From snoring to Sleep apnea to CPAP alternatives My name is Dr. Timothy Kitzmiller and I have sleep apnea. I started snoring when I was in my late 20s. Over the years my snoring got worse and I would wake myself up with a gasp or a snort. My wife, Lori, was increasingly having to wake me up to stop snoring or start breathing. I finally decided that after 23 years we both deserved a quiet night’s sleep. A recommendation was made to do an overnight sleep study to find out if I had the life-threatening condition called Obstructive Sleep Apnea. To my surprise I found out that I was not only snoring but stopped breathing 28 times per hour! It was recommended that I start using a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine. I struggled with it since I like to sleep on my side and stomach. I could finally relate to our patients’ complaints about mask leaks, strap marks on their face, sinus problems and feeling like Darth Vader. Dr. Timothy Kitzmiller treats his own snoring and sleep apnea with Oral Appliance Therapy. Children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder have impaired functioning in multiple settings, including home, school, and in relationships with peers.

Overcoming ADHD Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, ADHD, is one of the most common mental disorders that develop in children. Children with ADHD have impaired functioning in multiple settings, including home, school, and in relationships with peers. If untreated, the disorder can have long-term adverse effects into adolescence and adulthood.

Could I have Adult ADHD? ADHD does not stop when you turn 18. Sometimes, it’s not discovered until you are well into your adult years. Some parents have recognized the symptoms in themselves after bringing their children to be tested. Symptoms include: Adults often describe it as: “Every part of your brain is working hard, but your secretary quit.” Children often describe it as: “Your brain is like a race car, but your brakes need to work better.”

Is there a test for ADHD? While there is no single test for ADHD, testing is very important. All too often people are diagnosed ADHD without the proper testing and then placed on medications that could be causing them more harm than good. A detailed history should be taken and then a variety of subjective measurements (testing) should administered to ensure the right diagnosis.

What is the best way to help people with ADHD? A multi-modal approach. Since ADHD doesn’t just present as one symptom, but as many symptoms, the treatment needs to address all the symptoms. Medications can help, but that won’t fix organization or time management. Utilizing coaching for effective ‘stuff and time’ management as well as medications or cognitive tricks to help maintain attention.

Can ADHD be cured with medication? Can my inattention or disorganization be something other than ADHD? Many types of mental illness or just plain stress can cause symptoms that look like ADHD. Often times people with an anxiety disorder have trouble focusing, or decision making due to being fearful, just as individuals with bipolar disorder may have many aspects of their lives in disarray.

4

Pills don’t teach skills. Often medication helps with the moment to moment prevention of distraction or impulsivity, but it does not teach a person prioritization, organization or how to effectively study. Medication treatment has been around for more than 50 years and has proven effective, but it’s definitely not a ‘cure’ for ADHD.

A contractor that cares about your roofing needs John Batchalor, whose house is on the river, admits that he was taken by surprise. The Bellevue home owner never expected to be treated as well as he was by the staff at Roof Time. In fact, their attention to detail and dedication to quality craftsmanship left him breathless. “They went above and beyond, they exceeded my personal expectation,” Batchalor said. “The final project is great, it’s outstanding. It was done right.” The work done to his Fairfield Avenue home was extensive. The Roof Time team stripped three layers of roof from the threestory high house, added 16 inch-

es of Owens Corning fiberglass blow-in insulation, replaced the aging box gutters and rebuilt his chimney. Roof Time used the Owens Corning’s 30-year DURATION, Energy Star Shingle. This shingle reduces utility bills by reflecting the sun. In addition, Batchalor qualified for the $1,500 tax credit. Batchalor will save energy, make his home quieter and more comfortable and improve his property value. “There are good people at Roof Time,” Batchalor said. “I didn’t believe there was a roofing company that cares like they do.” His lengthy Angie’s List report about his experience is a featured

Quality hardwood floors at Bluford Jackson Oak floors add to the value of a house, and lend a richness and warmth to the family homestead. Hardwood floors also add class to commercial buildings, boosting the value of a business, and encouraging people to become customers. Bluford Jackson and Son Hardwood Flooring has been in business since 1919, when Bluford Jackson started the business in Madeira. They have since moved to 910 US Highway 50 in Milford, where they are located now. “That was my great-grandfather,” said Ryan Jackson, who along with his grandfather, John, now run the business. “He started the business, and set the standards high, which is what we follow now. We listen to our customers, and that insures satisfaction.”

Bluford Jackson and Son has been the leading source of hardwood flooring in the Cincinnati area for over 90 years. They specialize in installing and refinishing hardwood flooring at a competitive price for both residential and commercial buildings. “All of our flooring is the highest quality oak, which comes from Monticello, Kentucky, and Portsmouth, Ohio, among other places,” said Jackson. “The brands that we use are 3M, Oshkosh Designs, and Dura Seal, because they are known for their intricate craftsmanship, their durability, style and aesthetic appeal.” According to Jackson, there are not many problems the company cannot remedy. “A lot of what we do is tearing up carpets and putting in

new wood floors,” explained Jackson. “Sometimes people have a bad stain in a small part of their floor, but it happens to be very visible. Usually we can sand that stain on site, and then make it match the rest of the floor. Other times we tear up the tile in a kitchen, and replace it with hardwood floor that complements the rest of the room.” Bluford Jackson and Son offers a variety of styles, woods and finishes, and some of those

The company has nineteen employees who are all trained in the superb installation techniques used by the company. “One of the things about our refinishing is that we use a dustless sanding method,” said Jackson. “We have a trailer that we park in the driveway, and it allows us to get rid of almost every bit of dust, so the homeowner doesn’t have to deal with the dust.” If a floor is water soaked, Jackson says fans can be used to dry it out, and then they use sanding to try and restore the floor to a new beauty. Contractor from page 7 and every time!” Roof Time conducts a free Energy Audit check-up with every quote. By using a thermal image camera (like the ones the cable TV ghost hunters use) and digital thermometers, their estimators can pinpoint the problem areas that hide under the roof. Roof Time is an Owens Corning Preferred Contractor and is one of only three roofers locally who have obtained the added certification as a TOP OF THE HOUSE roofer- attic insulator. A Roof Time quote includes options for installing a roof ventilation system that meets or exceeds the FHA specification; increases the attic insulation to the DOE recommended level of R-60, and a radiant barrier that reduces the attic’s temperature by as much as 50 degrees every day.

Using these techniques Roof Time is confidant that most homeowners can extend their roof’s warranty. Roof Time began in 1995, when Ricky and Sandy Feltner started a small family business that they operated out of their home. By 1999, Preferred Roofing’s four office staff (which included one daughter, one son and one son-in-law) and their terrific work crews had earned a ranking in the Top 100 Contractors in America, and had sales in excess of $2 million! Ricky passed away at the end of 1999, and the company struggled to carry on without his dynamic leadership. Today Ricky’s legacy has been preserved by no less than FIVE roofing contractors that were once part of his vision, all successfully operating their own companies using the same prin-

ciples and ideals he established over 15 years ago! At Roof Time, Sandy’s daughter Missy is still answering the calls (even at nights and on the weekends) and Ricky’s grandson Justin is now a project estimator! Terry Littleton, who started as a member of one of Ricky’s roof crews in 1997, now runs his own crew as a job site foreman, and oversees any service calls that may be received. Roof Time is a true familyowned and -operated business with deep community roots; over 15 year’s business experience, and is now into its third generation of serving Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky! Roof Time’s attention to the details has earned them the prestigious Angie’s List Super Service Award for the past four years in a row, as well as the Community Press Readers’ Choice for 2009!

Estimators arrive on time and prepared, in neatly lettered vehicles and uniforms; inspect the attic portion of the roof, then inspect and measure from the rooftop (not from the ground like most companies have started to do). An estimate can be prepared right from their vehicles or e-mailed back the same day! Estimates are free and include color digital pictures of what they find. Roof Time utilizes all the best of today’s technology such as Thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint hidden leaks and decay, and satellite measurement software to offer “to the inch measurements” for “to the penny pricing.” Visit www.newrooftime.com or call Missy at 513-753-TIME (8463) to get a free inspection of your roof, attic insulation, siding or gutter system!

How to make your house spectacularly for one day Most days, you probably want visitors to feel welcome and secure in your home. But one day a year, it’s fun to scare the dickens out of them so make the most of Halloween and all the good-natured frights that come along with the spookiest of holidays. While your neighbors may pull out all the stops decorating outdoors for Christmas, an over-the-top Halloween display can also earn you a place in neighborhood lore. The Halloween decor experts at online retailer SeventhAvenue.com offer some tips to consider as you create a spooky playground to impress the trick-or-treaters: • Know your audience. It might be a good idea to match the level of scary in your Halloween decorations with the age of the children you expect to come trick-or-treating. For younger children, think fun. Older kids might appreciate a good scare. • Choose a theme. Halloween is the perfect holiday for creativity, so when it comes to the front yard, don’t limit yourself. Decorations that center around a theme are the most impactful and will delight children when walking to your doorstep. You could choose something as simple as a graveyard theme, leading visitors through a

path of gravestones and creaky gates, with zombie decorations for good measure. Or use ideas from your favorite scary movie. If you need ideas, try browsing outdoor Halloween decor at online retailers like www.seventhavenue.com. • Direct traffic. Now that you’ve chosen a theme, think about how you want your guests to experience it, beginning with the sidewalk and ending with your front door. For example, if you went with a Dracula theme you could lead your visitors to the front door with lights that resemble chandelier candles. Solar lanterns could also be used to light the path, as they won’t leave you burning through batteries or electricity. Well lit signs could also be used to lead visitors through a scavenger hunt through your front yard. • Dress the part. To make your theme really work for you, wear a costume to the door that goes along with it. It’s a great way to get in touch with your inner child and to thrill the kids in your neighborhood.

Communitypress.com

• Safety first. While it’s great to create the scariest yard on the block, you should also make sure it’s safe. Walkways and hazards like ponds or stairs should be well lit. • Get help from nature. The trees in your yard make a great place to hang spooky decorations. Use old grass clippings to give a spookier feel to zombies and gravestones. You can use leaves as stuffing paper for bags and figurines, filling them with life. • Treats matter. We all know the number one reason kids look forward to Halloween is the bounty they’ll bring home from a long night of trick-or-treating. Considering that everyone else will give out candy, make your house more memorable by giving a toy related to your theme. Or, give glow bracelets that are not only fun but will also keep them safe by making them visible in the dark. Courtesy of ARAcontent

Keegan’s serves up fresh seafood in your neighborhood When people want good, fresh seafood in the Greater Cincinnati area, they don’t have to go to the coast, because Tom Keegan has done the work for them, and brings the coast to them on a daily basis. Keegan’s Specialty Seafood Market, located at 6675 Salem Road, imports seafood from all over the world, and sells it fresh. “What distinguishes my store from the big supermarkets is that theirs is usually frozen, and while there is nothing wrong with frozen, the seafood I have is fresh,” stated Keegan. “They can’t do what I do. I have a background in air freight and trucking, and for instance, when they catch shrimp in Louisiana in the morning, I have it in my store the next day. That’s fresh.” With such wonderful freshness, Keegan’s customers will never get chemically treated seafood.

“Many stores treat their seafood with carbon monoxide to make it pink, so that it looks fresh,” explained Keegan. “I don’t do that. All of my seafood comes from sustainable areas that are not overfished. Our king crab legs come from the Dutch Harbor, we don’t get it from Russia and China where they catch the crabs any time, and don’t pay attention to when they are at their peak size.” So if your mouth is watering for Chilean Sea Bass, from the waters of Chile and Antarctica, or stone crabs from Florida, or Coho salmon from Alaska, visit Keegan’s Specialty Seafood Market, and you’ll know you have the best quality seafood you can possibly get. Or visit keeganseafood.com to get a virtual tour of the varieties of seafood offered.

Adopt-A-Senior program The 2010 Adopt-ASenior holiday gift program, sponsored by Clermont Senior Services, is well underway. The program provides muchneeded gifts for Clermont County seniors. Some donors like to collect household items or fill gift baskets/boxes with personal care items or cleaning supplies for the gift pantry. Others want to be matched with seniors and buy gifts from their “wish lists.” Gift cards to area retail stores, gas stations and fast food restaurants, along with monetary donations, also are donated. One gift recipient from last year's program commented, “While searching

through the beautiful gift bag, I thought how unusual for a stranger to send me presents that I needed, yet couldn't purchase myself. I burst into tears at this showing of genuine caring.” Another added, “I appreciated the box of goodies from Boy Scout

Troop 196. It perked me up to think young boys would do such a nice thing for the elderly.” If you would like to participate in this year's Adopt-A-Senior program, please call Sharon at 5364060. You also can e-mail her at sbrumagem@clermontseniors.com.

Autumn health notes Here are some sure indications that the season is changing-the air is getting crisp, leaves are changing colors, Halloween candy is on the shelves . . . and “flu vaccinations available” signs are popping up all over. What should you do to stay healthy as we move out of summer? Here’s some sound advice for you and your family. The seasonal flu is clearly a health hazard, especially for seniors. Seasonal flu is contagious and can range from a minor illness to a life-threatening one. In fact, the CDC reports that about 36,000 people in the United States die each year from the flu. The best way to prevent flu is to have a vaccination. In fact, even if you receive the vaccine late

in the season, it is still worth doing. Fall is the best time to get that all important flu shot and there are lots of places to get it-from the local drug store to your doctor’s office. Make sure you take the time to get that flu shot! Last winter we had lots of concerns about another type of flu. That was H1N1 and standard flu vaccine did not prevent it. To this point, there’s no indication that H1N1 vaccinations will be necessary this year so we’ll watch and hope that stays the case. In addition to your flu shot, some of the key ways to stay healthy are good all year long. If there is one thing you need to do well to maintain your health, it is

good hand washing. Washing your hands thoroughly is one of the very best ways to prevent the spread of disease. Use soap and warm water and try singing two choruses of “Happy birthday” to yourself to get a sense of how long that washing should take. Make sure that the chill in the air does not put a chill in your activity regime. Keep moving, walking outside when you can and inside when the weather is not conducive, can help keep your body strong and healthy. Eat properly and make sure that you are putting the right “fuel” in to nourish your “engine.” Take care of yourself-that’s the key to a healthy today and a healthy future.

LUNCH from page 15 for your individual needs by a home health care agency. The home health care agency, on-site seven days a week, helps to promote maximum independence and dignity while providing such services as bathing, dressing, medication reminders and assistance with other daily living activities. Sutton Grove now offers a Memory

Lane Program, for individuals with early memory loss, incorporated with 24-hour medical care and a personalized care plan. More importantly, you’re not just a resident at Sutton Grove, you’re a member of a family. You’re known by name and cared about. For more information or to arrange a tour, call 231-0008.

BLUFORD from page 8 designs they are able to install are stunning. “We don’t do structural problems, where the basic structure needs repair,” said Jackson. “But most of the cosmetic damage we can repair or replace.” At a time when so many jobs are outsourced overseas, and much of the industry that made America great is no longer on the rise, it is refreshing that Bluford Jackson and Son uphold the high standards in business that pays its way forward from an era when America’s pride was high. When customers call 513-831-6231, they can rest assured that qualified technicians will

be on their job. “We have always tried to do the highest quality work that we can possibly do,” said John Jackson, whose father started the business. “I am proud that our business has such a history of quality. I remember a young lady who called me and wanted me to do her floors in a house in Indian Hill, and she told me our company did flooring for her grandma, and her mother, and now she wanted us to do hers. I am also proud that my grandson has taken over so well. It makes me feel good that we have such a great company.”
