Stress-freeways to serve after- school

nutritious

snacks

After a long day at the chalkboard and on the playground, kids can come home from school hungry and ready for an afterschool snack. Studies show that children snack an average of three times a day, but they still aren’t getting adequate levels of vitamins and minerals. The challenge for parents is to find a treat kids will want to eat that’s not filled with empty calories. Kids’ diets are low in vitamin D, calcium, potassium and dietary fiber, according to the American Dietetic Association. And over the past decade, children’s eating patterns have been markedly low in vitamins A, C and E. Most moms know that if left to their own devices, children will almost always go for sweet indulgences first. In fact, cookies are the No. 1 snack item eaten by kids today. So, can moms reward kids after a tough day at school with treats they’ll actually want to eat while fueling healthy development? The answer is yes. And it helps to plan ahead. Here are some helpful tips that can have a positive impact on kids’ after-school snack choices.

Make nutritious treats accessible To help parents with busy afterschool schedules, look for convenient snacks that can be easily taken from the cupboard or refrigerator and brought on-the-go. Having snacks at their fingertips helps encourage kids to make better choices. For example, when you come home from the grocery store, use sandwich bags to prepack

single servings of things like grapes, cheese, crackers and carrots to make them easy to grab and go in an instant. For a sweet alternative, make your own trail mix using their favorite cereal, chocolate chips, mini marshmallows or peanuts.

Pack in nutrients One key to success is to modify kids’ favorite foods by pumping up the nutritional value, according to Mike Bloom, vice president of marketing for Suncore Products. For example, his company recently introduced a new line of cookies, WhoNu? Nutrition Rich Cookies, created to look and taste like familiar family favorites, while packing more than 20 essential vitamins and minerals, plus dietary fiber.

Create tasty options Take familiar favorite treats and make them even tastier for kids. For instance, parents can make small changes to beloved treats using simple recipes like a frozen yogurt sandwich. Scoop half a cup of your favorite flavor of low-fat frozen yogurt between two Crispy Chocolate Chip WhoNu? Cookies. Freeze until firm and serve.

filling kids up with a heavy, calorie-filled treat can spoil their appetites. Space snacks out appropriately, and look for treats packed with fiber that will keep their stomachs full without ruining dinner. Allow more than one chef in the kitchen Let kids’ creativity soar using their plate as a canvas. Offering a variety of flavorful treats they’ve helped create fends off boredom. Allow kids to play with their food with this fun recipe:

PB&J ‘Sushi’ Trim the crust off a slice of whole wheat bread and spread peanut butter and jelly over the bread. Roll and cut into one-inch sections with a butter knife. Give your child a pair of chopsticks to add some international flair. To see more after-school snack recipes that taste great and are packed with vitamins and minerals, visit www.whonucookies.com.

Timing is everything Know your children’s schedules. A snack can help ward off hunger, but

joints

If your arm goes numb and your speech is slurred, you know you need to seek immediate medical attention. When you nick yourself shaving, you know you can deal with it yourself. But for the vast number of maladies in between, it can be difficult to know when to go to the doctor and when to deal with it on your own. One of the most difficult situations in which you need to make the “home care vs. professional care” decision may be when something affects your joints. The joints do some important work for the

Kentucky

tions to help lubricate the joint. As a last resort, surgery to realign or completely replace a joint may be an option. Complete joint replacement is now available for the knee, shoulder, hip and ankle.

When to get help for painful

Motion is lotion

human body, and figuring out when things will get better on their own and when you may have a more serious problem is not easy.

When to seek help William Ungureit, clinical director of the physician assistant training program at South University in Tampa, Fla., says there are some important signs that will tell you when to seek professional care. “If the joint is warm to the touch and swollen, seek immediate help,” Ungureit says. “Those are signs of a possible infection, something that won’t get better on its own.” Likewise, if you know that the joint pain is the result of an injury such as a fall, put an ice pack on the injury and seek help

right away. This type of injury will usually be accompanied by swelling and the inability to bear weight. Otherwise, painful joints often can be treated at home with over-thecounter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or naproxen sodium. And what about ice and heat? “Cold therapy (ice) can be used for chronic injuries, such as pain after running,” says Ungureit. “Heat therapy is recommended for injuries that have no inflammation or swelling. Heat is ideal for sore, stiff, nagging muscle or joint pain.” If you decide to treat the pain at home, you still need to see your primary care physician if the pain lasts more than two weeks. Your physician may offer prescription pain relievers or other treatment.

Thursday Sept. 15, 2011

n k y. c o m

Chronic joint pain Treatment for chronic joint pain may be more involved, Ungureit says. “Non-inflammatory joint pain usually signifies osteoarthritis, which is caused by trauma to the joint or degeneration of the joint tissue in weight-bearing joints.” That means the knee, hip and spinal joints. According to the U.S. Bone and Joint Initiative, a movement sanctioned by the World Health Organization, one in five Americans has some form of arthritis. And contrary to the perception that arthritis is a disease of the elderly, more than half of those with arthritis are under the age of 65. There is no cure for osteoarthritis, but it can be managed with pain killers, physical therapy, steroid injections such as cortisone, or other injec-

Although you can’t prevent osteoarthritis, you can do things to help lessen its onset and its painful effects. “Losing weight and exercising regularly are great ways to combat osteoarthritis,” says Ungureit. “When it comes to joints, we say that ‘motion is lotion.’ Dropping five or 10 pounds may not seem like much, but five pounds per step adds up fairly quickly on your joints.” What about herbal supplements and other alternative treatments for joint pain? Ungureit says there’s nothing wrong with trying them, but make sure you tell your doctor which ones you are thinking about taking, since some supplements can interfere with other medications. So while you may not need to consult your doctor for every ache, there are some serious signs to look for, and some effective steps that both you and your doctor can take to help relieve those painful joints.

The staffs of Luhn Hearing Care and Beyond Hearing Aids.

Take the first step to better hearing There’s more to hearing loss than just losing the ability to hear clearly. Hearing loss can drive a wedge between you and the people you love and the activities that fill your life. It is common for people to put their own hearing needs at the bottom of a long priority list. Good times with family, staying effective on the job, and enjoying social activities are all ways to improve your sense of well-being. Hearing loss can get in the way, and begin to cause subtle changes in how you interact and how you feel. Becky Morris, owner of Beyond Hearing Aids,

experienced this personally. “I was very close to my mom, and it became increasingly hard to keep connected before she chose hearing aids,” said Morris. “I couldn’t share all those little things that matter, and I really missed talking with her. When Mom finally tried hearing aids, the results were immediately evident,” she said. “She laughed at jokes, shared in conversations, and we were able to restore our close bond. I miss her now and am so grateful that she made the effort to get hearing help,” said Morris. Kathy Luhn, of Luhn

Hearing Care, hears stories like Becky’s all the time. That’s one reason they teamed up in one location to help you find hearing help, from simple TV listening systems to high quality hearing aids. Take that first step to better hearing by calling Luhn Hearing Care at 859-342-5846 to schedule a complimentary hearing test during their special event Sept. 19-20, and talk about your hearing options. Also visit the demo room at Beyond Hearing Aids at 463 Erlanger Road in Erlanger while you’re there.

Oral health can directly affect you, your child How does my dental health change during pregnancy? • Due to an exaggerated hormonal response to plaque buildup, pregnant women are more likely to develop gingivitis than women who are not pregnant, resulting in a condition called pregnancy gingivitis. • Pregnant women often have more acid in their mouths (or gastric acid in their mouths from “morning sickness”), increasing the risk of tooth decay. • Increased levels of certain hormones can affect the bones that support the teeth, causing teeth to loosen.

Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy Compounding pharmacists are meeting the needs of peri-menopausal and menopausal women and andropause in men by use of bio-identical hormones. These hormones are appealing to patients because they help to mend a hormonal imbalance with hormones that are identical to those produced in the human body. Structural differences exist between human, and synthetic and animal hormones. In order for a replacement hormone to fully replicate the function of hormones which were originally naturally produced and present in the human body, the chemical structure must exactly match the original. There are significant differences between hormones that are natural to humans and synthetic or horse preparations. Side chains can be added to a naturally-occurring hormone to create a synthetic drug that can be patented by a manufacturer. A patented drug can be profitable to mass produce, and therefore a drug company can afford to fund research as to the medication’s use and effectiveness. However, naturallyoccurring substances can not be patented, so scientific studies are less numerous on natural hormones, because medical research is usually funded by drug companies. Natural hormones include estrone (E1), estradiol (E2), progesterone, testosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), and preg-

nenolone. Our compounding specialists work together with patients and prescribers to provide customized hormone replacement therapy that provides the needed hormones in the most appropriate strength and dosage form to meet each woman’s specific needs. Hormones can be placed in a variety of dosage forms including: capsules; topical creams; suppositories and sublingual troches or drops. No painful pellet insertion is needed. As the patient works with their physician and compounding pharmacist, she can choose the dosage route and strength that is

most beneficial and pleasing to her. Hormone replacement therapy should be initiated carefully after a woman’s medical and family history has been reviewed. Every woman is unique and will respond to therapy in her own way. Close monitoring and medication adjustments are essential. Menopause is not a single point in time when the ovaries are switched off for good, but occurs in stages over the span of a woman’s reproductive life. It’s a transition that begins and ends with female fertility, and in the process, reshapes the way

The Diocese of Covington asks: Can we count on you? How many Catholics live in the 14 Northern Kentucky counties that make up the Diocese of Covington? Where do they live? The Catholic churches within the diocese are trying to find out by taking a census, the first in nearly 75 years. Every organization needs facts and figures to help it make important decisions, for the present and the future. The Diocese of Covington, led by Bishop Roger Foys, is planning for the future. Should a new church be located closer to where more Catholics live? Is a new school needed, or should a current school

12

building be remodeled or expanded? A census will help answer those questions, and many others. Boone County, one of the fastest growing in the whole Commonwealth of Kentucky, was chosen for the first phase of the census project. Last October pairs of volunteers representing the six Catholic churches in the county walked throughout their neighborhoods. They greeted their neighbors, asked questions and gathered basic information. If a person indicated that he or she attended a church or congregation of another denomination, the information was sent on

L I V I N G

to the other congregation, as a courtesy. Because the project was so large, some Catholic churches in Boone County used additional Census Sundays in February or March of this year. Now the Diocese is getting ready for the second phase. Next month the census moves to Campbell and Kenton counties. During the week of Oct. 16-23, hundreds of volunteers, wearing a special nametag (see logo in the ad below), from 29 Catholic parishes will fan out across the two counties, with a goal to knock on each front door. Additional census days, in February and March in

n k y. c o m

2012, may also be used. Can they count on you? The census project is an all-volunteer effort. The two-person volunteer team that visits your home belongs to your neighborhood Catholic church. They have taken some “basic training” in greeting you and gathering some information about your church affiliation. Our visitors will not quiz you about your religious beliefs or try to “convert” you and your family to the Catholic church – our goal is simply to gather information. The Diocese has contacted leaders of other religious denominations

and asked them to inform their congregations of our plans. We have also alerted law enforcement officials across Campbell and Kenton counties that our volunteer teams will be out and about beginning Sunday afternoon, Oct. 16. They ask for your help. It’s been a long time since they’ve had an up-to-date tally of our membership. They want to do what they can to continue to contribute to the communities they are part of – and have been since the Diocese of Covington was founded in 1853. If you live in Campbell or Kenton counties, they’ll

Preparing for fall the Rightway Nursery way Fall is a very important time to re-evaluate your landscape and lawn care needs.

Rightway Nursery, located at 5529 Route 237 in Burlington is a full service garden center

ready to help with all your fall season needs. “It’s also a great time to take advantage of our

Computer-aided landscape design,” said Sandy Wright, owner of Rightway Nursery. “It includes a large overhead designed to scale, and photo imaging, where we take a picture of your house and put the plants in to show you what it would look like. It’s easier than looking at a colorless blueprint.” This is also the time to take advantage of sales on trees, shrubs, perennials, seasonal hanging baskets and planters. Planting this time of year allows the roots to grow through the fall and winter, resulting in a better established plant for spring. Rightway Nursery

offers complete landscape installation and lawn renovation. “We have more than 15 colors of mums that are heavily budded and ready to go,” said Tori Buechter, Landscape Designer for Rightway Nursery. “We also have asters which will add to the brilliant color you want for your yard. We also do hydro seeding, since fall is the best time for planting seeds, and hardscape, which helps you decide on a patio or a wall or walkway that is just what you always wanted.” For more information, contact the store at 5866422, or the web site is www.rightwaynursery. com.

Steven D. Jaeger and Steven R. Jaeger of the Jaeger Firm, PLLC.

Is a last will and testament really enough? It’s difficult to think about. Making end of life decisions and arrangements for your Last Will and Testament are not easy tasks. There are many things to consider. The caring professionals at The Jaeger Firm, PLLC, however, are here to help you through the process, making sure you’re getting all that you need. When preparing to make these decisions, consider the following: • Do you know who you want your property to pass to after you die? • Do you want to preserve those assets you have worked hard to accumulate your entire life for those loved ones in future generations? • Do you want to give someone else the power to control your financial affairs if you are no longer able to do so?

Fall is best time for renovations Pool care expert Sam Ionna, of S.I. Pool Care, said fall is actually the best time for pool renovations. “Doing renovations in the fall ensures that you’ll get into your pool next summer when you want to get into it – not when unreliable spring weather says you can,” Sam said. You’ll also avoid a price increase too.” Whether you’re looking for a new liner, to resurface, need concrete or deck work, or need equipment changes, S.I. Pool Care, a family-owned and operated business, is the place to call. You can trust their expert advice, they’ll do the best job and offer you the best price. In addition to renovations, now is also the time to start thinking about when you want to close your pool. “If you want to choose the date you will close your pool, call now,” Sam

warned. A professional pool closing is the best and safest option. “It’s important to close your pool properly,” Sam said. “If you don’t do it properly, don’t put antifreeze in your

Attic insulation vital part of heating, cooling home What do pirates look for in attic insulation? The arrrr value! OK, while attic insulation isn’t exactly funny, it is a vital part of your home’s heating and cooling. Did you know that over half of a home’s energy loss is through the roof and walls? Proper insulation and sealing air leaks can reduce that energy loss. Plus, your furnace will not have to work as hard – better attic insulation can lower your home energy use by up to 40 percent! Insulation R-value measures how well a material stops heat flow The higher R, the better.

Typically, you should insulate your attic to at least R-38, or approximately 10-12 inches of insulation. The harder the winter, the more a properly balanced attic will benefit your wallet and home. If you already have attic insulation, moving up to a higher R-value could provide more energy savings. If you decide to have extra attic insulation installed by a pro, it’ll cost you roughly $1 to $1.25 per square-foot. There are two easy ways to know if you need or can benefit from adding attic insulation. First, look inside the attic. You need about 20 inches of insulation to

meet the new Department of Energy (DOE) standard of R-60. IF you have about 15-17” inches of insulation you have a decent R-49 value. If your home was built in the past 10 years; you should have about 12-14 inches of insulation which is equal to an R-38, which is the minimum approved standard that builders are supposed to insulate to. The less insulation in the attic, the greater the need. Second, look at your roof when snow falls. A poorly insulated attic lets your homes heat rise up through the attic and melt the snow from the insideout. The faster your roof is visible, the greater the need.

Homeowners beware! Simply pumping a bunch more insulation into the attic can actually cause new problems for your home. According to local Energystar certified expert, Justin Shoemaker at Rooftime, “a real professional will check your home’s ventilation and radiation, to be sure your home is breathing.” The Rooftime staff uses a thermal camera to scan your home to be sure that there is a correct air flow through the attic space via proper roof ventilation, and that there are no air gaps that allow energy to leak away. Department of Energy studies have shown that a

properly insulated and ventilated attic space can save as much as $1,000 every winter in energy savings. According to Rooftime staff, the average attic insulation job costs less than $1,500. As Justin says, “If you are staying in your home for at least three years; an attic insulation investment will put money back into your pocket!” For a free thermal camera scan of your attic space, contact Rooftime at 513-753-8463 or 859-3418463. Kitchen remodels: What to select before your selections Mr. and Mrs. Jones walk into their local big box store to select new kitchen countertops, armed with paint colors and a vague idea of how they want their kitchen to look when the remodel is complete. They’re giving themselves the next hour to spend time in the store and make their countertop selection. An hour and a half later they walk out of the store, confused, overwhelmed and frustrated enough to throw in the towel on the whole kitchen remodeling notion and continue to live with the stained and deteriorated laminate countertops that they have had in their

Kentucky

kitchen for the past 10 years. Unfortunately, the experience of Mr. and Mrs. Jones is not an isolated one. Any home remodeling project can quickly get stressful and expensive but it doesn’t have to. The first step is connecting yourself with experts in the field and letting them guide you in the remodeling process. If Mr. and Mrs. Jones would have walked into the door at Excellence By Nature in Florence, Ky., their experience would have been much different and much more enjoyable. Locally owned and operated, Excellence By Nature employs knowl-

edgeable and courteous staff with combined experience of more than 50 years. Even more important than selecting the elements to go into your home is working with an established company that you can trust. There are many fly-bynight countertop and remodeling companies who offer eager homeowners endless promises yet don’t have an established location or trustworthy employees. Although these may not seem like important items as you begin the selection process, that could not be farther from the truth. These companies are

often underinsured or completely uninsured, leaving a homeowner vulnerable for costly repairs after their remodel is complete. If a homeowner with a problem tries to get in contact with their flyby-night remodeler after the job is complete, they will often find that their phone calls will not be answered or that the company is out of business. Now the homeowners are left to deal with the expensive repairs caused by their negligent remodeler, who has completely vanished. Any home remodeling project is an investment and homeowners should carefully do their home-

work on any company before trusting them to come into their home and do any type of work. Excellence By Nature employs an extremely trustworthy and experienced staff, who are fully licensed, insured and carry an A rating with the BBB. If you are looking for a remodeling company who will assist you with your project from start to finish and long after the project has been completed, look no further than Excellence By Nature. Excellence By Nature offers not only many countertop varieties but also cabinetry, sinks, tile, cabinetry hardware and
