Cedar Village celebrates Older Americans Month May is Older Americans Month. This is a tradition dating back to 1963 when we honor the legacies and ongoing contributions of older Americans and support them as they enter the next stage in life. The monthly theme - “Age Strong! Live Long” - recognizes the diversity and vitality of today’s older Americans who span three generations and highlights the importance of staying healthy throughout our lives. Older Americans have pioneered new technologies in medicine, communications, and industry while spearheading a cultural revolution that won equal rights for minorities, women, and disabled Americans. Cedar Village is joining communities nationwide in celebrating the month with special activities and events. On May 6, Fran Savard, director of Regulatory Relations, Association of Philanthropic Homes for the Aged (AOPHA) spoke at a Cedar Village Community Education

Program on “Health Care Reform: Impact on Medicare.” Savard touched on the status of Medicare benefits, on the effect of health care reform on individuals living on fixed incomes, and on potential cuts in coverage for seniors. To further commemorate Older Americans Month, seven residents were honored by Cedar Village residents, staff,

seniors to be observant of their financial managers and to be watchful of scams and telephone calls offering deals that are too good to be true. Celebrate the sounds of your life Did you know that hearing loss is the third most common health problem in the United States? Hearing loss affects more than 36 million Americans today, and with the rise in use of headsets and earbuds, the number of Americans who experience hearing loss at a younger age is growing. Untreated hearing loss can negatively impact your social and emotional well-being, thus decreasing your quality of life. Signs of hearing loss include having trouble hearing conversations in a noisy environment or on the telephone, being unable to hear people talk to you without looking at them, or experiencing

ringing in your ears. Hearing problems are commonly associated with the normal aging process, but can also be caused by exposure to loud noises (work, recreation, or military), ear infections or trauma, illness or certain medications, and ear drum/inner ear damage caused by foreign objects like cotton swabs. In celebration of Better Hearing Month this May, Christopherson & Clark Hearing Center is offering complimentary hearing consultations to assess your hearing health. Owner and audiologist Sharon Christopherson has more than 30 years of experience in evaluating, diagnosing, and treating

hearing problems. She has earned the confidence of her patients by helping them select the best treatments for their hearing loss, lifestyle, and budget and by fully and honestly discussing with them their options. Sharon and her associate, Amy Smith, would like to extend to you the same professional, courteous, and personalized care their patients have come to know and trust. If you are missing the sounds of your life, call us today at 598-9444 to schedule your free hearing evaluation or to request your free copy of the Consumer's Guide to Hearing Aids.

Changing people’s lives with a smile Can a life be changed simply by a smile? The Gentle Dental Care team and their patients say yes. One case in particular comes to mind for Kim Fisk, new patient coordinator and dental assistant. “The case was recommended to us by an organization,” she explains. “We donated the time, materials and service.” The gentleman who needed the work had missing and decayed teeth. “He was very self-conscious about his appearance and it was effecting his entire life,” Kim says. His teeth were pulled and a “beautiful” denture was put in the same day. “He was very emotional,” Kim says. “He was so grateful that he could finally smile. He really looked amazing!” Not too long after, the Gentle Dental Care team received a note from the man thanking them again for their service. “I thank God every night for you and your staff for not just changing my appearance but also my attitude,” he wrote. “My confidence level has risen tremendously.” Gentle Dental completely turned his life around. He told them how their work helped him improve his performance at his job and how that helped him get an apartment. “I thank you and the staff for your services,” he wrote. “I know with God’s help and my new smile, I will go a long way!” His words brought the

Gentle Dental team to tears. “This is why we do what we do – to change lives,” says Dr. Tara Dallmann. Gentle Dental Care is a patient-focused general dentistry practice located in Independence. The team is committed to providing every person who comes to their office with the most up-to-date dental services and treatments in a comfortable, relaxing setting. They treat their patients like family. Dr. Dallmann and her team provide a full range of services, from preventive care such as cleaning and oral examinations to restorative measures such as fillings and crowns. For people who want to improve the look of their teeth, they offer cosmetic treatments such as bonding, veneers and recontouring.

However, what really sets Gentle Dental Care apart from all other practices is the caring staff. “We encourage our patients, as well as comfort,” Fisk says. “For those who are fearful we let them know that we are genuinely proud of them for coming in. Got deer? Nature’s Corner can help What can I do about the deer eating my plants? How can I get rid of the deer without harming the environment? These are the most asked questions at Nature’s Corner Greenhouses, in Delhi Township, growers of quality annuals, perennials and water plants. If they had a dime for every person that has asked these questions, they would be rich, according Beth and Tom, owners of Nature’s Corner. But take heart there are safe, easy solutions to help with deer problems. Many people feel that every year they have to wage a battle with the deer that frequent their flower beds and vegetable gardens and often times they feel defeated. There are some simple organic, nontoxic methods to use, but it is important to understand the deer first before you can finesse them and win the battle. Deer are always vigilant about being alert to danger and their main defense for this is their sense of smell. Any odor that is heavy enough to mask ordinary odors and in essence jam the deer’s predator-alert sensors will send them away. Nature’s Corner has a “Secret Plant” to deter deer and it works! They have been testing this plant with customers who have deer issues over the past four years. Nature’s Corner has consistently gotten positive feedback about the effec-

We s t | N o r t h w e s t

tiveness of this plant. Tom said that they have told customers about this plant called Iboza and have had many people tell them they were skeptical. Their response was just try it - it is one of the cheapest plants we sell for only $2.79 per pot. The next time they saw the same customer they would remark on their amazement that the deer walked up to the plant and then turned and walked away! Beth adds that Nature’s Corner uses Iboza as a decorative foliage because it is a nice accent plant that spreads quickly. It is great to add to a mixed pot or to plant around plants more desirable to deer to keep them away! Nature’s Corner has many customers coming back year after year since they have tried Iboza to get more and tell us of their success stories, Tom said. This plant has really helped a lot of our customers with their deer problems. There are other plants that are deer resistant meaning that deer stay away from them because of their texture or odor. All of Nature’s Corner’s employees are happy to share a list of plants they grow that are deer resistant and deer repellent. They have a nice handout to help with more information on keeping deer away. Nature’s Corner also sells organic deer, rabbit, mole, squirrel, car and dog repellents that are

May 19-20, 2010

applied directly to problem areas or plants. To help their customers out more Nature’s Corner is having a sale of all animal reppelants! The sale is for a limited time and is for 10 percent off any liquid or powder container of animal repellent. The sale also includes Deer Scram and Liquid Fence. Nature’s Corner is your local place to shop for deer repellent plants or deer repellent products. Nature’s Corner is ready to help you make the deer “go away!”
