A free food & music festival in Mill Meadows
O
n July 8th, BedPop is hosting Taste, a free gourmet and street food festival.
Set among the beautiful surroundings of Bedford’s embankment and with live music on the bandstand, the Mill Meadows event will showcase unique culinary experiences and great music. “Taste Bedford will be like no other free outdoor event in Bedford,” said organiser, Anne Harnan. “We want to raise the foodie profile of the town and showcase the region’s best chefs and producers. We’re also bringing some unique street food stalls to town, all against the backdrop of some amazing music.” Headlining the Food Stage will be Phil Fanning from award-winning restaurant Paris House. Phil is the executive chef and owner of the fine dining restaurant based on the Woburn Estate and is considered to be one of the brightest culinary talents and head chefs in the country. Headlining the famous bandstand at Taste will be none other than singer songwriter Mark Morriss,
who famously made his name fronting English indie outfit The Bluetones. Mark was at the helm as the band scored 14 top ten singles and three top ten albums and he has also enjoyed a successful solo career and is a member of Matt Berry’s music touring band The Maypoles. Mark combines cracking tunes with great anecdotes; the perfect mix for a sunny Saturday afternoon on Bedford’s Embankment! Also gracing the stage are Rebecca de Winter, My Girl the River, Brass Knuckle and Wang Dang Doodle – all held together by the Roll Your Own Records DJ crew Street food vendors include Mexican, Indian, vegan, French crepes, Paella, gourmet sausages and Braai served from a ‘steam train’! Artisan vendors will be selling bread, oils, cakes and more from the Producers’ Tent. This event is being organised in partnership with Charles Wells and also sponsoring are Woodfines Solicitors, Robinson & Hall, The Vintage Suit Hire Company, and Bedford Language Centre. Alistair Burt, your Local MP... I’M WITH BRENDA OF BRISTOL!
F
irst and foremost a very warm and sincere ‘thank you’ to the people of NE Bedfordshire, who returned me to Parliament in the recent General Election. To have been elected for the fifth time to represent you is an honour and a privilege indeed, and a responsibility I never take lightly.
I have never known a more curious election in terms of its trajectory, from what looked like a dominant position at the beginning for the Conservative Party, to the drama of the exit poll telling us something different. There are many causes, and we all expect much to be written about it in the weeks, months and years to come, so I am not going to pre-empt all that. Suffice to say I think a lot of lessons have been learned by all parties, and the next election campaign will be different. Did I say next election? Well, we could all do with a break! I am aware that Brenda from Bristol spoke for all when she exclaimed her frustration that the election was called. Two elections and a Referendum from 2015-17 is quite enough! We shall see. The election will also be remembered as it was marred by two terrorist atrocities. Coming in the wake of the murder of Jo Cox MP a year ago, and of the Westminster attack more recently, the awful scenes from Manchester and London Bridge mattered much more to people than politics for many days, and rightly 8
so. I hope the stories of bravery from passers-by, of heroism from emergency services, and of what had already been achieved in young lives cut short will long be remembered after the attackers themselves are forgotten and discarded. The unbreakable spirit of people in adversity is sometimes just astonishing. The consequence of all this is that I expect this Parliament to be the most difficult of all I have been fortunate to serve in. We have, of course, the challenge of leaving the EU, though the Parliamentary arithmetic now ensures that the Prime Ministers determination to see this as a ‘national endeavour’ should be fulfilled by taking note of a wide range of voices, in Parliament and outside, rather than just those of a governing party. The increased threat from terror sources, from home and overseas, will require even greater efforts to combat and disrupt it. And the huge social challenges of the country, the balancing of the economy between new requirements for spending and the need to raise it wisely and fairly, will not be easy. My own role has changed once again, as I am asked by the Prime Minister to return to Middle East affairs, which affect us all greatly. I shall write further about this next time.
Rt Hon Alistair Burt MP

What’s more important than
a will? O
ne person develops dementia every three minutes. Many others lose their faculties via strokes, accidents and more. The emotional challenges this puts on you and your family are substantial, and a lack of financial preparation exacerbates this. I believe that every adult with assets should look at getting a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA). In many ways this can be more important than a will. Die will-less and you don’t choose where your assets go but if you lose your faculties without a LPA, your assets could be locked down - even stopping your family paying for your care. It’s worth remembering people can lose their faculties very quickly. And when their family are already having to come to terms and deal with that - without a LPA, the only way they can take charge of your finances is via the Court of Protection. So here’s my key LPA facts… • Stay in control. With a Lasting Power of Attorney you nominate a trusted friend or relative to take control of your assets, but ONLY if and when you lose capacity. However it needs to be set up when you have mental capacity, so thinking, “it’s not to worry about now” is a mistake - once you know there’s an issue it may be too late.
12
Money Matters
By Martin Lewis • The cost has been cut to £82. To encourage more people to take this up, the cost of registering a LPA in England and Wales has recently been reduced from £110 to £82. You can find the forms at www.gov.uk. However, those on some forms of benefits may be able to have the fee reduced or wiped. • You can do it yourself, but if things are complex, get help. The gold standard way to do a LPA is to get a solicitor to draft one for you – worth considering if your affairs are complex, such as overseas property or business assets. One way is to use www.which.co.uk legal service where you fill in a questionnaire to generate the LPA form, then it’s checked by a qualified paralegal. The standard charge for this from is £139. If you need help but have a low income, little savings and are over 70, disabled, have a disabled child or are a single parent, you may be able to get help through the Civil Legal Advice scheme at www.gov.uk/civil-legal-advice. If not, your local Citizens Advice office may be able to help. Martin Lewis is the Founder and Chair of MoneySavingExpert.com. More than just a charity shop!
E
mmaus Village Carlton is a homeless charity in North Bedfordshire and is home to 33 formerly homeless people.
One of 29 Emmaus communities across the UK it was opened in 2002 and over the past 15 years has grown in to a thriving social enterprise with a very popular Bistro. At Emmaus Village Carlton we give people a home, meaningful work in our social enterprises and an opportunity to get themselves back on their feet. When someone comes to live at an Emmaus community, they become an Emmaus companion. They are given their own room, clothing, food and drink, as well as a small weekly allowance.
Supporting self esteem
For many people who experience homelessness, one of the biggest obstacles they must overcome is a loss of self-esteem. Emmaus provides an opportunity to regain this, with a chance to make a real contribution to their community.
Steve Scott became homeless after he left his job due to his problem with alcohol; he then lost his home after his landlord sold the property he was living in. He joined Emmaus 10 months ago. Steve helps others who find themselves in difficult situations. “I attend regular local soup runs in Bedford with other companions and staff from Carlton serving up homemade soup and hot drinks to people who are living on the streets. It’s also an opportunity to offer support to people who are in need as I once was. “I also recently went to Romania to see how they make use of the items that we send them each year and to offer help and advice on how they could improve their operations. “Giving back to others has its rewards, I get a real feeling of positivity that I have helped someone out, even in a small way. It’s also a way for me to thank Emmaus and everyone connected with the community. They have showed faith in me to give me the opportunities I have had. I have also started to regain feelings of self-respect which have been missing from my life for a while now.”
16
Sustaining a community
At Emmaus we collect and sell donated goods, using the money generated to sustain our community. We also refurbish and upcycle items in our workshop and run a delivery, collection and house clearances services. Our Bistro, Em’s serves a range of hot and cold drinks, delicious cakes and pastries as well as a selection of sandwiches and appetising hot meals.
The Queen’s Award
Marjorie are extremely passionate about their experiences of volunteering – helping out a charity that supports formerly homeless people by offering a home and meaningful work. The award will be presented at Emmaus Village Carlton by Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Bedfordshire, Mrs Helen Nellis, on behalf of the Queen, later in the summer.

Senior Snippets Tips for Reducing Stress
geing brings about new challenges such as health, finances and dealing with change that can cause stress. It is important for older adults to find healthy ways to cope with these negative and potentially harmful feelings.
Participate in social and community activities. Social interaction enhances self-esteem and reduces stress. Spending time with family or friends for a few hours each day has real benefits. Joining a club or group also helps to prevent loneliness and isolation. Stay focused on positive things. Avoid negative selftalk such as “I can’t do that” or “I’m too old.” Instead of thinking what you can’t do, remember what you can do.
Take care of yourself. Get regular exercise, eat nourishing food and maintain a healthy weight. Read. Reading is a way for seniors to relieve stress in their lives without ever leaving home! Reading reduces the heart rate and releases tension in the muscles. Reading at least 30 minutes a day can have a positive impact. Make a list of the important things you need to handle each day. Follow the list so you feel organised and in control. You will get a feeling of accomplishment too. It sometimes takes a little practice and effort to put some of these techniques into play in your life. But once you do so, you may be pleasantly surprised at the positive benefits you’ll receive. Retiring Abroad… …Malta
M
any people want to retire to the seaside. Bournemouth? Sand, rolling waves…strolling along the pier eating ice cream and sipping cappuccino. One problem. The British weather of course!
So where could you live out the twilight years? One popular place is Malta. The cost of living in Malta can be pretty cheap compared to other European countries. Food is relatively inexpensive by UK standards but the price of eating out in top restaurants can be steep, especially if you are choosy. With sunshine 300 days of the year there’s no high energy bills. Public transport is also cheap but buses can be overcrowded and infrequent out of season so it’s probably a good idea to buy a cheap car. Renting an apartment is quite easy and inexpensive compared to the UK and in theory you should be able to find a two bed flat for around £500/£600 a month. If you have a house to rent in the UK plus pensions and savings, you could be in a good position but this depends where you choose to live. Inland towns such as Mosta and Naxxar are a lot
cheaper than trendy Sliema or St. Julians where ex-pats tend to congregate.
As far as crime is concerned Malta is very safe with violent crime being very low. English is an official language in Malta (as well as Maltese) though if you move permanently it’s only polite to learn Maltese, otherwise you will not be accepted as a true resident. Maltese (being Arabic and Italian based) is a very difficult language to learn so you’ll be congratulated if you do! The Maltese drive on the left but don’t follow the rules as we do! Roads are much better though these days with new bypasses and a huge improvement to the Salina Coast Road. Healthcare is free (for now) and Malta is among the top six countries in the EU for the quality of its care. Private plans start from as little as £90 a year to approx. £350 a year, which allow you to attend various private clinics and hospitals and avoid the queues at public clinics. Maltese lifestyle can be laid back and slow-paced and the Maltese people are some of the nicest you will meet and will go out of their way to help you. So all in all, Malta could be a good place to explore as a retirement destination. www.therealmalta.com

Prestigious Gold and Platinum INVOLVE awards
presented to local student
Mark Rutherford student Leonardo Buttice was recently awarded not only the first Villiers Park Gold Standard INVOLVE Award, but also the first ever Platinum INVOLVE Award for Outstanding Leadership and Project Management.
Leonardo is a member of The Villiers Park 2020 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) Scholars Programme; a two-year course which runs alongside A-levels. As part of the course, they participate in the INVOLVE initiative, a self-organised project which encourages Scholars to contribute to learning within their own and other local schools and colleges. He fully committed himself to the project, resulting in the Platinum Award. As part of his project, Leonardo teamed up with two other STEM Scholars and Year 12 students, to lead
a two hour science day during Science Week. This project targeted thirty Year 4 students from Ravensden and Great Barford Lower Schools and involved three simultaneous sessions during which the Scholars led their own chosen subject (for Leonardo this was Chemistry). Leonardo and his team liaised with the schools to plan all the details to make the day possible. They received huge support from Mark Rutherford and the day proved a resounding success.

Bedfordshire Archives
‘Thinking of You’
The 2017 theme for this year’s exhibitions
B
edfordshire Archives exists to collect, preserve and make available to the public documents that record the history of the county of Bedfordshire and the people who have lived and worked there. Although some of the documents record things that happened many centuries ago, the service is just as interested in collecting documents that record the activities of today. Many of the documents held by the service are about the land. These include maps, property deeds and plans for development. They can be used by people wanting to know what was once on a particular site and are often used by those looking at the history of buildings. There
are many examples of this on the service’s website where staff and volunteers are creating pages of information about towns, villages and hamlets throughout the county. Other documents are about people and their activities. These include: records of baptisms, marriages and burials, letters, diaries, registers of electors, records of clubs and societies. These records are often used by people researching their own family history. They can also be used to look at society more generally gathering together information from a variety of documents to investigate attitudes, reactions or just how things were done in the past. To protect individuals there are restrictions on the use of documents less than 100 years old that contain personal or sensitive information, but even so there is a wealth of material to be discovered. The archive service is based in the Riverside Building of Borough Hall in Bedford and anyone can make an appointment to use the archives. Not sure what you would like to see? There are a several ways you can find out more without having a particular goal: browse the archives service website, read their latest newsletter online and ask to receive future issues, visit their current exhibition or go to one of their events. Each year the archive service chooses a theme for small exhibitions to highlight just some of the fascinating material to be found in the archives. Each exhibition lasts three months. The archivists take being the curator in turns, which helps build on their knowledge of the collections. The theme for 2017 is Thinking of You. The first exhibition of the year, Thinking of You with Love, concentrated on letters to loved ones. The second exhibition,
30
Thinking of You, Remembering Then, showcased reminiscences of everyday life from the last 70 years. From July 6th until the beginning of October the exhibition in the archives reception area will be Thinking of You in Time of Need. It will show documents and photographs illustrating the role that the people of Bedfordshire played in hosting evacuees during the Second World War . The theme Thinking of You in Time of Need will also feature in a panel display on Bedfordshire’s tradition of welcoming refugees. This was launched during Refugee Week, 19-25 June, and will be used at other events including the service’s Heritage Open Days event.
county’s documentary heritage, see the specialist storage areas and watch a demonstration of archive conservation. The tours will give an extra opportunity to view the reception exhibition on evacuees, together with other displays illustrating Bedfordshire’s long history of welcoming migrants. Tours will take place at half-hourly intervals between 10am and 12pm and between 2pm and 4pm and will last around 50 minutes. They can be booked in advance by emailing archive@bedford. gov.uk or telephoning 01234 228833. www.therealmalta.com
As part of the national Heritage Open Days Bedfordshire Archives will be running guided tours on Thursday 7th and Saturday 9th September. The tours will provide an opportunity to look behind-the-scenes at the archives on days when the service is normally closed to the public, and are a great introduction to the service. Visitors will be able to learn how the service cares for the

Young bookworms Y
Young bookworms urged to take part in summer reading
oung bookworms are invited to take part in this year’s Summer Reading Challenge with Bedford Borough Council’s libraries. The event challenges children to read books during their summer break in order to earn rewards and improve their literary skills. This year’s theme is Animal Agents and there will be lots of activities and events taking place in the borough’s libraries to support the challenge. To take part, all children need to do is sign up at their nearest library. They will then receive a special collector’s folder and, as they borrow and read at least six library books over the summer, they can collect stickers to help complete the challenge. After reading six library books children will collect an Animal Agents certificate; if they read 12 library books they will be rewarded with an Animal Agents zip tag and by reading an amazing 18 library books children will receive an Animal Agents medal. Children can read any library books they like: fact books, stories, joke books, picture books and audio books. As long as they are borrowed from the library, they all count. Councillor Sarah-Jayne Holland, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture, said: “This is a great and fun initiative to help young people with their 40
reading – especially while school’s out for the summer. “It’s been popular in Bedford Borough over the years with more than 3,000 local children taking part last year. “Children who participate in the challenge really benefit and this is apparent when they return to school in the autumn term. It provides a good opportunity for families to explore the range of books available at our popular libraries.” The Summer Reading Challenge runs from 15 July to 9 September.

The building consists of two floors (for the easy version) and the gang has to rob the safe on each floor and escape to win. That isn’t an easy thing to do though as each floor (4x4 cards) has a security guard on a random patrol route and numerous security devices that you don’t know about (the cards are face down until you look into or explore a room!) This is a strategy game that involves a lot of talking and discussing of tactics as things can change so quickly, a deadbolt can block your way, the guard changes direction or the security camera is just around the corner. Trying to negotiate the floor and then crack the safe is a real challenge, though it always feels possible to do ‘next time’, that relies on all the players working together and trying to outfox everything that is put in your way. When you do manage to get away though you get a real feeling of victory!

seduced the hearts of millions with its back-to-back sizzling tunes. It’s the original high-school musical featuring everyone’s favourite characters – Sandy, Danny, the groovy T Birds, the sassy Pink Ladies and the whole gang at Rydell High – and all the unforgettable songs from the hit movie including You’re The One That I Want, Grease Is The Word, Summer Nights, Hopelessly Devoted to You, Sandy, Greased Lightnin’ and many more. Voted the “No 1 Greatest Musical”*, Grease has proved that a musical love story, bursting with denim, cheerleaders, slick hairstyles, rock’n’roll, 1950’s pop culture and an irresistible mix of teenage angst and young romance is timeless and universal. Grease is the ultimate feel-good, pick-me-up musical – an electrifying extravaganza, packed with fun, energy and vibrant physicality. Film
Review The Mummy
The Dark Universe is here, Universals attempt to follow the mega success of the Marvel shared universe begins (again… as they seem to have disowned the Dracula movie that was supposed to be the first) with The Mummy starring Tom Cruise. It opened to almost universal derision and has been subjected to some horrible reviews, which are partly right. The Mummy is a missed opportunity, the shared universe parts of the film are intriguing and bode well for the future, you get to see a vampire skull and what looks like parts of The Creature of The Black Lagoon, but the overall film is more than a bit average. In fact the main story is worse than the 1999 version with Brendan Fraser. It isn’t scary at all, despite the 15 certificate, and the action is all a bit ‘seen it all before’. Tom Cruise is a great actor but this is not his greatest performance, the script does nothing for him even though it seems tailored more for him than for The Mummy, which should be the star of the film. After all the Universal plan is to create a series of films with the monsters as the focus!

Review Little Altars Everywhere
by Rebecca Wells

A book that transports you to Louisiana in the heart of the southern states of America and throws you into the lives of the Walker family. Siddalee is the eldest daughter in the family and she is the narrator who opens the story. Growing up in the 1960s life is changing around her and it is only as an adult that she can begin to deal with the turbulence of her childhood. Each chapter is told by a different family member. There is Vivi, the matriarch, and Shep, a father who tries to provide for his family but is under a lot of pressure and unable to quite express his feelings. Siddalee’s voice is joined by her siblings, Little Shep, Lulu, and Baylor, each giving a glimpse into life for the Walker clan. From the summers spent in Spring Creek, to dance classes, a pregnant dog, and a runaway daughter, the pieces gradually come together. Accompanying the family through their experiences are the Ya-Yas: four close friends, including Vivi, who are loud, colourful, and vibrant. But this is not always an easy story to read. Families can hide secrets that the outside world will never know and the consequences won’t be felt for years.

Unwanted guests
are you prepared for parasites? Fleas
Fleas are found on other animals, outdoors and in the homes where animals live. Fleas can quickly hop onto your pet. Even indoor pets can be affected as fleas can enter the house on shoes and clothing. Fleas cause itchy bites in pets and people. We recommend regular treatment with safe, effective products to prevent your dog or cat from carrying fleas in their coat and into your house.
Worms
Roundworm eggs are found in the soil and are eaten by pets when they lick and groom their paws and coats. Tapeworms are caught by eating infected meat (as when cats eat mice and birds) or by eating fleas, which can contain tapeworm eggs. Lungworm is transmitted by eating slugs or snails. Dogs that spend time in an outdoor kennel, or frequently chew sticks and toys that have been lying on the ground are at increased risk of accidentally eating a slug.
Worms can cause itchy bottoms, intestinal problems, and dangerous lung damage. Some can also cause serious illness in people, particularly young children. Many worming products are available but make sure that you choose one that covers all three worm types. Monthly worming is usually required to provide complete worm protection.
Ticks
Ticks are found in long grass and in woodland, particularly between March and November. They jump onto pets (or people!) and can transmit nasty infections, such as Lyme disease. Check your pet daily for ticks and remove them safely as soon as possible. We strongly recommend the use of products to repel or kill ticks.
Acorn House stocks a wide range of products to prevent and treat infestations with fleas, worms and ticks. Our vets and nurses will help you choose the most suitable product for your pet and your lifestyle – just give us a call or drop into the practice. 55

Your Tarotscopes for July 2017... by Susan Peppiatt Cancer
Letting someone get close who has been kept at a distance through fears of breaking a friendship shows as at negative not positive move. Be clear where you want to end up in this relationship though before you open the door too wide.
Leo
Finally it’s all beginning to fall into place more easily in a financial direction for Leo’s this June. That doesn’t mean that the hard work is over, but is more that the path to security is easier to see and the knowledge that it is at least attainable is comforting.
Virgo
Plans for family get togethers show as both fun and exasperating, as everyone seems to have different agendas for a special day later in the year. Usually it’s down to Virgos to get things arranged to perfection, but this time it looks as if everyone wants to have a little part to play.
Libra
Relationships with older family members or friends seem a little demanding this month and it’s hard to hold back when criticism is undeserved; but the best advice is to try to roll with the issues rather than being consumed with anger or hurt, as this soon passes, and would leave more difficulty otherwise.
Scorpio
It’s a little late to be wary of jumping into something without too much thought, but the thought to keep in mind this month is that it’s better to hold back until some proof of worth is offered before spending any larger amounts on something meant to make life better. Life will always have its challenges. Spending more now on something which could make you feel worthless is pointless.
Sagittarius
Sagittarians have always been there for others, and somehow found the energy to be strong and helpful even when worn out and overused. This month it looks as if there is some payback which makes them feel appreciated, instead of just constantly needed.
Capricorn
House and home show as quite demanding in the need to be busy both planning and making changes. Differences of opinion which have held things up are easier to overcome with a little laughter, it seems.
Aquarius
Young people and young minded events are in mind this June for Aquarians, so be aware that a lot of energy is needed to make things happen in time, in the way desired and at a reasonable cost. Overall the effort is worthwhile, for the happiness it creates.
Pisces
Decisions for later life need talking about and acting on soon, to reach fulfilment in time to make life better in a decent amount of time, and in a comfortable way. These particularly involve things like house moves, family connections, and monetary plans.
Aries
A new sense of self-belief makes an important difference to those born under this sign, this month. While challenges may feel unchanged, answers seem easier to both find and implement this month and for the start of summer.
Taurus
Exciting places and people who can be both demanding and intense, but are worth knowing for the lessons that they give just by being around at this time. They are shown as an exhilarating change to everyday work , but need to be taken in small doses, so that they do not become too much.
Gemini
A month when all balanced thought may go out of the window in the drive for fulfilment of one particular course or project. While the advice should probably be to take things easier so that the stress levels aren’t so high, this issue does need attention pretty swiftly to get the best results.

Fertilisation
Fertilised
Non Fertilised
I
t is now widely appreciated that trees require certain essential nutrients to function and grow. A nutrient is an element that is involved in the metabolism of a tree, or necessary for a tree to complete its life cycle. For trees growing on a forest site, these nutrients are normally present in sufficient quantities in the soil. Landscape trees or urban trees, however, may be growing in soils that do not contain sufficient available nutrients for satisfactory growth and development.
Tree fertilisation can increase growth, reduce susceptibility to certain diseases and insects, and under certain circumstances, help reverse declining health. Common objectives of fertilisation include: 1) Overcome a visible nutrient deficiency. 2) Eliminate a deficiency not obviously visible that was detected through soil or foliar analysis. 3) Increase tree growth, flowering, or fruiting. 4) Increase the vitality of the tree. 5) Reduce potential injury from disease or insect infestation. laboratory analyses of the soil nutrient concentration. This will ensure that only the correct nutrients are applied to correct the
deficiency. By adding only the nutrients required, excess nutrients will not be added to the environment. The process of conducting analyses, setting plant health goals, and selecting a fertiliser to achieve this goal is called Prescription Fertilisation. Prescription fertilisation is a system unique to Bartlett Tree Experts 1. A range of soil samples are collected 2. The soil samples are analysed under laboratory conditions. 3. Once the soils analysis is complete the Laboratories develops a prescription based on the plant species, soil type, goals, and nutrient and pH levels.

BARTLETT TREE EXPERTS A Very Brown Hedge Indeed Aphids are one of the most common and troublesome of all garden insect pests. They attack a large number of garden plants throughout the country and are recently causing much disfigurement to ornamental conifer hedges. Commonly known as Greenfly and Blackfly, these aphids feed on hedges, sucking the sap of the plant and can spread several viruses, causing severe dieback. Cypress Aphid is currently troublesome and pre-dominantly affects conifer hedging. Damage inflicted on conifer hedges by the aphid Cinara cupressi is severe and can lead to large brown patches on the hedge. This leads to localised foliage death, reducing the aesthetic look of the hedge. As the aphid is active from May to October it is important to catch this problem early and apply treatments to stop its spread. At the first sign of brown patches call us for a free consultation and professional advice.

Propagating
roses
T
aking rose cuttings is an easy process as they will grow on their own roots. You can root the softwood cuttings in the open ground in early summer. The cuttings should be about 15-20cm (6-8in long). The advantage of a rooted cutting is the absence of suckers – all shoots belong to the variety being grown. Choose healthy stems of the current season’s growth and take off the lower leaves, leaving the bottom two-thirds of the stem bare, then trim off the bottom of the stem just below a leaf joint. Nip the growing tip out of the shoot, as the tips of rose cuttings are very soft and likely to develop fungal disease.
Alternatively, place four or five cuttings into a 20cm (8in) pot filled with seed compost and cover the pot with a large, loose polythene bag after watering them in. They can be kept in a shady spot and the compost should be kept moist. As soon as the rose cutting starts to grow new leaves – a sign of rooting – then gradually take the cover off and grow the plant on as a normal potted shrub. Cuttings should be well rooted by the autumn and rose plants can then be potted up individually, to be planted out next summer. If you plant them out before then, you risk them being smothered by weeds or being trodden on and snapped.
Dip the base of the cutting into hormone rooting powder before placing it into the ground. Take more than one cutting in case some don’t succeed and leave a space of at least 15cm (6in) between each.
Remember to look after your stock once you have increased it. Now is the height of the flowering season but also the time when pests and diseases turn up to ruin all your hard work. Watch out for blackspot, which looks like ink spots on the leaves and can destroy your roses. Mildew and rust can also be disastrous for roses and spraying may be the only solution.
If you are putting them straight into the ground they will need protecting with a mini cloche or a soft plastic drinks bottle cut in half to help build up the humidity underneath.
However, there are so many disease-resistant types of rose on the market now, it’s worth investing in a few to give you blemish-free, glorious roses in future.

BEDFORD
BLUES
W
ith a couple of months between Bedford Blues and the brand new Championship season, we continue to look at the new faces who will be at Goldington Road during 2017/18.
Another international running out is Welsh winger Chris Czekaj, 31, who played rugby for his home club Llandaff and made over 130 appearances for the Cardiff Blues. Chris has been capped internationally in every Wales age group, from U16s to U21s until gaining his first senior cap, as well as a try, against Canada in June 2005. Along with experience comes youth in the signing of Exeter Chiefs fly half Will Hooley and Northampton Saints winger, Howard Packman. Cambridge born Hooley, 24, is a former England Under 20 international who came through the Academy system at Northampton Saints before going on to make 14 first team appearances and scoring 77 points.
The Blues raided Jersey for a third time over the summer to sign back Rich Lane who was born in Bedford and played for the Junior Blues. Lane – who can play in the centre, on the wing or at fullback – was a member of Northampton’s Academy before signing for Bath where he made his debut against Exeter Chiefs in the 2011/12 LV=Cup.
Packman, 21, joined Bedford on loan in January but has now made the move a permanent one following some impressive displays in a Blues jersey. Howard took up the game of rugby at the young age of five at Wellingborough RFC before moving to Old Northamptonians two years later.
Another signing is London Scottish’s impress fly half, Harry Sheppard. The 21-year-old is a Moulton College graduate where he caught the eye of former Blue Jon Phillips and backs coach Paul Larkin but it was London Scottish who snapped him up and he went on to seamlessly make the transition into the first team.
England Saxons hooker Tom Lindsay is also on his way to the Blues after signing from Saracens. The 29-year-old impressed in a Blues jersey during the Mobbs Memorial game in March. Having come through the Academy at Saracens, Lindsay was selected to represent England Saxons in the 2010 Churchill Cup.
The new signings join Ben Adams, Dean Adamson, Justin Blanchet, Josh Buggea, Jordan Burns, Will Carrick-Smith, Elliot Clements-Hill, Ben Cooper, Ollie Dodge, Michael Le Bourgeois, Camilo Parilli-Ocampo, Ed Taylor and Paul Tupai have all put pen to paper on new deals.
