It’s commercials to the fore as CV Show takes centre stage Our June issue has an unashamedly commercial bias, as we run through all the action from this year’s CV Show in Birmingham. Vauxhall made a welcome return to the Show with its all-new Vivaro. Built on the PSA platform shared with Citroen, Peugeot and Toyota, the new panel van looks set to give the Transit Custom a run for its money. Chinese-backed LDV launched a new small electric van, the EV30. We chatted with LDV boss Mark Barrett to find out more about the brand’s push into electric. The highlight at Isuzu was the reveal of a new range-topping D-Max, the XTR, arguably the first lifestyle pick-up in the range. Elsewhere, Citroen and Peugeot showed off their first large electric vans, the Relay and Boxer, and Ford its latest Ranger, the Raptor, as well as its improved Transit. Toyota gave us a glimpse of its new small panel van, the Proace City, as well as a revamped Hilux Invincible. There was also plenty of attention at the Volkswagen CV stand where an electric Crafter and Transporter took centre stage, while MAN showed off its new TGE minibus and flat frame chassis cowl. Mitsubishi took the wraps off the Shogun Sport SVP, Fiat Professional showed both a Ducato ambulance and a ‘Green Thumb’ Doblo while SsangYong was rightly proud of its emergency vehicles, a Rexton police car and a Musso in the livery of Highways England. Between all the unveilings and presentations we also caught up with a number of franchise movers and shakers at the Show who took time out to answer our Q & As. On the car front, we visited a castle to test drive the new Range Rover Evoque and hit the road in the Hyundai Tucson. Lexus is at the forefront when it comes to hybrid cars and its latest saloon, the ES, is also tested this month. An electric Golf that looks and feels like a normal Golf? That would be the Volkswagen E Golf, which we also tested for this issue. Finally, there’s praise a’plenty for the Volvo V60 and we take a look at the new Mazda3 and latest BMW 3 Series. Company Car & Van at the CV Show This year’s CV Show saw record crowds of fleet managers and van users flock to the NEC in Birmingham to check out the latest from the commercial world. CC&V’s Andrew Walker was among them, and as well as running his eye over the latest models to be released he caught up with some of the CV world’s most important
people to find out what the future holds for their company. Over the next few pages we’ll introduce some of the new models unveiled, and find out what changes we can all look forward to from the major players in the UK’s commercial vehicle sector.
Peugeot takes wraps off new Boxer Electric The CV Show saw a world first as the exciting all-electric version of the Peugeot Boxer’s was unveiled for the first time. The new model gives Peugeot an emissionfree entrant in the CV sector for the first time and continues the company’s electrification strategy, which will see all vehicles offered with an electrified variant by 2023. The Boxer Electric models will be produced at the Sevel plant in Val di Sangro, Italy and converted by partner BD Auto. It wasn’t the only new Peugeot to take a bow, either. Also under the spotlight was the multi-award-winning Partner, voted Company Car & Van’s Small Van of the Year for 2019. Two models were on display: the Partner BlueHDi 100 manual 950 Professional Long, the largest variant of the Partner offering up to 4.4m3 of load space with the Multi-Flex seat folded and a payload of 954kg; the second was a Standard length Partner BlueHDi 100 Asphalt. The Partner is available in S, Grip, Professional and Asphalt specification. The Professional model displayed featured a
long list of standard equipment including air conditioning, rear parking sensors, cruise control with variable speed limiter, automatic electronic parking brake and a Multi-Flex modular folding passenger bench seat with pivoting writing table and load-through bulkhead. The Asphalt specification adds further acoustic insulation, automatic windscreen wipers, 16-inch alloy wheels, Peugeot Connected 3D Navigation and Surround Rear Vision with front and rear parking sensors, passenger side and rear cameras. It was also interesting to see that the French
manufacturer still has a lot of faith in its popular Expert range, with a Standard length model on display featuring the BlueHDi 120 engine with Stop and Start technology. The line-up was completed by the most popular variant of the Boxer panel van, the 335 L3 H2 BlueHDi 130 Professional. Professional trim includes manual air conditioning for the cab, full steel bulkhead, cruise control, rear parking aid, DAB digital radio with touchscreen navigation and Bluetooth® connectivity. L3H2 Professional models offer a 1,525kg payload and 13m3 of load space.
You’ll be converted to the MAN TGE MAN’s major announcement at the CV Show was the unveiling of its new MAN TGE Flatframe chassis cowl chassis. Sitting a full 190 mm lower than the standard frame TGE chassis cab and specially designed with ease of use and bespoke body build in mind, the walk-through nature of the chassis cowl cab design makes this vehicle the ideal base for conversion into low height Luton and box bodies, campervan or motorhome. Powered by the efficient and reliable 140 hp (103 kW) 2.0 litre four-cylinder turbo diesel engine, capable of producing 340 Nm, the Commercial Vehicle Show TGE flatframe chassis cowl is based on the 4490 mm wheelbase variant, it uses a six-speed manual gearbox and is front wheel drive. Another highlight was the news that MAN was entering the passenger-carrying sector in the UK with the arrival of the New TGE 17-seater Minibus. needs of the individual operator, the TGE Minibus exhibit is configured to seat 17 (one driver plus 16 seated passengers, or 10 seated passengers plus two wheelchair users; or 14 seated passengers plus one wheelchair user). It is powered by a tractable, efficient and reliable 180 hp (134 kW) 2.0 litre fourcylinder bi-turbo diesel engine, capable of producing 410 Nm. It is based on the 4490 mm wheelbase variant of the TGE with extended overhang. It uses a six-speed manual gearbox and is rear wheel drive. www.companycarandvan.co.uk

D-Max rebrand takes Isuzu to a new level Andrew Walker chats to Isuzu UK’s Managing Director William Brown about changes to its best-selling pick-up, the D-Max – and how down-sizing its power unit has not diminished its appeal Andrew Walker: The CV Show saw Isuzu rebrand the D-Max range. What was your thinking behind this and will it mean that you’re now looking to sell more vehicles into the fleet sector? William Brown: During the next six-eight weeks we are re-aligning how we market the Isuzu D-Max range. Rather than a two-way split (Utility/Premium), we will be positioning and marketing the Isuzu D-Max pick-up range as follows:The Business Range – Fit for purpose, ready for work. Available in Single Cab, Extended Cab and Double Cab options. These are the currently Utility Models. The All-Purpose Range – Fully equipped for work and play. This will encompass the Eiger, Yukon and Utah models. The Adventure Range – Adventure awaits. Go find it. Covers the Blade, XTR launched at the CV Show and the AT35. The majority of Utility models are purchased by fleet customers and as such need their own defined area. The Isuzu website, brochures, POS and all marketing communications will reflect this range change. The current model names will remain the same. Fleet is an area where Isuzu can add tremendous value and we see this as a natural area of growth for us.

AW: How did you decide on the names for each sector ? WB: The main reasons for doing this were to provide easier access to information on a relevant models to our different customer groups. This range re-assignment means we can put clear water between our product offerings, increase relevancy and better match the needs of our various target audiences. It also broadens Isuzu D-Max’s appeal, from 100 per cent workhorse customers to more lifestylebased customers. The revised range-naming convention better matches a more fragmented pick-up market with a wider customer typology. AW: It’s two years since the D-Max was relaunched with a 1.9 engine. Has the smaller
engine affected sales in any sector and conversely, have you seen a growth of sales in another area with the 1.9? WB: The D-Max took two more awards at the CV Show this year, that’s 12 in less than 18 months. The 1.9 engine has made no difference to the Isuzu D-Max’s amazing capability. In fact, fleet buyers prefer the new lighter Euro VI engine as it doesn’t require AdBlue and is fine for LEZ and ULEZ. There was a perception problem around the 1.9 with a limited number of customers but once a test drive was taken it was fine. We are ahead of other manufacturers with our 1.9 engine, there will be downsizing across the board in the pick-up sector. It’s really about customers getting used to smaller engines across passenger vehicles, LCV’s are simply following that trend and Isuzu is ahead of the curve. AW: Is Isuzu planning to launch any D-Max conversion in the near future? WB: As demonstrated at the CV Show, where we showed conversions for the RAC, SSE and BT Fleet, the Isuzu D-Max is a very flexible pick-up that can be adapted for very particular customer requirements but still maintain its awesome reliability and durability. This is an area where Isuzu is a strong contender and we are building a reputation as being the best base pick-up for these specialist conversions. There are no current plans to make these part of the range but rather, we deal with these on a case-by-case basis. www.companycarandvan.co.uk

LDV’s EV30 takes the game away from the opposition Andrew Walker caught up with Mark Barrett, General Manager, LDV UK & Ireland, to hear more about its exciting new e-Van, the EV30 Andrew Walker: One of the stars of the CV Show was your new EV, the EV30. When will it be available to order from your UK dealer network and will supply be a problem when it does arrive? Mark Barrett: The new EV30, which is our EV80’s ‘little brother’, will be available to order from Q1 2020. LDV vans are manufactured by SAIC Maxus, the largest automotive company in China which produces more than six million vehicles each year. Currently, the EV80 is one of very few OEM vehicles on the road that is available for order, right now, regardless of order size. Once the EV30 becomes available, we envisage a similar situation in relation to supply, despite the strong anticipated demand. AW: When we drove your EV80 last year we awarded it with our EV Van of the Year Award, primarily because of its range of 100 miles and the speed to recharge it. What’s the range of the EV30 and how fast can it be charged? MB: The EV30 will be fitted with a highcapacity lithium-iron battery offering two battery packs; a 35kWh battery, which offers a

Rapid battery charging time is 45 minutes with a full AC charge in five hours, which can be done using off-peak, cheap rate electricity to maximise cost savings. The AC charging can be used on either a single phase or three-phase charger. AW: With the new ULEV zone in London, does LDV now have a Euro6 diesel model that customers can buy?
MB: Yes, we are delighted to confirm our Euro6 models, which include a new facelift and colour range, offering even more choice for customers. AW: How is the growth of your UK LDV dealer network progressing? MB: We’ve a really strong network of dealers across the UK and Ireland and other RHD markets, offering excellent geographic reach. But what’s really important to us is the quality of the dealers and that includes ensuring an outstanding after sales service. We have a dedicated team led by industry experts Bill Laidlaw and Peter Jackson who support and work with the dealers helping ensure consistency of service and delivery for our customers. EV30 lights up show with a range to shock rivals As Company Car & Van discussed with LDV UK & Ireland General Manager Mark Barrett (see pg 8), one of the major highlights of the CV Show in Birmingham this year was the launch of a second electric van by LDV, the LDV EV30. The new vehicle joins the larger LDV electric option, the EV80, in LDV’s line-up. The new EV30 will be in direct competition with the likes of the Renault Kangoo ZE and Nissan’s e-NV200. It gives the relatively new Chinese-backed brand two electric vans which have been brought to market far quicker than most of the established CV manufacturers have managed. The EV30 is built in China, with the UK the first export market it will be launched into when it arrives in 2020. It comes in long and short wheelbase variants. Interestingly, LDV claims a maximum range of up to 200 miles on a single charge, with the 53kWh battery fitted, which would make it comfortably ahead on range in the
sector. There’s also a cheaper version on offer, with a 35kWh battery, with a claimed driving range of 127 miles, which is still impressive. Fast charging the lithium-ion power pack is
claimed to take 45 minutes, while an AC charge takes five hours. The EV30 looks not unlike the Nissan e-NV200, even featuring the charging flap in the front like the Nissan. An 85kW (114bhp) electric motor drives the front wheels. The van has a cargo volume of five cubic metres in SWB length and in the LWB model, comes with six cubic metres of space. The long version is extended by 600mm between the axles. The standard van offers a 600kg payload, while the long version has a more impressive 1000kg on offer. Access comes via twin barn-style rear doors, twin sliding side doors and for passengers, the option of a two or three-seat cabin. The EV30 will go on sale in the UK at the start of 2020, with prices starting at £22,000 making it a very attractive proposition, in what is bound to be a continuing growth area.

SsangYong Motors UK made its second appearance at this year’s CV Show. Specialising in 4x4 pick-ups and SUVs, the brand showcased vehicles that illustrated both diversity and versatility, ideally suited to the fleet market. SsangYong’s dedicated fleet support team showed off special versions of two of its best-sellers, the award-winning Musso 10 | June 2019 | Company Car & Van
pick-up truck and Rexton SUV. The Musso was liveried up in the colours of Highways England while the Rexton came in full police car mode. Nick Laird, SsangYong Motors UK, said: “Over the past 18 months, we’ve implemented a dedicated fleet support team and a strong fleet strategy to strengthen our fleet business, and to develop relationships

Developed for off-road enthusiasts and drivers who want a vehicle to complement their lifestyle, this professional pick-up boasts authentic capability with a bespoke Pedders suspension upgrade as standard and substantial kerb appeal with a sophisticated body kit and aggressive styling. The Isuzu D-Max is renowned for being tough, strong and reliable but this existing capability has now been taken to the next level with a bespoke Pedders suspension and brake system engineered specifically for XTR. The dramatic front bumper guard, bonnet protector and headlight frames give XTR an arresting presence which continues around the truck. Imposing wheel arch extensions contribute to XTR’s assertive stance and, with the lozenge shaped insert, provide the first flash of vibrant green colour coding that is repeated throughout the pick-up. A rear bumper and tailgate spoiler complete the body kit, which is Raptor-coated in a durable black finish. Designed to prevent rocks and stones damaging the bodywork, the durable textured black finish doesn’t show marks or scratches and provides extra grip to the step surface. Exclusive to XTR, 6-spoke, satin black, 17” alloy wheels have a fluted, deep dish design and embossed XTR logo. A matching satin black centre cap has discreet dark grey font and particular attention to detail has been given to this unique alloy wheel as the centre cap text and XTR logo on the spoke are perfectly aligned when the tyre valve is positioned at the base of the wheel. Available in Splash White, Titanium Silver Met, Obsidian Grey Mica and Cosmic Black Mica. As a final indulgence, each bespoke XTR steering wheel is individually finished with green overstitching that is sewn on by hand. Andrew Walker loves what VW has done with its latest high-class pick-up, the Amarok Highline The popularity of pick-ups shows no sign of abating and that’s especially true if you’re lucky enough to drive a Volkswagen Amarok. When VW relaunched its pick-up, it decided to offer only a 3.0 litre engine. The range topping 3.0 V6 Highline TDI 4Motion made its way to Company Car and Van Towers recently and despite the pick-up ride and so-so fuel economy, I am missing it already. Being more of an on-road pick-up driver, it’s safe to say that the 3.0 Highline is at the top of the class when it comes to pick-ups. With a massive 580Nms of torque on offer at between 1,400-3,000 revs, this 3,290kg monster will take you from 0-62mph in just 7.4 seconds. Cue a massive smile. Climb aboard and although you know you’re in a pick-up, the Amarok interior has a distinctly car-like ambience, with much of the design and layout familiar from other Volkswagen products. The Highline offers heated leather seats, a leather gear shift and multi-function steering wheel, climatronic air-con, cruise control and a useful four 12v sockets in the cargo area. There’s decent sized storage bins in all the doors. These contain a moulding to hold a can or bottle. There’s also a lidded bin and two cup holders between the front seats in front of an armrest, with even cup holders for the rear occupants, and a cubby hole at the bottom of the dash and a tray on top of it with a 12v power point. Throw in a lockable glove box, a sunglasses compartment and storage drawers under the front seats and you really are spoilt for choice. The driver’s seat and steering wheel are height adjustable and the rear centre passenger bench seat comes with a proper three-point seat belt. This bench can also be folded back and held in place with straps to create a larger space if needed. It also features three head rests. Highline also has bi-xenon headlamps with LED daytime running lights, front and rear parking sensors, with a rear view camera, App-Connect, darkened rear light clusters Voice Control, heated and powered wing mirrors and privacy glass. Also fitted to our Highline was the Discover Media navigation system, with a 6.33” touchscreen and voice enhancer, though it is an additional £684. DAB radio and Bluetooth connectivity are also part of the system: the graphics were clear and concise, and it was easy to use, too. My i-Phone connected first
time through Bluetooth and I utilised Apple CarPlay through VW’s connected Apps. Interior quality is excellent, with tough plastics where tough plastics are needed – door pockets, seat edging – and softer, more car-like finishes on top of the dash. Only the Mercedes X-Class interior looks and feels classier. There’s plenty of room for five adults in the cab and I really like the large rear window which gives the driver a clear view of the back of the truck and the load bed. Talking of the load bed, it’s one of the largest of any of the double-cab pick-ups available in the UK, with a volume of 2.5 square metres. Because the double-cab offers 1.22 metres between the wheel arches, you can fit a Euro pallet in sideways. All versions of the Amarok carry in excess of one tonne, so customers can reclaim VAT if they’re registered. Customers can add some extras to the load bay too, including an electric tow bar £300, four load lashing rings £42, a protective coating for the load bed £810, plus you can add soft or hard top tonneau covers. It does lag behind the pulling power of the Toyota Hilux, which will tow 3,200kg, as well as the 3,500kg towing output you’ll get if you buy an Isuzu D-Max, Nissan Navara. Mercedes-Benz X-Class or Ford Ranger. The Amarok is protected by a three-year 60,000 mile warranty, three-year paint and 12 year body protection and includes UK and European road side assistance. The engine is fitted with LongLife synthetic oil, aimed at reducing servicing from 12,500 mile to up to 25,000 miles, which has to be a good thing. Sensors in the vehicle work out when a service is due and VW maintain that using LongLife oil will increase fuel economy by an average of 2.7 per cent. A week and almost 300 miles of very enjoyable driving, saw us average 27.9 mpg, with the official claimed combined economy being 33.6mpg. So not too bad. CO2 emissions are 220g/km. We didn’t go off-road in that week, nor did we utilise the load bed, as many Amarok customers won’t do either. The Amarok V6 on road is pure fun to drive. Yes, the rear bench when the Amarok is unladen offers up a bumpy ride, but up front it’s not at all bad and I really haven’t had so much fun in a pick-up before. The V6 doesn’t just fly, but rocket-launches from a standing start, giving me the largest
smile in the UK. On the motorway and in cruise control, it will also sit happily and quietly at 70mph. The eight-speed auto gear box is pure class as well. With its car-like drive-ability, it’s much improved on the original Amarok. Add in the high levels of standard spec and safety features plus excellent build quality and Amarok customers really are on to a good thing. Are there any negatives? Well if you want this model you’ll be coughing up £42,857 (£35,765 before vat) and it isn’t quite as practical a workhorse as some of the competition. Where a Hilux or D-Max, Navara or Ranger can be used across the mid-West, the Amarok is much more a pick-up for the mean streets of Silicon Valley and Palo Alto, a pick-up that you can drive while wearing a suit with sneakers and not just a checked shirt and work boots. Yes please!
Verdict It’s a heavyweight fight at the top and the Amarok is right up there with the best. Great performer on the road and if that’s where your pick-up will stay, an outstanding choice CC&V RATING: N N N N N

Aftersales care proving key to sharp rise in VW commercial sales David Hanna, recently promoted from head of fleet to head of service and parts for Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, spoke to Andrew Walker to discuss the company’s plans for its future in the CV sector Andrew Walker: It’s been an exciting couple of years for Volkswagen Commercials, especially with the launch of your latest Crafter. We know that you wanted to sell more of your large vans than its predecessor achieved. How has that panned out and have you made any inroads into previously uncharted waters as far as sales are concerned? David Hanna: Crafter sales are going really well – we sold just under 6,500 in 2018 vs 5,221 in the previous year, and by the end of the year we had completed the phased rollout of all the models. Crafter is different to a Caddy or Transporter: it’s not an overnight sell, but we are starting to see the results now with deals with companies like Parcelforce and Homeserve. What’s clear is that the vehicle is important, but as if not more essential for these large fleets is the wraparound care that goes with it. We’re designing bespoke packages for all our big fleets and that’s winning us new customers.
AW: For our readership of SMEs, your Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ conversion programme makes the buying process much easier for customers. Have you noticed an increase in sales into our sector on the back of introducing this? DH: Yes. We’re seeing a turnaround in our conversions business with an increase in mobile workshop/breakdown/tyre replacement sales, plus new solutions in refrigerated vehicles and minibuses which are all markets with considerable potential. It’s not just the availability but also the change in process, with all Van Centres now able and keen to sell converted products. Working with a bank of recognised converters we can offer a one-stop-shop, single invoice, single warranty and aftersales support for customers. That’s what makes the difference and allows them to buy with confidence from us.
AW: You’ve also introduced a new converter recognition programme that has extended your portfolio of off-the-shelf and bespoke conversions. Has this encouraged more SME’s to consider the Volkswagen CV range ? DH: Yes – see above! AW: This issue contains an Amarok review. Is your pick-up selling well and have you had much uptake on your entry level model? DH: Yes, the Amarok is doing well. With increased supply we sold just under 3,500 last year, over 17 per cent up on 2017. We sell the entry level model but the higher spec versions are where the volume comes. Special editions in particular, such as the Aventura, really appeal to Amarok customers and having the V6 engine in all our models boosts the model’s popularity.

Vivaro delivers on every level Derek Wilson, LCV Director at Vauxhall, believes the launch of the new Vivaro will put the company into the driving seat in the commercial vehicle sector Company Car and Van: Undoubtedly the star of the CV Show was the new Vauxhall Vivaro. When will the new model be on sale from your Van dealerships? Derek Wilson: The new model is on sale now with first deliveries expected in the summer. CC&V: We’ve had several readers asking us about the PSA Group Vivaro and how it differs from the outgoing Renault-based model. What would you tell them, and how do you think the new version out-performs the outgoing one? DW: The all-new Vivaro is a class-leading British-built van. To start with, compared with the outgoing van, the new model carries up to 19 per cent more payload and has a towing weight 25 per cent greater than before at 2,500kgs. It’s also more efficient than the market leader. Equipped with the 100PS 1.5-litre engine, the standard wheelbase Vivaro has, provisionally, 22 per cent-lower emissions than the market leader and 20 per cent lower than the number two best-seller. The same engine with 120PS – again, provisionally – has 27 per cent fewer emissions than the market leader. And with a payload of up to 1457kgs, that’s equivalent to the market leader and 14 per cent

better than the number two in the marker. On the longer L2 version, comparable payload is three per cent better than market leader at 1417kgs. Economy, low emissions, payload capability and load capacity: these will resonate with van users probably more than anything else. Factor in the breadth of the new range – three trims, six powertrains and five body options – as well as a driving experience that would find favour with most new car drivers, and you have a package that makes our goal of a 25 per cent increase in LCV sales look not quite so ambitious after all… CC&V: We drove the new Combo last year and really liked it, awarding it our Small Van of the Year award for 2019. How has new Combo been received by fleet and small businesses, and are your sales going well? DW: We’ve seen huge growth in the last year: Vauxhall’s overall LCV sales have risen by 28 per cent, year-to-date, with 8,000 sales in the first quarter alone – more than any other European market. But New Vivaro will add to that growth in the UK, strengthening its position as Number One in segment for small business users by 12 per cent this year. These sales will make a significant
contribution to Groupe PSA’s goal across all its European markets to increase LCV sales by 25 per cent. That’s an unprecedented rate of growth for our business. And Vauxhall – representing Europe’s second largest van market – is very much in the driving seat. Of course, thanks to our new and refreshed LCV range – the new Combo (this year’s International Van of the Year, which alone has seen a 68 per cent growth in sales YTD), the revised Movano, and the new Vivaro – we are well placed. And we’ve made sure that our network can support our future sales growth, too. CC&V: For short city-based journeys, will Vauxhall be introducing any plug-in-hybrid or EV commercial vehicles to it’s CV range in the very near future? DW: With the new Vivaro, Vauxhall continues to implement its PACE! strategic plan by investing in growing market segments with high volumes. Vauxhall will offer a purely electric version in 2020, another milestone on the journey to electrifying the brand. We’ve already had a lot of interest from customer so we are very much looking forward to its launch next year.

CV Show welcomes the third generation Vivaro – a true class leader that delivers on both load capacity and performance
Vauxhall celebrated its return to the CV Show in style with the world premiere of the all-new British-built Vivaro van, with the Luton-built commercial shown in both panel van and doublecab body styles. “As the UK’s largest CV manufacturer celebrating its 90th year of van production, we’re proud to present a new Vivaro model that not only has class-leading credentials, but also secures the future of our Luton workforce for many years to come,” said Stephen Norman, Vauxhall’s Group Managing Director. Vauxhall’s all-new Vivaro, which is based on Groupe PSA’s EMP2 platform, will help secure 1,250 jobs at its manufacturing plant in Luton. Vauxhall is the UK’s largest commercial vehicle manufacturer, with over one million Vivaro-type vans built since production started in 2001. Investment in the new vehicle will help increase the plant’s production capacity to 100,000 units per year. With the new Vivaro, Vauxhall continues to implement its PACE! strategic plan by investing in growing market segments with high volumes. Vauxhall will offer a purely electric version of the new Vivaro next year, another milestone on the journey to electrifying the brand. Also on the stand was the 2019 Company Car & Van Small Van of the Year, the Vauxhall Combo Cargo. Vauxhall also displayed a Movano L1H2 panel van mounted with a Hawk VZ135 reverse articulated telescopic device. This ‘cherry picker’ vehicle enables a maximum working height of 13.7m. Vauxhall Vivaro Vauxhall’s all-new Vivaro is a true classleader. Equipped with the 100PS 1.5-litre engine, the standard wheelbase Vivaro has, provisionally, 22 per cent-lower emissions and returns 16 per cent-higher miles per gallon than the market leader. Switched-on Relay continues electric charge The CV Show 2019 was the chosen venue for the world premiere of New Relay Electric, a zero-emission addition to Citroën’s large panel van. New Berlingo Van also made its CV Show debut, giving many visitors a chance to see the multi-award winning van for the first time. Groupe PSA has made a commitment to introduce plug-in hybrid or electric versions of all new models starting in 2019, with electrified variants of each model available by 2025. The launch of New Relay Electric at the CV Show 2019 is true to that promise, with the electrification of the largest vehicle in the range. The Citroën Relay Electric on display was an L1 H1 panel van, produced at the Sevel factory in Val di Sangro, Italy and converted by partner BD Auto. Citroen has the products that are always open to business Ed Hickin, Head of Business Sales, Citroën UK, talks about the importance of the SME market to Citroen, its conversion programme and Brexit to Andrew Walker
makers. From what customers have told us so far, they’re blown away by the levels of comfort, its good looks and some attractive contract hire pricing.
Andrew Walker: There’s lots to get excited about at Citroen in your Centenary year. A new large SUV, the C5 Aircross kicked things off in January. How has the SME fleet customer received the new model?
EH: Dispatch made a strong start to 2019, with sales up 28.5% in Q1 compared with Q1 2018. The introduction of the Euro 6.2 Dispatch engines coincides with a revised range to match the New Berlingo Van model designations, ie, X, Enterprise, Worker and Driver. We expect the new trim levels will be very attractive to Dispatch buyers.
Ed Hickin: Yes, indeed, there’s lots to get excited about, not least the launch of New C5 Aircross SUV. From our perspective, it’s a sector that we haven’t been in before and we know we are a late entry, which for us also means that a lot of sales are going to be conquest business. The C5 Aircross is very much a core product for the SME sector. It’s still relatively early days, of course, with production still ramping up, but so far our customer orders are very much heading in the right direction, with April order take up over 60 per cent compared with March. Our Business Centres will be running test drive events this month to introduce New C5 Aircross SUV to even more new SME decision 24 | June 2019 | Company Car & Van
AW: You’ve also just announced a new Euro 6.2 diesel engine for the Dispatch. How do you think this will help sales of this model going forward?
AW: The Citroen Ready to Run is your conversions programme for LCV customers, enabling an easy one-stop-shop for conversions, for example. Has the programme encouraged more SMEs to consider the Citroen CV range? EH: Ready to Run continues to be a successful programme for us, particularly where SME customers are concerned. These customers often need a rapid response because their dealer visit could well have been prompted by a vehicle failure or new contract won, meaning they are looking for a quick
replacement. Because our business centres stock and display models in the Ready to Run range it is often a big help to our SME customers that they can see and touch the product, and make a decision on the spot. AW: The Berlingo was our Small Van of the Year for 2019 and we know that sales in this sector are still buoyant. However, that might not be the case in the future, as we all know that there are challenges facing the auto sector, particularly Brexit. Has Citroen noticed any negative impacts from this, and how has the brand been planning around it? EH: Groupe PSA has implemented contingency planning for a ‘No deal’ Brexit. We are keeping our customers informed, either via our dealer networks or directly, regarding any potential impact on pricing. Where existing orders are concerned, our dealers will be totally transparent about any pricing implications that may result from a ‘No deal’ scenario. We are in contact with leasing company customers to ensure that they can carry out their business with us and their own customers with as much clarity and as little disruption as possible. The Mitsubishi Shogun Sport is already established as an extremely rugged and capable all-terrain vehicle, but the new SVP Concept bolsters these impressive off-road credentials with black, 18-inch, Predator alloy wheels with a red split-rim design, BF Goodrich all-terrain tyres and special wheel arch extensions to accommodate the 40mm wider track. FUSO Canter fits the bill as ULEZ costs start to mount Construction and engineering contractor J Murphy & Sons has responded to the introduction of London’s Ultra Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ) by investing in a fleet of FUSO Canter tippers with hybrid diesel-electric drivelines. The 20 new vehicles are exempt from the £100 per day charge now being levied on all trucks that venture inside the capital’s busy central area, which do not meet the Euro VI emissions standard. Murphy believes that as well as being significantly cleaner, the new vehicles will deliver running cost savings, while also providing exemplary levels of productivity, reliability and safety. The Eco Hybrids were supplied by Mercedes-Benz Dealer Bell Truck and Van – like other members of the manufacturer’s franchised network in Britain, it also sells and supports the popular FUSO Canter light truck range.

From stationary it uses electric power only, then switches to a combination of diesel and electric operation once a speed of around six mph has been reached. Depending on the power demand, the electric motor also supports the diesel at higher speeds. Mode switching is seamless, requiring no input from the driver. An Idle StartStop system is fitted as standard and contributes to fuel savings of up to 23% compared to its standard, diesel-engined stablemate.

Canter lands two titles at Trade Van Driver Awards A ‘solid and proven’ fully electric model and a ‘feisty’ off-road variant ensured another show-stopping role for the FUSO Canter at Trade Van Driver’s latest awards. Mirroring their successes in last year’s competition, the FUSO eCanter was again named Best Alternative Fuel Truck by the small business user magazine, while the high-riding, AWD version took the Best Heavy Duty 4x4 honours for the sixth year running. Presented by Trade Van Driver Editor Matthew Eisenegger at the CV Show 2019, the awards were accepted on behalf of the manufacturer by Joe Castronovo FUSO Product Manager at Mercedes-Benz Trucks UK. The FUSO Canter light truck family is sold and supported by Mercedes-Benz dealers in Great Britain. The awards are judged by an expert panel of journalists and readers who use LCVs. Whisper-quiet, and producing zero tail-pipe emissions, the 7.5-tonne FUSO eCanter is powered by six high-voltage, water-cooled lithium-ion batteries. It has been widely acknowledged as the first
economically viable, fully electric truck – with a body and payload allowance of up to 4.5 tonnes, and a single charge allowing effective operating ranges of more than 62 miles (100 km), the eCanter also offers valuable operating cost savings compared to a conventional, diesel-engined truck. As Trade Van Driver’s judges observed: “While many of the major manufacturers are dipping their toes into the alternative fuel pond, FUSO is way ahead of the game with its eCanter. When will it be available to buy from your dealer network? Gareth Matthews: The Proace City will go on sale in the UK market in quarter one 2020. It will be available across our UK retailer network. CC&V: We made the Hilux our Pick Up of the Year for 2019. How are Hilux sales progressing, including your Hilux-based conversions, and are there any new versions in the pipeline? GM: Hilux sales are progressing well as this model represents the foundation of our commercial vehicle line-up. Indeed, we have fleet customers who will only ever buy Hilux as this model has such a strong reputation in the

marketplace. With regard to conversions, we are always working with suppliers and looking at what other popular conversions would meet the needs of our customers. CC&V: Sister brands Toyota Cars and Lexus are all about hybrids. Will Toyota be introducing any hybrid or EV commercial vehicles to its CV range anytime soon ? GM: We are always reviewing our vehicle range and do believe in offering the right car at the right time. At present our self-charging hybrids meet this need for consumers today in terms of cars. We do not have any news we can share regarding our commercial vehicle range at this stage and our current focus is the launch of the new Proace City.

How is the Proace performing in its sector and is it attracting customers from our readership, the SME sector? GM: Proace sales have been growing steadily across Europe and the UK, and enables us to compete in the markets where we know we are strong, which are SMEs and individual owner/operators. Our sales targets are realistic and we do not need to chase unprofitable business. The addition of the new Proace City will increase our CV offering to business and potentially open new doors to customers who need to run this type of vehicle. This growth is also supported by a national retailer network renown for its customer service.

Proace City offers best-in-class load length and weight The all-new Proace City joins the established Proace medium duty van, and the legendary Hilux pick-up in building Toyota’s LCV market presence. The new van provides a perfect fit with the Proace range in terms of size and payloads and will meet a wide range of business needs, with different loading and seating configurations and powertrain options. The compact van is presented in two different lengths – short at 4.4m and long at 4.7m. The UK specification is still to be determined as to seat configurations. The dimensions and packaging give Proace City excellent load capacity, with maximum

volume from 3.3m3 (short model) to 4.3m3 (long version with Smart Cargo option). Notably the Toyota is one of few vehicles in its class that can accommodate two Euro palettes. Adding the Smart Cargo system option gives best-in-class load length capability of 3.1m for the short version and 3.4m for the long, while the maximum payload is another class-best figure at one tonne (both versions). For those who need
to carry even greater or heavier loads, the van can tow braked trailers up to 1.5 tonnes. Asymmetrical rear doors (glazed or unglazed) or a top-hinged tailgate can be specified. Proace City will be available with a range of petrol and diesel powertrains offering a power spread from 75 to 130 DIN hp, and a choice of five or six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmissions. Practical and versatile design Proace City can be specified with interior configurations to cater for different passenger and load-carrying requirements. The van is available with either two individual front seats or a three-seat bench, the latter additionally offering a Smart Cargo option, as seen on the larger Proace model. The Smart Cargo system uses a folding outer passenger seat and a hatch in the bulkhead to provide an extra 0.4 m3 of load space and to increase maximum load length by 1.3m; the centre passenger seatback can be rotated to create a handy desk space, with additional under-seat storage. In the crew cab version, when the second row seats are not being used, the bench can be folded flat and the bulkhead moved forwards to increase load space. A hatch in the bulkhead can be opened to carry longer loads. The Proace City van can be fitted with a rear hatch in the roof as another useful option when longer items need to be carried. This comes with a cross-bar that can support up to 100kg. Clever and capacious storage points are featured throughout the cabin (according to model), ranging from coin and cup holders and open stowage areas, to an underseat drawer and spaces designed into the roof, doors and floor. In the passenger version, a panoramic roof option can specified with aircraft-style overhead storage in a locker and a central ‘floating’ arch structure that have a combined 74-litre capacity, accessible from the second row seats and the boot. passenger accommodation, with the option of three individual seats or a 60:40 split-folding bench in the second row. A third row can be added to both the long and short body versions, with seats large enough and with slide-adjustment to accommodate adults in comfort. All passenger seats fold flat, including the front seat, to maximise load capacity and convenience. Safety, comfort and convenience with superior equipment features The Proace City benefits from equipment specifications that include a series of features, delivering enhanced safety, a comfortable driving environment and improved performance and practicality, both in van and Verso passenger vehicle versions. The safety features provide high levels of active safety, meeting customer requirements in three different packs. an extended Road Sign Assist system, while the most comprehensive package further adds Adaptive Cruise Control and a Blind Spot Monitor. All models also come with eCall for automatic connection with the emergency services in the event of a serious accident. Where multimedia and connectivity are concerned, Proace City is equipped with an eight-inch touchscreen to access audio and smartphone functions, with MirrorLink, Apple CarPlay (including Siri assistant) and Android Auto (including Google assistant), plus Bluetooth, and USB/Aux-in connections. It can be used with navigation and online functions, including 3D mapping, voice command recognition and connected traffic information (via Tomtom Traffic). Proace City also offers a head-up display, presenting key driving information, such as navigation, speed limits and safety functions comfortably and clearly in the driver’s forward sightline. Safety and ease of manoeuvring are supported by a rear-view camera that provides both a 180-degree and overhead dynamic images of the area behind the vehicle, and a static view covering an even wider (180 degree-plus) area. A Blind Spot Monitor warns the driver of other road users moving in their blind spot with an alert in the display audio screen. Proace City’s performance can be adapted to tackle different driving conditions with Toyota Traction Select. Using a rotary controller, the driver can choose between Normal, Snow, Sand and All-terrain modes. Can it really be eight years since Range Rover launched the Evoque? Back in 2011, spending billions of pounds on an all-new small Range Rover was a massive gamble by Land Rover, but oh, how it paid off, with over 800,000 sold in 116 countries. But with success comes copy cats, with a plethora of Evoque wannabes including the Audi Q3, Jaguar E-Pace, BMW X2 and Volvo XC40 all attempting to replicate its success. None has quite succeeded, though, but they have the sector forward, which is why Land Rover has invested an awful lot of time and money in building a new model, adding fresh styling, better on-board tech, higher quality finishes and, most importantly a range of more fuel efficient mild-hybrid engines to its baby, with the added flexibility down the line for the new platform to take an Evoque EV. While the Premier League of motoring publications took a trip to Greece to try out the new Evoque, the more humble among us, including the Northern Group of Motoring Writers, which Company Car and Van belongs to, had a far more interesting experience, visiting the Halewood plant on Merseyside, where, along with the Land Rover Discovery, the Evoque is built, followed by a drive through North Wales and a spin of off-road driving at the Land Rover Experience in Peckforton. Residing as I do in north Cheshire, I like to think that I am in the heartland of Range Rover country and it would be no surprise to readers that my immediate neighbour runs an Evoque. He told me that he had viewed the new model when his current car was in for service and that it looked exactly the same as the one he has. After the Evoque launch I was able to put him right on a few things, including letting him know that pretty much everything, save for the door hinges, is actually brand new! 44 | June 2019 | Company Car & Van
Our trip around Halewood was enlightening to say the least as we followed the shell of the car along the production line, watching the car being built before our eyes, before emerging fully formed at the end of the three-mile line. Amazingly, an Evoque or Land Rover Discovery Sport drives off the Halewood assembly line every 92 seconds and I can vouch for the care taken by all of the associates involved in building the cars. Nothing is taken to chance and with over 2.5 million variations of Evoque on offer, featuring different specs, right and left hand cabins, colours and wheels, the system works like clockwork. Halewood employs 4,000 ‘associates’ who ensure that the 700+ cars a day meet the quality levels that all Range Rover and Land Rover customers expect. The latest Range Rover Evoque is based on Land Rover’s Premium Transverse Architecture (PTA), a heavily modified version of the outgoing car’s D8 platform. The new car takes up much the same space on the road: it’s just 21mm longer, which increases rear passenger space. The new platform also brings with it up-to-date 48-volt mild-hybrid electrification for all but the entry-level 2WD model. This system has been designed to improve emissions while readying the Evoque for a plug-in hybrid version as well as more sophisticated in-car tech. Land Rover expects that most customers will choose a diesel engine despite the current trend towards petrol units, so there are three diesel power plants and three petrols to cover all bases. The diesels available are the D150 2.0 litre with 147bhp, with either a 2WD manual or 4WD automatic gear box. Next up is a 178bhp D180 and finally there’s a 237bhp D240 with an extra turbocharger. The three petrol engines offers are the
P200, with a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine and 197bhp. Next up is the P250 with 246bhp and finally the P300, with a whopping 299bhp. All petrols are available as auto only. Diesel emissions range from 143g/km for the manual D150, to 169g/km for the automatic D240, while the petrols come with 176g/km for the auto P200 up to 186g/km for the auto P300. The diesel’s average WLTP fuel economy is, at worst, 37.9mpg and at best 41.3 mpg, with the petrols coming in at a worst of 28.7 mpg and a best of 30.7mpg, a clear victory for the diesel option and something fleet customers should take note of. The model spec’s are denoted as currently with the choice of S, SE, HSE and R-Dynamic. Sidle up to the new Evoque and it’s easier to pick up on the differences over the original. Slimmer LED headlights, recessed door handles, a more bulbous rear end and sweeping direction indicators, all take their cue from the larger Velar, with R-Dynamic models adding black and burnished copper detailing plus a body-coloured front bumper. Alloy wheels range from standard 17”- 20” or 21” as an option, with colours ranging from the popular blacks and greys to the brighter Firenze Red Climb aboard and the interior smacks of quality. Unsurprisingly, there’s lots of scope for personalisation. ‘Kvadrat’ textile upholstery is standard, available in two shades and complemented by faux-suede Dinamica elements, while quilted leather in four colour ways is a £1,650 upgrade. And it doesn’t stop with the seats” you can choose from numerous headlining options, wood or aluminium trim, configurable ambient lighting and illuminated tread plates. rear parking assistance and a rear view camera. S trim adds SatNav, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. SE and HSE models get Land Rover’s dual screen infotainment system Touch Pro Duo, plus digital dials behind the steering wheel. Touch Pro Duo splits the car’s infotainment functions across two screens on the centre console. The top one allows access to SatNav, DAB radio, Media, phone and park assist, with heating and ventilation moved to the lower screen with the option of using three rotary dials to select the temperature. For those who want every conceivable extra fitted to their Evoque you can have ClearSight Rear View, which uses a roof-mounted camera to display a widescreen view of the road behind. It’s been developed, Land Rover says, because of complaints over the Mk1’s rear view being compromised. And new Evoque is also the first car in the world to feature ground view technology, which effectively makes the bonnet invisible by projecting camera imagery onto the upper touchscreen to show the driver a 180-degree view under the front of the vehicle. We were testing the SE R-Dynamic 9-speed automatic diesel, which costs from £46,300 OTR. It comes very well equipped, including features that will take your Evoque off-road; Terrain Response, All Terrain Progress Control (ATPC), Low Traction Launch, Hill Descent Control (HDC), Torque Vectoring by Braking, Passive suspension and Hill Launch Assist. Add-ons fitted to our test car included 16-way heated and cooled, massage electric memory front seats with heated rear seats and a fixed panoramic roof, which along with larger alloys, special paint and the ClearSight mirror, took the cost all the way up to £54,700. customers will look at the monthly cost of around £400 per month when getting into the Evoque and won’t be buying one outright. The cabin is a joy to be in and is much improved over its predecessor. There’s some useful storage on offer, with four storage bins, a cubby under the centre armrest, a rubberised tray on the centre console with two cup holders revealed underneath, decent door pockets and a glove box. The Evoque’s extra 21mm is most noticeable in the rear where there is more leg room than in the Mk1. Headroom is still a little compromised by the sloping roof and in our case the panoramic glass roof. The Evoque’s boot is 10 per cent larger than the outgoing car, with 591 litres on offer with the seats up, which increases to 1,383 litres with the rear 40:20:40 seats folded, using a handle in the boot. For those who tow, all Evoque models can pull an unbraked trailer of up to 750kg and if you choose an automatic gearbox-diesel engine combination, there’s up to 2000kg of braked trailer towing ability. The entry level diesel with 2WD drive and a manual gearbox is limited to 1,600kg braked trailers. After our drive to Halewood taking in the M56 and the new Runcorn Bridge Mersey crossing, we set off for North Wales and the Horseshoe Pass. The Evoque offers excellent levels of comfort and is a satisfying car to be in, whether driving or as a front passenger. The on-board tech works well. I connected my iPhone to Apple CarPlay and while the JLR SatNav was okay, I still favour Google Maps accessed this way. There’s enough power on offer to overtake slower moving traffic, which we did several times on route, and on the A55 and M53 the Evoque sits happily at motorway speeds utilising cruise control. The cabin is very quiet
with little wind or road noise noticeable. On the winding roads around Llangollen the small Evoque handled exceptionally well and after a couple of hours behind the wheel I really couldn’t fault it. Reaching our destination, which was the Land Rover Experience off-road centre at Peckforton, we had the opportunity to take the baby Range Rover on a series of challenging tasks, all of which it comfortably coped with, to great aplomb. Most customers won’t ever put their Evoque through such a tough environment, but it’s good to know that if you buy one, the option is there for you to attend one of these UK wide specialist Land Rover off-road centres, to see just what your Range Rover or Land Rover really is capable of. For SME fleet customers reading this, Company Car and Van would put the new Evoque back at the top of the class for SUVs in its sector. While the old model was clearly lagging behind the new Audi Q3 and BMW X2, this new version matches both for build quality and good looks but is clearly ahead on the options customers can choose, the available tech, it’s desirability and, of course, it’s ‘go-anywhere’ capability.
Verdict The sector game-changer is back on top of the pile. Beautiful to look at and to drive and ahead of its rivals for tech. It handles off-road with aplomb – even if you’ll never get yours dirty! CC&V RATING: N N N N N

Vintage Volvo offers best of both worlds The V60 offers all those idiosyncratic touches that make Volvos stand out from the crowd – but adds quality and finesse that challenges the best of Germany, says Andrew Walker
Volvo has had a splendid 12-18 months. Despite ‘diesel-gate’, its current range for fleet – mostly diesels – have been a resounding sales success, led by the XC40, and Volvo could easily have sat back and taken a breather. However, it didn’t rest on its laurels, adding a new V60 estate to the range for good measure. Company Car & Van had nothing but good

things to say about the larger Volvo V90, so could the V60, which looks like a smaller version of the V90, be as impressive? With a V60 D4 Inscription delivered to our offices, we were eager to find out. The V60 is the modern successor to the V70, 850 and 760, cars that were practical but could never be described as eye-catching. The V60 is definitely more striking than these,
coming as it does with a wide, chrome Volvo front grille, Thor Hammer headlights, a deep front pyramid air intake and a slanting front windscreen. The rear end is flatter than the one fitted to the V90, although the rear boomerang light clusters are still in evidence. The interior of the V60 mirrors those found in the current Volvo line-up, with the centre console dominated by the Volvo 9” vertical touch screen. All V60 models feature the Volvo Sensus Connect set-up. Via the multi-function steering wheel you can select cruise control with the buttons on the left, with the hands-free phone, audio and car data accessed with those on the right. In front of the driver sits the 12.3” active TFT driver’s information display which contains the rev counter and speedometer and, for our week in the car, the SatNav road map. The quality inside is excellent, right up there with the class-leading German marques. It doesn’t matter which model you choose, Momentum, R-Design, Inscription or the Pro versions of these, all are beautifully built. Continued on page 48

Vintage Volvo offers best of both worlds Continued from page 47 Our Inscription featured cosseting sand leather seats and over a 300-mile mostly motorway round-trip, with four adults on board, the V60 was incredibly comfortable, with even my notoriously bad neck pain, often triggered by a long car journey, staying away. Front seat passengers have plenty of room and in the rear, two six-footers will sit comfortably behind similarly proportioned front seat occupants. Cabin storage is generous. There’s decent door pockets, with room for two drinks holders in the centre binnacle, which also contains the hand brake, starter button and gear lever. Lift up the tailgate and the V60 offers up 539 litres of space. The floor space is both wide and flat and our test car featured Volvo’s clever lift-up divider preventing your shopping sliding around the boot floor. The rear seats fold down by pressing two buttons located on the boot side. They lie almost flat to increase the space to 1,441 litres, very useful for a trip to IKEA or the local recycling centre. I gave it a thorough test on a journey up to the north east. I chose to make the trip in Eco mode and averaged just over 49mpg, pretty good for a large car with four adults on board. Other driving options offered are the self explanatory Comfort, Individual and Dynamic, modes, but to be honest, I found Eco perfect

for my needs and used it for the remainder of my week. Claimed combined economy for our 190hp 2.0 litre diesel, is 61.4mpg, with CO2 emissions of 122g/km. On our long journey the V60 averaged almost 50mpg, while driving shorter distances for the remainder of our week saw the economy drop significantly to 42 mpg. While this may seem like a poor return, it is comparable with the competition. In the main, while we have nothing but praise for the latest V60, the range does come with one caveat and that is the trim. While the safety features are brilliant and are very welcome, to get the full monty of gadgets and apps you need to spend more. The basic OTR
price of our test model D4 Inscription is £37,860 but you’ll want to add the Convenience Pack, which offers power folding rear seat backrests and headrests, a grocery bag holder and other goodies, but it will cost an extra £500, while Intellisafe Pro, which brings you a host of safety features, adds £1,625. Most disappointing of all, though, is that Smartphone integration for AppleCar Play or Android Auto will cost you a further £300. Volvo has always built excellent estates and the latest V60 is no different. Just like the larger V90, there is a dramatic improvement in the style and quality on offer CC&V Verdict: A stand-out in the sector. NNNNN

ProCeed succeeds – but 1.6’s engine of choice Andrew Walker tests KIA ProCeed 1.4 T-GDI GT Line S Kia’s rise in Europe has been both amazing and richly deserved, with a range of cars that appeal across a wide cross-section of the motoring public. Company Car & Van’s long been a fan, and the latest Kia to hit the car park at HQ was the ProCeed, a shooting brake for the common man. As far as Kias go it’s a bit pricey, at £28,690 for the 1.4 T-GDi GT Line S model, but the immense amount of kit and the well-crafted good looks make it feel better than its rivals. And there’s Kia’s seven-year warranty that still puts others to shame. What’s not to like? It looks great. There are 18” alloys, a high gloss black and satin radiator grille, high gloss black wing mirrors, a body coloured high gloss black rear spoiler, privacy glass, LED headlights and an air intake with black surround. Where the Ceed SW is a little bland to look at, the ProCeed is the complete opposite and drew positive comments wherever I went. Inside there’s part-leather/Alcantara-effect seats and matching leather-coloured dash top, with both the front seats and even the outer two rear seats heated. The leather-bound steering wheel is heated too and the driver’s seat is 10 way power adjustable, with memory to boot.

While the sloping roof gives the car sex appeal, the design means that taller passengers will struggle for headroom in the rear. On the plus side, there’s flat boot floor in the ProCeed, there’s no load lip, plus the floor lifts up to reveal three more under floor storage spaces and two smaller ones behind the wheel arches. Boot capacity is 395 litres with the seats up and 1,291 litres with the rear seats folded. Despite the sporty looks, the GT-Line S with it’s 138bhp 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol is bit of a sheep in wolf’s clothing. Yes, there is a Sport drive function, but that’s still only 9.1-seconds for 0-60mph and the dual-clutch gearbox, although excellent in town, is a little lethargic. Sporty looks do not translate into a sporty drive. Go for it and even on twisty roads, the 1.4-litre lacks finesse. The chassis holds firm
and it’s an enjoyable drive, but not thrilling. And that middle-of-the-road feeling carries onto the motorway too, where it will happily eat up the miles, but won’t give you the mid-range pull that many are used to in a mid-range diesel. Just like the Ceed SW that we drove recently, which also came with the 1.4 petrol engine, for corporate customers, this ProCeed’s combined mpg of 42.8 – we averaged 35.6mpg – and CO2 emissions of 133g/km do not make happy reading. The 1.6 diesel ProCeed will hit over 50mpg and offers lower CO2 of 110g/km. Overall, we loved the ProCeed for the way it looks and equipment levels but the 1.4 petrol engine isn’t our engine of choice unless you’re driving only in town. A better option for business users is the cheaper 1.6 CRDi ProCeed.

e-Golf offers the last hurrah before all-electric take over by Andrew Walker In years to come we may look back on the current crop of electric cars with a fondness more associated with their petrol brethren. Volkswagen is a case in point. I’ve just had the pleasure of driving the Volkswagen e-Golf which is to all intents and purposes an ordinary Golf – but with a twist: it is actually the last Volkswagen of its kind as it features an electric powertrain fitted to the same chassis as a petrol or diesel Golf. By next year Volkswagen will launch the I.D., a Golf-sized car with an interior the size of a Passat, and it will be first Volkswagen built from the ground up as an electric car. Indeed, you can trace the I.D.’s origins back to 1972 when Volkswagen built an electric van, with the first Elektro Golf manufactured in 1976. Who said electric cars were new? In the mainstream EV car world, the Volkswagen e-Golf is, to my mind, the best of the bunch, at least as far as being so ordinarily Golf-like that your brain will tell you are driving a petrol Golf, not an EV. The interior is so Volkswagen as to be comforting – the Walker 52 | June 2019 | Company Car & Van
family run two cars, a Polo and a T-Roc – and the usual dashboard, steering wheel, seat fabrics, soft touch plastics and excellent infotainment system are familiar to any Volkswagen driver. Yes, the interior is a bit bland, but that is the Volkswagen way. What you get, though, is demonstrably nicer than what’s inside a Nissan Leaf or Hyundai Kona, for example. Push the start button and the electric motor comes on. Total power on tap is 136 PS with 290 Nm’s of torque. The battery actually weighs 318kg, which is more than most families of four, so immediately it feels slightly different to handle than a petrol or diesel Golf. In fact, it glides along so peacefully it’s an easy car to like, with a 0-62mph time of 9.6 seconds and a top speed of 93 mph – although I strongly suggest you drive the e-Golf no faster than 70mph, for range reasons. It’s not too dissimilar in its handling to a ‘traditional’ Golf, but the battery weight and location do make the car heavier in a sharp turn while simultaneously making it feel faster in a straight line. Volkswagen claims a realistic range for the
e-Golf of 124 miles and after a week driving it, mostly local but with a couple of 60-mile round trips, that seems about right; in a week 140 miles an achievable target. With a Rolec EV charger at my disposal I let the car run down to as low as 20 miles of charge in the batteries and by plugging it in to the Rolec, I was able to fully charge the battery to 154 miles in 4 hours. To give you an example of the battery range, the e-Golf was delivered to us in Altrincham from Milton Keynes, a distance of about 150 miles. My delivery driver collected the e-Golf with a full charge, stopped at Keele Services for 45 minutes to part-charge the car and then continued onto Altrincham, a distance of 35 miles. The car arrived with me with an electric range showing of 38 miles. A week in the e-Golf turned up some battery range anomalies, most of which are now to be expected as they come with the EV territory. First off, the test period coincided with a couple of frosty mornings. On the first, I turned on the ignition to see the range down to 38 miles, quite a shock when I’d charged it to full the night before. come home, the range had gone back up to 151 miles. On the second morning, I de-frosted the car using the heater, rather than a scraper, and the charge fell dramatically, from 132 miles when I switched on the ignition to just 58 in just a few minutes. Ouch! Range anxiety is most customers de facto objection to owning an EV and Volkswagen has included some range-saving technology on the e-Golf that helps curb this. It will automatically re-charge it’s batteries when the driver presses the brake pedal. To enhance this function, you can move the gear selector backwards from ‘D’ to ‘B’ and the car will use a very high recuperating force. To increase the range of the battery you can come out of the ‘Normal’ driving mode into ‘Eco’ or ‘Eco+,’ by pressing the Mode button next to the gear selector. Choose ‘Eco’ and the car’s maximum speed is reduced to 71mph and the climate control goes onto Eco mode. This was perfect for the motorway. Select ‘Eco+’ and things change again. The climate and heating is switched off and top speed goes down to 56mph. But be warned. I accidentally chose this function on the motorway in normal traffic and took a few seconds to realise why I couldn’t go any faster than 56mph. Suffice to say that this function works best in motorway road works and slow moving urban areas, not in the middle lane of fast-moving motorway! For those of you who are into technology, the e-Golf features Volkswagen’s Car-Net app, which allows you to, for example, activate the car’s heating from indoors on a cold morning. It also gives you a constant stream of vehicle

Verdict The industry is changing and the e-Golf will be the last Volkswagen built this way. The new all-electric VW I.D. range is coming but, in the short term, the e-Golf is well worth a look. CC&V RATING: N N N N
information direct to your desktop or smartphone, via the security of the Cloud and it also allows you to send configuration instructions back to the car. The best place and time to do this is when the car is plugged into a charger, so none of the precious battery range is lost. As far as equipment goes the e-Golf has all of the modern conveniences and safety features a normal car has. ABS, ESC, airbags galore, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), driver crash alert, PreCrash prevention are all fitted. In addition you’ll find electric windows, multi-function steering wheel, 9.2” touchscreen infotainment with Discover Navigation Pro as well as the aforementioned Car-Net on which you can connect your smartphone via AppleCar Play or Android Auto, as well as Bluetooth and DAB. With a total RRP of £32,075, the e-Golf is not cheap. But for company car drivers BIK is just 13 per cent and driving 20 miles a day in the e-Golf would save you as much as £1,630 per year compared to 20 miles a day driven in a
petrol car. Food for thought. For reassurance, the battery comes with an eight year or 99,360 mile warranty. There are two charging cables included: a 32 amp AC for a home or external charger and a 10 amp mains cable for a domestic socket. Both are safely stored away under the boot floor in convenient sized bags. With the domestic cable taking 17 hours to fully charge the battery, a home and/or work charger makes the most sense. My 6.6kW home charger meant a fully charged e-Golf in just five hours and Volkswagen has teamed up with POD Point to offer customers a home charging wall box costing £279 installed for the 3.6kW version, including the OLEV grant. Until the I.D arrives, Volkswagen customers will still have the e-Golf. Just like the Nissan Leaf, the e-Golf will work for some as their car of choice, but not for all. Even the arrival of the Hyundai Kona EV, with a realistic range of 250 miles, is still some way shy of the 500-mile range many of us expect our cars to have. In reality, the e-Golf is perfect for those who don’t drive long distances and can utilise a home or work charger. I genuinely believe that if you can charge every day at home on at least a 3.kW charger, a regular 100-mile round trip is possible before range anxiety sets in. From my perspective I really liked the e-Golf and as I stated at the start of this review, one day it could become a collectable classic. If you want the future, you’ll have to wait for the I.D. If you want the future now, then the e-Golf will give you one of the last tastes of an ordinary car, designed for a fossil-fuel engine, but doubling up as an electric-eco-warrior.

‘Pure design’ concept helps Mazda 3 land Red Dot title The all-new Mazda3 has captured its first major international motoring award after being named Best of the Best at the 2019 Red Dot product design awards. The competition’s highest accolade is awarded to products whose designs are considered genuinely ground-breaking and visionary. The new-generation compact joins the growing list of award-winning Mazda models designed according to the Kodo: Soul of Motion philosophy. Hyundai has an exciting programme of new cars and new technology lined up, says Fleet Director Michael Stewart (right) – and it’s all backed by a nationwide dealer network that’s ready to work with SMEs. Andrew Walker asks the questions.
Hyundai has power to add to the sme fleet sector Andrew Walker: Your new Fleet Centre Programme looks exciting. Will it be targeting SMEs through your Fleet Centres, or will all of the Hyundai dealer network be able to supply cars to small and medium enterprises? Michael Stewart: All of our dealers nationwide will be able to supply vehicles to all of our fleet customers, and they’ll be encouraged to do so. Our National Fleet Centres – around 15 of them – will have a truly national capability and scale, with the ability to not only cater to our major contracts but also to small and medium sized businesses. AW: The IONIQ sold well into fleet last year. Available as a Plug-In, a Hybrid and an EV, is this the way forward for your models in the fleet sector, ie, a choice of drivetrains covering all of the bases? MS: We very much see battery electric vehicles as the future of fleets, and even further ahead, hydrogen fuel cell technology like that seen in NEXO. Right now, we’ve got the perfect ‘bridging’ technology, in the form of long-range electric vehicles, hybrids, plug-in hybrids and clean petrol and diesel technology. The needs and wants of our fleet customers are varied, so we will always ensure we have a range that speaks to all of those needs. AW: The Hyundai Kona EV has won many awards, including our EV of the Year. Do you see EVs playing an important role in fleet sales over the coming years? MS: Absolutely, yes. We’ve seen huge demand from all fleets, both big and small. The response to Kona Electric in the fleet segment alone was enough to outsell our UK allocation of Kona Electric, let alone demand from private customers. We only expect this demand to grow. AW: The public sector and national fleet are obvious markets for EVs, but do you think SMEs can be persuaded to consider electric cars? AW: With all the current talk about EVs, it’s interesting to see that Hyundai has launched the NEXO fuel cell vehicle. What are your hopes and aims with this new model in the fleet and business sector? MS: NEXO (pictured below) is a large mid-size SUV, with a 414-mile range and zero emissions. No other zero emissions vehicle offers the
same kind of versatility, and we know that as the hydrogen refuelling infrastructure grows, demand will grow, too. We’re not looking to sell a large number of NEXO models each year, but the fleet demand we have is already greater than our UK allocation. AW: When the uncertainty over Brexit goes away, where would you like to see Hyundai in the corporate sector in 2021? MS: With our new dealer structure in place, and all the supporting services behind it, our strategy over the next two years is to target smart and sustained growth in our true fleet share. We want to be having more conversations with more end users, working closely with our customers to ensure we’re delivering the best possible experience for them.

Hyundai’s touch of hybrid keeps Tucson in the game The alternative SUV sector has a new contender with the ‘mild hybrid’ Tucson Premium, says Andrew Walker After a couple of weeks spent driving the Hyundai Kona EV and the Hyundai i30 Fastback 1.4 petrol, it was refreshing to climb back into a diesel, not least because the fuel tank doesn’t run dry after 200 or 300 miles. Hyundai delivered its updated Tucson to Company Car and Van in mid-January, in the shape of the Premium 2.0CRDi 185PS 4WD 48v 8 speed automatic, which retails at £32,945. For the first time in a Hyundai this features a 48v ‘mild hybrid’ powertrain, similar to the one available on the Kia Sportage. It features a 0.44 kW/h 48-volt lithium-ion battery, a Mild Hybrid Starter Generator (MHSG), a LDC converter (Low Voltage DC/ DC) and an inverter. With this technology, Hyundai aims to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to seven per cent combined with the manual transmission in NEDC conversion. The 2.0 diesel engine is the most powerful in the Tucson line-up, offering an output of 137 kW/186 PS. It’s also 4WD and is paired with the newly developed 8-speed automatic transmission. The 48v mild hybrid technology will be available soon with the new Smart Stream 1.6-litre diesel engine in the Tucson. We always felt that the Tucson was one of the best looking crossovers out there and the changes made to the 2019 MY don’t alter this. They include full LED headlights and a ‘cascading grille’, while inside, tech upgrades bring in Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The 2.0 CRDI we tested offers 185PS and 400Nm torque and comes with an 8-speed torque converter auto. An alternative is the Smart Stream 1.6 diesel, available with either 115PS/280Nm or 136PS/320Nm. Both versions have 6-speed manual transmission, with front wheel drive. The more powerful version will also be offered with 4WD. While the 2.0 litre mild hybrid drives well, with a 0-62mph time of 9.5 seconds, there’s a caveat: the presence of 4WD coupled to the auto box means highish CO2 emissions, of 151g/km, and means your first year of VED will hurt. Having said that, the combined claimed fuel economy is actually a decent 49.6mpg on the combined cycle, which for a car in this sector is pretty good. It’s actually difficult to tell when you’re driving this Tucson what the 48v battery does. 58 | June 2019 | Company Car & Van
In reality, it works when you slow down or get going again, cutting the engine slightly early as you come to a halt, while offering electric power when you accelerate again, although it’s all done so smoothly it’s hard to notice it. The Tucson Premium comes very well equipped, with 18” alloys, silver roof rails, a chrome effect grille, silver front and rear skid plates, Blind Spot Detection System (BSD), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), an 8” touchscreen, wireless smartphone charging and KRELL premium audio. Customers buy SUVs for their space and inside, the storage is generous, with a glove box, decent door pockets, twin drinks holders an armrest with underneath storage, a USB, Aux-in and 12V connection. Rear passengers benefit from a pull-out centre armrest with two drinks holders, twin air vents and a USB connection. The battery in the hybrid version and the 4WD do lose you some boot space. The standard 2WD Tucson comes with 513 litres of storage but the hybrid 4WD drops this to 459 litres, though this will still be enough for many. Out and about, the Tucson handles like most uprights SUVs, tackling corners and winding roads adequately. Ultimately, in 4WD guise, this is a heavy car, weighing in at 1634kg and this means that it’s always going to drive best in either a straight line or on the motorway, where it’s an excellent performer. Set the cruise control and off you go. On our pot-holed UK roads the large ground clearance coupled with the decent suspension allow the Tucson to tackle poor roads with ease. Front seats are multi-adjustable and
comfortable, while in the rear, there’s excellent head and legroom. January offered up some typically inclement weather, with snow and ice, but the Tucson handled some very icy side roads with aplomb. Indeed, the Tucson felt capable in all situations we encountered, including torrential rain. We spent most of our week with the Tucson on the motorway and our combined fuel economy was a respectable 38.4mpg. Bearing in mind that our test car featured both 4WD and a battery, this figure is actually pretty impressive, with the Tucson outperforming the 2WD versions of the Mazda CX- 5, Toyota Rav4 and KIA Sportage we drove last year, by around four mpg. While the updated Tucson doesn’t look that different to its predecessor, the addition of the hybrid version, especially when it arrives on the 1.6 diesel version, makes an interesting alternative in this sector. The build quality has also improved and it’s all put together in the typically excellent Korean way. Like all Hyundais, the Tucson comes with a comprehensive five-year warranty package.
Verdict
Another diesel that outperforms its petrol sibling: who said diesel was dead? Comfortable, versatile and a great family motorway cruiser CC&V RATING: N N N N

NEW CAR REVIEW: BMW 3 SERIES
Precision is hallmark of the new 3 Series The BMW 3 Series Saloon has had an unparalleled reputation both for its quality, and supreme handling in the premium mid-size segment for more than 40 years, and in the latest iteration, the seventh generation raises the bar even higher. Precision, clean lines and bold contours are the hallmarks of the new 3 Series Saloon, which has had its proportions radically revised. The new car is 85 millimetres longer than its predecessor (at 4,709mm), 16 millimetres wider (1,827mm) and just 1 mm taller (1,442 millimetres). Added to that, its wheelbase has been extended by 41 millimetres to 2,851mm, as has its track widths (front: by 43mm, and rear by 21mm). At the front, the large BMW kidney grille elements are framed by a single surround and split up by wide bars and link to the headlight units. The customary BMW twin headlights feature the familiar two-way split that is further emphasised by an eyecatching notch in the front apron that rises into the headlight contour. A pair of character lines rise to the rear of the car at door-handle level and a contour line near the side skirts guides the eye to the sculpted rear wheel arches. Another feature is the ‘Hofmeister kink’ – the familiar counter-swing at the trailing edge of the side window graphic. A BMW hallmark, this element of the window frame is now integrated into the C- pillar, giving the rear doors a “freestanding” glass edge. The interior is designed to accentuate the spaciousness of the cabin and the driverfocused cockpit. The instrument panel has a modern, light look with horizontal lines, high- quality electroplated trim strips and contours that extend into the doors. The newly-designed instrument cluster and Control Display form a large surfaced screen grouping, while the controls not included in these units are arranged into clearly structured function panels. The range of standard and optional interior trim elements available for the instrument panel and centre console is almost entirely new. As well as open-pore fine wood options, customers can choose from a variety of aluminium trims including a new Aluminium “mesh effect” interior trim.

The entry level SE model features substantially increased standard specification. It includes Adaptive LED headlights with cornering light and eyebrow indicators, BMW Welcome Light Carpet, Interior Ambient Lighting with up to 11 colour settings, Parking Assistant with reversing camera and latest generation reversing assistant, Electric folding mirrors, Three-zone air conditioning and enhanced Acoustic glazing. All 3 Series models benefit from 40:20:40 split folding rear seats and folding rear headrests as standard. The entry model features a leather Sport steering wheel and BMW Live Cockpit plus, with its 8.8-inch central instrument cluster. The SE models get line-specific front and rear bumper design, and they also come with exclusive 17-inch light-alloy wheels or optional 18-inch wheels, bespoke door sill strips and LED front foglights. Other options include the Sport and the M Sport. Power comes from upgraded fourcylinder engines from the BMW Group’s Efficient Dynamics family in the BMW 330i and the BMW 320d. The 3 Series Saloon will feature a new- generation six-speed manual gearbox and the eight-speed Steptronic transmission. As an alternative to rear-wheel drive, the BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system will also be available for the new BMW 320d at launch. Systematic upgrades have been made to the BMW TwinPower Turbo technology for the two-litre, four-cylinder diesel engines in the BMW 320d and BMW 320d xDrive models. It now includes multi-stage turbocharging, which brings increased efficiency across all engine speeds. The revised diesel has a maximum output of 190hp and a peak torque of 400Nm enabling the BMW 320d to accelerate from zero to 62 mph in 7.1 seconds (automatic: 6.8 seconds) while the BMW 320d xDrive can get from zero to 62mph in 6.9 seconds. On test: NISSAN NAVARA
Navara is tough to beat by Andrew Walker The popularity of the pick-up here in the UK is still increasing, as more people buy one for work but look for something that will double as a comfortable family vehicle – a competitor, if you will, to the urban SUV. I probably have more enquiries from people about any pick-up I’m testing than about any other style of vehicle, and the main question asked is ‘Can it be used as a family car?’ Of course, there is no concrete answer to this, as every driver’s demands are different. But to try and make up your mind for you, the Mercedes-Benz X-Class, in reality a posher Navara, plus a new top-of-the-range VW Amarok, are making this decision harder still, by producing new models which get close to the comfort of some SUVs. What about the Nissan Navara? The NP300 Navara uses the 2.3-litre diesel engine that powers the NV400 van and is offered with outputs of 160PS or 190PS. It’s available in five trim levels: Visia, Acenta, Acenta+, N-Connecta and Tekna. Prices start from £19,998 for the Visia, rising to £26,863 for the Tekna all before you add VAT. Many of the Navara’s advanced safety features are standard across the range. This

includes Forward Emergency Braking on all double cab models; driver, passenger, side, knee and curtain airbags; electronic Limited Slip Differential (eLSD); Hill Start Assist and Hill Descent Control (on 4WD models). Nissan also offer generous specification levels from the entry level upwards. The Visia gets manual air-conditioning in 4WD format, plus Bluetooth, cruise control with speed limiter, steering wheel audio controls, an AUX socket, a USB port and three 12v sockets. Acenta adds 16” alloys, Nissan’s Intelligent Key System and a five-inch high-definition TFT
flat screen on the dash. Acenta+ is plusher again with 18” alloys, automatic air con with dual zone climate, a rear reversing camera, side steps, electric folding heated door mirrors and rear privacy glass. Opt for the N-Connecta and you’ll be rewarded with Nissan Connect’s 2.0 7” touchscreen sat nav and entertainment system including DAB, a rear colour reversing camera and Bluetooth audio streaming. The flagship Tekna adds the brand’s Around View Monitor, which uses cameras to give the driver a bird’s eye view of the car, as well as rear parking sensors, leather seats with heated

front seats, roof rails and LED headlights. For those reading this who actually want to use your Navara as a pick-up, all payload capacities on the range remain above the critical 1.0t mark that releases the trucks from VAT liability. The highest payload of the Navara line-up is 1,203kg for the Visia king cab/ chassis-cab variant, the Visia king cab 2WD 1,136kg, the Visia/ Acenta double cabs 1,062kg and the Acenta+, N-Connecta and Tekna 1,047kg with manual and 1,052kg with automatic transmission. Towing capacity is 3.5t, a match for both the Ford Ranger and Isuzu D-Max. Inside, the Navara cabin is well thought out and also very comfortable. The dashboard is sensibly laid out, although the plastics are definitely built for hard wear and practicality and there’s no soft touch on any of the surfaces. Standard cabin equipment is definitely a match for an SUV, with two front cup holders, a four-way adjustable passenger and six-way adjustable driver’s seat. There’s also a front armrest, a leather handbrake, steering wheel and gear knob cover, front and rear headrests, privacy glass and even a sunglass holder. There’s acres of space all around up front and decent headroom in the rear, though the is about average for the class. On the motorway it is a comfortable cruiser, and a spell on winding North Yorkshire roads demonstrated an almost SUV-like experience, hugging the road on the tightest corners and

offering up a comfortable ride. Throw in some bumpy, pot-holes and the Navara copes admirably, but if you hit a series of undulating roads at speed, the cabin is little bouncy, in common with all other pick-ups. Off-road it didn’t disappoint. On some challenging terrain, travelling just 3.5 miles in 90 minutes across deeply rutted fields, two rivers, ascending and descending some incredibly tight, boulder-covered roads, showed us the Navara’s true off-road capabilities, which were excellent. A central dial lets you select 4LO mode to tackle the toughest conditions – we used this and it’s tremendous. The Navara is also surprisingly agile, enabling a turning circle of 12.4m. A drive on B roads through and around Wensleydale further enhanced my feeling that currently, the Navara is one the best all round pick-up’s out there. Back on the A1 and then on the M62, the Navara in cruise control sat happily at motorway speeds. Fuel economy is 40.3 mpg on the combined and CO2 emissions of 183g/km are also attractive to buyers.
On more local journeys the Navara proved itself an easy vehicle to live with. Obviously it’s larger than most cars so parking is more difficult, but the light power steering and reversing camera make this task relatively easy. For urban warriors, Nissan has added the Around View Monitor display, first in this category and an option on our test model, which helps you park better and great for those serious off-roaders who need to know where obstacles are when they’re in the toughest terrain. A tick in both boxes. At the end of our drive, the $64,000 question we all wanted an answer to was partly but not completely solved. Is the Navara a match for the urban SUV? For those of us lucky enough to drive a lot of vehicles in a year, the answer is unquestionably, no. It’s a pick-up. However, if you are looking for a practical family vehicle that will double as a work horse and go off-road over the toughest terrain, then the Navara is right up there. I can’t say fairer than that!
Verdict The latest Navara is more SUV-like than before, with a better all-round ride, especially in the rear. Better fuel economy; excellent package.

The output figures are achieved due to the 1,498cc unit’s bore and stroke of 74.5mm and 85.9mm respectively and a compression ratio of 10.5, and give the Tarraco a top speed of 125mph. The larger 2.0-litre TSI engine benefits from a bore of 82.5mm and a stroke of 92.8mm with
a compression ratio of 11.65 and produces its maximum power output of 190PS between 4,200rpm and 6,000rpm. The engine’s enormous amount of torque, 320Nm, is delivered at 1,500-4,100rpm. The larger petrol engine helps the Tarraco reach 62mph in just 8 seconds and gives it a top speed of 131mph. There are two diesel options, both 2.0-litre TDIs, with power outputs of 150PS and 190PS respectively. Overall performance in the two-wheel drive version is gratifying with a top speed of 126mph and a 0-62mph time of 9.8 seconds. Even in all-wheel drive format the Tarraco is still no slouch with a top speed of 123mph and an identical sprint time. The higher-powered diesel engine is solely available in 4Drive/seven-speed DSG gearbox format. Performance is striking with a top speed of 130mph and the ability to reach 62mph in only 8 seconds. Chassis The SEAT Tarraco has been engineered for drivers looking for both excitement and functionality from one vehicle: people who need the practicality of seven seats and the space to transport family and friends, but appreciate a vehicle that reacts to the driver’s inputs and offers dynamic performance. The key to its nuanced approach to practicality and dynamic behaviour is the latest technology from Volkswagen Group and the MQB-A long wheelbase architecture that underpins the large SUV. ES picks up the baton and prepares Lexus to challenge best of Europe Andrew Walker runs the rule over Lexus’s new big hope, the exciting ES For those of you lucky enough to drive an executive saloon as your company vehicle, you’ll be well aware of Lexus. Lexus has been in the UK for 30 years, with the large LS the first offering, and since then has proved to be the choice for customers who put comfort, quality and customer care above driving dynamics. The latest large Lexus saloon to hit our streets is the ES, which offers buyers the opportunity to have a hybrid executive car, a middle ground between petrol/diesel and the EV offerings on their way from Germany very soon. The ES is actually a new name in Europe. Launched at the same time as the LS, the ES has become the firm’s biggest selling model, shifting over 2.3 million units. In Europe and the UK it replaces the GS, which I always liked and comes with just a single hybrid powertrain. The new model uses a new 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine which unlike the GS, powers the front wheels. This is combined with the Toyota/ Lexus electric motor which together offers 215bhp. There are four models in the ES range; ES from £35,150, ES Premium Pack from £38,650, F Sport from £38,150 and range topping Takumi, the model we tested, from £45,650. First and foremost, the ES looks good, with an aggressive sloping front end featuring Lexus’ signature zigzag front grille, wrap around headlights, a sleek roofline that curves into the rear window, all finished off with a snub-nosed boot lid. Inside, the ES displays all of the quality that customers have come to expect of Lexus. High
quality, soft touch plastics adorn the dashboard and door panels, with a touch of Shimamoku wood here and there, as well as on the steering wheel. Design details include two cylindrical buttons above the steering wheel which jut out like horns from the dash, one of which controls the driving functions, Normal, Eco and Sport. The EV function is selected by pressing a button between the front seats. The dash is dominated by the 12.3” multimedia screen with remote touch interface, featuring Lexus. The Takumi spec features heated leather seats and a heated steering wheel with these switches also mounted on the centre of the dash. For connectivity, there’s two USB connections and an Aux in. Disappointingly, you
can’t utilise Apple CarPlay or Android Auto in the ES. Google Maps to my mind, is superior to all in-car own build SatNavs, probably because it’s more familiar than any manufacturer system. While your phone will charge via USB and there’s a charging pad, it won’t do anything else, with Bluetooth the only way to connect to the hands-free phone system The steering wheel controls allow the driver to access the infotainment system and set up the adaptive cruise control. The infotainment options are controlled by a square touch pad next to the gear stick. It’s sensitive and takes a while to get used to, in my case the best part of a week, but once you’ve adapted your finger play it’s quite straightforward to use, with the screen offering clear, crisp imaging. Both up front and in the rear, passengers will want for nothing. The ES offers plenty of space, with acres of rear leg room. The seats are lovely, finished in supple leather. There’s a drop down armrest in the rear with two cup holders and in the front, two more cup holders in the centre console, a front centre arm rest with storage which can be opened from the left or the right and two decent sized door pockets. The front seats offer 10-way adjustment with memory function included. The boot opens and closes with an power button and for storage, offers up to a useful 454 litres. Access to the load space is good and there’s a flat bottom to the boot floor as well, with some storage on offer underneath. Continued on page 70

Continued from page 69 Being a Lexus, safety features are second to none. The ES features the Lexus Safety+ system with Pre Collision Safety, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist, Sway Warning, Road Sign Assist and Adaptive High-Beam Assist. And there’s also VSC, Traction Control, Hill-Start Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and a Blind Spot Monitor The Takumi comes with a Mark Levinson 17 Speaker Audio System, which is sublime. I undertook a seven-hour motorway round trip in the ES and loved the sound from the DAB radio and the Bluetooth connection to my iPhone was remarkably crisp and clear. The ES is basically built for motorway cruising and this is where it really shines. Huge distances can be covered and when you arrive at your destination, the ES delivers you feeling fresh and calm. The suspension and handling are also exemplary, adding to the overall feeling of calm. It’s a different story around town though. The CVT gearbox coupled with the hybrid powertrain does not offer any real driver-car

interaction, the kind you’ll find when you drive a BMW 520d, for example. Go hard on the throttle and the revs leap and the engine roars, but not much else happens, even in Sport Mode. There’s just no mid-range torque to excite and even with a claimed 0-62mph time of 8.9 seconds, there’s a genuine lack of overtaking ability as well. Despite this lack of thrills, when you actually stop and consider the model’s fuel economy and CO2 emissions, things become an awful lot clearer. It’s not been designed to out-grunt a BMW, Audi or Mercedes; rather, it’s actually been built to be a comfortable, frugal and cost effective executive saloon. With a BIK of 25 per cent, a combined fuel economy of 48.5 mpg and CO2 emissions of 103g/km, what it will do is save you money. Indeed, without trying and driving in Eco mode, our 500 miles
of motorway driving saw us average 48.5 mpg, which was highly impressive, and this figure only fell slightly to 47.2mpg after some short urban journeys later in the week. When the time came to hand the ES back I was disappointed, quite frankly. While not being a thrill-a-minute motor and definitely not being as engaging as the German competition, it does manage to pull off the trick of being incredibly relaxing to be in while at the same time surrounding you with some serious top notch fixtures and fittings, further enhancing the feel-good factor. Only the CVT gearbox and the lack of phone connectivity let’s the ES down. Despite these misgivings, if you’re all about saving yourself a bob or two, and you do an awful lot of stressful long-distance driving, then the ES really is a no brainer.
Verdict A few misgivings, particularly round the lack of poke in the mid-range revs, but a sophisticated and smooth executive long-range cruiser that will save you some serious cash in the long run CC&V RATING: N N N N
