The buds are blossoming on the trees, the geese are back in the city and nearly all the massive puddles have dried. It’s pretty safe to say spring is here! It’s funny how when the season turns I notice an inner energy shift. I totally see it in others, too. Do you notice it? It’s almost Photo by Kiriako Iatridis as if we are sleepy bears coming out of winter hibernation, and by the time May rolls around, we are ready to get at it. So what are you ready to tackle? Maybe it will be cleaning your closet or trying something new. Maybe you will even look at how you can give back to your community or help others since you are feeling so darn good about spring’s return! My goal is to be more organized and make more time for family. This month’s cover feature on Mamas 4 Mamas definitely lands on the ambitious side of giving back – working to help mothers on a global scale. I cannot help but be completely inspired and grateful for the time, effort and compassion this non-profit organization provides women and children in need around the world. Read the story to see how you can make a difference by attending one of their signature local events. As Canadians, we are privileged to live in a country where expectant and new mothers have access to comprehensive health services and a wide range of resources and programs designed to offer support in the days, weeks, and months leading up to and following childbirth. For mothers in developing nations however, this is seldom the case. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), an estimated 287,000 mothers – 99% of whom are located in developing countries – die each year from complications related to pregnancy and childbirth. The implications of this are further compounded when considered alongside the sobering reality that children who lose their mothers under these circumstances are up to 10 times more likely to die prematurely as well, many within the first few months of life. What’s worse is that the vast majority of these infant and maternal deaths are, by their very nature, preventable.
Regina Open Door Society (RODS; http://www.rods.sk.ca/), a nonprofit organization that provides a variety of assistive services to refugees and immigrants in Regina and surrounding areas. She spoke with great fondness about not only the organization, but also her colleagues for the support they have demonstrated through her pursuit of various international development opportunities, her path to motherhood, and the establishment and growth of Mamas 4 Mamas. “We all share a similar passion for helping others,” she says. “I instantly felt I fit in with this group of people.” As one might reasonably expect, however, Erin’s greatest source of support in all avenues of her life, continues to be her husband, Andres.
Oftentimes women in developing countries are offered very little care or love during the [birthing] process, so our goal is to help provide continuous care to those in need. Erin MacAulay Davalos – a new mom and recent transfer to Saskatchewan – is putting her passion for humanitarianism and social justice to use in order to combat statistics like the ones cited above. In September of 2014, she – with the help of a team that includes both her mother (Carolyn Bochoff MacAulay) and husband (Andres Davalos) – launched Mamas 4 Mamas, a Saskatchewan-based non-profit organization dedicated to supporting maternal and infant health projects in under-served communities around the world.
“It can be difficult to work in the field of international development and still nurture a serious relationship or a family, but Andres has always been there for me,” she says. “We make a great team and I am lucky to have him.” Shortly following her relocation to Saskatchewan, Erin and Andres decided to start a family but were presented with an unforeseen obstacle: infertility. The couple spent the better part of three years
As an organization, Mamas 4 Mamas has three primary goals: to improve maternal health, reduce infant mortality, and support global communities. The initiative is operated by volunteers and relies exclusively on fundraising and donor support. “We believe women should have access to quality prenatal care during pregnancy, skilled care during delivery and support following childbirth,” explains Erin, whose interest in international development led her to study Human Geography at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. “Oftentimes women in developing countries are offered very little care or love during the [birthing] process, so our goal is to help provide continuous care to those in need.” Toward the end of her undergraduate career and during a trip to Saskatchewan to visit friends, Erin – a native of the small town of Lake Echo, Nova Scotia – met Andres. This chance meeting led to what she referred to affectionately as a “whirlwind romance,” one that would culminate in a wedding and a move to Regina less than a year later. “Moving to Saskatchewan was an adjustment,” she concedes. “So many of my friends moved away from Nova Scotia for work, but I always thought I would stay. Now, five years later, I’m so glad I’m here. The people in Saskatchewan are very friendly, approachable and really get behind causes they believe in. That’s something I admire a lot.” Erin found work as the Regional Partnership Coordinator for the

exploring various options to become parents. When Erin finally became pregnant, she enlisted the services of a midwife. She found the experience to be overwhelmingly positive and, consequently, an inspiration behind her decision to start Mamas 4 Mamas. “She was so sweet and attentive,” says Erin of her midwife, who has since retired. “I felt very informed and involved throughout, and it reminded me just how lucky we are to have these kinds of positive birth experiences. I knew I wanted to help women without these kinds of resources; they, too, deserve what I had.” In 2010, Erin was awarded a scholarship through the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and the Interagency Coalition on AIDS and Development to embark on a six-month assignment as a Family Assistance Program Coordinator in Mozambique, Africa. While there, she befriended a woman named Bia and journeyed with her through most of her pregnancy. Their close-knit friendship earned Erin an up-close, intimate and unfiltered look at the kinds of injustices and barriers women like Bia face as it pertains to accessing compassionate, complete care. The connection she felt to the many women she supported and interacted with while in Mozambique was further amplified when she, herself, became pregnant with her daughter, Valentina. “I have always been very open about our struggles with infertility because it is a huge part of our story,” says Erin, who is now relishing the joys of motherhood. “Now, when I’m up with Valentina at 4:00 a.m. and I’m completely exhausted, I find those moments are coloured by my experiences and I feel very grateful. becomes a beautiful problem to have.” Recognizing the inherent difficulties of balancing the demands of raising a family against traveling abroad for international development opportunities, Erin’s vision for Mamas 4 Mamas has always been to operate locally, and generate funds to support established projects and programs overseas. She and her fellow board members have designed a list of criteria against which potential projects are evaluated. This list includes, but is not limited to projects that have a sustainable business approach; respect of local culture and customs; build long-term assets in the community or communities they serve; non-proselytizing (do not attempt to convert religions or belief systems); and generate opportunities and positive impacts for local community members. Once selected, a fundraising target is set for Erin and her team. Then, they set out to achieve this goal through community outreach, engagements and events. Currently, Mamas 4 Mamas is raising funds – and, in turn, awareness for Dar a Luz (http://www.daraluzhonduras.org/), a program designed to equip women in Honduras and across Central America with tools, resources and education that will improve health and quality of life. This grassroots operation, whose English translations means “to give light,” has already helped thousands of women through the provision of training, compassionate care and other forms of support prior to, during and after childbirth. The following statement from Dar a Luz founder Silvia Bahr resonates perfectly with the aim and intent of Mamas 4 Mamas:
“The experience of childbirth affects the life of a woman, her selfesteem and her immediate bonding with the newborn. If the woman experiences more support and love during the birth process, the relationships with family will improve and women will become more empowered. It is something that seems so simple, but the effects can last a lifetime and be passed down for generations.” Erin, who is in close and constant communication with Sylvia, will be traveling to Honduras this fall to present the funds raised in person, and see firsthand how those dollars will assist Dar a Luz to continue to grow and flourish. “I want to be able to show our donors exactly where their money is going,” she shares. “Much like the grassroots initiatives we choose to support, it is so important to me that Mamas 4 Mamas also be approachable, transparent and responsive.” To date, the bulk of money raised in support of Dar a Luz has been generated by what is fast becoming Mamas 4 Mamas’ signature event: quarterly acoustic nights featuring a mélange of local musical talent. Andres, himself active in Regina’s musical and cultural scene, has been instrumental in orchestrating and overseeing these events, hosted by the locally-owned and operated Abstractions Café (2161 Rose Street; http://www.abstractionscaferegina.com/). Erin extended her appreciation to the management team at Abstraction Café for graciously donating their space for use as part of the event series. “It’s a great date night,” says Erin. “Not only are you supporting women overseas, but you’re also stimulating the local economy by supporting local businesses and local musicians! We’ve had the privilege of bringing on some of the best artists in the province; so far, everyone has been so on board with the event and we really look forward to hosting it.” Mamas 4 Mamas will be hosting its next acoustic night on Saturday, May 23rd at Abstractions Café with musical guests Megan Nash (http://www.megannash.ca/) and Glenn Sutter (http://www. glennsutter.com/). Tickets are available for a minimum donation of $15.00 and can be purchased on-site at Abstractions Café or by visiting the Mamas 4 Mamas website (http://www.mamas4mamas. ca/). Outside of attending acoustic nights or other Mamas 4 Mamas fundraising events, individuals interested in supporting the organization may do so by contributing through the website’s PayPal application; supplying “wish list” items for the Dar a Luz program (see http:// www.mamas4mamas.ca/wish-list.html for more information); volunteering at events; or by engaging in community outreach and other awareness efforts. Thus far, Erin and the rest of the Mamas 4 Mamas are humbled by the outpouring of community support and have high hopes of continuing to expand their presence and reach in years to come. “Mamas 4 Mamas means so much to me,” shares Erin. “Through [Mamas 4 Mamas], I am able to nourish so many different areas of my life and be an advocate for women around the world. This is a story with many beginnings; I’m excited to see what the future holds.”

What To Expect With Your Hair When Expecting By Joy Amistad from Visions Salon and Spa, Saskatoon
I felt nauseous, bloated, gassy, emotional and lacked energy; these are a few awesome symptoms I experienced during pregnancy. One positive thing however, was that my hair felt full and luxurious. The truth is that I was not actually growing more hair during my pregnancy (the strands themselves weren’t any thicker), I was just losing hair more slowly than normal. Here’s what was going on: normally 85 to 95 percent of the hair on your head is growing and the other 5 to 15 percent is in a resting stage. After the resting period, this hair naturally falls out (often while you’re brushing or shampooing) and is replaced by new growth. The average woman sheds about 100 hairs a day. But during pregnancy, higher levels of estrogen hormone prolong the growth phase, resulting in less shedding of hair and thicker locks. This means during your pregnancy due to the extra hormones, you keep most of the hair you normally would lose. Some women also notice their hair becomes shinier during pregnancy, or that it changes in texture (curly hair might become straighter, for example). I was hoping I finally would get the curly hair I have always wanted but unfortunately that never happened. Fun fact: Anytime you go through any big hormonal changes in your life, (getting your period, pregnancy, menopause, or going through chemotherapy, etc.) your hair can actually change texture (straight to curly or vice versa). After giving birth to my beautiful baby girl, Veah, I instantly noticed the change in my hair once again. My postpartum locks became limp and lifeless. The growth/ rest cycle in my hair went back to its previous pattern. All the hair I was supposed to lose during my pregnancy started shedding within the first few months of motherhood. I was aware this was going to happen, so I wasn’t too alarmed. If you are pregnant, please keep in mind that hair loss may happen to you postpartum, but just remember it’s just another symptom due to the extra hormones. Not all pregnant women notice dramatic changes in their hair before and after giving birth, though. If you find the hair loss traumatizing, please let me reassure you that this isn’t because you are stressed with having a newborn at home; it’s just the hormones. Along with all the other changes in your life, what’s one more change? Embrace the new! Maybe this means trying a new hairdo, but lets be real, the first couple of months your hair will probably be in a ponytail. Eventually your hair and everything in your life will settle, and all this transition will become your norm. Happy hair days!

SaSkatchewan faShion week 2015 the makeup DepaRtment By Sara Lindsay
Spring is here and to me this time of year has become synonymous with Saskatchewan Fashion Week. With the event just around the corner on May 7th to 9th, I thought it would be fun to share a little insight into the makeup department. 30 committee members and 270 contributors work tirelessly behind the scenes to make Saskatchewan Fashion Week come to life each year.

For 2015, the makeup team is made up of 28 volunteers; key artists, support artists and makeup assistants. The key artists are responsible for creating the look for her designated day. Together with the key hairstylists, they create a look that will complement the designers’ visions on the runway.

Because many of the models will walk for several designers in one night, Saskatchewan Fashion Week is faced with the unique challenge of creating a look that will work seamlessly for all designers and each of their aesthetics. There may be opportunity to do a quick makeup change during intermission, but again, the looks need to work for everything from casual sports wear to formal gowns and everything in between. There may be literally only 10 minutes to change the makeup for every model, so it can be a very high-pressured and exciting environment backstage. Each night, the team of Saskatchewan based professional makeup artists will consist of one key artist and seven support artists who will recreate the key artist’s look on roughly 47 models each night. Some will repeat over the three nights, but there is a total of 93 individual models. Makeup will begin each morning with the key artist demonstrating the look on a model to the team of support artists, so they can recreate that look for each model throughout the day. Another crucial part of the makeup team is the assistants. These contibutors are sometimes makeup students, or possibly artists who are in the beginning of their careers. They are responsible for keeping the rest of the team on schedule and making sure things run smoothly by cleaning brushes, keeping stations tidy, making sure models are directed to their artists on time and other important contributions. This role is a great opportunity for new talent or anyone wanting to get an exciting first hand look and what it takes to work backstage at a show. I will be acting as key artist for Saturday night and I’d like to introduce you to this year’s Saskatchewan Fashion Week key artists. Jenna Kress (pictured) is a talented Regina-based makeup artist who works as part of the team for a popular and locally owned beauty boutique. She also enjoys a career as a dietician. She will create the look for Thursday night’s runway shows and we are very excited to welcome her to the key lineup. Holly Decker (pictured) is a freelance makeup artist from Saskatoon who has just opened her own studio in partnership with Saskatchewan Fashion Week photographer, Erin Crooks. We are grateful to her for travelling to Regina to join our team to act as the key artist for Friday night. Each and every part of the makeup team is equally important and we are very lucky in Saskatchewan to have such a high level of talent and passion in our province. 16 |

About the artist... Originally from Canada, and having spent many years of her career in the United Kingdom, Sara Lindsay is a professional makeup artist, with training from some of London’s top fashion academies. In early 2015, a new wellness centre opened in Regina offering a unique, affordable and meaningful high-tech approach to wellbeing. Co-owners and wellness and performance instructors, Dami Egbeyemi and Adam Chomos, opened NeuroFitness Wellness Centre with a shared, holistic vision for personal wellness. The centre’s harmonized training comes complete with quantitative proof of benefits. And they know they work. “It’s all about outcome,” said Adam. Aimed at helping clients achieve balance and wellbeing, it is through breakthrough technology and complementary services that the ultimate mind and body connection occurs. Services are scientifically backed and include in-depth data and reporting. So without hesitation, I was game for a visit to learn all about how I could find even more ways to be a happier and healthier version of me.
The process When clients arrive they undergo a free 15 - 30 minute consultation. This is followed up by a complete physical and mental assessment. Then, a customized plan is presented for clients to follow. Excited by the prospect of tests – yes – I actually enjoy being tested; it was time to evaluate my brain and my body, and measure both my emotional and mental wellbeing. I was ready to find out how I could achieve more harmony between my mind, body and spirit.
THE ASSESSMENT FitAssess It was calibrated measurements and the 3D scanner up first. FitAssess involves a three dimensional scan of one’s entire body allowing clients to track physical body changes over time, like muscle group improvement, for example. It took about one minute to sign up for an account and then I hopped onto the 3D scanner. I waited excitedly and within 20 minutes I received an email containing all the data one could ever need! Who knew there was over an inch difference in my thigh circumference? Fascinating. By access to this virtual reference, I am able to track my progress in 3D! Admittedly, it was a bit creepy to see my scan – think of those airport security scan visuals where you almost look naked. But there I was – my body, all my curves, muscles and lumps. There was no hiding the lumps. (Mental note made: work on lumps.) Oh, and all that data and that near naked scan – it’s for client’s eyes only - unless you want to share, and can be accessed via desktop or app, making it super easy. Other measurables (up to 20!) such as blood pressure, heart rate and body ratios, muscle quality quotient and body fat percentage can also be included. Once I get through all my stats I have a funny feeling my Fitbit will never again be enough for me. Dami stressed that these measurements are not just about weight loss or weight gain. It’s about being able to measure accurately and record differences. He explained, “If you can’t measure it how can you tell it’s changing?”
NeuroAssess Next up was some mental analysis. I scrolled through 15 small 20 |

sets of quizzes designed to test my memory, color recognition, patterns, and my ability to distinguish between emotions through facial recognition. Though warned to take my time, my need to complete things quickly, compounded with the anxiety of getting the answers right was a clear foreshadowing into what my self-regulation results would demonstrate. (Let’s just say I have some work to do there.) Post-testing, it was time to look over the results. Dami took me through the first page of a very detailed report and explained at a high level how certain areas (i.e. how I deal with anxiety, stress, outlook, etc.) could benefit from their NeuroPerfect brain-training program with their NeuroFeedBack technology and training techniques. As I sat there listening, the familiar buzz of new mail alerted me to my inbox. Low and behold my online assessment results were already there, delivered and waiting for me to digest all of my thrilling results.
EEG Brain Wave Assessment Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to try out the very intriguing EEG Brain Wave assessment tool; a custom tool that measures how your brain works in real time. To help improve brain wellness, it measures and assesses brainwave patterns and frequencies during a 90-minute NeuroAssess session, identifying subconscious and conscious areas that may be out of balance. This feedback provides information that aids in creating a customized training plan to address client’s specific needs and areas of focus.
TRAINING
During my time at NeuroFitness I actually got to try out a few of the services as well. Dami explained that once I started coming in with my customized plan, I would better understand how all the services complement one another.
Oxygen Bar Oxygen as a treatment is associated with numerous benefits including heightened concentration, a natural remedy for headaches and the ability to calm one’s mind. The idea of inhaling aroma infused oxygen definitely sounded cool. With calming concoctions like lavender and tangerine which promise to relax and relive emotional stress, who wouldn’t want to try it? I landed on Zen, a blend of therapeutic Rosemary and Mint, which delivered on its cooling, refreshing, invigorating promise.
Float Pod Just past the oxygen bar is a room home to a float pod. Filled with 800-1000 pounds of Epsom salts, 60-90 minute floats are designed for clients to slip into a relaxed or even meditative state, freely floating in zero gravity water heated to body temperature. If you’ve ever been in one of these things you will know just how tranquil they can be. I enjoyed the ability to just be still, allowing my mind to completely bliss out, and then felt really re-energized post-float.

tell you they can – or rather, the machines at NeuroFitness can. With just a few simple exercises that worked my core and tested my balance, my body was put through a decent, though compacted workout. And I learned that a ten-minute session is all it takes. What’s better yet is that the body’s muscles continue to contract creating resistance for up to ½ hour post-workout – making this a saving grace for those starved for time.
NeurOptimal Brain-training with NeuroTracker This brain-training includes exercises such as multiple object tracking which is aimed at improving outcomes like better focus, fluidly of speech and memory, awareness, the ability to breathe correctly, etc. Like the other assessment tools, all the progress is measurable. Though I struggled at first, after a few rounds of tracking, I continued to improve making it easy to see over

time how this type of exercise would benefit anyone struggling with concentration and focus.

Spring is in full swing, farmers markets are increasing their presence and summertime’s ‘skin is in’ theme is coming quick. This month let’s cover smart shopping so you can strut your short shorts when the sun is out. Many of us have great intentions and feel motivated when we want to make a change. We commit to be more conscious of what and when we eat. We sign up for gym memberships and start working out. Even though we think we are making smart choices, we sometimes come to find out some decisions are actually hindering our progress. Living a healthy lifestyle is not a diet. It is not a short-term commitment, gimmick or quick fix. There are no magic pills to living healthy and happy, and there are no short cuts. Herein lies the breakthrough; once we come to the realization that the work you put in to living healthy and taking care of yourself will yield dividends for years to come, it only gets easier, more rewarding and fun. Once you decide to accept fitness, it will accept you no matter your age, weight, social status or salary. It does not care, it has no ulterior motive and it wants the best for you. You just have to simply choose it. To commit to your healthiest lifestyle, you simply need to stop excusing yourself for failing YOU. Make a promise to never break a promise you make to yourself. We commit to others all day long: deadlines, appointments, obligations, logistics … We try our hardest every day to step up to duties we’ve taken on so not to let anyone down. But many times by doing this, our ambitions end up last, and promises and commitments to ourselves end up being the first ones broken. Not ok. Change this and you change your life. When you stay true to you, you are a much better person to the world that surrounds you. You are much more capable to take on any task and you find that your successes may lead you to paths you did not know existed. Be open to this and you succeed even further, making you an unstoppable force for years to come. So with the rah rah rah of the above paragraph and now that I have your attention, let’s start with the place that can make or break your success … the grocery store. The grocery store is a place we hold with such positive connotation, but it is the largest enabler you will ever encounter, and truthfully it does not want you to succeed. In preparation for this month’s article I did some research and was so surprised at my findings. But now applying it to my past grocery store visits, it all makes sense and has definitely enabled me in the past to make choices I might not have if I had known better. With that said, and my newfound knowledge retained, I want to share this with you to help you succeed in the aisles of the grocery store. And ultimately to live your healthiest life ever! 24 |

We are so suppressed to the millions of messages we are exposed to on a daily basis, ‘buy this, choose that, wear this, drink that, go here, purchase there, eat this, try that’ - it’s amazing. The ability to make proper decisions comes down to the knowledge that we have to be consumer smart. Here’s how!

5 Supermarket Tips for a Healthy Lifestyle:
Keep your shopping to the point and avoid shopping with influencers that will emotionally grab goodies and add to the cart.
1) Stay away from the aisles and shop the parameter: This is where the fresh, whole food items are kept - ingredients that help us live our healthiest lifestyle. Purchase items without an ingredient label or with very few ingredients on the back. Select products that are as close from farm to table as possible. This can be tough for us in the winter months, but now that spring and summer are here, we can take advantage of our province’s local bounty.
Have a mini meal before shopping. This way you can purchase what you need instead of what the grocery store is marketing you to buy … the packaged goods that sound so good, the baked goods that smell so good, and everything in between.
Have a snack option for the drive home ready for you. This can be a serving of nuts, veggies or a protein shake. If you feel the need for hand to mouth, make sure its something that will help you succeed and not hinder your success. *Outsmart the grocery store: Grocery stores are set up strategically to welcome you. They usually start your experience with a display of fresh flowers at the entrance; stimulating the eyes with the produce section that follow the flowers. Then to make you hungry and encourage you to shop emotionally, there lays the bakery. We first shop with our eyes and then are stimulated by smell to shop for everything in sight. By eating before you shop, you will not be

Do not feel the need to buy pre-packaged foods just so that you can limit your grocery shopping to one day a week. The convenience of grabbing fresh food is much better for your healthy lifestyle. Avoid canned, packaged or preserved foods, or items that use a lot of additives to elongate shelf life. *Outsmart the grocery store: Avoid the ‘end cap’ trap. End caps of isles are filled with ‘deal’ items that are there to lure you in and lead you through the aisles. This way you can purchase items you don’t need and leave more money at the store and in the companies’ pockets. These items are typically not nutrient dense, nor conducive to your goals of living your healthiest lifestyle. 2) Eat before you shop and be prepared for the drive home: If you are a typical snacker as you shop, after you shop and on the way home from shopping, prepare in advance and don’t leave it to the baking section of your grocery store. Mindless snacking will add to your daily calories without even registering as a meal and signaling satiation to your appetite. You will still head home to have supper regardless of the snack habit.

You can create a snack out of any healthy option you are eating. The more color the better. Have fun with it! Try something new and mix things you normally wouldn’t. Create your own yogurt cups, overnight oats, veggie mixes, mini quiches, pancakes or fruit and nut mixes. The options are limitless and can all be created from whole foods prepared by you. It does not mean hours of slaving in the kitchen. It just takes a bit of preparation and planning. Save the cost of having them package it for you and use it to buy Tupperware and a cooler bag that you can take with you for the day. This makes staying on track much easier. As you put the groceries away, make it a family affair to prepare your groceries in servings so that everyone can grab and go throughout the day.

When cooking, cook multiple servings and use different flavour profiles to create multiple meal options with the same ingredients. *Outsmart the grocery store: Letting them add a process for you to make your life ‘easier’ allows them to create value and increase prices of items. Convenience products usually have added ingredients used to preserve the items longer for you, but usually these are unnecessary ingredients that do not aid in your lifestyle. 4) Get out of your routine, be inspired and try something new: Try new fruits and veggies that you have never tried before. Expand your palate and implement new flavours to the dinner table. A lot of the time we stick to foods we are comfortable with. When implementing a new flavour, we savour the taste more and tend to not overindulge on that food as much as we would on something we are accustomed to eating regularly. Make the right choices for everyone in the family. Do not justify your reasoning to buy a temptation item your husband or children love. Again, this is not a diet or sacrifice, it is a lifestyle the whole family can benefit from. We all know if it is not there, the urge to consume it goes away. By introducing new items, you enhance culinary awareness and the ability to adapt to new situations, new cultures, new tastes and appreciation for the taste of fresh ingredients. *Outsmart the grocery store: Grocery stores are set up typically for you to experience the store counter clockwise taking you in a direction to make purchasing choices differently a.k.a. spend more. The exit is typically only accessible once you have journeyed through the entire store. Shop with a list buying only what you need, not what the store tells you that you need. When you want to try something new, purchase the raw ingredients and create at home! 5) Be Label Smart! If you are living your healthiest lifestyle and doing a lot of your own food prepping, creating and processing at home, most of your food items will not have labels. If they do, the labels should be short and precise and legible. If you are enticed by a new product and want to try it out for fun, be aware of the hidden tricks behind labels. Sugar Added: Sugar is seldom labeled as such on the back of a product. It hides in many forms and has many aliases that may not seem so bad when you are purchasing a product. Beware of common ingredient names that are simply just sugar (fructose, sucrose, glucose, lactose, concentrated fruit juice, beet sugar, corn syrup) …The list goes on and on. Ingredient list order of importance: The main ingredients are listed first and taper off as the weight decreases in the ingredient list. This is a way the product manufacturers can hide sugar abundance. There may be multiple forms used allowing them to list it later in the label, but when all summed up, the sugar content is
larger than it seems. Sodium: Sodium is in foods naturally, and a bit of added sodium is ok, but it is easy to over consume. If you are doubling or tripling some serving sizes of seasonings and sauces, it can quickly become too much. Serving sizes: Make sure you are serving size smart. Even healthy items can work against you if you eat too much of them. Our bodies only need and can only process certain amounts before that ‘healthy’ food is held as excess weight. Added ingredients to whole foods? Is fresh the same as frozen or canned? This is in line with the convenience factor. Watch out for pre-cooked, pre-packaged convenient items. Look out for added oils, salts and who knows what. Suddenly, that innocent snack is filled with unnecessary ingredients and has a nutrient profile totally different from the real thing. Calorie Free: Companies can list anything that is < 5 calories as “Calorie Free.” However, if your serving size is the bag and the bag is 10 servings that can add up to 40-50 calories of a‘calorie free’ snack. Fat Free: And I repeat: Companies can list anything < .5g fat as “Fat Free” However, if your serving size is the bag and the bag is 10 servings that can add up! Also, by cutting the fat there may be added sugar so watch out for this too. *Outsmart the grocery store: Check the labels and don’t pay attention to the front of the box/packaging. This is where you are being marketed to and told what to buy. Flip the item over and do your research. Follow steps 1-4 and you will rock your label every time. Remember, we can choose to eat whatever we want, buy whatever we want and enjoy whatever we want anytime, and in moderation. Make sure that you have fun with living healthy and you align your goals with your actions. Learning these methods and tips will help make the process more rewarding. It may not be easy, but know there is a beautiful path through your journey and that the reward of living healthy is far superior to being marketed to or told what, when and how to live your life. “When we know better, we do better.” – Mayo Angelou I learned a lot with my research for this month’s article and my shopping experience will forever be changed. Local business Solitude & Soul makes it easy to “keep your loved ones close to your heart.” Tara Duckworth is in the business of sentiment. All it took was one ‘aha’ moment nearly a decade ago, as she sat playing with silver. A slight imprint from her finger appeared and inspiration for her business, Solitude & Soul, was born. Seeking a job that offered something more fulfilling and flexible, Tara forayed into self-employment. She began by creating and selling handmade pieces, designs with inspirational words or names, made from pre-purchased materials at the Regina Farmer’s Market. In 2008, under the mentorship of established local jeweler Megan Hazel, Duckworth’s production methods evolved as she yearned
for more control over the materials. She started to work solely with silver and focused her business on creating the personalized finger print charms. From there, Tara leapt into full-fledged entrepreneurship and store ownership. At first the lovely little charms appealed broadly to new moms. After all, what could be more adorable than wearing a keepsake on a necklace with your newborn’s fingerprint? Each piece unique, sentimental, completely customized and easy to market, made it clear that she was certainly onto something. Demand grew quickly and soon it was clear, these pieces were not just for moms. Dads began sporting their fingerprint fashions, from dog tag necklaces to cufflinks and key chains. Over the years, Duckworth has found many different ways to work with and display the charms, including mounted shadow boxes. The sentimental pieces suddenly became great gifts ideas for grandparents, aunts, uncles, sisters and so on. “People laugh when I say I don’t have a target audience,” says Duckworth. “But it’s true, these appeal to all genders, all ages.” Duckworth has even created keepsake pieces made from beloved pet imprints. It was a custom request in 2010 that would take the business, which was already doing well, in a bit of a new direction. Duckworth has been asked to cast a fingerprint of someone’s loved one, post-mortem. She didn’t hesitate and since then, the idea of holding onto someone and keeping them close to your heart took on new and special meaning to the business owner. Duckworth stated, “Just to be able to provide people with a piece of somebody, there’s nothing more personal.” Duckworth’s business in the hospice and memorial industry flourished nearly overnight. With orders pouring in, Duckworth created a new process to meet the demand. Since it was impossible to travel the country each time to get necessary imprints,

she created a kit that allows others to take the imprint and mail it back to the store. Today Duckworth finds herself distributing 1000 kits, every two months to 127 funeral homes across Canada. If collecting an imprint cannot be done, there is another solution Duckworth offers mourning families. She creates custom pure silver angle wings and incorporates a tiny amount of ash remains. Like the imprinted charms the jewelry can be worn a variety of ways. Consumers can also purchase their own imprint kits online if they aren’t able to visit Solitude & Soul in Regina. In fact, all of her instore product is up on Solitude & Soul’s website, making it easy to shop for anyone, anywhere. The charms continue to be Solitude & Soul’s best seller today. The hard work Tara Duckworth has spent building her business has not gone unrecognized. This year, she was the recipient of a Paragon Award for young entrepreneurship. Honoured by the acknowledgment, Duckworth still finds it a bit surreal. The humble entrepreneur admits she still has trouble calling herself a business woman, as she tends thinks of her work as much more of a service. “This is not work to me, there’s purpose behind it, that is what keeps me going,” she shared. She and her husband now both work full time at Solitude & Soul, and even today with all of the growth she has experienced, there isn’t a piece that hasn’t been crafted at some point by the jeweler. “People do it for different reasons; you can tell when people see the heart in something.” Duckworth is also committed to giving back to her community through charitable work. Solitude & Soul currently supports both the F**K Cancer Embrace Life and Skate for Smiles charities. 100% of proceeds from specialized bracelets and t-shirts sold in-store are collected and distributed directly to the charities. “I just want to help somebody. Savvy Design Choices for Cold Climates (part two)
Keep your home comfortable and safe during the cold season by choosing the right home traits and systems. Injury prone slick stairways, ice dams, burst pipes, draughty rooms — we live in a cold climate. With proper design you don’t have to deal with any of these problems.
The Exterior
Install a snow-melting system beneath frequently used paths. This technology can greatly reduce the time you spend removing snow and ice from your paths and driveway, and money to make them safer. It’s not cheap, but in the long run it may be worth it if you spend a great deal of money on snow removal each winter. Choose easy-to-shovel paths. Gravel paths may look beautiful, but they are nearly impossible to shovel. Which is fine if you use them only in the backyard or other areas you do not need to access in winter — but for your main paths, choosing a hard material makes more sense. Also remember to make paths wide enough to shovel. Position railings at every stairway. Even short stairways can become treacherous when they’re covered in ice and snow. Be sure every exterior stairway has a sturdy railing to hold on to — don’t forget the side and back entrances to your house, too.
Provide cover over entrances. A sheltered entrance makes is safer and more comfortable for you — and for visitors waiting for you to answer your door. Think about adding a portico, covered porch or covered breezeway to your home.
Heating
Active solar. Live in a region with chilly winters but plenty of sunlight? Harness that energy by installing solar panels on your roof, and you may be able to cut way down on your heating bill. An active solar heating system (which usually includes panels as well as a storage tank of heated liquid) can collect and store energy from the sun, which can then be used to heat your home through radiant heat in the floors or baseboard heaters. An efficient wood stove. Some of the newest wood stoves and pellet stoves are extremely efficient and clean-burning, making a wood stove an appealing option for heating a cold-climate home —
especially if you have easy access to firewood. Radiant heat. Put your green thumb to work without a sore back (NC) Gardening has grown into one of Canada’s most popular activities in recent years as a growing number of us discover the pleasures and rewards of a beautiful landscape. But exercising your green thumb does come with some risks. A day of digging, weeding and watering can also lead to injury when proper safety precautions are not followed. Here are some steps to help prevent and treat common gardening injuries: Protect Yourself • Safety goggles and gloves shield eyes and skin from chemicals and pesticides and protect from sharp or motorized equipment. • Several hours spent in the sun can lead to sunburn and increased chances of skin cancer. Choose a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and sunscreen with an SPF 30 or higher and seek a shade break between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. • While watering your plants, don’t forget to water yourself. Drink plenty of liquids, but avoid alcohol or sugary beverages that can lead to dehydration. • Use lightweight hand tools with rubber handles and ergonomic designs. Tools with offset handles make digging and weeding easier. Keep tools maintained as sharp, clean tools work better and require less effort. Handle extenders and reachers can help reduce the need for bending, reaching and stretching. 38 |

Treating common injuries Even when following these precautions gardeners can still feel back and knee pain, bumps, bruises, scrapes and bites during long days of tending to their backyard haven. So it’s a good idea to keep a summer essentials first aid kit on hand to treat common injuries when gardening and for outdoor family activities: • At the first sign of pain or bruising look to a homeopathic topical medicine such as Arnicare gel or cream to help relieve muscle and joint pain and ease resorption of swelling and bruising. Directions: 1. Lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish. Arrange half the bread cubes in the dish, and top with cream cheese cubes. Sprinkle 1 cup blueberries over the cream cheese, and top with remaining bread cubes. 2. In a large bowl, mix the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, and syrup. Pour over the bread cubes. Cover, and refrigerate overnight. 3. Remove the bread cube mixture from the refrigerator about 30 minutes before baking. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). 4. Cover, and bake 30 minutes. Uncover, and continue baking 25 to 30 minutes, until center is firm and surface is lightly browned. 5. In a medium saucepan, mix the sugar, cornstarch, and water. Bring to a boil. Stirring constantly, cook 3 to 4 minutes. Mix in the remaining 1 cup blueberries. Reduce heat, and simmer 10 minutes, until the blueberries burst. Stir in the butter, and pour over the baked French toast

Pour in the dry ingredients and mix by hand just until blended. Stir in the rhubarb and walnuts. Spoon the batter into the prepared cups, filling almost to the top. In a small bowl, stir together the melted butter, white sugar and cinnamon; sprinkle about 1 teaspoon of this mixture on top of each muffin. 3. Bake in the preheated oven until the tops of the muffins spring back when lightly pressed, about 25 minutes. Cool in the pans for at least 10 minutes before removing.

You can’t afford not to travel. Repeat that a few times. Sounds foolish. But it’s actually pretty smart. Travel is the best way to create memories with your friends and family. Treasured moments that stand the test of time - stories that can be retold. Repeated stories to friends over a shared meal. Your children to their children. You to your grandchildren. Nobody sits around and retells the story about the time you all watched TV together, or when you went shopping for school supplies. It just doesn’t work that way. When you think about close friends, you think about the great times you have spent together. It’s a hard fact in life that our close friends often go their separate ways to different cities, provinces or countries in search of opportunity. Yet when you come together it’s often like you just saw them yesterday. Those shared experiences are familiar to each of you. And, travel is always one that unites and holds a special place. It’s like a warm blanket. That time you left together on that first road trip, when you were just responsible enough to drive somewhere and find a rudimentary source of nourishment, yet couldn’t be trusted to 42 |

clean your room. Your first taste of independence. You grew together – laughing, sometimes crying and definitely drinking beer purchased with a fake driver’s license. That trip where the stars aligned and everyone wanted to go, and it was the best of times. And it will always be remembered as the best vacation ever. This time spent together is so great because of what it’s not. It’s not routine. It’s not boring. It’s not life. It’s what life is supposed to be. It’s about exploring and growing. Learning the easy way and the hard. And when it’s with your friends, even the bad becomes good over time. Because something going wrong is inevitably what makes the story great. Great stories are not about perfection. They are anything but. Family time travelling is no different. You remember time spent together just goofing off with your brothers and sisters on some road trip. You share smiles over the good, you share laughs over the bad. A family of four sleeping in a Monte Carlo on the side of the road in South Dakota now seems funny and something to celebrate. So is eating wieners steamed with hot water in a hotel bathroom sink.The stories are sometimes so amusing your friends ask you to tell them. Amusing in a good way. Anything
but boring.They become legendary. And when the day comes you begin to take your kids on your own road trips, you are creating those memories that you once lived and enjoy sharing. Sometimes it’s travelling to distant lands, sometimes it’s setting up the tent in the backyard. It doesn’t matter. Kids are much more perceptive than they are given credit for, and they are able to live in the moment. Create an expectation of exploration and that becomes their norm. They crave it. It becomes part of who they are now and who they will become. My children have seen things and been places I only dreamed of as a kid. It is their new normal. They know no bounds; nothing is off limits or out of the realm of possibility. At this time they lack the understanding of the financial aspect of travelling but they don’t need to understand it yet. They know what it means to them and why it is special. And so do I, although I often avoid understanding it until the bill comes. But I never regret it. Travel is important. It’s far from ordinary. It brings us together today, and tomorrow. When we are together, or apart. Young and old. Sometimes it’s over the holidays when you get together. Sometimes it’s a phone call or just a text. Sometimes it’s that #ThrowbackThursday / #tbt photo you post. It’s all good. Find time in your schedule. Find the money in your budget. Find your next memories. Our travel memories are our life’s story. You can’t afford not to travel.

Are Your Investments Getting Enough Exercise?
Now that spring has arrived, it’s easier to get outside to run, bike or take part in other physical activities you enjoy. And the more active you are, the more efficiently your body will work. This conventional wisdom can hold true for your investments: The more “exercise” they get, the more potential they have to work on your behalf. Just how can your investments get more exercise? Through lots of activity in at least two ways: systematic investing and dividend reinvestment. How Systematic Investing Works When you participate in systematic investing (also known as dollar cost averaging), you’re continually putting your money “in motion.” In other words, you put the same amount of money into the same investments at regular intervals. For example, you invest $100 per month in Company ABC stock. You could even have the set amount sent directly from your chequing or savings account. Of course, as the price of ABC stock, like those of all stocks, is constantly changing, your $100 investment will most likely buy different numbers of shares each month. This can work to your advantage, because when ABC stock price goes down, your $100 will buy more shares. When the price goes up, you’ll automatically buy fewer shares, just as you’d typically buy less of something when its price goes up. Over time, systematic investing typically results in a lower average cost per share than if you were to make sporadic lump-sum investments. If you can lower your investing costs, this may help boost your investment returns. This also can be an effective way to fund your retirement account(s) each year. (Keep in mind that systematic investing doesn’t guarantee a profit or protect against loss. You’ll also need the financial resources available to keep investing through up and down markets.) hosting an un slumber PARTY Slumber parties can be a lot of fun with the late night giggles, movie marathons and delicious breakfasts. But what if your child is too young for a slumber party or you have too many kids on your party’s guest list for a sleepover? The solution - an UnSlumber Party! Yes, this is actually a thing now! Basically you invite party guests over and have all the fun of a slumber party without actually sleeping over. This party theme is great for younger kids! Invitation: On the party invitation, be clear that it’s all the fun of a slumber party without the actual sleepover. Have a time set for parents to come pick up their kids that night. You can invite guests to wear their pajamas to the party and even hand out a prize for the craziest pair of slippers. Decorating: Decorating the party is easy as you’ll have most of the supplies at home already. Instead of a standard tablecloth, use a quilt to cover the table. Instead of chairs for guests to sit on, set out lots of pillows and sleeping bags. There are so many great ideas with a slumber party theme. - toothbrushes - socks with silly designs - slippers - homemade beauty treatments - sleep masks - personalized pajama t-shirts (could easily make these with personalized iron-on decals) - nail polishes or a pedicure set with nail file, nail clippers, etc. - dry pancake mix in a jar with baking instructions
There you have it - all the fun of a slumber party without the actual sleeping portion. You may need a nap after all this planning though!
