Milford Pharmacy & Wellness Center the right fit Like a good shoe, Milford Pharmacy & Wellness Center is the right fit for those who have diabetes. It keeps them safe and “on their toes.” “This goes back to having a wider scope of practice,” said owner and pharmacist Jeff Hill. “We do more than treat injury, but look at one’s total health, offering education on wellness and prevention.” Prevention is key to a long, healthy life, especially for those diagnosed with diabetes. That’s why the Wellness Center offers a full-line of compression hosiery and diabetic socks. Compression hosiery can reduce swelling, prevent blood clots, help with varicose veins, broken veins, and help those who stand for long periods of time. “We have a full-line of knee and thigh-high support stockings,” Jill Schad, RN said. “And we measure you to insure a proper fit. It’s important for those who have swelling to come later in the day, so we can get a better measurement for what they really need.” The Wellness Center also offers several different brands of diabetic footwear. “The goal is to prevent friction, which could cause an ulcer or blister that could lead to an infection, extensive wound healing treatment and even amputation,” explained Schad, who is a certified orthotic fitter. “Properly fitted shoes and inserts can reduce the risk of such scenarios.” This niche started being practiced at the Wellness Center when the Therapeutic Shoe Bill was passed to provide proper footwear for diabetics. Traditional Medicare covers 80 percent of the cost for one pair of shoes and three pairs of heat molded inserts a year. The patient must also have a prescription from a doctor. “This is a great form of outreach and just one example of the type of customer-service we try to provide as a wellness center,” Schad said. “This is something very beneficial to the diabetic population.” When someone comes in for a diabet-

ic shoe, Schad says she spends 30 to 40 minutes providing a full-foot exam and measurements. Then, she special orders the shoe for them. Diabetic footwear has extra depth for protection. They come in a variety of styles from casual, athletics, sandals, leather, boots to dress. “It’s a great way to educate people about the importance of taking care of their feet,” said Schad. “I really enjoy the contact with the people. This allows me to be back in the patient realm. I love working with people and sharing with them how they can keep themselves healthy.” Schad said she also gets to know patients – she learns about their lives and how they care for themselves. “This personalizes things,” she said. “I get to know how they are dealing with their diabetes and can steer them in the right direction to optimal health.” Schad is available to work with you by appointment. Call 831-8211 for more information. Pharmacist Jeff Hill said this is just one of many ways to reach out to people in the community and let them know there is someone out there who cares about their health. “You’re dealing with real people with real needs, real hurts and real fears,” said Hill. “They want someone who cares and understands what they’re going through and who isn’t afraid to listen and answer their questions. That’s us.”

Creating an outdoor living room For leisurely entertaining this summer, take full advantage of the great outdoors and extend your living space by creating an outdoor room. Why not have an outdoor living room with comfortable seating for all or your friends, or a space where you could fire up the grill and dine out under the stars? Adding a level, low maintenance surface, like a patio, will give you not only the pleasure of living in your outdoor space, but of loving it too. A great way to create this space is by installing pavers, bricks, or stone to create beautiful patios and paths. Whether you do it yourself or hire a professional, it can be as easy as installing a winding path to connect your home to your
garden or creating a space for a cozy bench to watch the birds splashing in the bird bath. Pavers come in many different shapes, sizes and colors, offering you ways to customize your ideas to match your house and landscaping. Once you have your patio or walkways installed, you can make your backyard inviting and appealing all summer long. Here are a couple of fun, easy tips: • Find sturdy, comfortable seating that will withstand the elements for years to come. Try wrought iron, wood, or even resin (often made from post-consumer bottle waste such as milk containers) for low-maintenance options. These are readily available in your local garden or specialty stores. Home see page 7

A new Rooftime for your home this year This year, an estimated 75,000 homes in Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati will require work on their roof. In the spring, roofing crews begin an installation schedule that doesn’t slow down until after Thanksgiving, so homeowners need to contact a reputable roofer as soon as possible. Some roofers will not leave their bid with a customer the same day they measure the job creating further delays, others Like Rooftime, will prepare a quote and leave it with the homeowner. Homeowners need to consider that roofers who claim to be licensed or bonded in an effort to generate a phone call are being misleading. “If a roofer will lie to get a call; what will they do or say to get hired and take people’s money?” asks Sandy. “Rooftime has estimators who draw a weekly salary, and only bid on what a house needs,” said Feltner. “If a roof repair or partial roof is all that is needed, a Rooftime estimator has no financial gain in telling a homeowner any different!” As a final tip, the staff at Rooftime recommends that no money change hands until the work has been completed. “We don’t require a down payment,” said Justin Shoemaker. “We conduct a roof and ground inspection with the homeowner to be sure they are 100 percent satisfied, and only then can we get paid!” Rooftime’s commitment to satisfaction has earned them the Angie’s List Super Service Award every year since 2007. Sounds of summer Summer is here! Just listen to the sounds of birds chirping, and children splashing in the pool and playing outside after months of being cooped up indoors. What, you can’t hear them? Make sure your hearing is up to scratch. Just as the nature around us is experiencing a rebirth and renewal of sorts, so should your ears. If you are one of those people who can’t hear the sounds of summer (or any other season, for that matter), you are far from alone. In fact, according to National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), approximately
East | Northeast
17 percent of American adults, or 36 million people, report some degree of hearing loss. Hearing loss has been identified as “among the leading public health concerns” by the NIDCD. As you can see, the numbers are staggering, but they don’t tell the whole story. The part that is missing here is that a considerable number of people with hearing loss who could benefit from hearing aids, aren’t getting the help they need. Studies show that 4 in 10 people with moderate to severe hearing loss use hearing aids, and only 1 in 10 people with mild impairment use them.
June 16-17, 2010
Research also demonstrates that on average, people wait seven years before purchasing a hearing aid after learning of their hearing loss, while others never do. This means that millions of people walk around with untreated hearing loss, missing out on conversations, activities, interactions, and job opportunities. “Life is precious, and we only get one. We don’t want anyone who may be suffering with hearing loss to go another day without the help they need,” explains Dr. Amy Holland of Montgomery ENT Center. Dr. Holland is joined by Dr. Angela
Byrd, another Audiologist, as well as Dr. Mark Grosinger and Dr. E.C. Tinker. Dr. Grosinger and Dr. Tinker specialize in issues with the ears, nose, throat and facial plastic surgery. With such clear and undisputed benefits, why do so many people forego treatment? Among the primary reasons is the cost of hearing aids. While it is true that hearing aids are expensive, it may still be affordable if you take the initial price and spread it out over several years that an average hearing device will last.
Communitypress.com
You will have a very reasonable price of only $3 a day - the cost of a cup of coffee. Other reasons advanced in surveys for not wearing hearing aids are really moot points cosmetic considerations and fear of change. C’mon, get real: hearing aids make you look old but straining to hear everyone around you doesn’t? Wearing hearing aids can actually allow

Local scuba diving season has begun When people think of SCUBA diving, many places come to mind – Fiji, Hawaii, the Cayman Islands, St. Lucia, the Bahamas, the Red Sea, Galapagos and Australia. But what those same people may not realize is that every weekend, from June through October, hundreds of Greater Cincinnati residents head out for a day or two of scuba diving at local recreational dive sites. “Local scuba diving may not be diving in a tropical paradise, but it does allow certified scuba divers to enjoy a few of the things they love about diving, such as spending time in another world, and experiencing the weightless wonder of ‘flying without wings’,” said Jim Barrie the owner of The Scuba Shack in Florence. “While there are no tropical fish or ocean sea creatures in our local waters, there are numerous fresh water fish and
turtles. And even though there are no beautiful coral reefs here, there are a myriad of interesting rock formations and underwater plants. We also have plenty of sunken boats, airplanes, helicopters and other things to explore underwater at our local dive sites.” The Scuba Shack is located on Route 18, “just around the corner from Florence Mall.” In addition to scuba certification training, The Shack offers certified scuba divers the opportunity to go on Instructorescorted local dive outings most weekends from June through October. They also conduct several special event diving days, that include the Great Underwater Scavenger Hunt in August, and the Great Underwater Pumpkin Carving Contest in October. A typical local dive day consists of meeting up
with dive buddies, driving to a local dive site, gearing up, and doing a few dives to depths of 20 to 40 feet. Between dives, “surface interval” time is spent eating, socializing and planning the next dive. “Because scuba diving is 95 percent social, divers also gather for The Scuba Shack’s social gatherings that we call Club Aquarius events,’ said Barrie. “We have ‘ShackDoggie’ cookouts, ‘WalkIn’ outdoor movie nights, and Travel parties, which are frequently held on the Shack’s Party Patch behind the shop.” So if SCUBA diving is on your list of things to do someday, The Scuba Shack offers free “Try Scuba” sessions in their indoor heated pool. Tips for the ‘dog’ days of summer from Strictly Dogs It’s summer once again. If we have pets there are some special considerations for this time of year. The first issue concerns dogs and the heat. Always keep fresh water available for them because they drink much more in the summer time. If they are outside playing in the yard for long periods provide shel-
ter or a shady area for them, they are susceptible to heat stroke just like us. If you notice heavy panting and increased salivation be prepared to wet your dog down with tepid water. A dog’s temperature is normally 101 degrees anything over 105 is dangerous. Never leave your dog in a hot car while you shop, even on a mild
sunny day the car temp can reach 120 degrees. Plants are great both indoors and out but many are poisonous to dogs for more information go to the aspca.org Web site to see full list. Not to mention the time that it would take and the many days I would have to take off work to get all that work done. Bailey’s Hardware June Project: Deck in a Day Staining your deck may seem challenging, but by using PPG Porter Paints Acri-Shield acrylic/oil exterior stains, it has never been easier. Porter’s unique formula allows you to strip, clean, and stain all in the same day. If you have a deck with multiple coats of built-up stain, you may first need to strip the old stain from the wood. Pour PPG Stain Stripper in a small puddle. Spread the stripper in areas no larger than 6-feet to prevent the stripper from drying. After 20 minutes, scrub the area with a deck brush and hose away the stripper
with your garden hose on the highest pressure setting or use a pressure washer set to 500 to 1000 psi. If your deck doesn’t require a stripper, use PPG Deck Wash. Apply to the deck with a pressure tank sprayer and follow the same procedures used for the stripper. Thanks to Acri-Shield’s acrylic/oil formulas, you can stain your deck immediately after cleaning instead of waiting for the deck to dry. Apply the stain with a brush, roller or tank sprayer. If using a tank sprayer, back-brush to cover deck evenly and fill any cracks in the wood grain.

hair products such as Redken, Matrix, Sexy Hair, and Paul Mitchell. Our Nail Technician uses OPI nail products, including the new Axxium Soak Off Gel Nails. New to Serendipity is the Custom Spray Tan Service, in salon or in your home. This is not your 1980’s airbrush, but a stateof-the-art turbine system using high quality solutions, customized for your skin tone. No orange glow here, just a healthy, radiant golden brown tan. We offer mobile tanning, and tanning parties which are a great idea for a Girl’s Night In, Special Occasions, or Bridal parties. This July, Serendipity
will be sending two of our master stylists to Orlando, Florida to attend the Paris Hilton Dreamcatchers Hair Extension training. We chose Dreamcatchers because they are nondamaging to the natural hair, and reusable, a safe alternative to the glue in, or heat fusion type of extensions. These beautiful hair extensions will be available in July at Serendipity, the only salon in the area to offer them. See before and after pictures on our Facebook page. For more information on our services, or prices, call 734-0622 or visit our website at www.serendipitybethel.com.

To further complicate the issue, there are only a few countries on earth that have the right makeup to find that perfect diamond. Some of the most important diamond producing countries are Canada, Russia, Australia, Namibia, and Zaire. You could spend the rest of your life traveling the globe in your trusty dump truck looking for the perfect diamond, or you could just stop by Norris Jewelers in Milford and let their knowledgeable staff help you find exactly what you are looking for.
