Exmouth is a place of contrasts. A big town with a village atmosphere, it has the sea on one side and an estuary on the other. Its 250 million-year-old red cliffs form the gateway to the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site while its brand-new pedestrianised public square offers 21st century café culture. It’s the perfect place to relax and unwind, but it’s also the inspiration for both sporting and cultural excellence Exmouth is the home of champions: • Steph Bridge is three-times World Kitesurfing Champion • The Exe Sailing Club was RYA Club of the Year 2010, and has nurtured the talents of double Olympic sailing silver medallist Joe Glanfield, fellow sailing Olympians Ben Rhodes and Stevie Morrison, and world-class youth sailors Ben Cornish and Alex Horlock. • Jack Findel-Hawkins is currently ranked as the GB boys 16 and under tennis number one and Alex and Ben Lane, and Alice Feesey are top teenage badminton stars.

• Even Exmouth’s floral displays and shellfish are national award winners!

“What I like about exciting Exmouth is the fun things to do inside and out. Also watching the magnificent, beautiful sun going down from the amazing, historical geo-needle.”

Ross Coldrick (10), Exmouth

welcome

6

Exmouth has a great collection of independent shops, lots of places to stay, to play and to eat and drink, plus a thriving arts community, a well-deserved reputation for live music, its own theatre company and an annual festival that brings them all together.

COME TO LIFE

You’ll never want to leave.

come outside Exmouth’s opportunities for cycling or hiking in the fresh Devon air are exceptional – as are the views along the way.

Offering safe cycling for all the family, the newly constructed Exe Estuary Trail is now open between Exmouth and Exton, with mainly level, traffic-free riding (or walking) and lots of places to stop for rest or refreshment. When completed in the near future, the Trail (part of National Cycle Network Route 2) will run 26 miles around the whole estuary from Exmouth to Dawlish Warren, via Exeter. Many sections are already available, and you can use train and ferry services in-between. Another section of NCN Route 2 takes you from Exmouth, through Phear Park, to Budleigh Salterton along the path of the former railway line – a beautiful rural trail.

A footpath and a cycle trail run the entire length of Exmouth’s two-mile beach, and are popular with visitors and local people all the year round.

www.exmouth-guide.co.uk

8

For the more seasoned hiker, both the East Devon Way and the SW Coast Path run through Exmouth, and cyclists with a need for an adrenaline fix will find open terrain and a variety of unofficial downhill, freestyle and cross-country trails on Woodbury Common, just a couple of miles out of town.

Exmouth is one of the most bio-diverse towns in the south west. Explore The Maer behind the coastal sand dunes, look through a window on the undersea world in the pools at Maer Rocks, watch out for dolphins in the bay or visit a Kittiwake colony at Sandy Bay.

Exmouth’s two-mile sandy beach has been attracting visitors for 150 years. With dunes, rockpools galore and the dramatic red cliffs of the Jurassic coast, as well as nearby cafés and attractions, Exmouth beach has plenty of space (even at high tide!) for traditional family seaside fun at any time of year.

life’s a beach

10

In the summer months there are donkey rides, deckchairs, paddling and sandcastles (with ice cream and fish ‘n chips, of course) and at cooler times, you can go fishing or beachcombing, watch wild seas and ever-changing views, and take long bracing walks on the SW coast path (with a hot drink at the end).

“What I like best about Exmouth is the golden beach, because I enjoy building sandcastles and having fun with my family.”

C-J West (9), Exmouth

THE BEACH

It’s always a good time to come to the beach.

11

“The ting, ting, ting of the ropes on the yachts…”

easy life

Between the beach and the mouth of the Exe estuary is an unmissable and colourful corner of Exmouth – the Marina. Wander round from the Pierhead shops, pub and cafés and sit with a coffee or walk over the bridge and around the beach-side path. From here you can watch the fishermen bringing in their catch of local fish and mussels, and see the boats bobbing about on their moorings and the flocks of birds over on the Dawlish Warren nature reserve. If you’re in the mood for an adventure, here’s where you can take a boat trip, catch the ferry or ride a water taxi across the river.

and wildlife

www.exmouth-guide.co.uk

12

A haven for wildlife, especially migratory wildfowl and wading birds, the Exe estuary is recognised as a wetland site of international importance. 25,000 birds overwinter here, including one per cent of the entire world population of Brent geese – 1000 come every year from the Arctic Circle to feed on Exmouth’s eel grass during the winter months. The huge population of wetland birds includes Avocets, Widgeons, Curlews, Oystercatchers and Godwits, and this estuary is one of only two places in the UK where Redshanks breed.

THE MARINA & ESTUARY

Take a gentle stroll up the estuaryside footpath, or pedal up the Exe Trail (see page 8), to discover the full splendour of Exmouth’s ‘duckpond’.

14

When it comes to water activities, you’re spoilt for choice in Exmouth. Whatever the weather, wind or tide, and whatever your age, size or ability, there’ll be something for you to do on, in or under the coastal or estuary waters.

ON THE WATER

Exmouth’s unique geographical position, with its endless combinations of tide and wind direction and strength, makes it a centre of excellence offering year-round opportunities for windsurfing, kitesurfing, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, dinghy sailing, diving and much more, on the seafront and up the river estuary.

15

As well as good launching, landing and thermal effects, you’ll find flat water for blasting, and sometimes up to eight feet of surf on the sand bar for experienced sailors. And with the water level never more than chest-high in the ‘duckpond’ part of the estuary and the lagoon area at Orcombe Point, beginners can learn new skills in safety – there’s always advice and tuition available. 2

If you love the exhilaration of speed, take a ringo or speedboat ride, try waterskiing or jetskiing, or discover why Exmouth is one of the only places in the country where you can take banana boat rides on the open sea. Prefer something calmer? Go diving off Shelly Beach and find a huge and colourful variety of life just a stone’s throw from the water’s edge. Or try a fishing trip, a boat tour round the Jurassic Coast or cruise up the river for a pub lunch. Visiting dinghy sailor? Check out the Exe Sailing Club website www.exe-sailing-club.org

Shirley Rogerson, Holyhead

come to have fun

Exmouth has been a popular family resort since the railway arrived here in 1861, so we’ve had plenty of practice in providing something for everyone – young and old. There are shows, exhibitions, clubs and amusement arcades, plus sporting venues of all kinds as well as a charming museum, historic buildings, a fascinating Blue Plaque Trail (pick up a leaflet from the Tourist Information Centre) and beautiful flower-filled parks.

www.exmouth-guide.co.uk

20

Whatever the weather, or the time of year, there are attractions to entertain and delight, and if you want to explore the East Devon area, Exmouth is the perfect base for taking a huge variety of days out, whether you enjoy theme parks, picturesque villages, stately homes or stunning countryside.

ATTRACTIONS

Orcombe Point, at the eastern end of Exmouth’s beach, is the official gateway to the Jurassic Coast, England’s first UNESCO designated natural World Heritage Site. The cliffs here are 250 million years old – the oldest rocks in the 95-mile stretch of coastline.

The highlight in Exmouth’s vibrant arts calendar is the annual nine-day summer festival at the end of May – a unique, amazing, colourful explosion of the arts, when you will find world music next to folk bands, comedy alongside children’s activities, dance close to sand sculpture and something going on around every corner. This is the showcase for many talented local artists and performers; the place to see the next big act before it goes on to Glastonbury, Edinburgh or Europe. Don’t miss the chance of a picnic in the Manor Gardens while you watch local bands in action. Enter a team for the spectacular sandsculpture competition on the seafront. Join in a dance workshop or watch an artist at work.

But even if you can’t be here for the festival, you can almost always find exhibitions in the galleries, live music in the pubs and theatre performances too. There are summer season art and music events every weekend till the end of August, and the winter festival promises three days of dazzling Christmas Cracker festivities.

“I like watching the carnival once a year. The floats look amazing and the majorettes are magnificent. I love watching all of it with dad.”

If that’s not enough, there’s the Illuminated Carnival in October and the famous 11am Christmas Day swim, which has hundreds of participants, and thousands of spectators! And don’t forget that Exmouth is one of the most popular places in the UK to celebrate New Year – if you’re not in fancy dress on New Year’s Eve, you’re going to look out of place!

You’ll find that Exmouth is very well-connected! It’s a real transport hub, from which you can take boat trips, coach excursions, train rides, drives and bus journeys to discover the fishing villages, stately homes, adventure parks, historic gardens and wide open spaces on its doorstep. In less than half an hour from here, you could be walking on the amazing Dawlish Warren nature reserve, drinking coffee in pretty Lympstone village, visiting the beautiful Exeter Cathedral or spotting kingfishers on the path beside the River Otter between Budleigh Salterton and Otterton. Only a little further away are the imposing tors of Dartmoor and the seaside towns of Sidmouth, Beer and Branscombe to the east and Dawlish and Teignmouth to the west. Even the Eden Project in Cornwall is only one-and-a-half hours’ drive from here.
