WS Library hosts ‘Chalk the Walk’ event to showcase proposed library expansion By Kimberly Snickles

Reada Book, the library mascot, spends some time with a young library enthusiast at the Chalk the Walk event. board and there were several different libraries applying for a state grant. West Seneca did receive some funds, so that will allow us to start.” The West Seneca Public Library has been around since 1958. The space and technology for what will soon be a 2015 library is heavily outdated. In order to keep up with the changing times, the plan would include an addition to the town municipal building thus creat-

ing a brand new library. The expansion will feature new computers, a private lounge for librarians, and a children’s section. The space would also become a community center that would include a coffee shop, fireplace, and seating for residents. “I think our community deserves something new and fresh,” said Moser. And new and fresh it will certainly be. Moser hopes to see

ground break by next summer and explained that the library will remain open no matter what the construction. “We will brush out the dust and keep moving forward with this exciting plan,” she said. “We are dreaming big.” For more information on the proposed expansion, visit the West Seneca Public Library at 1300 Union Road, West Seneca.

‘A Record of Poetry’ a lifelong dream for local writer By William Homan SUN CORRESPONDENT

Writing has always been a big part of West Seneca resident Terry M. Luke’s life. While growing up in Syracuse, Luke received high marks in all of her English classes and was an active member of her junior high school, serving as the editor for the school newspaper. “I always did really well in school, particularly my English classes,” Luke explained. “It’s just something that came naturally for me.” Following her junior high and high school years, Luke went on to pursue a degree at SUNY Geneseo, Suny Fredonia, and Onondaga Community College. Eventually Luke would wind up in the Buffalo area after meeting and marrying her

It was an eventful weekend for the West Seneca Public Library as residents and officials gathered to learn more about the proposed and very possible library expansion. The Chalk the Walk event, where an outline of the proposed library expansion was “chalked” on the front grass, was held 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 11. Those present for the event included Councilman Eugene Hart, Brian Kulpa, an architect from Clark Patterson and Lee, the West Seneca Library Board of Trustees, Friends of the West Seneca Public Library, and library staff. “It was a beautiful sunny day,” said Emily Moser, librarian. “We marked out the children’s area and programming room and meeting space. The architect was there to answer anyone’s questions that asked about parking and time frame. It’s the first step at seeing what’s to come.” Councilman Eugene Hart spearheaded the initiative of applying for a library construction grant from the state last year and now according to Moser, it looks like the grant is going to be approved. “We are very excited about this,” said Moser. “The proposal was presented to the town board and the central library

husband. Now going on 65 years old, the retired home health aid still spends a large amount of her time writing poetry and in 2010 had her first book published through AuthorHouse Book Publishing Company. “A Record of Poetry,” a collection of over 300 original poems by Maytresa Mein Lukstein- Luke’s pen name, covers a wide variety of poetry styles as well as subject matter. When Luke decided that she wanted to try and get her book published she reached out to AuthorHouse and after exchanging multiple drafts and copies of her work, the final product was produced. For Luke, the excitement was unrivaled.

Usually the month of October reminds people of one thing only, Halloween. However, in West Seneca, in the beautiful month of autumn, there are other fun events happening. A concert is one of those events that can give you a break from all the pumpkin farms and haunted houses. If you love rock music and want to attend an adult night out that is for a good cause then this event is for you. The Kiwanis Club of West Seneca presents the live entertainment of The Strictly Hip at a concert from 7 to 11 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 17 at the Harvey D. Morin Post on 965 Center Road. Jim Bach has been a member of the West Seneca Kiwanis Club for three years now. He enjoys being a part of this organization. The Kiwanis do much to benefit the town, including putting on the annual art show. They also work with youth in providing scholarships every year. A $500 college scholarship is awarded to one top student from West Senior and one to East Senior. The Kiwanis also partner with the Aktion Club in advocating for adults with disabilities. The Aktion Club believes that “development has no disability,” and the Kiwanis family has always worked with them to promote learning and opportunity. There are several youth service programs that are offered through the Kiwanis Club, from Builders Club at the middle school level to Key Club at the high schools. They also sponsor the Winchester Boy Scouts of West Seneca. For this concert, the Kiwanis Club members knew they wanted a good rock group that played to please a large crowd. They have partnered with The Strictly Hip before, in March of this year, to a great turn out, with lots of fun and good rock cover songs.

For Brohdney and Mandie Ricketts, starting a home business was a new adventure they had never been on before, but taking that chance has proven to be the first step in the right direction. The West Seneca couple have opened a home business with a unique product. The name of their company is BBM&T Creations. Their drive to succeed is as strong as their love for each other, and they hope to take their business to the next level as a husband and wife team. They make and sell hand crafted and painted containers that can be used for a wide variety of things. Brohdny Ricketts was raised in Jamaica and grew up all over the United States. He lived for a long time in New Jersey, and joined the armed forces to serve our country. There, he met his wife Mandie, whom was also in the Army. After marrying and starting a family, Brohdny was medically retired from the Army. Mandie is still in the reserves. With this new chapter in life starting for them, the Ricketts wanted to do some work that would be functional but interesting and different. They decided to craft handmade containers that come in a variety of sizes and suit a variety of purposes. They are clay pots, and the shape is almost like a gumball machine. You can store any household items you want in there, and a popular use

SUBMITTED

The Ricketts family believes starting their own home business was a step in the right direction. for them is for holding baked goods. A lot of people who own pets might love these for their dog treats. The containers come in handy for lots of other home purposes as well. Their product comes in four sizes: mini, small, medium and large. If you’re looking for a teacher gift or holiday exchange, this is a one of a kind present no one else will have. Another great use for the mini containers is as a favor for any type of party or event. The Ricketts have sold many of their minis for baby and bridal showers. “We’re doing a baby shower right now featuring the minis. They’re a big hit. They can be personalized and come in

any color requested,” said Brohdny. Their business also sells instant, organic teas, coffee, and hot cocoa. These items are also another storage idea for the hand crafted containers. The Ricketts have traveled to many craft shows and events to promote their product. They have visited local high schools and also sell their products to people living in nursing homes. The couple loves going out into the community and gaining new insight to add ideas for their home business. Their main goal is total customer satisfaction. “We enjoy going out and meeting people the most,” said Brohdny.

The best part of starting a home business, other than working with family, is that the couple has a chance to give back to the community. Their goal is to not only meet the needs and wants of their customers, but also to aid those suffering. Since the Ricketts are both Army veterans, they donate 10 percent of all their sales to the Wounded Warrior Project. Brohdny and Mandie have two young children, and setting a good example for them is important to them as parents. Brohdny and Mandie run a website called bbmtcreations@outlook.com where you can shop their products and order online.

Senator Gallivan urges Cuomo to provide assistance to West Seneca flood victims Senator Patrick M. Gallivan (R-C-I, Elma) is calling on Governor Cuomo to provide disaster aid to residents of the Town of West Seneca impacted by severe flooding this past winter that damaged more than 70 homes and businesses. While the state has provided funding to help the town with costs incurred for storm damage and cleanup, individual residents have not received any financial assistance. “The state has an obligation to assist residents and

Now it’s time to help the residents of West Seneca who suffered tremendous property damage caused by the harsh winter weather,” Gallivan said. disasters. Gallivan’s office is also working with the New York State Home and Community Renewal Agency to secure possible funding. Dozens of homes were damaged over the winter by flooding along Buffalo Creek, with some homeowners reporting several feet of water in their basement. Some cars were also damaged by the flood waters and large chunks of ice. “Many of these residents have nowhere else to turn

as they try to recover from the damage caused by these floods. They need our help,” Gallivan said. In September, the state announced $500,000 in funding to help the Town of West Seneca with costs associated with the flood, but the money did not go to individual families or businesses. The town is also working with the Department of Environmental Conservation to prevent future flooding along Buffalo Creek.

Urging the investigation RENTERS TERS WANTED WAN of UNRWA

Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-26) and Representative Doug Collins (GA-9) led a bipartisan effort in writing to Secretary of State John Kerry regarding the use of United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) facilities to maintain rocket stockpiles during the conflict between Israel and Hamas. In the letter, Higgins and Collins urge the state department to conduct an independent investigation to uncover the extent to which UNRWA facilities are being misused in Gaza. “As a major recipient of U.S. tax dollars, UNRWA must take more robust measures to ensure its facilities are not being used to facilitate terrorism,” Congressman Higgins said. “I urge the state department to take the appropriate and necessary action.” Congressman Collins said, “The resources of the international community, especially those provided by the United States, simply cannot be used in any way to further terrorism. We’re very concerned about these reports and expect a conclusive state department investigation as soon as pos-

sible.” UNRWA provides humanitarian, social services, education and other forms of assistanceto Palestinians in the West Bank, Gaza, Lebanon, Jordan and Syria. However, during the recent conflict in Gaza, in which Hamas and other groups conducted terrorist operations from civilian areas, rockets were discovered at UNRWA schools on three separate occasions, constituting a major violation of international law and raising questions about the measures UNRWA is taking to ensure its facilities are not being used by Hamas or other terrorist groups. The letter, which has 67 signatures, stresses that UNRWA should do more to prevent its facilities from being used to endanger the lives of civilians and commit acts of terrorism. In addition to requesting an investigation, the lawmakers call for more thorough screening of staff for membership in Hamas and Hezbollah and increased inspections of UNRWA facilities to ensure they are being used as intended.

Schedule auto bureau appointments online Erie County Clerk Chris Jacobs announced that the Erie County Auto Bureau is now accepting reservations online in order to improve wait times and make it easier for customers to conduct their business quickly during a time that is convenient for them. Jacobs says the online reservation system is easy to use and the system walks you through the process of scheduling an appointment. “With the auto bureau’s 24/7 online reservation system, motorists can make appointments up to 30 days in advance or even on the same day,” Jacobs stated. The reservation system allows customers to go online and book an appointment for a specific date, time and location. The customer will receive a confirmation email, then a second reminder email one hour prior to their appointment time. Upon arrival, the customer checks in at

the self-serve kiosk station with their confirmation number and will be taken care of at their scheduled appointment time. “We believe this online reservation system will eliminate the trepidation customers have as to the how long they will have to wait at the auto bureaus. They can now go online and reserve a specific appointment time,” said Jacobs, who believes this technology will dramatically improve the customer experience and make the process more predicable for both the customer and the auto bureau staff. Motorists can visit the Erie County Auto Bureau’s website at www.erie.gov/ clerk/autobureau, go to the online reservations page and schedule an appointment at any of the three largest auto bureaus operated by the county clerk’s office - Amherst, Cheektowaga and downtown Buffalo.

Public asked to weigh-in on recommendation to increase elected officials salaries Earlier this year a group of resident volunteers were appointed to the Salary Review Commission to decide if they thought salary increases were warranted for Erie County’s elected officials. Upon conclusion of their review, they have recommended increases for the county executive, sheriff, clerk and comptroller. I have thoroughly reviewed the commission’s report and stand adamantly opposed to the recommended increases. During tough economic times, most workers have gone without pay increases, and many with pay decreases. Therefore, in good

conscience I cannot support raising salaries of elected officials while so many have others have learned to do more with less. I feel that now is not the time to be increasing the salaries of any elected officials and further burdening the taxpayers. Holding public office is an opportunity to give back to your community, not to take from it. I’m grateful every day for the opportunity to represent my community; I hope all other elected officials feel the same. Since the release of the commission’s recommendations I have heard many comments from residents

who have an interest in this issue. I know many of you feel very strongly and the legislature wants to make sure your opinion is heard. There are several opportunities for you to weigh-in on this issue. The legislature will be hosting an online survey at www.erie.gov/legislature, as well as on each of the majority caucus members’ individual pages. My page can be found at www.erie. gov/legislature/district10. Please complete the survey and let the legislature know your thoughts. A public forum will be held at the legislature within the

next coming weeks. When the time and date are set that information will be announced. If you wish to be notified about the forum, please email me at joseph. lorigo@erie.gov to request that information. You can write to the Clerk of the Legislature at 92 Franklin St., Fourth Floor, Buffalo, NY 14202 and request that your comments be included in the official record. The legislature will be voting on the recommendations later this year and while I will not support the proposed increases, I want to ensure that you, the tax-

payers, are involved in this important process. In another matter, I am partnering with local officials to collect new or used Halloween costumes for kids in need this holiday. My law office, 101 Slade Avenue, Unit 2, West Seneca, as well as NYS Assemblyman Councilman Michael P. Kearns’ District Office, 1074 Union Road, West Seneca, are serving as dropoff locations. Please drop off costumes or accessories that you wish to donate during business hours. This is a great community effort to give all kids a fun Halloween experience.

Also, don’t forget that on Tuesday, Oct. 28, I am hosting a flu clinic from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Aurora Town Hall, 300 Gleed Ave., East Aurora, in partnership with Rite-Aid. The clinic is for adults, age 18 and older, and attendees are asked to bring their insurance card. Most insurance plans cover the vaccination in full. WNY girl wishes to meet Gator Boys through Make-A-Wish Western New York

SUBMITTED

Little Caylee’s adventure with the Gator Boys was recently featured on Animal Planet. Imagine a 4-year-old girl wrestling a six-foot alligator - well, a stuffed alligator that is! This was Caylee’s dream-come-true. The young, spunky, red-headed girl had wished to meet the stars from her favorite television show on Animal Planet, the Gator Boys. Her mother Emily says that when Caylee was diagnosed with short bowel syndrome at the age of three, all she ever wanted to do was watch

episodes of the Gator Boys. “It was the only thing that would calm her down,” Emily recalls. Her extremely rare illness, which only affects 10,000 individuals nationwide, leaves her feeling sick nearly every day. Her mom says that thinking about the highly anticipated wish experience lifted her daughter’s spirits. On the big day, Caylee, her younger brother, and mother were picked up by a limou-

sine at their home and taken to the airport, where they jetted off to sunny Florida. After checking into their hotel, the family was greeted by a second stretch limousine that took them to meet the cast. Caylee was off on the adventure and experience of a lifetime! Emily reports, “They acted like they knew each other from day one. As if they had known each other their whole lives.” Emily was

face lit up the entire time. “She even got to name one of the alligators, and called her, Rosebud,” she says. Caylee’s fun and adventure didn’t end on that day. While in Florida, the little girl and her family also enjoyed a dinner cruise through Fort Lauderdale, where they were able to see many different varieties of sea animals and critters. “It was unbelievable,” says Emily. “Honestly, I never thought

once that she was sick while on the wish. Everybody treated her with such compassion, and it was all about Caylee. Just to see her smile, I will never forget that.” The family credits the magic of Make-A-Wish for bringing them closer together, and allowing them to forget about the struggles of Caylee’s illness. “MakeA-Wish gave me peace of mind, and more importantly, hope for the future.”

Now we have an opportunity to help show that we are the ‘City of Good Neighbors.’ It is great to have local leaders from all parties come together for a great cause,” said Mychajliw. Joining the Erie County Comptroller in this “tri-partisan” charitable effort is New York State Senator Timothy M. Kennedy (D), New York State Assemblyman Michael P. Kearns (D), Erie County Legislator Joseph C. Lorigo (C), and Cheektowaga Councilwoman Diane Benczkowski (D). “These children deserve to enjoy Halloween just like everyone else. Any help we

We can all get behind our community’s kids,” said Assemblyman Kearns. “As public servants, we have a unique opportunity to give back to our communities. This campaign for kids is something truly special and I’m honored to be a part of it,” said Legislator Lorigo. “All of us involved were elected to help people. There’s nothing like the feeling you get from lending a hand to young people in need,” said Councilwoman

Benczkowski. “It’s refreshing to be able to put politics aside and join together for such a phenomenal cause. I know the children are extremely grateful to live in such a generous community,” said Legislator Burke. Buffalo native releases children’s book ‘Treasures in the Woods’ For parents wanting to teach their kids about nature in a fun way, this book is just what you need. While many educational books might feel like reading a textbook, “Treasures in the Woods teaches kids using fun rhymes and cool pictures, making learning feel truly fun instead of something they have to do for school. The rhymes give kids a different perspective on seemingly ordinary things, such as flowers, frogs, butterflies, clouds, and deer. Each poem is accompanied by at least one beautiful photograph. Even if your kids are not old enough to read on their own yet, they will love looking at the close-up picture of a bird while you read them the rhyme about the bird. The author of the book, Sandi White, plans on making this book the first of a series. “I’d like to do this kind of book in other settings as well, so for example, things you’ll find at the beach, in the mountains, in the ocean, etc. While some children’s books are intended either for entertainment or for education, Treasures accomplishes both in a fun and natural way. “These poems take ordinary things that kids may see all the time, like dandelions, and show a completely different way

Sandi White and her daughter Rachel celebrate the release of ‘Treasures in the Woods.’ of looking at them, says Sandi. “The poems highlight the magic in everyday things. Her daughter, Rachel, 20, took all of the photographs used in the book and illustrated the front cover. Sandi was born in Buffalo but grew up in Tampa, Florida. She has also lived in Colorado and northern California. Sandi says she came up with the idea for the book while looking at the photos Rachel had taken. “The pictures spurred rhymes in my head, and I wrote them all down. Before I knew it,

I had enough for a children’s book! The book is 25 pages, and also includes 4 bonus blank pages, where kids can write about their experiences in the woods, or draw pictures of something they’ve seen. Parents can also use the blank pages to jot down notes about different woodland areas they can visit nearby, or ideas for forest-related activities to do with their kids. Sandi is already working on her next book, called My Family Tree. “This one is not part of the Treasures series, but instead will tell

the silly story of a young girl’s family tree, and how all of her ancestors helped to make her who she is. Sandi hopes to have My Family Tree finished before Christmas. “I’ve got an awesome illustrator working with me on this one. The stories are hilarious, the illustrations are fantastic. It’s going to be a great book. To find out more about Treasures In The Woods, as well as Sandi’s upcoming books, visit www.SandiWhite.com. Kiwanis to host haunted Luke admits poetic inspiration is everywhere house beginning Oct. 24 Poet from Page 1

“They did a wonderful job, Luke explained. “The cover artwork is beautiful and they even included a great picture of myself right after the table of contents. Having written poetry since junior high school, it isn’t hard to believe that Luke has written well over 1,000 poems. Currently they are stored underneath her typewriter in 11 books. She guesses that most of her poems have a religious theme, but noted that they also cover a number of other subjects.

“My hope is that one day someone comes across the work that I’ve done and takes it upon themselves to have the work published. I think that would be neat. Luke admitted that her inspiration is everywhere. Often times she’ll be inspired while at church on a Sunday morning and return to her house that afternoon to write. Other times she will be walking to or from the store and will be struck with an idea. “I watch CNN and the news and I stay up to date

on the things going on in the world and locally in West Seneca and what I try and do is create something that might help the hearts and minds of those in need, Luke said. “Whether it’s someone going through a difficult time or someone just looking to laugh, I think there’s a poem that can serve that purpose. The book is still available for purchase through online outlets such as Amazon. com, Barnes & Noble’s website, and even through AuthorHouse’s website.
