Two early childhood exhibits to open at museum of science Two special early childhood exhibits, Curious George: Let’s Get Curious! and Science + You will both pay a visit to the Buffalo Museum of Science (BMS) February 7 through May 10, 2015. Presented locally by GEICO with education support from Doodle Bugs Children Centers, both exhibits are included with general museum admission and free for BMS Members and children under two. Curious George: Let’s Get Curious The insatiable curiosity of Curious George – the little monkey who has captured the imagination and hearts of millions of children and adults for almost 75 years – comes to life in Curious George: Let’s Get Curious! Sponsored nationally by 3M, the adorable exhibit introduces young children to Curious George’s world and leads visitors on a fun, meaningful interactive math, science and engineeringbased adventure. Based on the familiar characters in H.A. and Margret Rey’s classic stories published by Houghton Mifflin, the Curious George exhibit inspires young children’s natural curiosity as they explore early science, math and engineering through hands-on interactive play. The immersive exhibit environment takes place in the neighborhood where Curious George lives with his friend, The Man with the Yellow Hat. Visitors will recognize familiar characters and places featured in the classic stories and the new

television series produced by Imagine Entertainment, WGBH Boston and Universal Studios Family Productions on PBS KIDS. The exhibit’s content is based on educational standards developed by Minnesota Children’s Museum and an expert advisory panel to the PBS KIDS series, as well as national science and math standards for young children. Designed, developed and built by Minnesota Children’s Museum in partnership with Universal Studios Consumer Products Group, Curious George: Let’s Get Curious! began touring in September 2007. Inside the Exhibit Apartment Building Operate wheels to move George on pulleys from window to window. Climb the fire escape and climb inside to play with color, light and shadow. Sidewalk Produce Stand Play customer or salesperson and explore shape, sorting, weighing and counting with fruit and vegetables. Construction Site Climb into the construction trailer and design a building, then make use of a bounty of building materials and get to work constructing different structures and using machines to move materials. City Park Enjoy the urban green space: rest or give a hug to a full-size George and take a picture! Our youngest visitors will enjoy our busy wall activities for babies and toddlers.

George when you visit the Museum within the Museum. Follow H.A. and Margaret Rey’s work, the escape from France to safety during World War II that saved the Curious George manuscript, and Curious George throughout the years. Science + You Sponsored by the AbbVie Foundation, the Science + You exhibit offers a child-sized laboratory where children can explore how scientists impact health and wellness. Through hands-on, interactive machinery, processes and technology, Science + You demonstrates the role science plays in keeping the body healthy. A demonstration area of the exhibit also will allow visiting scientists and educators to perform fun and interactive scientific experiments appropriate for young children. The exhibit was created by Kohl Children’s Museum of Greater Chicago, located in Glenview, Illinois. Since its debut there in 2011, the exhibit has traveled to museums in Washington, D.C. and San Francisco, as well as internationally to Germany and Brazil. “The Science + You exhibit is designed after research labs at AbbVie,” said Stephanie Bynum, vice president of programs at Kohl Children’s Museum. “We consulted with their scientists to find effective ways to communicate scientific discovery.” “We are thrilled to be a part of this unique and exciting exhibit that allows children to become young scientists,” said Tracie Haas, divisional

vice president for corporate responsibility at AbbVie. “Using the hands-on tools, machines and processes in the exhibit will give them a better understanding of how scientists work, which will hopefully inspire an interest in science and the pursuit of future science careers.” Entering the Exhibit Children will enter the exhibit as if entering a reallife laboratory. At the first station they can pretend to wash their hands, wipe their feet and shower before they put on their white lab coat and learn how important it is for scientists to work in a clean environment. Antibodies Demonstrating how antibodies act in the body, this component of the exhibit offers children the opportunity to understand a complex process through play by transferring germs (magnetic balls) from the body to a “white blood cell” tube using a moveable antibody. Glove Box Children can use a glovebox, a sealed container used by real-life scientists, with gloves built into the sides allowing one to manipulate objects safely. Demonstrating how scientists use a glovebox to contain materials as well as protect themselves, the children will wear thick gloves to measure substances using beakers, funnels and other lab equipment. Some exhibits to focus on health, nutrition Crossword Answer Museum - From Front Exploring how scientists use machines to mix liquids and solids, this component of the exhibit demonstrates how different types of equipment function. Children can see the machines in action and can also manually mix and separate liquids and solids themselves. Magnification Area This exhibit features a specialized Wentzscope and video microscopes that magnify objects on a large video screen, allowing younger children to compare and contrast an array of natural and man-made items

up close. Healthy Lifestyle Science has shown us that we need a balanced lifestyle to stay healthy. This exhibit component emphasizes the importance of nutrition, exercise and rest with an interactive activity. The exhibit features an outline of a human body with a hollow center. Children place puzzle pieces representing various forms of nutrition, exercise and rest into a hollow outlined body. When a healthy balance of all the components is achieved, children hear a congratulatory message. Test Kitchen In the test kitchen children

are challenged to make a ‘healthy soup’ choosing their own combination of appropriate ingredients. Teaching children the importance of a balanced diet, this exhibit has stations with soup pots that can hold up to six ingredients. Children pick the ingredients from the five food groups. The burner under their soup pot lights up when they’ve selected the correct balance of healthy ingredients. Empowering parents to manage their kids’ wireless use ( N A P S I ) — To d a y ’s tech-savvy generation quickly adapts and enjoys using mobile devices such as cell phones, smartphones and tablets to communicate, learn and play, anytime and anywhere. To help parents manage their kids’ usage and encourage responsible behavior, CTIA—The Wireless Association, which represents the wireless industry, developed GrowingWireless.com, a website developed by parents in the wireless industry for parents who need easy-tounderstand information and resources. Updated regularly, the website offers examples of situations and how parents may want to respond; for example, what parents can do if their child is being bullied, how to protect their privacy and how to manage their kids’ monthly usage so they don’t go over the allotted monthly limits in the Dollars and

Sense section. Visitors to the website will also see information on how to identify and prevent sexting and how to protect kids’ personal information in the Privacy and Security section. GrowingWireless.com also offers a parent’s “tool kit” with a list of parental control tools that are offered by wireless carriers and manufacturers. Parental control tools help parents manage and monitor their kids’ wireless usage. The website also provides information about federal and state laws that help protect kids when they use mobile products and services. Setting family rules is one of the most important and effective steps that parents can take to help kids be responsible wireless users. GrowingWireless.com offers a sample template to help families make their own decisions about what is acceptable

wireless behavior for their kids, and the consequences if those rules are broken. Once agreed upon, these rules should be posted in a central location, such as the refrigerator, and periodically revisited as kids age and technology evolves. What is appropriate for a 12-year-old may be different than the rules for a 13-year-old. By empowering parents with accessible information, they will be able to proactively educate themselves and their kids to solve problems before they arise.

By teaching kids about wireless common sense and responsible use today, they will be better prepared to harness wireless increasingly for education and will be better equipped for jobs in other sectors such as utilities, health care, government services and public safety. READ & SUBMIT

Expert advice on enticing kids to eat their fruits and vegetables (NAPSI)—As many parents know, kids can be picky eaters. And according to a recent study, moms are concerned that their kids aren’t eating enough fruits and vegetables. “We found that moms understand the health benefits of fruits and vegetables but struggle to get their family to eat them,” said Elizabeth Pivonka, Ph.D., RD, president and CEO, Produce for Better Health Foundation. “Today, Americans are currently eating less than half of the recommended cups of fruits and vegetables each day.” To better understand the situation, the Produce for Better Health Foundation conducted its annual research on “Moms’ Attitudes and Beliefs Related to Fruit & Vegetable Consumption.” The study found: • Ninety percent agree that a diet that includes fruits and vegetables may help their child avoid obesity. • Ninety percent agree that a diet with more fruits and vegetables promotes their family’s overall health and may prevent disease, now and in the future. • Ninety percent agree that a diet that includes fruits and vegetables may help promote well-being of mind and body. • Eighty-nine percent agree that more fruits and vegetables plus more physical activity means the family can be at its best. There’s been a steady improvement over time in the level of ease moms reported regarding their ability to access fruits and veg-

etables for their families at restaurants and quick-service restaurants. Setting out a fruit bowl, having vegetables cut up and ready to eat in the refrigerator, and finding ways to hide produce in other foods are some of the ways to get more fruits and vegetables into a family’s diet. The research also found that kids tend to eat more produce when they are involved in the growing, selecting and preparing of food. To get kids more involved, Pivonka provided these tips: 1. Let kids get involved in planning meals for the week and challenge them to find ways to make sure a fruit and vegetable are included in each meal. Remember, canned, frozen and dried fruits or vegetables, in addition to fresh, are all great options! 2. Get kids involved in using produce to make juices or smoothies. It can be a fun activity for kids to use a blender or juicer to show them there are other ways to eat your fruits and vegetables. 3. Teach kids about produce that’s in season and how to select the best produce. Take them to a farmer’s market to talk with growers. This also provides a great opportunity to try new produce they didn’t know they enjoyed. 4. Starting a backyard garden can be a great way to get kids interested and involved. Monsanto, through its Seminis Home Garden division, is working to make growing backyard produce more accessible for busy families by creating seed varieties that are easy to grow.

Local sports South skipper optimistic after Billies’ first loss of season

By Melissa Brawdy SPORTS REPORTER

Losing is never fun, but Williamsville South was handed just its first loss of the season on Saturday (Jan. 3) in a 61-50 defeat to Aquinas at a tournament hosted by South. Still, coach Gabe Michael was optimistic about his team and the way the Billies played. “We didn’t execute as well as we’d like to execute, but there were a lot of positives, not negatives,” Michael said. “Your first loss is going to come eventually.” Rebounds, injuries and foul trouble were South’s u n d o i n g o n S a t u r d a y. Aquinas is a strong team as it is, and the Billies fell just short of doing enough to win. Michael was still impressed with his team’s competitiveness. “That’s probably the best team we’ll play all year, so we hung with them,” Michael said. “We had our

chances to win, and you take some positives out of that, but you’d love to finish the game. We got out rebounded by 10, which is not great for us, and I think that really contributed to us losing the game.” Kam Varner, one of the team’s starting forwards, only played four minutes due to injury. Greg Dolan, the starting point guard, had his minutes limited by foul trouble. But Michael still liked the way he played when he was in. “Greg Dolan did a really nice job,” Michael said. “When he was in there, he was beating their pressure, getting some really great shots, and he did a really nice job as well.” Other key players included Sam Castronova, who had 21 points, one assist, and seven rebounds, and Matt Foster, who had 11 points and seven rebounds. “Sam Castronova played great for us,” Michael said of the senior, who led the Billies with 117 points through seven games at press time. “He had to play more point guard than he normally does because our starting point guard was in foul trouble all game, and he handled that very well.”

Above anything else, Michael wanted to focus on the positives from Saturday’s game. He saw the things that his team struggled with and how some of it was out of the Billies’ control. He also saw how they stepped up and did their best in spite of the circumstances. “We didn’t get enough rebounds, and that was tough for us to overcome,” Michael said. “They’re a strong, physical team. But I thought a lot of guys stepped in, played good minutes, and as a team I thought we handled the pressure very well.” The biggest disappointment was the fact that S o u t h h a s n ’t w o n t h e tournament, which it hosts annually, in three years. “We haven’t won that tournament in three years so it’d be nice to win it,” Michael said. “But at the same time, we watched the film and we’ll improve from there.” Saturday’s loss dropped South’s overall record this season to 6-1. The team improved to 7-1 with a win over Iroquois on Jan. 6 and was scheduled to play Williamsville East on Jan. 8 and Sweet Home on Jan. 13.

scored the game’s lone goal, assisted by Evan Becigneul and Marchant. The one-goal game got even tighter toward the end of the third period as Clarence defensemen took two penalties in

Local sports Amherst girls basketball remains UB grad Knox unbeaten with blowout win over Maryvale signs with the

By Melissa Brawdy SPORTS REPORTER

The Amherst girls basketball team continued its undefeated season with a win over Maryvale Tuesday night (Jan. 6). The game was mostly a comfortable one for the Lady Tigers, ending in a 60-31 win. Amherst took an early lead, scoring 22 unanswered points to start the game. Maryvale finally broke the shutout near the end of the first quarter, and the Lady Tigers took a 22-2 lead into the second quarter. The second quarter wasn’t

as dominant for Amherst. Maryvale came out strong this time and cut Amherst’s lead to 22-10 before the Lady Tigers scored another point. Amherst coach Mike Chatelle liked the strong start his Lady Tigers had, and though they had a weaker second quarter both offensively and defensively, a good team talk at halftime set the girls straight. “It was important for us to get off to a good start,” Chatelle said. “We got off to a good start, I think we got off to a 22-0 run, and then we got kind of stagnant. At halftime we talked about coming and really playing hard and finishing strong and finishing them off if we had the chance to. Luckily we did.” The Lady Tigers took a

27-11 lead into halftime. By the end of the third quarter, they’d stretched the advantage to 49-21. And in the fourth quarter, they did indeed finish off Maryvale with 11 more points for the final score of 60-31. Chatelle saw a few improvements in his team’s play that helped them in the second half. “We started to create some baskets,” he said. “We got some in transition. We took the ball to the basket more.” Holly Sullivan came into the game second on the team in points with 77 and added 15 more to her total. Nine of those points came in the first quarter as part of Amherst’s 22-0 start. “Holly came out shooting well,” Chatelle said. Claire Wanzer had 20

points in Tuesday’s game. She leads the Lady Tigers with 98 points on the season as of Tuesday. “I think that we played well,” Wanzer said after the game. “I think that we played better in the second half than the first half. We can always clean things up, and we all have to keep working at it and need to have less turnovers.” Alex Allard had seven points and was also key to the win, which improved Amherst’s record to 5-0 on the season. In the fourth quarter, Chatelle rested his starters, giving Kasia Fisher a chance to contribute a few points as well. Amherst was scheduled to face Cheektowaga Thursday night (Jan. 8) and will take on Springville Jan. 12 at home

The training she works hard at, and 5-foot-8 sophomore is a captain her teammates this year for her on the Amherst Lady Tigers’ success. varsity basketball team, and she “I like my team a lot,” Wandoes her job well. zer said. After Tuesday’s (Jan. 6) Wanzer’s focus is on her

team and its success. The team’s success is far more important than any individual success for her. When asked how she feels about her success so far this season, her thoughts immediately went to the team, which boasts a 5-0 record as of Tuesday. Those wins are of course in large part thanks to Wanzer’s offensive contributions. “I’m really proud of what we can do,” she said, her excitement evident. But she didn’t stop there. “I really want us to do more and go further though and keep working and keep improving.”

Wanzer’s desire to keep improving should set an example for her teammates. Although Tuesday’s win was a solid one, there were spurts of weaker play by most of the team. Wanzer saw that and immediately after the game discussed the improvements that need to be made. Although she was excited about the win, she wasn’t satisfied. “We can always clean things up, and we all have to keep working at it,” Wanzer said. Wanzer has that same outlook for the season as a whole and from year to year.

“Last year we lost in the playoffs, in the semifinals right before the championship game,” she explained. “I would really like us to just keep working and hopefully get back to the semifinals and maybe even the championship.” Of course, doing that will require hard work, along with winning every game possible. “[We need to] keep playing hard and win in our division and get lots of points,” Wanzer said. And Wanzer hopes to continue to contribute to those wins in any way she can. Going into Tuesday’s game, she also led

the team in assists with 12 and steals with 14. But the statistics don’t really matter to Wanzer. She isn’t afraid to let her teammates shine, either, as shown by her assists stat and the fact that in the team’s biggest win of the year, a 67-10 win over Health Science, Wanzer had just 10 points. Holly Sullivan led with 25 points in that game. Wanzer led in assists with five. As far as individual goals go, Wanzer has just one simple goal this season. “Help my team win,”Wanzer said with a smile.

Three financial pitfalls to avoid in 2015

Child Care Resource Network restructures Child Care Resource Network (CCRN) recently restructured its internal systems and personnel to create greater capacity to serve child care providers, families, and employers in Erie County. The agency’s restructuring has resulted in the following staff appointments: Jill Boeck has been named Director of Education and Training, with the agency’s expanded focus on enhanced training, credentialing, and professional development for child care professionals. Boeck, of Hamburg, has been with the organization as Director of Education for seven years and holds a master’s degree in elementary education from SUNY College at Buffalo. Susan DiNatale has been named Director of Community Initiatives and Development. DiNatale was previously Director of Legally Exempt Services at the agency. In her new role, DiNatale will be responsible for grant writing, major gifts, events, and special programs. DiNatale, a Kenmore resident, has a master’s degree in Exceptional Education from the State University of New York (SUNY) College at Buffalo. Renee Gietz is Director of Quality As-

surance and Support Services, responsible for human resources, grant compliance, and operations. Prior to that, she held the position of Director of Operations with the organization. Gietz, a resident of Grand Island, holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and sociology from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo. Amanda Kelkenberg has taken the position of Director of Community Outreach & Assessment and will manage parent and employer services, community research, data management, and communications and outreach. Kelkenberg, of Akron, was formerly Director of Child Care Registration with the organization and holds an MBA from Medaille College and a bachelor degree in early childhood studies from Empire State College. Charles Orlando of Hamburg has been named Director of the Regulatory Services Department, which enrolls and monitors child care providers. Holding a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from SUNY College at Buffalo, Orlando was previously Child Care Registration Supervisor with the agency.

(NAPSI)—It is not surprising that most New Year’s resolutions revolve around health and financial matters, two areas that emerged as key priorities for Americans in Northwestern Mutual’s 2014 Planning and Progress Study. The study underscored the need for better decision making, with 60 percent of Americans stating that their financial planning needs improvement and more than half admitting that they do not feel financially secure. Moreover, with longevity and costs increasing at a steady pace, there is also likely heightened pressure to prepare for the future, especially considering that, per Bankrate research, onethird of American workers have no retirement savings whatsoever. However, as the saying goes, “the best laid plans of mice and men often go astray,” and New Year’s resolutions seem to prove the point. A recent Forbes magazine poll found that only 8 percent of Americans actually succeed in keeping their resolutions. In fact, a different survey showed that more than 10 percent of New Year’s resolutions don’t even make it to the Super Bowl. g in:
