R FAMILY CELEBRATES VACATIONS 10 YEARS OF HAVING FUN
N
ine years ago best friends Gregg Kaminsky and Kelli Carpenter agreed that there was a growing LGBT vacation market and decided to launch R Family Vacations. Now celebrating their tenth anniversary season they are, as Gregg says “helping LGBT individuals and families realize their dreams” for an LGBTspecific vacation. He also says that their straight friends and family members are always welcome, too. R Family Vacations is the most inclusive international company offering vacations that are designed specifically for the gay community. Gregg and Kelli decided to launch the fun that is R Family Vacations in 2003. But these business partners weren’t novices. Gregg had worked in the travel industry for 16
years. Formerly the vice president of Atlantis Events, the world’s largest gay tour operator, he created specialty vacations in Mexico, the Caribbean, Africa, Australia, Europe and the U.S. While growing up, Kelli had sailed on annual cruises with her family. And with an extensive marketing background working for the likes of Pepsi and Nickelodeon, her strengths were a great match for Gregg’s. In fact, Kelli’s family was featured in HBO’s “All Aboard” and, as one of the producers she was nominated for an Emmy. So what does R Family Vacations offer? In addition to their core concept of family vacations, they also offer international adults-only adventures for gay men and women traveling together, and their latest, The Broadway Cruise featuring lots of Broadway performers in a laidback atmosphere, is now in its second season. The company also offers active family summer camp experiences; this season there is one on the East Coast in Connecticut and another on the West Coast in central California near Yosemite. Over 18,000 people have traveled with them over the last nine years so they’re obviously doing lots of things right. With a high number of repeat vacationers, they’re always on the lookout for unique ways to improve their vacations and keep the experiences fresh. While there have always been parents who are gay, there is an actual gay baby-boom going on that Kelli and Gregg anticipated when they launched the business. There are now many more gay couples who are choosing to become parents. And the good news is that R Family Vacations has lots of wonderful family adventures ready for these families to enjoy. For more details on R Family Vacations or to see their 2013 schedule of cruises and events, go to their website at rfamilyvacations.com.

LETTERS TO COMPETE MAGAZINE
FROM THE CATBIRD SEAT
BY CONNIE WARDMAN, EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
GOLDEN OLDIES I’ve been a long-time subscriber to the magazine and I really love the idea of including an old story or two [Apr. issue] in new issues. Denny V. – New York City Thanks for directing me to the online April issue. I had no idea your magazine has been around for so long. Amazing how far gay sports have come. Keith Jones – Phoenix
MODELING POSITIVE CHANGE I’m glad to see that hot guys like Colby Melvin and his partner Brandon Brown [Mar. issue] are using their fame to move the LGBT equality movement forward instead of just partying it up. Keith Cameron – Los Angeles
ATHLETE ALLY’S COLLEGE FOCUS Good story on Athlete Ally [Mar. issue]. I didn’t know they do so much at the college level. I thought it was all about pro athletes. Keri Hartford – Baltimore
COMPETE’S MVP Love, love, love that you brought back your MVP centerfold! Matt Stefanovich – Columbus, Ohio
WHICH SNOWFLAKE STARTED THE AVALANCHE? n THERE’S AN OLD SAYING THAT YOU NEVER know which snowflake will start the avalanche. Could you have imagined this last New Year’s Eve as we were ringing in 2013 that so much would, even could be happening in such a short space of time to move sports diversity forward in such a positive way? While you never know exactly which flake started this sports diversity avalanche, here are a couple nominations. At long last, a pro athlete in one of the four major team sports has come out. And despite speculation that it would be someone in either the NHL thanks to the hockey influence of the You Can Play Project or the NFL based on comments from Ally Athlete Brendon Ayanbadejo, it has come from the ranks of the NBA. Congratulations to you, Jason Collins for having the courage to break down the wall of homophobia in sports that for too long has kept other gay athletes closeted. Thanks to you, they can finally be who they are completely, living their lives out in the open like everyone else! And how about Brittney Griner, the face of a new generation of athletes who have grown up in a more accepting atmosphere? It has never made sense to me that the general public has forever lived in an erroneous assumption that all men who play sports are straight, rugged, macho men while all women who play sports are automatically lesbians. Huh? But for Griner, it happens to be correct. Without all the agonizing worry over potentially losing a professional career, without all the fanfare and hype, in casual conversation she has shared that she’s gay. Bravo to Brittney and to her parents who raised her with the belief that you just need to be yourself! It’s an exciting time and who knows where these new developments will lead us. But with each new snowflake that falls, you can bet we’ll never, ever be the same again. I don’t know about you, but I say “let it snow!” Keep Smiling,
Connie Wardman, Editor-in-Chief connie.wardman@mediaoutloud.com

EARVIN “MAGIC” JOHNSON KICKS OFF HIV AWARENESS CAMPAIGN FROM APRIL 12 BLOG
THE FIRST FDA-APPROVED IN-HOME HIV TESTING kit has hit the market and the company that developed it has teamed with retired NBA All-Star Earvin “Magic” Johnson to kick off their awareness campaign. You can expect to see Magic discussing the OraQuick In-Home HIV test and the importance of knowing your HIV status at a® number of public venues and through media interviews. The name of this awareness campaign is “Make Knowing Your Thing Today.” Johnson, who learned back in 1991 that he was HIV-positive as the result of a regular pre-season blood test, vowed to spend the rest of his life making people aware of HIV and encouraging others to be proactive about learning their status. “Knowing your HIV status is important, but that doesn’t mean that the decision to get tested is easy. Everyone follows a different path to testing and everyone has different reasons for doing it,” said Johnson, CEO of Magic Johnson Enterprises. “We need to have an open and honest dialogue about HIV/AIDS to help remove the stigma around testing, so more people get tested,” he continued. “The more people we get to join the conversation, the more powerful the message will be. Testing for HIV/AIDS can save lives. It’s everyone’s thing.” OraSure Technologies, Inc. has developed the first-ever rapid response test that provides an immediate answer to a person’s HIV status. The test detects antibodies to both HIV-1 and HIV-2 with an oral swab in as little as 20 minutes and can be done within the comfort and privacy of a person’s home environment. You can purchase the kit direct from the manufacturer at OraQuick.com or at most national drugstore and mass merchandiser retail outlets nationwide, including CVS Pharmacy, Navarro Discount Pharmacy, Rite Aid Pharmacy, Walgreens and Walmart.
Earvin “Magic” Johnson, CEO of Magic Johnson Enterprises, discusses the OraQuick® In-Home HIV test and the importance of knowing your HIV status with anchor Frank Buckley on the set of the KTLA Morning News Show.

JASON COLLINS GATHERING MORE SUPPORT FROM STRAIGHT ATHLETES FROM MAY 1 BLOG
FOLLOWING HIS COURAGEOUS COMING OUT decision, NBA player Jason Collins is continuing to garner support from current and retired professional athletes like Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal, Kenny Smith, Kobe Bryant and Jason Kidd. Perhaps Sir Charles has the best overall view of this historic event of an active player coming out as gay. Never one to mince words, he said during Monday night’s “Inside the NBA” on TNT that he thinks it’s a “huge deal. I’m happy that he gets to be himself. Listen, we’ve all played with gay players. Everybody works with gay players,” he continued. “I think deep down everybody has a family member who is gay, depending on how deep down you want to reach into your family.” Barkley has also brought up the fact that being Black, “... we’ve got to always be for tolerance. I never went through what the great Bill Russell, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Jim Brown and all of those guys went through. But just thinking about it, it had to be horrific. So we got to always be for tolerance and acceptance.” Talking about the NBA, Barkley believes that NBA players will be quicker to accept Collins than the fans. He also asked for everyone to be as tolerant with those who aren’t accepting as they are with Collins and other gay athletes. “I think the one thing I want to come out of this conversation though, to be honest with you is ... some people are not going to like this,” he said. “I think they should have the right to express that. We should not crucify them. I disagree with them and it’s alright to disagree. But we live in this thing right now where anybody who comes out against this is going to be crucified. And I think that’s unfair.” Well said, Sir Charles! And to quote an old Jewish saying, “from your lips to God’s ears.”

THE NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE (NHL)
… for its new partnership with the You Can Play Project, making it the first major sports organization committed to ending homophobia in sports by promoting equality and respect for players, coaches and fans alike. Patrick Burke of You Can Play told BuzzFeed the reason he started this work in the first place was because of his gay brother, Brendan who later died in a car wreck. “The big thing for me as an older brother is that, looking back, I didn’t do enough because I didn’t know. I didn’t do enough at the time to make sure that his locker room was safe and that he was feeling at home in the sports culture. By the time I learned to change my ways and to do what I needed to do, it was too late for him as a young athlete,” Burke said. “From the Burke family’s perspective this is making sure that the next generation of LGBT athletes and coaches and fans don’t have to go through what Brendan went through.”

RAISERS BECOME
Phoenix
GAY FLAG FOOTBALL
LEAGUE The city of Phoenix held its annual Gay Pride parade in April, earlier than most other cities because of the desert heat that cooks the city in the summer. This year’s event saw two grand marshals– Shawn Rea, the former commissioner of the Phoenix Hellraisers, and Jared Garduno, the new commissioner of the Phoenix Gay Flag Football League (PGFFL), the Hellraisers’ new name. As they rode together in the parade with their trophy, it was the symbolic passing of the torch from the original Phoenix Hellraisers to the Phoenix Gay Flag Football League, the future of gay flag football in Phoenix.
W
orking together, Rea and Garduno have not only shaped and formed what the league has become they have also paved the way for its future direction. Both prominent men in the Phoenix gay community, they are endorsing a recognition that competition, camaraderie and athletics are important components in promoting a healthy outlook and lifestyle. For former commissioner Shawn Rea, his first experience with the National Gay Flag Football League (NGFFL) was in 2003 while he was living in Los Angeles. Rea said that “We were just a group of guys who bonded over playing football. We were family in a way that we were good friends and we weren’t hiding who we were because we were all gay. That alone made playing with these guys easy.” Rea and his group of friends would play pick up games here and there but nothing was official. And they’d occasion-

ally travel down to San Diego where their local league was growing, the result of the first Gay Bowl the previous year and their participation in the first Surf & Turf Tournament. Soon after, Rea moved to Phoenix but he wanted to continue playing flag football, so he travelled back and forth between Phoenix and San Diego to play in games and tournaments. When time and finances started to become an issue, though, he began to think about creating a new team in Phoenix. He started by recruiting – finding others in the Phoenix metro area who wanted to join by word of mouth, putting up fliers and creating a rickety website. It didn’t take long to gain the attention of other athleticminded guys who were looking for the same thing. “A few of our first members were Rich Serrano, Brian Miller and Joe Jacinto,” according to Rea. “We did our best to recruit by word of mouth and getting more information out about what we were trying to do.”

I feel that new focus and identity will revitalize and bring a new energy to the league, to help us grow in numbers and talent as well as the bond between our members and our teams. As a league, we have much more to grow but in order for growth of talent and players, we need to get our awareness out there even more.
Shawn Rea (left) and Jared Garduno (right)
“That first year between 2005 and 2006 it was just a handful of guys who would show up. Not many were consistent but we still managed to play pick up games on the weekends with our 10 or 12 people we started with,” Rea recalled. “It wasn’t until after Pride in 2006 when players were becoming more consistent. It was because they wanted to play and we were bonding over the game.” As the newest gay flag football team, the Hellraisers gained a steady amount of people, enough to form a travelling team that played in the Dallas Gay Bowl in 2006. That was the first big tournament for the Hellraisers. The following year would be one of the most instrumental in league history. They recruited Jared Garduno, a marketing man who helped push their image further by gaining the league’s first set of sponsors – Plazma, Friends and Charlie’s. In fact, his efforts were so successful that the league was able to travel to New York City for Gay Bowl VII. Realizing the Hellraisers’ immense potential while at Gay Bowl VII, Garduno’s focus on the image of the team expanded to promoting the league itself. And by 2008, the recruitment and retention of players eventually grew to four teams and a season of six weeks playing at Colter Park in central Phoenix. “This is when I believe we established ourselves as a real full-fledged league because we had enough for multiple teams with alternates, we were consistent and we were still very competitive with each other and in our travelling tournaments,” according to Rea.
14
It wasn’t until 2009’s Chicago Gay Pride Bowl II when the Hellraisers came out in full force with matching home and away jerseys, shorts and socks. This, thanks to Jared Garduno who had expressed the need for a cohesive look. It definitely projected the identity and image of the Hellraisers as a team that wanted to play football. “We had our maroon and white jerseys along with other pullovers and bags for people to buy,” recalled Rea. “While other teams had matching uniforms and jerseys, we definitely stepped it up with other team-centered items. We definitely solidified ourselves as a competitive team on a national level.” That year the Hellraisers returned home to Phoenix number one as well as the next two years for Pride Bowl’s III & IV; they also took home second place for Pride Bowl V. “In 2010 we wanted to bring the Gay Super Bowl of flag football to Phoenix so we hosted Gay Bowl X, bringing along a few things that the Gay Bowl never saw before,” said Rea. “We started the NGFFL Hall of Fame which brought other individuals forward as we recognized all of their contributions. We also brought along night games under lights to tournaments as well as official opening and closing ceremonies.” Although the Hellraisers did not win the Gay Bowl in their hometown, Gay Bowl X saw team Los Angeles Motion as the first four-time Gay Bowl championship winner. The Hellraisers have continued to lead the way, setting the bar ever higher for National Gay Flag Football League events. It is a league that has grown from the vision that Shawn Rea brought with him to Phoenix, surely surpassing his own expectations. Rea had this to say about where the League is today; “I did not think we would have what we have today. When we first started it was an outlet to find friends. It has exceeded what I thought it would be – from the camaraderie between our players, to our identity as a team and league, to making us this family.” As Jared Garduno moves forward as its new commissioner, the name Hellraisers is being changed to give the league a new, fresh outlook as the Phoenix Gay Flag Football League. According to Garduno, “Putting the big fat ‘G’

in our name will definitely promote more awareness and recognition locally for us, instead of us just being known as the Phoenix Hellraisers.” Rea added, “I feel that new focus and identity will revitalize and bring a new energy to the league, to help us grow in numbers and talent as well as the bond between our members and our teams. As a league, we have much more to grow but in order for growth of talent and players, we need to get our awareness out there even more.” “It would be great for the Phoenix gay sports league leaders to work together to form a sports group,” Garduno shared. For Phoenix, we plan on unifying the different sports leagues under a Phoenix Gay Sports group.” Garduno continued to say that “The animosity and division between different sports groups here is a bit of a problem in recruiting. So bringing everyone together as a bigger cause, as a gay community who shares its love of sports instead of segregating each sport is one of my goals as commissioner to help grow the Phoenix Gay Flag Football League.”

YOUTH ATHLETES
TAKE THE FIELD IN PHOENIX For gay youth in Phoenix, it’s not always easy to be involved in school sports programs. That void in youth athletics is what led to the formation of the Commandos, a youth softball team for the Phoenix-based organization One n Ten.

ounded in Phoenix in 1993, the organization changed its name from VOIT to one n ten in 2004 based on a statistic revealing that approximately one in ten people identify as LGBTQ. And one n ten’s tagline – Today’s Youth. Tomorrow’s Future. – truly reflects its commitment to empowering LGBTQ youth through promoting self-expression, self-acceptance, and healthy life choices as well as developing individual and collective leadership skills. With dedicated staff and volunteers, one n ten’s purchase of a building in 2012 is visible proof of the organization’s continued growth and positive influence in the greater Phoenix community. The Commandos softball team is yet one more way the one n ten organization is working to fulfill its mission of serving LGBTQ youth and young adults ranging in age from 14-to-24 in the Phoenix area. Of the many resources offered by the organization, athletic programs are one of the most popular. The team holds regular

practice during the season that attracts youth from all over the valley. Experience is not relevant since the team is more than happy to help new and returning athletes learn the fundamentals of the sport. Experienced and non-experienced players working together to win games and have fun is what the team is all about. The team is currently recruiting new players for the upcoming City of Phoenix’s summer softball league. Beginning the first week of July, the summer season games are played on weeknights from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Coached by Jimmie Munoz Jr. the team, comprised of LGBTQ and allied ball players is currently finishing play in the Cactus Cities Softball League at the end of the month. Research into the experience of LGBTQ students in athletics has found that involvement in extracurricular sports not only has benefits in the classroom for these students but also promotes a sense of connectedness to their peers. Based on that research, one n ten continues to promote athletics like the Commandos softball team, providing a safe space for gay and transgender youth to participate in team sports and to experience and feel a sense of belonging and connectedness. In addition to softball, one n ten also has a dance squad and volleyball team. The organization is exploring new ways to support and expand youth sports opportunities. The Commandos were formed in the Fall of 2010 when a few one n ten youth and coach Jimmie Munoz Jr. realized that there was a need for a youth softball team. “I had been playing in the league for over 10 years but had seen very few young people playing,” says Munoz. “When the word got out that we were holding practices for a youth softball team, we got a lot of players who were interested in playing and forming their own team.” Now in their third year, the Commandos are taking their game to a new level. Having played in the Saguaro Cup tournament in Phoenix for the past three years, team members have their eyes fixed on playing in the Liberty Classic
softball tournament in Long Beach as well as the Autumn Classic in San Diego this year. This team is tough but fabulous! They love to play ball and they love the support they receive from fans at the park when they take the field. Any youth between the ages of 18-to-24 interested in joining the Commandos can contact the team through its Facebook page—facebook.com/1n10softball. You have a personal invitation from Coach Jimmie to practice and play with the team this summer. What are you waiting for?

SPORTS BY BRIAN PATRICK
BRITTNEY GRINER JOINS WNBA’S PHOENIX MERCURY THE WNBA DRAFT IS FINALLY OVER AND IT’S OFFICIAL – Brittney Griner is a Phoenix Mercury. It’s a no-brainer that the 6-foot-8 dunking diva with an unprecedented 7-foot-4 wingspan would be the WNBA’s No. 1 draft pick. As a Baylor University Lady Bear, the three-time All-American graduated with 3,283 points to her credit, making her the second all-time women’s scorer in NCAA history. Twice named the AP women’s college basketball Player of the Year, she also wound up as the all-time top shot-blocker, blowing up both the men’s and women’s college records with a total of 748. For most people it has been a foregone conclusion that the Mercury would use their precious first pick to bring Griner to Phoenix. But she reportedly broke into tears several times both before and after the announcement was made, saying that “It’s humbling, it’s a true honor to be a part of this league.” She said that this is like a dream come true, “I feel like a little kid in Disney World for the first time. … I definitely felt like I was going to have a heart attack.” Wearing a white suit for the event designed by Kellen Richards (the Emmy-nominated stylist for the “Ellen DeGeneres Show”), Griner quietly acknowledged her future team by wearing orange socks and nail polish. Having her nails done was, according to Griner, a “whole new thing.” And Griner is a “whole new thing” for us. She’s spoken openly about being bullied growing up because of her size and also because of her sexuality because she’s a lesbian. But don’t mistake this statement for the kind of emotion-charged coming out story we’ve been used to hearing. Saying that she’s followed her parents’ advice to “just be yourself,” this was as drama-free an announcement ever made by an athlete. It’s just part of who she is, just like playing basketball and riding her skateboard. “Don’t worry about what other people are going to say because they’re always going
32
to say something, but if you’re just true to yourself, let that shine through,” she said in an interview with SI.com. “Don’t hide who you really are.” She represents a younger generation who just don’t see the big deal in being gay. Griner says it doesn’t matter what people think about her or any other LGBT athletes. There’s been lots of talk in recent weeks of multiple NFL players contemplating coming out together and the possibility of getting signed to a major deal by Nike. Griner now has a representative who recently confirmed to USA TODAY Sports that Griner has signed a deal with Nike. Asked about it, Griner is only saying that “It’s big-time, let’s just say that.” Good for Griner. There’s no doubt she’s seen as a shining star by everyone. WNBA commissioner Laurel Richie believes that Griner and draft picks two (Elena Delle Donne of Delaware going to the Chicago Sky) and three (Skylar Diggins of Notre Dame going to the Tulsa Shock) will “change the landscape of the league.” But I suspect Griner will be changing more than the league. She says “I want to work with kids and bring recognition to the problem [of bullying], especially with the LGBT community.” I’m putting my money on Griner.

FITNESS BY BRIAN PATRICK
UCLA’S ATHLETE ALLY WEEK HOLDS POWERFUL PANEL DISCUSSION AN IMPORTANT PART OF A COLLEGE ATHLETE getting and staying fit is to feel safe – safe in the locker room from coaches and teammates, safe on the field or court from opponents and fans, and safe on the campus from other students, teachers and administrators. While we primarily think of fitness being physical, mental and emotional fitness are just as important. An athlete’s sense of personal safety can determine his or her level of mental and emotional safety, especially when the athlete is gay. On the campus of UCLA that is being taken very seriously. UCLA Head Football Coach Jim Mora and Head Gymnastics Coach Valorie Kondos Field have signed up to become members of the UCLA Athlete Allies, an on-campus group formed by a partnership between the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and the Department of Cultural and Recreational Affairs. They are now part of the over 500 members of the UCLA Athlete Allies chapter that has a broad representation of people from competitive and recreational studentathletes as well as coaches, faculty and staff, administrators, students and parents, even fans. With the addition of openly gay UCLA assistant softball coach Kirk Walker, who returned to his Alma Mater in 2012 from his previous position at Oregon State University as head coach of women’s softball, UCLA is on point to become a leader in the campaign to eliminate homophobia and bullying in sports at the college/university level and beyond. A committee member of the UCLA Athlete Allies group, Walker came out in 2006 and is one of only three openly gay Division I coaches and the only male. He is also a member of the Equality Coaching Alliance. Kicking off the school’s week-long Ally Week (a campuswide initiative that provides exposure to the information necessary to become an ally to the LGBT community), was a panel of former professional athletes and current coaches who presented both a morning and evening session. Moderated by Cyd Zeigler of Outsports.com, the panel included Walker; former All-American UCLA softball player Caitlin Benyi, now the assistant coach at Cal State Northridge; and Tracey Milburn Bailey, a former All-Conference UCLA soccer player. Other panel members included Billy Bean, former Major League Baseball player and author who left his career in professional sports as part of his coming out process; former professional rugby player Ben Cohen, founder of the Ben Cohen StandUp Foundation; and Brian Kitts, co-founder of the You Can Play Project.
The morning session, “Stand Up Against Homophobia and Bullying in Sports and Recreation,” for UCLA athletic department coaches and staff, began with a taped Photo courtesy of UCLA Today presentation by two NFL players and former Bruins – Super Bowl champion Brendon Ayanbadejo, and Chris Kluwe. Both men are outspoken allies for the LGBT community, working to eliminate homophobia in professional sports. The evening session was for UCLA students who play NCAA Division I, club and recreational sports. While the sexual orientation of the panel members was a mix of gay and straight, nevertheless they all share a deep commitment to making the sports world a safer place for LGBT athletes. And that covers all sports played at all levels, high school, collegiate, recreational and professional. And in a show of how the stigma of being a gay athlete is changing for the better, Milburn Bailey came out publically at this event to audience applause. She said that “I have an influence on young lives and I need to make sure that I’m comfortable with my self before I’m going to expect them to be comfortable. It’s emotional, obviously, but it’s important and I understand that.” In talking about the You Can Play Project, Kitts shared how he had come up with the term, “casual homophobia,” to describe the gay jibes commonly used in locker rooms, like “what’s up homo?” or the loose use of “fag” or “that’s so gay.” He says it’s the sort of language that requires an apology from the user when he realizes that his teammate, even a family member, is gay. “You didn’t mean it, but you said it, and it is that kind of language that You Can Play is especially interested in getting rid of.” One of the ways the You Can Play Project is encouraging schools to participate is to submit anti-homophobia/antibullying videos to its website – www.youcanplay.org. UCLA has already done a popular video showing on You Tube that features Mora and a number of athletes from multiple Bruin teams. Kitts also mentioned two of UCLA’s club teams – figure skating and ice hockey – for being the first teams in North America to submit a video taking a stand against homophobia.

(continued from page 36) The importance of this symposium was best summarized by Walker. He acknowledged that things are happening on other campuses but he believes that UCLA can and should be a leader in this new movement to eliminate homophobia and bullying, redefining what it means to be a champion in the process. “It’s more than just winning on the field; it‘s how you win. And how you create opportunity for your athletes to thrive and grow. And that’s really the focal point – trying to be proactive as a group about social change,” he said.

WEALTH MANAGEMENT FOR AFFLUENT LGBT COUPLES. IT’S COMPLICATED. n IT’S NO SECRET THAT SUCCESS BRINGS increased complexity to your financial life. But when you’re a member of the LGBT community, married or not, the challenges are greatly magnified. Even as states move forward with same-sex marriage reform, the federal government has yet to do so. That means certain tax advantages afforded other wealthy individuals and couples are simply not available to you. If you want to achieve your financial goals and make sure your estate is handled according to your wishes, you’ll have to work bit harder — and a great deal smarter. There are numerous issues that can affect you and your loved one’s current and future wellbeing, for example: • Are you in a domestic partnership, civil union or marriage? • Do you own assets jointly? • Do you have children together, separately or both? • Is your insurance and estate plan updated in the most tax advantaged way? If you are in a relationship, it’s critical that you know your options, opportunities and potential obstacles. You need a financial advisor who understands the unique needs of LGBT couples and has the knowledge and experience to help you focus on achieving your goals. One person’s situation is an excellent case in point. Michael owns a successful landscaping business, plus a significant investment portfolio. Financial security for his partner of more than 20 years was the priority, but he also wanted to make his partner’s daughter, who works at the company, his successor in the business, In addition, he wished to support his favorite charities during his lifetime and minimize his wealth transfer taxes. His Northern Trust advisor, well-versed in the obstacles LGBT couples face, formulated an integrated wealth management strategy driven by Michael’s goals, including: • Working with his estate planning attorney to fund a Charitable Lead Annuity Trust (CLAT) with assets from his investment
40
portfolio. This enabled Michael to take an immediate income tax deduction while the CLAT paid named charities each year over Michael’s lifetime. At his death, all remaining assets distribute to a trust for the benefit of his partner. • Creating a succession plan that funds a fiveyear Grantor Retained Income Trust (GRIT) with 49 percent of his business units. During the GRIT’s five-year term, Michael can receive the income from the trust; at the end of the five-year term, his partner’s daughter will receive the units, including any appreciation over those five years. These sophisticated trust vehicles along with today’s low interest rates allowed Michael to reduce his income taxes and make up to $5.25 million in tax-free transfers to his partner and his partner’s daughter. By choosing a financial advisor with years of experience dealing with LGBT issues, Michael achieved peace of mind, knowing his priorities had been addressed and his wealth transfer objectives had been satisfied. This article was contributed by John McGowan, National Practice Leader, and Mark Braun, National Practice Liaison, for the LGBT & Non-Traditional Family Practice at Northern Trust, one of the world’s premier wealth management firms. CHARLES “CHARLIE” BLAISDELL, J.D. is the best testament for the benefits of testosterone therapy – it improved his life so significantly he switched careers from trial lawyer to business owner, all to help others experience the same dramatic, life-changing benefits. And it’s not just for men. While many men and women understand the benefits of more energy, better muscle tone and improved sex life, it’s really the heart–health benefit that is most important. Low testosterone or Low T deprives muscles of androgen which eventually leads to muscle atrophy. Since the heart is a muscle, it can be seriously affected. Thanks to technology, geographic location isn’t important since the company utilizes telemedicine. The company physician makes a personal call for every single refill. And while they get a number of referrals from primary care physicians, a referral isn’t necessary. If a man or women is experiencing the symptoms of Low T without confirming blood tests, they can contact Boston Testosterone Partners directly. They are very accessible. Blaisdell says the difference in his life is so remarkable that he even provides his cell phone number for after-hours calls.

IF IT’S JUNE, IT’S THE WNBA We’ll be taking a look at the WNBA for the June issue that includes a great interview with WNBA alum Fran Harris. She has moved her intelligence, dedication and perseverance on the court to the world of business, consulting, teaching and more. She’s quite the dynamo! And if you love baseball, we’ll be giving you an update on former MLB player Billy Bean. He was so tightly closeted 44
that he finally walked away from his baseball career so he could finally be free to be who he was, to admit he was gay. We’re also getting an early peak at the Gay Games 9 being held in Cleveland in 2014. Held every four years, the Gay Games are a huge undertaking. And the people from Cleveland are definitely on track to host a spectacular international event.

Are you feeling tired or less energetic? Have you noticed an increase in belly fat or a decrease in sex drive? Having trouble sleeping? If you’re above the age of 30 and answered “yes” to any of these questions, you could be one of over 13 Million American men and women suffering from the effects of hormone deficiency commonly known as “Low T”. But what if you didn’t have to suffer? What if you could recapture your youthful vibrancy? What if you could say goodbye to the lethargy and extra pounds and say hello to increased muscle tone and rejuvenated vigor- regardless of your age? You can! And co-owner of Boston Testosterone Partners, Charlie Blaisdell is living proof! Charlie, a trial attorney of 15 years, was dealing with many of the symptoms mentioned above, trying to treat them individually, but never getting the results he was hoping for. Then a friend suggested hormone replacement therapy (HRT), and soon after starting treatment, Charlie was finding his energy levels were back to what they were in his mid-twenties, those extra pounds he had put on started melting off and he was sleeping better than he had in years! He knew he had found something amazing and wanted to share this with the world. Boston Testosterone Partners was born the day Charlie teamed up with like-minded physician, Dr. Michael Schmidt, who, with over 25 years of experience as a family practitioner, brought his unique approach in treating the adverse effects of aging and hormone deficiency to the table. Together, they’ve built BTP into one of the most trusted names in hormone replacement therapy in the Nation, but it’s their focus on overall health and one-on-one care that’s solidified their stellar reputation. Let BTP help you recapture and restore your youth with our Hormone, HGH and Neutraceutical Injectable Protocols. Call Boston Testosterone Partners today!
