In existence since 1922 the American Legion #721 has assisted countless thousands of veterans throughout the years. Sitting at the edge of Cazenovia Park the local Legion Post has often become a second home to veterans after their service to their country. Once with a membership of over 1500 members, there are presently over 200 members receiving services from the post.

Notable past members were Mayor Jimmy Griffin and Tim Russert’s father “Big Russ”. The American Legion Post #721, 136 Cazenovia Street, continues to assist veterans and their family with housing, healthcare and transitional services, and is a vital part of our community. With continued military engagements abroad there is an increased cost in helping veterans find the help they need

during and after their tours of service. Sponsorship of the American Legion, including the Friday, Nov 14 raffle, is one way to give back to those that have given so much of their lives for our country. If you are a veteran in need of their services contact them at 825-9557 or stop in to find out more about benefits and services available.

“Many landlords assume that they won’t be eligible for our programs,” stated Duderwick, “But that is not necessarily true. If you have a low income tenant you may still qualify for free or low cost weatherization for your rental property, depending on the tenant’s and the landlord’s incomes. Many times performing the weatherization for a responsible tenant will allow them to afford to stay in the home, relieving the landlord of having vacant rental properties.”

By Catherine Miller To celebrate National Weatherization Day, Neighborhood Housing Service [NHS] spent October 30 giving away free furnace filters and talking to residents about their furnaces, windows, air quality and other home and health related interior matters that tend to surface as the weather grows colder and we hunker into our homes for yet another frosty winter season. Shyrl Duderwick, Executive Director of NHS, and Rob Grigsby, Energy Auditor for the center, spoke about the importance of regularly changing your home’s furnace filter and the need for regular air quality testing, especially during the colder months. While the furnace filter give-away was available to all Buffalo residents, NHS currently is performing a home weatherization program that is available to Buffalo’s elderly, disabled and low-income residents, whether tenants or owners. A call to NHS will determine your eligibility and what services are available. Some

“Some years ago, when my youngest son was nine months old, we learned that he was allergic to eggs, dairy products, peanuts and tree nuts,” she added. “This was at first a difficult and frightening diagnosis, but it gave me inspiration to learn to cook for him and the family and then to write this book. “In the beginning, I would prepare something for my son and something else for the rest of the family. This got old fast. I then began taking some of my grandmother’s recipes and substituting allergy friendly ingredients for the offending ones. The results were fantastic and the foods were delicious. You can bring them to parties and gatherings and no one would guess that they are non-allergic. There are allergy free foods here that cannot be purchased in stores, such as cinnamon rolls, donuts, marshmallow fluff and sponge candy.” For more information about the nonprofit community bookstore or upcoming events, visit www.dogearsbookstore.org or call 823-2665. Resurgent South Park makes mark for city football By Mike Petro SPORTS REPORTER

By year seven for the South Park football program under Tim Delaney, players are now making a 12-month commitment throughout the year to football. That sort of buying in by players to a philosophy can make all of the difference in a program’s progression, Delaney said. After a second straight division title-winning regular season, the Sparks took the next step in earning their first trip to Ralph Wilson Stadium for a Section VI championship game. South Park, which joined Section VI in 2010 with the other city school teams, also became the first former Harvard Cup squad to advance with a 19-10 win over Hamburg on a rainy Friday night in the ClassA semifinal at All High Stadium. “This really validates everything we do,” said Delaney, a

former football player himself at South Park. “I feel really excited for the kids. It’s going to be a real special moment for them to go play at The Ralph against another quality football team.” And to think, this is the same program that was winless and scored only 12 points the season before Delaney arrived. Going into the championship game, the Sparks are 8-1 in 2014. “We’re just excited for where we’re headed,” said Delaney, who has had the same coaching staff the past three seasons. “It feels like almost a weight has been lifted off your shoulders because you’ve been aiming for it and you’re now good enough to do it, but it’s just a matter of getting it done.” Running backs Austin Neal and William Burgess shared halves in which they ripped off big chunks of yardage but it was two touchdown grabs on contested passes by Daryl Moore and a physical defensive effort that made the difference in the win. Moore caught all three passes completed by quarterback Tyree Brown for 63 yards, including a 7-yard grab

DAN HICKLING

Austin Neal (3) ran nine times for 82 yards and had a 2-yard TD in South Park’s semifinals win. which put South Park up 13-3 at halftime and then a 24-yard fourth quarter score with 7:53 left in the game to extend the lead to nine. “My quarterback has faith in me so I had to go get it,” Moore said of his TD catches. “That’s what we look to — our defense — and our offense has just come along.” Moore was well covered by Hamburg’s defensive backfield on the pair of fourth-down touchdown catches but found

a way to come down with the ball each time. In fact, on the first score, Hamburg defenders deflected the ball into the air and right into the hands of Moore. Neal ran nine times for 82 yards, including a 2-yard touchdown, in the first half, and then Burgess took over in the second half with 86 yards on 11 touches. Burgess finished with 107 yards and Neal added 106. In prior years, South Park depended heavily on throwing the ball around the field, but

Delany said now his team relies more on the run and picks its opportunities to throw the ball. “This year has been a runheavy year, so when we throw it a little bit we’re all about being opportunistic, getting the right play and using play action,” Delaney said. “But we feel good about being able to do both.” Hamburg opened the scoring, finishing the first drive of the game with a Jason Shuttleworth 37-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead. Shuttleworth would miss a long field goal in the second quarter, and South Park ran off 13 straight points before the end of the first half. The Bulldogs were unable to get 1,000-yard rusher Mitch Gomolka going. He finished with 27 yards on 14 carries. QB Alex Suchan hit 7 of 16 passes for 75 yards before standout linebacker Tom Coyne had to enter the game under center when Suchan suffered an injury. Down 19-10 in the latter stages of the game, Hamburg got down to the South Park 36 before the drive stalled. Soon after, the Bulldogs recovered a fumble at their own 39 but quickly turned the ball back

over. The fumble recovery by South Park’s Wilquan Burgess with four minutes left all but ended Hamburg’s chances. “Their defense is fast and physical,” Cauley said of South Park. “They’re coming from a lot of different angles and they put a lot of pressure on your offensive line. We normally get Mitch going but we just couldn’t do it.” The Sparks were led defensively by a linebacker corps consisting entirely of 200-pound plus players, including the Burgess brothers. Wilquan and William Burgess each finished with 12 tackles. South Park’s active defensive backfield was led by Antonio Leonard. “We’ve been living and dying by defense,” said Delaney, who credited assistant coach Nick Todaro for turning around the defense over the past few seasons. “We’re pretty good on that side of the ball now. It’s where we feel our foundation is. If we can’t get it done on offense, our defense picks us up.” South Park took on Sweet Home in the ClassAfinals Nov. 6 at Ralph Wilson Stadium. Results weren’t available at press time.

Timon soccer seniors integral in team’s title victory By Mike Pidanick SPORTS EDITOR

As their high school careers neared an end, the senior class of the Bishop Timon High School boys soccer team made

certain the Tigers would end their run on top. Seniors Pat Graham, Pat Robinson, Claudious Modi and Drew Johnson scored the goals, senior Kyle Kostek added two assists and Timon successfully defended its IAC/MMA Small Schools championship with a 4-1 win over Christian Central on Tuesday afternoon (Nov. 4) at the West Seneca Soccer Complex. “This was probably the best

game the kids played all year, in fact the last six games or so were the best we played,” Tigers coach Tom Finn said. “I think the seniors realized this is their last kick at it and they spun it into a different gear.” And they found the net when it mattered most. Graham got Timon going in the 29th minute with the game’s first goal. “He’s just a super kid, very unheralded,” Finn said. “He’s just a complete team player and

probably the smallest kids on the team, too.” Robinson capped a fine postseason with the eventual game-winner.After not scoring at all in the regular season, he picked up the game-winning goals in both the semifinals and final for Timon. “He didn’t see the field nearly as much as he could have because of some things,” Finn said. “But he showed some great senior leadership coming

up big at the end of the year.” Modi picked up the third goal, shortly before trading in his soccer spikes for basketball sneakers. As Finn said, “He’s a great athlete; in fact I believe he’s on to basketball season tomorrow.” And it was fitting that the final goal of the season came off the foot of Johnson, one of the top players in program history. It was the 11th goal of his senior season.

“I can’t say enough about him,” Finn said. “We’ve won two league championships and three division titles and a lot of kids contributed. But I don’t think we do any of that without Drew and Kyle.” In goal, Brady Rogers had 11 saves for Timon in his 16th win of the year. Timon’s season ends at 18-4 overall and that included a 6-0 mark in the Monsignor Martin Athletic Association.

Malinowski guides Buff State soccer to playoff victory By Jonah Bronstein SPORTS REPORTER

Liz Malinowski extended her college career with a golden goal. The Williamsville South graduate scored the fifth and deciding goal in a penalty kick shootout to lead the Buffalo State women’s soccer team to a victory over Fredonia in the SUNYAC quarterfinals. Malinowski and co-captain Gabrianna Boldinski (Kenmore East) anchored a defensive effort that kept a potent Fredonia side off the score sheet. The senior defender then asked to take the last shot in her last home game, and buried the game-winner. “That was a nice capstone for her senior year,” coach Nick DeMarsh said. “Espe-

cially against Fredonia. That’s always been a rival.” Breanna Knight, Meghan Allen, Megan Chapple and Kristin Seiferth also scored on penalty kicks following a 110-minute scoreless draw. DeMarsh selected his seniors, Malinowski and Chapple, for the shootout, “because they’ve got the experience and have been around the block a few times. “Liz said she’d take the last shot, which I thought was big. As a defender, she is not your typical attacker, shooter.” Fredonia out-shot Buffalo State 20-7 in the game and 12-1 in the second half. Freshman goalkeeper Nicole Torres made 10 saves in her second career shutout. “We set the team up to deal with Fredonia’s attack. We wanted to make sure we shut them down and we achieved

Buffalo State football falls

Buffalo State’s postseason hopes took a major hit last weekend when the Bengals lost 35-25 at St. John Fisher. The Bengals (5-3, 3-3) have lost two in a row and now trail nationallyranked St. John Fisher by two games in the Empire 8 Conference standings with just one conference game left to play. Ryan Carney (Olean)

caught four passes for 133 yards and a touchdown in the loss. Mike Doherty (Kenmore East) caught four passes for 87 yards. John Alessandra (Kenmore East) made a career-high 17 tackles, and Marquis Artis (Amherst) had 11 tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery. Buffalo State hosts Hartwick at noon Saturday in its home finale.

that goal,” DeMarsh said. “Liz and Gabby, both of my center-backs, had great games.” Buffalo State (7-7-5) will now travel to play No. 2 seed Cortland (6-8-2) in the semifinals Wednesday. It’s the Bengals third trip to the semis since 2010, but the program has not played in the SUNYAC championship game since 1984, when it lost on penalty kicks against Cortland. The Red Dragons won 1-0 at Buffalo State in the regular season, but the Bengals picked up a win in Ithaca last season, and came away from this season’s loss confident for a rematch. “We actually kind of wanted to get them in the playoffs because I thought we deserved more and the team would like a second crack at them,” DeMarsh said.

COURTESY OF BUFFALO STATE ATHLETICS

Liz Malinowski, a Williamsville South graduate, scored the fifth and deciding goal in a penalty kicks shootout to lead Buff State to a quarterfinal win.

Beaumont, Bengals best Cortland in overtime Sophomore Anthony Beaumont (Lester, PA/Interboro) scored his first collegiate goal in the second period, and then netted his second in overtime, to lift Buffalo State (1-1/1-1) to a 3-2 SUNYAC victory over visiting Cortland (0-1-1/0-1-1) at the Ice Arena. Beaumont redirected a point shot by Marcus Michalski (Woodstock, ON/St. Mary’s Catholic) through the Cortland goalie’s legs for the game winning goal with 1:50 remaining in overtime. Brett

Hope (Blenheim, ON/Blenheim) also drew an assist on the winning marker. Buffalo State opened the game on the power play due to a protocol violation penalty on Cortland and applied early pressure. The Red Dragons drew first blood, however, when Dan Broderick deflected a point shot by Ryan Wagner to the back of the net 8:43 into the opening period. Beaumont evened the score for Buffalo State with his first career goal on the power-play

late in the opening frame when he banged home a rebound off a Taylor Pryce (Newmarket, ON/Cardinal Carter) shot. Hope also picked up an assist. Freshman Jason Zaleski (Scranton, PA/Scranton) gave Buffalo State the lead when he wired a shot high blocker side off the rush for his first collegiate goal, on the power play. Jake Rosen (E. Amherst, NY/Williamsville North) and Michalski were credited with the assists. The Red Dragons pulled

even when Tommy Nolan capitalized on a scramble around the net midway through the period with the teams playing 4-on-4. Mike DeLaVergne (Pawling, NY/Pawling) earned his first win between the pipes for the Bengals, turning aside 34 of 36 shots faced. Buffalo State will play two more home SUNYAC games next Friday and Saturday when it hosts Morrisville State for a twin set.
