Encouraging, ensuring your independence Mike Murphy loves his home. Like many people, he’s shared countless memories there with the ones he loves. He can’t imagine ever being forced to give it up. That’s why the Burlington Pharmacy employee is so passionate about helping others in the community remain in their homes. “From a personal standpoint, due to a death in the family, I had to move from my (childhood) home. It is very painful to move away from the home you’ve lived in all your life or for many years,” he said. “That is why it’s so very important to me to provide a person with every

products and services we offer, can help a person maintain their mobility, therefore giving them a strong sense of self value.” Burlington Pharmacy offers stair lifts, a mechanical device for transporting people up and down stairs. A rail is mounted to the treads of the stairs and a chair or standing platform is attached to the rail. “This keeps people from being a prisoner to one floor in their

home,” he said. “It ensures safety and comfort as they move about in their home. It is good especially for those with arthritis, or who have had hip or knee replacements.” Burlington Pharmacy also offers modular ramps, customized, to your home and needs. Ramps offer a simple and convenient solution for wheelchairs and scooters to access steps, vehicles, and raised landings with ease. Vehicle lifts, power wheelchairs, and scooters can also be found in the Burlington Pharmacy showroom - many of which will also be on display in the pharmacy’s booth at the Greater Cincinnati Home and Garden Show. “Without these options many would be forced to move to a smaller home or even a retirement community,” Murphy said. Murphy said he enjoys working at Burlington Pharmacy because he enjoys helping people. Best of all, he said, “we’re a family here - customers included.” “We know our customers,” Murphy explained. “And when you walk in here, it feels friendly. Our showroom is large and welcoming. Restore your health with help from Nie’s Pharmacy Research has long held that there are significant differences between hormones that are natural to humans (Bio-Identical) and synthetic preparations. Structural differences (side chains) that exist between synthetic or animal and human hormones may be responsible for side effects that are experienced when non bio-identical hormones are used. Structural differences exist between human, and synthetic and animal hormones. In order for a replacement hormone to fully replicate the function of hormones which were originally naturally produced and present in the human body, the chemical structure must exactly match the original. There are significant differences between hormones that are natural to humans and synthetic or horse preparations. Side chains can be added to a naturally-occurring hormone to create a synthetic drug that can be patented by a manufacturer. A patented drug can be profitable to mass produce, and therefore a drug company can afford to fund research as to the medication’s use and effectiveness. However, naturallyoccurring substances can not be patented, so scientific studies are less numerous on natural hormones, because medical research is usually funded by drug companies. Natural hormones include estrone (E1), estradiol (E2), progesterone, testosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), and pregnenolone. Our compound-

Kentucky

ing specialists work together with patients and prescribers to provide customized hormone replacement therapy that provides the needed hormones in the most appropriate strength and dosage form to meet each woman’s specific needs. Hormone replacement therapy should be initiated carefully after a woman’s medical and family history has been reviewed. Every woman is unique and will respond to therapy in her own way. Close monitoring and medication adjustments are essential. In addition to appropriate dosing on prescribed hormones, a patient may

have nutrient needs that can affect her overall sense of well being. Other issues such as stress sleep and lifestyle choices can affect the patients over all health. We assess the relationship of the above mentioned parameters as well as relationship of other factors such as thyroid and adrenal health. A Complete Hormone Makeover Consultation will assess these issues and recommend a plan of care that addresses that patient’s needs. Here is what one patient had to say: “My symptoms were severe, ranging from hot flashes that prevented me from sleeping more than

one hour at a time to anxiety, panic attacks and depression. “I was physically, mentally and emotionally exhausted. It took everything in me to make it though the day. I had tried anti-depressants and synthetic hormones which only exacerbated the problem. Running out of options I set an appointment to come in and talk with you about bio-identical hormones. I remember leaving that day scared but I felt that there was hope. “One year later, I am writing to thank you so much for offering bioidentical hormone therapy. I have been impressed with the time you invest in

each of your clients. And how close you’ve worked together with my doctor and me to insure we obtain the correct dosage so that I can maintain therapeutic results. “I appreciate all of the knowledge that you so willingly have passed my way about women’s health issues. I am so thankful that God put you and your staff in my path.Your program has restored my health! Calling today to make an appointment can make be difference between needing a filling vs. a crown or between a root canal and an extraction.” Stop making excuses, too. She uses the latest digital technology from Xrays to charting, giving you the healthiest smile

you can have with lower radiation exposure and conservation of more natural tooth structure. Good oral health is about more than having a beautiful smile – it’s about having good health overall. “The mouth can be a window to the health of your entire body,” Dr. Schussler explained. Inflammation in the mouth from an infected tooth or inflamed gums can have a profound effect on the body, especially for those with diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and those who are pregnant. “It is a known fact that those who have better awareness of their oral health have better aware-

Have uninvited holiday guests? Call Perfection Pest The holidays are a great time for families and friends to come together and celebrate. However, the holidays are also a time of risk for uninvited

pests – from bed bugs, spiders, mice and others – invading and being brought into one’s home. “Mice, rodents, spiders and other pests find their

way into homes by hiding in boxes of holiday decorations that have been stored in attics, basements and garages since last season,” says Tim Leatherman, president of

Get energy savings while you can for 2010 Time is running out to take advantage of the 2010 tax credit for making your home more energy efficient. According to the experts at Roof Time there is still time for a free energy attic check-up, and to get any needed work completed before the time is up. Insulating your attic with Owens Corning insulation qualifies you for a tax credit up to a $1,500 until the Dec. 31 deadline. Using a thermal image camera (like the ones the cable TV ghost hunters use) and digital ther-

mometers, Roof Times’ estimators can pinpoint the problem areas that hide under your roof. A New Roof Time is an Owens Corning Preferred Contractor and has obtained the added certification as a TOP OF THE HOUSE roofer-attic insulator (with only three locally.) They are members of the Better Business Bureau and have an A+ rating on Angie’s List (they have won the Super Service Award every year since 2006). A free Roof Time quote includes options for making the existing roof venti-

lation system meet or exceeds FHA specifications; increases the attic insulation to the Department of Energy recommended level of R-60, and a radiant barrier that reduces the attic’s temperature by as much as 50 degrees every day. Using these techniques Roof Time knows that homeowners can extend their roof’s life, make their home quieter and more comfortable, and reduce monthly utility bills by 20 to 30 percent. Owens Corning’s fiberglass insulation material is clean, non-allergenic and

resistant to mold, and will never settle. The material is treated with an aloe to prevent skin irritation. It will leave your attic clean and your home much more comfortable, and never get that old “wet newspaper smell” in your home the way cellulose insulation often does. An average insulation job costs less than $1,200, so by combining the tax credit and the savings from smaller energy bills, insulation can pay for itself in two years! According to the D.O.E. 25 percent of a home’s energy is lost

through the attic/roof, compared to only 10 percent through walls. Insulating your attic is the least expensive way to cut energy costs and provides the largest return. In addition to savings, you’ll prolong the life of your air conditioner and furnace. You’ll also have a more comfortable home that has increased in value, should you ever want to sell. Visit www.newrooftime.com or call Missy at 513-753-TIME (8463) to get a free inspection of your roof, attic insulation, siding or gutter system!

Montessori education made affordable When Dr. Maria Montessori opened her first early learning center she was asked to start a school for children in a housing project in Rome. The theme of the Montessori education has been well established as an affective teaching strategy. However, though affective this method of teaching has only been open to the affluent and has not been offered to children in mid-to-low economic areas. That was, until recently. The Children Inc. Montessori Early Learning Academy, located in Covington, is one of the only full-day, year round, 3-STAR rated and nationally accredited center in the state of Children Inc. Kentucky. This certified Montessori provides curand emotional developriculum focus on social ment through a weekly

music program called Growing Sound.

“It is our belief that children should be offered

extraordinary learning opportunities to help them succeed in school and life,” said Executive Director of Children Inc. Rick Hulefeld. “The basis for success is learning the basic social and emotional skills.” The academy is affordable for all families and fees are based on a sliding scale. The Montessori curriculum concentrates on five areas of critical learning and development sensorial, practical life skills, language, math and cultural. Children’s knowledge of the core areas builds each year and by the time they reach the end of kindergarten they have a firm understanding of the material. For more information, contact Director of Marketing Tracy Clauss at 431-2075, ext. 126, or tclauss@childreninc.org.

PEST from page 10 can be a problem. Perfection K9 Services (a part of Perfection) uses Beddy the Bed Bug Dog to use her “scentsability” to find bed bugs. See their Website at www.perfectionk9services.com for information. To prevent other pests from coming into the home, Leatherman recommends that homeowners keep holiday decorations – especially items like dried foliage, potpourri and Indian corn – in airtight containers during off-seasons. Be sure to unpack decorations outside and inspect them carefully. Similar caution should be taken to inspect live foliage that is brought indoors during the holidays, including Christmas trees, wreaths and garlands that can harbor pests. Call Perfection Pest Control at 525-8560 if you need help with any pest this holiday season.

Urban style in suburban Anderson Memories Thanks to Terri Smith and her new fashion forward boutique, urban style can now be found in suburban Anderson Township. Urban Chick opened at 6740 Clough Pike in August and features an eclectic mix of clothes, jewelry, handbags and scarves from a variety of today’s hottest designers. “I was looking to create a space where I would want to shop. I wanted it to have that downtown feel but be in the suburbs,” Smith said. “We have new merchandise all the time that reflects whatever is in style that season. We are excited to bring some New York City style to Cincinnati.” Urban Chick is completely and utterly for and about women, of all ages, in fact! It’s the perfect stop during a girl’s night out. Prices are affordable and fair, you can find anything from a lovely necklace for $10 to a hip jacket for $150. Smith is also the owner of True Colors salon in Anderson and has enjoyed her experience of being a business owner in the community for the

should last forever You’ve probably got them in your home right now. Boxes in the back of your closet containing a lifetime of memories. VHS or other video cassettes, maybe even reels of 8mm film, collecting dust. You’re trying to remember those great family moments of the kids, those parties, great vacations. Home movie film dates back to the 1930s. It was a fantastic innovation that first promoted the idea of family home movies. In the 1970s the idea advanced with the introduction of analog video tape and the popularity of home movies skyrocketed. As the equipment became obsolete these family memories were put

away. With no convenient way to play them, those great family moments became a distant memory. Converting those treasured memories to Digital DVD is the solution. You know how easy it is to watch a DVD. Imagine sharing those priceless memories with your children, relatives, and friends on DVD Video. Your memories should last forever. Old home movies don’t stand a chance. Revive them on DVD video now, in time for the Holidays. Even the healthiest among us can wind up with sore, tired feet at the end of a long day leading up to the holidays. “Eight out of 10 American adults have experienced foot pain due to uncomfortable or ill-fitting shoes, according to the American Podiatric Association (APMA),” says Brendan Leonard of Health Enterprises, makers of therapeutic products. “Compound uncomfortable shoes with

FOOT from page 15 other skin-softening treatments. A pedicure can be a one-size-fits-all gift, and is appropriate for everyone from your best friend to your grandmother. Even guys can enjoy the treat, as many salons and spas now offer pedicures designed to pamper men’s feet. Foot massage – A foot rub can be the ultimate way to decompress after a stressful and tiring day. Or, you can start your day with an invigorating massage. You can give the gift of a good foot massage in several ways, such as a gift certificate to a spa. Or, make the good feelings last even longer by giving a home massager. Lovely lotions – It doesn’t take much for overworked, tired feet to become dry, cracked and uncomfortable. Nearly three quarters of Americans suffer from dry, rough, cracked or irritated skin, the APMA reports. More than any other part of the body, the foot cries out for soothing moisture. You can find quality lotions, polishers and foot scrubs in supermarkets, drug stores and department stores, or from a plethora of online resources. Look for ones that offer optimum moisturization and an aroma that

mimic the recipient’s favorite scent – many people find peppermint and vanilla particularly pleasing for foot lotions. Insoles for the soul – Sadly, style and comfort aren’t always in lockstep with each other, and we often wear shoes that look good but don’t feel good on our feet. In fact, the APMA cites poorly fitted, uncomfortable shoes as a major source of foot pain for many people. Fortunately, a host of high-tech shoe inserts has made it easier to ease the discomfort caused by shoes. Insoles can help cushion and support the foot while easing chafing in problem areas. You can even find varieties with gel inside or ridges that purport to massage feet while the wearer walks. You’ll need to know the recipient’s shoe size and in what type of shoe he or she will be wearing the inserts. While your foot-friendly gift probably can’t alleviate all the frustrations of the holidays, it can help recipients feel better about their feet. And once their feet feel good, maybe untangling that ball of last year’s holiday lights won’t seem quite so stressful. Courtesy of ARAcontent
