Do you have benefits remaining? At Mortenson Family Dental your dental health is our No. 1 priority. With that in mind, the team wants to be sure that their patients maximize their insurance benefits. Many individuals who are paying for dental insurance do no realize that their insurance plan provides coverage up to a certain dollar amount annually. Consequently, some patients are not scheduling the dental treatment they need, deserve and have insurance to cover. Those dollars cannot be carried over year to year. The bottom line: What the patient does not use, they lose! Clearly, it pays in many ways to schedule the preventative care or other dental treatment that you need. The team is here to help you secure the insurance coverage available to you on every dental procedure you schedule.

It’s hard to believe, but there is only seven weeks left in 2010 and the team recommends calling now to schedule any dental treatment that you may be in need of as appointment times are booking up quickly. Whether it be a new patient exam and cleaning or that crown you have been putting off, if you have the insurance benefits available it makes sense to take advantage of it. Give them a call today at 5257586, and they’ll make sure you are in excellent dental health. They look forward to seeing you again if you are an existing patient and welcome you with open arms to our practice if you are someone currently looking for a great dentist in the area. They look forward to sharing some of the many innovative means we now have available to provide you with superior dental health care.

Medical spa the perfect gift Get ready for the holidays! Elements has gift certificates available so you can give the most lovely gift – the gift of beauty. Anyone who has ever noticed a wrinkle, or excessive brown spots, or veins showing in their legs will be happy to know about Elements, a medical spa located at 25 Town Center Boulevard in Crestview Hills. The elegant salon is staffed with two nurse practitioners, and one registered nurse, as well as the Medical Director Dr. Ruth Hussey. “Physician directed services were developed to aid the patient in choices of procedures to achieve maximum health, beauty, and overall fitness,” Dr. Hussey explained. “Our goal is to promote radiant skin, prevent damage, and enhance one’s outward appearance, thus improving the patient’s outlook on life,”

Dr. Ruth Hussey and Mary Jo Meek, office manager for Elements.

she said. The spa specializes in Matrix, which is a very deep peel done with radio frequency waves, so that the peel occurs from the inside out. They also do leg vein removal, hair removal, chemical peels, skin rejuvenation, botox, and skin tightening. Clinics that perform these non-surgical, noninvasive procedures are very popular on the East and West coasts, as well as the South, but are just beginning to appear in this area. “With our procedures, patients can gain years of beautiful skin without

having to undergo more drastic means,” said Dr. Hussey. “Because the procedures are non-invasive, patients have very little down time.” Mary Jo Meek, office manager for the spa, thinks the ELOS technology they use makes a difference. “I feel we are kind of a one stop for easy beauty,” she said. “It is a simple method of maintaining beauty, and people appreciate that.” Bridal packages, and other specials are available, and consultations are free. With all of the severe storm damage the Tristate has endured over the past year, many homeowners are still in need of roof attention to get them safely through this winter. Many homeowners worry about whether or not they can have a new roof installed in the cold. The experts at Roof Time have been installing roof systems for the past 15 years, and have some specific tips for getting a good roof in the winter. Could you? According to Roof Time staff, you can roof in cold weather but the quality of the finished roof can be affected by wet or snowy shingles. Roof Time only allows their crews to install on dry days. Many shingle makers have specific rules about temperatures. In general, the magic number is 26 degrees. It may be possible to install roofs in colder temperatures but professionals won’t attempt it. Shingle roofs can actually shatter if nailed in colder temperatures, allowing winds to blow them off. Shingle makers don’t restrict their warranties,

based solely on installation temperatures of 26 to 100 degrees. This means that your new 30-year dimensional shingle, installed over the winter, has the exact warranty as a roof installed at any other time of the year. All shingles need to undergo thermal sealing, which can take longer in the cold. Shingles may appear uneven or “lumpy” according to Missy Shoemaker at Roof Time, for a few days after being installed when it’s colder, but the nails and the sealing strips provide protection until the shingle can “relax.” According to one of Cincinnati’s most experienced (32 years) crew foreman, Greg Lykens at Roof Time, the No. 1 tip is that no roofing guns should be used when temperatures are less than 30 degrees. “At Roof Time, we hand nail all the winter installations, at no additional charge to homeowners,” said Lykins. All steep slope roofers have to be careful that they don’t damage the underlayment which can become brittle in cold

weather. Only 30-pound felt or synthetic underlayments should be used and all underlayments should be installed using cap nails, not staples. On a roof tear-off, insist that only as much roofing as can be newly shingled in the same day be attempted. Too many homeowners have had their interior ceilings ruined by surprise winter storms that tarps and felt alone, could not withstand. Winter in the Tristate tests your roof in ways unlike any other time of year. The most common problem in cold weather is ice dams. An ice dam forms when snow melts and runs down the roof only to hit ice at the gutter line. The trapped water cannot make it into the gutters and leaks into the house walls. Roof Time uses a product called “ice and water shield” together with aluminum dripedge flashing, to prevent ice dams from damaging your home and causing leaks. This method provides

customers. Should you? Two reasons to consider a winter roof job; need and price. Some homeowners simply have roofs in such bad shape that they cannot wait until spring. Looking to save as much money as possible on a new roof? Homeowners who have roofs installed during the winter get the best price of the year. For the same reason that you get faster roof service in the winter, you also get a lower price than during the warmer months. According to Justin Shoemaker of Roof Time, their estimators are instructed to discount a winter installation by as much as 20 percent over

n k y. c o m

the same type of spring job! Roof Time wants to keep their crews busy and offers steep discounts to avoid lay-offs. By March, roofers begin to get busy again, so their goal over the winter is to hang onto their skilled labor force. Professional roofers offer the same labor warranty for a roof installed during winter, as a roof installed any other time of year. For example, Roof Time offers a long term labor warranty in accordance with the Midwest Roofing Contractors Association guidelines, without regard to the time of the installation. For a free rooftop inspection, complete with color digital pictures and

a written record of the findings, contact A New Roof Time in Cincinnati at 513-753-TIME and in Northern Kentucky at 859-341-TIME sidebar Quick roof tips Shingle Roof Damage: Water leaks from ice and snow are caused by interior heat from the house. Water from ice melting on the roof is trapped and creates an ice dam on the roof, gutters and downspouts. The water then takes the path of least resistance under the roof system, or sideways and through flashings, which were not designed to handle this kind of moisture. When this happens, interior water damage can occur. Skylights: Skylights covered with ice and snow may cause leaking because of the “weep holes” are covered. Internal condensation can’t escape, causing water. Have the snow and ice removed from around the skylight. Make sure anyone walking on your roof is aware of existing skylights, so they don’t damage them if they are buried by snow. Roof Repairs: When you spot leaks or water marks on the walls or ceiling of your home, the damage is already done. Some roof repair operations are relatively inexpensive; nationally, the cost for asphalt shingle roof repair is about $575. When ice damage is large enough to warrant roof replacement, Americans pay an average of around $6,000 to install a new asphalt roof.

The holidays are a great time for families and friends to come together and celebrate. However, the holidays are also a time of risk for uninvited pests – from bed bugs, spiders, mice and others – invading and being brought into one’s home. “Mice, rodents, spiders and other pests find their way into homes by hiding in boxes of holiday decorations that have been stored in attics, basements and garages since last season,” said Tim Leatherman, president of Perfection Pest Control. “Bed bugs can be introduced by unwitting travelers, furniture, or other infested items. Bed bugs

are excellent hitchhikers and hiders,” he said. Bed bugs have been big news this year. From offices to schools to homes, they are being found everywhere. Finding them can be a problem. Perfection K9 Services (a part of Perfection) uses Beddy the Bed Bug Dog to use her “scentsability” to find bed bugs. See the website at www.perfectionk9services.com for information. To prevent other pests from coming into the home, Leatherman recommends that homeowners keep holiday decorations – especially items like dried foliage, potpourri and

great gift, given in a way that tells the recipient how much he or she is valued, respected and wished well, is the essence of the holiday spirit.

Decades ago, when the rhythm of life seemed more sedate, gift-givers probably had more time to invest in considering a gift and shopping for it. Today’s hectic pace, however, can make gift giving a challenge, even for the most dedicated giver. You can recapture the grace and thoughtfulness of a bygone era this holiday season with a few tips: • Food is a classic holiday

gift. It can be personal (such as the recipient’s favorite holiday cookies), or broad enough in appeal to satisfy a group with varying tastes (such as a box of chocolates for a family or office mates). • A gift is a warm and touching way to say “thank you.” The holidays are a time for

celebration, but also to express gratitude – to those you love and also to those with whom you enjoy a professional relationship, whether it’s the baby sitter or a client. Thank-you gifts should be planned in advance to allow yourself plenty of time to find just the SECRETS see page 11

Kentucky

L A S T SECRETS from page 10 right, thoughtful gift. Tailor your thank-you gift according to the relationship you share with the recipient. Something homemade might delight your child’s teacher, while a business colleague would appreciate something light-hearted and surefire, like Melting Snowman cookies. • Play the thoughtful host and ensure your guest room is well stocked for the holidays. In addition to all the necessities, don’t overlook the niceties, which should include a modest yet cherished token that guests can enjoy while they visit, or take with them when they depart. Decades ago, Grandma might have set a decorative tin, filled with homemade cookies, in the guest room for visitors to enjoy throughout their stay. Modern hosts might present some indulgent butter toffee for guests to savor. • Be a helpful guest. Grandma would never have thought of arriving at a party empty handed

during the holidays. You can improve upon that classic thoughtfulness by sending food gifts ahead of time, rather than bombarding your host with armloads of stuff when you walk through the door. A dramatic red velvet cake will be warmly welcomed as a kind treat for your hosts and their family to enjoy while they prepare for their party. And they’ll anticipate your visit all the more as they enjoy the fruits of your thoughtfulness. • Teach children the joys of giving. Involve children in your holiday gift-giving preparations, from writing the shopping list to wrapping and presenting presents. Encourage them to remember by name those who deserve special thanks at the holidays, from neighbors and baby sitters to grandparents and teachers. Teaching children about giving reminds them there’s more to the holidays than just getting presents themselves.

The best Christmas… ever You awaken to the sounds of the “wild” parrots in the swaying palm trees. As you step off your porch, you spy the numerous other colorful, tropical birds amid the lush foliage surrounding the gently flowing stream in front of your cottage. Down the path – two quick turns – and you’re passing the lounge chairs and umbrellas around the crystal clear water of the swimming pool. A few more steps and the azure blue water of the Caribbean comes into view directly in front of you. Turn right and you’re in

the spectacular outdoor dining room overlooking the sea, where both old and new friends are waiting with warm greetings and hot coffee. Following a good breakfast and great camaraderie, you leave your table and head down the walkway to the waiting boat where more friends welcome you aboard. Ten minutes later, you’re underway to enjoy the thrill of “Flying without wings” while you “visit” some of the most fascinating creatures – in the most beautiful scenery – imaginable.

years. They closed their location in Burlignton in March, but reopened in Oakbrook Market Place in Burlington this September, at the same time as Baja Salon. Owner Sue credits God for this “wonderful blessing.” She hopes that new and returning customers alike will find the store to be a great blessing, as well. Stop in today for unique gifts that you will never be able to find in a chain store. For more information call 8170731.

Baja Salon at new location Five years ago Barbara Terrell and Janet Eisenmenger set out on a great journey opening Baja Salon with the help of clients and the ladies who work with them. “I’ve been told how clients are just lifted when they come in here,” explained Barbara. “Of course you’re in business to make a profit, but helping others is what it’s really all about,” she said.

Baja Salon, now located at 6092 Limaburg Road, Burlington, is a full service hair salon that offers massage therapy as well as hair pieces. The new location is wonderful! “You feel like you’re in a close-knit neighborhood when you pull into Oakbrook Market Place,” Barbara said. “The other businesses feel like neighbors and we help one another, especially Susan

and Steve of That Special Gift,” she said. Remember Baja Salon for a little self-pampering or special gift for someone. Barbara and Janet would like to thank all their clients who’ve made the business a success. They also pray that God will bless everyone and the country in 2011. For more information, including on joining the Baja team, call 586-2252.
