A VERY WARM WELCOME TO BEDFORD
Welcome to the 2018 edition of In & Around, in collaboration with The Bedford Association of Tour Guides. We hope you will enjoy discovering what Bedford and the surrounding areas have to offer. Bedford has a proud heritage and the 2018 edition explores the Blue Plaques; commemorative plaques marking people who lived in Bedford such as Ronnie Barker, Harold Abrahams and Etienne Stott as well as important world events WW1 and WW2.These plaques denote some of the fascinating history of the town and you can discover more history and artefacts of Bedford in the museums. Exploring Bedford is even better on foot with the guided town walks to educate and, further afield, there are many walking and cycle routtes to enjoy. There is a unique shopping experience to be experienced, with a wide blend of varied and unique independent retailers nestling alongside popular high street brands. The traditional market is still strong in the town, with Wednesday and Saturday food markets attracting many locals and visitors alike. The leisure and entertainment scene is full of variety with plenty of live music to be found alongside film, theatre and comedy nights, to mention but a few. When it comes to food, Bedford is spoilt for choice with plenty of excellent established restaurants to choose from, and the new Riverside North Development now offers a new alternative. With restaurants overlooking the beautiful Great River Ouse, it’s perfect for any occasion. Bedford boasts the some beautiful, spacious parks and open spaces, many of which are Green Flag. Stroll along the stunning Victorian riverside Embankment, enjoy a seasonal trip on the John Bunyan Community Boat or simply take in the air at one of the country parks. Within a short distance of the town, there are a number of famous country houses managed by either English Heritage, the National Trust or still their original families. Whatever you choose to explore, you are sure to enjoy your visit. Discover more on our brand new new website at www.inandaroundbedford.co.uk.

BLUE PLAQUES IN BEDFORD Walking along Bedford’s streets, if you look out for them, you can see commemorative plaques – some blue, some brown, older ones in bronze, even some carved on pavement slabs – hinting at people and events in the town’s fascinating history. The older ones tend to record significant events such as the rebuilding of the town bridge in 1813, the ending of its toll charges in 1835 or its widening in 1938-40. 6 In & Around Bedford 2018
John Bunyan, the town’s worldfamous religious author of the 1600s, is recorded at numerous places. At St John House in St John’s Street, where he was ‘born again’, a joint plaque records that he came under the influence of the Protestant minister John Gifford. His adult baptism by immersion in the river is marked at Duckmill Weir. The site of the cottage where he lived with his second wife and daughter (when not imprisoned for illegal preaching) is to be found in St Cuthbert Street. In Silver Street, a pavement plaque close to the ‘Two Faces’ sculpture marks the site where he suffered his 12 years of imprisonment in the County Gaol. Bedford’s other two outstanding sons, immortalised in St Paul’s Square, not only have plaques but also statues, namely Sir William Harpur, the town’s great benefactor, and John Howard, the prison reformer, after whom the present-day Howard League for Penal Reform is named. Working forward to more modern times, two well-known twentieth century entertainers were born or lived for a time in Bedford – comedy actor Ronnie Barker (of the Two Ronnies) and actor John Le Mesurier of Dad’s Army fame. Sportsmen Harold Abrahams, Olympic athlete (now remembered through the Chariots of Fire film) is remembered and Stephen ‘Etienne’ Stott, the Olympic canoeist is celebrated by a small plaque on the gold post box in St Paul’s Square. An unusual plastic canopy over the entrance to Church Arcade commemorates the names of other Bedford sportsmen and women: Martin Bayfield, Stephanie Cook, Gail Emms, Tim Foster, Geoffrey Millman, Derek ‘Budge’ Rogers and Matt Skelton. (Paula Radcliffe, Bedford’s world-class runner, is immortalised by a road sign on the Clapham side of the town on a stretch of the A6 road known as the Paula Radcliffe Way.)
For a land-locked county it is perhaps surprising that there are connections with Admiral William Smyth, sailor and astronomer and two famous polar explorers, recorded by commemorative wall plaques where they lived for a time in Bedford: Apsley Cherry-Garrard and Aeneas Macintosh. The First World War is remembered by a plaque in St John’s Street to the only Bedford-born recipient of the Victoria Cross, Private William Buckingham, an unassuming hero who was raised in Bedford Workhouse as a child. Close to that plaque is the sculptured relief of a mythical bird with a plaque recording the Great Flood of November 1823, on the wall of what used to be The Phoenix public house. Life in Bedfordshire during the Second World War is recognised with a blue plaque on the Corn Exchange facade recording the BBC’s music residency
in the early 1940s. The nearby bust of American band leader Glenn Miller is another reminder of the importance of music in maintaining morale during those difficult wartime years. Although it was secret at the time, we now know what a vital part Bletchley Park in Milton Keynes played in the war, listening in to enemy forces’ communications and decoding them. Bedford had its part in this through hosting intensive Japanese language training courses for specialist recruits. A plaque in De Parys Avenue commemorates both this and the BBC Staff Club from that wartime period. Trevor Huddleston, archbishop and anti-apartheid campaigner, not only has a bust sculpture in Silver Street but also a plaque at 44 Chaucer Road. Mark Rutherford, after whom the local secondary school is named, was the pen-name of Victorian writer William Hale White. Unusually, he has two plaques close together, an old one

and a newer one, on the High Street, facing the Howard statue. There are also two plaques to a childhood resident who became world-famous, at houses where the Italian scientist and radio pioneer, Guglielmo Marconi, lived at 42 Harpur Street and at 79 Bromham Road. Local nineteenth century architect John Usher, whose distinctive houses you can see in the town, has a plaque at Holly Lodge, a lovely private residence in The Grove. There are plaques also to buildings which have since disappeared such as the medieval Bedford Castle on the Embankment and to the Art-Deco Granada cinema on St Peter’s Street, now the site of a Lidl supermarket. Plaques to outstanding women in the town have until recently been almost non-existent. Margaret Stansfeld was remembered by her former physicaltraining teacher students with a plaque in Lansdowne Road. Now, Dora Carrington, the early-twentieth century
8 In & Around Bedford 2018
artist whose life was dramatized in the film “Carrington”, has a plaque in De Parys Avenue where she lived while attending the Girls High School. Dame Bertha Phillpotts, the Scandinavian scholar, Mistress of Girton College, Cambridge University and an active proponent of higher education for women, has a plaque at the Horne Lane entrance to the new Riverside Square. Other significant women with Bedford connections who have been recognised nationally but not celebrated locally are to be finally commemorated in the town in 2018. This is appropriate since it is the year of centenary celebrations of women getting the vote in this country. It is hoped that plaques will be unveiled to Amy Walmsley, the educationalist who devoted her life to developing primary education; Theresa Stannard, the popular watercolour painter of garden scenes; Charlotte Bousfield, the nineteenth century diarist and temperance campaigner; Sister Fanny Eagles, the Church of England deaconess who founded
St Etheldreda’s Home for Orphans in Bedford; and Hester Hawkins, astronomer and hymn writer. It is easy to walk past commemorative plaques when intent on getting from A to B but just to take our time and look out for them as we walk around Bedford can be very rewarding and introduce us to people, places and events worth finding more about. Fortunately, local historian Stuart Antrobus has listed them all and where to find them. Just look online via Bedfordshire Virtual Library, under Local History/Places/Bedford and you will find over 50 plaques. Thanks to Bedford town guide David Fowler there are also free-standing illustrated history interpretation boards located on pavements about the town, giving fascinating insights into the historic buildings and street scenes you can see around you. Treat yourself to a good look around Bedford’s streets, looking for these – you’ll be amazed at how much you can learn while enjoying a pleasant stroll round the county town.
The Harpur Trust has been enriching the lives of people in Bedford Borough for over 450 years. Giving grants to local community projects. Offering accommodation for older people. Supporting, promoting and providing education. Making social investments.

2018 MARKS THE 130TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE OPENING OF BEAUTIFUL
BEDFORD PARK
The History The park is located on former farm land owned by Robert De Pary’s who in the late 12th Century donated it to a newly formed charity called the Hospital of St John the Baptist. It was based in the grounds of St Johns Church in the St John’s area of Bedford. Whilst the charity continued for several centuries it was poorly run and it took an act of parliament in 1881 to transfer
the administration of its affairs to a Board of 12 Trustees. While these transactions were taking place, Joshua Hawkins Mayor of Bedford put forward the idea of a public recreation ground to Bedford Corporation and was generally accepted as a good idea although there were several suggestions with regard to its location.
It was finally agreed by the Board to allow the area of land on both sides of Gipsy Lane (now Park Avenue) to be used as a park provided the council paid for the boundary fencing, drainage, planting, and the general layout. In return, on completion, the Trustees would transfer the ownership of the land to the south of Gipsy Lane to the council for development. The income could then offset the costs of forming the park and the ancillary works.
The Design In 1881 local architect John Usher produced an initial layout for the park and William Barron & Son of Derby were awarded the contract to construct the park totalling 61 acres in area.
Barron’s signature layouts are ovals and circles, plus the feeling of being surrounded in trees and bushes one minute and wide open landscapes the next. These are all evident within Bedford Park today. 18,000 trees and shrubs were originally planted with virtually the same number remaining today.
Whilst the park was initially surrounded in metal fencing the vast majority of it has now been removed much of to help the war effort during WW2 but some of the original fencing is still in place between the park and the adjoining cemetery.
18,000 trees and shrubs were originally planted with virtually the same number remaining today. 12 In & Around Bedford 2018
The Opening The Grand Opening was on Wednesday 11th July 1888 at 1pm in front of the newly constructed main gates. The Park was opened by the Marquess of Tavistock assisted by Deputy Mayor Alderman. A group of school children sang a hymn called “Bedford” and after the opening, tours of the park took place and a flower show was held.
The Cricket Pavilion was built in 1896 but fell into disrepair and is currently not in use. The East Lodge was built circa 1901 and, like the West Lodge, is still used as residential accommodation. During the same period the Victorian Bandstand was built; originally with glass windows which were removed in subsequent years.
The lake has always been a feature of the park with its “waist” providing two distinct areas. In 1972 a fountain was added. Archery took place during the late 1800’s in the area now occupied by the tennis courts; located behind the Pavilion when the park first opened. This area is now the location for the Bedford Bowling Club. In the early 1960’s houses were built in the north west corner of the park to accommodate employees of Bedford Borough Council. The last building to be constructed in the park was the Robinson Indoor Swimming Pool built in 1969
www.noel.photography
The official party proceeded to Mill Street to lay the foundation stone for the new fire station (now 36 B Mill Street) and then onto the Embankment to open the newly construction iron Suspension Bridge over the river.
When the park was opened, there were only two buildings on the site; the West Lodge and the Pavilion. The Lodge as residential accommodation and the Pavilion as a restaurant / café.
Relax & Enjoy Bedford Park has for years provided a location for a multitude of uses. During Victorian times it was a place for rest and relaxation, somewhere to “promenade” on a Sunday afternoon. It was home for thousands of soldiers from the 51st Highland Division who were billeted in Bedford at the outbreak of WW1. The Pavilion was used as their “Naffie” (canteen), the Cricket Pavilion as
their stores and the grassed areas as a location for Sunday open air church services. In latter years, the park has played host to numerous sporting activities, open-air music concerts and theatrical productions. The Pavilion is currently thriving and providing much needed sustenance for the modern-day park visitor.

NEW EXHIBITION AT WOBURN ABBEY MARKING THE BICENTENARY OF HUMPHRY REPTON Recognised as the first person to invent and use the title ‘landscape gardener’, Humphry Repton regarded himself as the rightful successor to Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown. Repton produced over 400 designs and schemes for gardens great and small, but of these, he stated, “none were more fully realised than at Woburn Abbey”.
Exhibition – Humphry Repton: Art & Nature for the Duke of Bedford Open to the public between 23rd March and 28th October 2018, the new exhibition explores the fascinating relationship between Repton and one of his greatest clients. On public display for visitors to see for the first time will be his most elaborate and comprehensive ‘Red Book’, his famous presentation document of proposed designs. His Red Book for Woburn was commissioned in 1804 and illustrates his innovative plans for the Pleasure Grounds and Park, many of which were subsequently realised by the 6th Duke of Bedford. In addition, the exhibition will give guests the opportunity to discover Repton’s other works for the family including at the picturesque Devon estate of Endsleigh, Oakley House and Russell Square in London. Never before seen unexecuted designs will feature alongside works of art and archival treasures, which bring to life the creative legacy of Repton. There will also be Repton-related family trails, activities and events throughout the year.
Repton landscapes at Woburn Abbey Gardens Having explored the Repton’s legacy in the exhibition, visitors need only step outside to discover Repton’s beautiful landscape designs. Since 2004 the present Duke and Duchess of Bedford have been restoring many of Repton’s features in the Woburn Abbey Gardens. These include the folly grotto, the Cone House, the menagerie and the striking Chinesestyle pavilion, which was completed in 2011 and went on to win a Hudson’s Heritage Award. In 2013, Woburn’s project to restore the 19th Century Humphry Repton landscape won the “Best Restoration of a Georgian Garden” at the Georgian Group Architectural Awards. Martin Towsey, Estate Gardens Manager said: ‘I am proud that Woburn Abbey is marking the bicentenary of Humphry Repton with this captivating exhibition, which represents the culmination of 14 years of hard work by the Woburn Abbey Gardens team to restore the gardens to their former glory.’ Matthew Hirst, Curator of the Woburn Abbey Collection said: ‘Never before has the Red Book for Woburn been on public display, nor has there been an opportunity to show it alongside his other designs for the Duke of Bedford. This exhibition will give a fantastic insight into one of the nation’s greatest gardening influences.’ Woburn Abbey is open daily from 23rd March until 28th October. The exhibition is included in the price of your ticket. To find out more, visit www.woburnabbey.co.uk/Repton

Be inspired. Artist Alex Chinneck, renowned for his larger than life masterpieces, learnt to think big with inspiration from his teachers.
...by putting pupils at the heart of everything we do St Andrew’s School and Rushmoor School both have a long and successful history and believe children learn best when they feel happy and secure. We offer nurturing environments, with small class sizes and strong pastoral support, working closely with parents to ensure every child has an enjoyable and rewarding education. Energetic and inspirational teaching is tailored to the needs of the individual. Younger pupils work successfully in mixed classes of girls and boys, whilst older pupils study in a single sex environment allowing them to excel in all areas of the curriculum without any negative pressures. Our Sixth Form pupils join for a combined sixth form experience. At every age the happiness of our pupils is the foundation of our aim to nurture a lifelong interest in learning, one which encompasses the full range of intellectual,

HERITAGE 1
Bromham Mill
3
The present mill is an 18th or early 19th century rebuilding in brick, timber and stone on the site of earlier mills. It had two waterwheels, one wooden and undershot driving three pairs of stones, and the other iron and breastshot driving two. However, only the latter remains and was restored in 1980. From the 1930s, due to low water flow, an oil engine was needed to give power with electricity supplying the other machinery. Much of the machinery is still visible inside the mill. There is an onsite cafe, a picnic site and children’s outdoor play area and is well known for its annual Apple Day in the month of October. Bridge End, Bromham MK43 8LP Tel 01234 824330 www.friendsofbromhammill.org.uk

Castle Mound
The Castle Mound is all that remains of Bedford castle, an 11th century earthwork motte and bailey fortress, destroyed by Henry III after his siege of 1224. Built by Henry I in a position overlooking the River Great Ouse, a shell keep was added later on, to be followed by a round tower with curtain walls. The castle acted as an important administrative centre, used bizarrely by several Sheriffs of Buckinghamshire as their official seat. Today the motte still stands, forming part of an archaeological park restored in 2009. The mound is located adjacent to The Higgins, in Bedford town centre, just off The Embankment.

Elstow Abbey
Elstow Abbey was founded in 1078 by the Countess Judith, niece of William the Conqueror. It became the eighth richest of the 106 Benedictine nunneries existing at the time. It retains many Norman features and in its hey-day, the building was twice its recent size. It is unusual in having a completely separate, 13th century, bell tower. John Bunyan was also baptised in the font to be found in the abbey. Church End, Elstow, Beds MK42 9XT Tel 01234 261477 abbeyelstow@gmail.com www.elstow-abbey.org.uk

Mowsbury Hillfort
Mowsbury Hillfort and Hill Meadow are unknown treasures to most Bedfordians. The Hillfort is a scheduled monument and county wildlife site. It is owned by Bedford Borough Council and managed as a public amenity site. The early Iron Age Hillfort was built with a single defensive bank and ditch around the perimeter, there is a medieval moated site inside the Hillfort. On view is a wide variety of habitats including wild flowers, mixed deciduous woodland, a series of ponds and a moat. The Friends of Putnoe Wood & Mowsbury Hillfort help manage the site for all to enjoy. For more information visit putnoemowsburyfriends.org.uk

Stevington Mill
Constructed around a central post so that it can be turned to face into the wind, this impressive postmill was built in the 18th century and is the only complete windmill left in the county. The mill operated commercially, mostly grinding cattle feed, until 1939. For an inside view of the postmill, visitors can obtain a key from the Royal George pub in Silver Street, Stevington. A small returnable deposit is required. 2 Windmill Lane, Stevington MK43 7QZ

St Pauls Church
Some evidence exists for the founding of St Paul’s Church as a new minster by King Offa (d.AD796) to serve the inhabitants of his new fortified urban burgh. The church mentioned by name in the Domesday book was a house of secular canons in the eleventh century, ruled by an abbot in 971, and the church in which Oskytel, Archbishop of York was buried in 956, indicating that St Paul’s was an important minister church from at least the tenth century onwards. BEDFORD RIVER FESTIVAL 1978 ~ 2018
CELEBRATING 40 YEARS
14TH – 15TH JULY
In 1976 when members of the Bedford 18 Group, part of a then thriving national social organisation for 18 – 30 year olds, organised a raft race for other 18 plus groups and a small number of local firms and organisations, they were not to know that this event would grow into being part of the largest, most popular biennial event in the Bedford calendar for many years to come. The event was a great success for both spectators and participants alike and it was not long before enthusiasm for rafting enabled two annual separate events to take place- one for locals and the other for the 18 Plus groups – with Bedford soon becoming the host town for the National 18 Plus Raft Race. In 1978, the Group were asked by Bedford Borough Council if it could incorporate the annual Bedford Raft Race within the river events programme for the forthcoming River Festival to commemorate the completion of a navigable route of the River Gt. Ouse from Bedford to the Wash. This request was eagerly accepted. A Race Organiser was appointed and the Bedford River Festival Committee was born. The Group continued to organise the Festival Raft Races for a number of years before handing over the reins in the mid nineties to The Rotary Club of Bedford Park, who are still the driving force behind the present-day races.

Over the years, the family- friendly festival has increase in size and stature, growing from what seemed at first to be a large village fete to being the second largest free outdoor event in the UK after the Notting Hill Carnival, attracting over 250,000 visitors. Held over a weekend in July, it has many events and attractions including bands on the festival main stage, 2 community stages, an acoustic stage, a road parade, boat shows/races, a raft race for local teams and a spectacular firework display.
The second largest free outdoor event in the UK!
Along with the normal attractions of the fun fair, the River Festival also hosts the sports village, for local sports, dance and community clubs to demonstrate their skills. The festival also offers an incredible range of delicious food from all cultures. Many local community groups and businesses have stands and there
Whilst legislation infrastructure and health & safety requirements have necessitated change over the years for the festival, it has always maintained its community spirit and still involves many clubs, organisations and societies from Bedford and the surrounding areas, overseen by the officers and members of the main sponsor, Bedford Borough Council. It is also widely acknowledged that an event of this size could not exist with out the financial support of local companies and representatives still offering support to become sponsors, partners, or friends of the festival. Each festival attracts more mooring applications, with over 120 boats of differing shapes and sizes now attending. Members of the Bedford Boat Club have been welcomed from the outset and, additionally in more
recent years, members of the Ouse Valley Boat Club from St Neots, the Middle level Watermans Club from March and boaters from the Priory Marina in Bedford. The amount and time and effort that goes into decorating and illuminating their boats for the various parades and processions never ceases to amaze, and the number of narrow boats normally associated with canals has also steadily increased over the years, enough to now warrant their own parade. Building on the success of the previous festivals, the site for 2018 has been extended to encompass St Mary’s Gardens and the recently constructed Riverside Development.

GREENSAND COUNTRY AN ISLAND OF DISTINCT, BEAUTIFUL AND LOVED COUNTRYSIDE It may be on your doorstep, but how much do you really know about the unique local environment, recently branded Greensand Country? Defined by the Greensand Ridge, a band of higher ground stretching from Leighton Buzzard to Gamlingay, which rises out of the surrounding clay vales, the area contains all of Bedfordshire’s remaining heathland, more than half of its woodland and more historic parkland than anywhere else in the country. Our landscape is rich in wildlife and cultural heritage just waiting to be explored. The woods, parklands and miles of footpaths and bridleways make Greensand Country perfect for days out on foot, bike and horseback. Greensand Country’s parks and open spaces are perfect for family visits, letting the little ones play outside, walking the dog or settling down with a summer picnic.
This year we will be hosting the first Greensand Country Festival, taking place across the landscape from 26 May to 3 June. Please see further details of the festival within the events listings. The Greensand Country Landscape Partnership is led by the Bedfordshire Rural Communities Charity and the Greensand Trust, and is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. It is made possible by D OR DF BE National Lottery players. Without Wilstead them we couldn’t fund Haynes Ampthill Marston Great Park Moretaine the project.
