Farmer’s Market is a year-round destination By Joanne DalPorto

NT SUN CORRESPONDENT

The thermometer only read 18 degrees, but the welcome was toasty warm at the North Tonawanda Farmer’s Market. All winter long, on Saturday’s, a handful of hardy farmers and vendors offer their goods for sale to those willing to show up, and show up they do. “We have wonderful, faithful customers,” said Tina of Tina’s Cheese. “People depend on us and the quality of what we sell. I had a lady today that was going out of town and was so excited to get her grated cheese and pepperoni.” Dan Hanzilian of Hanzilian’s Homemade Sausage agreed. “There are all sorts of people who shop here, and they are all dedicated,” Hanzilian said. “I love this community. We provide good food for good people.” When the thermometer dips into the teens with wind chills below zero, only the most robust customers make the trek. “I try to come every Saturday no matter the weather,” said Luke Dabill, one of the market’s regulars. “We live in a winter town; why not embrace it?” “There is hot soup most Saturdays,” Dabill continued. “I’m supporting local farmers and locally grown produce, and it feels like

A frosty Saturday morning at the Farmer’s Market in North Tonawanda. Photos by Joanne DalPorto. home. There’s not a friendlier place on earth.” Just when you think your fingers will never regain feeling, you can step into Dan Ottaviano’s heated produce trailer. Dan’s Produce has been in business for 15 years. “This is our second year with the heated option,” Ottaviano explains. “We use it if it’s below freezing outside in order to keep the

customers comfortable and the produce in good condition.” “Our customers are loyal, and they know we are always here for them,” Ottaviano added. In fact, he cares so much about his patrons he hired one. “I was such a good customer for so many years, I ended up working here,” Alyssa, of Dan’s Produce said.

The official hours are 7:30 a.m. until 1 p.m., but you may not want to wait until the last minute on very cold days. Vendors are here year round on Saturdays, and in the spring, summer, and fall on Tuesdays and Thursdays as well. “We’re like a family,” Tina stated. “We’ve worked side by side for many years. My mother started this and I have been involved since

I was 7 years old. I guess it’s in my blood.” Located at the corner of Payne Avenue and Robinson Street, the market has been operating since 1908. In the warmer months, there are dozens of vendors selling a wide array of products from fresh fruits and vegetables to plants, flowers, honey, organic beef, baked goods (for humans as well as their canine

companions), fresh donuts, coffee, and almost anything else you can imagine. The North Tonawanda Farmer’s Market is a wonderful destination regardless of the weather, but there is something extra special about a visit on a cold winter day that only the toughest Western New Yorker’s can appreciate.

Santiago removes one of her many hats, steps down as executive director By Kaitlin Urban

NT SUN CORRESPONDENT

Joyce Santiago is a woman who wears many hats in her community. She’s a mother you may see at your child’s PTA meeting. She’s a board of director for the Twin City Community Outreach and wears the hat as the current president of the Exchange Club of the Tonawanda’s. But, she has decided it’s time to take off the hat she’s been wearing for seven years as the Chamber of Commerce of the Tonawanda’s Executive Director. “I set out to do what I wanted to do by implementing certain programs in the chamber, not only to help give more to our members but to have added value for the community, said San-

tiago. Her last day as executive director will be Feb. 28. While she’ll miss holding this position, she plans to use her extra time serving her community in other ways. “I’ve always been involved in the community, she said. “I still plan on seeing a lot of the people and I hope to have some roll in the community that helps with the growth and development of the community. I’m still hoping to be involved in some way, even if it’s not with the chamber. The North Tonawanda resident started in the chamber as a volunteer. She then worked her way up and “probably sat in every seat there. So when the position for executive director became available, she felt comfortable with her experience in the chamber to finally wear that hat.

“I wanted to try to make things better and set a good example for our kids, Santiago said while explaining why she first got involved in the chamber. “I hope that people see the value in their local chamber of commerce, she added. “I certainly still do. I believe in what it stands for and its success in the past and I see what can be accomplished in the future. But she added at this can’t all be done without support. As she steps down as executive director, Santiago hopes to see the continued support of the community for the chamber. She believes it serves a great purpose to the community and said it’s because of the support from the residents and businesses that this chamber has had so many accomplishments.

Local sports Ken-West wins first NFL title

Jones wins state title

By Dave Ricci

SPORTS CORRESPONDENT

By Dave Ricci

SPORTS CORRESPONDENT

The only thing better than making history is making it on your home court. Samantha Britton had 23 points and Katie Proy added another 15 as the No. 7 ranked large school Lady Blue Devils defeated Lockport 48-35 on Feb.16. The win moved Kenmore West to 12-1 in league play and clinched at least a share of the Niagara Frontier League title. The first league title in the history of Lady Blue Devils basketball. “It’s just amazing. It’s the best feeling ever,” said senior point guard Destiny Catania. “I’m just so proud of everyone.” A combination of a Ken-West win over LewistonPorter on Feb.18 or a Lockport loss to Ken-East on Feb.17 would give Ken-West the title outright. “We work hard every single day and it pays off,” said Proy, a senior. The Lady Lions, led by Gretta Dry’s 17 points, came in looking to avenge and early season loss to the Blue Devils as they held a 10-9 lead after the first quarter. While Lockport held the lead early into the second quarter, the Blue Devils slowly chipped away at that lead until back-to-back buckets by Proy gave Ken-West a 24-20 lead at halftime. It was a lead they would not relinquish as they outscored the Lions 17-3 during a dominating third quarter.

FILE PHOTO

A combination of a Ken-West win over Lewiston-Porter on Feb.18 or a Lockport loss to Ken-East on Feb.17 would give Ken-West the title. “We just pushed ourselves as hard as we could,” said Catania. “We knew that we could come back and we did it.” Lady Blue Devils coach Jeff Martin, who worked sideby-side with former long-time coach Mike Licata for 28 years, said the third quarter was not only key. It was an example of how much his girls wanted this win and how hard they were willing to work to make it happen.

“We work so hard in practice,” said Martin, “and the conditioning level of this team is the best I’ve seen. It really helped us in the third quarter when we started to pull away.” Ken-West’s in your face defense kept the Lions off balance throughout the second half as a two-pointer from Grace Ferguson extended the lead to 48-28 midway through the fourth. Dry had eight points in the fourth, but by the time those shots

dropped the die had been cast and Ken-West had the game in hand. Not only in pursuit of the program’s first NFL title, the Lady Blue Devils were inspired by the emotion of seeing Licata getting his name put up on the Lady Blue Devils Wall of Fame prior to the start of the second half. “It’s amazing,” said Catania. “It’s such a good feeling for us and probably for him.”

Another Catholic state title is certainly nice. But anyone who knows Richie Jones knows full well that he has one more goal in mind; one more dragon to slay. Jones, a St. Joe’s senior, defeated Alex Melikian of Kennedy Catholic by a major decision of 11-3 to claim the 182-pound title at the CHSAAChampionships that were held at Monsignor Farrell on Staten Island on Feb.13-14. It was the lone state title and highlight of the weekend for the Marauders, who scored 149.5 team points to finish sixth in the 20-team tournament. “I’m pleased,” said St.Joe’s coach Peter Kennedy. “We put 10 guys into the quarterfinals, then put seven into the semis, and after the semis only pushed two into the finals. I thought we had a pretty good chance to put five into the finals. We lost some close matches.” REPEAT For Jones, repeating as a Catholic champion was a bit of de javu as he defeated Melikian last year to become state champion. While holding a victory over Melikian did give Jones a slight mental edge, Jones said he didn’t take Melikian for granted in any way, shape or form. He knew Melikian would come at him even harder this time around. “I knew he got a whole lot

better, so I knew it was going to be a real tough match no matter which way I looked at it,” Jones said by phone from the team bus as they were on their way back to WNY. “I tried not to think about last year. I know when I lose to somebody that puts a target on their back and when someone losses to me that puts a target on my back.” The next step for Jones, the alltime wins leader in Marauders history, is the federation tournament that will take place at the Times-Union Center inAlbany. But while most kids in Jones’ position would be obsessed with it being my last kick at the can, Jones is maintaining a level headed; giving it a just go to work every day approach. “I’m not a very long term kind of thinker,” he said. “I just like to take it one match at a time.” “He’s doing the little things,” Kennedy said of Jones commitment to winning. “He’s living the right lifestyle, he’s putting in the extra time. He’s running extra sprints on his own.” Overall the Marauders made a good accounting of themselves as senior Derek Penman finished in second place at 152 pounds. Dominic Caruso (120), Garrett Baugher (138) and Eessa Abdur-Rahman (160) all took third place in their brackets. Chris Werts also placed sixth at 99 pounds. Always tough to say goodbye to seniors, Kennedy said while he hopes for the best for Jones, it’s hard to see Penman and Caruso’s careers come to an end. Both models for the kind of hard working, unselfish student-athlete every coach wishes they could have, Penman exits St. Joe’s with 117 career wins, while Caruso, who had the most falls (four) in the least amount of time (8:36) at Catholic states, had 111 career wins. “Penman had a nice career,” said Kennedy. “He leaves as one of the most decorated guys … same with Caruso.”

Local sports Mike Licata is honored on Kenmore West’s Wall of Fame on Feb. 16

By Dave Ricci

SPORTS CORRESPONDENT

Mike Licata joked that he had finally “graduated.” Licata, who spent 28 seasons as head coach of the Kenmore West Lady Blue Devils basketball program, had his legacy cemented when he was officially welcomed onto the Wall of Fame inside the team room on Feb.16. The ceremony, fittingly enough, took place on a night when the Lady Blue Devils scored a 48-35 win over Lockport to secure at least a share of the Niagara Frontier League

title; the first NFL title in the history of the program. Current head coach, and Licata’s coaching partner for 28 seasons, Jeff Martin officially welcomed Licata onto the Wall of Fame in a ceremony that was attended by former players, friends, family members and the current lineup. “You deserve it and you earned,” said Martin. “Fantastic job, buddy.” Licata is the first nonplayer and the 10th person to be enshrined on the Lady Blue Devils Wall of Fame. “For the first time in my life I’m a former Lady Blue Devil,” Licata said. “For nine years when I gave an opening speech I always felt lucky because when this night was over a lot of people would talk to you about how

special it is-I never graduated. I always knew one thing was for sure, seniors would leave and we (coaches) would always come back. Well I finally graduated. “It took me 28 years to graduate from Kenmore West,” he added, “and now I can really speak truthfully about what these nine (inductees) have said when they stood here. And what they said was that long after you leave, these numbers and the wins and the losses, they were great but that’s not what you remember. What you remember is the friendships and relationships and the feelings that you have playing basketball at Kenmore West.” Collecting 332 wins during his career, Licata’s Blue Devils won the Section VI

Class AA title in 2002-03. Under Licata’s watch the Blue Devils finished in the top three 12 times and above the .500 mark 22 of those 28 years. Licata and Martin also coached 19 sets of sisters and three different mother/ daughter combinations during their time together. “It’s awesome,” said Karen Phillips-Proy, whose daughter Katie is a senior on the Blue Devils. “They changed your life. They made you think about everything, they made you fight for everything you got. They made you a better person for knowing them and playing for them. I couldn’t ask for better coaches for my daughter.” That, at its essence, is what Lady Blue Devils basketball was, is and always will be

about for some. The fact that about two dozen players spanning all 28 of Licata’s coaching years showed up, with some players coming in from out of state, is evidence of the positive impact he made on their lives. Darcy Wood and Lacie Wood-Ackles came in from North Carolina for the ceremony. While other Wall members like Michelle McGuire-McCarthy and West assistant coach Lisa Paolucci were also on hand. With his his wife Arlene and sons Michael Jr., and Nicky looking on, Licata talked about his daughter Lauren, a former player of his from 2003-06, recently getting engaged. How, as a father, it can be tough to give your daughter away, but it’s easier when you know

“For the first time in my life I’m a former Lady Blue Devil,” Licata said.

Dayna Daugherty TONAWANDA

Daugherty carries a solid 96 academic average and is a vital member of the Lady Warriors bowling team. On the lanes, Dayna recorded the highest season average, 192, in ECIC North Small Division to help the Lady Warriors earn a share of the league title. Seemingly never rattled when she is on the lanes, Daugherty is the perfect role model for her teammates. In school, Dayna is involved with the THS Youth Court, Future Business Leaders of America, the Gay-Straight Alliance and the Girl Scouts. She is also part of the Lady Warriors soccer program.

Mike Licata (left) and West coach Jeff Martin (right). you’ve giving her to the right man. Licata equated that to turning the program and his basketball daughters over to Jeff Martin. “I couldn’t have handed them over to a better guy,” Licata said before embracing Martin.
