Everyone welcome Exmouth has a great collection of independent shops, lots of places to stay, to play and to eat and drink, plus a thriving arts community, a well-deserved reputation for live music, its own theatre company and an annual festival that brings them all together. You’ll never want to leave.

Come to life

Exmouth is a place of contrasts. A big town with a village atmosphere, it has the sea on one side and an estuary on the other. Its 250 million-year-old red cliffs form the gateway to the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site while its brand-new pedestrianised public square offers 21st century café culture. It’s the perfect place to relax and unwind, but it’s also the inspiration for both sporting and cultural excellence - Exmouth is the home of champions:

7

• Steph Bridge is four-times World Kitesurfing Champion and her son Tom (10) is the European Freestyle Under-18s Champion, with his brother Oliver (14) in second place behind him.

COME TO LIFE

• The Exe Sailing Club was RYA Club of the Year 2010, and has nurtured the talents of double Olympic sailing silver medallist Joe Glanfield, fellow sailing Olympians Ben Rhodes and Stevie Morrison, and world-class sailors Ben Cornish and Alex Horlock. • Jack Findel-Hawkins is currently ranked as the GB boys 18 and under tennis number one and Alex and Ben Lane, and Alice Feesey are top teenage badminton stars. • Even Exmouth’s Indoor Market, floral displays and mussels are award winners!

Come outside

Background: Top: Middle: Bottom:

The newly extended cycle path. Running on the beach, a delight. Kingfisher. Exmouth skies.

Offering safe and easy-going cycling for all the family, the newly-constructed Exe Estuary Trail offers mainly level, traffic-free riding (or walking) for almost the entire 26 miles around the estuary from Exmouth to Dawlish Warren, via Exeter. The Trail (part of National Cycle Network route 2) takes in lots

of places, including the picturesque village of Lympstone, the historic town of Topsham, Exeter Quay and Powderham Castle, to stop for rest for refreshment. You can enjoy the stunning views and glimpse exceptional wildlife throughout, and train and ferry services will ensure that if you’ve had enough for one day, you can still return relaxed and happy. Another slightly more challenging section of NCN Route 2 takes you from Exmouth, through Phear Park, to Budleigh Salterton along the path of the former railway line – a beautiful rural trail. Cycle hire, servicing for your own bike and guided tours of the cycle routes are all available in town. Both a footpath and a designated, level cycle trail run the entire length of Exmouth’s two-mile beach, and are popular with visitors and local people all the year round. There are plenty of seats along the way, where you can stop to take in the magnificent view. For the more seasoned hiker, both the East Devon Way and the SW Coast Path run through Exmouth, and cyclists with a need for an adrenaline fix will find open terrain and a variety of unofficial downhill, freestyle and cross-country trails on Woodbury Common, just a couple of miles out of town.

COME OUTSIDE

Exmouth’s opportunities for cycling or hiking in the fresh Devon air are exceptional – as are the views along the way.

Life’s a beach

Exmouth’s two-mile sandy beach has been attracting visitors for 150 years.

In the summer months there are donkey rides, deckchairs,

With dunes, rockpools galore and the dramatic red cliffs of the Jurassic coast, as well as nearby cafés and attractions, Exmouth beach has plenty of space (even at high tide!) for traditional family seaside fun at any time of year.

paddling and sandcastles (with ice cream and fish ‘n chips, of course) and at cooler times, you can go fishing or beachcombing, watch wild seas and ever-changing views, and take long bracing walks on the SW coast path (with a hot drink at the end).

LIFE’S A BEACH

It’s always a good time to come to the beach.

Background:

Two miles of golden sand.

12

Easy life Between the beach and the mouth of the Exe estuary is an unmissable and colourful corner of Exmouth – the Marina. Wander round from the Pierhead shops, pub and cafés and sit with a coffee or walk over the bridge and around the beach-side path. From here you can watch the fishermen bringing in their catch of local fish and mussels, and see the boats bobbing about on their moorings and the flocks of birds over on the Dawlish Warren nature reserve. If you’re in the mood for an adventure, here’s where you can take a boat trip, catch the ferry or ride a water taxi across the river.

Wild life

www.exmouth-guide.co.uk

13

Take a gentle stroll up the estuaryside footpath, or pedal up the Exe Trail (see page 8), to discover the full splendour of Exmouth’s ‘duckpond’.

The huge population of wetland birds includes Avocets, Widgeons, Curlews, Oystercatchers and Godwits, and this estuary is one of only two places in the UK where Redshanks breed. Exmouth is one of the most bio-diverse towns in the south west. Explore The Maer behind the coastal sand dunes, look through a window on the undersea world in the pools at Maer Rocks, watch out for dolphins in the bay or visit a Kittiwake colony at Sandy Bay.

EASY LIFE & WILD LIFE

A haven for wildlife, especially migratory wildfowl and wading birds, the Exe estuary is recognised as a wetland site of international importance. 25,000 birds overwinter here, including one per cent of the entire world population of Brent geese – 1000 come every year from the Arctic Circle to feed on Exmouth’s eel grass during the winter months.

14

Sail now on When it comes to water activities, you’re spoilt for choice in Exmouth. Whatever the weather, wind or tide, and whatever your age, size or ability, there’ll be something for you to do on, in or under the coastal or estuary waters. Exmouth’s unique geographical position, with its endless combinations of tide and wind direction and strength, makes it a centre of excellence offering year-round opportunities for windsurfing, kitesurfing, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, dinghy sailing, diving and much more, on the seafront and up the river estuary.

Exmouth is blessed with tons of free fuel - the winds at sea provide thrills aplenty.

As well as good launching, landing and thermal effects, you’ll find flat water for blasting, and sometimes up to eight feet of surf on the sand bar for experienced sailors. And with the water level never more than chest-high in the ‘duckpond’ part of the estuary and the lagoon area at Orcombe Point, beginners can learn new skills in safety – there’s always advice and tuition available.

If you love the exhilaration of speed, take a ringo or speedboat ride, try waterskiing or jetskiing, or discover why Exmouth is one of the only places in the country where you can take banana boat rides on the open sea. Prefer something calmer? Go diving off Shelly Beach and find a huge and colourful variety of life just a stone’s throw from the water’s edge.

Fun and games Exmouth has been a popular family resort since the railway arrived here in 1861, so we’ve had plenty of practice in providing something for everyone – young and old. There are shows, exhibitions, clubs and amusement arcades, plus sporting venues and leisure facilities of all kinds as well as a charming museum, historic buildings, a fascinating Blue Plaque Trail (pick up a leaflet from Travelworld in The Strand) and beautiful flower-filled parks.

Orcombe Point, at the eastern end of Exmouth’s beach, is the official gateway to the Jurassic Coast, England’s first UNESCO designated natural World Heritage Site. The cliffs here are 250 million years old – the oldest rocks in the 95-mile stretch of coastline – even older than the dinosaurs!

Whatever the weather, or the time of year, there are attractions, activities, clubs and classes, in the town and on the seafront, to entertain and delight. From a bowling club to a skate park, and from swimming to pitch and putt, there is always something for you to do.

Love arts

Exmouth is a town where creativity is nurtured. A supportive environment within a unique and inspirational landscape, its creative culture attracts people from far and wide to participate in its numerous arts events. Exmouth has a strong DIY ethic, and artists here are finding creative ways of communicating through alternative ideas and projects too from pop-up art cafĂŠs and guerrilla knitting to inspiring uplifting messages written in the sand.

Cultural Olympiad 2012 Nowhereisland is a public art project which will become a once-in-a lifetime opportunity to be involved with the Olympiad 2012. It is a ‘new island nation’ that is being brought from its Norwegian origins to the south west of the UK. It will be moored off Exmouth beach between 4th and 7th August, and celebratory events and activities will be held onshore in the vicinity of its ‘Embassy’ – a mobile museum, packed full of information and activities about the many different issues associated with this project, such as citizenship, land grab, sovereignty and climate change, as well as the island’s geological beginnings. There is always something happening in Exmouth.

Exmouth Festival The thriving arts and music community comes together every year to produce a community festival around the late May bank holiday.

Exmouth Festival The Exmouth Festival is a long-established nine-day event that showcases local talent as well as regional artists and performers. The 2012 Festival (31st May to 8th June) will be vast and varied and will include ceramics workshops, dance workshops and live poetry performances as well as music galore and its own artist-in-residence. The focus will be on the history of Exmouth, going back as far as the Jurassic period. Workshops and events will highlight sustainability and keeping our beautiful town green. Queen’s Jubilee The town will be celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee as part of the Exmouth Festival; this will be in the style of a village fete celebrating all things British, including tug-of-war, picnics in the park and tea dances!

Getting around Getting around both Exmouth town centre and the seafront area is generally easy, with wide level pavements and open shopping areas.

There are also water taxi and ferry services to Dawlish Warren and Starcross on the other side of the Exe estuary.

Wheelchairs, mobility scooters and cycles are all available for hire. Many taxi companies operate here, and the bus services both around the town and to Exeter and local villages are regular and frequent.

For those with mobility problems who cannot access public transport, the Exmouth & District Community Transport Group offers a door-todoor bus service, within the local area, that can accommodate wheelchairs. Call 01395 266662.

Trains on the picturesque Avocet line (which runs, via Topsham and Exeter, all the way to Barnstaple) operate half-hourly at most times; the station is just a short walk from the town centre and views from the line are magnificent.
