Valenti named Buffalo Bills-National Guard Coach of the Week after upset win By Dave DeLuca SPORTS REPORTER
Rob Valenti would be the first one to say he doesn’t need the attention. But he’d be the last one to say that being recognized amongst some of the best coaches in WNY doesn’t matter. Valenti, the SpringvilleGI head football coach, has been named the Buffalo Bills-National Guard Coach of the Week after the Griffs upset East Aurora, which was previously unbeaten in the league, 28-23 on Oct. 10. “This award is a true testament to how hard people in this football program work,” Valenti said. “It starts with our coaches and it trickles all the way down to our players. To win this award after Week 6 against EA, it is significant in so many ways. “From our players perspective, they knew after our Week 5 loss to Dunkirk, we were out of the playoffs and the B-Bowl, losing three games by a combined six points. To see the resolve and fortitude to come back to work the following week and to grind and work to get better is just tremendous.” The award also gives Springville a $1,000 grant to use for some program needs. “He’d also be the first one to say that everyone had a hand in it,” assistant coach Sean Bruso said. “After the week we had against East Aurora,

He always puts the program first. He’s takes everything to heart. Everything that happens he’s very emotional about because he wants the best for everybody, players
especially” Springville has had, on paper, a head-scratching season. The Griffs lost a 22-point fourth quarter lead and lost to Fredonia, 38-36 in Week
One. They followed that up with a 20-18 loss to Olean in Week Two, getting stopped on two-point conversion attempt in the final minutes. Even after winning their next two games,
Springville was disappointed yet again, losing to Dunkirk in the final seven seconds.

Friday (Oct. 17), the Springville boys and girls cross country teams’ hard work this season paid off as individual runners placed near the top of their races at the Eden Invitational. Springville overall placed sixth among boys teams and sixth among girls teams. “All the work you put in comes out in the end,” Springville girls runner Elle Russell said. “You can see the progress
you’re making as an athlete. Overall, 201 boys from 14 area high schools and 110 girls from 11 area high schools competed in the invitational at Eden High School. St. Francis, Frontier and East Aurora would take top three overall spots on the boys side while Hamburg, Fredonia and Lake Shore took the top three for the girls. Russell and McKenzie Maloy were top finishers for the SGI girls. Russell beat her best time and placed fourth with a time of 20:06 while Maloy would follow with an impressive 20:49 finish, earning her eighth place. “You have a goal set in your mind. You just try to reach it as best and fast as you can,” Russell said about her race. Mitchell Bunic and Tyler Olrogg were among the leading runners on Springville’s boys team. Bunic was first out of the Springville boys to come in, placing 26th with a time of 18:05. “I feel like I did a lot better than I have been in the last few races,” Bunic said. “I feel like as a team, we did really, really well.”

On a rainy Thursday night (Oct.16), Springville boys soccer took on Lackawanna at home in its final regulation game. The Griffins fell, 3-1. Springville goalkeeper Nolan Gills played well, stopping 12 Lackawanna shots. The team’s only goal was scored in the first half by Damian Fisher, who finished off a pass from Dustin Emerson. Springville had four shots on goal. All of Lackawanna’s goals were scored by Ali Shawish with assists from Faisal Ali and Zaidan Moshin. Shawish opened the scoring in the first half, but Fisher and the Griffins answered just two minutes later. Lackawanna added another goal before the end of the opening half and one more in the second to round out the scoring. “I think we played very well versus Lackawanna,” said senior Owen Gow. “We played strong throughout

Trey Aebly, Mark Doud, Emerson, Fisher, Garret Frank, Calvin Gath, Gills, Gow, and Justus Hamm make up the Griffins’ senior class. Springville’s season came to an end when the team fell to Tonawanda in the first round of sectionals on Oct. 21. Aebly scored the team’s lone goal in the 2-1 overtime loss.

Springville clinches ECIC III championship, caps off 13-1 year By Emyle Watkins SPORTS REPORTER
On Tuesday (Oct. 21), the Springville girls volleyball team took on Amherst with a chance to win the division championship on the line. The Griffins won in straight sets. Springville won both their first and third games, 25-20. The second game would was a 25-15 decision. As Springville celebrated their seniors on this night, many SGI led the charge against Amherst. Megan Hanrahan proved to be a important server on the court as she finished six service aces throughout the game. Jenna Schunke had three aces and 10 kills. “Jenna Schunke was on fire [against Amherst],”

The SGI volleyball team beat Amherst on Oct. 21. head coach Kristin Hughey said. “She was by far the hardest-hitting player on either side of the net.” Throughout the game, setter Kristin “KB” Baker would prove her versatility, picking up five services aces to go with two kills and 16 assists. “Baker, again, was the rock of the team during
this game. Her setting was nearly fl awless,” Hughey said. Kayla Kessler was also among the seniors who turned in an impressive performance against the Tigers. She finished with three blocks and a pair of kills. Hughey said the Lady Griffins’ work ethic is ‘fantastic’ and suggested that it
paid off against the Tigers. “They train hard and play with their hearts,” she said. “At this point in the season, after playing together in so many games, after making adjustments after injuries and working through position changes, the girls have really learned to trust each other on the court. “Each girl gives her best in each game so she doesn’t let her teammates down.” The team’s domination in league play was this season wasn’t only impacted by Springville’s skilled seniors, but of the juniors on the team, too, and some rising stars from a junior varsity program that fi nished 13-1 in ECIC III play. Sidney Schindler, only a junior, was essential to the game as she had five kills and three blocks. Among the young players from the junior variety squad were Sydney Rosati, Sara Zimmer and Jessica Roggie. For Tuesday evening, though, Rosati was on
the court as a varsity player while Zimmer and Roggie took part in the JV game. “Varsity was temporarily plagued with some injuries, and these JV girls were more than ready to step up,” Hughey said. “Each are excellent athletes and under
coach Gainey’s training have improved their skill tremendously this season. They will also be invited to join us for playoffs.” The girls will now progress to playoffs, where they hope to maintain their winning ways.

JV spikers complete 13-1 regular season Springville The JV girls volleyball team capped off an incredible season on Tuesday night (Oct. 21) by defeating the Amherst Tigers, 3-0. The first game was intense as the score was tied 18-18 at one point. But Jess Roggie served out four consecutive points to help push the girls toward a big 25-19
win. Game two was a different story as the team dominated from the start thanks in large part to the great net play of Caroline Roy and precise passing of Lexy Sopko. That game also saw Emma Hawkes dominate from the service line in a 25-16 win. The team completed
the three-game sweep, winning 25-18. That game saw solid play from Sydney Freeman and outstanding hustle by Mallory Robel. The girls finished the season with a record of 13-1, a perfect home record of 7-0, and a ECIC III division title. The JV girls improved to 12-1 a few days earlier
O’Brien: Valenti has ‘worked tail off’ for Springville football Coach from page B1
DAVE DELUCA
Rob Valenti has been with Springville since 2009. “The way that our players responded, after a natural let down against Dunkirk,” Valenti said, “and learning that we missed the playoffs was tremendous. It really gives you a look at the character kids and the character coaches we have in this program.” East Aurora came into the game riding high on a fourgame winning streak and was the only team undefeated in Class B South. The Blue Devils previously won all of the league games by 20 points or more. “We had a staunch opponent in East Aurora, “Valenti said. “Statistically, they were the No. 1 seed in [Class] B if the playoffs started that week. Their point differential was plus-80. They were coming off a huge win against Olean in Week Five. They had a ton of momentum. “I don’t think we had that natural momentum. We were doing a little soul searching, a little bit of looking at ourselves in the mirror. I think the way we played, is true indicator of how we responded and got after it against a very good team.” Valenti is in his first year
as head coach at Springville. Valenti has coached in the program since 2009, all at the varsity level. He most recently was the team’s defensive coordinator for four years under head coach John Sopko. Valenti, a 2001 LewPort graduate, is someone that Springville players enjoy playing for. “Coach Valenti has taught me everything, “ senior Kyle Crotty said. “I haven’t played football in a long time, he has me playing some of the best football I’ve ever played in my life. He’s loud, he’s fun, he’s a great coach. He’s very uptempo; he wants everything done quickly and correct. He’s a great asset at head coach for all young players.” Despite Valenti being approved as head coach in May, he was allowed to organize team activities in the winter and early spring. Valenti started a weight lifting program in January, organized the team’s 7-on-7 games at the Buffalo Bills’ fieldhouse later in the winter and planned optional clinics in the spring and summer. “He works his butt off, the whole season, the whole off-
season,” senior fullback and linebacker Pat O’Brien said. “He’s really trying to rebuild this program and bring it back to Purple Reign. Back to the point where we were winning division titles and a state championship. He’s been working his tail off to get us back to point. He really deserves it.” The Griffs won’t be playing in the playoffs for the secondstraight year, but there still is a lot to play for. Springville is 4-3 overall after blowing out Salamanca, 54-16, last Friday. It’s the first time Springville has had a winning record at the end of the regular season since 2005. If Springville can win its final two games against Newfane and Amherst, the Griffs will have won six games for the first time 2004. “We’re definitely not playing for nothing,” O’Brien said. “Being the first team from Springville to get to six wins is a huge deal. Having a chance to do something that hasn’t been done in a decade says a lot about our head coach, the coaching staff and the players.” Springville quarterback Devin White-Kearns also has a chance to eclipse the 1,000-yard mark for the season. White-Kearns has rushed for 738 yards and has 17 total touchdowns (15 rushing, two passing) and needs 262 yards rushing in his final two games to reach the 1,000-yard milestone. Only a handful of players in school history have reached the milestone in a single season; White-Kearns would be the first quarterback to do so. Springville hosts Newfane on Friday, Oct. 24, before traveling to Amherst on Wednesday, Oct. 29.
when they turned in a dominant performance on Oct. 16, sweeping Holland, 3-0. The girls won game one, 25-10, behind the strong play of Hawkes and consistent passing by Jena Lehr. In game two, the girls started fast behind the excellent serving of Sopko. She reeled in nine consecu-
tive points to start the game and the team never looked back from there, winning a 25-8 decision. Roy was excellent at the net to help lead to the win as well. The third game saw excellent serving from Lizzy Shearer and steady setting from Meg Poppenberg to complete the sweep.

Mitch Bunic finished in 26th at the Eden Invite. Olrogg crossed only a few seconds later at 18:19, placing 32nd. “We did pretty well as a team.” Olrogg said. “It was pretty good, I mean it was muddy and you can always improve, but it was good.” Other boys runners finishing in the top five for their team were Francis Schichtel, who finished in 18:37 and placed 37th; Don Piatek, who finished in 18:48 and placed 39th; and Brad Zifra, who finished 18:49 and placed 40th. The girls team’s top five was rounded out by Megan Loop, who finished in 23:05 placed 44th; Samantha Fruehauf, who finished in 23:09 and placed 46th; and Ashley Broeneman, who finished 23:44 and placed 51st. “I feel like I did really well
compared to my other races, I felt better and in the end I had a really strong finish where I knew when I hit the line, that at that moment, that was as hard as I could go,” Loop said. “It’s a good feeling knowing I did I could go as hard as I could.” Springville’s success has been well-fought for. The runners themselves say their coach, though, is what has really helped to make them successful. “Our coach is a really good influence on us,” said Maloy. “He knows our pain,” Loop added. “He knows if we are having a bad day because he does [run] with us, instead of just not running it with us.” Springville now heads to ECICs on Oct. 25 at East Aurora High School.

Bills’ Orton getting involved, makes appearance at Doodle Bugs By Tom Gallagher SPORTS EDITOR
Having led the Bills to a pair of last-second comeback victories in his first three games under center for them, Kyle Orton has certainly endeared himself to fans in Buffalo of late. He endeared himself to a much younger contingent of fans on Tuesday (Oct. 21). Orton traded in his playbook for a children’s book when he made an appearance at Doodle Bugs! on Red Tail Drive in Orchard Park to read Rosemary Wells’ “Bunny Cakes” to 3- and 4-year-olds at the daycare center. The 10th-year NFL veteran has only been in Buffalo for a couple of months since signing as a free agent at the conclusion of training camp, but he’s already immersed himself in the Buffalo community. “Everything has been great [since coming to Buffalo],” Orton said. “Everyone has been great to us. We live in a great neighborhood and have made a
bunch of friends already. “It’s nice being in a small, close-knit community.” Orton and his wife, Bridget, are tied to Doodle Bugs through their daughter Olivia’s enrollment in the program there. Olivia, 3, was among the many children on hand to listen to Orton read Wells’ tale of a grocery store-bound Bunny on a quest to bake a cake. Orton, who grew up enjoying children’s books like “Curious George” and the “Berenstain Bears”, suggested that it was a gratifying experience. “I love being around kids and anything you can do to help kids is great,” he said. “[Doodle Bugs] has been great to us. Coming to Buffalo late, we got Olivia right into school and she loves it here. “Friday afternoons, I come pick her up here with my wife and it’s the best half-hour of my week. So anything I can do to come and help out I’m going to do.” Orton is one of a flurry of Bills that have gotten involved in the Buffalo community of late. Among

Bills QB Kyle Orton, whose 3-year-old daughter Olivia is a student at Doodle Bugs, read to a group of children at the daycare center on Oct. 21. them, center Eric Wood teamed up with Carly’s Club for a Jocktails event a few weeks ago, Keith Rivers appeared at PS 79 in Buffalo in support of the school’s launch of a Fuel Up to Play 60 campaign, and Brandon Spikes chaired the Buffalo Zoo’s ‘Adopt an Animal’ program and appeared at the zoo for a meet and great with fans in September. Additionally, a host of Bills are involved in the
organization’s ticket donation program and were in Niagara Falls for the Bills’ ‘Pinktober’ event earlier this month. “We have a lot of guys on our team that give back to the community and spend a lot of time and effort doing so,” Orton said. “I think all of our players know it’s important and they do a good job with it.” While Orton and the Bills were off on Tuesday, with a visit to the AFC East’s last-
place 1-6 New York Jets on the horizon Sunday (Oct. 26), it was back to the playbook for them on Wednesday. The team eked out a home victory over Minnesota last week when Orton guided the offense on what seemed like an improbable 80-yard drive in the final minutes that was capped off by top pick Sammy Watkins’ game-winning touchdown reception with 1 second left. It was Orton’s second display of late-game heroics since joining the Bills. He led the team on a lastminute drive against Detroit two weeks ago and helped to set up Dan Carpenter’s game-winning 58yard field goal with 4 seconds left. “Hopefully we don’t have to make it a fourthquarter game all the time and we can play better earlier in the game, but the wins have been exciting,” said Orton, who backed up Tony Romo in Dallas the last two seasons. “They’ve been fun. We’ll take them any way we can get them and hopefully we can keep
on doing it.” It’s possible if Orton continues to put up the numbers he has through three games. In leading the Bills to a 2-1 record since taking over for second-year QB EJ Manuel, Orton’s thrown for 890 yards and five touchdowns, numbers that prorate to over 4,500 yards and 25 touchdowns in a 16-game season. He’s just grateful to have the opportunity to start again. “I love it here,” Orton said. “I’ve made that known and I think everybody in the organization knows how much I appreciate that they’ve brought me in.” The Bills have a chance to improve to 5-3 when they take on the Jets at 1 p.m. inside MetLife Stadium. The Jets have lost six straight since opening the season with a win. Percy Harvin, who New York traded a conditional pick for last week, will make his Jets debut as a receiver and kick returner. The game will be broadcast on CBS.
DeMarsh earns 100th victory, still has one goal in mind By Jonah Bronstein SPORTS REPORTER
Nick DeMarsh took over the struggling women’s soccer team at Buffalo State College a dozen years ago with one goal in mind. “I wanted to win the conference and represent this school on the national level at the NCAAs,” said DeMarsh, a three-time All-SUNYAC player for the Bengals who assisted the men’s program for four years prior to becoming the women’s head coach. That has not happened yet. “So we still have some work to do,” DeMarsh is quick to point out. But the program has come a long way under DeMarsh’s direction. DeMarsh entered this weekend’s homestand with 101 career victories. In the 21 seasons prior to
DeMarsh taking over, the Bengals won 114 games. “I have to give a lot of credit to Jerry Boyes, our athletic director, for allowing me to build the program and build the team,” DeMarsh said. “This was a situation that really needed to be built from the ground up.” DeMarsh was teaching at Native American Magnet school and coaching the Bengals part-time during his first two seasons, before Boyes promoted him to a full-time coaching position. “When you are a part-time coach, you are going to get part-time results,” DeMarsh said. “We really didn’t start winning until I got the job fulltime.” The Bengals have posted winning records in seven of the past 11 seasons, and last year finished second in the SUNYAC. With a very young roster this
season, the Bengals are 6-7-1 and 3-4 in conference play. Buffalo State hosts New Paltz (8-6-2, 2-3-2) at 3 p.m. Friday. A win would solidify the Bengals at sixth place in the SUNYAC standings and keep them out of the play-in round of the postseason tournament. “We want to take it one game at a time, and really, all that matters for us is our next game,” DeMarsh said. Buffalo State hosts defending champion Oneonta at 10 a.m. Saturday and wraps up the regular season Oct. 29 with a non-conference home game against St. John Fisher. When DeMarsh took over the Bengals program he had players who weren’t even starters on their high school teams. DeMarsh, who lives in North Buffalo and is the director of coaching for the Kenmore Soccer Club, has

But the Bengals are captained by local recruits in senior Liz Malinowski (Williamsville South) and junior Gabrianna Boldinski (Ken-
more East). “Liz came to us with great experience in terms of highlevel club soccer and has really learned the ropes of college soccer,” DeMarsh said. “She’s a very smart player, a good student, and a good example for our younger players.” Boldinski is “probably the best center defender in the SUNYAC,” DeMarsh said. “She’s an absolute monster of a ball-winner. I could probably player her at any position on the field.” Sophomrore midfielder Katie Shaw (Newfane) has been key contributor for the Bengals this year and is pushing to be a captain next season, DeMarsh said. With 100 wins in his review mirror, DeMarsh has no plans to stop before he reaches his ultimate goal. “I’m pretty stubborn,” he said. “I would never leave the job undone.”
Simonick inducted into Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame By Catherine Miller THE SUN CORRESPONDENT
It’s a good time to be a sports fan in Buffalo. The Pegula family has made more headlines than money recently – and the players on the Bills and Sabres are doing their best to make their owners proud. As Buffalo’s name rises to the top pages of nationwide sports news outlets, the newest group of local sports honorees were inducted into the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame on Oct 16 – and one of the inductees was the Old First Ward’s Robert “Rip” Simonick. By many measures, Rip Simonick has led a fairly basic life. He grew up in the Old First Ward amidst a great group of family and friends and attended Bishop Timon High School. He married the
love of his life, MaryAnn “Maize” McGuire, a Mount Mercy Academy alumni. He took a job just a few blocks away from his childhood home and has worked for the same company for the past 44 years, presently living about a half-hour from his original place of birth. Pretty standard by most counts. So why, then, when you ask a man like former Sabre Rob Ray to tell you one thing about Simonick, he just throws his hands up in the air and tells you that it’s impossible to say just one thing? Simonick doesn’t work for just any company. Simonick, known to many, is the head equipment manager of the Buffalo Sabres. He has designed specialized gear for players when they were in need, learned players’ preferences on how they liked their skates sharpened, and when equipment
was all set and they just needed someone to talk to – Simonick was there. What you may not realize is that Simonick has been with the Sabres since day one – and has never left – becoming the most skilled and tenured equipment manager in the league. He was there for the ups – like his favorite seasons in 1975 and 1999 – and he refuses to talk about the lows of the “no goal” days. Rip’s knowledge and expertise in the NHL goes well beyond his title as head equipment manager for the Sabres. “Rip is just a tremendous guy,” said Rob Ray of the man he introduced at the awards banquet for the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame. “Everybody in the NHL franchise knows him and everyone respects him. He is the father of the fran-
chise.” Ray continued to share personal thoughts on his admiration for the man that knew exactly what equipment Ray needed to play and the words he needed to hear before heading onto the ice. “We were rookies together,” stated Gilbert Perreault, who took center ice in 1970 as Rip stood behind the scenes making sure the players had all they needed to play in the Sabres’ inaugural season, “Rip was a great guy then, and he’s a great guy now.” Other hockey names mimicked the views of Ray and Perreault. Ray rattled off dozens of other NHL names that look up to Simonick, the renowned equipment guru. Ice manager Bob Strianese and Digger Kennedy, father of NHL player Tim Kennedy, both spoke highly of their friendship with Si-
monick. Much of Simonick’s family still lives in the Old First Ward, and many attended the GBSHOF awards dinner, sharing similar thoughts on the greatness of Simonick. He had more family and friends attend the awards dinner than any other inductee. Simonick never stepped out on a professional field in uniform, never scored the winning goal and was never nominated as an MVP. Still, his name is known in the sports industry better than most and for more decades than many, and he is the only member of the NHL franchise to work from day one to today. Many NHLers state that it’s Simonick’s personality that makes him unique. In addition to his equipment expertise, it is his ability to listen when players need listening to that endears him
to so many. And if you ask Simonick – he believes he’s important to the game on a very basic level. “Hey, you can’t play the game without equipment,” Simonick said with a smile. Whether talking about hockey or life in general, Simonick is correct – and he has definitely brought forth the right equipment to help bring out the best in our players from the days of the French Connection, to the seasons when Ray and Brad May battled in corners with opposing players, to the present-day Pegula era. With everything that he has given to the game of hockey, there is one thing that he would like to get from it in return, and that is to see Lord Stanley’s Cup in Buffalo. But for now, he’s content to join a host of great names in the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame.

Time for tributary trout encounters and new friends per hour, accompanied by high winds. Not the best fishing conditions! For the last several weeks, steelhead anglers around Western New York and northern Pennsylvania have been anxiously waiting the first chill of fall weather followed by that first good cold rainstorm. That is what is required to entice our Lake Erie population of steelhead to enter the streams and head upstream. Last weekend, the hardy steelheaders got their wish, except it was more of a Friday overnight monsoon precipitation period, that made for a greater fishing challenge. Fishing with fellow outdoor writer associates, Tim Murray, a New York Outdoor News reporter from Corning; Victor Attardo from eastern Pennsylvania and book author fame and Craig Robbins from Jamestown – who is a video journalist, outdoor columnist and envoy of the Chautauqua County tourism group, we were guided to some of Western New York’s finest steelhead waters on Saturday and Sunday. Our local guides were Drew Nisbet from Clarence and Alberto Rey from Fredonia. Nisbet is a precision-thinking fly rod specialist who shared several styles of fly rod and fly choice logic with us for varying water flow conditions to be found fishing any of the fine Chautau-

Our beach residence received the accompanying sound of the heavy surf and
waves when Lake Erie is subject to high winds. Actually, it was exciting! It was spooky too, in the darkness of night. Our alarms went off at 4:45 a.m. and the black coffee was necessary to get most of us moving, though Robbins used his stage voice

Rey is an internationally famous wildlife artist and nationally recognized steelhead fishing guide who provided leadership for stream choices, organized our start time, provided a myriad of fishing options and invited us to a very fine shore lunch. Our trio of anglers met each other courtesy of Pamela Forge, proprietor of a spacious bed and breakfast lodging located at Sunset Bay, where Craig Robbins provided directions to nearby outdoor shops and
details for fishing the steelhead waterways of Chautauqua County. We met our guides over a tasty dinner at the Sunset Bay Sportsman’s Restaurant on Allegheny Road near the recently repaved New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Cattaraugus Creek boat launch. As we filled our tummies with scrumptious roast beef and fish fry choices, the weather outside resembled the South Pacific rainy season. The Southern Tier area was receiving more than an inch of rain

Fishing from Page B5
to threaten Murray with a bucket of rainwater if he didn’t come down soon at 4:55. Got us all laughing early! Rey and Nisbet explained that the Cattaraugus was unfishable due to the heavy rain, so we explored Little Canadaway Creek, Scott Creek, Beaver Creek, Walnut Creek, Canadaway Creek and finally, settled on fishing Silver Creek. It was running slightly turbid, but the 8-inch water clarity was not bad compared to the muddy flow of the other waterways. Rey tied us up with twoegg fly pattern rigs about 10 inches apart, made with size 14 and 16 Orvis® scud hooks, touting a tungsten bead head for weight on a three-foot long 7-pound test fluorocarbon tippet tied to a very tiny size 10 saltwater swivel, where an indicator float was also placed. We fished for two hours and our guides felt we should have been able to see fish swimming up through the waterfall areas, but there were none, so we moved on. After exploring three additional spots, it was lunchtime. Rey welcomed us to his home and introduced us to his family where his wife, Janiele, provided a fivecourse, sit-down lunch! We laughed, joked and shared conversation, and I think we all became friends for life in those 45 minutes. As guests, we toured Alberto Rey’s art studio and were in awe by the depth of color and 3D-like detail of his work, mostly large, wall-size paintings of fish; trout and steelhead, first
captured by photographs on the stream when an angler fooled the fish and released his catch to live and return to spawn yet another time. Rey helped us to recognize that perhaps that is the greatest gesture, in-kind, that an angler can bestow on his captured prey. We moved on in the afternoon to fish Chautauqua Creek, where more accessible fish were found. While a large assortment of fishing tackle options are open to steelhead anglers, Rey and Nisbet both prefer fly rod tackle and Orvis supporting hardware because it is durable and top quality. My all-day use of a 2-3/4 ounce, 9-foot, Orvis Access 6-weight fly rod and matching single-action reel is proof of that. Nisbet says he has also watched 5-by-5 foot long schools of 10 to 20 pound king salmon heading upstream near his 400 acre family farm on the Cattaraugus. Who would have guessed that? Our WNY salmonid and steelhead fishery is world class, so are our local guides! To experience some of the same simple stream fun, consider contacting these top fishing guides in nearby Chautauqua County. Contact Alberto Rey at 410-7003 or visit www.albertorey.com. NYS Small Game Seasons are Open Our New York State small game seasons attract tens of thousands of hunters from all age groups, the open seasons are lengthy too. The Southern Tier cottontail rabbit season runs Oct. 1 through Feb. 28, 2015 with a daily
bag limit of six. The squirrel season for gray, black and fox squirrels runs Sept.1 through Feb. 28, 2015 with a daily bag of six. There is no closed season for red squirrels. Ruffed grouse season runs Sept. 1 through Feb. 29, 2015 with a daily bag of four birds. The pheasant season below Route 20A in the southern tier runs from Oct. 18 to Feb. 28, 2015, two birds per day, while above Route 20A and east toward Syracuse, the season runs Oct. 18 to Dec. 31, same daily limit. Regulations to know for hunting small game are important to understand. Rifles, handguns and air guns are not allowed for hunting pheasant, migratory game birds or turkey, but you are allowed to hunt turkey with a shotgun or handgun when using shot no larger than No. 2 and no smaller than No. 8. Air guns are allowed to hunt squirrels, rabbits and designated furbearers such as raccoons and coyotes, and unprotected species like red squirrels. Also, a bow or crossbow may be used to hunt small game.
