NT SUN CORRESPONDENT

Winning Smiles Pediatric Dentistry is in preparation for their 8th annual candy buy-back program. On November 1st, the office will open its doors to families who got way too much Halloween candy

the night before. The office buys back the candy for a dollar a pound and also gives each child who comes a toothbrush and a chance to win a door prize. There is also fun entertainment at the office. Chuckles the clown is great at making balloon animals and there are of-

ten troops too to thank children for their donation. All the candy is then packed up and shipped courtesy of UPS to North Carolina.

The second graders at St. John the Baptist School in Kenmore were celebrating a fall favorite: Johnny Appleseed. Students wore red and brought in treats made with apples in honor of him. Second grader Lily Cook explains, “Johnny Appleseed was born on Sept. 26, 1774, so we’re celebrating his birthday. I read a story about him that said he traveled across the United States planting apple seeds wherever he went. He helped to plant apple trees in many states.” Second grade teacher Gina Morelli ensured

there were a variety of apple treats for students to sample. Apple slices dipped in sauces, mini-apple pies, and apple cider were just some of the many foods shared. Evan Richey passed his homemade apple muffins among his classmates, saying, “Johnny Appleseed went around sharing his apple seeds with many people. Thanks to him, I’m able to share my mom’s apple muffins with my friends today.” What a delicious way to celebrate the season.

The candy is then donated to Packs 4 Patriots, an organization whose stated mission is to “ support troops and their family members by providing care and comfort items and expressions of appreciation for their service and sacrifices.” The organization provides care packages year round for soldiers abroad. “Some people have wondered if we care about the soldier’s teeth,” laughed Chelsea Merlo the marketing coordinator at Winning Smiles Pediatric Dentistry, “We send them toothbrushes and toothpaste too, and their adults they can make their own decisions.” Merlo said that most parents are happy to encourage their kids to do something nice with the pounds and pounds of candy they collect on Halloween instead of gobbling it all down in one sitting. The staff at Winning OPEN YEAR ROUND

19

Smiles Pediatric believe that the program is one small way of encouraging children to make responsible choices about their health. In recent years the amount of sugar consumed by the average child has skyrocketed and has contributed to large scale problems like childhood obesity, diabetes, behavioral problems and cavities. The candy buy-back program started eight years ago as a small initiative by Dr. Michael Foley who was concerned about the loads of candy kids in his neighborhood were getting. In 2006 the dentist began the tradition by handing out dollar bills to trick or treaters in his neighborhood to spread the news about the program. The initiative started off collecting about 50 pounds, but it has now grown tremendously. Last OPEN 7 DAYS

year more than 5,000 pounds were collected. “Seven to eight pallets of candy is a lot of candy,” Merlo laughed as she recognized UPS for shipping the candy to North Carolina free of charge. Local schools have got involved encouraging kids to bring in their candy to school where it is also collected. At school the money collected is used for well needed school supplies in the classroom. “The Kenton schools are by far the rock stars of the candy buy-back program... They get really into it,” said Merlo as she described their fierce competitive attitude about the program. Candy will be collected from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1. City twinkles once again By Mery Dorr

NT SUN CORRESPONDENT

A crowd of about 100 people gathered for a conversation with author Lauren Belfer in the City of Tonawanda library Saturday, Oct. 11. The author has penned two novels; however the focus of the gathering was on the authors’ first novel “City of Light.” The novel is a historical fiction that showcases Pan American Buffalo and the technological revolution that occurred in the city in the early 1900s. Belfer was raised in the 1970s in the height of the economic depression in Buffalo. After a lifetime of being unmotivated by the city she was raised in, it was serendipitous that the author was inspired to write “City of Light.” The novel took six years to research and write. On Saturday it took the author about 30 minutes to give the audience a visual and oral tour of her inspiration and the effort it took for her to gather material. Belfer described how she was in-

spired to include additional characters as she unearthed articles and accounts of influential people during Pan American Buffalo. Along with her husband Michael Marissen, who manned the visual equipment, Belfer showcased pictures of famous, and some forgotten, significant Buffalonians. She included slides of Buffalo architecture, some of which made it into the novel. The audience laughed at Belfer’s story of how she spontaneously received a tour of the Coatsworth mansion, after approaching someone moving into the home. Belfer pointed out Mary Talbert was only known to her for the housing project with her namesake in Buffalo. During her research, Belfer re-discovered Talbert and her contributions to the city and was inspired to write her into the novel. Belfert now lives in New York City; she explained much of her research was done at the library. She explained the libraries, both in New York City and Buffalo, are loaded with

information about Buffalo and the surrounding area. While researching in Buffalo she did venture outside to find existing hints of historical Buffalo. She said, “The old city is all around us.” The slides showed the transformation of majestic mansions and parks into parking lots and highways. Belfer also pointed out existing structures that hint to Buffalo’s regal past. On West Ferry Street the red brick wall that once fenced in the Albright estate now stands among a cluster of homes. Librarian Betsy Higgins invited the author to speak at the library. Higgins explained “City of Light” was published in 1999, making it really old in book years, but it still gets checked out. Higgins described Belfer

as an advocate for libraries. She said, “She really does her homework. She goes to the NY public library. When she comes to Buffalo, she goes to the downtown library; she goes to the historical society library, so she really uses libraries. It comes out in her books, she knows her stuff. She is very informed.” Belfer’s first short story was published after 43 rejections and her second after 27 rejections. Belfer credits her tenacity to her Buffalo roots. She joked that in Buffalo she learned to never give up and always keep going, akin to the city itself. Belfer believes the city of Buffalo is rejuvenated and once again the twinkling city of light.

Opinions & Editorial W W W. C P O W N Y. C O M

Plan to raise elected officials salaries not supported Recently the Citizens Salary Review Commission released its report, calling for salary increases for the county executive, comptroller, sheriff and clerk. It was the first report since 2004 and analyzed the fact that elected officials’ salaries hadn’t been raised since 1996. I think the Commission did a thorough job and I want to thank the members for the time they committed to creating their recommendations. The total increase would be $77,305 annually and the commission said the increases would bring Erie County on par with comparable counties. The following increases were recommended: county executive - $103,248 to $126,400, a 22 percent increase; sheriff - $79,092 to $102,400, a 29 percent increase; comptroller - $80,613 to $98,750, a 22 percent increase; and the clerk - $79,092 to $91,800, a 16 percent increase. It was recommended that the legislators’ salaries remain the same. After the report was released, I joined my colleagues in the Majority Caucus in issuing a statement that we opposed the recommendations and that we would vote against increases. I believe that now is not the appropriate time to raise elected officials’ salaries. While I believe there is some merit to certain points made in the report, my decision to not raise the salaries is because of the taxpayers who would fund them. I have met many families who are struggling, making the same wage they have for

years because our local economy is not strong. Businesses are fighting to stay open and as a result, workers are impacted. I have also met many residents who were forced to switch jobs, start over and take a cut in pay just to find work. Right now, to raises the salaries of elected officials would be imprudent. We pay some of the highest taxes in the country and Erie County’s economy continues to struggle. A recent report on poverty shows we have a long way to go to recover. Right now, elected officials should not receive a salary increase. Many residents have reached out to me, voicing their opinion about this topic. To date, everyone I have heard from opposes the raises. The Legislature’s Majority Caucus wants to ensure we provide ample opportunity for residents to weigh in before we vote. A public forum will be held soon to provide residents that platform. As soon as the date and location are finalized, we will be announcing the details. You can also send your comments to me at ted.morton@erie.gov or directly to the Clerk of the Legislature at 92 Franklin St., Buffalo, NY 14202, where they will be part of the official record. If you have any questions about the Citizens Salary Review Commission’s recommendations or another county matter, please contact me at 858-8856. Erie County Legislator Ted Morton

A Democrat supporting Ortt Recently there has been a series of letters in several newspapers in support of Johnny Destino for State Senate. Their general theme has been guilt by association of Rob Ortt because he is a republican. The letters mention the “debacle in Lockport,” Steve Richards, and George Maziarz’s resignation, yet they fail to mention the halting of the campaign investigation of irregularities by the democrats Cuomo and Schneiderman. The letters say they’re not “antiOrtt.” Oh Well! The inference is that we should be

suspicious and question Ortt’s integrity, yet they fail to mention Ortt’s military service to his country in defense of our freedom. Nor do they mention Destino’s change of party affiliation to suit his political aspirations. In another letter some of the Republican Party’s chairmen mention the tax rate in North Tonawanda versus Lockport and Niagara Falls, but fail to compare the progress that has been made under Ortt’s leadership. Nor did they mention the life support the city of Niagara Falls is on from the casino, or

that Lockport needs to borrow money to provide standard civic services. One of the non-mentions is that Destino has never governed anything, as has Ortt, but they conveniently omit that. Another letter alludes to Destino’s support of education. While I’m sure that Destino is good man, I don’t know where it’s said that being a supporter of education is what qualifies one for leadership at the state senate level. Lastly, it would be totally naïve to think that if the democrats gain control of the senate, in addition

to the assembly that they already basically own, that it won’t affect what upstate and Western New York receive in financial assistance from state government. I’m a life-long democrat, but this time I have to think of what I believe is best for my home and community, and that means supporting Rob Ortt for state senate. Karl E. Bauer North Tonawanda

Tonawanda High School to perform ‘The Addams Family’ By KImberlee Sabshin NT SUN CORRESPONDENT

For the first time in Western New York, a high school will pay tribute to the macabre family that has been featured in comics, a live-action 1960s television show and various animated series to the stage. Tonawanda High School will put on its production of “The Addams Family” musical 7 p.m., Thursday and Friday, Nov. 13 and 14; 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 15; and 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 16., keeping in the spirit of the Halloween season even after it is over. All performances will be held in the auditorium of the junior-senior high school complex at 600 Fletcher St., Adult tickets are $10, while students and senior tickets are $7. The musical came to Shea’s Performing Arts Center in downtown Buffalo in 2011, and is based on the text by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, music

and lyrics by Andrew Lippa, and characters created by Charles Addams in the comics, which he first drew in the 1930s. Earlier this month, the cast of “The Addams Family” was about a week into their rehearsals, but music, singing and excitement could be heard in the high school auditorium after school hours. As of Thursday, Oct. 2, art teacher and theatre producer Daniel Lynch, who is directing the musical, said the students were beginning to learn the music, stage blocking and choreography for the production. “We selected ‘The Addams Family’ because it is a new show that offers unique challenges for our students,” Lynch said. “The show offers an interesting story line, outstanding musical score, and dramatic opportunities unlike no other show. We believe this show will excite and motivate our students. This show also offers opportunities for students in the

ensemble to stand out.” The musical’s full cast, most of whom are seniors, includes Connor Maxwell as Gomez Addams, Erin Burris as Morticia Addams, Justin Pope as Uncle Fester, Meghan Bozeman as Grandma, Jaimee Harmon as Wednesday Addams, Ben Thurston as Pugsley Addams, Michael DeSantis as Lurch, Kyle LeBlanc as Mal Beineke, Marina Tighe as Alice Beineke and Cullen Colosimo as Lucas Beineke. Lynch said “countless hours” will typically go into preparing for Tonawanda High School musicals, and the cast rehearses six days a week. As the cast prepares their lines, an additional team of parents, staff members and members of the stage crew also work behind the scenes to create the costumes, set and props. Although some of the

school’s past performances have included students from the entire middle and high school complex, “The Addams Family” will include only high school students in the cast. Lynch said an additional show, “Cinderella,” has been added in February for the younger students. The cast was announced on Sept. 11 after rehearsals ran from Sept. 8 through Sept. 11. “The show is known as being very funny, and having the kind of part that I do as Grandma, I’m definitely very grateful, because I can venture out and just do my own things when I do it, and it’s definitely going to be an opportunity to improve my acting, because it’s what I want to do,” Bozeman said. During a rehearsal early this month, Maxwell commented of his role as Gomez, the Addams Family

patriarch, “They’re all completely different; they’re all really intricate, there’s a lot of stuff that goes into deciding what your character is going to be like. Everyone can just look at the TV show or the movie and go, ‘Oh, yeah, that’s Gomez,’ but you can’t just be Gomez, or Morticia, or Fester. You have to make them your own, make them interesting, and bring the audience in.” For Lynch, performing this unique show will be a challenge, but one the entire cast, from the directors to the students in the cast, are ready to take on. “We are very excited to be the first in the area to put on this show,” he said. “Our cast has learned about the comic artist, Charles Addams, and the evolution this kooky, mysterious and spooky family has undergone.

Disabled American Veterans honor Burger King By Mary Mazur

NT SUN CORRESPONDENT

Four elderly gentlemen slowly made their way across the Burger King parking lot at the corner of Sheridan Drive and Delaware and into store #953 last Friday, Oct. 10. Dressed in their blue service uniforms featuring all kinds of honors, the men came to Burger King to bestow an honor of their own to the store manager Lisa Dudkiewicz. Gerald Tidd, Robert DiBerardino and Michael Newton Sr. all served their country during the Vietnam era and Bill Dibble served and was injured in World War II. All four men could talk for hours about their life changing experiences in the service. Dibble spent 21 months as a prisoner of war in Germany after being captured at the invasion of Sicily when he was sent out on daylight patrol. At 93, Dibble is “one of the

hardest working members” of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 120 according to his friend and fellow veteran Tidd. Now, years after their service in the Armed Forces, the men are still serving their country by taking care of their own, one disabled, homeless or hungry veteran at a time. “We are busy collecting all the time. Clothing articles, food, everything,” said Dibble as he smiled in regard to the amazing support they receive from the surrounding area. The men fill a truck every week that is full of donations for veterans, but it still never seems to be enough. Although today one of the most vexing problems in American society is the outstanding number of veterans that are jobless and/or homeless many times due to the disability they sustained while serving their country, times are in fact nicer to veterans than they used to be. “The VA hospital in

Private party classified ads for items under $100 are

Buffalo I think is one of the best in the country if not the best. I started going in the 60s, when I got out. I had an accident in the service that cut my career short and I started going in the 60s and it was not a nice place to be at all. It’s a wonderful place now. They are polite, they are courteous and they try to help you in every way they can,” said DiBerardino, who served a short time in the Vietnam Era. While public opinion and public hospitals have changed for the better the need is still “so great, especially with the holidays coming up,” explained Tidd, leading the initiative to honor Burger King Store manager Lisa Dudkiewicz for her efforts to help the DAV. “This particular Burger King has given us more than all the rest of the fast food restaurant in Western New York. They give us between one to two thousand dollars a year … And maybe someone gets

kicked out of their house or something, so you give them some coupons so they can eat for a few days until they get back on their feet … This place has been the best to us for the past several years. We got a few coupons from McDonalds and a few coupons from Wendy’s and that’s exactly what I mean, a few, like $20 worth. Where here we get five hundred to a thousand a crack,” said Tidd. The men presented Dudkiewicz and her store, located at Sheridan and Delaware in Town of Tonawanda, with a plaque as a token of gratitude. Dudkiewicz who had to wait a while to come out and receive the gift because the store was so busy was touched by the men’s gesture. “Thank you so much … you know we will always do what we can,” Dudkiewicz said as she held the plaque and posed for a picture.

Richards’ drive, competitive nature helps him lead Tonawanda boys soccer By Dave Ricci SPORTS REPORTER

It was one of those seemingly innocuous moments that fill every sports season. The kind of moment you might not give a second thought to. But in the big picture, that single moment in time not only defined Chuckie Richards’ competitive fire, it also revealed a future leader in the making. Richards, then a seventh grader on the Tonawanda Warriors modified soccer team, took issue with his team’s lack of focus by raising his voice and telling them to listen to their coach. “It was frustrating. Everyone was fooling around and we had a really big game or something,” Richards, now a senior captain on the varsity team, recalled. “I was just getting really frustrated. I started yelling trying to get guys to pay attention.” While Richards didn’t think much of that moment, it was a defining event indeed as it showed the kind of character he has. Most kids would have followed the group by either laughing right along and causing some other distraction of their own, but not Richards. He had the courage and character to buck what the group was doing and do what was right. “I always try to be a leader when I can,” Richards modestly stated. “Like, if we’re practicing

JEFFREY T. BARNES

Chuckie Richards (7) is a key defensive player for the Tonawanda boys soccer team. I like to stay focused because how we practice is how we’ll play in a game most of the time.” Upon hearing that story, Tonawanda varsity coach James Gabor said it was a moment frozen in time that told him Rich-

ards was a young man that could be counted on. “It was a story that the modified coach had actually told me,” said Gabor. “They were practicing and I was just asking how his kids were. And he was telling me about that.

When he told me, I was definitely looking forward to having Chuckie on my team sooner than later. Knowing that he has that kind of attitude and that desire to make sure things are getting done the way they should be.”

Now in his third season of varsity with the To n a w a n d a Wa r r i o r s , Richards and fellow senior Nate Holler are serving as co-captains. Richards has been in the heart of one of the Warriors’ most interest-

ing time frames. As a sophomore, Richards was part of the Warriors team that made a stunning run to the 2012 Section VI Class B2 championship, the program’s first sectional crown in 20 years. Last season, Richards was suddenly a veteran on a team that lost 11 seniors from that title team and struggled to find its way. The Warriors are much improved this season and have counted on Richards as the anchor of their defense. At the heart of it all is Richards’ competitive drive. There is no other way to put it than Richards hates to lose. “He definitely wants to win. Every time he goes out there he’s competitor,” said Gabor. “It’s not really something you can teach kids to have but it’s definitely good for other kids to kind of see that fire, that intensity out there.” Richards’ teammates see that competitive spirit. They feed off of the fire he brings and try to raise their game to match the level of what their captain brings each day. “I always push to do my best no matter what it is,” said Richards. “Even if we’re losing by a lot, you shouldn’t give up. You should still try and do the best that you can.” Richards demands the best from himself and always does his best to push teammates so that they can reach their potential as individuals and as a team.

‘Gatorade Player of the Game’ provides positive reinforcement in challenging season for Thunder By Dave Ricci SPORTS REPORTER

Catherine Meegan couldn’t help but chug her Gatorade after the game. The sports drink did more than just quench Meegan’s thirst. It was recognition for a job well done. “I actually did (drink it) in the car on the way home,” Meegan said with a smile. Opening the 2014 season with wins in two of its first three games, the Mount St. Mary Thunder soccer team was off to a strong start. But seemingly with each passing day, the journey of the season became more

and more challenging. The losses added up, as did the injuries, to the point where the Thunder’s numbers were so depleted that it was lucky to field a full squad of 11 starters at any given time. Still, through it all, the Thunder has shown amazing resiliency as a team. It’s never let anything get it down or keep players on the team from working their hardest. Seeing such strong, honest efforts from her girls every day, coach Marissa Dauria said they deserved some kind of reward. Thus, the Gatorade Player of the Game was born. Dauria and her assistant, Laura Ellis, select a player(s) who best represents the kind of effort they want to see in a game. “They seem to really like it,” Dauria said. “Initially, it was Laura’s idea. She thought we were playing really well

you’re the MVP of the game, you get a Gatorade. It helps motivate you to do better.” Knowing that words can sometimes ring hollow in the face of a loss, Dauria and Ellis said even something as simple as a bottle of Gatorade and to have the spotlight for a moment or two can serve as a source of positive reinforcement for the girls and show that they are playing well. And that success isn’t measured just in wins and losses. “It’s extremely satisfying,” said senior Anna Allaire, who was a co-winner with Meegan on Sept. 19. “Gatorade even Annie Hoodmaker, left, and Sara Ngo earned tweeted (a congratulations) at Gatorade Player of the Game honors on Oct. 14. me and Catie Meegan, which was totally unexpected.” Dauria, who selects the Player but we weren’t having good well today’?” of the Game with Ellis, said results in the game. So how do “I think it helps motivate the girls have been very recepyou recognize these kids other everyone on the team,” said tive. It gives them something than saying, ‘You did really Meegan. “What happens, is if to shoot for in each game to

improve as an individual and something positive to hang their hats on. “I think it’s huge because with the season we’re having and the injuries piling up. We had to play a man down in our game last week,” Dauria said. “It would be really easy to give up and not try. And the kids just don’t have that in them, which is great.” Other winners include Ryann Merritt, Megan Preisch, Annie Hoodmaker and goalie Sara Ngo, who won her second Player of the Game award for a jaw-dropping 33-save performance in a 1-0 double OT loss to Nichols on Oct. 14. “A couple of the players who got it, maybe they didn’t even think they would play at all this year,” Dauria said. “Then here you are being amid one of the best players of the game. For that kid, that means a lot.”

Tonawanda no trap for Maryvale as Warriors fall to Flyers

By Mike Pidanick SPORTS REPORTER

It seemed like the perfect situation for a trap game for Maryvale. With a showdown against rival Cheektowaga Central looming a week away, the Flyers hosted Class B Central rival Tonawanda, a one-win team that has been competitive in just about every game this

season. But Maryvale was in no mood for a letdown. Instead, the Flyers went out and took care of business, posting a 42-6 win over the Warriors on Friday night. “This was difficult,” Maryvale coach Jeff Buccieri said. “This is Homecoming; there were a lot of distractions. But our guys were hungry from the get-go.” Six different Flyers scored touchdowns as Maryvale moved to 5-1 overall, 3-1 in Class B Central. The Flyers can grab a share of the division title next Friday as

they visit first-place Cheektowaga in what promises to be one of the biggest games in the history of the Maroon Madness rivalry. But that’s next week and for that game to matter, the Flyers had to win in Week 6 first. “We take all the teams the same way,” said senior running back and linebacker Brandon Bojanowski, who had a game-high 113 yards on just seven carries. “We just go out in practice and work as hard as possible and take it week-by-week.” Behind a dominant performance on the line, the

Flyers collected more than 400 total yards of offense, more than 300 of which came on the ground. In all, four Flyers collected more than 50 yards rushing on the evening. Meanwhile, Tonawanda (1-5 overall, 0-4 in the division) again proved it will not back down from a tough opponent. The Warriors forced five Maryvale fumbles, recovering two of them and played the Flyers even for most of the first half until a size disadvantage up front proved to be too much to overcome. “We had the chance to

make some plays,” Tonawanda coach Rob Gross said. “We got the ball on the ground, we had some receivers open, but we just didn’t connect. We did a nice job but I think their line controlled the second half.” Bojanowski had the highlight run of the day, a 74-yard spring down the left sideline in the third quarter, and also added an interception on defense and three extra points. Halferty added 63 receiving yards for a total of 122 yards from scrimmage on the day. Fullback Kwaime Davis had 91 yards and a touchdown,

Marcus Ford had another 55 yards and a TD and Austin Reamsnyder scored on his only carry of the day from 18 yards away. Eric Graham ran for 22 yards and threw for 71 more, including a nineyard TD to Drew Crombie. Demonte Chatmon had a pair of sacks on defense. Ethan Shattuck ran for 27 yards and Austin Henderson contributed 26 more for the Warriors, while Brandon Frye added five receptions for 44 yards from quarterback Tristan Boling, who scored Tonawanda’s touchdown on a 1-yard first quarter run.

The Barking Lounge offers the first overnight dog care of its kind in WNY By Mary Mazur

NT SUN CORRESPONDENT

All dog owners have been through it, the daunting dilemma of what to do with your dog when you have to travel. Airfare for dogs is expensive and finding someone to watch them can be challenging, because dogs unlike other household pets are very high maintenance. David and Brendalee Vanini have opened up a new business in Tonawanda that could

be the solution to your problem if you are thinking about taking a trip. The Barking Lounge is the only day and overnight care facility of its kind in the Western New York area. “My wife and I are big dog fans and this is something we have been wanting to do a long time. Our dog passed away a couple of years ago and we have been talking about this for 10 years and finally we said enough is enough

lets do this,” said David Vanini. The Vanini’s are the owners of several dogs. One of who, named Jacques, slightly resembles Todo from the Wizard of Oz was rescued from an Amish puppy mill where he was abused. Jacques is just starting to come out of his shell; he is still very shy to humans. The Barking Lounge offers a spacious safe place for dogs to stay when their owners are away whether

it is just for the day or it is overnight. The playgroup style care allows dogs that are social to play both in and outdoors with other dogs while their owner is away. The dog groups are arranged according to the age, size and temperament of the dog. For extended stay canines, the unique overnight service provides for one employee to be on site 24 hours a day 7 days a week. No dogs are left alone. Dogs have the option of a private suite where they have their own room overnight or a shared room where dogs in the same household can stay together overnight.

“All the food we have is healthy, organic and natural, no additives, no fillers, no wheat, no corn, no soy. All real meat and all real vegetables … Everything we do is about the pets…All the room colors are muted colors, which is better for dogs… Dogs have access in and outdoors…(outside) it’s soft stone, it’s all round pea gravel so it does not cut them … Everything was designed with dogs in mind,” said Vanini as he toured his facility. Group obedience classes are also on site for dogs that could learn a thing or two. Natalie the Barking Lounge’s trainer, who

received her BA in behavioral psychology with concentration in comparative animal behavior, learning theory and behavior modification, has more than ten years of dog training experience. Classes are held on Wednesday night and on Saturday afternoons. The Barking Lounge is located at 2200 Military Road, Tonawanda, right off the I-290 Elmwood/ Delaware exit. It opens early at 630 a.m. and closes at 7 p.m. It offers discounts to first responders and military members and all customers’ first visits are free. For more information, call 807-0003.

John Leguizamo premieres new show in Buffalo

By: Lauren Kirchmyer

John Leguizamo’s work has appeared various times across stage and screen. His roles have landed him Emmy and ALMA Awards, and nominations for Golden Globes and Tony Awards to name a few. His oneman shows have gone from Broadway stages to HBO specials. His voice has been heard by billions of people around the world in the “Ice Age” franchise, he has appeared in numerous television shows and feature films, and he still has time for his wife and children. Though next week hee will be back in a recordding studio, working onn the fifth “Ice Age” film, m, Leguizamo has put timee aside to come to Buffaloo this weekend to perform m four shows for local fans ns at Helium Comedy Club. “People will be entertained, and they’re going to learn something,” Leguizamo said. “My stuff is always pretty out there and daring if I do say so myself.” Those who attend his performances are in for a treat as Leguizamo is premiering his brand new show. “Buffalo is the first place I’m trying it out at,” he said. “I’m curious to see how people relate to the subject matter – the jokes, inappropriateness and intellectual aspect of it.” Performances begin at 7:30 and 10:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17 and Saturday, Oct. 18 at Helium Comedy Club, located at 30 Mississippi St. in Buffalo.

Leguizamo guizam lloves performing for live audiences because of the immediate feedback he receives. “When a union happens between me and the audience, all of a sudden the show goes places I never thought it would go. They inspire me,” he said. “This is the rawest and most organic dialogue I have. I love the possibility that anything can occur.” Besides acting, Leguizamo is an avid writer. He released an autobiography in 2006 through Harper Collins and created multiple awardwinning one-man shows, performed in Chicago and both on- and off-Broadway in New York City. “There is always something burning in me, a passionate

question or a quest, something I couldn’t deal with and needed to learn how to deal with,” he explained. He truly felt like a “legit writer” however when his show “Spic-O-Rama” won a playwriting award through Warner Hall. Leguizamo performed his one-man show “Ghetto Klown” on Broadway in 2011, and it is now available on HBO on Demand. Through this show, he learned to forgive, let go and move on. He recently revisited this show and plans to release a graphic novel of “Ghetto Klown” next year through Abrams Books. “The artist I got for the novel captures the reality of the story and then elevates it further,” Leguizamo said.

“It takes you other places. It travels through 40 years of my life, different countries and cities and time zones and cultures. Now it’s all visualized.” Leguizamo has learned many times in his career if you don’t accept defeat and keep your eyes on the prize, you will find success. He didn’t expect his show “Freak” to go to Broadway, and then it received an Emmy award and several other nominations. Fox didn’t imagine “Ice Age” to be a box-office sensation, now no there are toys, video games and multiple movga ies i for the franchise. ie “It “I was magic to do. We “I had ha so much fun,” he said about the first “Ice Age” ab film. “The movie came out and saved Fox for the fourth quarter of the year financially. It was a crazy surprise.” Besides being excited to play the lovable sloth “Sid” and start on his next film, Leguizamo is anxious for the upcoming Nov. 7 release of a film he wrote titled “Fugly.” The film – about a guy who grows up ugly, improves himself in college, attempts to be the “Don Juan” character but always finds himself fallings in love – will be available on iTunes and Video On Demand. To keep up with Leguizamo and his momentous career, follow him on Twitter (@ JohnLeguizamo). To learn more about his show taking place this weekend, visit www.heliumcomedy.com/ buffalo.
