St. Xavier offers exceptional experience Since 1831, St. Xavier High School has been helping boys across Greater Cincinnati transform into leaders and men for others in the Catholic faith and Jesuit tradition. Located on a 110-acre suburban campus, its committed faculty and staff inspire the students to pursue excellence across a wide array of rigorous academic programs, enriching extracurricular activities and community service. Students experience a broad diversity of thought, people and opportunities designed not only to prepare them for college, but to propel them successfully through a lifetime of personal, intellectual and spiritual growth. While St. X has a well-earned a reputation as a leader in academics, athletics, the arts, service and more, the school on top of the hill has more than a few sur-
“A St. Xavier education is valuable on many levels, not the least of which is preparing young men for college in an exceptional fashion prises in store. Maybe the most surprising fact is the affordability of the school. Nearly one third of the student body receives tuition assistance to attend. St. X provides $2.7 million in tuition assistance to 31 percent of it students this school year alone. Any qualified student, regardless of his ability to pay tuition, is welcome to challenge himself here. Another fact some find surprising is the bulk of our students have no previous association with the school. In other words, legacy is something of a myth at St. Xavier. Yes, we are
proud to have families who have been sending their sons to St. X for generations. Likewise, we love our families who have sent multiple sons. However, each student arrives on his own merit and achieves through his own efforts. Students with no family connections are just as treasured. A St. Xavier education is valuable on many levels, not the least of which is preparing young men for college in an exceptional fashion. More than 80 percent of the class of 2011 earned admittance to his first choice of college or university. Collectively, the 77
percent of class left with college scholarship opportunities based on academics, athletics, leadership and service valued at more than $42 million. If you would like to learn more about St. Xavier High School and how to become part of the St. X family or to apply for admission, we invite you to visit www.stxavier.org and click the admissions tab on the home page. Come visit St. X for its open house from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13 or register online to take the entrance exam Saturday, Nov. 19.

DePaul Cristo Rey offers a different option for high school “I wanted a new experience for high school,” says Price Hill resident Austin Smith. “The classes are small and I like that,” explains Kayla Nielson of Covington. “I thought it was different compared to other high schools,” adds Erika Hernandez of downtown Cincinnati. The three students are describing their first impressions of DePaul Cristo Rey High School and some of the reasons they decided to enroll in the freshman class. DPCR is the newest Catholic high school in Greater Cincinnati, having just opened this past summer; and as these young people have discovered, it offers options they didn’t find at other high schools. DePaul Cristo Rey has a college-prep only curriculum, challenging classes, caring teachers, sports teams, and student clubs as do many local high schools; yet

It’s a lesson Erika has taken to heart. “I would like to go to Harvard or Stanford and study forensic science,” she says. Kayla adds, “My math teacher is cool and math class is never boring.” While a Corporate Work Study Program and early college planning may not be typical of other high schools, DPCR does share other similarities. It has an athletic program that includes girls’ volleyball, intramural soccer, and boys and girls basketball with other sports to be added in response to student interest.

La Salle High School holds ethical leaders for the 21st century Founded in 1960, La Salle High School just completed its 50 year anniversary last May. And while it's been an incredible 50 years of accomplishment, the best is yet to come. La Salle is committed to educating young men of all academic and socioeconomic levels in the tradition of St. John Baptist de La Salle. Today, there are more Lasallian secondary schools around the world than any other Catholic order. At La Salle, young men are challenged to reach their maximum potential in mind, body and spirit. To that end, La Salle has developed a one-of-a-kind program called the De La Salle Signum Fidei Institute (DLSFI). This initiative builds on the five Lasallian values of Faith, Scholarship, Leadership , Service and Community. Through DLSFI, students are being molded into ethical leaders through a curriculum of authentic Catholic teaching, rigorous academic endeavor and co-
curricular excellence. And our leading-edge tablet program supports all of these efforts throughout La Salle. Recently, 75 student leaders from DLSFI and the Lasallian Scholars Institute (LSI) - a program that provides accelerated learning in and out of the classroom - were given a day-long seminar by Verus Global. Verus Global has provided its leadership model to multiple corporations including Procter & Gamble, Nestle, Ford and Kellogg's. La Salle High School is the first school to receive this level of training from Verus Global. Tom Martin, a certified facilitator with Verus Global and the day's seminar leader, commented, “La Salle is unique in that it has an entire curriculum designed around leadership development. In our experience nationally at Verus Global we have never heard of a high school providing this level of training. This is truly a
gift for these young men at La Salle High School.” Steve Dalton, director of DLSFI, and Michael Holman, director of LSI, orchestrated the day's program and provided each student project team with a member of the La Salle faculty. “These young men are taking full advantage of our Lasallian mission and learning skills that will help them live their lives as successful servant leaders,” Dalton said. “Signum Fidei is designed to do just what you see today…provide opportunities for our young men to attain higher levels of achievement.” “The skills learned from today's seminar and the skill practice which will continue throughout the year are core to the career and leadership development model that the Scholars Institute is implementing along with our Signum Fidei program,” Holman said. La Salle continues its long tra-
dition of graduating high-achieving students. Last year's graduates earned over $14.2 million in scholarships and grants for academic, leadership, service and athletic accomplishments. La Salle is also very committed to serving young men and their families through scholarships and tuition assistance to insure young men can take advantage of a Lasallian education. If you would like to learn more about how to become a part of the La Salle Community, go to www.futurelancers.com or contact Jake Pucci at 741-2365. La Salle will also be hosting an Open House for prospective families on Sunday, Nov. 6, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and our placement test will be given on Saturday, Nov. 19. To register for this test or find out more about La Salle, make sure to go to www.futurelancers.com.

St. Michael boasts Professional Learning Community The term Professional Learning Community describes a collegial group of administrators and school staff who are united in their commitment to student learning. They share a vision, work and learn collaboratively, visit and review other classes, and participate in decision making. “It’s a working journey,” explained St. Michael School Principal Jody Farrell, where they have been implementing the professional learning community philosophy and concentrating on their mathematics and writing curriculum for the last four years. The benefits to the staff and students include a reduced isolation of teachers, better informed and committed teachers, and academic gains for students. “Professional Learning Communities is about changing the emphasis from what the teachers do to what students are learning,” Farrell said. “It also increases collaboration and gets teachers working as a team.” The goal is to create an environment where everyone is on the same page so that a student’s education can be enhanced. Farrell said this is a good fit for St. Michael School and she and the staff look forward to where this journey will take them. St. Michael, a blue-ribbon school, is accredited by the state of Ohio, educating students in kindergarten (half-day and full-day classes are available) through eighth grade. The dedicated, caring faculty is comprised of recently degreed teachers as well as those with more than 30 years of experience.

Moeller’s laptop program in 13th year of success In 1996 when Moeller’s former principal, Dan Ledford, first presented a plan to the faculty for a one-to-one student laptop program there was some skepticism. No other school of its size in the area had a laptop program. Now after 13 years the program has proven extremely successful and has prepared many graduates for academic success in higher studies. “Because of Moeller’s laptop program the transition from the high school class-
room to the college classroom experience was seamless. In college we were expected to utilize all the technology that was available; I was very well prepared. Even today, in law school, I often am helping fellow students with tech problems.” -Greg Robinson, Moeller ’06, Notre Dame ’10, Vanderbilt Law School. Over the years the use of technology as a learning tool has increased, developed and been refined. Moeller students are now using tablet computers with touch screens
that engage all their senses in the learning process. Through innovative technologies in the classroom, Moeller students have greater opportunities for creative higher-level problem solving and hands-on experiences. For a Moeller student the tablet computer has become a regular part of the educational process In technology things develop and change at a rapid pace. Thanks to the vision of a one-to-one laptop program conceived in 1996, Moeller students
continue to succeed in the classroom during their high school years and beyond. “The preparation I received at Moeller with the laptop program made a difference when it comes to college projects especially in math and science. Compared to other students, I saved so much time, because using any type of computer program was second nature to me.” - Alex Jaeger, Moeller ’06, The Ohio State University ’10, Duke Fellowship, PHD Pharmacology.

St. Ursula Continued from 14 or come see for yourself what makes St. Ursula so extraordinary. There are many opportunities to experience firsthand the SUA campus and state-of-the-art facilities, the talented teachers, the tradition and history and the unforgettable feeling you get when you walk in the door. “When I walked through the school for the first time, it felt like home to me and I knew it was like no place I had ever been. I knew right away that this was the school for me,” said Julie, SUA junior.
Location, Location, Location Located in one of the safest neighborhoods in Cincinnati, St. Ursula’s location offers many benefits. Located in the heart of
the city’s cultural center, students benefit from the surrounding gems like the Krohn Conservatory, Eden Park, Playhouse in the Park, Cincinnati Art Museum, and Mt. Adams, all within walking distance. It’s easy to reach because it’s centrally located and many methods of transportation are available to our students.
Community for a lifetime Students develop friendships that last a lifetime. Class reunions and strong alumnae programs keep classmates and friends connected for life. It doesn’t take long for new and lasting friendships to form, whether incoming students know other girls on their first day or not. Our students become part of our family and feel nurtured by their caring teachers.
Many students and graduates say they love the century-long traditions at St. Ursula Academy from the freshman “beanie day” to the senior tea and graduation in long white gowns and red roses. Upon graduation, students tell us they feel prepared for college. St. Ursula students are educated to be open-minded critical thinkers and lifelong learners who study all aspects of an issue and form opinions based upon inquiry and analysis. These skills give them self-confidence, high self-esteem and integrity. SUA graduates are aware of their own unique gifts and the responsibility they have to use these gifts to benefit themselves and others. Whatever a student’s hopes and dreams, St. Ursula Academy can help her achieve them. The guidance team begins to work
personally with each student in her freshman year to help with the adjustment to high school and to make sure the classes fit the student. Student guidance continues every year to make sure each student is on track to meet her personal and education goals. In a student’s senior year, the guidance team offers many resources to assist with the college application and selection process, and the results are impressive. The slogan “We are St. Ursula. We are Unstoppable” applies to each student and her personal goals. SUA teaches every girl to have confidence, to believe in herself and to pursue her dreams and goals. Learn more today.
