St. Michael looks forward to Blue Ribbon year It’s hard to believe that a new school year is just about to start. The staff at St. Michael is looking forward to another Blue Ribbon year. This prestigious award which can only be received every five years spurs them on to continue to keep St Michael School a school to which we are all proud to be a part . This year they are fortunate to retain all of their faculty and staff. The faculty is on the cutting edge of a new way of teaching which changes the emphasis from how the teacher teaches to what the students are learning. This is a major paradigm shift

where educators work collaboratively to insure high levels of learning for all. Traditionally the classroom teacher is responsible for everything that takes place in the classroom. The teacher makes all the decisions about what to teach (Within the guidelines of the mandated curriculum), how to teach it and how to assess it. Teachers have traditionally collaborated on such things as field trips, duties, recess etc. The change is that teams of teachers work collaboratively to identify what we want our students to learn. Once they identify what
they want their students to learn, they use common assessments to determine if they are in fact learning or if more time and support needed for the student’s learning. Thanks to our PTO, St. Michael has been able to send over half the staff to the conference in St Charles, Mo. to enhance their understanding of and commitment to this concept. They have begun the journey to establishing St Michael School as a professional learning community. This collaboration of the faculty and staff to work interdependently to insure student
learning will assure that St Michael School continues to be a school of excellence. It is vital to show enthusiasm for learning itself and not simply for what the student is expected to learn. The reality is that our children are enthusiastic about learning if we as parents and teachers are enthusiastic about learning. When children see us as life long learners, grounded in faith, they will want to become life long learners as well.

St. Bernard, the gem of the West Side Recent studies indicate that a majority of Catholic parents are overwhelmingly choosing schools that are small, have a strong Catholic identity, and provide a safe environment. St. Bernard, which is situated at the corner of Springdale and Harrison in the community of Taylor Creek, is proud to provide these three features. They strive to create a community in which Christ is known and loved and where the truths of the Catholic faith are lived. They believe that the size of our classes provides an environment where parents, teachers and students personally know each other. In turn this helps to provide a safe environment and enables a quality Catholic education that can be tailored to meet your child's individual needs so as to prepare them to be tomorrow's leaders. They are proud to have graduates who serve the larger community in the fields of medicine, law, business, education, professional sports, and community service. These are some comments from some of their parents: “I am a mom with one son. When I looked for an elementary school, I looked for small class size and a strong dedication to educational excellence. I found that St. Bernard was that school, truly a gem on the west side of Cincinnati that people need to know about.” “My son loves sports and works hard, but he is not the best player on the team. At St. Bernard School, every child has the opportunity to be a
member of the team. For kids, sports are another way to connect and be socially successful.” St. Bernard Athletics program has one major difference over other schools and that is that every child who wants to play sports gets to be on the team. “When I first considered sending my child to St. Bernard school, I heard it was small, safe, and Catholic. I thought I knew what those three words meant, but now I really
understand the meaning of those words: The classroom size is small enough for a rich learning experience. the atmosphere is safe in the sense that there is closeness, almost like the closeness of a family where the older children look out for the younger children. teachers and students alike come to know each other across grade levels and st. bernard school is solidly catholic in that it provides a Christ centered education in agreement
with the teachings of the Catholic Church.” St. Bernard’s Catholic identity is visible in their classrooms, halls, service work and our athletic activities. Along with the parents, the primary educators of the faith, they work together to provide an environment that fosters a love of God and the Catholic Faith. The staff starts each school day together in prayer before the students arrive. The students start and end each day with prayer.
Your child gets the Catholic Education they deserve. It is solid and uses both the Catechism and Bible as classroom resources. At St. Bernard School everyone works together so that everyone succeeds. This starts with the pastor, principal, teachers, students and includes every staff member of the parish. Because of their small size, they are able to provide individualized

La Salle celebrates 50 years of excellence La Salle High School is proud to celebrate 50 years of excellence in education. “We have seen La Salle grow into a premier academic and spiritual institutional leader emphasizing our pillar values of leadership, scholarship, faith, service, and community,” says Principal Tom Luebbe. “For the upcoming school year, we are launching our new De La Salle Signum Fidei Institute (DLSFI) and a revised curriculum incorporating the latest tablet technology.” Three years ago in the office of campus ministry, the Director of Campus Ministry, the Director of Student Activities and Web Communications Director had an informal discussion about their vision for the future. This group of dynamic and committed faculty members grew to include the Director of the Lasallian Scholars Institute and the Director of
Technology, Methodology and Curriculum. Their discussion evolved into a plan to change the face of La Salle High School by focusing on the values that make La Salle unique: its dedication to forming leaders of faith, strong in mind, body and spirit; its dedication to the call to serve. DLSFI integrates the five Lasallian core values of faith, scholarship, service, community, and leadership. Its mission: “The La Salle Servant Leader will have the experience and confidence to ethically lead in a 21st century environment, and be instilled with a faith-guided passion to apply his gifts and talents to better his local and global communities.” DLSFI is composed of many parts for one purpose – to challenge students daily to use their talents as leaders. The DLSFI is unique in its approach to curricu-
lum by incorporating leadership and faith development into the overall curriculum working in conjunction with the new tablet technology. As a part of Signm Fidei, each student will become a member of a faith-sharing community known as their Project Team. Project teams will meet weekly throughout the year in the Signum Fidei Seminar where they will create their Service Initiative. This Service Initiative, led by a senior, will build awareness of the needs in the school, the local, national and worldwide community; identify service projects; raise funds; and build prayer networks. This will serve as a major component of the Senior Capstone Project. All of these parts of the DLSFI will be seamlessly united by the new tablet/PC program and the updated curriculum. The new technology is “not an end in itself
but lays the foundation for continuous learning,” says Dave Volk, Director of Technology, Methodology and Curriculum. “The focus is on learning to use technology rather than learning about technology.” DLSFI and the Student/Servant/ Leader model will become a prototype for other Lasallian schools throughout the country and the world. La Salle celebrates the recent successes of the Class of 2010 which secured scholarship offers totaling over $8.5 million. La Salle invites future Lancers to become a part of the tradition and exciting changes by visiting www.futurelancers.com. Within this website you will be able to create your profile, sign-up for various events and learn more about La Salle High School. Building faith, academics at St. Aloysius St. Aloysius on the Ohio builds faith, values, academics. The pre-kindergarten program, which is state certified, offers both full- and part-time options to meet the needs of the students and parents' work schedules. Portrait of a McAuley graduate A McAuley woman is • a woman of faith • a woman of excellence • a woman of respect for herself and others • a woman of compassionate service • a woman empowered to influence the world Deeply rooted in the teachings of the Catholic Church, in Catherine McAuley’s unique vision, and in the charism of the Sisters of Mercy, the graduate becomes a woman of faith, exploring, deepening and cultivating her relationship with God.
“A strong lively faith is the foundation of all virtue.” Having been nurtured in a student-centered environment which challenges students’ intellects and talents, the graduate is
a woman of excellence. She has become a well-rounded individual. She has been successful in critical thinking and problem solving and appreciates that learning is a life-long process.

her classmates, and celebrates the beauty and diversity of God’s creation.
“God does not look at the action, but the spirit motivating it.”
“We must have a warm, cordial affection for all and manifest it by words, actions, and manner.”
Reaping the benefits of an allgirls educational environment, the McAuley graduate is a woman empowered to influence the world, comfortable with her own identity as an educated woman and leader. She is confident in her ability to make a positive contribution toward the betterment of others and seeks opportunities to stretch her mind and imagination to make a lasting impact on the world.

Be all you want to be at St. Xavier Modern, yet steeped in tradition. Large, but personal. Challenging and inviting. St. Xavier High School is all these things and more to the 1,500-plus young men who call 600 North Bend Road home for their high school years. St. X is the oldest high school in Cincinnati, dating back almost 180 years. It is inspired by more than 450 years of Jesuit tradition and is home to a warm, welcoming atmosphere of learning, friendship and spiritual affirmation. More than 16,000 living alumni bolster that tradition by proudly claiming a spot in what has become known as the Long Blue Line. Despite its long and rich history, St. X is anything but content to rest on its laurels. The school boasts Smart-Cart technology in every classroom and stateof-the-art facilities in the sciences. St. X is forward thinking and among the area’s leaders in educational innovation. Boys from more than 100 grade schools across three states come to St. X’s 110-acre campus and leave as men who populate the world with a genuine sense of purpose and belonging. The young men of St. X are outstanding students in the rigorous Jesuit, Catholic tradition. The school offers 24 Advanced Placement courses in seven subject areas, allowing 86 percent of St. Xavier students who take AP exams to earn college credit while still in high school. More than 99 percent of St. X graduates matriculate to a four-year college
or university; 74 percent of the class of 2010 was accepted into its first choice of colleges. Past that, 75 percent of the class earned some form of academic, service and/or athletic scholarship. These gifts exceeded $38 million in value and averaged $131,000 per graduate. Beyond academics, St. Xavier is a place where students grow in a variety of other ways. One of the most important is as a man for others. More than the school’s motto, being a man for others is a practical, life-long goal for each graduate. Grounded in its Roman Catholic faith and Jesuit mission, St. Xavier calls its students to serve. Community service is not mandatory, yet more than 80 percent of the student body participates in some type of service program through the school. Many more perform community service through their own churches or community groups like Boy Scouts. Among the possibilities at school are Big Brothers/Big Buddies, housing rehab, youth tutoring and the annual Canned Food Drive. The CFD has collected and distributed more than a million pounds of food to the needy of Cincinnati and Appalachia in the last decade alone. Students also have the opportunity to participate in one of nine summer mission trips including two international immersions - and five retreat programs over the course of their four years at St. X.
