Cindyrella’s Sewing Quilting & Needlework By Jennifer Graff Litzenberger

FOR SASKATCHEWAN WOMEN | VOL. 6 ISSUE 12, DECEMBER 2017

In a busy world where work and family take up a lot of our time, it can be hard to find a spare moment to dedicate to other pleasurable endeavours. For Cindy Radford, retirement afforded her plenty of free time to pursue her hobbies and interests. From a young age, she had enjoyed playing around with her sewing machine, creating clothing pieces for herself and others, but it wasn’t until she retired that she could devote her time and energy to something she truly loved. After a successful career with SaskTel, Cindy realized that she now had the tools, the space, the support and the empowerment to realize that she could live out her passion project and open her own business- Cindyrella’s Sewing Quilting & Needlework and ww.precutstash.com. Cindy’s story is unique. With a chuckle, she explained, “I started this all for selfish reasons. I needed material that I just couldn’t find anywhere around here. So I found a supplier and ordered my first stash. It wasn’t until I had sold off all of what I had to others who also needed it, that I realized I didn’t keep any for myself. I was almost in tears! So I had to order more.” Specializing in designer fashion and quilting fabrics, yarns and fibre, and hand and machine embroidery, Cindyrella’s Sewing Quilting & Needlework is a multidimensional craft shop. Cleverly named after the fairytale character, Cindy wanted to create a place that would encourage the creativity of her customers, a craft palace with a Step-sister’s clearance and Fairy godmother Wishlist. She worked by herself for the first 3 months, and now, 5 years later, employs 9 staff in a 6500 square foot location. “I’m proud of how far we’ve come in such a short time. We found a niche market. We have good product, but we have even greater staff.” Cindy praises her employees for their continued success and says they are what keeps her customers coming back again and again. Our customers keep us current and enjoy seeing them weekly and even sometimes even daily! With humorous and helpful staff, Cindy says people feel welcome when they come to Cindy-rella’s. People can find help with numerous projects and are never rushed. A cozy fireplace is surrounded by yards of thread and yard, perfectly outfitted with a comfy chairs for customers to bring their work in and work in a relaxing atmosphere, with help easily available at any time. Cindy-rella’s wants their customers to have success with their projects, so support is ongoing and encouraging. The prominence and power of social media have also helped shape Cindy-Rella’s into what it is today: “Social media is FOR SASKATCHEWAN WOMEN | VOL. 6 ISSUE 12, DECEMBER 2017 | 7

It’s really great to see what people come up with. To see their faces light up when they have completed something they never thought they could do...that’s what’s really neat to see. huge...we are on Facebook Pinterest and Instagram...with over 1100 likes. Our new precutstash.com which was launched on “Cyber Monday”, saw over 70 members sign up for our newsletter and create accounts in the first hour, so we know our name is getting out there.” Cindy explained that the larger chain stores aren’t carrying product and material like they used to, and with the popularity of online stores like Etsy, and with more and more people turning to DIY projects, customers are looking to find the stuff they need locally to make extra money at home. As an authorized dealer for Babylock, Bernina, Elna and HandiQuilter, Cindy-rella’s also sells competitively prices sewing machines, accessories, and repair services. “It’s a division of Cindy-rella’s and it’s huge. Everybody already knows what to expect from the traditional quilt store. But we are different. We are a one stop store for all your addictions! We have diversified our product and made a unique system that works. We specialize in making things easy and allow you flexibility to create 8 |

your vision and at reasonable prices. We take designers’ existing fabric collections, then we pick and choose what goes into a bundle so you can have a simple, original project. You can find everything you need online at www.precutstash.com.” Another distinctive feature to Cindy-rella’s business is their 1600 square foot clubhouse. In keeping with the fairytale theme, Cinderella’s clubhouse gives members access to a gigantic classroom, fridge, lockers and any tools you may need to complete your quilting project. It only costs $50 a month and all you need to do is bring your fabric and thread. Because you don’t need to bring your own machine to a class, you are able to try your hand at some projects before committing to, or getting addicted to this unique art form in a group environment. Cindy stressed, “you don’t have to have experience. You don’t need to have your own machine. That’s the cool thing about this place. All you have to do is show up.” She added that while the art of quilting may seem old fashioned and outdated, people can ex-

pect something different at every class: “We encourage people to be creative. You don’t have to stick to a pattern or colour scheme. We are there to offer guidance, but ultimately, let you have creative control over your project.” Each Thursday night is a specialized club night. There are 4 different clubs to join, meet other enthusiasts, see projects and learn new techniques. On the 4th Thursday of each month there is a specific hands-on project that people can sign up for. Cindy-rella’s also offers group rates for custom learn-to classes and parties. Other courses that people can sign up for at Cindy-rella’s include a Build-a-Wardrobe class, where each class is dedicated to a particular item of clothing and at the end you have a full outfit. Upcycling classes are also becoming available to teach people to make new garments, bags or unique items out of existing items. “It’s really great to see what people come up with,” Cindy exclaimed. “To see their faces light up when they have completed something they never thought they could do...that’s what’s really neat to see.” Other services offered at Cindy-rella’s include rental of their machines, including the 18.8 Avanti Long-Arm for larger quilting projects. Aside from signing up for a variety of classes, you can find a huge selection of patterns, a unique online store with easy and fast shipping, quality machines, and a full range of furniture, storage units and cabinets. At Cindy-rella’s you will be able to find anything you need for knitting, cross stitching, embroidery, and the Loopy Mango used to make those huge blankets seen all over Pinterest and Instagram. With the success she’s had so far, Cindy hopes to see her business continue to thrive in a world that sometimes pushes against the traditional. Because we now have greater access to the world, she hopes to promote the appreciation and knowledge of the art form of sewing and quilting techniques, but to also encourage experimentation and evolution to combine new techniques with traditional ones.

If you are interested in taking up quilting, attending a class, or looking into any of the other many services that Cindy-rella’s offers, head to their store at #2-1230 St. John Street, Regina or their website, sewcindy-rella.com. T R E L A E B PROMOTING ETHICAL BUSINESS STANDARDS BY PROVIDING THE FOLLOWING SERVICES: • Scam releases and reporting

• Pre-purchase inquiries

• Complaint registration

• Mediation

• Marketplace networking

• Arbitration

• Consumer & business education

MOVING SCAMS Whether moving across town or across the country, nearly a third of consumers choose a professional moving company to assist with their relocation. Moving scams can entail anything from collecting deposits and never showing up, to massive price hikes, to goods being held hostage. BBB offer the following tips on preparing for a move, finding a trustworthy moving company, and avoiding scams: 1. Phoning It In. No on-site inspection of your home and moving needs = no go! A sight-unseen estimate is too good to be true and a red-flag of poor business operations or a scam. 2. The Cursory Glance. A quick walkthrough of your home without opening any cabinets is cause for concern. Your moving professional should ask questions like “Are you planning on moving all the food in your pantry?” or “Are you planning to have a yard sale? Which items will be included?” Inform your mover of any expected big purchases (say, a king size mattress) during the walkthrough. Be suspicious of any low-ball estimates that may result in your items being held hostage until you pay thousands more! 3. The Requested Deposit. Reputable movers will not demand cash up-front, or payment via gift cards, wire transfers or unusually large deposits. The general rule is to pay upon delivery. If you pay in-full upfront, you lose all control of your move and the resulting condition of your homewares. Pay with credit card to help protect yourself from fraudulent activity. 4. The Blank Contract. Never, ever, sign a blank contract. Review everything in writing; ask for a revised quote/contract that reflects any required corrections, ad-

WHAT TO WATCH FOR THIS MONTH BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU

ditions, or clarifications. Sign only after you have read the entire contract (including the fine print) and understand every detail. Make sure all items being moved are listed. 5. The “Guaranteed” Quote. You may encounter two types of quote: non-binding and binding. A non-binding estimate means the company cannot require payment of more than 10 percent above the original estimate, due within 30 days of delivery. A binding estimate is supposed to be a guaranteed price for the move and all extras and services. But, read the fine print! The ‘binding’ component is usually only applied if the weight of your goods does not exceed a set amount. Either have it confirmed in writing that the quote is the absolute final price, or be very certain the weight estimate will be sufficient for your move. Questions to ask of a moving company should include: Are you licensed (as a business, municipally and professionally)? Do you have experience with my specific type of move (i.e., multiple floors, big city, cross-country, apartment)? What kind of liability coverage does your company provide (i.e., Full Value Protection, Released Value Protection, Replacement Value Protection)? Do you have references? Can you provide a binding quote or a not-to-exceed estimate? Hair Colouring Terminology By Joy Tesch from Visions Salon and Spa in Saskatoon

Do you want to get your hair colored and don’t quite understand the difference between all the Hairstylist terminology? Today I will break it all down for you. Base Color This refers to our overall hair color. Root Touch up This is generally when color is placed directly on roots. A root touch up primarily can be used for people covering their grey hairs, or if someone’s natural roots are all over darker or lighter than their mid-shaft of hair and ends. There are no foils for a root touch up. Highlights Typically is when a hairstylist use foils to lighten segments of the hair. There are different variations of looks and techniques stylists can use when highlighting, but this generally means you will have foils in your hair during the processing segment. your overall hair color. In the processing portion a hairstylist can use foils of may just free hand paint a darker formulation within your color. Ombre Is from the french word meaning shaded or shading. Ombre hair color is generally darker at the roots through the mid-shaft and then gradually gets lighter from the mid-shaft to the ends. Balayage This is also comes from a French word meaning sweep. This is a technique for highlighting the hair where the hairstylist free hand paints (sweeps) the lightener in such a way it creates a graduated and natural blend.

During Holidays, Be Extra Vigilant About Protecting Financial Data

Conquer the Clutter

To help achieve your long-term goals, such as a comfortable retirement, you should save and invest regularly. But that’s only part of the picture. You also need to protect your financial assets in various ways. One such method is guarding your personal information – especially any information that could be linked to your financial accounts. It’s obviously important to be vigilant at any time, but you need to be even more on your toes during the holiday season, when fraudsters are particularly active.

80% of household clutter is the result of disorganization, not lack of space.

So, to help keep your important data under wraps during the holidays, consider these suggestions:

-National Soap and Detergent Association

• Extend your protection to all mobile devices. Identity thieves can now compromise your mobile devices by installing spyware that steals usernames, passwords and credit card information. Fortunately, you can fight back. By doing a little research online, you can find the best mobile security software for your needs.

Renew and organize your space

• Use multiple passwords. Online security specialists recommend that you use different passwords for each new online shopping site you visit during the holiday season. Although this might seem like a hassle, it can be helpful, because even if identity thieves were to grab one of your new passwords, they still couldn’t use it for other sites you may visit. And you can even find a free online program that can help you keep track of all your passwords.

• Be suspicious of “huge savings.” It happens every holiday season – identity thieves develop fake sites with attractive graphics and stunningly low prices on a variety of items, especially digital devices. If you fall for these pitches, you won’t get any merchandise, but you might get a handful of headaches once the bad guys have your credit card number and other personal information. To prevent this, be wary of any deal that sounds too good to be true, and do some digging on the websites that offer these mega-savings. • Watch for fake shipping notices. During the holidays, when you may do a lot of online shopping, you will probably receive some legitimate shipping notices. But the bad guys have gotten pretty good at generating fake notices designed to resemble those from UPS, FedEx and even Canada Post. If you were to click on the link provided by one of these bogus notices, you could either take on some malware or get taken to a “phishing” website created by the shipping notice PMSbest 5535 forgers. Your defense: Only shop with legitimate merchants and only use the tracking numbers given to you in the email you received immediately after making your purchases. • Keep your Social Insurance number to yourself. As a general rule, don’t give out your Social Insurance number online — to anyone. No legitimate retailer needs this number. Finally, be aware that not all attempts at stealing your personal information will come online. When you’re out shopping at old-fashioned, brick-and-mortar stores, consider bringing just one credit card with you — and protect that card from prying eyes. By following Black these precautions, you should be able to greatly reduce the risk of being victimized by identity thieves and other miscreants. And the more comfortable you are in doing your holiday shopping, the more you can enjoy the season. Member – Canadian Investor Protection Fund

5 Budget-Friendly Items to Gift a Traveller for Christmas Suffering from insatiable wanderlust, Ashlyn George is an award-winning travel writer and photographer who has travelled through more than 55 countries and onto every continent before the age of 30. In 2015 she travelled 37,000 kilometres across her home province of Saskatchewan as the official personality and travel blogger for the Government of Saskatchewan. Currently she documents her adventures and stories on her blog The Lost Girl’s Guide to Finding the World. To connect with Ashlyn and follow her journey, find her online at www. thelostgirlsguide.com or at ashlyn@ thelostgirlsguide.com.

Travelling can be expensive. It’s not just flights, accommodation and activities when in a different country. It’s also new luggage, entry visas, vaccinations, and travel insurance. The costs can add up quickly. To help the traveller in your life get to where they need to go, consider buying them these five budget-friendly holiday gifts. 1. Guidebooks Even in the digital age, guidebooks are helpful for multiple reasons. They don’t use Wi-Fi or need batteries or cables for charging. They provide detailed maps and useful knowledge that are quick and easy to access. And although a bit bigger than a smart phone, they are still small enough to slip into a purse or bag. No matter where I’m headed in the world, I always pick up a guide book before I head off to explore a new country. Price Range: $25-50 Recommended brands: Lonely Planet, Frommers and Moon

2. Scratch Off Travel Map

4. Passport and Travel Document Wallet

Not that travel is about ticking off countries, but it’s pretty satisfying to come back from a holiday and mark another country explored on a wall map. Traditionally marked by pushpins, new maps are scratchable so you can remove the top coat for a creative coloured layer beneath. Price Range: $15-30 Purchase at: Indigo and Winners

A good passport holder protects more than your passport. It also holds transportation tickets, a pen, multiple currencies, insurance documents, trip itineraries and extra passport photos for visas at border crossings. It’s the perfect solution to staying organized in the airport or train station. Price Range: $15-75 Purchase at: MEC, CAA Travel Stores, Bentley

3. Packing Cubes

5. Portable External Battery Charging Bank

I joke my bag explodes every time I open it while travelling as my stuff tends to end up all over the hotel room. Combining similar items in soft packing cubes helps me stay organized and keeps my gear all together. Different sized cubes allow me to keep related items packed perfectly. I keep my toiletries, shoes, and clean and dirty clothing all in separate cubes. Price Range: $5-30 each Purchase at: MEC, The North Face Store, CAA Travel Stores

Keeping smartphones and cameras charged when travelling can be an inconvenience. But portable external battery charging banks are the perfect solution while on-the-go. I highly recommend purchasing one that offers quick-charging capabilities. They can refuel devices four-times faster than a standard charging back. Price Range: $30-100 Recommended brands: Aukey and Anker

Spoon the filling into the mushroom caps and place into an 8x8-inch baking dish. Sprinkle with the remaining 2 tbsp of Parmesan cheese. 3. Bake in the preheated oven until the mushrooms are tender and the filling is golden brown, 25 to 30 minutes.

Popcorn Bar With the holiday party season underway, many of us are thinking about party menus. Are you setting out a dessert table with all your favourite homemade goodies? Maybe going with a potluck this year so everyone can enjoy a big feast without one person doing all the cooking? Or maybe you’re sticking to a sweet & salty snack bar so you have a variety for your guests to snack on. This popcorn bar is the best of both sweet & salty treats – a variety of salty or sweet popcorn flavours mixed with both sweet and salty mix-ins. With no baking required, this snack bar is incredibly easy to set up!

Setting The Scene: Lumberjack plaid is a really popular pattern for parties, décor and clothing this year so I went with a rustic lumberjack look for this snack bar. The background is simply a black foam poster board with a chalkboard sign. I picked up the tablecloth from our local fabric store. No, I don’t sew but no sewing required for a rustic-looking tablecloth! For displaying the popcorns and mix-ins, I used a variety of wooden boxes, metal pails lined with paper bags, apple baskets, wooden cake stands and mason jars. Don’t forget popcorn scoops, tongs and spoons for digging out all those mix-ins. Paper lunch bags work great for guests to fill with their own popcorn creations. 22 |
