Burlington Pharmacy provides alternatives Burlington Pharmacy Health Care has provided answers and advice for patients and their caretakers for more than 34 years, and for the last six years, owners Steve Mueller and Angie Gambrell have added pharmaceutical compounding to the services they offer to their customers. “The pharmaceutical tradition is rooted in compounding,” said Mueller, president and CEO of the company, as well as the pharmacist. “With changes in medicine necessary to living a longer life, there is a need for medicine to be more individualized to the patient, exactly as it was before World War II, although we have more knowledge now.” Although there were some drugs that were produced in great supply during the war, like sulfa, penicillin and morphine, once the war ended technology took over and companies started to mass produce drugs in order to make them more readily available. “However, what we are finding is that over time, mass-produced medicine doesn’t work on a lot of people because everyone is unique, and has a slightly different body,” explained Mueller. “Suppose you have high blood pressure and the medicine you are on is not keeping the blood pressure under control. The doctor might double the dose, to see how it works, because that is the dosage in each pill. But maybe you only need one and a half, or one and a quarter dose to keep your blood

pressure where you need it to be. If you come in to Burlington Pharmacy, we can discuss your medications, and see what alternatives are available, then discuss with your doctor what actual dosage will work for you.”

All of the compounds used in the on site apothecary are FDA approved. Only one other pharmacy in Northern Kentucky, and several in Cincinnati, are qualified to compound the chemicals to tailor the prescribed medicine to the patient, although there are others across the country, and the practice is gaining in popularity. “We belong to Professional Compounding Centers of America, a group of pharmacies who banded together to underline our credibility and give our customers a greater sense of security,” said Mueller. “Although we have always offered compounding, having a

professional organization behind us, as well as FDA approved ingredients, lends support with both patients and doctors.” Currently Mueller does compounding in hormone, pain and thyroid drugs, for people and for animals, as he works with area veterinarians to provide the correct dosage of drugs for their patients. Burlington Pharmacy, located on Northbend Road, is well renowned for providing walkers, wheelchairs, canes, prostheses and other needs of all patients, as well as over the counter drugs, shoes and stockings for diabetics, and braces for almost any kind of muscle

or arthritic strain. But many people don’t realize that the same store they have gone to for all their medical needs and advice also can tailor their medicines. “Even though we have been compounding, and we tell people that, I’m not sure people know what compounding is,” stated Mueller. “When you think of it as tailoring the medicine you need to what your body can tolerate, you can make the medicine work for you better, and you won’t have as many side effects, which can happen with even a little too much medicine.”

How to get a custom closet on a do-ityourself budget

Both fashion and budget-conscious Americans alike are taking better care of their clothing and other possessions, starting with how they store them. But if you haven’t been reading today’s most popular home and style magazines, sneaking a peak inside your neighbor’s closets, or househunting lately, you might not have noticed: Closets have evolved from clumsy and non-functional to downright fabulous.

Or maybe you’ve envied the spacious, custom closets characteristic of luxury homes, but haven’t had thousands of dollars to plunk down on a professional closet makeover.

In either case, you probably need a closet solution. That’s why manufacturers of closet organization systems have been busy developing new, do-it-yourself home storage solutions ranging from low-end, rackand-wire plug-ins to handsome furniture-style systems in white or wood-toned melamine and even solid wood. Where to start creating a custom closet on a do-ityourself budget? First, determine your skill level. Do you need a professional? Probably not. Many closet systems can be installed in a weekend by anyone of average skill level. Brands such as Home Options offer websites with pre-existing templates and online design tools that make closet planning easy.

Next, measure your space. Determine the width, height and depth and write them down. Is your closet a reach-in, walk-in, or are you creating it from freestanding space? Have high ceilings? Add a shelf to store items overhead. When planning, consider designating 50 percent of your closet space for lowhanging clothes, 25 percent for longer clothes, and 25 percent for drawers and shelves. Then, take inventory of your stuff and make adjustments to meet your personal needs.

Use a tower unit to separate his space from hers and incorporate shelves and drawers. Use pant racks to organize 12 pairs of pants in a compact space while keeping them smooth and pressed. Use shelves for organizing folded sweaters so they keep their proper form. Raise shoes off the floor. Look for shoe cubbies that comfortably hold two shoes, not just one. Shoe cubbies are also ideal for stowing away evening bags, belts and other personal items. Courtesy of ARAcontent

Scuba diving... It’s like flying without wings When people think of scuba diving, many places come to mind – Fiji, Hawaii, the Cayman Islands, St. Lucia, the Bahamas, the Red Sea, Galapagos and Australia. But what those same people may not realize is that every weekend, from June through October, hundreds of Cincinnati residents head out for a day or two of scuba diving at local recreational dive sites. “Local scuba diving may not be diving in a tropical paradise, but it does allow certified scuba divers to enjoy a few of the things they love about diving, such as spending

Why didn't roof last? It is a common complaint: Roof shingles that fail too soon, leaving frustrated homeowners asking; why didn’t it last? Roof Time has the answer. According to Justin Shoemaker, a company estimator, it has to do with far more than the shingles. “Shingles today are well made, but depend on what I call the ‘Energy Trilogy.’ he explains. “It’s due to the ventilation, insulation and radiation, not being properly balanced.” The problem starts with unbalanced ventilation, not enough attic insulation, and no radiation barrier. Each year the team at the Mortenson Family Dental Office in Florence, Kentucky holds a festival to celebrate you… the outstanding patients and members of the community. This event is not only for existing patients but also for those of you out there who have been thinking that its time to get back in the habit of taking care of your teeth. family’s dental needs, or maybe even a little fearful due to a previous bad experience. Regardless of the reason, we invite everyone to come out. And trust me…there will be no teeth cleaning, numbing or drilling involved! The “Patient Appreciation Day” was originally created by our founder, Dr. Wayne Mortenson himself. He and his family decided to dedicate a day to celebrate all of our wonderful patients. They would have a day at the family farm full of good food, games and of course good company (all our wonderful patients). Over the

years as the company, or as we like to call it “family,” has grown it has become so large that they no longer have enough room! Now each individual office has a day of their own to do exactly the same thing in their own community. The Mortenson Family Dental Florence Office “Patient Appreciation Day” will be held on Sept. 18, 2010, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and boy, are you in for a treat! There will be lots of food like hot dogs, popcorn and cotton candy so make sure to bring your appetite. For the kiddies they will have lots of fun like a bouncy house, lots of games and even a little bit of magic! They didn’t forget about the grown-ups either!
