Note from our Guest Editor

Life is sweet. And short - so make the most of the time you have … File these under words of advice we hear a lot but they are true. If you look around and take stock, we are constantly reminded about the sometimes very short time we have on this earth. I am not trying to be Photo by Kiriako Iatridis melancholic here but cannot help but think this way every time I hear about the unexpected passing of a young, talented woman in the province. The outpouring from the community over the passing of Crystal McGregor, a Saskatchewan great, an athlete, a mom and friend to many, is something that really touched me recently. I didn’t even know her but mourned her. From every account, she was the epitome of strength and grace, a shining example of how to live life and embrace each moment – and taken much too soon. My thoughts and the thoughts of many others who knew her (or didn’t) go out to her family and friends. Such losses force me think about how unexpected life can really be and what surprises lay ahead. It also makes me thankful to still be here. To see another day. To feel the sun on my skin. To hear my boys giggle. So this month, let’s heed the advice as given by Sabeen Ahmad, featured in Pink’s cover story. “You don’t get opportunities if you don’t ask.” A gentle reminder here to live everyday to it’s fullest – don’t let it pass you by and take full advantage of all opportunities in front of you. Try something new. Ask. Jenn Smith Nelson

Sabeen Ahmad, the newest addition to CTV Regina’s roster, has been fascinated with the written word and the art of storytelling for as long as she can remember. The 33-year-old Regina local recalls creating entire radio programs, complete with commercial segments, with her brother and his silver boom box. While her childhood hobby has since evolved into a full-blown career in broadcasting, her passion for capturing and showcasing the experiences of others remains unchanged.

The experience forced me to get comfortable with making cold-calls and connecting with new people.” Ahmad spent approximately one year in Didsbury, learning a great deal about both journalism and the unique dynamics of rural living. Feeling homesick for her friends and family, she returned to Regina in 2009. Although she was without any potential FOR SASKATCHEWAN WOMEN | VOL. 3 ISSUE 6, JUNE 2014 | 9

job leads, her optimism did not waver. “I had nothing lined up,” she said. “I’ve always believed, though, that the universe works to bring things to you the way they’re supposed to be.” True to that belief, following her return a friend and fellow JSchool graduate suggested Ahmad approach CTV Regina’s News Director about possible employment. Determined to gain broadcasting experience, she initiated contact and even volunteered to work in the newsroom free of charge. Her courage and resolve was well received and she proceeded to work briefly in the newsroom and later with the station’s creative department, developing various communications, advertisements, and promo spots for clientele. Since then, Ahmad has collected diverse work experience including a year in corporate communications with SaskPower, freelance work for the Leader Post newspaper, web reporting for Rawlco Radio’s News Talk Radio, and – most recently – two years reporting for CBC Radio and Television. “In some ways, I’m a bit of a ‘Jack of All Trades.’ I think it’s great that I’m trained in so many facets [of media], though,” she said. Her long list of skills includes video production and editing, media relations, social media marketing and sales. Despite her wide and varied employment background, Ahmad has never lost sight of her end goal: to delve further into broadcasting and live reporting. “I would love to work on a live show – whether it be some sort of breakfast show or entertainment gig. I like live reporting because it’s there I believe I really get to be myself. As much as I love reporting, you only have about 30 seconds to tell a story; with live reporting, you can talk more, tell more and give more details about a situation or about a person.” Ahmad’s current position with CTV Regina – one she accepted at the beginning of May – will open her up to this kind of experience through her roles as both a video journalist (VJ) and stand-in weather specialist. For Ahmad, her love of on-air work stems from a personal philosophy that each person has a story worth telling. Her ability to coax out and convey these stories is undoubtedly a major contributor to her loyal viewership and a warm reception by the community. “Some people criticize Saskatchewan for being boring,” she said. “When you really listen, though, there are so many stories here. You won’t hear about all of them on the news, of course, but they still matter.” In addition to her on-air work, Ahmad connects with her community by volunteering at numerous local events and actively engaging with people through the use of social media. She is humbled and invigorated when residents approach her to pay her a compliment or to share a story or anecdote. She

cultivates open lines of communication through establishing a media presence that is fun, sensible, and aligned with her personality and core values. “With me, what you see is what you get,” she explained. “The best compliment I’ve ever received was from [a co-worker] who told me, “You’re real.” Especially with social media, it’s important to be you but to also keep things professional. Your life online is definitely not private.” Ahmad’s entry into the workforce coincided with the surge of new media, spearheaded by social media and other innovative content marketing techniques. She has had plenty of unique opportunities to grow with these new technologies, incorporating them into her work and her brand. For example, she happened upon a web producer role with Rawlco Radio during a time when there was a marked swell of interest in platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. As a result, Ahmad was tasked with navigating this unchartered territory and learning how to most appropriately interact with what she described as a “very, very powerful tool.” “Social media hardly existed when I was going through JSchool,” she said. “As a web reporter, I learned to see what’s trending online and how to use social media to connect with your audience. When you can do that, I believe you become more approachable.”

If you ask my parents, they’ll tell you that I have always been into some sort of storytelling, I want to know more about people and I’ve always envisioned myself in a writing profession.

Ahmad has certainly accomplished this kind of approachability, garnering over 2,000 followers between her personal and professional Twitter accounts. Her authenticity and captivating character have been instrumental to her success in the industry. According to her, these qualities – alongside being open-minded and willing to take risks – are pivotal for anyone interested in building a career in media and broadcasting.

“It’s not easy,” conceded Ahmad. “Many people associate journalism with big cities like Toronto and Montreal, but a lot of people are now traveling west for work. It’s important that you’re willing to stick it through and learn from your mistakes.”

As for future plans, Ahmad trusts everything will unfold as it is intended to.

Through her many jobs and the people and mentors she has met along the way, Ahmad has developed what she calls “a thick skin,” accepting that others may not share her opinions and viewpoints. This is part and parcel of a career in media, as you and your thoughts are constantly on display for others to 12 |

“Even when there’s doubt and you’re not 100% sure of what will come next, you have to at least try,” said Ahmad when asked what piece of advice she would offer to someone looking to follow a career path similar to her own. “You don’t get opportunities if you don’t ask.”

“I try to think of right now and the short-term future versus long-term future because you never really know where you’re going to end up.” We at PINK wish Ahmad continued success in her new role with CTV Regina and look forward to tuning in and watching this up-and-coming media mogul’s career flourish.

the pulling and tension that can occur with this style. Keep in mind hair is most fragile when wet, so if you are placing your hair in a ponytail make sure to be gentile, or avoid doing it all together. True.

Going outside with wet hair when its cold can make you sick.

Stress turn your hair grey.

We all have heard this from a concerned mother or grandmother, right? Colds and other illnesses are caused by airborne pathogens like viruses and bacteria. Standing outside with wet hair won’t make you sick, unless someone sneezes on you while you are out there. False.

Grey hair is mainly linked to genetics, age and illness. Latest research has shown evidence that stress hormones can actually contribute to grey hair, via complicated stem cell mechanism. True.

So even though this is a myth, plucking is a bad idea. Think about what happens when you over pluck your eye brows, too much plucking in one spot will create a bald spot. False. But still don’t do it! Wearing ponytails and braids frequently can make your hair fall out. If your hair is very thin and compromised, always having your hair in a ponytail or braid can create friction and breakage. If you have very healthy thick and strong hair, this rule doesn’t apply to you. Braids and sleek ponytails are very popular right now - just make sure your hair is strong enough to withstand

nude beauty By Sara Lindsay

I am always searching for new, high quality and innovative brands to bring to Saskatchewan. The industry is always changing and moves fast. I recently came across a brand new cosmetic line, which was launched in the U.S. in May, exclusively at the beautiful Space NK Apothecary boutiques. This line and the founder’s philosophy struck me as perfect for the modern woman and for my clients. Today’s women are so busy with careers, raising children, travelling and dealing with whatever else life brings, so spending a lot of time on makeup is unrealistic and unnecessary. Jenny Frankel is an engineer with over 20 years in the beauty industry. As a mother of two young adult daughters, she saw a need for a simple and easy approach to makeup. So with her daughters as inspiration and muses, she created NUDESTIX. We share a no-fuss approach to everyday makeup, so when I found this line I knew it was perfect for today’s lifestyle. It’s made up of all pencils that are multi-use, simple to apply and include all neutral colours, which suit all skin tones. The formulas are creamy and melt beautifully onto the skin with just your fingers as tools. The colour palettes accentuate features without being heavy or over done and bring out the natural existing beauty of every face.

sleek, beautiful and very handy. Another very important feature to mention is that the line is not only parabenfree but also preservativefree, which is something very important to me when researching new lines for my store. The price point is very reasonable and everything in the line is the same price, another reason that make NUDESTIX so easy and uncomplicated. I’m very excited to be the first professional makeup artist to bring NUDESTIX to Canada and hope you love it as much as I do. Makeup just got a whole lot simpler. For more in depth information, I offer private makeup lessons at my studio.

The collection offers eye pencils that can be used as liners, shadow or highlighters, lip and cheek pencils, concealer for the eyes and face, and mascara that encourages lash growth.

Melissa and Leah offer full Aveda hair services in studio to complement all makeup services.

Everything in the line is eco-packaged in a collectible tin, with convenient large mirror and a high quality pencil sharpener. It’s

#StyleliveSHere By Michelle Strawford Is the fanny pack, I mean waist pack back?! Saturday, May 10 marked the finale of Saskatchewan Fashion Week (SFW). For those new to the local fashion scene, SFW, now in its third year, celebrates local designers like no other event. Blessed I was to share a table with the incredibly talented owner of Chicks and Girlies, Sheri Sopcczak, a local and wildly successful purse designer. Tory Burch Leather Belt Bag

Sheri’s lux bag line hit the runway blowing the audience away with the models adorned in fashion made from the same fabrics that lined the bags! Each bag represented a one-of-a-kind design created by Sheri. There was one bag that stood out for me though, far beyond the rest … I fell in love with a fanny - I mean a waist pack! Yes, it’s true! Making it’s re-entrance into the fashion scene is the ever-loved fanny pack. All joking aside, the Chicks and Girlies version of the waist pack will be sought after by many a woman looking to lead the way in fashion, not to mention function. Hanging from the model’s hip, made from the highest quality full grain leather, this bag was most definitely my favourite from her line.

Tory Burch Robinson Waist Pack Belt Bag

Waist packs are also found on the international fashion scene. Designers such as Tory Burch, Michael Kors and Louis Vuitton have brought the packs back to runways as have celebrities around the globe. With a continued belief in supporting local, I encourage you (that is if you are not already one of the nearly 11,000 Facebook fans) to take a look at Chicks and Girlies handmade, oneof-a-kind bags. Sheri auctions off one bag a day via her Facebook page: facebook/ chicksandgirlies. Made from the finest leather, Chicks and Girlies Sask Fashion Week these bags typically sell Photo credit: JLW Photography for $250-500. Because she is only able to make one a day, Sheri wants to ensure that anyone could have a chance to own one, so she also designs a Limited Edition Collection twice a year. These bags sell for $120240. I’d be remiss not to mention my love for this designer. Sheri may just be the most kind, humble, talented designers out there. While she prides herself in being fortunate enough to be able to make her designs “in her jammies” at home, she also loves to connect with her customers. Events such as Saskatchewan Fashion Week, S3 Style|Shopping|Spirits and the What Women Want show allow her to do just that, and its easy to see how fans of her bags cherish her as much as their purchase! Sheri makes supporting local just so very easy!

REAL ESTATE 101 Flip This House Did you hear that ad on the radio? Learn how to flip houses with Than Merrill? Come to a seminar! Well, I recently attended that seminar and left with a lot of new ideas and information on how to help people. How many times do you know someone who is going through a divorce, foreclosure or selling their parents home through an estate sale? Then there are those people who really just want to get out of the house they are living in or their situation. There are people who can help people in different situations no matter what they are and if they seem doom and gloom. I’m one of those people and always want to help by making a situation a win/win. I am taking the extra training, which incidentally has cost more than my four years of university but in turn, will help so many people. Other information I learned was on Self–Directing RRSP’s, another topic I need to learn even more about. The same goes for learning about how to use RRSP’s in real estate transactions. Lastly, they talked about Private money and Private lenders, as many times people’s situ-

“How many times do you know someone who is going through a divorce, foreclosure or selling their parents home through an estate sale?” ations don’t fit into the little boxes the bank requires. There are people who want to make more interest than the bank and lend their money. Good people too - not loan sharks. So, all in all, I feel my weekend away on May long, spent learning from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. for three days was well worth it and now I have more education to pass onto my readers!

If you have interest in any of these items, give me a call! I want to be a private lender as well, so if you want to lend your money or flip houses, let’s have a coffee! Live your dreams …Til next month, CharMaine

TECH UPDATE My Fitness Pal App

By Jamaal Rashid

Summer is just around the corner and that means showing off your bikini body! Okay, reality is most of us don’t feel confident showing some skin but, technology can help. Here’s how: Applications have come a long way in the last 7 years. Its now safe to say some apps rival most sophisticated programs you would normally spend hundreds of dollars buying. I would like to talk about a specific app I have been rather fond of for the last year or so. The app is called My Fitness Pal, the name says it all. It’s a simple tool for anyone who is trying to manage or even shed a few pounds to look and feel their best. This application is not intended to substitute your daily workout routine, its merely a tool to complement that. As we all know eating healthy is more important than exercise, as the saying goes “abs are created in the kitchen”.

Setting up the application is essential to experiencing its real value. The program asks for your weight, age and build style and that’s it. After the initial set up and logging in your current and goal weight, the program will allow a maximum weight loss of two pounds a week. The powerful algorithm then calculates your daily amount of nutrients required to reach your goal. After using this app for the better part of the year I’ve seen people losing on average over 60 pounds just by logging in and inputting their food. Of course with any weight loss or weight gain program it needs time and patience. Trust me, with some dedication and a little bit of elbow grease you can find yourself on the road to a healthier you.

My Fitness Pal at its core is a very intuitive way to manage your eating habits, help control cravings and give you motivational tools. All this can be accessed right from your smart phone or tablet. The application allows the user to input everything from orange juice to a meal from red lobster. The application utilizes a vast database that breaks down virtually any food group and categorizes it according to carbohydrates, fats, calories etc. What I really love about this program is that navigating to what you need is as graceful as point and click.

progress; and just maybe you can help a loved one achieve their goal too! You can even visit their online blog to get motivational support as well as feedback, or you may also hold online group training exercises. All this for a free app, not bad.

The best motivator always comes from friends and family, so add them to your friends list and get them involved with your

I could talk all day about the features and benefits you can get but that’s what their main website is for. Try it out free of charge you definitely won’t regret it.

Good design is the result of strong, simple concepts that give meaning to a home’s shape, form and materials. When you look to your site for inspiration, these ideas often arise as a normal result. A site has many things: topography, plants, trees, regional and local climate, surrounding structures, water bodies, zoning and code regulations. Each site has specific solar orientations, views (good and bad) and often a clear character. Each one of these areas is an opportunity to generate a meaningful conceptual approach for your home design. From this we devise its shape, layout, form and materials.

Together we completed the needs assessment, functional areas and schematic design phases. We now pick up at the preliminary design stage. Preliminary designs used to be hand drawn renderings portraying ideas. Technology has changed the process and drawings even though more formal looking, are still meant to be fluid to new design ideas. So please do not let the formal nature of the drawings fool you.

Second Floor

Master Bedroom This is their home away from everything space. Amenities

As close to a luxury spa experience as possible is what the owners requested. Sleeping Space

We decided to assign less space to the bedroom so the spa would benefit. The owners opt for a queen-sized bed and a comfortable sitting area for reading or relaxation. Built-in cabinets designed to house a charging station and various accessories. The visual size of the bedroom is enhanced by glass doors opening onto a large second floor semi private deck. They decided on a three-sided fireplace as part of the division between the bedroom and spa. A short debate nixed the door between the two spaces. These decisions are in harmony with the open plan concept the owners desire. This couple has chosen iPads for media consumption over a fixed TV. This gives them the opportunity to watch together or not. The headboard backs against the common stair wall and is cut down from the ceiling to add to the visual space in the room. Washroom

The option to enclose the toilet is a personal decision of privacy that allows for dedicated ventilation. Dressing

A built-in cabinet at the entry to the dressing area holds linens, towels and washroom supplies. A high narrow strip of window provides both light and privacy in the space. Many

Simplicity, functionality and livability remain prevalent features of Gary’s updated designs.

master bedroom suites provide double sinks. This couple and I agree that practice is wasteful. “One sink is enough to keep clean,” they told me. A built-in bench completes the area. The bench provides a place when needed for either wet or dry functions. To towel off or put on your socks. Tub Shower Room

The jewel of the space. This combined wet and dry area is designed to cater to their every need. Visually and physically opening to a private garden. Just like showering out doors. In fact, throw the doors open and let in fresh air, light and sounds of nature. Or step outside to dry off and smell the flowers. There is room to place a lounger and catch some sun all in a private garden. Designed as a wet area means they can splash all they want in the tub without having to worry about water damage or a mess. The built-in soaker tub doubles as a shower bench or spot to perch a leg while shaving legs or washing feet. Note: There is no expensive shower door or glass divider in this space. Glass door and fixed panels can cost over $2,000 installed. Tubs are a challenge to get into for people with knee or hip issues. This combination of tub and walk-in shower helps with any future accessibility needs. This barrier-free shower allows for a tub, but the shower will provide for years to come. Closet

They decided not to install a door, again easing accessibility and promoting the illusion of a much larger space. The ceiling space flows over the tops of the cabinets allowing for natural light to come into the space. A combination of open and closed units store all manner of clothing and accessories. Second Bedroom The two young boys will bunk together until the time when they move to their own rooms. This gives the couple about 8-10 years to finish the basement to allow for larger individual bedrooms. Furnishings meet this room’s functional requirement. The fact there is no built in closet keep this space flexible for future needs. A private glass door brings in natural light and provides access to and from the deck. Third Bedroom Doubles as the laundry room and guest bedroom. Furnished with a murphy bed, the dual function room provides the best of both worlds. A large laundry room right where most of the laundry originates and is stored. The couple and I agree that most second floor laundry rooms are a joke. They have no room to fold and/or sort laundry. And don’t even think about ironing. A glass door brings in natural light and provides access to and from the deck for everyone. © Gary Weisbrodt

Road Trip to Rosebud In the midst of the Canadian Badlands, 100 km east of Calgary and 35 km south of Drumheller, lies Rosebud, Alberta. A hamlet of only 100 residents, with no gas station or grocery store, it’s a thriving arts community with more than 30,000 visitors annually.

community in the early 1900s and local ranching celebrities, such as Wild Horse Jack and Dick Cosgrave.

Reaching its peak population of 300 people in the ranching days of the 1920s, Rosebud was nearly a ghost town with only 24 residents by the early 1970’s. Businesses were abandoned, waiting to be demolished. From this, Rosebud School of the Arts (RSA) (rosebudschoolofthearts.com) emerged. Starting as an arts camp, Rosebud became a retreat centre and then a fine arts high school. A decade later in 1983, staff and students wrote and performed an outdoor play, spurring the development of Rosebud Theatre (rosebudtheatre.com).

Leave behind your day-to-day hustle to journey through the golden prairies. After some good music and conversation your road trip reaches the peak of a peaceful valley where the river meanders through town, and the fresh air fills your lungs.

Today, the remaining abandoned buildings have been put to use – the hotel is now the office for the theatre and school, and the Mercantile is where patrons go to enjoy a buffet meal before the performance. RSA has evolved to a postsecondary performing arts school recognized by many professional companies as a leader in theatre education, and Rosebud Theatre has multiple shows throughout the year and is one of Alberta’s premiere theatre companies. As the school and theatre developed, local businesses have started to bud as well, enhancing guests’ visits. Quaint B&B’s, campgrounds, cafes, gift shops, and even a golf course have popped up locals and visitors. History buffs stop by the Centennial Museum for information on the

Whatever visitors decide to come for, they know that Rosebud is not one attraction – it is an experience:

Join family and friends at the historic Rosebud Mercantile where staff and students treat you to a delicious dinner accompanied by live musicians. After dinner, you explore shops, visit the art gallery and museum, and chat with locals who could be actors on their way to the theatre. Somehow you feel like you belong. As show time nears, you join patrons streaming into the Opera House to experience one of Rosebud Theatre’s magical performances. The story somehow feels close to yours and you laugh and possibly even cry a little. Extend your stay to a mini-vacation, staying overnight at one of the many enchanting B&Bs, playing an afternoon of golf, and eating at the delightful cafes and restaurants. The drive back home completes your experience as you cherish new memories. It’s like the happiest sigh you’ve ever felt. You feel refreshed, inspired and blessed.

was in grade school and found it enormously enjoyable. however, i well remember the challenges and recalled them even more clearly when i spoke to geoff eger about his coaching role with the Regina minor girls’ fastpitch team known as kaos. it can be difficult, he admitted, to fit in all the duties that coaching entails. “We still need to work, cut the grass, do house work and all the other stuff. it is worth it all though,” he quickly assured me, “when you have a great bunch of athletes like we have on our team.” eger, like so many others, began to coach when his daughters Jenna, alicia and amanda started to play ball in 1998. his daughter Jenna eger now coaches with him; Bruce matthewson also coaches and tyler gerrard is the manager (and coach) of the kaos team. “We are an under- 18 female fastpitch softball team,” eger explained. “We have thirteen athletes with seven born in 1996 and six born in 1997.” he has been coaching since 1998, and his daughter Jenna started coaching in 2010; this is the second year they’ve coached together.

canada’s sport is hockey and saskatchewan is Rider country, but here in Regina, another sport is held very dear in many hearts, and that’s softball. the season is short, but enthusiasm runs high, especially as players reach the collegiate level where competition can be fierce. Regina has produced many extremely talented ball players, and even those who play merely for recreation benefit greatly from the exercise, camaraderie and life lessons they discover once they take to the diamond. an integral part of every team sport is coaching, and without the many people who volunteer to coach or manage a ball team, the organization couldn’t exist. often a parent takes on such a role mainly to help provide opportunities for his or her own child to participate; i did so myself, when my daughter 28 |

this coaching team works well together because each member handles an area of strength. eger oversees the hitting and general operation, while Jenna looks after the infield; matthewson looks after the outfield and gerrard does the pitching and catching. “We also have a great bunch of parents that all take some role to make the team run smoothly,” eger added. no one seems to recall where the team name came from, but this group has made it their own. “for our team this year it means: k – knowledge, a – achievement, o – opportunity, s – success,” eger explained. “We try to give the players knowledge of the game, but we also try to impart some life lessons along the way. We have our achievement goals but we also experience many small achievements along the way, which is very important in a game like this that is really a game of failures.“ When i spoke to eger, the team had just returned from a tournament in saskatoon. “We won the B side,” he told me, “so we have mixed feelings as we probably should have been on the a side. We lost a game to a team we should have beat-

en,” he admitted. But his next comments revealed the very healthy attitude that he and his daughter Jenna try to impart as they coach. “the lessons learned from that game will help us down the road. all in all it was a good weekend; we got to play five games which was the maximum and the weather for all our games was great. “ playing ball at this level necessitates travel, of course, with several out-of-town tournaments scheduled during the season. this year started in april with a tournament in Denver, colorado, then the saskatoon tournament in may. in June the team has two local events; the Regina ladies league tournament is June 6-8 and the mlssl (manitoba ladies super softball league) international classic is June 13-15. there’s a tournament in Winnipeg later that month. they plan on going to saskatoon for provincials, then to surrey, Bc for the canada cup (a week long international tournament). if they qualify at provincials they will attend the nationals which are in saskatoon this year. “the girls on this current team have played on other travel teams,” eger told me. “some of them made trips to iowa, nevada, colorado, oklahoma and illinois. last year the kaos team went to surrey, Bc for the canada cup and then to charlottetown, pei for nationals so they travelled across canada from coast to coast.”

there are ups and downs to coaching, of course, and eger is quick to point out the positive aspects first. “the best part is seeing the girls mature and grow into wonderful young ladies,” he said. “it’s great to see them work hard and accom-

plish their goals. it’s great getting to get them working hard and having fun at the same time.” But reality sets in as the team is built; unfortunately, cuts have to be made. “the very worst part about coaching is that you can’t take all of the players on your team. it’s hard for the athletes involved and it’s hard on the coaches who have to make those decisions. “ the season is short and weather can shorten it further; this year has certainly been challenging in that respect. “We try to practice twice a week when we are in season, depending on our game schedule,” eger explained. “We have a general plan at the beginning of the season, but we keep notes during every game and we will adjust based on what we see during games. sometimes there are things that we need to go over (and over and over) until we get it right.” seeing these young women in action makes it pretty obvious that they are definitely “getting it right” and making some pretty fantastic memories along the way.

ThE lakE IS no plaCE foR a waTCh By Dale Strawford

By Dale Strawford

There is a place and a time for a watch. The lake is not one of them.

leave to go to work. It was only by accident that I stumbled upon something that would change my ‘lake life’ for the better.

As a boy growing up, I was fortunate our family circle had a cabin at White Bear Lake in southern Saskatchewan and we would spend summers there. It was and is a jewel of the prairies. Growing up with a cabin at a lake provides children with a neverending abundance of awesomeness – there is freedom, fun and frogs. Pretty much everything that a boy could want. Oh, I forgot boats. Some of my fondest memories come from spending time with family at our cabin. And sometimes just on my own.

One particularly sunny weekend at the lake I took my watch off for reasons unknown, perhaps to just get an even tan. What I noticed was that time slowed down. The absence of a watch had freed me from thinking about anything other than enjoying the moment. Without schedule there is really nothing to think about other than the simple things in life, which just so happen to be the best things in life. Am I thirsty? Am I hungry? Who wants to play cards? I’m hot - let’s go for a swim. There really is something that can be learned from that. I became such a believer in this I even ditched my watch in regular life. I felt I had really stumbled across something. My life just had a hammock introduced to the schedule that I was all too happy to fall into. I enjoyed myself more. Simple food tasted like a five course meal. Conversation became more interesting. A game of bocce sparked excitement. I began to soak in my lake experience more than I ever had before.

So many interesting things and so much time to spend exploring. Time seemed to last forever, or so it seemed, but looking back perhaps that feeling came from the wonderful lack of responsibility we enjoy as children. As an adult, there is a sliding scale where you acquire responsibility the more mature you get. Truthfully, sometimes that just sucks. Responsibility has a way of eating away at one’s free time and most people just accept that. With my boyhood family cabin long gone, I was fortunate enough to marry into a family with a rich history of spending lake time and we have a cabin at Round Lake. I love the lake and always have. I can’t wait to get there and hate when I have to come home. It is a place of relaxation, fun, family and food - lots of food. The lake has always been a ‘land of plenty’ of some sorts. Invite friends. You have a cabin and you don’t know just how lucky you are. Share your good fortune one weekend. Go fishing. Some consider it boring. But having a captive audience for a few hours creates great conversation and lasting memories. Enjoy a campfire. There is no better way to wind down a day at the cabin. Read. There is something peaceful and calming about reading at the cabin that takes you away.
