Polka band performing for Thanksgiving

On Saturday, Nov. 22, there’s undoubtedly going to be a lot of people doing their Thanksgiving shopping at the Broadway Market. Those that stop by are going to be in for a treat, as they’ll have their shopping serenaded by the New Direction Band between noon and 3 p.m.

Band members Ron Urbanczyk, Jim Raczkowski, Bob Krupka, Frank Zeczak and Gene Rzeznik will be taking the stage with their trademark Chicago Style polkas.

The difference, explains

Urbanczyk, is that their style of polka relies on a heavy snare drum beat along with a Chemnitzer concertina, clarinet, sax and bass. Missing is the piano-style accordion that most other polka bands in the area use, giving them a unique sound like the one first popularized in Chicago in the 1950s.

“Our style of polka is a little slower than the Eastern and Push styles,” said Urbanczyk. “It’s sometimes more appealing to polka dancers.”

The New Direction Band has been performing together for five years, after four of the current members left the defunct City

Side Band to reorganize into their current group.

In the time they’ve been together, they’ve already recorded and released two CD’s, with a third one on the way. Follow Directions and Clear Directions can be ordered through their web site, with Good Directions soon to follow. The new CD will have a handful of original music on it, all in the spirit of the music that they love.

“Most of our concerts include about 80 percent polkas, waltzes and obereks,” Urbanczyk said. “The rest is commercial cover music.

For the holidays, we’ll play some polka-style Christmas tunes, traditional Christmas Koledy (Polish

polka. They’ve all played festivals and cruise ships, traveling the country from Boston and Green Bay to Fort Lauderdale. In fact, before they’re going to be at the market they’re first heading off to the Dominican Republic for a 10-day Caribbean polka party.

There are a number of programs coming up for Boy Scouts who are moving in the direction of the Order of the Arrow, learning about topics from forestry to Native American history and lore. The Tifft Nature Preserve is host to a number of these programs throughout the year, and upcoming programs also include astronomy, plant science, insect study, fishing and wildlife management.

Find a new Thanksgiving wine at the Broadway Market

When it comes to making sure you bring something that’s always appreciated to Thanksgiving dinner, there’s no way you can go wrong with a bottle of wine. That’s even more true when that wine comes from a local winery, using all the flavors and fruits of our own backyard to make something truly special.

Going into a store and picking out something just by what’s on the bottle can be tricky, and if you’re looking to find something new and exciting for the table, the Broadway Market will be helping you find it. The market will be holding their annual Wine Festival from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 14

and Saturday, Nov. 15.

“The event is free and open to the public,” stressed the market’s Kathy Peterson. “Customers will be offered the chance to try a free samples of the wines, and no wine glass purchase is required.”

Wineries from throughout the Niagara Escarpment and Lake Erie’s wine country will be set up at their market with some of their favorite wines on hand for sample and purchase.

Vetter Vineyards is from Westfield, N.Y., and boasts a specialty of sweet, nontraditional wines such as a red spiced after-dinner wine, a blueberry port, and a sweet blueberry wine best served over ice.

port, sitting on land that has been dedicated to growing grapes since the 1800s. The same family – the Smiths – have been running the winery for three generations.

The Winery at Marjim Manor, located in Appleton, is known for their unique variety of wines such as their apple, peach and pear blend, and their non-traditional wines like cranberry, cherry, apricot, current, peach and strawberry.

Chateau Buffalo is as known for their craft ciders as for their wines, which include whites, Reislings, and several kinds of red wine.

Victorianbourg is located in Wilson, and is known for their traditional wines like their Chardonnay and Merlot, as well as their

fruit wines and rich chocolate wines.

In addition to being able to sample some local winery’s best offerings, attendees will also get the chance to pick up some new ideas for some of the oldest items on the Thanksgiving day menu – the sides. At noon on Saturday, the market will be holding the Thanksgiving Sweet Potato, Pumpkin, Squash and Sides Competition. It’s open all all, and judges will be picking their favorite sweet and savory dishes from the entries. One sweet and one savory winner will receive a gift certificate.

Dr. Richard T. Jurasek, Medaille College president since 2007, has announced his decision to retire in mid-summer 2015, citing health reasons for his decision to decline a contract extension offer from the college’s board of trustees.

“The Medaille College Board of Trustees is unanimously grateful to Dr. Jurasek for his nearly eight years of leadership and recognizes all of his efforts to ensure the best possible education for our students,” stated Charles

Help make Thanksgiving a reality

Thanksgiving is a time for friends and family, for huge meals, turkeys, and falling asleep in front of the television afterward.

Only, for many people in Buffalo and Western New York, the Thanksgiving dinner that others may take for granted is something that’s well beyond their reach.

That’s where the Buffalo City Mission comes in.

Chances are, you’ve driven past the Thrift Store on Dick Road, and many people have even stopped in. Those donations and purchases are helping to make Thanksgiving a re-

ality for many people, but the needs that the City Mission has are staggering.

During the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons, they’ll be serving nearly 42,000 meals. That’s a lot of food and a lot of work, and they’re looking for volunteers and donations to help make the holidays happy.

“Thanksgiving for me, growing up in a large family, always meant friends and family gathering around lots of food,” said Executive Director Stuart Harper. “When I serve the men that reside with us and the community that comes together to eat with us, I think back to those full tables of family gatherings.

Overflowing plates of food and conversation around the table; it’s Thanksgiving.”

Donating online at buffalocitymission.org will help them supply food to those who would otherwise go hungry. A donation of only $19.80 allows them to serve 10 meals – for many, that has been the first step on a long journey.

And when it comes to manning the stations for Thanksgiving, it’s a difficult thing that means relying on the community for a lot of support.

The City Mission delivers about 4,500 meals throughout the Western New York community for Thanksgiving, and in order to do so, they have a

lengthy wish list.

They need about 650 pies, either fresh baked or store bought, delivered to 100 E. Tupper between their receiving hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Nov. 25 and 26. Between Nov.10 and 14 and the 17 to the 21, they also need Turkey Express Telephone Reservationists to man the phone lines and take reservations from community members that are in need of a Thanksgiving dinner supplied by the Mission.

There’s also a need for volunteers in the receiving department for the food drive – volunteers are needed from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. from Nov. 17 to the 21 and from the 25 to the

Then, for the deliveries themselves, they need 170 delivery teams to head out into the community and bring meals to those in need. They’re looking for teams of friends and family to volunteer between 8 a.m. and noon on Thanksgiving. Each team will have between four and six sites for delivery, with each sites receiving about 25 meals. By the end of the day, that means thousands of people will be sitting down to share in a hot, delicious Thanksgiving dinner that they otherwise wouldn’t have.

The City Mission is fighting an uphill battle in the Western New York community, with more and more people turning to them every year for help.

Autumn Stamp Festival celebrates 10 years

Veterans Day means learning at Cleveland Hill Elementary School

“Students learn from many sources like books, websites and movies. The best way for them to learn our history, is to talk to a veteran. That’s what Cleveland Hill Elementary students will do on Nov. 10 when they accompany their military moms, dads, grandfathers, grandmothers, aunts and uncles to the Veterans Day Breakfast hosted

by Cleveland Hill Elementary School Library Media Center,” said Mrs. Kelly, the school’s library media specialist. The breakfast begins at 7 a.m. School music teachers Mr. Schindler and Mr. Schroeder will lead their students in perform-

ing the National Anthem and Cleveland Hill’s Alma Mater. The program will include comments by Superintendent Jon MacSwan and Principal Patrick McCabe.

“Kids should know our history,” Kelly continued.

“On Aug. 4, 2001, United States Senate Resolution 143, passed. The resolution called for educational efforts aimed at elementary and secondary school students learning about the contributions and sacrifices of veterans. Students today do not simply accept what is taught, they want to know why what they learn is important. The library media center provides and displays

resources to assist teachers as they model how to show respect, as well as the importance of patriotism.”

In addition to hosting the breakfast, the library media center salutes America’s veterans by displaying America’s White Table. The White Table is set in many mess halls as a symbol for and remembrance to service members fallen, missing or held captive in the line of duty.

Military family pictures of Cleveland Hill’s staff are prominently displayed and viewable by students in kindergarten through fifth grade as they pass the library daily. Teachers use the displays

to educate students, and teach them what it means to respect the United States and the veterans who helped make it what it is today.

Rohde to visit Erie County The Erie County Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars is pleased to announce New York State Auxiliary President Irene Rohde will make her official visit to Erie County on Monday, Nov. 24.

Rohde, of Carmel, was elected State President of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars at its 89th convention convened on June 14 in Syracuse. Rohde is a life member of the Daniel O’Brien Auxiliary #1374 in Carmel. She joined under the eligibility of her husband,

past State Commander Karl Rohde, an Army Veteran of Vietnam and served from 1968-70.

Rohde has held many positions in the organization, receiving Outstanding President of the Year in her membership group for her teams as auxiliary, county and district president. She has been department chairman in many programs and won national awards for these programs.

The day’s activities will begin with a Dutch treat luncheon at 11 a.m. at the Family Tree Restaurant at 4346

North Bailey Ave. in Snyder.

At 1 p.m., Rohde will tour the VA WNY Healthcare System, 3495 Bailey Ave., Buffalo. A reception and dinner to honor Rohde will be held at 5 p.m. at the Private Leonard Post, Jr., VFW Post 6251, 2450 Walden Ave., Cheektowaga.

Community food pantry gets new home The grand opening celebration for the Tri-Community Food Pantry’s new home, 425 Penora St. in Depew, will be held at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 15.

The grand opening celebration will be a benefit concert event featuring the Christian bands Cloverton from Nashville, Tenn. and Western New York’s own Brothers McClurg at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 15.

All proceeds will go to the Tri-Community Food Pantry in Depew.

Hunger can strike anyone at any time: a family with a sudden job loss, an elderly couple whose fixed income doesn’t allow them enough money to live on, a young couple with a special needs child whose medical expenses are not covered by insurance or a military veteran getting back on their feet after returning from service.

The Tri-Community Food Pantry is a nonprofit organization that provides food and other necessities to members in need of the Lancaster/Depew/Cheektowaga community.

Cleve Hill falls just short of fourth straight trip to the Ralph

The ending may have been heartbreaking, but there’s no debating the Cleveland Hill High School football team added another successful chapter to the program’s proud tradition.

The Eagles finished 6-3 overall and won the Class C North Division for the second year in a row, before coming up four points and 64 seconds short of a fourth straight trip to Ralph Wilson Stadium.

“This group did a great job,” Eagles coach Glen Graham said. “We started out 1-2 and to come this far and get to the sectional semifinals, I’m proud of every one of my guys.”

Cleveland Hill graduated 24 seniors from last year’s

team that reached the Class C state semifinals for the first time in school history. But despite all the new faces, the success continued on Mapleview Drive.

“It is a program from modified to JV,” Graham said. “Our coaches and players do a great job and we’re just blessed here at the varsity level.”

The Eagles will graduate their two-headed rushing monster of Grayson Taylor (1,254 yards, 16 touchdowns) and Jermaine Hairston (531 yards, seven touchdowns). Quarterback Anthony Sullivan (581 yards and six touchdowns passing, 367 yards, three touchdowns rushing) is also graduating, as are top two wide receivers: Aaron Wesley (eight catches for 201 yards on offense, two interceptions and one fumble recovery on defense) and Robert Statler (18 catches on offense, two picks and a fumble recovery on defense).

Up front, three-year standout Keyshawn Crawford will

be tough to replace along with fellow linemen Jeff Urban, Daymar Hopson and Omari Inman. Linebacker Deion Henley (25 tackles, one interception) and wide receiver Corey Tatum will also graduate in the spring.

That’s the bad news. The good news is that there’s plenty of talent coming back. Three of the team’s five leading tacklers are back, including some defensive standouts like Matt Eldridge (team-best 84 tackles), freshman Rasheem Newsome (59 tackles) Daytwon Burney (team-best six sacks).

Throw in some imports from the 7-1 junior varsity team and 7-0 modified team and it’s easy to see why there seems to be no end in sight to Cleveland Hill’s success on the gridiron.

“We’re going to miss these seniors, I can’t say enough about what they did for us,” Graham said. “But there’s a great group behind them and we’re going to keep building.”

North Cheektowaga teams gear up for OATKA championship

The Red Raiders’ regular season was over on Oct. 18 but some older players had the honor in playing in the OATKA Pee-Wee “Moving Up” game as they celebrate their graduation onto the 110-pound level.

Noah Irby showed off the skills he had all season as he rushed for four touchdowns and had over 100 yards on the ground. Logan Gray had over 50 yards rushing and added

11 tackles on defense. Jayden Meredith added eight tackles with four of them coming in the backfield for a loss. Meredith, along with Francesca Morris and Isaiah Mackey continued their success on the offensive line as they cleared the way for running backs all night. The Spartan coaches are definitely looking forward to the crop of players they receive next season.

Before next season begins, the Spartans have to finish this one. They did it in an emotionfilled first-round playoff game

against South Buffalo. In a defensive slugfest all afternoon, it took the defense to actually put points on the board, and it couldn’t have come at a better time. With less than 20 seconds remaining and the score tied 0-0, South Buffalo threw the ball into the sure hands of Spartan Monte Mason, who returned it over 60 yards for the touchdown as time expired.

Mason, a shutdown corner for the Spartans, added plenty of unassisted tackles on his side of the field against Leprechaun running backs. Defensive

lineman Keyshawn Mack and Matt “Honey Badger” Corchado displayed their dominance throughout the game. Hard running between the tackles was seen by Dalton Harper as well as Devan Dipasquale. Mack, along with Justus Williams, also had good performances on the offensive line. The Spartans headed to the OATKA championship at Hamburg High School on Sunday, Nov. 2 to face the Gowanda Panthers.

The Titans lost a heartbreaking shootout to West Seneca

West 31-29 as the Tomahawks pulled ahead in the fourth quarter. Captain wide receiver Carson Harper, elder brother to Dalton, had multiple catches as a result of crisp route running including one for a touchdown (and another that was wiped out due to a penalty) as well as solid defensive play at the safety position. Cameron Chandler, also a captain, Kevin Jobity, and captain Nolan Sirdevan were harassing Tomahawk ball carriers for much of the afternoon.

Cheektowaga saw the undefeated Crusaders take on West Seneca East. The Crusaders dominated as they have for the entire season, winning 42-0.

Touchdowns came early and often as CJ Ozolins, Javaughn Williams, and Kaiser Acosta had the Crusaders winning 28-0 by halftime. They look to finish their undefeated season at Hamburg High School as well against South Buffalo.

Maryvale changes program’s fortunes with 7-2 season

In years past, Maryvale had hardly been considered a big game on the schedule for any opponent. After all, the Flyers went five years without a playoff spot and were coming off a two-win season in 2013.

That’s all changed now.

A tremendous season for the Flyers resulted in a share of the division championship, a historical win and a playoff victory. Although Maryvale’s hope of a trip to Ralph Wilson Stadium came up five points shy, for the Flyers this is just the start

of big things.

“It’s going to be a great start for us,” senior linebacker and offensive guard Mike Kelleher said. “This year’s been great, next year is going to be great, too.

Hopefully it’s going to be great for years to come at Maryvale.”

Maryvale finished the year at 7-2 overall, including a 6-1 mark in Class B Central that resulted in a three-way tie at the top between the Flyers, Depew and Cheektowaga Central. Both of Maryvale’s losses were by five points; the seven victories were by more than 18 points per game.

The season’s biggest win came on Oct. 18 when Maryvale beat Cheektowaga on the football field for the first time since 1998 with a decisive 35-6 decision on the road.

In the end, the Warriors delivered the biggest blow in the rivalry, eliminating the Flyers from the Section VI postseason with a 26-21 victory in the semifinals.

And the success for the Flyers came with contributions from up and down the roster. Six different Flyers ran for at least 100 yards and together they rushed for more than 2,400 yards.

Defensively, Maryvale held six of nine opponents to six points or less.

Much of that started with strong play up front as the Flyers were dominant in the trenches on many nights this fall.

“After the Depew game, we really challenged our line to step up and answer the call,” head coach Jeff Buccieri said. “Since then, these guys have taken it upon themselves to be the

backbone of this team and play hard to the whistle every play.”

“We play as team, play with heart and give it our all, every game, every practice,” junior running back Marcus Ford said.

Next season, Maryvale will have to carry on without this year’s tremendous senior class that included Kelleher, Eric Graham, Brandon Bojanowski, Mike Halferty, Steve Schroeder, Demante Chatmon, Kyle Melber, Jaquar Perkins, Derrick Dirado, Mike Walizada, Raheem Doyle, Ron Ponholzer and Nick Koscinski.

But plenty of returners, including the team’s top two rushers in Ford and Kwaine Davis, leading receiver Andrew Crombie and defensive lineman Joey Cartona, who tied for the team lead in sacks.

Cheektowaga girls spikers’ season comes to an end

A surprising playoff run ended with an all-too-familiar result for the Cheektowaga Central High School girls volleyball team.

Nemesis Albion ended the Warriors’ hopes again with a 25-9, 25-19, 25-16 victory in the Section VI Class B2 championship game on Tuesday night (Nov. 4) at Lockport High School.

“Albion’s a great team

and we always seem to face them,” Cheektowaga coach Denee Hickson said. “We have a tendency to always see them in the playoffs and one of these years, we’re going to get them. One of these years.”

The Tigers made it clear right from the get-go they weren’t planning on letting this be that year. Albion jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first game and was in control for the majority of the match, which lasted a little less than an hour.

“We were not doing what we needed to do as far as what, according to our scouting report, was going to work for us,” Hickson said of the rough start. “And it came

back to bite us.”

Game 1 was never in doubt and it seemed like Game 2 was going to be the same as the Tigers led 24-13 and sat on the cusp on another convincing win. And while the Tigers did take the 2-0 lead, the Warriors made them work for it. With senior Brittany Adamczyk on the serve, Cheektowaga rolled off six points in a row before Albion closed the deal.

After a slow start in Game 3, the Warriors roared back and closed within 11-10 on a Shawnn Foster kill. But Albion responded with a 6-0 run and put the match away.

Class B title game at 6 p.m.

Thursday (Nov. 6) back at Lockport against Williamsville South, which swept Starpoint in the first game of Tuesday’s doubleheader.

Results weren’t available at press time.

The fourth-seeded Warriors were coming off of back-to-back exciting playoff wins against Olean and Depew and opened some eyes making it as far as they did despite major graduation losses.

“There weren’t many people that thought we would make it this far in the playoffs but we did,” Hickson said.

“We proved we were good enough to be in the finals, we just didn’t show up today.”

Cheektowaga avenges earlier-season loss to Maryvale, punches ticket to Ralph Wilson Stadium

It had been 14 years since Cheektowaga lost to Maryvale before the Warriors fell to their crosstown rival in Week 7. The two schools on opposite sides of route 33 knew there was a good chance of a rematch in the semifinals, when a trip to Ralph Wilson Stadium would be on the line.

The rematch was granted as both clubs won their quarterfinal matchups, and Cheektowaga — Class B’s No. 2 seed that has been a title contender in recent years but has fallen early in the postseason — wanted nothing morethantoredeemitselfagainst No. 7 Maryvale.

SeniorquarterbackZakCiezki was a part of all four Cheektowaga scores as the Warriors jumped out to a four-touchdown lead, which happened to be just enough as Maryvale battled back with 21 unanswered points and threatened to take the lead in the final minute of play before a Dylan Romanczak fumble recovery sealed the deal, lifting Cheektowaga 26-21 over Maryvale to advance to the Section VI Class B championship game at Ralph Wilson Stadium.

The Warriors, who will be making their first appearance at The Ralph since 2009, will play top-seeded Bennett, a program that joined South Park this weekend as the first schools from the Harvard Cup to make it to a sectional championship game since the Harvard Cup schools joined Section VI in 2010.

Good to see them happy.”

It has been a long and emotional journey for Fatta and Cheektowaga. Since becoming the head coach, Fatta has won at least a share of the division title each year and earned the Class B North top seed in 2012 and 2013. Those postseasons ended

in home upsets to Springville in the semifinals and Eden in the quarters, respectively.

“All the seniors that played last year had a really bad taste in their mouths,” said Ciezki, who also helped defeat Maryvale last basketball season in the ClassA1 semifinals. “We’re all captains now and we really got all the other guys motivated.

“When you’re this close and you miss it, you just want to get there. And that’s why I think we workedsohardthisweek,andwe came out and played like that.”

middle linebacker for the winners while Jerell Rolling added six tackles at outside.

Behind the likes of Bob Wilson,MikeRutledge,IanWittmer, Matt Parker, Matt Sciera and TorreyWeekley,Ciezkiranfor77 yards and two scores. “Best week of practice all year by far, said Wilson. “Everybody was busting their [tails] off and the hard work paid off.”

Ciezki threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Hakiem Black on the opening drive and had touchdown runs of 1 and 37 yards before his 61-yarder to Gibson with 36 seconds left in the first half.

But Maryvale head coach Jeff Buccieri refused to run out the clock and take it into the locker room scoreless. Eric Graham connectedwithKwaineDavisfor

a 64-yard score with 18 seconds remaining.

Maryvale followed that score by recovering an onside kick, but was unable to capitalize, taking a 26-7 deficit into the break.

The score would remain the same until the fourth quarter.

Brian Bojanowski found Drew Crombie on a halfback pass 19 yards to the Cheektowaga 8, setting up an 8-yard touchdown rush by Raheem Doyle.

Crombie came up big on Maryvale’s next offensive possession when his 22-yard reception to the 15 set up a 4-yard scorebyMarcusFord,makingita 26-21gamewith3:34remaining.

Cheektowaga ran out as much clockasitcouldbeforepuntingto Maryvale’s 33 with 39 seconds left in the contest. That’s when Romanczak recovered a loose ball on the first play of the drive to sealthevictoryforCheektowaga.

“Weweregoingbackandforth like a teeter-totter, but we were just trying to keep our heads in the game and get the win. And we did,” said Wilson.

Ford, Davis, Bojanowski and Mike Halferty ran for tough yardage behind Mike Keheller, Mike Walizada, Ron Ponholzer, Zach Burns and Jaquar Perkins, but Maryvale fell a game shorter than it would have hoped after reversing its 2-7 mark last fall to a 7-2 record this season.

The 26 points allowed was the most by Maryvale’s defense all season. Buccieri’s defensive unit had only given up more than 7 points one other time prior to the Class B semifinals.

By: Lauren Kirchmyer A cappella country music quintet Home Free visited Buffalo for the first time in March. They were touring with three other groups as part of “The Sing Off Live Tour!” after appearing on season four of NBC’s “The Sing Off,” a competition series.

Home Free, the show’s champion, was surprised to see how much appreciation of country and a cappella music there was in Western New York, causing them to want to return to the city during their “Crazy Life” national headlining tour.

“This show will be very different from our last one,” said Chris Rupp, Home Free member and creator. The show will include songs from their YouTube channel and individual songs from each person in the group, along with lighting, staging and choreography.

“It’s a family-friendly

show that appeals to every demographic. And it’s not just country music, there will be some pop and oldies, too.”

Their 34-city tour kicked off Nov. 5 in Durham, N.C. In each city, the band arrives around 9 a.m. and the crew begins their loading process in the theater around noon.

Rupp said he enjoys going to the gym, answering emails and going on social media before taking the stage around 4:30 p.m. for sound check, which is followed by a 20 to 30 minute rehearsal.

In each city, the band allows VIP ticket holders to come into the theater around 5:30 p.m. “We normally have a Q&A session, sing a song we’re not doing in the show, do a private signing, give out special goodies and take pictures,” Rupp said.

Adam and their friends Austin Brown, Rob Lundquist and Tim Foust – will then head backstage to enjoy dinner and clean up before starting their show at 7:30.

When the 90-minute show, which includes an intermission, comes to an end, fans have the chance to meet Home Free and get autographs.

This is also when the crew begins the tear down process, packing up all their equipment. Around 2 a.m. the tour bus leaves and they’re on their way to the next city to repeat the process.

“Sleeping on a moving bus isn’t the easiest thing in the world,” Rupp said.

He also finds it hard to eat well while on the road.

HOME IMPROVEMENT Store your lawnmower in just eight easy steps (NAPSI)—Chances are, your lawn mower has been a faithful fair-weather companion. So at the end of the mowing season, you want to give it the attention it deserves.

Here are some tips on what you can do now to be sure your mower will start easily next mowing season.

• Make sure your operator’s manual is on hand for quick reference whenever you work on your mower or any such equipment.

• Remove the spark plug lead wire from the plug before doing any mower maintenance, and tape or tie it out of the way.

• Remove the battery and store it in a cool, dry

place away from gas cans, the water heater or furnace.

• Change the oil. Old oil has lost much of its ability to coat and protect engine components, which could lead to damage down the road. Most people avoid changing the oil in their lawn mower because they think about having to tip the mower over to drain the old oil. They worry about spills in the driveway and a mess of rags and cardboard to catch spills. Oil removal kits make the process easier and a lot less messy. For example, the Briggs & Stratton 1.6-liter oil extractor pump has a longreach hose so oil can be

extracted through filler or dipstick holes. It is important to return and recycle used oil at the proper collection center in your community.

• Clean your mower.

Brush or hose off leaves, grass and mud. Gently tip your walk-behind mower on its side to spray the underbody. If debris is caught on the blade, use a stick or tool to remove it—never use your hands.

• Use a fuel stabilizer.
