Conference held at Trociare College

The fall conference of the Western New York and Northwestern Pennsylvania (WNY/NWPA) Chapter of the Fulbright Association held its fall conference, “Crossing Borders, Expanding Knowledge” at Trocaire College.. “We were honored that the Fulbright Association asked us to host this event,” said Dr. Jennifer Higgins McCormick, Dean of Arts, Sciences and Professional Studies. “This is the first time that a Fulbright conference has been held at a career-focused college like Trocaire. We were excited to be able to offer the wonderful scholarship opportunities available through the Fulbright to our predominately non-

traditional and often first generation student population, as well as to our dedicated faculty and staff.” The conference was attended by students, faculty, visiting Fulbrighters and professionals interested in applying for a Fulbright scholarship to study abroad. The keynote speaker, Sampson Lee Blair, Ph.D., family sociologist in the Department of Sociology at the State University of New York at Buffalo, gave a brief history of the Fulbright Program. He noted that Founder J. W. Fulbright wanted to create an understanding among countries and the people – to become aware of each other’s cultures creates peace. Dr.

Blair spoke of his personal Fulbright experience in the Philippines. He said, “The experiences you gain will touch you in ways you cannot imagine.” He spoke of the sharing among cultures noting that as a Fulbrighter you are an ambassador. “Fulbrighters have an open mind, open eyes and an open heart,” stated Dr. Blair. Additional presentations were held on different Fulbright awards discussed by Chapter Board members and local Fulbrighters. Dr. Cheryl Drout (SUNY Fredonia) talked about the Fulbright Traditional Award, Dr. Andrea Wyman (Edinboro University) presented the Fulbright Specialist Award, Dr. Laila Denoyak,

an Independent Scholar, discussed the Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence, and Maria Seewaldt (University at Buffalo) discussed the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. As a first-year Trocaire student and vice-president of the Student Governance Association, Linda Tran was excited about all of the information she was able to gather at the Fulbright conference. She noted, “I made my decision to attend the Fulbright conference because I thought it would be interesting to find out information about how I can learn more about my career major (nursing) in different places around the world.”

Costume giveaway a hit at Seneca Babcock Center By Catherine Miller COURIER CORRESPONDENT

“Who doesn’t love Halloween?” asks Maryanne McMahon, organizer of the Costumes for a Cause collection drive at the Seneca Babcock Community Center, “It’s that one time of year you can be the superhero or monster that you want to be.” Maryanne Mychajliw McMahon grew up in the Seneca Babcock area and knows first-hand the many challenges that the residents face. Wanting to help make Halloween fun, she spearheaded the Costumes for a Cause collection drive a few years ago to add to the enjoyment for the neighborhood kids, and the idea has taken off. “We’ve tripled the number of costumes we collected this year,” stated Brian Pilarski, Executive Director of Seneca Babcock Community Center, who noted that just under 300 costumes were collected and disbursed last year, “There was more community involvement in the collecting of costumes, and because of that we will be able to provide costumes to many more children this year.” Children were able to come

Volunteers Ryan Garecki and Catie Hartman look on as Alana and Peyton Baker pick out their Halloween hats. to the center the week before Halloween so that they could pick out the perfect get-up for the upcoming holiday. Sisters Alana and Peyton Baker took their time picking out just the right hat to go with their costumes. “I like to say “trick-or-treat” on Halloween,” admitted

Peyton, 6, when asked for her favorite part of the Halloween happenings. “I like dressing up and going trick-or-treating,” stated older sister Alana. As the children filed in to make their costume selections from the hundreds of choices available this year, volunteers

assisted the young ones with their selections. Ryan Garecki and Catie Hartman, seniors at Hutch Tech High School, were drawn to assist at the center and help the children out of a sense of community spirit, and a fun way to fulfill their community service requirement at school. Dozens of volunteers were needed to hand out the costumes due to the increase in donations. The Seneca Babcock Community Center, 1168 Seneca St, functions as a multi-use community resource center offering lunches to seniors, dinners and activities for children, homework assistance, food pantry, and numerous community services. The dedicated volunteers and donations from local organizations and citizens help to continue the efforts of the center. With Halloween over the center will turn its attention to food and holiday donations for the upcoming winter months. The center aims to provide holiday donations for hundreds of needy children. If you are interested in making a donation or volunteering at the Seneca Babcock Community Center contact Brian Pilarski at 8225094 for information on how you can help.

Shrek brings orge-sized fun to Timon By Catherine Miller COURIER CORRESPONDENT

Shrek is bringing his own kind of green to Bishop Timon as he and his loyal steed Donkey take the stage for “Shrek the Musical” November 6-8. It’s likely to be one of the best Timon musicals of the decade. Senior Tim Keane will play the part of the loveable ogre, Shrek. Lauren Siminski, senior at Mount Mercy Academy, will take the stage as the lovely Princess Fiona and Mount Mercy junior Rebecca Pinterpe will portray Donkey as Timon senior Andrew Mikolajczyk will portray Lord Farquaad. As Shrek and his loyal steed Donkey attempt to rescue the fair Princess Fiona, Lord Farquaad will be joined by his far-fetched fairytale friends for a frolicking good time. The students of Bishop Timon-St. Jude and Mount Mercy Academy are joined

this year by a selection of grade school students from Notre Dame Academy and other area schools. The musical is produced and directed by Bob Maggio ’73 and the technical director is Jerry Kegler ’73. Maggio and Kegler have enhanced the show to keep the movement flowing throughout the production, and are adding some great special effects. And it doesn’t hurt that senior Tim Keane even sounds quite a bit like the Shrek we know and love. Bishop Timon-St Jude High School has been chosen as one of this year’s finalists for the prestigious Kenny Award. Now in its 22nd year the Kenny Award was created to honor the late Dr. Kenneth Lipke, who had a true dedication to the arts. One of only seven schools chosen for this year’s award, Bishop Timon was awarded the Kenny Award in 2002 for the first

time for its special effects in the production, the Wizard of Oz. In 2003 Timon was awarded a spotlight award for the lighting and special effects in the Music Man. Again in 2008 Bishop Timon-St. Jude was awarded a spotlight award for its creative interpretation for Godspell. Mary Kate Lonergan secured the outstanding supporting actress award for Timon in 2003, and in 2007 Timon was awarded the outstanding technical elements award in Annie Get Your Gun. Most recently Timon accepted the creative visual effects award for Willy Wonka in 2011. The Nov 6-8 performances of “Shrek the Musical” will begin each night at 7:30. Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for students and can be purchased on the night of the performance at the school, 601 McKinley Pkwy. Call Bishop Timon at 826-3610 for additional information.

Hillary Foundation honors community leaders By Catherine Miller COURIER CORRESPONDENT

It’s been a tradition in the South Buffalo community since 1957. Each year the Hillary Scholarship Foundation honors local community leaders that through have worked for the betterment of Bishop Timon High School and the community overall – and the committee selecting the annual honorees is never without a wonderful group to choose from. This year’s honorees include a teacher, a dentist, a priest, retired UPS and National Grid employees and a couple of great pizza shop owners. Although the list may sound like the beginning of a bad joke – their appearance was the beginning of a great evening of comradery and a fine example of what makes our neighborhood a great place to live. This year’s honorees include Erik Bohen ‘00, Steven Hietanen, DDS ‘80, Rev. Thomas Quinlivan ‘63, David “Ward” Scarcello ‘76, Patrick Stanton ‘69, David

Since then he continues to dedicate his time and talent to local schools. A teacher in the Buffalo Public School District, Bohen can be found at most local 5k events either running the race, or – well – running the race. As an organizer of the

Timon Fall Challenge 5k Race he actively assists in raising funds for scholarships for incoming Timon freshmen. Bohen continues his scholarship efforts with his work on the Ryan Purcell Memorial Race which raises funds to support various high school graduates in their college studies. Steven Hietanen, DDS, has more than enough to

fill his time. With a busy orthodontist practice, a wife and three sons playing hockey, Hietanen has found time to coach at Cazenovia Rink and serve on the board of hockey associations. But Hietanen continues to carve out time in his schedule for his alma mater and has served as chairman of the Timon Lawn Fete, Timon hockey coach, trustee member and currently he heads the Committee on Athletics at the school. Ask Hietanen why he would take time out of his hectic schedule to continue to give back to his high school alma mater, and the answer is simple. “Timon is a vital organ in the community,” states

Hietanen. Rev. Thomas Quinlivan admits that he has dual citizenship. He was born in the 14210 zip and later lived in the 14220 area. While he has served in parishes throughout the suburban community, it’s South Buffalo that he considers home. Presently serving as pastor at Queen of Heaven Church in West Seneca, Rev. Quinlivan, a ‘63 graduate of Bishop Timon, states that the fantastic journey he has been on is due, in great part, to the Franciscan values that he was taught at Bishop Timon. David “Ward” Scarcello is a longtime volunteer at Timon. As an alumnus with three sons that attended the school Scarcello has been a staple at most recent fundraisers and sporting events, always willing to lend a hand. In 2009 he initiated the “Mark F Scarcello Memorial Basketball Tournament” in honor of his late brother, which has since raised nearly $30,000 in scholarship funds for young men desiring to attend Bishop Timon. Patrick Stanton spoke sentimentally of his days at Bishop Timon as he accepted his Hillary Award – though he spoke more of his sports moments than his educational ones. A basketball legend in the halls of his alma mater Stanton has since continued to help Bishop Timon either

volunteering at functions or serving on committees, and Timon green continues to flow in his bloodstream. “Thank you for understanding my passion for all things Timon,” he announced to his wife Cathy during his awards speech. New to the Hillary Foundation Awards was the “Franciscan Community Spirit Award” bestowed on two men that have become leaders in our neighborhood. These men never wore a Timon uniform, but their commitment to the community overall is unprecedented by two imports from Amherst. Imperial Pizza owners Dave Powers and Jim Bouris were the recipients of the newest Hillary award, for their unfailing dedication to supporting our schools and community organizations. South Buffalo Alive joined in celebrating these local business icons. “We want to commend Dave Powers and Jim Bouris of Imperial Pizza for being great neighbors, beautifying their building with plants, and giving our teens a safe place to gather,” stated Marge Ryan, President of South Buffalo Alive, as she presented the owners with a plaque in addition to their Franciscan Community Spirit Award.

Helping students start their scholastic journey Erie Community College and the Lackawanna City Court’s Education 2 Recovery and Pathways Court Initiative offers free high school equivalency classes and other education-related services to those ready to pursue vocations via twoyear degree or certificate programs. And with open enrollment now available, the initiative is waiting for individuals eager to start down a new, focused career path. For over 12 years, ECC and local judicial districts have teamed up to provide individuals disabled by substance abuse and/or mental health problems with educational case management while they are participating in treatment. However, having realized that approxi-

mately 45 percent of these participants did not have a high school diploma, ECC has joined with Lackawanna City Court—just like it has with Buffalo and Niagara Falls city courts in the past— for an educational partnership that brings equivalency classes right to the court site. In line with ECC’s tag line of, “start here, go anywhere,” this partnership pathway encourages just that, and is the first of its kind in New York State. Classes are held inside Lackawanna City Court’s Hank Pirowski Education Center from 1 to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. For additional information, stop by the location at 714 Ridge Rd., or call Jennifer Dunn at 845-7218.

Combating financial needs in the classroom, one school at a time By Anna Cappello COURIER INTERN

Four-hundred and eighth five. According to a recent national survey, this is the average amount of money that teachers spend on school supplies and classroom materials out of their own pockets each year. But what if there was a program that allowed school teachers to shop for supplies without paying a single cent? The good news is such a program does exist and it’s called The Teachers Desk. This organization was founded by John Mika who, after working 30 years at GM and as a substitute teacher at Williamsville Public School, was driven to help the community. He specifically wanted to give students in need tools for education. “I just saw the incredible difference between what kids in the city schools don’t have and what kids in suburbs do have” Mika said.

The Teachers Desk, set up like an officesupply store, allows teachers to shop for classroom necessities like paper, pencils, glue and children’s books. Other organizational supplies such as binders and folders are available as well for no charge. A grand total of $200,000 in free school supplies is distributed on a weekly basis. Reaching out to 84,000 students annually throughout Western New York, this ministry is more than ready to combat any financial problems in the classroom. “We have about 150 schools all the way from Salamanca to Ripley and pretty much everywhere in between” Mika said. “And we are always looking for more schools.” Any school that has 70 percent or greater student participation in the National School Lunch Program, Mika stated, is eligible to shop at The Teachers Desk. Each teacher receives $900 on average in free supplies for

their classroom. Does your school meet the requirements and want to be registered? If the answer is yes, call 716-348-3412 or email shopping@ theteacherdesk.org to receive aid from Mika and his team of genuine volunteers who are ready to provide support for students in need. This nonprofit organization could not be possible without these volunteers, Mika explained, and there is always room for more help. A simple email to volunteer@ theteachersdesk.org can incorporate you into a program striving to make a difference in the Buffalo area. “It’s good for families, for high school kids in need of volunteer hours, and for retired adults as well” Mika stated. The Teacher’s Desk is located at 22 Northampton St. in Buffalo.

Mount Mercy fights until the end, falls to Nardin in semis By Matthew Ondesko MANAGING EDITOR

Heading into the Monsignor Martin Athletic Association soccer large school semifinals Oct. 25 at Nichols, Nardin Academy was the overwhelming favorite to advance to the title game. After all, the Gators finished as the regular-season champions of the MMAA. Playoff games, however, have a weird way of playing out. For 80 minutes, the underdog Mount Mercy Academy Magic gave Nardin everything it had, tying the score early in the second half. But, Nardin’s depth and experience was just too much

to handle as the Gators scored twice in the first overtime to defeat Mount Mercy, 3-1, to advance to the title game next Sunday (Nov. 3) at Niagara University. “Our girls aren’t scared of anything,” said Mount Mercy Academy coach John Glose. “They are just tough as heck, which I love. And we just came up a little bit short today.” With winds of up to 25 miles per hour blowing left to right at Nichols, both teams knew scoring chances would be few and far between. They also knew their best chance to score would be with the wind at their back. The Gators took advantage of the conditions 16 minutes in when they were awarded a corner kick. Sophomore Emma Gervase sent a great ball that found the scrum in front of the box before the Nardin player could tap it home. The Gators carried the play

kept us in games, the same thing today. I wish we could have done more her.” The Magic came out in the second half determined to make a game of it — and it did. Owning the midfield in

the half with the play of Emily Sheehan, Brittany Kempf and Emily Gawlak, Mount Mercy started to put pressure on the Nardin defense. Their attacking style finally paid off in the 46th minute when Sheehan took a nice through ball and went through three Nardin defenders before finally putting the ball past the keeper to the tie the score. It has been the type of goal, and leadership, Sheehan has showed all season long as the team was decimated with injuries. “Emily Sheehan my center mid, is one of the best players in Western New York,” stated Glose. “She proved it again today.” The Magic continued to press for the winning goal, but some of their chances went just wide of the post. After a hard 80 minutes, the two teams were destined for overtime. Nardin took ad-

vantage of the wind in the first overtime as the Gators scored twice off corner kicks to take a commanding lead. “Nardin has proven all year that they are good on set pieces and corners,” stated Glose. “That is why they are the No. 1 seed and one of the best teams in Western New York.” News and notes: • With the loss, the Magic finished the season 8-8 overall. Three of the eight losses came in double overtime. The Magic did defeat Nardin for the first time in six years earlier this year. It was just the second loss of the year for the Gators. The Magic also won three league games for the first time in a while. Mount Mercy will say goodbye nine seniors, but will return a pretty strong nucleus. The junior varsity team finished the year 4-8.

Zaffram, Canisius serve Timon just second loss of year

By Tom Gallagher SPORTS EDITOR

According to Canisius football coach Rich Robbins, Brad Zaffram is the best linebacker in New York State. “It’s not close. All you have to do is watch the film,” Robbins said. “If there’s a better linebacker around, let me know. Because he’s pretty special.” There wasn’t a better one at Tifft Field Friday night (Oct. 24). Zaffram, a highly courted

Division I recruit, had two interceptions, one of which he returned 85 yards for a score, and added a rushing touchdown to lead Canisius to a 37-8 win over Timon. In winning, the Crusaders improved to 2-0 in Monsignor Martin Association action and 8-0 overall. The Tigers, meanwhile, dropped to 3-1 in the league and 6-2 overall. Zaffram has been a focal point on defense for a Canisius team that has allowed just 63 points in eight games this season. In addition to his two interceptions, he finished with 16 tackles, bringing his team-leading total to 86 on the year. The senior also chipped in seven rushes for 37 yards and

a score to go with a 21-yard reception. “He’safantasticplayeronboth sides of the ball, but especially on defense and at linebacker,” Robbins said. “We’ve had [NFL player] Jimmy Gaines, we’ve had some good linebackers in this program, and [Zaffram] is by far the best one we’ve ever had.” Zaffram’s skill was on display more than ever when his thirdquarter pick-six deep in Canisius territory stymied a long Timon drive that could have pulled the Tigers to within one score had they reached paydirt. He jumped the route on a screen and took it to the house, giving the Crusaders a 30-8 lead. The Crusaders got on the board early after forcing aTimon

three-and-out to open the game. On their first offensive play, Mitch Thomas took a handoff to the left side and sped 47 yards into the end zone. Zaffram’s touchdown rush pushed Canisius’ lead to 14-0 and a 32-yard field goal from UConn-bound kicker Mike Tarbutt had the team up 17-0 as time expired in the first quarter. Timon needed some trickery to best the Canisius defense and getontheboard.Onfourth-and-3 from the Canisius 27 early in the second quarter, Tigers QB Brandon May lateraled to running back Gavin Caulfield, who found a wide-open Derrick Simpson in the end zone. A successful 2-point try cut Timon’s deficit to 17-8, but that was as

close as the Tigers would get. Timon utilized an effective screen game for much of the contest, but turnovers proved costly. May threw three interceptions — including the pick-six to Zaffram on what was the 11th play of a drive that had reached the Canisius 17 — and theTigers lost a fumble. “Ifyoumakemistakeslikethat against a great team, this is going to happen,” said Timon coach Charlie Comerford, whose team’s only losses have come at the hands of the nationally ranked Crusaders and Section V power Aquinas. “They are who everyone in Western New York knows they are,” Comerford said of Canisius. “They’re the best team

around and they’re the best team in the state.” Caulfield had five catches for 46 yards to go with his touchdown pass to Simpson. Tyler Ringwood had four catches for 44 yards. Desmond Stevens had six tackles and a sack. Both Ringwood and Simpson added interceptions defensively. DannyPricerecoveredafumble. The Tigers will host St. Joe’s (3-4, 1-2 MMAA) at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 31. “We’ve seen [St. Joe’s] a few times this year,” Comerford said. “It’s a Joe’s game. They’ve lost a couple times but they’re still a great team and [Dennis Gilbert] is a great coach. If our guys come out flat, they’re going to take it to us.”

Bengals lose to Utica, need win this week to regain first By Jonah Bronstein SPORTS REPORTER

The Buffalo State football team’s NCAA Tournament aspirations took a major hit Saturday (Oct. 25) with a home loss to Utica. Off to their best start since 1999 and sitting atop the Empire 8 standings for the first time, the Bengals turned the ball over three times in the 31-21 loss. Buffalo State (5-2, 3-2) now visits nationallyranked St. John Fisher needing a win to regain

first place in the Empire 8 standings. The conference champion automatically qualifies for the NCAA Tournament. Another loss would also likely take the Bengals out of consideration for an at-large berth. Mike Doherty (Kenmore East) led the Buffalo State offense with five catches for 165 yards and a 40-yard touchdown that gave the Bengals an early 7-0 lead. Utica went up 24-7 by halftime before John Alessandra (Kenmore East) recovered a fumble that led to a Rich Pete touchdown, bringing the

Buffalo State women’s hockey names captains Buffalo State second-year women’s hockey coach Candice Moxley has announced Kara Goodwin (Avon Lake, OH/Avon Lake) will serve as the team captain, and Jeyna Minnick (Rochester/GreeceArcadia) and Nikki Kirchberger (Buffalo/W. Seneca West) will serve as assistants for the 201415 season. Goodwin, a senior public communication major, will wear the “C” for the second-consecutive season. The forward enters her third and final season with the Bengals after transferring from Division I Lin-

denwood University. Goodwin has 33 career points including 22 goals in 51 games at Buffalo State, and had a breakout season a year ago. In 26 games last season, Goodwin netted 16 goals, including a school record 14 in ECAC West play. Minnick, a senior forward majoring in English, will serve as an assistant for the secondstraight year. She is the only player on this year’s roster in her fourth season with the team, and has tallied 16 goals and 13 assists for 29 points in 74 career games. Kirchberger will serve in

a leadership role for the first time. The junior criminal justice major has split time on forward and defense over her first two seasons, and has put up 17 goals and 13 assists for 30 points in 51 career games. Buffalo State made its first trip to the ECAC West playoffs in six years last season and has added 12 new faces to this year’s 20-player roster. The Bengals will open their 2014-15 campaign this weekend at the Plymouth State Tournament, playing the host Panthers on Friday and Nichols College on Saturday.

Bengals within 10 points. Quarterback Kyle Hoppy (Orchard Park) fumbled on Buffalo State’s next possession, however, and Utica would take advantage of the opportunity to push its lead up to 31-14. Dan Serignese relieved Hoppy at quarterback in the fourth quarter and connected with Doherty on a 50-yard gain before finding Ryan Carney (Olean) for an 8-yard touchdown pass that brought the Bengals within 31-21 with 7:16 remaining. But Buffalo State couldn’t get any closer, and in the process, gave

up pole position in the Empire 8 title race. St. John Fisher, coached by Lockport native Paul Vosburgh, is coming off a 61-0 win over Alfred State. James Chambers (Lockport) scored his third touchdown of the season in the win, and Sammy Hasan (Williamsville South) recovered a fumble in the end zone for a score. The Cardinals are ranked 15th in the latest D3football.com poll. Buffalo State is no longer receiving any votes after getting top 25 consideration the past two weeks.

Women’s soccer draws Oneonta

Megan Chapple (Utica,NY/ Whitesboro) scored for Buffalo State (7-7-3, 4-4-1 SUNYAC) in a 1-1 draw against Oneonta (6-8-3, 4-3-2) to close out regular season conference play on Saturday afternoon at Coyer Field. Buffalo State came out of the gate aggressive, controlling the majority of the first half. The Bengals made use of their first corner kick of the game as Chapple scored in just the third minute off a great pass from Meghan Allen (Big Flats, NY/Corning East) that was headed by Victoria Colotti (New Windsor, NY/Newburgh Free Academy) and found the foot of Chapple right in front of the net. In the second half, Oneonta

was awarded a penalty kick but goalkeeper Nicole Torres (Wantagh,NY/MacArthur) made a tremendous diving save to keep the Red Dragons off the board. In the 76th minute of play, Oneonta’s Taylor Messinna tied the game. The Bengals nearly scored six minutes into the first overtime when Breanna Kinight (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream South) took a corner kick that found Colotti, but Rachel Berk made an outstanding defensive save to keep things tied. In the final overtime, Buffalo State outshot the Red Dragons 4-0. The Bengals almost scored a last-minute goal to capture the win on a penalty

kick by Gina Taggart (Chester, NY/Monroe-Woodbury), but Oneonta’s goalkeeper came up with the save. Both teams finished with 11 total shots and six shots on goal, while the Bengals finished with a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks. Torres recorded five saves in the tie. Buffalo State closes out the 2014 regular season at home on Wednesday afternoon with a 3 p.m. game against St. John Fisher. Results weren’t available at press time. The Bengals finish the SUNYAC regular season as the No. 6 seed and will play at No. 3 Fredonia in the quarterfinals on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 1 p.m.

And for the first time in its storied history, Christmas in the Country will offer complimentary return passes so patrons can enjoy the sights, sounds and scents of this one-of-a-kind shopping experience all weekend long. “We have always felt our patrons needed more than just one day to properly enjoy this event,” said Daniel Kaczynski of Premier Promotions, organizers of the event. “Now everyone has the opportunity to come back as much as they would like at no additional cost.” This year, Christmas in the Country will welcome more than 400 artisans spread out over five buildings. Attendees will find unique handcrafted creations made in the USA, including home decor, gourmet foods and wine, original music, trendsetting jewelry, hand-poured aromatic candles, children’s toys and clothing, stylish pottery, original wall art, gifts for pets and holiday gift items galore. “This is an opportunity to make gift buying and shopping very meaningful,” said Sally Kaczynski, founder of Premier Promotions. “The selection of products at this market is comprehensive; there is truly something for everyone.” Christmas in the Country will welcome many new artisans this year, as well as favorites from CPOWNY

year’s past. “We find new artisans and a lot of time, they find us because this is an excellent opportunity for them,” Kaczynski said. “We want to continue to make the event fresh and new, but still keep the favorite artisans and traditions here.” Throughout the 30-year history of Christmas in the Country, giving back to the community has always been an integral part of the event. This year, participating non-profit groups will include Kathleen Mary House, Churches in Action, Hamburg Eden Animal Rescue Team (H.E.A.R.T.), Variety — The Children’s Charity of Buffalo and the Hamburg Presbyterian Church. “Helping those in need has always been who we are, both as a company and people of this community,” Kaczynski said. “Many of the artisans also donate products for auctions and raffles.” In 2013, Christmas in the Country was recognized as the No. 2 contemporary and classic artisan market in the nation by Sunshine Artist, the leading publication in the art and craft event industry. The event has ranked either No. 1 or No. 2 in the nation for the past 11 years. Celebrating its 30th anniversary and drawing almost 60,000 visitors over four days and featuring only handmade products made in the United States, the event is widely recognized today as the preeminent holiday artisan market in North America. The economic impact of this event is formidable. Restaurants

and hotels benefit significantly from patrons and artisans traveling to the event, while local artisans typically mark Christmas in the Country as their highest grossing event of the year. “The artisans really represent the very best of our country’s small businesses — hardworking, ingenious and determined. To see Western New York support them to this extent is very gratifying,” Kaczynski added. Christmas in the Country will run from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Nov. 6 and 7, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 8 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 9 at the Fairgrounds in Hamburg. Discount tickets are available through Wednesday, Nov. 5 at select locations through Erie County. For a complete list of locations visit www.wnypremierpromotions. com. For more than 30 years, Premier Promotions has produced high quality, extremely successful artisan events including Springtime in the Country, Christmas in the Country, Christmas in the Country-Erie and Yuletide in the Country. The events are consistently ranked among the Top 100 artisan shows in America by Sunshine Artist magazine. Last year, more than 90,000 visitors attended these events purchasing more than $4.5 million in high quality, handcrafted goods from juried artists and artisans. These events have also helped raise more than $1.4 million for Western New York charities.

Roswell Park now offering screening mammograms for general public Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) announces the expansion of its breast imaging services to the general public, offering routine screening mammography to non-patients in an effort to improve breast cancer screening rates and increase detection of breast cancer at the earliest, most curable stages. Current statistics show that as many as half the women who should be receiving an annual mammogram are not getting this important cancer screening. “We are pleased to be able to offer our technology and expertise for breast cancer detection to all women,â€? says Ermelinda Bonaccio, MD, director of breast imaging at RPCI. “Cancer detection, diagnosis and treatment are our specialty. Applying our capabilities to breast cancer screening is an important part of our mission.â€? Mammography is the only screening test that’s proven to reduce a woman’s risk of dying from the disease.
