Neidhard-Minges Funeral Home celebrates 150 years of service At Neidhard-Minges Funeral Home economical service and quality care are essential. They offer the experience of more than 150 years of service to local families. Neidhard-Minges Funeral Home is one of the oldest and most respected funeral homes in the Western Hills area. Their roots date back to 1860. The funeral home was founded by Andrew Neidhard about a year before the start of the Civil War. His son, Edward, took over the

Edward’s daughter married Henry Minges and in 1947 their oldest son James began working in the business after serving in World War II. He was the fourth generation of the Neidhard family. James continued with the long-standing Neidhard tradition of knothole baseball team sponsorships and in 1960, after taking

Here’s the path to creating an outdoor living room For leisurely entertaining this summer, take full advantage of the great outdoors and extend your living space by creating an outdoor room. Why not have an outdoor living room with comfortable seating for all or your friends, or a space where you could fire up the grill and dine out under the stars? Adding a level, low maintenance surface, like a patio, will give you not only the pleasure of living in your outdoor space, but of loving it too. A great way to create this space is by installing pavers, bricks, or stone to create beautiful patios and paths. Whether you do it yourself or hire a professional, it can be as easy as installing a winding path to connect your home to your garden or creating a space for a cozy bench to watch the birds splashing in the bird bath. Pavers come in many different shapes, sizes and colors, offering you ways to customize your ideas to

match your house and landscaping. Once you have your patio or walkways installed, you can make your backyard inviting and appealing all summer long. Here are a couple of fun, easy tips:
• Plant flowers, herbs, and vegetables in containers to add a pop of color to your outdoor living spaces. Keep these lush and lively all summer by planting seedlings in a good quality potting mix.
• Keep unwanted grass and weeds from popping up between the pavers. This weed control can be used early in the season between the pavers to kill the weeds
you see popping up, and will keep new weeds from growing for up to one year. What a great way to spend less time working and more time enjoying your yard! Create see page 5
• Find sturdy, comfortable seating that will withstand the elements for years to come. Try wrought iron, wood, or even resin (often made from post-consumer bottle waste such as milk containers) for low-maintenance options. These are readily available in your local garden or specialty stores. • Seating is even more comfortable with the quick addition of colorful cushions and throw pillows. Swap these out for a change of scenery and store pillows in a clean, dry space (like a garage or storage bench) when not in use to extend their lives.

I'm in my late 20s. When should I start? Dr. H. It is never too early to start taking care of your skin as it is crucial to long-term beauty. The accumulation of sun damage even as a child leads to 80 percent of skin aging. While prevention is key with proper use of a sunscreen that blocks completely both the UVA and UVB spectrum, some of us already have existing skin damage even in our 20s that can be taken care of early as a smaller problem, rather than later as a bigger issue. Using the right products and treatments to protect and correct, really does help us keep our skin looking more youthful much longer. Q. I have really big pores. Q. Many of my friends have started to use Botox, but I am not sure if it is right for me. Can I possibly just try it? Dr. H. Absolutely! Many people try Botox just for special occasions: weddings, reunions, or parties. Botox takes 10-14 days to reach its full effect and lasts for 3-6 months, so plan accordingly. The goal is a relaxed look that helps eliminate unsightly lines around the eyes, on the forehead and other areas of the face. Some people opt to continue to use Botox and notice that over time less Botox and treatments are needed to maintain the same relaxed look. The ultimate goal is to keep the muscles relaxed to prevent future wrinkles from being etched on your face.

The local scuba diving season has begun When people think of scuba diving, many places come to mind – Fiji, Hawaii, the Cayman Islands, St. Lucia, the Bahamas, the Red Sea, Galapagos and Australia. But what those same people may not realize is that every weekend, from June through October, hundreds of Greater Cincinnati residents head out for a day or two of scuba diving at local recreational dive sites. “Local scubadiving may not be diving in a tropical paradise, but it does allow certified scubadivers to enjoy a few of the things they love about diving, such as spending time in another world, and experiencing the weightless wonder of ‘flying without wings’,” said Jim Barrie the owner of The Scuba Shack in Florence. “While there are no tropical fish or ocean sea creatures in our local waters, there are numerous fresh water fish and
turtles. And even though there are no beautiful coral reefs here, there are a myriad of interesting rock formations and underwater plants. We also have plenty of sunken boats, airplanes, helicopters and other things to explore underwater at our local dive sites.” The Scuba Shack is located on Route 18, “just around the corner from Florence Mall.” In addition to scubacertification training, The Shack offers certified scubadivers the opportunity to go on Instructor- escorted local dive outings most weekends from June through October. They also conduct several special event diving days, that include the Great Underwater Scavenger Hunt in August, and the Great Underwater Pumpkin Carving Contest in October. A typical local dive day consists of meeting up with dive buddies, driv-
ing to a local dive site, gearing up, and doing a few dives to depths of 20 to 40 feet. Between dives, ‘surface interval’ time is spent eating, socializing and planning the next dive. “Because scubadiving is 95 percent social, divers also gather for The Scuba Shack’s social gatherings that we call Club Aquarius events,’ said Barrie. “We have ‘ShackDoggie’ cookouts, ‘WalkIn’ outdoor movie nights, and Travel parties, which are frequently held on the Shack’s Party Patch behind the shop.” So if scubadiving is on your list of things to do someday, The Scuba Shack offers free ‘Try Scuba’ sessions in their indoor heated pool.
