How to reduce tooth decay Which of these two acts do you think will cause a cavity the fastest, if done on a daily basis? 1. Chugging 2 liters of a “sugar drink” in 20 minutes (once per day). 2. Sipping 12 ounces of a “sugar drink” over a sixhour period of time. Most people believe that the amount of sugar in a drink is the greatest factor in the speed of tooth decay. As it turns out, the greatest factor in how fast you or your child will cause a cavity the fastest is the amount of time that the sugar is on the teeth. The good news is that your saliva is actually a tool that can help recover the damage that “sugar drinks” cause to teeth. However, it takes 1 to 2 hours after the drink is

consumed for your saliva to do its job. So, if you consume another sugary drink within the 1 to 2 hours of the last drink, then you have canceled out all the help that your saliva had given your teeth, and a cavity starts to grow. What can you do to reduce your chances of tooth decay? The answer is simple if you maintain a good habit of brushing and flossing twice a day. All you have to do is eliminate sugary foods and drinks from your diet!

In today’s society, the realistic answer for a person already in good health would be to limit your sugar intake to one or two 20 minute sessions of sugar in-take per day. Make sure you look at the labels on many of the foods and drinks that you normally consume and you may be surprised at how much sugar is in them. Sodas, sports drinks, energy drinks and candies, to name a few, are all enemies to your teeth. If you cannot eliminate sugar from your diet, then try to limit the time throughout the day that you consume sugary drinks, snacks and other foods. At Mortenson Family Dental, we care about our patients’ dental health because we believe everyone deserves a healthy smile! Call 525-7586 to set up an appointment.

Be yourown advocate: Get the information you

need

Getting a diagnosis of any kind of cancer can be frightening. One of the first things many patients do is learn everything they can about their illness, including what options for disease management and treatment are available.

Kentucky

Be your own advocate. Talk to your doctor to stay informed about your disease.

This can be challenging if a person’s cancer is considered rare, which is defined by the National Institutes of Health as a cancer that affects fewer than 200,000 people. Patients with rare cancers are more likely than those with more common cancers to say they lack access to credible and reliable information, causing them to feel alone in dealing with their disease, according to a national survey. For many like newlywed Carolina Williams, getting the right diagnosis and information about her GIST, a rare and lifethreatening cancer, was important to both her and her family. One day, about a year into her marriage, Williams became extremely bloated and experienced terrible stomach pains which came on suddenly. Her husband knew something was seriously wrong when he found her unconscious on the floor from pain. He immediately brought her to the emergency room. There a physician conducted a CAT scan which revealed a large mass in her stomach that was diagnosed as a benign cyst. After

Thursday July 21, 2011

four days of medical procedures to drain the cyst, a 7-pound solid tumor was removed and tested for cancer. “Once my doctor removed the tumor, I wanted to make sure that the hospital did the proper tests to check if the mass was cancerous,” said Williams. “I wasn’t going to leave it up to chance so I requested that an oncologist perform the tests. I am glad that I pushed for this, because I was soon diagnosed with a gastrointestinal stromal tumor, or GIST, which is considered a rare form of cancer. I was then able to get the information I needed to help understand my disease,” she said. When it comes to helping manage their own disease and acting as their own advocate, patients should seek out resources both through their physicians and reliable online websites. For some rare cancers, like GIST, there are a number of online resources, including www.GISTTheFactsInfo.c om, an educational site for GIST patients and their families that was developed by Novartis Oncology.

n k y. c o m

“It is so important for people with cancer, especially those with a rare cancer like me, to act as their own advocate when it comes to getting the right diagnosis, disease information and ultimately the right disease management plan,” said Williams. “Working with my doctor and learning more about my disease has helped me focus on the other important things in my life, including enjoying time with my husband and taking care of my son. They mean the world to me.”

About Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors (GIST) GIST is a rare, lifethreatening cancer of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Most cases of GIST develop in the stomach or small bowel. They often do not cause any specific symptoms, making it difficult to diagnose and to treat. The exact number of people diagnosed with GIST each year is not known. In the U.S. alone, the incidence of GIST is estimated to be up to 6,000 new cases each year. For more information about GIST, go to www. GISTTheFactsInfo.com.

Stop cyberbullying Cyberbullying, the bullying of a person through the use of an electronic device such as a computer or cell phone, is becoming a growing national problem. Anyone can be a victim of cyberbullying, but students are frequent targets. From fake Facebook pages, to the posting of embarrassing videos and photos, to Kick a Ginger Day (harassing red-headed people based on a 2005 episode of “South Park”), more than 20 percent of today’s U.S. students, ages 10 to 18, report being a victim of cyberbullying (26 percent for girls versus 16 percent for boys). Because of a number of highly publicized cases of cyberbullying – including most recently, the suicide of a Rutgers University freshman whose roommate posted a video of the student having sex in his dorm room – colleges, school districts, law enforcement and state legislatures are taking action to address cyberbullying. More than two dozen states have specifically enacted legislation or updated statutes to address the growing problem of cyberbullying, according to FindLaw.com, the leading online resource for legal information. Most new laws mandate that school districts enact policies involving cyberbullying, and take steps to suspend or expel students who engage in it. Here are some tips from FindLaw.com on what parents can do now to prevent cyberbullying, and what to do if you suspect that your child is being singled out by cyberbullies:

• Ask about friends or other kids. Start the conversation by asking your child if he has heard about other kids at school who have been victimized. • Watch for signs. Does your child seem withdrawn? Reluctant to use some forms of technology? Maybe depressed? These are generalizations, but if you’ve noticed any changes in your child’s behavior, he or she may be the victim of technology torment. • Set boundaries. It’s critical to talk to your child about cyberbullying – what it is and what to do if your child feels threatened. In addition, parents should set clear boundaries about your young person’s use of technology. Clearly communicate your expectations for responsible use of technology and that, while you respect your child’s privacy, you intend to monitor it. • School policy. Find out if your school has a policy about cyberbullying. • Safe place. Cyberbullying is very real and it is possible that your student could at some point be one of its victims. Ask your school to create a safe place or resource for kids to report cyberbullying – such as a voicemail tip line – and ask your school to invite speakers to address the issue.

Summertime is Roof Time for your home Five tips to selecting the right roofer Last month Cincinnati officially passed Seattle, in rainfall, by 1.7 inches. With more than 9 inches of rain in June alone, we have more than doubled our average rainfall amounts of 12.33 inches and are now at 25.03 inches of rain for the year. The heavy rains combined with numerous high winds this past spring have local roofers working double to fix all the damage. Even though the Cincinnati BBB lists over 600 roofers locally; the simple fact remains that there are more roofs to be done than there are good

roofers to do them! The Better Business Bureau lists information and an A-F grading system on all 600 roofers, which a consumer can access for free. Tip No. 1 is checking with the BBB before inviting a contractor to bid your home can help separate the skilled roofers from the guys that roof. Log onto the BBB website and use the link to request a free quote from a roofer whose profile catches your eye. Remember; there are no licenses required in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky to install roof-

ing. Anyone with a phone and a truck can advertise their roof “services.” Justin Shoemaker is a project estimator with A New Roof Time. His company has an A+ rating at the BBB and he offers Tip No. 2 for finding the right roofer for your job. “Check with Angie’s List,” he said. “For less than an evening out, homeowners can join and share feedback on roofers, other tradesmen, as well as doctors, dentists and even veterinarians.” Angie’s List has more than 20,000 members in the Tristate and lets members file reports and A-F

grades on everyone they do business with. Shoemaker loves to work with Angie’s List members because of what he says is their high level of interest in getting it right when hiring a contractor.

“Roof Time has an A+ rating and have won Angie’s Super Service Award every year since 2007, which is something that only one other roofer has done can! Members appreciate the experience, training and skill we bring to their home’s projects. I love working on their roofs,” he said. The Roof Time staff also offers three more different tips for finding the right roofer for your project. Tip No. 3 is to get an address where the roof company’s crew is working, go sit on the street and watch them work. In this case, what you see is (probably) what you get. If a roof crew looks sloppy, rough or makes you uncomfortable, you will know before bringing them to your home. Tip No. 4 is to call a local supply house (look under roof supply in the phone book) and ask for their top roofer who buys material and pays their bill. Most roofers work on a job completion basis, no money down. This means that if a homeowner is unhappy or has an issue, ROOF see page 13

ROOF from page 10 the roofer must work to resolve it to get a payment. Roofers who pay their bills at their suppliers are installing roofs that homeowners like and are paying for. That is the roofer you want to hire for your house. Finally, Tip No. 5 is to look for a roofer that is involved with social media. For example, A New Roof Time has almost a thousand fans on their Facebook page, tweets daily updates to followers, and has Internet-only deals on foursquare and web malls, for check-ins at their showroom in Northern Kentucky. The advantage to homeowners is that social messages are conducted in real time, without regard to nights, weekends, and holidays. Leaks can occur anytime; being able to reach out to a roofer when it happens is comforting. SUPPORT from page 4

Matracia Contracting Inc. has been solving concrete problems since 1995 by using a process called concrete lifting, which raises a concrete slab back to its original position. It is the economical alternative to tearing out and replacing concrete. Your concrete is lifted by drilling holes into the surface of the concrete slab, and pumping a cementbased grout material through the holes. This fills any voids and displaces any standing water under the slab that may have occurred by settling or burrowing rodents. Workers continue pumping until enough material is pumped under
