Discover Norris Jewelers Everyone can agree that we live in a fastpaced world. A drive-thru for dinner, an express checkout lane at the grocery store. Somewhere along the way we traded a personal touch for convenience, and quality for a little bit of speed. What did we really gain in the end? How many times have you gotten home and realized your “convenient” order was wrong? Remember a time when businesses took pride in what they did? What happened to the day where you were greeted by name when you walked through the door? These types of businesses still exist. They are easily some of the best kept secrets around town. Milford is home to one of these businesses. You should see what others have discovered at Norris Jewelers. “We want to be known as a jeweler people can trust. Every day we strive for honesty and integrity in addition to our quality craftsmanship,” explains Norris Jewelers’ founder Ken Norris. “We’ve built our business on repeat customers by forming personal relationships one customer at a time. That’s been one of biggest factors to our successes over the years.”

“When your name is on the front of the store, you tend to care much more about your customers experience and want to see everyone taken care of,” says Norris Jeweler’s President Laura Norris.

Rooftime is Top of the House Roof repairs keep the phones ringing of the hook at Rooftime at this time of year. “We stay steady all year, even over the winter,” said Office Manager Sandy Feltner. “But from now till Thanksgiving, we are really busy.” Rooftime does more than just Owens Corning roof systems. “We are certified as a Top Of The House contractor by Owens Corning, one of only three here in our area,” she continued.” So we get a lot of calls about attic insulation, siding, and gutter toppers, but roof calls lead the way.” “Our roof calls include what other roofers have installed incorrectly and are

now leaking, to a roof that needs replacing, and everything in between. Fifty percent of calls are due to some roofer’s poor workmanship, and fifty percent from a roof that reached its life expectancy.” To avoid ever becoming part of the 50 percent that are leaking, she advises homeowners to consider a company’s Better Business Bureau file, an Angie’s List Super Service Award, and references that a homeowner can call and check. “We are a non-licensed industry, unlike plumbers and electricians and that opens the door for poor workmanship and roofs being replaced when only a repair would have

L I V I N G

worked,” she said. Many roofing companies don’t like to deal with repairs “because there’s no money in it” or they don’t like trying to fix someone else’s mistake. But Rooftime has no problem diagnosing a roofs problem and bidding a repair, if it’s all that is needed. “It’s the building block of our company,” she says. “Most folks who we do repairs for call us back when other work needs to be done. We build a relationship and that evolves into other work - siding, gutter protection, and attic insulation. Our three estimators do not earn commissions, so they only bid what you need, if a couple

hundred dollar repair will fix your home, we won’t try to tell you differently.” Five of the most common roof repairs Rooftime gets include: Missing shingles, A piece of shingle in the yard is an obvious sign. But in many cases, homeowners don’t know there’s a problem until a stain or spot shows up on the ceiling inside. The best way to prevent a leak is to get the roof inspected every couple of years. “Rooftime offers free estimates that can include color digital pictures and a thermal camera scan to pinpoint any problems! “Flashing leaks, most often, leaks occur in the flashing area, where metalwork is installed at any penetration detail on the roof, spots where proper

May 19, 2010

workmanship is especially important, for example, a chimney, a skylight, a pipe boot, or a wall. “The gutter system is only as good as the way it is installed,” Sandy said. “We find a lot of gutters improperly fastened to begin with so they loosen quickly.” Gutters are first cleaned, and then properly secured, making sure the pitching is right for drainage and that the end caps and miters are sealed to prevent leaking. Skylights, A skylight that needs to be replaced or one that has been compromised in some manner usually brings a Rooftime crew out. A lot of roofers don’t like to deal with skylights because they are somewhat complicated and often come from many different manufacturers. Skylights have come a long way and you should be OK as long as you have a good quality window with proper installation on a pitched roof. Ventilation, Insulation, Radiation, a repair often found in the summer occurs in homes that are older and need to be properly balanced for proper air flow. If you don’t have good air flow through the attic; shingles will prematurely fail and cause leaks. The sun beating down on the roof raises the surface temperature by 20-40 degrees DAILY! The last thing you want is for the underside of the roof to be heated and “cooking.” Having at least 20 inches of attic insulation and a radiation barrier will reduce the inside attic temperature by 50 degrees, making your home cooler and the AC working less, saving your energy bill!

She has numerous health issues, including a serious heart condition, and macular degeneration, which has left her blind. She lost her hearing at age 36. May is Better Hearing Month Hearing loss is becoming increasingly common in the United States as younger people lose their hearing due to noise exposure and as the baby boomers age. Better Hearing Month is a way of reaching those reluctant to have their hearing tested. Most people wait too long before seeking help for their hearing loss. The Audiology staff at Montgomery ENT Center encourages everyone, young and old, to have their hearing tested this month in honor of Better Hearing Month. To make it even easier, Dr. Amy Holland and Dr. Angela Byrd are inviting

you to help yourself to a free hearing screening throughout the month of May. Simply call the friendly staff of Montgomery ENT Center and mention this ad to receive a free hearing screening. During your appointment, one of their Doctors of Audiology will check your hearing, explain your results, give detailed information on how to protect your hearing, and inform you of treatment options if necessary. Dr. Holland and Dr. Byrd are determined to eradicate the stigma associated with admitting you have a hearing problem. People are often reluctant

to seek out treatment options, because they don't want their friends or employers to know that they have hearing loss. “Trust me, the people around you know that you have hearing loss long before you admit it to yourself. They are the ones who constantly have to repeat themselves,” said Dr. Holland. Wearing a hearing aid and being able to properly participate in conversation is far less noticeable than missing important information and constantly saying “huh?” Many people believe that wearing hearing aids will make them appear old or less intelligent.

Actually, the opposite is true. Dr. Holland explained: “We are seeing hearing loss in people who are younger and younger. And by seeking out treatment, you are being proactive - treating the loss and protecting the precious hearing you have

Cedar Village celebrates Older Americans Month May is Older Americans Month. This is a tradition dating back to 1963 when we honor the legacies and ongoing contributions of older Americans and support them as they enter the next stage in life. The monthly theme - “Age Strong! Live Long” recognizes the diversity and vitality of today’s older Americans who span three generations and highlights the importance of staying healthy throughout our lives. Older Americans have pioneered new technologies in medicine, communications, and industry while spearheading a cultural revolution that won equal rights for minorities, women, and disabled Americans. Cedar Village is joining communities nationwide in celebrating the month with special activities and events. On May 6, Fran Savard, director of Regulatory Relations, Association of Philanthropic Homes for the Aged (AOPHA) spoke at a Cedar Village Community Education Program on “Health Care Reform: Impact on

Medicare.” Savard touched on the status of Medicare benefits, on the effect of health care reform on individuals living on fixed incomes, and on potential cuts in coverage for seniors. To further commemorate Older Americans

Play it safe with help from Milford Pharmacy You’re truly cared about at Milford Pharmacy & Wellness Center. Not only is the staff focused on treating ailments, but educating their patients about prevention. “This goes back to having a wider scope of practice,” said owner and pharmacist Jeff Hill. “We do more than treat injury, but look at one’s total health, offering education on wellness and prevention.” That’s one reason they were invited to participate in the Clermont County Senior Safety Program, organized by the Clermont County Health District. The focus of this program is injury prevention. Falls are the leading cause of in-home injury and related death among older adults. Every year, an average of nearly 5,000 Americans age 65 and older dies as the result of a fall-related injury. Hill said they’re focused on identifying medications that may increase the chance of falling. “We’re working with the health district on this program to help identify these situations,” Hill explained. “We’re honored to play a role in its design and implementation.” Milford Pharmacy is also helping to educate the public on simple ways to fall-proof the home. Falls are often due to hazards that are easy to overlook, but easy to fix, like

keeping common pathways clear, removing throw rugs, and removing electrical cords from a pathway. Other important things to do in order to prevent falls, according to Hill is to begin a regular exercise program, have your health care provider review your medicines, and have your vision checked. “These are common sense changes anyone can make,” Hill said. “A fall in the home can lead to a broken hip that often leads to a debilitating recovery and admission to nursing agencies and can reduce life expectancy. Doing your best to prevent that is a no brainer.” For helpful mobility and other safety supplies, Milford Pharmacy & Wellness Center is the place to visit. They have everything from canes to traditional walkers to the popular Rollator. They also have knee walkers,

an alternative to crutches, for those who prefer a more comfortable means of mobility after surgery. Milford Pharmacy even offers wheelchair rentals. They also offer lift chairs that “fit hand in glove with fall prevention,” Hill explained. “It affords a great deal of comfort but brings with it a level of assurance that you can be more mobile in a safe way,” he said. Visit www.milfordrx.com and click the link Home Medical Supplies for more helpful information. “This is all a part of our specialized practice that most other pharmacies and big-box environments don’t offer,” Hill explained. There’s also that personalized care. “Tired of store greeters?” Hill asked. “Come in to Milford Pharmacy and meet the store owner for your durable medical equipment needs.”

Cincinnati doctor saving lives of Fibromyalgia patients It’s unbearable. The pain does not stop. You’re tired, you can’t sleep, you can’t concentrate. This is real - it’s Fibromyalgia. According to the Web site www.myfibro.com, about 3.7 million Americans have this chronic syndrome. That is one in every 73 people. Those with this condition suffer so deeply, physically and emotionally, forgetting what it’s like to live life. They’ve been to the doctor, even the chiropractor and nothing, nothing has helped. The suicide rate among those with Fibromyalgia is increased 20-fold. There, however, is hope. “In my 17 years of practice, I’ve never seen the dramatic results I’m seeing, with this new test and treatment program. It’s been amazing,” said Dr. Daren Mazzone of Healing Touch Wellness, a Neurologic Relief

Centre of America facility. Healing Touch Wellness, located at 443 W. Loveland Avenue in the historic district of Loveland, is one of only 180 Neurologic Relief Centers in North America using a new breakthrough testing and treatment that is not only changing the lives of Fibromyalgia patients, but saving their lives. “We’re tapping into the body’s own healing resources to correct the cause of this debilitating syndrome. Our relief test usually alleviates a percentage of your symptoms at the time of testing. Your resulting comfort from the test alone lasts anywhere from minutes to days. This is a very direct way of determining whether or not the treatment can help.” Dr. Mazzone said. The best thing is that with a simple 10-minute test, Dr. Mazzone can tell if the break-

through treatment will work on your condition. The initial consultation and test are free. If the patient tests well, the patient will be scheduled for a full examination where Dr. Mazzone will ultimately determine if he will accept their case. Dr. Mazzone only accepts the cases he feels he can truly help. “Based on prior unsuccessful treatments of their condition we find that patients are usually skeptical, but this program is different from everything else they have seen. We’re finding that as a result of the program patients are healthier and happier,” Dr. Mazzone said. Results have been “miraculous” in conditions such as Fibromyalgia, Parkinson’s, Autism and other complex neurological diseases. Dr. Mazzone’s philosophy is simple yet profound. It is to help as many peo-

According to Mazzone: “We know that most people are looking for and ‘believe in’ a natural solution. We are that solution! I truly believe in changing the world patient by patient.” During the past 17 years, Dr. Mazzone, DC has developed a reputation as being one of the most caring and compassionate doctors in the city. SCUBA diving: try it, you’ll like LOVE it Jim Barrie wants to share his love for SCUBA diving, so he’s letting everyone try it for free. His dive shop, The

Scuba Shack, (www.TheScubaPlace.com ) located in Florence, is offering a free “Try SCUBA Experience” to

anyone interested in diving. “SCUBA diving is not a sport. It’s not a hobby. It’s a lifestyle! We want to expose as many people as we can to this exciting way of life.” Barrie said. The Scuba Shack conducts free one-hour dives every Saturday. Barrie has owned The Scuba Shack for 11 years, and in that time has been told by countless people that they would love to try diving. He knows that if they do, they’ll love it! So he wants to give them the opportunity. All those who would like to try SCUBA diving will be geared-up and go for a dip in The Scuba Shack’s indoor, heated, 10 foot-deep, diver training

pool. The dives are led by The Shack’s certified instructors. Reservations are required, and can be made by calling 859-2831550. The Scuba Shack also offers SCUBA certification training. Through comprehensive classroom and pool training, divers learn proper technique, safety measures, and how to use the equipment. Divers certified at The Scuba Shack are given unlimited training classes at no extra charge. The Shack also provides unlimited access to their pool and use of SCUBA equipment for certification students. Once certified, a diver is

ready to go on one of the shop’s many trips to dive locations in the United States and abroad. In the next 14 months, The Shack will lead trips to locations such as: St. Lucia, Hawaii, Bonaire, Cozumel, Florida, Fiji, and the Bahamas. Pricing varies by destination. Many trips are enjoyable for both divers and non-divers, so the diver can easily bring a spouse or friend. However, trips specifically for divers are noted. “There’s nothing quite like a group trip” said Barrie. “Both divers and non-divers come back with a group of new friends, having seen some of the world’s most beautiful locations” he said.

In fact, some of the volunteers helped to bring the residents to the “new” location - transporting them in buses, and in some cases, their own vehicles! “Many people know our building as the former Our Lady of Mercy

Hospital,” says Mercy St. Theresa Executive Director Debbie Welker. “We hear daily how someone gave birth to their children here or brought someone in for a broken arm or procedure.” After Our Lady of Mercy Hospital closed, the building remained empty for a few years until it was renovated to become the “new” Mercy St. Theresa senior living community. The current building is home to more than 120 residents, including 72 residential care suites and 100 dually certified (Medicare/Medicaid) nursing beds. Over the past few years, Mercy St. Theresa has expanded its therapy department to include more treatment space in order to accommodate the growing number of residents/patients that require a short-term rehabilitative stay following a hospital procedure.

On any given day you will find the community brimming with activity, whether it be at social events, such as the annual Sweetest Day Dance, the craft-making with the “Monday Crafters,” the traditional “all night” bingo event, or a lively game of chair volleyball. “It's what makes Mercy St. Theresa so special,” explains Jeanne Bilyeu, Director of Activities. “We do whatever we can to make our residents feel at home – and part of that is having a great time!” Recently, Mercy St. Theresa added a brand new veranda to accommodate those residents and families that wanted an outdoor area to enjoy the breathtaking view of Mariemont and surrounding community. Through generous donations from local supporters and businesses, the veranda opening was celebrated on

May 12 with a balloon release, refreshments and good company. The celebration also helped recognize National Nursing Home week, and was just one of the many events taking place at Mercy St. Theresa that week. Mercy St. Theresa is a part of Mercy Health Partners, an integrated healthcare delivery system including six hospitals, three health and wellness centers, eight senior living communities, weight management programs, physician offices and much more. Mercy St. Theresa is

offering incentives for their Residential Care suites. For more information on Mercy St. Theresa and the Mercy Circle of Caring, please visit www.emercy.com/seniorliving. window,” said Anna Kramer, of Anderson. “Their decorator designed a valance using two complimentary fabrics that I chose and even added a cute trim at the edge – all for $179!” “I was almost going to settle for readymade window treatments, but they looked like everyone else’s windows and were really a bit skimpy,” said Anna. “Then a friend recommended The Decorators Workroom.
