The SI Pool Care team.
S.I. Pools offers quality service Quality service is what S.I. Pool Care is all about according to owner Sam Ionna. For 19 years he and his family has been faithfully serving area pool owners including installation, specializing in fiberglass pools, renovations, standard repairs and maintenance, as well as deck or patio work around the pool. For the last seven years they’ve also operated a retail store. Sam, a retired teacher, first got the idea to go into the pool business while working a summer job managing swim clubs in Northern Kentucky. As things would break and he’d try to get them repaired, he’d end up having to wait two weeks for service! So, he started doing the repairs himself. After about five years he decided it was time to go into business for himself. “I thought there must be others who share the need for this service and it’s worked out very well,” he explained.
They specialize in fiberglass pools. With 70 premier models, they can find you a pool you’ll love and they offer full packages to get the job finished from beginning to end. With a fiberglass pool you don’t have to worry about deterioration, a liner replacement, or losing color after time. With a 25-year warranty, they can provide you with their professional fiberglass resurfacing. Most other companies will only provide you with a oneyear warranty with their plaster resurfacing. Compared to plaster, fiberglass is a non-porous surface which helps prevent algae. This unique process is much stronger than conventional surfaces. It won't crack like concrete, wrinkle and tear like liners, or rust and leak like steal walls. For more information on S.I. Pool Care call 331-4110 or visit www.sipoolcare.com.

Hadley’s Carpet brother and sister team.
Spruce up your family’s space with new flooring from Hadley’s Carpet Changing up your flooring can bring a certain freshness to your home or office. Not only can new flooring spruce up a boring or dreary space, but it can add value to a home or work space. The only question is … where should you go for that new carpet or flooring? You don’t want to spend a fortune, but you still want to get the best carpet or tile or whatever you’re looking for. Hadley’s Carpet is just the place. Hadley’s is a family-owned business that has been in operation for 19 years and is now managed by brother and sister, Craig and Toya. “My dad, Al Hadley, has been in the flooring business 49 plus years,” Toya said. “He owned United Carpet Outlet in Amelia, Ohio, for 20 years. In 1992, he started Hadley’s Carpet in Elsmere and then sold United Carpet to some of his employees,” she said. “Since dad has retired my brother, Craig, and I have been operating the business. We have essentially been in the flooring business all our lives,” said Toya. The company works with both residential and commercial spaces. Toya Hadley believes her company can offer what some of the bigger carpet flooring companies don’t. “We really want to help out the customer,” Hadley says. “We are very service-oriented and we just want to give the customer everything we can. We really work with the customers to figure out

what they need and want. The bigger stores just won’t do that. “Our prices are a lot lower than our competitors too.” Not only are the prices comparable to or lower than the more well known counterparts, Hadley’s keeps a huge stock of products, everything from carpeting, vinyl, ceramics and laminates. They also have numerous samples, in countless colors. Hadley’s carries the three major carpet manufacturers such as Shaw, Mohawk and Beaulieu plus some smaller mills and distributors. Hadley is part of the buying group of Floor Covering Associates (FCA), and has buying power comparable to larger flooring companies. “We get better pricing from the manufacturers,” Toya said. “And we can pass it along to the customer, which is great.” The employees at Hadley’s are experienced, as well. The crew has been with the business for years. They can help the customer choose the correct flooring that will meet their needs, as well as give advice in choosing color and style. Hadley’s is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Saturday 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. They are located at 4401 Dixie Highway in Elsmere, Ky. Recognizing the importance of a support system

t is estimated that nearly 24 million Americans have diabetes, including an estimated 5.7 million who remain undiagnosed. The diagnosis of diabetes – a condition in which the body does not adequately produce and/or properly use insulin, the hormone needed to transport glucose (sugar) from the blood into the cells of the body for energy – might sound overwhelming. However, managing your diabetes may be made easier with a support system of family and friends. Controlling blood sugar is a 24-hour-a-day job, and a strong support system is important. This experience led Paul and Mira to partner with sanofi-aventis U.S. in launching “Diabetes CoStars,” a new awareness program designed not only to encourage people living with diabetes to inform themselves about diabetes treatments and lifestyle choices, but also

One of Mira’s biggest roles in supporting her father includes encouraging a healthy diet. “Living with diabetes, I know how important it is to have a support system in place,” said Paul. “As part of our Italian family heritage, we love cooking meals together and Mira joins me in preparing low-carbohydrate pasta and salads full of diabetes-friendly ingredients, such as fresh vegetables and lean meats,” he said.

Connection between oral health and total body health and wellness Most people think going to a dentist is about cleaning your teeth or having a tooth filled or pulled. However, research is showing that there is a distinct connection between oral health and your overall health. “I don’t think many patients realize that periodontal disease can increase the risk of cardiovascular problems substantially,” said Dr.

Tiffany Buller-Schussler of Hebron. There is now considerable research available linking the health of the oral cavity with health of the entire body. Citing a 2005 study published at Colgate.com: “One theory is that the inflammatory proteins and the bacteria in the periodontal tissue enter the blood stream and cause various effects on the cardiovascular system.”

The article pointed out that the same bacteria present in the mouth of patients with periodontitis (gum disease) was also shown to be present in the thickening of the blood vessels, a condition associated with the development of heart disease. “If you have high risk factors for cardio-vascular Dr. Tiffany Buller-Schussler problems, it’s even more Schussler. For example, if you are diabetic, a mouth infection can disrupt your blood-sugar levels and make your diabetes harder to control. Studies show that about 35 percent of the US adult population has some form of periodontal disease (gum disease) and close to 50 percent have moderate to severe gingivitis, an early stage form of gum disease. The inflammation of the gums caused by bacteria affects your overall health, according to Dr. Buller-Schussler. “It’s a shame that most medical insurance companies don’t recognize the effect on your overall health when you have an infection in your mouth over a period of years, but serious medical issues can arise if these infections aren’t treated,” said Dr. Buller-Schussler. The best way to avoid

or lessen the effects of periodontal disease is to see a dentist regularly, and to keep your mouth and teeth healthy. When your mouth is the gateway to the rest of your body, doesn’t it make sense to keep it as healthy as possible? Respect and understanding are everything Dr. Tara Dallmann and her team continue to come across people that have had a bad experience at the dentist. “The fear our patients experience is real and the embarrassment that accompanies their fear can be paralyzing. For this very reason we have changed the way we do dentistry in our office,” explained Dr. Dallmann, of Gentle Dental Care in Independence. To make the visit less stressful, the team schedules fewer patients than your typical office. This allows time for the most fearful patients, which have put off going to the dentist until it is an emergency. It has taken everything they have to pick up the phone, and they want to get them in as soon as possible. Getting the patients

EIGHT-STEP FUNCTION Fashion facelift for your kitchen and bathroom Minor updates in your kitchen and bathroom can be easy, quick, inexpensive and make a major impact.
W
hy not give the two rooms that you spend the most time in – the kitchen and bathroom – a function and fashion facelift? Luckily, minor updates that are easy, quick and inexpensive can make a major impact. Try some of these simple suggestions from real do-it-yourselfers, and you can make your kitchen and bath more stylish, safe, organized and enjoyable – all in eight easy steps. 1. One of the easiest and most affordable ways to make over a bathroom is to update it with new accessories. With a wide variety of designs and finishes – from traditional to modern – accessories such as towel bars, towel rings, robe hooks, towel bar hooks and shelves help get you more organized, while making a dramatic style statement. And don’t stop in the bath, towel bars and robe hooks are
12

ideal kitchen additions to keep pot holders and towels close at hand. 2. Next, install new bathroom faucets. With nearly limitless finish, style and function options available, the simple change of a faucet can transform a room in only minutes. 3. It’s one of life’s constants: Toilet paper always runs out. But changing the roll doesn’t have to involve a spring-loaded bar flying across the room. Depending on your decorating tastes, choose from an innovative pivoting paper holder that features a bar you simply lift up to replace the roll or a Europeanstyled design that features an open end for easy roll replacement. Either way, it’ll encourage everyone to lend a hand and change the roll. 4. Add style and space in the

shower in minutes with a curved shower rod from Moen. Originally seen only in upscale hotels, this unique product adds up to 7 more inches of elbow room in the shower. Plus, new S-shaped shower rod hooks snap right onto the shower rod, offering convenient access to hang a variety of items – from towels and robes, to loofahs and shaving kits.
towels and washcloths.
5. When it comes to decking the walls in the kitchen or bath, there’s no need for expensive art. Try adding your personal touch with framed photos of family or friends to share experiences or keep memories alive.
8. While style is always a concern, bathroom safety should be, too. In the bath, add grab bars or hand grips. In the kitchen, make sure your smoke detectors are working properly and keep a fire extinguisher under the sink for easy access.
6. Looking for storage? Need a place to keep your Merlot or champagne? Wine racks are the perfect answer. But they can even be functional in the bath. Choose a rack in a finish to match the rest of your bath accessories and fill it with rolled hand
7. Turn a boring, plain bathroom mirror into a work of art by adding Mirrorscapes Mirror Frames. Mirrorscapes transform plate-glass mirrors into style statements in a matter of minutes. Available in a variety of styles, these easy-to-install frames create a beautifully coordinated, custom-designed look.

The challenge: Spring cleaning Are you one of the countless individuals feeling the urge to “Spring Clean,” promising yourself that this is your year to actually get it done? You are not alone. While most of us have the best intentions and want to give our homes a thorough cleansing, we simply can’t, don’t, or are unable to do so. Spring cleaning tends to go undone for many of us for reasons ranging from being too busy, too overwhelmed by the idea, pulled in too many directions at home, not physically capable of doing the work, etc. Regal Maid Cleaning Services wants to change that and give your home or particular problem rooms the “Regal clean treatment” that’s desperately needed. Owner Andy Venneman says:

“We are encouraging anyone who hasn’t had the opportunity to experience our services first hand yet, to call us. If you’re an exhausted busy mom, call us. You deserve to have the fresh, clean slate, de-cluttered home you are longing for.” “There are common myths and misconceptions about the idea of having a cleaning service come into your home. Eliminate termites with Perfection Pest Spring rolls around and we are all ready to get out of the house but unbeknownst to most homeowners there is something just as eager to get into the house – termites. Perfection Pest Control has been preventing, treating and eliminating termites for Northern Kentucky and Greater Cincinnati residents for years. Perfection provides quality service at a reasonable cost for not just termites but ants, bed bugs, roaches, fleas and rats.
This time of year is especially bad for termites though because they exist practically everywhere in the soil and as the ground starts to unfreeze from the winter, termites become more active. Termites attack wood in homes made of any material and can enter through a crack as small as 1/64th of an inch. By the time you know the termites are there, the damage is already done, and that is why the best approach is to be proactive.
Perfection’s Termite Protection Service creates an invisible treatment zone around your property and gives you peace of mind that your house will not be invaded. It will cost a homeowner much less money for preventative treatment than if they have to do all the home repairs caused by termites. Unfortunately, even a carefully inspected home can get termites because there are so many unseen areas that they can infest.
Perfection uses numerous types of effective treatments including Altriset the first and only liquid termiticide to be classified as reduced-risk under the U.S. EPA reduced-risk program. Perfection offers one- to 10-year warranties on their treatments, with payment plans available. For information on Perfection Pest Control’s services visit their website at www.perfectionpest. com or call for an inspection at 859-525-8560.

Pride Cheer Academy proud Evan Sayres has pride in the 150 students that attend Pride Cheer Academy, which is inside the Midwest Sports Complex at 25 Cavalier Blvd. in Florence, Ky. The school that specializes in scholastic cheerleading has made pride into an acronym; standing for personal, responsibility, integrity, determination, and excellence. “We basically have three programs,” said Head Coach Sayres. “We have an introduction to cheerleading, recreational cheerleading, and career cheerleading. It really depends on what the child wants to do. We’re not about making ourselves look good. We want each individual child to look good,
and achieve their goals and dreams.” Children can start basic motor skill development as young as 2 years old with a Mommy and Me program, and the academy has adult programs for tumbling and yoga. Sayres stresses that they do not train All Star Teams, but instead train mainly middle and high school students in the arena that they will perform, basketball courts and football fields. “Our training motto is Get it, Got it, Perfect it,” stated Sayres. “We help students become successful at what they want to do.” For more information about classes, the number for the school is 8165867(JUMP).
Foster care needs you St Joseph Orphanage/ Family Ties Foster Care, a non-profit agency located at 221 Main Street in Florence, has been serving the Northern Kentucky area for many years. “Changing lives everyday is what we do, and we want people to know they can, too,“ said Cathy Morris, Licensing Specialist. We want to get the word out that we are here, and we really need you to help us help children.” Cathy Morris says many people are reluctant to foster a child, for reasons that usually have no basis in fact.
People can be married or single, they can live in a house or an apartment, and they can work full time. Cathy urges anyone who is interested to call her, and ask any questions they have about what they have heard about foster care. Parents should know they will receive a per diem amount for caring for a child, and each child will have a medical card. There will be an open house Wednesday, March 23, at 221 Main Street, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., where people can visit with Cathy, and find out how they can help.
“There is absolutely no pressure,“ Cathy said. “We have 12 foster homes in Northern Kentucky. We work with the Cabinet for Health and Family Services so that if a foster child is available for adoption, we help facilitate that process. “We offer classes to qualify people as foster parents, and we will walk you through every step. You will find out, the rewards are great in fostering a child.” For more information, the phone number for St Joseph/Family Ties Foster Care is 647-7220, and the website is www.sjokids.org.

NKMC grounded in individuality, love for learning Considering the roots of a Montessori education are grounded in individuality, independence and a love for learning, it seems only appropriate that the Northern Kentucky Montessori (NKMC) was organically started 44 years ago in a private home. Now located in Crescent Springs in a bright, welcoming facility, the school has 50 preschool students ranging in age from 3 to 6 years old. Classrooms are comprised of mixed-age groups guided by degreed and certified teachers who embrace the Montessori Philosophy. Each classroom has two teachers, and often a student teacher from Xavier University’s Montessori Teacher Education Program. In addition, NKMC’s French teacher is Montessori trained. Although a Montessori class-

room is highly structured with many activities, children are given the option to choose which activity is most appealing to them. This type of program encourages decision making and efficient time management. NKMC’s curriculum includes practical and sensorial exercises, math, language, art, science, music, human cultures, geography and French. Because NKMC is a non-profit institution, faculty and staff are able to stay focused and committed to their Montessori mission. NKMC is a great alternative for parents that want their children to receive a quality education but are not quite satisfied with other public or parochial school options. And with this realization, NKMC felt it was a natural progression to expand their pro-

gram, starting this fall, to include a lower elementary alternative. “Parents were so pleased with the results of Montessori preschool that they naturally wanted to see their children continue their education under this philosophy. Their options were limited so we decided to offer a Montessori elementary program for children in grade levels 1 through 3. In addition, as the lower elementary program enrollment grows, we will add the upper elementary program to meet the needs of those children who are coming up through the ranks and will eventually need grades 4 through 6,” said Executive Director Julia Preziosi. The elementary program will continue to teach children in a “freedom with limits” environment. The mixed-age-group set-

ting allows children to work at their cognitive level, not just their chronological level and enables them to continue on their individual and optimal course of growth and development. Detailed observation allows the teacher to work with each child as an individual, meeting that child wherever they may be cognitively, socially, emotionally and physically. The elementary program will be lead by Ana Noll who just completed her Master’s of Education at Xavier University and has been educated her entire life in a Montessori setting. NKMC is also offering their popular Summer Camp, which runs for six weeks from June 6 through July 22 (skipping the

NKMC from page 17 week of July 4). This year’s theme focuses on all aspects of food including where it is grown, nutrition and cooking. The camp will take a field trip to a local organic farm as well as to a food processing plant. Students will also participate in cultural cooking activities where they will learn to prepare food from other cultures.

Adventure awaits at Dagaz Acres Review written by Editor Melissa Stewart I’ve always wondered what it’d be like to fly like a bird. I finally got my chance to experience this dream when I visited Dagaz Acres and took flight on their Zipline Adventure Course. I had heard of zip lines in resort destinations and other countries like Costa Rica – who knew we had a state-of-theart zip line course 45 minutes away? There’s no need to travel out of our area to experience this one-of-a-kind thrill. It was amazing. Strapped safely in a secure body harness, I soared above like a mighty eagle. The breeze carried me across as the beauty of the land – scenic valleys and ravines – impressed upon my memory. This is an adventure I certainly will not forget. Zip lining is safe and fantastic fun for families, reunions, Scout troupes, churches and groups of all ages. It is that “something different” you’ve been looking for and it’s right here in the Tristate area. Dagaz is located in Rising Sun, Ind. I admit, I was a little nervous when I geared up and hiked to the first zip line. I wasn’t quite sure what I had gotten myself into. However, with the friendly, expert guides, I felt completely safe – I knew I was in good hands. That first zip, ah, there’s nothing quite like the freedom you experience being suspended in mid air, gliding across a beautiful and peaceful environment. It’s like time stops suddenly and you’re mind is clear. You’re able to take in the view around you and you realize just what it’s like to be one with nature. Dagaz Acres opened in March 2008. The adventure includes: • Five dual zip lines spanning 23 acres • Two canopy zip lines and a Burma Bridge • Multi-element high ropes challenge course

The dream for the business began after owner Patrick Noonan experienced zip lining and “fell in love.” He and his family now operate Dagaz. The word Dagaz is derived from an ancient Nordic rune which means “transformational breakthrough change.” “Our love for the outdoors and a strong background in educating and motivating people to action inspired our family to start a business that offers an exhilarating outdoor eco-adventure,” explained Patrick. “This is an adventure that allows you to let go of daily stress and commune with nature. Whether alone or with a group of friends, you will return to the ‘real’ world with fresh perspectives and incentives.” This was certainly true for me. Not only did I have a great time bonding with nature, I feel extremely accomplished. I did something I wasn’t quite sure I could do. It feels good to not only try, but to succeed. Strengthening communities, nurturing children The YMCA of Greater Cincinnati has always been committed to strengthening our communities and nurturing our children. For generations they have been providing quality summer camps that promote youth development and help keep our children safe. And this year’s line-up of camps does not disappoint. As always, the camps are geared for youth to first and foremost have fun, but there is also a strong focus on academics. Many studies have shown that most students lose about two months of grade-level equivalency in mathematical computation and reading skills over the summer months. The Y is determined to provide academically enriched camps that will help eliminate this summer learning loss. Child safety is a top priority at every camp. Counselors and staff members are certified in first aid, CPR, AED, and recognizing and preventing child abuse. Certified lifeguards are always on duty at YMCA pools and programs are supervised by individuals certified in each activity. So once your child arrives, you can rest assured he or she is in good hands. There are YMCA’s located throughout the neighborhoods of Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky and many of them have a full schedule of camps for youth ages 3 to 15. Many locations offer a day camp option, and these camps are offered either on a weekly basis or for the entire summer with different fun and educational themes each week. Below is a sample of some of the camps available at each branch. For a full list of camps, you can visit www.MyY.org. Blue Ash offers a weekly pre-school camp with different themes, a teen camp, a counselor-in-training camp, and

Lindner and Melrose YMCAs have a wide variety of sports camps including basketball, flag football, volleyball, and cheerleading. Gamble-Nippert YMCA in Westwood offers a weekly pre-school camp and like many of the other Ys, they have a preand post-camp program, which is a great resource for working parents. M.E. Lyons YMCA on Clough Pike offers a Counselor-inTraining camp for 14- and 15year-olds. R.E. Lindner and Powel Crosley Jr. in Cincinnati and R.C. Durr in Burlington all offer a pre-

school and a teen camp. Registration at each branch began at the beginning of March. The Y would like every youth to have the opportunity to experience summer camp. They offer financial scholarships and accept state assistance to qualifying families. In the spirit of promoting academics and following their Summer Camp theme – It’s the Summer to Discover – the Y is also offering Camp S.M.A.R.T, which focuses on Science, Math, Art, Reading, and Team-Building. All lesson plans at Camp S.M.A.R.T. align to academic content standards and incorporate educational best practices. Sessions are taught by licensed educators and trained program staff. This entire program is geared especially toward combating summer learning loss. A new weekly S.M.A.R.T. Camp will run from July 11 through Aug. 5 and have different themes including science, space, technology, healthy lifestyle choices, and global cultures. For more information on this
camp or to register, contact Angie Okuda at 513-363-4474 or aokuda@myy.org. For the overnight camper, the YMCA’s Camp Ernst gives campers the opportunity to enjoy canoeing, horseback riding, rope courses and challenges, drama, arts and crafts, and so much more. All of this excitement on a 365-acre nature preserve in Burlington, Ky. Visit www.myycamp.org to learn more about Camp Ernst and their exciting Adventure Trips to locations like Mammoth Cave, Greenbrier River, Utah and more! YMCA Camp Programs offer children plenty of positive outlets to focus their energies – field games, swimming, team building, arts and crafts – their staff makes it a priority to include everyone in activities and provides positive reinforcement, making youth feel welcome and important. For more detailed information on each camp or to register you can stop in to your local branch or visit the Y’s website at www.MyY.org.
