Are you feeling tired or less energetic? Have you noticed an increase in belly fat or a decrease in sex drive? Having trouble sleeping? If you’re above the age of 30 and answered “yes” to any of these questions, you could be one of over 13 Million American men and women suffering from the effects of hormone deficiency commonly known as “Low T”. But what if you didn’t have to suffer? What if you could recapture your youthful vibrancy? What if you could say goodbye to the lethargy and extra pounds and say hello to increased muscle tone and rejuvenated vigor- regardless of your age? You can! And coowner of Boston Testosterone Partners, Charlie Blaisdell is living proof! Charlie, a trial attorney of 15 years, was dealing with many of the symptoms mentioned above, trying to treat them individually, but never getting the results he was hoping for. Then a friend suggested hormone replacement therapy (HRT), and soon after starting treatment, Charlie was finding his energy levels were back to what they were in his mid-twenties, those extra pounds he had put on started melting off and he was sleeping better than he had in years! He knew he had found something amazing and wanted to share this with the world. Boston Testosterone Partners was born the day Charlie teamed up with like-minded physician, Dr. Michael Schmidt, who, with over 25 years of experience as a family practitioner, brought his unique approach in treating the adverse effects of aging and hormone deficiency to the table. Together, they’ve built BTP into one of the most trusted names in hormone replacement therapy in the Nation, but it’s their focus on overall health and one-on-one care that’s solidified their stellar reputation. Let BTP help you recapture and restore your youth with our Hormone, HGH and Neutraceutical Injectable Protocols. Call Boston Testosterone Partners today!

TIME FOR FOOTBALL!

G

ROWING UP IN THE LATE 70’S AND 80’S there seemed to be only two football teams – the Dallas Cowboys and the Pittsburgh Steelers. Living in Arizona, I was a Dallas Cowboys’ fan. What eight-year-old boy didn’t want to be just like Roger Staubach or Danny White? (OK, this is my memory, so probably not EVERY eight-year-old boy wanted this. But I couldn’t understand why it wouldn’t be a universal desire of every kid my age.) While I am no longer a manic Cowboys fan, I still cheer them on whenever I run across them on TV. But as a young adult I came across the great sport of rugby. I got to learn the game as a weekend player and traded my Cowboys for Cardiff. The Cardiff Blues is one of my favorite European rugby teams. In fact, the older I got the more sports I began to follow. Who knew hockey could be so much fun to play and watch? I must admit, I only played hockey a few times but I have great respect for the ice (I got to see it face down on several occasions). Then I discovered lacrosse, but I only played it once and gave up. Too much, too soon I guess. Then there is soccer, cycling, boxing, bowling – the list really does go on. I’ve tried them all but, as the weather starts to cool down, my mind starts going back to football. I may not be Danny White but I can certainly be a weekend warrior. Oh, the Cowboys are on TV. Time to grab some chips and take a break from all this writing. Sport On,

HELP PICK COMPETE’S ATHLETE OF THE YEAR I love September. The first signs of fall start to creep in as football teams gear up for another season while the summer sports of swimming and softball start to wind down. And at Compete, we start to prep for our annual Sports Diversity Awards. It’s the time to ask you, our loyal readers, to send in your nominations for our 2013 Athlete of the Year. Better known in the office as AOTY, this is Compete’s oldest, most prestigious award as is evidenced by our past winners. Starting with hockey enthusiast Jeff Kagan back in 2008, he was followed by softball player John Deffee in 2009, swimmer Michael Holtz in 2010, cyclist David Rae in 2011 and last year’s winner, Jack Mackenroth, another swimmer. Each past winner is an outstanding athlete, to be sure. But they also are active leaders in the gay community – movers and shakers in their local LGBT communities as well as on the national, even the international front. Because these award winners come first from within their local LGBT communities, we ask you to nominate your choice for Compete’s 2013 AOTY winner. Nominations can be made by individuals, teams or leagues; you can even nominate yourself if you choose to do that. See page 45 for Compete instructions. We’ll announce the AOTY winner as well as winners of our other awards in our Third Annual Sports Diversity Awards, being held this year in Los Angeles on November 12. And new this year is our first local awards ceremony being held in Phoenix on November 1. November will be a busy month for Compete so stayed tuned for more information and be part of the excitement! Keep Smiling,

Connie Wardman, Editor-in-Chief connie.wardman@mediaoutloud.com

Wade Davis Creating Positive Change

W

HEN YOU THINK YOU are going to meet an NFL football player, you expect to meet a hulking man who towers above everyone, dominating the room by his sheer size. But Wade Davis Jr. doesn’t dominate with his size. He dominates with his mind, his action and his will to bravely venture into untested waters for a professional football player. The former cornerback played for the Tennessee Titans, Washington Redskins and Seattle Seahawks but his most impressive play happened when he left the field for good – Davis began to live his life as an openly gay man. Far from his days on the football field, Davis is now a writer and activist who was just named executive director of the You Can Play Project, the non-profit that takes a stand on the following: that locker rooms should be safe; that sports venues should be free from homophobia; and that

12

| COMPETE | September 2013

athletes should be judged on talent, heart and work ethic, not sexual orientation. Through my conversation with Davis, it is clear that this thoughtful, insightful and passionate man is determined to forge ahead on his own path and leave a wake of change behind him. This summer he launched the You Belong (YB) Camps for young LGBTQ athletes and their allies. The first camp, focusing on basketball, was held in Chicago with 40 kids in attendance. Over the course of the next year Davis is looking to host three more sessions with the next session scheduled for winter 2014 in New York or New Jersey. It’s been quite the journey for the kid from Shreveport, Louisiana who started playing football at age seven in the backyard with a game called “smear the queer.” It’s one of many ironies for a man who, after years of backpedaling through life, is now running forward at full force.

by Amy Jones, Jones Communication Who was your first great mentor? My first mentor who was a nonfamily member was my best friend Michael Jennings – he was one of the most talented, intelligent and thoughtful people I had ever met. I just marveled at his talent. But more impressive was his humbleness and work ethic. Watching him exist in the world free of ego and aspiring to be great at such a young age just inspired me. When did you know you could play college football? I knew I was a smart player who knew the game but I wasn’t sure I was good enough. I got the opportunity to show my skills at a small school called Mesa State University in Grand Junction, Colorado. They gave me a partial scholarship and I ran with the opportunity. After starting as a freshman, Weber State University offered me a full ride if I transferred. A coach

there helped me with the process and I made the most of the chance. Did you know you were gay in high school or college? The first time I had an understanding of my sexuality was during my 10th grade year in high school. I can remember feeling this sense of attraction toward a male classmate and not fully understanding it but thinking that it wasn’t ok. I was so determined to do things to make sure those feelings didn’t come back. So to be honest, I would watch pornography and try to focus all my attention on a female and tell myself that I was attracted and being aroused by her. Funny, right? As an athlete I worried about my teammates not accepting me and losing both their respect and my stature. Unfortunately, and embarrassingly, I became a bully in many ways in order to divert any attention on myself and any questions around my sexuality. Did playing in the NFL scare you because of your sexuality? No, playing football and being with my teammates as I got older became a safe haven in many respects. I could hide there and not think about being gay. When I was on the football field or training, I didn’t think about being gay. I loved playing the game of football with every part of my being. Football was home for me. Why did you decide to quit playing? I retired from the NFL when I had a third knee injury and couldn’t pass a physical and play up to my own expectations. What was the tipping point that made you decide to come out? The tipping point was my partner not wanting to go back in the closet

because I still hadn’t found the courage to own my identity in all spaces. He didn’t demand that I come out but he told me that the relationship he wanted for himself was one of openness and honesty.

opment and empowerment. One day at lunch we were talking about ways we could combine that passion with sports. And the camp idea was literally staring us in the face. We both sort of laughed and said, “Let’s do it.”

What was the reaction from your family?

What has been the response from the mainstream sports world?

My family’s reaction was mixed. My mother and father (who are both extremely religious) struggled. But my mother has come around, thankfully. My father and I still have a long way to go. Thankfully, my sister was from the beginning a beautiful and strong support system.

Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, loves this idea and understands the importance of it, especially when you explain how the initiative works. It will allow straight allies and LGBTQ youth to co-exist in sports and educate and show each other love without any reservations. It’s a beautiful thing.

And your former teammates? All of my former teammates have been amazing and all very supportive. Many have actually said they wished I had come out sooner so they could have supported me while I was playing. What gave you the idea to start the You Belong Initiative? My business partner Darnell Moore and I are both extremely passionate about youth leadership devel-

Why do you think there is so much fascination with an active NFL player coming out? Well, because football is perceived to be the epitome of masculinity, which in the minds of many is the complete opposite of what it means to be gay. It’s very stereotypical. To have an out active NFL player would help to redefine and reframe ideas of masculinity. And then many would have to re-imagine what it means to be gay.

| COMPETE | 13

What do you think about Kluwe and Ayanbadejo getting cut from their respective teams when they became vocal allies? Do you think it has anything to do with their stance on LGBT issues? I know both gentlemen and I think both understand the business of the NFL and the sports world. All athletes are replaceable and it’s a “what have you done for me lately league.” All teams are looking for the youngest and brightest players who cost the least. I think both were victims of age and salary cap issues, not victims of their LGBTQ advocacy work. Can a gay man play in the NFL successfully? Gay players are currently playing successfully in the league – we just don’t know about them. And there may be some that aren’t closeted to their teammates. Players don’t have to make a grand announcement about their sexuality to appease anyone. I think there is too much pressure for athletes and entertainers in general to disclose things about their personal lives, which is unfortunate. Disclosure is a choice, a very personal one. If a player is fine with having his teammates know without involving the outside world, we (everyone else) should accept that and allow players to have their privacy. But I think your question was more about can an athlete “come out” publicly and be successful, and that answer is yes. I think we don’t give athletes enough credit for being open-minded and intelligent enough to accept someone who is gay. I think the love and acceptance that Jason Collins has received illuminates that. The majority of athletes live by the code of “family” and any teammate, gay or straight, is considered family. Their teammates will love and respect them at the end of the day.

14

| COMPETE | September 2013

What do you think about Jason Collins? I was extremely proud and humbled by Jason. And I did speak to him the day of his announcement. What I loved more than anything else was that he understands the importance of what he did from a political standpoint. He wants to use this platform to change perceptions of masculinity. He was actually at our first YB camp in Chicago. He is a trailblazer and I’m proud to call him my friend. He handled his coming out with such dignity and class. Do you think being gay will be an issue in any sport 10 years from now? Unfortunately, yes. Racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia and the like will always be present within the sports world and our society at large. The majority of individuals will have moved past those issues but they will still exist in more covert ways. So there will always be a need to work on educating others on the issues of “difference” and “acceptance.” What do you hope the outcome of the You Belong Camps will be? I hope it transforms the minds of young LGBTQ athletes so they can feel as if they belong in sports and leave each and every camp with a deeper sense of pride and purpose. I also hope the professional athletes that participate will become more involved within the LGBTQ community to understand the importance of connecting and giving back within our community as well. Wade Davis – a cornerback on the field but a quarterback of changing minds and the world in the fight for equality and acceptance. Massaging the Facts

with Charles King, LMT of Rainbow Massage Anything you would like to add for our Compete readers?

Compete: How long have you been doing massage therapy?

their individual needs and issues. I tend to tailor each massage to my client and what they need. For athletes it depends if the massage is right before or after their sporting event. Sports therapy would be best to get their muscles loosened before a sporting event and to remove muscle tension after an event.

Charles King, LMT: I have been licensed for six years.

Any stretching tips for athletes before or after a workout or match?

Why did you pursue a career in massage therapy?

Stretching is very important. The biggest issue I find is that a lot of athletes don’t think about stretching their legs and arms before a workout like they would do before a sporting event. Most injuries happen during off-hours, while hiking, running and doing gym workouts.

Massage can also assist with sleeping conditions, lower back issues, shoulder and neck pain, hamstring and quadriceps tightness as well as ankle and wrist pain. Because muscles tend to automatically compensate for us, where you think you have pain may not be the true cause or issue. When you get a massage your LMT will locate the true root of the issue, and working as a team you both can create a schedule and regiment to take care of it.

Charles King. LMT

Originally it was suggested I go into massage when I was diagnosed with degenerative hip disease. My chiropractor said I had to do something on my feet so I went to school at Apollo College. Once I got to know about the benefits and healing abilities of massage, I decided to switch careers from accounting to massage full time and I have been very happy with my career change. What types of massage therapy do you do? I do both Swedish and therapeutic massage which include deep tissue, acupressure, trigger point, compression, sports and stretching. What kind of massage is the most beneficial to athletes and why? I would have to say that massage is beneficial for everyone and the type of massage would depend on

I train my clients in stretches that fit their individual needs. Again, stretching is very important but if you stretch the wrong way or over stretch, you can also do damage, especially if you have had prior injuries. What is the best way to contact you? The best and easiest way to contact me is text 480.518.2090. If I’m with a client I return the text as soon as I’m free; I also take phone calls to the same number. And you can email me at charles@rainbowmassagephx. com or find me on the web at: www.rainbowmassagephx.com.

Massage is great to get the body back into working condition after almost any injury or accident. As licensed massage therapists (LMT), we are trained to work with the muscles, getting them back into great working condition again.

When clients first come in, their issue has often been around for quite some time. While we can show some improvement on a client’s first visit, most clients will have to have a series of massages to rectify the issue completely. So don’t be surprised if you are asked to come back – it could take up to six or even ten visits to get a complete release from the issue. However, even after the primary issue has resolved it is always good to return for regular maintenance on your body.

“Pottie Wars” Coming To Your Area Soon? by Connie Wardman

J

UST AS SOME LGBT civil rights issues such as ending homophobia in sports, same-sex marriage and job protection are gaining positive traction these days, a new issue now becomes the rallying cry for those who want to “protect” the public from alleged LGBT “perversion.” There is now a push to legislate public bathroom usage so that transgender individuals can use only the bathroom that corresponds to the

gender listed on their original birth certificate. Now, more than ever, transphobia is raising its ugly head. This is a national issue with a local impact. And read “local” as “a pottie bill may be coming to your locale soon” because as soon as it passes in one area, it will be used as the legal precedent by other communities wanting to follow suit. This is an important issue for the entire LGBT community but especially for transgender athletes. Even if you aren’t transgender, please pay

attention. There are any number of transgender athletes who compete in their sports of choice not only within their local areas but who also travel to other geographic locales for tournaments and their associated events. The public restrooms they use may be in a locker room at a gym, at a ball field or arena, or at a hotel, bar, restaurant or other public place. While the issue is a national one, its everyday impact will affect happenings in your local area and mine.

spond to his or her birth sex is doing so only for perverted reasons. There is no understanding or acknowledgement on Kavanagh’s part that individuals who are being treated for hormone therapy and other treatments are expected to begin their transgender transition process by living as their preferred gender in public, generally for a year. Lumping all transgendered citizens into his personal “pervert” category, he apparently believes that the true danger zone is women’s bathrooms as opposed to men’s bathrooms because that is where he believes transgender males-tofemales will expose themselves to a child. Although given the recent action of conservative activist Dan Joseph of the right-wing Media Research Center who last month posted a video to YouTube, entitled “The Transgender Bathroom-Locker Room Question,” maybe Kavanagh’s response shouldn’t be so surprising. In the video he himself filmed with students at a Virginia university campus, Joseph asked if they would be ready to share bathrooms and changing rooms with transgender individuals. Clearly trying to elicit negative responses from them, he said, “You mean like a guy who just wants to see some naked chicks going ‘Oh, I’m transgendered and I need to go to the girls locker room?’” When a student responded with “exactly,” Joseph followed by saying, “I mean, that’s what I would do.” Although Joseph has tarred himself and other heterosexual males with the “pervert” brush rather than trangendered citizens as Kavanagh has done, this is simply another illustration of how far people are willing to go to defend their erroneous assumptions-turned-beliefs without ever trying to learn what the true issues are about. It prevents positive action to

find a meaningful and equitable resolution for all concerned. Kavanagh’s obvious prejudice against transgendered individuals is easily revealed when you realize that people who believe with all their hearts and souls that they’ve been born into the wrong body don’t revel in the “wrong” body parts that they were assigned at birth. Many with the financial means have sexual reassignment surgery so their physical bodies can finally match who they truly are emotionally. But by using this rallying cry of protecting children from perverts exposing themselves, Kavanagh and others like him, those who are already prejudiced by fear of what they don’t know and/or understand, push legislation based on emotion rather than justice. Molly Lenore, Compete’s 2012 Inspiring Athlete of the Year, is a male-to-female transgender individual. As an athlete, particularly a diehard football player who travels to out-of-town tournaments regularly, I asked her if she had experienced any difficulties with this. She replied that “I haven’t had to really deal with it myself, but I do remember that before I ‘officially’ transitioned, when I was using the men’s bathroom but looking pretty much like I do today, guys would walk in the bathroom, see me and run out, assuming they were in the wrong bathroom.” The good news for Phoenix is that this legislation won’t be in effect this year when the National Gay Flag Football League (NGFFL) returns to Phoenix in October for the thirteen annual Gay Bowl. But it’s not dead – it’s going to be voted on again next year. And if Phoenix and the rest of the state of Arizona decide to discriminate against transgender individuals, they should start mentally deducting the money from its tourism coffers that events like the Gay Bowl bring to the area.

Molly Lenore City and state leadership should have learned that lesson on prejudice from a two-decade struggle due to the state of Arizona’s refusal to acknowledge the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. Begun in 1986, the first year the holiday was celebrated across the U.S., it finally ended when the state’s voters approved it in 1992. It lost Phoenix untold millions of dollars in cancelled conventions and other large events, the tipping point being the NFL’s decision to relocate the 1993 Super Bowl from planned Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe to Pasadena, California. I asked Molly if she sees a way to resolve this emotional issue for the good of all involved. Without hysterical rhetoric fueling the question, the simple solution according to Molly is to have Kavanagh “put on a dress for a week and use the public restroom that corresponds to the gender listed on his birth certificate. I think he might have a slightly different outlook … assuming he could handle the verbal and possible physical abuse.” I couldn’t agree more! What about you?

Desert Dolls on a Roll

BY JOSEPH GAXIOLA

F YOU’VE NEVER BEEN TO A roller derby bout, you’re in for a hard-fought, hard-won evening of tough hits, spectacular sliding spills, fishnet-splitting action and all-round good fun. Started in 2009 as a flat track roller derby league, the Desert Dolls Roller Derby (DDRD) is one of the newest leagues in Arizona. Starting with five women who had skated for other teams, it was founded on the basis of empowering woman who have a desire to learn the sport of roller derby. Now starting its fourth season, DDRD boasts over 100 “SK8R GURLZ” divided into five teams: Pretty H8 Machines, Shotgun Shirleys, Cosmic Killas, Joon Cleavers and Cherry Posse. Sarah Elmquist, known to roller derby fans as Evol Starr from the Pretty H8 Machines team, is one of the league founders. She said that DDRD is excited to start its junior program for young women wanting “to learn how to play the fastest growing women’s sport, flat track roller derby. True to its founding principle of empowering women, DDRD is committed to being an all-inclusive and community-oriented league. Although over 85 percent of the league members had never skated prior to joining DDRD, the ongoing mentoring from the founders and senior players have helped new recruits blossom into seasoned skaters. They are all independent women working toward the same

goal – that of providing familyfriendly entertainment while playing a sport they love. Here are some basics for the uninitiated. With up to 20 skaters per team, each team consists of Jammers, Blockers, and a Pivot.

jammers ... can score the points; they’re designated by a star on their helmet.

Pivots ... control the speed of the pack; they’re designated by a stripe on their helmet.

Blockers ... make up the rest of the pack; their job is to play offense and defense to not only assist their jammer through the pack to score points but also to prevent the other team’s jammer from scoring points. The season generally lasts from August through May of each year and it starts and ends with a charity bout that benefits a local charity. While tickets are available at the door, season tickets offer special perks, such as early admittance so you don’t have to stand in line, a special edition lanyard and a $10 merchandise voucher. DDRD prides itself on being a community-oriented league by hosting charity bouts and participating in charity events. They have donated over $15,000 to local chari-

Why Marriage Matters A PRINCIPAL MARKER OF CIVIL EQUALITY BY WILLIAM KAPFER, PH.D., GUEST CONTRIBUTOR

I

’M FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO HAVE TWO mentors who’ve helped me become the person I am today. These two men also happen to be a couple, together for over fifty years. When they met, they were both working in the same office in Manhattan, and in order to keep people off the scent, they traveled to work separately every morning. Of course, no one could be openly gay back in the 1950s—not only was it dangerous, it was actually illegal to be partaking in what was then deemed “lewd and dissolute behavior.” A lot had changed by the time I met these men in the 1990s. When I was introduced to them they were living together openly, splitting their time between New York and the Hamptons. While they didn’t “advertise” their relationship, it was widely known they were a couple. They shared an apartment in the city, a house in the country and went everywhere as a pair. They ran a successful business, were involved in professional groups, sponsored charities and held witty gatherings over fabulous dinners. And despite all this, the possibility that they could actually marry never even crossed their minds. A lot has changed over the years and I now find myself in the position of mentoring others just as I was once mentored. Now in a few forward-thinking states we can enjoy

federal benefits as married same sex couples, including an impressive list of legal and economic privileges available to us, such as the vital ability to transfer assets without tax liability and to inherit our spouses’ Social Security payments. The 1993 “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (DADT) law that flew in the face of our fundamental right to equality was finally repealed in 2011. And now the armed services are extending benefits to married same sex couples as well, including time off for travel to states where they can legally marry. At last, we’re entering that New Frontier in which the onceunthinkable possibility of true equality is becoming a reality. So now my beloved mentors, after all these years, are on the verge of tying the knot. They no longer need to worry that when one of them passes on, the other will be saddled with devastating taxes and a nightmare of red tape. They needn’t dread the possibility that disapproving relatives can legally deprive a surviving partner of all that’s left of a relationship built over decades – longer than most marriages, straight or gay. They no longer need to fear that a hospital will prevent them from visiting one another because they are not related by blood or marriage – or fail to recognize their basic rights to make critical health-care decisions for the other because the two are not “relatives.” Finally, no bigot can argue that my mentors’ relationship doesn’t exist, that it isn’t real, or that they haven’t earned the right to call each other “husband.” And no one can ever again relegate their love to second-class status.

HITTING THE TARGET WITH GLAD BY JOSEPH GAXIOLA GLAD, THE PHOENIX AREA GAY AND LESBIAN Association of Darts, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. The non-profit organization of diverse men and women was established in 1988 with the dual purpose of bringing unity to the gay and lesbian community and raising money for local charities. Today’s league (Summer/Fall 2013) has 29 teams with 13 Phoenix-area bars sponsoring the teams. Playing darts offers GLAD members the spirit of fellowship, sportsmanship, and fun. But GLAD is the only Phoenix area gay and lesbian dart league that gives back to the community. Members nominate and elect the local charities they want to support with the intention that their contributions will enrich the lives of the recipients as they enrich the lives of GLAD members. If you’re interested in participating, here is what you need to know. GLAD has two regular seasons – Winter/Spring and Summer/Fall. A team roster consists of five full-time players and two alternates. Dues are $5 per week with 51 percent of all money raised going to local charities selected by GLAD members. To date, the dart league has raised and donated more than $700,000 to local Phoenix charities. Tuesday evening play consists of five individual games of 301, two games of team 501 and two games of team Cricket. Individual awards are given to players who have thrown a “hat trick” (three bull-eyes), a “3 in a bed” (three darts in a single triple), a “white horse” (one dart in three separate cricket number triples during cricket games only) or a “6 dart out” (out in six darts or less during 301). And if you don’t understand the terminology, GLAD members invite you to join them – they’re happy to help you learn the game. In 2007 some league members launched the Have a Heart Project that raises money for GLAD’s memberchosen charities each season. A series of fund raisers and events are held each season for the three GLAD memberelected 501(c)3 charities with 100 percent of the monies raised specifically benefitting them. Member participation in the Have a Heart Project is on a volunteer basis. According to GLAD members who have chosen to participate, the project has made the league more exciting because it enables them to get involved, to get to know each other better while working on a common goal. Since June of 2008 the Have a Heart Project alone has raised over $40,000 for the tour league members’ selected charities.

While it has brought a sense of purpose to those who feel that they would like to do more, the Have a Heart Project has also built the league membership through GLAD visibility at the fundraising events. Increased community involvement has enabled GLAD to better inform the public of its identity, mission and purpose. And that exposure has also brought about collaboration with other organizations and groups that help unite the Phoenix LGBT community. GLAD is always looking for new players, returning players, new sponsor bars and returning sponsor bars as well as ideas to help raise money for local non-profits in the Phoenix metropolitan area. If you are interested in joining, please visit their Facebook page and leave them a message: facebook.com/pages/Gay-And-LesbianAssociation-of-Darts-GLAD/151296014898335

HOT ITEMS YOU SHOUDLN’T DO WITHOUT

THE AQUAJOGGER is a fantastic in-water exercise system that comfortably suspends you at shoulder level in deep water, allowing you to breathe normally and move freely while performing a wide variety of water exercises. The Aquajogger components allow the person working out to determine the level of resistance they want for their leg and arm motions. These range from very low that approximates a walk to very strenuous that is similar to a full-body fitness machine workout (only without the joint discomfort and machinery). Aquajogger makes low-impact, in-water exercise much more enjoyable, effective and beneficial. The Aquajogger system retails for between $44.95 and $99.95 depending on size and accessories. It comes in both women’s and men’s sizes.

SLIM CHILLERS’ SKINNY FREEZERS AND BLENDERFULLS

The Mini Moso comes in a pack of two – that’s one for each shoe – for just MSRP $9.95. For more information on this and other Moso products or for convenient purchase, please visit us at

SLIM CHILLERS was formed on the premise that it is not only possible, but also highly probable, to have an adult frozen Cocktail without all the unforgiving calories and still make it taste great! Slim Chillers Skinny Freezers use only eight-times distilled, triple filtered vodka along with select, carefully balanced flavors and ingredients to create the best tasting frozen vodka martini in four outstanding flavors – cosmopolitan, watermelon lemonade, appletini and lemon drop. The Blenderfulls zero-calorie pouched margarita mix will make an entire “Blender full”, 46 to 58 ounces, of a delicious mouth watering flavored margarita from just one pouch, some Tequila, and a few cups of ice, no added measuring needed. These come in original flavor as well as mango, strawberry lemonade and pomegranate. Slim Chillers spent the greater part of a year striving to create the perfect frozen cocktail that would appeal to a discerning palate by delivering lower calories, great mouth feel, and fantastic flavor.

COMPETE’S TOP 10 TRAVEL APPS

Whether you’re planning a two-week summer vacation or just a quick weekend getaway, here are 10 wonderful travel apps to make your journey more enjoyable. HUFF POST TRAVEL’s Doug Cantor identified the apps that he believes help you at every phase of your trip, making it smoother, safer and more fun for everyone involved. DCOVERY Not a spelling mistake folks, Dcovery is great for organizing your pre-trip research. Their Place Finder browser extension extracts the points of interest and other relevant online pages you’ve searched and enables you to categorize them. It then adds pictures and directions with maps included. Sync your phone with your computer and this app takes your information and creates a handy travel guide tailored to your personal interests. GATEGURU Upload your airport arrival and departure locations and GateGuru lists not just your food options but also shops and services like ATMs, where to find them and their ratings from other travelers. This app will also give estimated wait times for security lines and last-minute deals on rental cars. For iOS, Android and Windows; free. ICE: IN CASE OF EMERGENCY For that “just in case” backup, ICE keeps your doctors’ phone numbers, details on specific medical conditions and insurance information all in one place where you can access it even when the phone is locked. This app can also translate the stored information into ten different languages. For Android; $3.99.

POSTAGRAM This creates the obligatory vacation postcards but with a high-tech twist. You take your own photo with your smartphone camera or choose one from your Instagram or Facebook account and then type in your text and the address of the recipient. Your personalized postcard will show up in their actual mailbox within a few days. For iOS and Android; app is free, postcards are 99 cents each for U.S. delivery, $1.99 for international delivery. PRESSREADER If you’re on the road a lot, this app allows you to keep up with what’s happening at home. PressReader delivers 2,000 newspapers from around the world to your mobile device’s screen (more than 1,200 are in English), making it easy to also get news on your destinations. It shows each paper’s actual daily layout and lets you zoom in on a page or click headlines to view a text version; it also has a text-tospeech option if you tire of reading. For iOS, Android, Windows Phone and Blackberry; $29.95 a month subscription, 99 cents a download. SCOUT In addition to providing traffic updates and voice-guided, turn-by-turn navigation to help you arrive at your destination, Scout also helps find things to do once you get there. You can choose local sights and attractions from a large catalog on its website and then sync your selections with the app for your arrival. It also keeps updated listings of recommended concerts, sporting events and other timely entertainment options. For iOS and Android; free.

ISTONE TRAVEL TRANSLATION Translation is this app’s only function and it performs it extremely well. It has over 300 useful phrases, like “How much does it cost?” or “I’d love a room on a higher floor,” that it can say aloud in 12 different languages. You flip through categories, like dining or directions, to quickly find the expression you need. And if you encounter a new foreign phrase, you can record it for later use. For iOS; free for basic version, full versions of languages require an app purchase.

SEAT ALERTS From Expertflyer.com, the Seat Alerts app allows you to input the type of airline seat you prefer or even choose specific seats. You can look at a seating chart for your flight and read ratings and reviews before making a selection. It then monitors the flight’s seating availability and alerts you when the one you want comes open – right up to departure time. For iOS and Android; free for a single alert, 99 cents for additional alerts, from $4.99 for an Expertflyer.com account with up to 30 alerts.

LOCALEATS Looking for restaurants frequented by local in-the-know foodies? This app will narrow your search in dozens of cities in the U.S. and abroad based on media reviews and diners’ recommendations. You can browse by categories, such as cuisine type and price range, and LocalEats will find what is best near your current location, give you directions and even let you book a taxi to get there. For iOS; 99 cents.

TRAVEL APP BOX Touted as the Swiss Army knife of travel apps, it’s a flight tracker, currency converter, tip calculator and lots of other helpful tools all in one package. It also features offline maps, including public transportation layouts in 40 cities worldwide, when you’re stuck somewhere without cellular or WiFi service. For iOS; $1.99.
