Making it happen at Cedar Village While April 18-24, 2010, is National Volunteer Week and a time that volunteers are recognized, at Cedar Village, volunteers are appreciated each and every day. More than 250 women, men and junior volunteers give selflessly to ensure that residents have the special services and “extras” that make Cedar Village a warm, family environment. What do volunteers do at Cedar Village? Some of the smiling faces behind the Deli counter in the lobby are volunteers as are all of the lovely ladies who work in, and run, the gift shop. Volunteers help with transportation. They run activities like monthly resident birthday parties and bingo. Some of the volunteers do special programs like cooking with the residents or crossword puzzles – even karaoke. There are volunteers who bring their pets to provide pet therapy and other volunteers who are friendly visitors and spend time getting to know, and connect with, specific residents. In fact, volunteers provided Cedar Village with more than 11,400 hours of service in 2009. According to a study by Independent Sector, volunteer time equates to an average value of $20.25 per hour, so, for Cedar Village that’s a contribution of more than $232,000! Cedar Village’s annual salute to volunteers will be held April 22, 2010. At that time, two exciting new volunteer opportunities will be announced. The first is to be a part of the brand-new Louis and

Dorothea Ginberg Comfort Care program. This new service, designed to offer enhanced pain control and end-of-life services to Cedar Village residents, will have many different roles for volunteers. Volunteers may sit with a resident or family and visit. Some may knit blankets, arrange flowers or other tasks that will enhance the resident’s environment. If that sounds good to you, there is room for additional volunteers. You can apply on the Web site at www.cedarvillage.org or by e-mailing or calling Marcia Westcott, mwestcott@cedarvillage.o rg or 754-3100. The other new pro-

The CedarFit program volunteers will learn simple exercises that they can teach anyone to do in their home, whether that home is in the community or in a facility setting. Exciting new hearing aid design Dr. Amy Holland and Dr. Angela Byrd of Montgomery ENT Center are always striving to offer patients the best hearing aid technology paired with designs that are pleasing to the eye. They are pleased to announce a new technology available to patients with hearing loss. The Live by GN Resound Remote Microphone hearing aid uses a design known as Invisible Open Technology (IOT). This revolutionary design allows for the microphone of the hearing aid to be tucked discreetly into the curve of the outer ear, and the shell of the

aid to be tucked deep into the ear canal. The hearing aid remains virtually invisible while still delivering unparalleled sound quality. The patented microphone placement eliminates the common problem of wind noise and increases the richness of sound that you hear. Many hearing aid users complain that the noise of the wind rushing over the microphones of their hearing aids is overwhelming and makes it impossible to understand the speech around them. The Live Remote Microphone hearing aid eliminates this problem by tucking the microphone

away so that wind cannot rush over them, causing extraneous noise. The design also allows your ear to process sound naturally by taking advantage of the shape of your outer ear. “Our outer ear is shaped in such a way that sound is naturally filtered into our ear canal for optimized sound quality,” reports Dr. Holland. “When a person has hearing loss, this natural filtering is interrupted. “By placing all of the hearing instrument parts in the outer ear and ear canal, the Live Remote Microphone hearing aid takes advantage of the natural filtering system of

our ears and can deliver exceptionally clear sound, while remaining barely visible.” The Audiology Team at Montgomery ENT Center is set up so patients can receive all of their hearing health care services under one roof, with just one visit to the practice. The team includes two Audiologists, Dr. Amy Holland and Dr. Angela Byrd. The team is lead by board certified otolaryngologist, Dr. Mark Grosinger, who founded the practice more than 25 years ago. Jim Barrie wants to share his love for scuba diving, so he’s letting everyone try it for free. His dive shop, The Scuba Shack, (www.TheScubaPlace.com) located in Florence, is offering a free “Try SCUBA Experience” to anyone interested in diving. “Scuba diving is not a sport. It’s not a hobby. It’s a lifestyle! We want to expose as many people as we can to this exciting way of life,” Barrie said. The Scuba Shack conducts free onehour dives every Saturday. Barrie has owned The Scuba Shack for 11 years, and in that time has been told by countless people that they would love to try diving. He knows that if they do, they’ll love it! So he wants to give them the opportunity. All those who would like to try scuba diving will be geared-up and go for a dip in The Scuba Shack’s indoor, heated, 10 foot-deep, diver-training pool. The dives are led by The Shack’s certified instructors. Reservations are required, and can be made by calling 859-283-1550. The Scuba Shack also offers scuba

certification training. Through comprehensive classroom and pool training, divers learn proper technique, safety measures, and how to use the equipment. Divers certified at The Scuba Shack are given unlimited training classes at no extra charge. The Shack also provides unlimited access to their pool and use of scuba equipment for certification students. Once certified, a diver is ready to go on one of the shop’s many trips to dive locations in the United States and abroad. In the next 14 months, The Shack will lead trips to locations such as: St. Lucia, Hawaii, Bonaire, Cozumel, Florida, Fiji, and the Bahamas. Pricing varies by destination. Many trips are enjoyable for both divers and non-divers, so the diver can easily bring a spouse or friend. However, trips specifically for divers are noted. “There’s nothing quite like a group trip,” said Barrie. “Both divers and nondivers come back with a group of new friends, having seen some of the world’s most beautiful locations,” he said.

Hill’s Compounding Pharmacy has the right mix The art of preparing medications dates back to the origins of pharmacy. Over the years, however, this art has become a specialty practice. At Hill’s Compounding Pharmacy, in Milford, they still practice the time proven art of compounding using modern variations of the “mortar and pestle” to prepare unique and individualized medications. “There are times when the manufactured products don’t meet the need of the person, but that person still has a need,” explains owner Jeff Hill. “So we customize to your exact need. There’s no one-size-fits-all here.” Working with your doctor, compounding allows Hill’s pharmacists to customize the strength and dosage form of a medication according to individual needs.

Hormone therapy Structural differences exist between human, and synthetic and animal hormones. In order for a replacement hormone to fully replicate the function of hormones which were originally naturally produced and present in the human body, the chemical structure must exactly match the original. Hill’s compounding specialists work together with patients and prescribers to provide customized hormone replacement therapy that provides the needed hormones in the most appropriate strength and dosage form to meet each person’s specific needs. Close monitoring and medication adjustments are essential.

Skin creams Pain management is essential because even when the underlying disease process is stable, uncontrolled pain prevents patients from working productively, enjoying recreation, or taking pleasure in their usual roles in the family and society. Topical and transdermal creams and gels can be formulated to provide high local concentrations at the site of application, for trigger point application, or

in a base that will allow systemic absorption. Side effects associated with oral administration can often be avoided when medications are used topically. When medications are administered transdermally, they are not absorbed through the gastrointestinal system and do not undergo first-pass through the liver

Veterinary medicine Compounding allows veterinarians to broaden their prescribing abilities and to offer dosage forms that are patient-specific in strength and formulation. Therefore, the goal of compounding for the veterinary patient is to enhance the veterinarian’s ability to treat patients in a more effective and efficient manner. Compounding can make treating animals easier if the pharmacist prepares flavored medications that animals accept readily. Pharmacists Jeff Hill and Jim Bock have more than 60 years of combined experience and can formulate and prepare a medication specifically designed for you. For more information call 8313735 or visit Hill’s Compounding Pharmacy at 931 Highway 28, in Milford or visit www.HillsCompounding.com.

Gentle Dental Care offers gentle touch Imagine going to the dentist and being totally relaxed! Oh, it’s possible at Gentle Dental Care because, for patients who need that extra help to relax, Gentle Dental offers oral conscious sedation. Most people’s fear of the dentist are due to a previous bad experience, explains Treatment/Financial Coordinator Brenda Humphrey. “We’ve heard it all,” she says. “It’s unbelievable that someone has been treated so badly by their dentist. Once they come to our office – a lot different than most – they see that there’s a staff that truly cares about people.” Once people learn they can take care of several years worth of dental care, in just a few visits, while they sleep, “they can’t believe they didn’t find us sooner,” says Brenda. First, Gentle Dental reviews your medical history. If cleared by your MD, you are given a pill to take one hour prior to your dental appointment. You will

need a companion to drive you to and from the dental office. The pill works quickly to create a relaxed state so you will be drowsy when you arrive. During treatment, your vital signs will be monitored while you are in a sleep-like state. You will be able to respond to any given commands or questions, but will not likely recall events while the drug is in effect. This is ideal for the dental phobic patient. Beyond creating an optimal environment for you, sedation dentistry allows Gentle Dental to complete multiple treatments in one appointment. You can fully relax while they improve your smile. “Everybody in the office is professional while also being personable. The whole experience made my first-in-a-decade appointment relaxing and comfortable! Thanks to Dr. Dallmann and her team,” says J. B. or Erlanger. Patient, C.F., of ALexandria,

The Gentle Dental Care team.

agrees: “I was extremely scared and nervous and they managed to make me feel comfortable. I believe I have found a dentist for life. A.R., also of Alexandria, almost didn’t show for an appointment. “I so wanted to turn my car around and not show up for my appointment, but I just knew that I had to go,” A.R. said. “I am really glad that I did because of the staff. Thanks to them – so much – for caring and yes I will

be back for my appointments. I would not change a thing they do in their practice,” Brenda says it’s very rewarding to work at Gentle Dental. “It feels great when you’re able to help someone overcome their fear and get the care they need and deserve,” she says. “From the first time they call, you can hear their fear and then when the work is completed, the ‘thank you’ and the hugs – it’s a great feeling.”

Spring’s harsh weather can damage roofs Even though April showers bring May flowers, the hail and high winds that accompany thunderstorms can damage your roof and cause expensive repairs. Justin Shoemaker, who estimates roof damage for RoofTime, states that if you think your roof has sustained damage, don’t wait, because it won’t get better by itself. “The very best thing you can do if you think you have damage is to call a reputable roofer, who will come out and give you a free estimate,” Shoemaker said. “A good roofer will get up on the roof, not just measure from the ground.
