Educate your child early on proper oral care The earlier the better. That’s Dr. Tiffany BullerSchussler’s philosophy on children and dentistry. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that a child start seeing the dentist very early, often as early as the teeth start erupting. While Dr. Buller-Schussler does not see infants or very young toddlers, she sees children in her office as early as age three. “It’s very important to get the child accustomed to the office at an early age so that they become less afraid and become comfortable with regular dental care as they get older. They will also be

more calm when they come for their visits.” The most important reason, however, she explained is to screen for any early childhood decay or disorders of the teeth and jaws. A simple screening appointment can detect dental caries, missing permanent teeth, defects of the teeth and jaws and other things. Dental caries are considered a childhood disease and the incidence is once again on the rise. Part of the problem is consumption of juices, soft drinks, and bottled water. Even more devastating is the fact that often parents and children are not educated in proper oral care.

Dr. Tiffany Buller-Schussler.

Once teeth are in the mouth, they should be cleaned. Parents should use a wash cloth or gauze to wipe an infant’s teeth until they have enough teeth to use a brush. A toddler, Dr. BullerSchussler said, should have their own toothbrush to be used with the help of a parent and can use paste with fluoride once they are old enough to spit. It’s also necessary to be educated on the importance of a proper diet. Parents should monitor the consumption of juices and soft drinks, even diluting them 50-50 with water. If this is done when the child first starts drinking juices, they won’t notice a difference. Once teeth are in, if a child still uses a bottle before bed, it should be filled with water if possible. After adult molars are in place sealants should be placed over them to

protect the permanent teeth and prevent further decay. “Dental diseases can become very serious, especially in children,” said Dr. Buller-Schussler. “They result in pain, loss of school days, infection, loss of the baby tooth and can lead to damage to the permanent teeth. In rare cases hospitalization, or even death can occur if left untreated.” After an initial visit with Dr. Buller-Schussler, she can refer parents to a Specialist if she feels it is necessary. Pediatric dentists, she said, are vital partners. An initial visit for a youngster includes familiarizing them with the office. “We make sure they are comfortable and happy so that they will become good dental patients for the rest of their lives,” she said. Dr. Buller-Schussler has been practicing for 12 years, but has been interested in dentistry since she was 9 years old. Her focus of practice is on education and restoration of the mouth to full form and function so that her patients can maintain their teeth and prevent the need for extensive future treatment. February is Children’s Dental Health Month. Schedule an appointment today to start your child on a lifetime of good dental health. Burlington Pharmacy offers women outstanding service Karen Murphy and Melissa Morris are used to giving and receiving lot’s of hugs. They’re used to sharing tears as well. “No one cries here alone,” said Murphy, a 15year certified mastectomy fitter at Burlington Pharmacy. Breast cancer is the most common cancer occurring in women (excluding cancers of the skin) and the second most common cause of death from cancer in women after lung cancer. Mastectomy fitting is the practice of addressing medical conditions of the upper extremities and post-mastectomy surgical outcomes. Pursuant to a physician’s order, a mastectomy fitter measures a patient and properly fits, dispenses and adjusts external breast prostheses, bras and related supplies. Trained and certified mastectomy fitters are integral to the physical and emotional well-being of patients, providing instruction and training on how to properly use and maintain post-mastectomy devices. The loss of a woman’s breasts to cancer can affect her self-esteem, her sex drive, and just how she feels about herself as a woman. “The goal is to give them their self-worth back,” Murphy said. “It’s not that they just have a lower self-esteem, they feel different and we bring them back to their self and make them feel whole again.” These women are comforted and treated with respect. Improve, don’t move When it’s time to replace a roof or add insulation to your home, the project can be a stressful, time-consuming chore, but if you do your homework it can be rewarding in the end. Your home is a big investment and in the new “improve not move”

economy, choosing the right contractor is more important than ever. One local contractor that has been helping raise property values through the addition of attic insulation and beautiful energy efficient dimensional shingle roofs is A New Roof Time.

L I V I N G

A New Roof Time began in 1995, when Ricky Feltner started a small family business that operated out of his home. By 1999, Preferred Roofing’s four office staff (which included a daughter, a son and son-in-law) had earned a ranking in the Top 100 Contractors in America, with sales in excess of $2 million. Ricky passed away at the end of 1999, and the

n k y. c o m

company struggled to carry on without his dynamic leadership. Today Ricky’s legacy has been preserved by no less than five roofing contractors that were once part of his vision, all successfully operating their own companies using the same principles and ideals he established over 15 years ago. At Roof Time, Missy is still answering the calls (even at nights and weekends) and Ricky’s grandson, Justin, works as a project estimator. Greg Lykins and Terry Littleton run their two certified roof crews. Roof Time is a true family-owned and operated business with deep community roots; over 15 year’s business experience, with three generations now serving Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. A New Roof Time is a wise choice for savvy homeowners looking for an honest and skilled contractor. They have earned the prestigious Angie’s List service award every year since 2006 and their Aplus rating as members of the Better Business Bureau means homeowners can trust them to do everything they promise. Roof Time is also one of only three contractors in the Tristate that are Owens Corning certified as Top of the House insulation experts. But the real story is in their referrals. “It is our No. 1 priority to always do the right thing by our customers,” said JD Shoemaker of A New Roof Time. The entire crew is required to always be upto-date on the newest

products, technology and codes. The company uses qualified estimators that do not work on commission. This ensures that the customer always receives an honest estimate. Roof Time provides free written estimates for customers and will explain what they can do to fix their home’s issues. A New Roof Time’s services include new roofs and roof repairs on all types of roofs – slate, metal, asbestos, rubber and mobile homes. Their attic insulation is the best in the city. They can also replace, clean or repair gutters and box gutters. They provide insurance estimates and FHA roof inspections, as well. Roof Time is a leader in their industry, utilizing the latest in technology. Their estimators can use satellite measurement software to offer “to the inch measurements” for “to the penny pricing.” They own thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint hidden leaks and decay and iPhones to solve problems on the job in real time. Roof Time employees are fully insured and attend annual training seminars and conferences. They still remember and practice today what founder Ricky preached so long ago: “Most homeowners won’t know good roofing; but they know good work and clean-up when they see it.” Roof Time staff will always respect your property, landscaping and possessions, leaving no trace of a mess behind. When there isn’t enough time call Regal Maid Let’s face it – most of us, if not all of us, have a full plate these days. Most of our plates, in fact, runneth over! There is so little time left in the day/week to accomplish all the things that are on our to-do lists, including cleaning our homes. Because of the busy schedules we all seem to keep and for several other reasons, many people have turned to Regal Maid and have been doing so for 25 years. This family-owned local business has achieved this milestone and outlasted much competition in the area by sticking with their core philosophy of “treating the employees right first and always focusing on the internal customer service they provide first, and the external customer service falls at a close second,” said Andy Venneman, owner. According to Andy, the key to

12

giving their clients a great experience and the clean home or room every time is to make sure the employees are happy with their positions and responsibilities. That positive momentum being a focus in turn translates into how the employees operate and perform at the clients’ homes or businesses. This way of running the business has kept Regal Maid providing excellent service and has kept some clients using the service since 1986. Regal Maid has also been continuously involved in the community through donations, providing local employment opportunities and being involved with local schools. The navy blue, fuel efficient cars that the cleaning service uses are a familiar sight to many residents in Northern Kentucky and are often on the road as many of

us drive to work. Regal Maid services businesses as well as residents. Often, there is a misconception about having to be “wealthy” to use a cleaning service, but Regal Maid has been spreading the word that their customers call for many different reasons and have many different needs and income levels. Several calls are made by people who find that they are simply too busy to keep up with the task of cleaning nooks and crannies on a monthly or weekly basis, or that find that a particular room in their home is a high traffic area or even an ignored area that is simply too much to keep up with. Clients call to get help because they physically cannot do the work that needs to be done, because perhaps they are sick or elderly or their loved ones call to

help in that situation. Regal Maid caters to each customer’s particular needs, whether big or small, one time or weekly, and this flexible service has been a huge part in getting to their 25th anniversary. Many customers also give the gift of a cleaner home as a gift to moms on Mother’s Day, birthday gifts for friends and loved ones, wedding gifts for the couples home, Valentine’s Day to give their special one a day off from chores, etc., in the way of gift certificates which are easily purchased online or by phone. Swimming’s a great way to stay active – whether in the pool or the ocean – but it can take a toll on your locks. Whatever your activities, it’s important to use an eco-friendly shampoo – after all, a good choice for the environment can be a good choice for you, too. If your tresses are stressed out, be sure to give them a deep conditioning treatment, too. Whether your inspiration is getting healthy or a beauty boost, exercise is the best way to do it. Taking advantage of the opportunity to work out, regardless of the season, with these thoughts in mind will help you look your best, throughout the year.

Ronald B. Jones will take care of your needs The old statement that the only thing certain in life is death and taxes rings true for anyone facing old age or illness, or even younger people who are caretakers for elderly parents. Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home in Ludlow, Ky., in business for 75 years, knows how to help with difficult decisions. “We can help plan a funeral that takes care of all the wishes of the family,” said Ronald Jones, owner of the facility, and lifelong resident of Ludlow. “We give every person who comes here personal attention, which has over the years built a trust between our clients and ourselves. The personal attention is what I believe sets us apart,” he said. Pre-planning has

become one of the most popular outreach programs for funeral homes, because more people want to specify exactly what they want when they die. “People realize it is like a gift to their children, to make the decisions before they have to,” explained Jones. “That way the children know exactly what their parents want. I’ve had children come in to look over the specifications their parents set up beforehand, and they are surprised, and told us they are so glad their parents picked things out, because they wouldn’t have chosen the same things,” he said. Jones said since they have been in business so long, they know all the hospitals, churches and cemeteries, so they are

able to make all arrangements when a person dies, to take some of the strain off the rest of the family, who are grieving, and sometimes in shock. “We do everything for the family,” said Jones. “We are open seven days a week, 24 hours a day, so we are never closed. We make all the arrangements, and take care of the flowers, so the family can rest assured they are in capable hands.” Cremation has become a more viable choice, and does not have a stigma attached anymore. Visitation has changed, over the years, and now approximately 30 percent of people want to have the visitation and funeral all in one day. “One thing we stress to the families is that when you have a visitation, the

great majority of people come to see the living people,” explained Jones. “So if your mom or dad has outlived most of their friends, you still have the visitation for the people who want to come and see you to express their sorrow for your loss. Many families don’t take that into consideration,” he said. Jones likes his business because he can be helpful

to people in distress, and that is very important to him. To learn more about Ronald B. Jones Funeral home, go to www.ronaldbjones.com. “We pride ourselves on personal attention, and our large facility has a homelike atmosphere, which is very important at stressful times,” Jones said. “You can also call us at 431-0072.”
