Attracting eventgoers from the Anderson area and beyond, this three-night weekend tradition blends an exciting festival atmosphere with a familiar hometown appeal. This event mini book is your guide to Anderson Township’s 12th annual community celebration of Greater Anderson Days! Enjoying Our Community
The Greater Anderson Days celebration features free admission, diverse live music from local bands, exciting games, exhilarating rides, and delicious food. The weekend also features the Anderson Area Chamber of Commerce Silent Auction & Dunking Booth, Fireman’s Festival gambling, and – the highlight of the celebration and true grand finale – the exciting fireworks display by Rozzi, courtesy of the Beechmont Automotive Group.
Anderson Days Committee consists of the Anderson Township Park District, Anderson Township Government, Anderson Area Chamber of Commerce and the Anderson Township Fireman’s Association. Primary Event Coordinator Anderson Township Park District This year, the Anderson Township Park District is celebrating its 35th Birthday! Since 1976 the Anderson Township Park District has been providing Anderson Township residents with quality parks, facilities and programs. As the primary event coordinator of Greater Anderson Days, the Anderson Township Park District is excited to once again host the largest community celebration in Anderson Township! The purpose for all the fun is to bring the community together for a great time, and to raise funds for worthy community endeavors including enhancing park playgrounds through the Park District’s General Playground Fund. Park visitors can see the results of the ATPD’s fundraising in action at the All-Children’s Playground at Beech Acres Park. The inclusive playground inspires both active and imaginative play, and has
proven to be a hit with children of all ages and abilities since the playground’s grand opening in 2007! Currently, the Beech Acres Park playground features a tot-lot complete with a train and train station, swings, a sand play area, a minimountain, a playhouse, and an arched bridge. Older children can test their skills on the Sasquatch-tall climbing boulders and a large, fort-like play unit. The walking paths and surfacing tie together the river and village theme which leads to a unique water play area. This playground is truly a place where children with and without disabilities can play together in a healthy recreational environment. The Beech Acres Park playground was made possible as a result of the hard work and the extreme generosity of so many members of our community. In the last six years, Greater Anderson Days
raised $51,753.27 and the Run to Remember raised $31,522 for construction of the playground. The Anderson Township Park District was also fortunate to receive several charitable donations and grants for the completion of the playground: the Marge and Charles J. Schott Foundation contributed $200,000; the H.G., H.F., & L.T. Dornette Foundation, Fifth Third Bank & Stan Koller contributed $100,000; and WLWT- TV Channel 5, Darryl Parks & 700 WLW – The Big One, with Jim Scott leading the charge, organized a fundraiser in the name of Marcus Fiesel, which raised a combined $77,945, including donations from over 1,100 businesses and

Event Partner: Anderson Township Government Over the past few years, Anderson Township residents have enjoyed many new amenities and conveniences provided through the careful planning of Anderson Township’s trustees. One major improvement thoroughly utilized from the onset is beautiful Anderson Center, the township’s multipurpose government, civic and arts facility on Five Mile Road. This public space connects business, government, arts and civic organizations in a “one-stop shopping” option for residents needing government services. It also is a popular gathering space that is helping create a vibrant sense of community in Anderson Township. Organizations housed within the facility (besides Anderson Township government) include the Anderson Area Chamber of Commerce, Summerfair Inc., and
Anderson Community Television. The Anderson Township Historical Society also operates the History Room at the center for public viewing and celebrates our rich history. Open for public rental, Anderson Center includes an attractive 223-seat state-of-theart theater, rooms for confer-
ences and weddings, and other public spaces. Arts organizations such as the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, Beechmont Players, the Forest Aires, Playhouse in the Park and Anderson Community Band all utilize the center. Situated in a park-like setting, Anderson Center is surrounded by wetlands, waterfalls and a landscaped walking trail which connects to the Five Mile Trail. Now three years old, the popular Five Mile Trail’s hilly path traverses woodlands and connects residential areas to the Mercy
Hospital Anderson, the Healthplex, and Anderson Branch Library, along with a link to Anderson’s major shopping artery. While the Five Mile Trail has become one of the most heavily used links in Anderson’s ambitious trails program, the township has received sizeable federal grants that will further increase the township’s hikebike paths, most notably down Asbury Road linking subdivisions to one another and Beechmont Avenue. The township continues to create other significant links between residential areas and amenities to serve the most residents possible. Open for its third season, the Anderson Township Farmers’ Market provides an easy way to shop local in a volunteer-driven effort that is

The Fireman’s Festival: Hot Fun in the Summertime! Families in Anderson Township know there’s one summer weekend they don’t want to miss – the July weekend of the Greater Anderson Days. During its long history, many Anderson residents have made great memories while playing games of chance and enjoying those delicious ears of roasted corn, slathered in butter. There’s something for all ages at the festival. Learn more about fire safety from the Anderson Township Fire and Rescue Department representatives or get introduced to Lt. Big Ben, the towering mascot of the fire department. Children also can sit in the front of a fire engine and check out what firefighters actually wear when they enter a burning building. Want to try your hand at a little blackjack or poker? See if Lady Luck will smile on you.
Many festival-goers won’t leave the event without eating at least one ear at the famous “buck ‘n’ ear” booth, where you can buy a delicious roasted ear of corn to go with your favorite beverage. All this fun is for a good cause. This year, the Fireman’s Association plans to set these

Event Partner: Fireman’s Association Over six decades, the Anderson Township Fireman’s Association has contributed more than a million dollars worth of equipment to the Anderson Township Fire and Rescue Department. Since its inception in 1940, the Association’s goal has been to fund vital medical equipment such as automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and 12-lead Life Pac 15 heart monitors that can send the patient’s heart rhythms directly to the hospital for review. A major source of the funding for this equipment comes from the many generous donors who contribute during the Association’s annual fund drive and through the festival, held in conjunction with
Greater Anderson Days. To raise these funds, the Association operates games of chance and a roasted corn booth at the three-day festival. As always, the Fireman’s Association thanks the community for its generosity and continued support of projects. Come to Beech Acres Park July 23-25 to show your support of the township’s emergency medical services!

Anderson Area Chamber of Commerce silent auction and dunking booth One of the highlight tents at Greater Anderson Days is the Anderson Area Chamber of Commerce Silent Auction booth offering area businesses a great way to advertise and the community a great way to buy. The Chamber’s Silent Auction booth will again have some exciting items. The mix is so diversified there is something for everyone to put in a bid on. In addition to a large variety of gift certificates to many local restaurants, shops and businesses there will also be a large assortment of gift packs and baskets with fabulous “treats,” and tickets to local entertainment and sporting events to bid on. These include Cincinnati Reds, Playhouse in the Park, Cincinnati Zoo and Riverbend. Exciting sports memorabilia from baseballs and footballs to signed art-
work will be at the auction. There is still time to donate to the auction. The deadline is Tuesday July, 20th. By con-
tributing to the silent auction your business or organization has the opportunity to be exposed to thousands of
Greater Cincinnati families over the course of the festival. This is a great way to promote your business as well as provide you with a possible business tax deduction. Make it a point to stop by and checkout the fabulous auction items. Back by popular demand is the Chamber’s Dunking Booth at Greater Anderson Days. Poster contest winner focuses on festival’s greatness By Jill Rooksberry | Contributor Out of the many wonderful entries for the third annual Greater Anderson Days poster design contest, it was Dou Hong's unique design that was declared the winner. Hong is an undergraduate student majoring in transportation design at the College of Design, Art, Architecture, and Planning, at the University of Cincinnati, and hopes to eventually work in animation/illustration or the voice-over industry. Her concept for this year’s poster celebrating Greater Anderson Days was to focus on all the events that make this festival truly great. “Having each letter of Greater Anderson Days represent a different image of what can be found at the celebration is a creative way to connect the viewer to the great time they’ll
have when they go. When people see the poster, they know that it’s not just a festival for locals, but a yearly culmination of fun and activities that anyone can enjoy,” Hong said. The contest was first offered in 2008 as a way to help celebrate the tenth anniversary of Greater

How many Twinkies can you eat in two minutes? By Jill Rooksberry | Contributor How many Twinkies do you think you can eat in a two-minute period of time? That is a question eight hungry participants will be answering when they take part in the third annual Twinkie Eating Contest as a part of Greater Anderson Days July 24th at 7:30 p.m. Scott Lahman is with the Anderson Township Park District and he came up with the idea for the Twinkie eating contest because he thought it would be a fun event and, let’s be honest, who doesn’t love a Twinkie? “Everyone, or at least most everyone, loves Twinkies. It makes you smile just saying the name,” Lahman said. The procedure for the Twinkie Eating Contest is pretty straightforward. The participants are seated at a
table with a plate of eight to 10 Twinkies in front of them and some water. There is a running clock set for two minutes and whoever eats all of the Twinkies on their plate, or the most overall, wins. Gayla Hawks of Anderson
is an alumnus of last year’s Twinkie Eating Contest and has one piece of advice for future participants. “If you really want to win, you need a big cup of water to dip the Twinkies in so they dissolve and you basically
drink them instead of eat them,” said Hawks. “It was a lot of fun last year!” If you think you might have what it takes to triumph over the Twinkies call the Park District events line to sign up at 388-4513.
