwhelming thing, and making the jump from college into the real world can be even more frightening – and that can be even more intimidating for students who have been diagnosed with learning differences. That’s a huge part of the reason that Villa Maria has put together the Achieve Program. Many student assistance programs help with the day-to-day subjects, but Villa Maria’s program goes above and beyond that. In addition to tutors, printed class materials and tips on efficient note-taking, the Achieve Program
will be providing some other help that will translate well into real-world situations. That includes teaching time management skills, self-advocacy skills, and communication skills. A large part of the program will include helping students not only recognize when they need help, but allowing them the chance to trust in themselves enough to speak up. Approaching a professor or tutor can be an intimidating thing, and they’re going to be showing students just how much farther ahead they can get when they ask for the help that they need. “Every student is different, and every student has individual needs,” said Melissa Zgliczynski, Director of the Achieve Program. “One of our goals is
to set our students up for success in internships and success after college as well as during college.” Students who enroll in the Achieve Program will also meet regularly with program staff for individual coaching sessions, goalsetting sessions, and social group and social skill development sessions. They will also have opportunities for specialized career development support, internship programs, priority registration for classes, and access to a variety of adaptive equipment. The program is designed to help students not only ask for help when they need it, but to discover – and utilize – their strengths. It’s all with the ultimate goal of not just getting students through college, but making sure

they make the most of their time in their classes and start out as best they can in the real world. “Our professors here really want to see their students succeed,” Zgliczynski said. “They’ll reach out to students, and one of the goals of the program is to get those students to take advantage of all of the resources we have made
available to them in order to ensure their success.” Students who are accepted to Villa Maria can apply for acceptance into the Achieve Program, and begin using all their extensive resources in the fall semester of 2015. Currently, the Achieve Program is the most extensive and most comprehensive program of its kind in Western
New York, and the program will be continuing to grow as the staff and tutors get feedback from their students on what’s helping them the most and what they would like to see involved in the program. For more information on the program and on applying to Villa Maria, visit villa.edu.
