etting fit makes you feel good inside and out. When you exercise, your clothes fit better, your energy levels get a boost and it helps the stresses of your life melt away in a pure endorphin rush. Luckily, no matter where you live, it’s easier than ever to get exercise all year round so that you can maintain your health and fitness.
How to stay fresh while getting fit balance, keep products like a refreshing mist spritz and an exfoliating cleanser on hand and in your medicine cabinet.
• Hair apparent:
Whether you’re pounding the pavement or hitting the gym, keep in mind that beauty and working out aren’t mutually exclusive. With a bit of smart preparation, you’ll be feeling good during your fitness routine and gorgeously glowing afterward. Keep these ideas in mind to help you look great, even between workouts.
• In the drink: As you work out, it’s natural that your body will shed water in the form of sweat, and it’s essential that you keep your body’s fluid levels up.
Dehydration can cause everything from discomfort to serious sickness, so don’t let your body down. Even when you’re not working out, hot days call for extra hydration. The added benefits are that drinking more water can help to keep your skin clear and your appetite sated.
• Face forward: The exertion of exercising can be a pore-clogging nightmare. That’s why it’s particularly important to have a good skin care regime adapted to your skin’s needs. To keep your skin radiant and in
Swimming’s a great way to stay active – whether in the pool or the ocean – but it can take a toll on your locks. Whatever your activities, it’s important to use an eco-friendly shampoo – after all, a good choice for the environment can be a good choice for you, too. If your tresses are stressed out, be sure to give them a deep conditioning treatment, too. Whether your inspiration is getting healthy or a beauty boost, exercise is the best way to do it. Taking advantage of the opportunity to work out, regardless of the season, with these thoughts in mind will help you look your best, throughout the year.
Honor excellence in nursing Every year in Cincinnati, patients have stories of nurses who made a difference through direct patient care. If you know a nurse who has exemplified excellence in nursing, you have the opportunity to honor that caregiver at the 19th Annual UC College of Nursing Florence Nightingale Awards for Nursing April 28 at the Hyatt Regency, Cincinnati.
Six winners will receive $1,000 awards and 10 finalists will receive $400 awards. All nominees will be honored. The Florence Nightingale Awards for Nursing, established in 1992, recognize individuals in the nursing profession for excellence in the delivery of direct patient care. Each year the board of advisers calls upon the
Greater Cincinnati community to nominate individual nurses who exemplify the spirit of caring embodied by Florence Nightingale. The gala awards dinner is sponsored by Mercy Health Partners. For details, go to UC College of Nursing website, www.nursing.uc.edu, or call 558-5311. The deadline for nominations is March 4.

Keep your New Year’s resolutions Nearly 45 percent of Americans make New Year’s resolutions, and the most popular resolution is losing weight. Not surprisingly, 75 percent of those who commit to losing weight won’t make it past the first week, because they have an “all or nothing” approach. “Our goals can only be reached through a vehicle of a plan, in which we must fervently believe, and upon which we must vigorously act. There is no other route to success.” – Stephen A. Brennan To stay on track building on motivational strategies is essential to assist you in succeeding. Reward yourself along the way for minor victories (losing 5 pounds equals a massage, or a night out with your girlfriends). We are great at beating our-
selves up – practice celebrating. Change your environment (out with the junk food, in with healthy snacks). This can be a challenge if you don’t get support from the rest of your family. Have the conversation before you begin. Get support – it is difficult to do things alone. Find an exercise buddy, dietitian, personal trainer or a doctor who will support you on your journey. Accept setbacks and move on. People who make resolutions and succeed in reaching their goals have the same number of slip-ups as those who resolve and fail. Dr. Luke Reineck says, “The difference is in how they perceive their failures. Keeping a resolution is a marathon not a 100-yard dash. Those that have a plan and work it will succeed. Slow and steady wins the race.”

Matching Meier’s wines and Valentine’s Day meals Valentine’s Day, the most romantic day of the year and wine, is there any drink more romantic for the occasion? Naturally wine, Valentine’s Day and food all pair well to make a memorable time together. To do this keep the foods light including the wine for chicken and fish choices and heavier for meats and pastas. Dinner at home can be extra special with a nice wine for each course. A good choice with a salad is Meier’s Sauterne Wine, light and fruity and it pairs well with most salad dressings. Another wine that goes well is Meier’s White Catawba Wine that is rich, fruity and not too dry. It can add some zest to most any choice of salad. Main dishes like pasta call for a hearty wine like Meier’s Red Table Wine that goes well with red sauces like marinara that are sometimes garlicky but pair well with a more robust red wine. Grilled chicken or seafood deserve lighter wines that do not mask the food taste but also have enough acid to come through with every sip. Try Meier’s White Table Wine that is on the dry side but still is a bit fruit forward so it goes well with seafood dishes. Dessert and after dinner wines may be the best part of a romantic Valentine’s Dinner. There are so many choices. Desserts with chocolate pair well with Meier’s Ruby Port and Meier’s Cream Sherry. Try a chocolate soufflé or a chocolate cheesecake or

even chocolate dipped strawberries. These are always great favorites and so yummy to share with your loved one. A chocolate fondue can be prepared at home and add to the fun of any Valentine meal. Often overlooked are sparkling wines that work well with sweet desserts. Try Reiem Spumante sparkling wine that has a distinct Muscat flavor that goes nicely with most any dessert or is delicious alone for a relaxing end to a perfect dinner. If a dinner is not what you desire but would like to have friends over for wine and dessert then keep a few basic rules in mind. Whatever dessert that you serve, try to have the sweetness of the dessert be similar to the sweetness of the wine. In other words, for lighter chocolates match with lighter white wines. Dark chocolates always match well with heavier bodied table wines and heavy red dessert wines. Chocolate desserts are great but don’t limit yourself to only chocolate, there are many other desserts that pair well with wine just keep the basic rule in mind about the sweetness. You can always buy a few dessert samples to try and have fun matching them with your favorite wines before the big event with your friends. Meier’s Wine Cellars is located at 6955 Plainfield Road, Silverton, just 1.5 miles down Montgomery Road from the Kenwood Towne Centre. Their staff can help you select wines that best match your din-

Dreams come true With the holidays behind us, Dan Partin, coowner of J.K.Best Construction Company, says that homeowners begin to turn their attention to spring and to thinking about home remodeling projects that are often long overdue. He said that in some cases homeowners actually write out a formal “wish list” of things they need to do or want to do to their home.” He explained that homeowners rarely “want” to replace a roof, but they will replace it out of a need. General updating can fall into the category of “want” or “need.” “Either projects categorized as want or need can find its way onto the wish list if for no other reason than it adds to the value of the home, he added. According to J.K.Best co-owner Brian Martin, home remodeling projects fall into one of two categories: Outdoor and indoor. Indoor projects include basements, bathrooms, countertops, doors, electrical upgrades, flooring, indoor lighting, insulation, kitchens, painting, plumbing upgrades, porch additions, tile floors, updating, and so on. Outdoor projects include concrete, doors, driveways, electrical upgrades, gutters and downspouts, outdoor lighting, patio doors, pavers, painting, porch additions, pressure washing, roofing, siding, windows, and so on. J.K.Best Construction has a knack of working within most homeowner’s

budgets. Unlike many home-remodeling companies, they don’t offer or provide arbitrary discounts. They give it their “best shot” at the outset. According to Partin, they are competitive with most other home-remodeling companies on price. “The real difference is our quality, thoroughness, and a final outcome that is second to none.” In addition to working within a homeowner’s budget, J.K.Best Construction also prides itself on educating homeowners prior to presenting an actual quotation. Martin explained that in the majority of cases home remodeling projects start with a plain sheet of paper. “There often seems to be an unlimited number of options,” Martin explained. “We do our best to make sure that our clients understand what those options are. We want our clients to make good decisions. By the same token, we won’t let them make mistakes and we won’t let them overspend,” he added. J.K.Best Construction Company serves the Loveland, Indian Hill, Madeira, and Montgomery areas. “Our website (www.JKBestConstruction .com) shows a number of photos of projects we completed recently,” Partin said. “Regardless of the size, scope, or complexity of the project, the one thing we’re proudest of is our attention to detail, and you can see this in all the photos.”

When there isn’t enough time, call Regal Maid Let’s face it – most of us, if not all of us, have a full plate these days. Most of our plates, in fact, runneth over! There is so little time left in the day/week to accomplish all the things that are on our to-do lists, including cleaning our homes. Because of the busy schedules we all seem to keep and for several other reasons, many people have turned to Regal Maid and have been doing so for 25 years. This family-owned local business has achieved this milestone and outlasted much competition in the area by sticking with their core philosophy of “treating the employees right first and always focusing on the internal customer service they provide first, and the external customer service falls at a close second,” said Andy Venneman, owner.
East | Northeast
According to Andy, the key to giving their clients a great experience and the clean home or room every time is to make sure the employees are happy with their positions and responsibilities. That positive momentum being a focus in turn translates into how the employees operate and perform at the clients’ homes or businesses. This way of running the business has kept Regal Maid providing excellent service and has kept some clients using the service since 1986. Regal Maid has also been continuously involved in the community through donations, providing local employment opportunities and being involved with local schools. The navy blue, fuel efficient cars that the cleaning service uses are a familiar sight to many resi-

dents in Northern Kentucky and are often on the road as many of us drive to work. Regal Maid services businesses as well as residents. Often, there is a misconception about having to be “wealthy” to use a cleaning service, but Regal Maid has been spreading the word that their customers call for many different reasons and have many different needs and income levels. Several calls are made by people who find that they are simply too busy to keep up with the task of cleaning nooks and crannies on a monthly or weekly basis, or that find that a particular room in their home is a high traffic area or even an ignored area that is simply too much to keep up with. Clients call to get help because they physically cannot

do the work that needs to be done, because perhaps they are sick or elderly or their loved ones call to help in that situation. Regal Maid caters to each customer’s particular needs, whether big or small, one time or weekly, and this flexible service has been a huge part in getting to their 25th anniversary. Many customers also give the gift of a cleaner home as a gift to moms on Mothers Day, birthday gifts for friends and loved ones, wedding gifts for the couples home, Valentine’s Day to give their special one a day off from chores, etc., in the way of gift certificates which are easily purchased online or by phone. Jim Barrie wants to share his love for SCUBA diving, so he’s letting everyone try it. His dive shop, The Scuba Shack, (www.TheScubaPlace.com) located in Florence, is offering a “Try SCUBA Experience” to anyone interested in diving. “SCUBA diving is not a sport. It’s not a hobby. It’s a lifestyle! We want to expose as many people as we can to this exciting way of life,” said Barrie. Barrie has owned The Scuba Shack for 12 years, and in that time has been told by countless people that they would love to try diving. He knows that if they do, they’ll love it! So he wants to give them the opportunity. All those who would like to try SCUBA diving will be geared-up and go for a dip with a certified instructor in The Scuba Shack’s indoor, heated, 10 foot-deep, diver training pool. Reservations are required, and can be made by calling 859-283-1550. The Scuba Shack also offers SCUBA certification training. Through comprehensive classroom and pool training, divers learn proper technique, safety measures, and how to use the equipment. Once certified, a diver is ready to go on one of the shop’s many trips to dive locations in the United States and abroad. The Shack currently has trips scheduled to: Florida, North Carolina, St. Lucia, Bonaire, Fiji, Bali/Indonesia, Egypt and The Red Sea. Pricing varies by destination. “There’s nothing quite like a group trip” said Barrie. “Both divers and non-divers come back with a group of new friends, having visited some of the world’s most beautiful destinations” he said.

Cedar Village debuts music video on YouTube Cedar Village Retirement Community staff believe that “Sometimes you just have to do things for fun!” And that is exactly what they did when they united staff and residents on a joint project to create their second annual music video. As did the 2009 video, the new music video has become a hit on the Internet site YouTube. Featuring choreography and dancing by residents, volunteers and staff members, the video is set to original music performed by songwriter and producer Mark Rossio of Columbus. Filmed by Jeff Hill Productions of Mason, producing a music video promises to become an annual event. “We had so much fun making the first music video in 2009,” said Carol Silver Elliott, CEO and president of Cedar Village. “And we were amazed by the thousands of hits, and the positive feedback we were receiving on YouTube,” said Silver Elliott. “We did this to bring together staff and our residents in a fun, creative way. Posting the video on YouTube allowed it to be shared with family, friends and many others across the country and around the world,” she said. The 2009 video featured various departments within Cedar Village, each
creating their own special part of the production. This year, the planning team, headed by Director of Development Sally Korkin, decided to incorporate a theme. The theme, Korkin explained, is “hands.” “Hands are such a symbol of the care we provide at Cedar Village and the relationships we build with our residents. It just seemed to express who we are in a very simple, yet powerful, way,” she said. Residents and staff all wore special blue rubber bracelets that say “Life Begins at Cedar Village” and many are still wearing them daily. Once the video was completed, there was a “premiere” with the residents; it was featured at the employee holiday party; it played continuously at Cedar Village’s special Mitzvah Day event Dec. 24 and was, of course, posted on YouTube. Within 24 hours of posting, hundreds of “hits” were already recorded and the feedback has been great. “At Cedar Village, we do believe that age is just a number and our slogan, “Life Begins at Cedar Village, embodies our philosophy,” said Silver Elliott. “This video is one fun way to demonstrate that commitment.” To view the video on YouTube and search Cedar Village Music Video.
