previous collection that we would like to share with the community. So from March 4th onwards keep an eye out for our “Brunstane Book Trees”, little book gifts attached to trees around Magdalene. If you see one, feel free to take it, read it or gift it to someone who might like it. Usually on World Book Day, we celebrate by sharing books, our favourite characters and listen to some of our favourite authors to show our children how important reading is. While we are not all in school, we hope this will be a good way to celebrate the beauty of books. So keep an eye out for the Brunstane Book Trees, and feel free to pick yourself a book!

GUERRILLA GARDENERS LAUNCHED! By Grieg Kelbie Imagine waking up, opening your curtains, and not seeing a dumped mattress, broken chair, overgrown grass and litter as far as the eye can see. What if I told you we could make that happen? We just have to take matters into our own hands. If like me, and several other members of our community, you have had enough. Join the Magdalene Guerrilla Gardeners. A Guerrilla refers to the actions or activities performed in a spontaneous way, often without permission. Add in a bit of gardening to the mix and what you have is a Guerrilla Gardener. Guerrilla Gardening is about enriching our local environment and taking matters into our own hands. This time last year we were just put into lockdown and our community responded heroically. We saw people coming together to help the vulnerable in the area. Whether that was doing a shop for an elderly neighbour or delivering packed lunches, people chipped in and helped.

Sadly, the issue of waste and fly tipping has only become more apparent and exposed. There is now light at the end of the tunnel with the covid-19 pandemic and as we head into summer now is the time to get out and tidy up. Magdalene Matters! If we care about the place we live, all is not lost, let’s act to make the area a more inviting, attractive place that promotes health and community wellbeing. Let's weed, tidy, plant and litter pick! Edinburgh City Council is stretched due to underfunding of public services and the level of maintenance they can provide is declining. Party politics aside, we as individuals have a collective responsibility to our community, our children who will grow up and inherit the space and our natural environment. Magdalene Guerrilla Gardeners has already started strongly. On Saturday 13 March, lots of excited volunteers came out for a very successful litter pick event. In a short space of time, adults and kids filled dozens of bags of rubbish, had a laugh and felt better after doing it. As we head into summer we want to build on this success: More litter picking, community gardening by reclaiming greenspaces, tidying up shared spaces and campaigning for more council services in Magdalene. This group is for everyone and we want to hear your ideas for the area. Get your gardening gloves on and join in. Imagine what else we could achieve if we all worked together! To get involved you can e-mail us: magdalenegg21@gmail.com or join our Facebook Group – just search ‘Magdalene Guerrilla Gardeners’ on Facebook.
